t is safe to assume that over the past 65 years hundreds of people, most of them children, first experienced the joy of skiing at Rotarun, Hailey’s local nonprofit ski area. Many of those people would also likely never have been able to learn to ski without Rotarun, and a lot of them are still skiing today because of their early experiences at the ski hill. Through its LASAR (Learn to Ski and Alpine Race) program, Rotarun is still providing the only opportunity for an introduction to skiing for many south Wood River Valley kids. The LASAR program costs $50 and will begin on Jan. 7 this year. Registration is limited to 50 and will be held at Rotarun Dec. 18 from 6 to 7 p.m. Free popcorn and cocoa will be served. “The program was started by Pat and Adele Savaria at least 10 years ago and then was passed on to Heather Flood,” said Jesse Foster, president of the Rotarun

ocal fans of the best-selling children’s novel “Peter and The Starcatcher”—written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson—are in for a treat this December as the magical tale will come to life on the stage. The prologue to J.M. Barrie’s “Peter and Wendy” is given a theatrical and inventive portrayal of how a miserable orphan boy came to be the symbol for childhood imagination and wonder. Company of Fools will present the Tony Award-winning play version, adapted to the stage by playwright Rick Elice, from Dec. 18-Jan. 3. Tickets are $35 full price, $25 for seniors and Sun

Valley Center for the Arts members and $15 for students (18 and under). The first showing, Dec. 18, will be the company’s “Pay What You Feel” preview night. Tickets will go on sale at The Liberty Theatre box office one hour prior to the performance and audiences can literally pay whatever they want. There are no reserved seats or reserved tickets for this particular performance. Up until recently, the rights to this Broadway hit were heavily guarded, and even now Company of Fools is one of only 13 theatres to receive permission to perform it. “We have wanted to perform ‘Peter and The Starcatcher’ for some time now because it is based on a book that we and the community love,” exCONTINUED ON PAGE 7

Snow From Hoses A Heaven Send

P.M. FADDEN

‘Snow from heaven, not from hoses’ reads the comic slogan of an illustration taped to the wall of the Dollar Mountain snowmaking workshop. With the arrival of winter, snow enthusiasts—and the snowmakers themselves—are hoping that those words prove true. But, what if the snow doesn’t fall? The livelihood of an entire community can hinge upon the snow conditions of the local ski area. Snow sports today represent big business. Ski bums will gladly tell you that it’s passion, not business, that stokes their fires. Yet, that passion would be tersely tested if the home hill in question were closed for lack of snow. The ski industry itself recognizes the absolute need for consistent availability of its product. There is a demand from those who love to ski and ride. The response to that demand is twofold: a technology that supplies the snow and a specialized crew that—in the words of Sun Valley Co. snowmaker Corey Allen—is “willing to take ownership of the mountain’s ski conditions.” Now, let’s take a quick step back in time. The year was 1950. Three ingenious lads named Art Hunt, Wayne Pierce and Dave Richey pooled their collective love of winter to take the world’s first steps toward manmade snow. By 1952, their fledgling attempts at manufacturing snow had caught the attention of ski areas, and the ‘snow guarantee’ was born. The 1970s saw great growth in snowmaking technologies. World-class ski resorts were ‘turning on’ to the benefits of aiding Mother Nature in providing snow to the masses. Sun Valley introduced snowmaking technology to Bald Mountain’s slopes in 1974, and Dollar Mountain would follow suit in 1982. The so-called “snow gun” became a common sight in ski fields everywhere. Today, like yesteryear, the snow gun premise is that of forced water melded with

pressurized air to produce the end product: snow. Yet, that seemingly basic equation is—in fact—a complex dance of numerous moving parts, and the equipment is constantly evolving. Resort snowmaker Andy Neuner points out that “a snowmaker’s job can still be at the mercy of Mother Nature.” Yet, modern snowmaking systems are able to recognize opportune ‘wet bulb’ readings (which measure a combination of both temperature and humidity) to automatically initiate production when conditions are favorable. “The industry advancement most beneficial to Sun Valley at this time has been the 1989 implementation of automation to snowmaking,” said Resort snowmaker Dennis Harper. Naturally, such winter wizardry is quite expensive. However, additional advancement in snowmaking technology has included new “low-energy” guns. Harper says that 47 of these energy-thrifty machines will be in use on Bald Mountain this year. As wondrous as technology has been for the production of snow, capable hands are still required for the oversight of a snowmaking system. A snowmaker must possess a skill set that spans snowmobile operation, mechanical/electrical proficiency, computer usage, the ability to problem solve in any given situation, and all of these while adhering to strict mountain safety. Snowmakers work through the cold, dark nights while most others sleep, and the task before them is laboriously large. Baldy alone has over 500 snow guns serviced by a crew of 15. Dollar Mountain is home to nearly 100 guns maintained by a 12-person crew. “Not all of these guns may be used at one time; on Baldy, 80 guns may be run at once, and 15 at a time on Dollar,” Harper said. To successfully run those guns means constant vigilance of a lengthy checklist. “Pumps, compressors, machine rooms, computers, pipelines, communications CONTINUED ON PAGE 10 T H E W E E K LY S U N •

Sarah Busdon, a local Hailey resident and parent of a fifth-grader at Hailey Elementary, also said she has witnessed motorists speeding and behaving badly. “I have noticed flagrant indifference for the crosswalk and the pedestrians in the crosswalks,” she said. “On one particular occasion, one of my children had an older woman yell at her and used an inappropriate hand gesture while she was in the crosswalk. specifically directed at the school’s crossing guards and, reportedly, have caused at least one crossing guard to quit his or her post, due to harassment, because he or she was “just doing their job.” Bailey believes “a traffic light would be a sure fix.” The Hailey Police Department has stepped in and now works closely with Hailey Elementary School to lend support and get drivers to slow down. Hailey police have stepped in on many occasions, but the officers are unable to be there on a regular basis due to the lack of manpower. Along with the occasional designated patrol at the beginning and end of each school day, the Department has also deployed its speed radar trailer. It also reports public service announcements on its Facebook page and Nixle, the Department’s community notification system, which also cautions motorists to slow down in designated areas. Hailey Assistant Chief of Police Dave Stellers commented on the importance of the role the crossing guards play. “The service they provide to the community is noteworthy,” he said. “And it can be a dangerous position. Trying to get traffic to stop, to get these kids across the street, is not easy. They routinely face vehicles that don’t stop, and sometimes motorists even yell at them for doing their job. The community should be thanking the crossing guards for the

everyday pedestrians have recently claimed that they have experienced blatant disregard by motorists who drive through those intersections too fast. The growing issue of speeding, failing to stop and claims of inappropriate exchanges and hand gestures made by motorists has raised a red flag for parents and potentially for everyone in Blaine County. Tom Bailey, the principal at Hailey Elementary School, believes the situation needs to be addressed and remedied. “For over twenty years, school staff has manned the crosswalk at Main Street each day before school from 7:30 a.m. to 8 a.m. and after school from 2:30 p.m. to 3 p.m.,” he said in an interview. “Every year we have had close calls between drivers and pedestrians, but this year we have seen a drastic increase of close calls and very angry outbursts.” Principal Bailey described how, in his opinion, motorists have been behaving badly , adding that “Motorists have raced through the crosswalk, even while adults, crossing guards and students are in the middle of the street. They roll down their window and curse staff and kids to get out of their way. Some have skidded to stops, just narrowly missing staff and students.”

hen it comes to musical education, Blaine County School District isn’t messing around. For the second year in a row, the National Association of Music Merchants Foundation recognized Blaine County School District for its outstanding commitment to music education. The School District took home the prestigious “Best Communities for Music Education” designation, making it the only school district in Idaho to receive that award. Music fans can see the talent behind the School District’s nationally recognized performing arts programs this holiday season as the elementary, middle school and high school classes of the Wood River Valley present their winter concert series. The concerts began last week and will continue through Friday, Dec. 19, in various locations throughout the county. “It’s an annual tradition

for the schools, and a great time for students to have something to work toward (besides Christmas break),” said School District spokesperson Heather Crocker in an interview. Wood River Middle School and Wood River High School will present a winter orchestra concert on Monday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. Carey will have a piano recital on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 6 p.m. At the elementary school level, there will be a winter concert at the Bellevue Elementary gymnasium today at 6:30 p.m., tomorrow at 6:30 p.m. and Friday at 1:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. Hemingway Elementary School will also host a choir, bell choir and strings concert with the kindergarten, second and fourth grades, on Friday at 1 p.m. in the Ernest Hemingway Elementary gymnasium. “This is a great feel-good opportunity for everyone,” Crocker said. “It’s a very welcoming environment, especially for those who might not have children in school anymore; they get to feel that energy of young people again. It’s a wonderful way

to participate in something that’s not just part of the school district, but part of the holidays.” At the elementary school level, the concerts are more focused on showcasing the singing and instrumental talents of the students, while at the middle school and high school level, the concerts become a little more complex and work on exemplifying the schools’ orchestra, choir and band abilities. “There’s a lot of teamwork involved in musical instruction,” says Crocker, and working their way up through the performing arts programs becomes a “good goal for the students to have.” Rather than watching a Christmas special on television, or listening to holiday tunes blaring through the radio, why not head to one of the local schools for a fabulous start to the season? For a full list of all the School District concerts taking place this month and where the performances will take place, visit the School District’s website at www. blaineschools.org. tws

aylor Lenane, a senior at Wood River High School carrying a 3.8 grade point average and a member of National Honor Society, prefers to view the world through a lens. That’s because she loves to work in the medium of film and photography, both in and out of school. When asked what her passion in life is—beside film—Lenane gave the very sage advice: “to live stress-free and that the only moment that exists is right now.” “I started messing around with cameras in sixth grade when YouTube started really going,” she says. “My passion then was acting and I was inspired to make a video of my own, so I went for it. It was the first time I held a camera and filmed something and I really enjoyed it. I got to be a star, but what I really loved was the whole creative process of coming up with an idea and executing it.” During Lenane’s sophomore year, she wrote and directed a short horror movie. “It had a few characters and ran for about five minutes and we made it around Halloween,” she says. “It turned out really good and scary and we got great feedback after sharing it on the school’s news broadcast.” Lenane also took part in the school’s multimedia and video production class. “We learned the basics of filmmaking and learned editing software and the whole process of making a video,” she says. “I also wanted to be a part of the school’s

news show, so I started making video segments for that. We broadcast a couple of days a week and look at issues around the school and record and promote events.” Last summer, Lenane went to Los Angeles for a two-week seminar on the business of film and came away with mixed emotions. “It kind of turned me off as to how big and fake the business in Hollywood is,” she says. “To me, the art of film is showing truth so the result is that I’m much more interested in independent filmmaking.” For her senior project, Lenane made a two-minute promotional film for Alpine Aquatics. “It was a scenic reel of their outdoor garden creations in people’s backyards,” she says. “I was able to use different techniques and make the gardens look as good as possible. I was really pleased and impressed by how good it came out. Right now I enjoy marketing, advertising and promotion and doing videos for companies. You really need a different mindset for a narrative project and a whole creative team.” Lenane’s plan for next year is to hold off on college for a year and instead travel to New Zealand and work on a self-sustaining organic farm there. “My friends did it for a year and had an amazing time,” she says. “You stay with a host family and work 30 hours a week in return for room and board. I want to enjoy myself before I go back to school and this gives me a chance to live with the earth and not produce waste.” tws

systems, valves, shelters, hoses, weather stations and the guns themselves are all vital tech and in need of constant care,” explained Harper. Harper also adds that to list challenges or obstacles encountered while making snow “could go on forever,” but a snowmakers’ worthy struggles are rewarded when they see the mountain covered in white. Allen agreed. “A snowmaker is all about

earning his turns,” he said. Future aspirations for Sun Valley snowmaking include the acquisition of new components to re-enforce the Resort’s powder-producing efforts and the furthering of automation capabilities into manual areas. Staying energy conscious is also a top priority; Sun Valley looks to expand the number of low-energy guns and hydrants in use throughout its fleet. New computer software allows

for innovation of not only how snow is made, but even managerial tactics. Yes, snowmaking is a field that consistently moves forward. Yet, whatever industry developments may arise, core standards remain consistent. When it comes to snowmaking, Harper, Allen and Neuner agree, “It’s about practicing jobsite safety, maintaining top quality and, of course, keeping a watchful eye on the horizon.”

ROTARUN, CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1

Hanging out inside with other members of Rotarun’s LASAR program can be just as fun as hitting the hill. Courtesy photo

Rotarun hosts a “Snow Box Derby” every year, in addition to all sorts of other great events for kids. This year’s Derby will take place on March 8.

Board of Directors, in an interview. “I took over the program three years ago. The goal has always been to provide South Valley skiers an affordable way to get hooked on skiing, [teach them] the skills to be safe and confident on all terrain and then continue their progression by moving to Baldy.” Over the last three years, Rotarun has focused on working particularly with younger children. “Kids aged 5 through 11 can participate on Wednesdays and Fridays after school from Jan. 7 through the end of March,” Foster said, adding that, unlike “just a free” ski program, LASAR works with kids in small groups, which allows them to focus on new activities each day they are on the mountain. “The program’s philosophy is to teach kids how to turn through the use of designated courses that encourage them to find their edges, gain balance, learn to shift their body weight and turn at specific times,” he said. “The most exciting part of the program for me is to watch the progression from kids only riding the platter lift to the first tower and then

getting off on the easy terrain, and by the end of the season they are coming off the top of the mountain with such confidence that I know that they will be lifelong skiers.” Logistically, Rotarun, is a breeze for parents; the parking lot and lift are close to the lodge. “The kids are easily and safely able to move around the mountain without being lost,” Foster said. “We do fun races for the program at the end of the session, and then they are encouraged to participate in the annual Arkoosh Cup on Sunday, Feb. 15. Families are encouraged to spend time skiing with their kids under the lights after the day’s instruction has ended and night skiing begins.” Regardless of mountain and snow conditions, there will be a grand opening on Dec. 20 from 9-11 a.m., including a free pancake breakfast. A New Year’s Eve celebration will be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Dec. 31 with night skiing and a spaghetti feed. Fireworks will begin at 9 p.m. Rotarun season passes cost $200 for a family, $100 for adults and $50 for children.

M

ore warm days, some cloudy weather and a little bit of snowmelt will all contribute to good fishing this week. Thus far it has been a very mild winter for our local fish populations. This is probably not a bad thing after a stressful summer for them. With the ash from the fires of two years ago in the Big Wood, the drought that hit Silver Creek hard and the flooding and landslides that covered the South Fork of the Boise, perhaps it’s not a bad thing that our fish get a little bit of a reprieve and some time to catch up on fat stores for the rest of winter. Nymphing and streamer fishing are still the name of the game. Think about primarily fishing nymphs and tandem rigs of nymphs when the sun is out. When the cloud cover gets heavy, especially on Silver Creek, get your streamers out and plan on catching the Creek’s biggest fish! The rivers get busier during the holidays, so if you like your winter solitude, try to get out there this week and this weekend. It is also the time of year when fly-fishing guide rates drop quite a bit. Down here in Picabo we run half day trips for $300 for one or two guests, all inclusive. We also offer a great opportunity to fish some great private water. While the warm weather persists, it does open up a great opportunity for chukar hunting the nearby ridgelines. There are plenty of birds out there this year, and the low hills are also full of Hungarian partridge. If you’ve never hunted upland game, this would be a perfect week to get out there and give it a try. You may need to find a friend with a hunting dog but, hey, it’s Sun Valley— we all own hunting dogs! The ducks and geese are a little scarcer and spread out lately. Once we get some colder days again, the waterfowl hunting should pick back up. In the meantime, small-water techniques are probably the best. Use very few decoys, call softly and be VERY well concealed in whatever blind you are using. It is tricky hunting right now because of very comfortable temperatures. For the best action, head down to the Snake until we freeze back up and the hunting returns to Silver Creek. Happy hunting and fishing, everyone!

Saturated Fat Intake Linked To Abdominal Fat Accumulation BY MARTHA RAIDL

T

here are two ways fat is distributed and stored in the body. The first is called subcutaneous fat, which is distributed evenly over the body surface and is stored directly under the skin. The second is called ectopic fat and it accumulates in the abdominal area (belly), liver, muscle tissue, including the heart, and the pancreas. Now it appears that the type of fat you consume in your diet affects where the fat will be stored, as either subcutaneous or ectopic fat. Swedish researchers at Uppsala University randomly divided 39 young adult male and female subjects, of normal weight, into two groups, and had them consume 750 extra calories daily for seven weeks. For the first group, the extra calories came from polyunsaturated fat (sunflower oil), while the second group consumed the extra calories from saturated fat (palm oil); both groups consumed the same amount of protein, carbohydrate and fat. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) were used to measure subjects’ body fat distribution at the beginning and the end of the

study. The results showed that subjects who ate excess saturated fat gained significantly more: (1) total body fat and (2) fat in the liver and abdomen (especially surrounding the organs). Conversely, those who ate excess polyunsaturated fat gained significantly less total body fat, and gained three times as much muscle mass. This effect may be potentially very helpful for elderly individuals who have difficulty maintaining muscle mass as they age. Researchers theorized that the excess polyunsaturated fats were turning on genes involved in muscle metabolism. One of the researchers, Ulf Riserus commented, “This is of great interest, as we lack preventative treatments for fatty liver and visceral fat (abdominal fat) today.” He suggest individuals replace saturated fat from meat, butter and palm oil with unsaturated fats from plant oils and fatty fish. Holiday Lights Costs Less Than Before BY IDAHO POWER

S

ome folks may see higher electricity use during the holiday season, but all those twinkly lights may not be the reason. That’s because the LED lights in most newer displays use far less energy than their predecessors. Consider these numbers, based on a 100-bulb string of lights, operating eight hours per day for 30 days. For C7 incandescents (the big, older-type bulbs), the rough cost for a residential customer in Idaho Power’s service area is $13.73 per month. For C7 LED bulbs, the cost is $1.97 per month, so folks are saving almost $12 per string by replacing C7 incandescents with equivalent LEDs. For the mini bulbs, the incandescents run about $0.85 per month, and the mini LEDs are about $0.15 per month. There are other sizes of bulbs, of course, so actual savings vary. But It’s easy to see why lighting your home for the holidays costs a lot less than it used to. We encourage folks to use myAccount on our website (www.idahopower.com) to easily track their previous usage and their month-to-date and projected monthly usage. It helps to avoid surprises, and they can better manage their electricity use. BRIEF

Jolly Cowboys BY TONY TAYLOR

On December 9, 1996, a Douglas DC-3, operated by Emery Worldwide, crashed at Gowen Field in Boise. The crew reported an engine fire shortly after the Salt Lake City, Utah,-bound flight took off. Sadly, the two people onboard did not survive. The aircraft and its crew are known to many members of the local aviation community. I wrote this poem in 1996 in memorium. I’m presenting it to our community this week to commemorate the 18th anniversary of the accident. Jolly Cowboys By Tony Taylor

She was the sweetest sister, the fairest of the fair, Born a C-FOUR-SEVEN and bred for stormy air. She’d flown the war in England and then out of Valdez, she set her course “dead reckon” over endless Arctic seas.

A Douglas C-47, the military variant of the DC-3. Public domain photo via Wikimedia Commons

It was sad and wet and windy, like Boise gets to be: The tower cleared the runway for DAKOTA-CHARLIE-THREE. McIlvain was pilot, Archie sat right seat; ten thousand hours between them, And stories they’d repeat— of Northern Lights and rivers or runs with Arab goats, of strips in deepest Africa and guns beneath their coats. It was sad and wet and windy before we heard the nell, a sorry scene at Gowen when Rescue rang the bell. She lost a starboard engine before she found her speed and though those “buckos” spurred her and marked her changing leads, history was against them and all the facts provide, with only eight more seconds they’d have made that stormy ride. No more birds like Goonies will make that midnight flight and no more jolly cowboys flying through the night.

The Lotus Flower BY DICK DORWORTH

On the east wall of the Spirit Room, upstairs in the YMCA in Ketchum, is a large—about 8 feet by 12 feet—lovely painting of a lotus flower. I spend a few hours each week under that painting in one of Richard Odom’s yoga classes. The lotus, Richard and the practice itself are inspiring and nutritious; they are daily reminders that the exquisite, organic growth of anything—a lotus flower, for example—is literally rooted in the mud from which it grows. That is, beauty is the culmination of a natural process that is not always pretty. Everything in life—the perfection of a flower or the catastrophe of war—is part of a process, and the lotus is an ancient symbol in several religions and cultures of the process leading to beauty, fertility, prosperity, spirituality and eternity. I like this Hindu description of one aspect of the lotus: “As a lotus is able to emerge from muddy waters un-spoilt and pure, it is considered to represent a wise and spiritually enlightened quality in a person; it is representative of somebody who

T H E W E E K LY S U N •

carries out their tasks with little concern for any reward and with a full liberation from attachment.” The lotus represents the purity and beauty of life that rises out of muddy waters. Think of that. Six months ago, the east wall of the Spirit Room was dark-blue blank and—when lights were low during yoga classes, uninspiring. The south end of the Spirit Room has windows that overlook the YMCA swimming pool and sometimes the reflections from the pool create a rippling of light on the east wall. One of Richard’s students, local artist Deborra Bohrer, was observing the undulations of light on the wall during class and had the inspired thought that the lotus grows from water and one needed to be painted upon the wall. Deborra approached YMCA CEO Jason Fry with the idea and spent the next several weeks working on the painting. “We needed to add some personality to the Spirit Studio,” Fry said of the result. “The lotus is known to help connect us to nature and our true selves. Deb’s beautiful work has added a wonderful new energy to the studio and the practice for

DECEMBER 10, 2014

our instructors and members.” And so it has. The lotus flower inspired Confucius to say, “I have a love for the lotus. While growing in the mud it still remains unstained.” In Buddhism the lotus is similar to the path of a person’s life—from seed, to emerging from dirty water, to fully blossoming into a fully awakened person. The ancient Egyptians associated the lotus with the sun, which disappeared each night and re-appeared each morning—representative of the cycles of life itself. Every person has days that seem closer to the bottom of the pond than to the fully blossomed lotus flower floating upon it, and, of course, vice-versa. For me, every day in the Spirit Room practicing with Deborra’s lotus flower and Richard is an encouragement and inspiration to persevere, keep growing, let go, learn liberation. Thanks Richard. Thanks Deborra. Dick Dorworth is a Blaine County resident, author and former world record holder for speed on skis. Visit his website and blog at dickdorworth.com. tws

Best Practices Paying Bills & Staying Organized MELISSA MCKENZIE

P

aying bills is what keeps the lights on at your small business, in more ways than one. But it can often feel like a big chore – one you’d like to put off as long as possible. Rather than dreading bill payment time, establish a system that makes it easier. After all, bill payment affects your cash flow and your ability to cover expenses like payroll and taxes. It influences your relationship with suppliers and can be an important negotiating point. What’s more, your bill payment history directly impacts your business’s credit rating which, in turn, determines your ability to obtain financing as your business grows. An efficient process for paying bills is vital to the success of any small business. Following these steps will help you stay organized. Use bill pay through your bank Using your bank’s bill pay system is an easy, paperless way to pay bills that gives you control and flexibility. •Schedule automatic payments on the same day of each month (rent, for example). •Schedule automatic payments of the same amount each month (utilities, for example). •Schedule any payment with a variable date and/or amount. (Keep in mind your bank should make payments within one or two business days of when you schedule them, so allow adequate time.) •Opt to receive e-bills, and have your bank send an e-mail reminder when your statement is ready.

possible. •If you must use a paper check, use accounting software. Ensure accuracy and accountability •Always keep personal and business expenses separate so that you can easily pull the right information you need at tax time or if you are audited. •Document and file all paid bills. •Avoid late fees. Never let bills become overdue. If you are disputing a payment, send in a partial payment. •Include the account number – not the card number – when you pay any invoice so you are accurately credited for your payment. •Keep detailed records. Ask your accountant which records you need to keep for tax or other purposes and how long you need to keep them. •Store information securely. File paper documents under lock and key and limit access. Have a regular backup schedule for your computers, servers, and external storage devices. Be consistent, accurate, and timely when paying bills. The best practice for any size business is to pay invoices on time (or early, if possible). Not only will this save you from costly finance charges and penalties, it’s vital to maintaining a good business credit record.

Paying suppliers •Try to consolidate the number of suppliers you use. By giving more business to one supplier, you can increase your leverage for negotiating credit and payment terms. •Get favorable payment terms; 30 days is the norm, but you may be able to negotiate a longer term based on a good payment history. •Ask about the possibility of an early-payment discount; for example, a 5 percent discount if you pay within 5-10 days of receiving an invoice. Eliminate paperwork •Ask suppliers to submit invoices online. •Sign up for online invoices from utilities, phone, etc. •Avoid writing paper checks as much as

The Travesty of Reflexology

BY MARK COOK

W

hen you hire an electrician, you expect them to know their stuff. Same with a plummer. You must have a license to paint fingernails. And yet anyone can say they do ref lexology and that is a travesty. Why? First let’s define “travesty” and perhaps that will supply the answer: 1. A debased or grotesque likeness; 2. An exaggerated or grotesque imitation. Note the words used: “grotesque,” likeness and imitation. Let’s define “grotesque”: 1. Characterized by ludicrous, repulsive, or incongruous distortion, as of appearance or manner. If a plummer walked into the room with an electrician’s belt on,

wouldn’t that be incongruous with what you would expect when you are paying good money for the plummer service? “Incongruous” is defined as: 1. Not in agreement, as with principles; 2. Not in keeping with what is correct, proper, or logical. Fortunately, trade unions protect consumers by assuring that plumbers and electricians adhere to specific training to insure that training is correct, proper and logical. Ref lexology also has national and international accreditations to assure consumers the person taking your money will have the training that is correct, proper and logical, specific to ref lexology, and yet Idaho allows anyone to call themselves a “ref lexologist,” which degrades

ref lexology in the eyes of consumers. Fortunately, Washington state saw this problem and passed a law assuring that anyone calling themselves a ref lexologist was fully qualified to provide therapeutically effective ref lexology. Not so in Idaho. Fortunately for consumers, a few years ago a massage law was passed in Idaho to insure consumers that they will have competent, trained massage therapists accepting your money for treatment. Not so with ref lexology. Ref lexology was excluded from the law because it is NOT massage, but a most effective healing modality in itself. However, consumers are still prey to anyone calling

T H E W E E K LY S U N •

themselves a “ref lexologist.” I’ve called around to a number of spas offering “ref lexology” and not one has a trained ref lexologist, yet they call it “ref lexology,” misleading the public. When I ask, spas tell me they have massage therapists who have had some classes, which is why ref lexology has not gained the respect as a healing modality that it deserves. You never know what you are going to get without proper training. There is a great difference between a massage therapist with 15 hours of ref lexology training and a nationally accredited ref lexologist with 300-plus hours specifically covering ref lexology. A Chinese clinical trial found ref lexology

DECEMBER 10, 2014

by trained ref lexologists to be 93 percent effective in treating 63 different health conditions not attained by foot massage. If you haven’t tried quality, therapeutically effective ref lexology, it’s time. Don’t suffer any longer. I specialize in pain relief and invite you to visit my website www. ref lex4usa.com to discover what my 12 years’ experience with Symbiotic Systems Advanced Therapeutic Ref lexology can do for you. Mark Cook, ART (Regd), is based in Hailey and one of only 18 USA reflexologists to attain membership on the International Register of Advanced Reflexologists. alidor has learned his basic manners. He has not jumped on anyone since day two. I will not pet him or give him any reward for jumping up, ever. He sits politely to go in or out a door, including his crate. He has also stopped running through my legs; he almost tripped me many times the first three days. Imagine what would have happened had I allowed that behavior and he weighed 65 pounds! He would have knocked me over. I stopped the running between my legs by just gently squeezing my legs together so he couldn’t pass through. This week, we are focusing on child-proofing him. The one thing to remember is that NO PUPPY OR DOG IS EVER CHILDPROOF! Dogs and puppies are living beings, and while we can do lots of things to make them understand they

must be tolerant and gentle, they are still dogs and make mistakes. The first part of this is to teach all children to respect dogs and puppies and handle them with care. I will never leave a puppy and a child together unattended or allow rough play. My rule of thumb is: stay as close in feet to the dog/puppy as the child’s age in years. So, if Kalidor is with a four-yearold, I am never farther than four feet away. Kalidor is learning that good things come from a hand near his bowl. I do this by putting an empty bowl down with one kibble in it. I let him eat that. Then, I put a few kibbles in my hand with a closed fist and hold my hand in the bowl. When Kalidor tries to nibble my hand to get the food, I just keep my hand closed. When he backs away, especially if he sits, I drop the kibble in the bowl and let him have it. Many people try to take the food away, then give it back. This can be a recipe for disaster

and teaching food aggression. We are also working on keeping a “Down Stay” for petting from children. He needs that skill first before I introduce children. If Kalidor has some basic commands, it is very fun for children to give the command and then give him a treat. Children need to learn to give a puppy a treat with a flat hand, just like feeding a horse. When children learn how to give commands to a puppy that has skills, it sets them both up for a relationship of respect. As Kalidor gets older, he can learn parlor tricks so children are interested in interacting with him. movie review JON RATED THIS MOVIE

‘Penguins of Madagascar’

Crazy Birds

Sponsored by your friends at The Weekly Sun BY JONATHAN KANE

N

ot having seen the previous DreamWorks Animation features with Madagascar in the title, I really didn’t know what to expect from the new entry, “Penguins of Madagascar.” To say that I was pleasantly surprised is an understatement, as the film was totally enchanting and highly recommended for parents looking for an afternoon diversion with the kids. Any movie that can open with Werner Herzog delivering his maniacal documentary voiceover is a winner for everyone.

T H E W E E K LY S U N •

The penguins of the title have had parts in the first three movies, but this one is their chance to shine. There are four of them— Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private—and they are all voiced excellently. They form a penguin commando team and in the movie are forced to take on the evil octopus named Dave, brilliantly cast as John Malkovich. Dave has been tormented by the cuteness of penguins since he was once the featured attraction at the Central Park Zoo. In true mad scientist mode, he has created an evil ray that will turn the cute, cuddly birds into monsters. That our heroes’ must stop him is elementary, my dear Wat-

son. They join up with a spy team called the North Wind helmed by a dog voiced by Benedict Cumberbatch in their pursuit to stop Dave. Eric Darnell and Simon J. Smith direct the picture admirably off of an excellent screenplay by John Aboud, Michael Colton (a former Harvard Lampoon editor) and Brandon Sawyer. One sequence in Venice stands out as topnotch, but the action is always frenetic and entertaining. As with the classic Warner Brothers cartoons, DreamWorks decides to take a crazy edge to the proceedings and it’s most welcome. It is, overall, a real treat for the whole family. tws
