ood River Valley resident Christina Tindle will compete in the 2015 Air Race Classic [ARC]. The aerial derby sees female teams pilot their craft across nine states over four days, completing a 2,400-mile-long course. Fif-

ty-six planes will enter this year’s ARC. A master of clinical psychology and registered personal/executive coach, Christina Tindle, M.A., is professionally trained to tackle the daunting. Her professional acumen includes counseling and guidance in domestic violence, substance abuse, sexual as-

sault and women’s issues. Tindle assists in counselor training programs, is a teen leader, a cancer treatments guidance counselor and creative professional counselor encompassing mental and morale guidance of Olympic athletes. “My professional skills are a perfect match for race requirements,” said Tindle.

“Positivity builds proficiency and confidence; it’s what keeps me in the air.” Her coaching and goal-clarity skills have readied pilot Tindle and navigator Mary Ann Richards in their “Team Air Hearts” craft for ARC strategic and endurance rigors. Pilot teams begin their journeys at 8 a.m., June 22 in Fred-

ricksburg, Va. Waiting along the daylight-fly-only ARC course are stops in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee and Alabama. With good airmanship and good fortune, the female crews will reach their 5 p.m. finish mark in Fairhope, continued on page 5

‘I call it like I see it’ BY DICK DORWORTH

Jacob Greenberg is chairman of the Blaine County Commissioners and has been a commissioner since 2012 when he was appointed by Governor Butch Otter to fill the seat of resigning commissioner Tom Bowman. Greenberg, who has lived in Blaine County for 32 years, was born in Haifa, Israel, 62 years ago. His family moved to the United States when he was 5, first to New York and then to California, where he lived and attended high school in Newbury Park, a town that, along with Thousand Oaks, was a master-planned community by the Janss Investment Company. Coincidentally, Bill Janss, who owned and operated the Sun Valley Company from 1964 until 1977, was a key player in that master-planned community as well as in the development of the Wood River Valley. Greenberg graduated from California State University, Northridge, with a degree in business administration. He and his wife, Jeanne, first visited the Wood River Valley because her brothers lived here, and Jacob and Jeanne liked it immediately. “We moved here because we loved the area,” Greenberg said. “It was as simple as that.” It was also a good place to raise their two sons, Joshua, who was 5 when they moved, and Jeremy, who was 3. Greenberg has owned and operated three restaurants, including Shorty’s Diner in Hailey, as well as a construction company and a small business-owner consulting firm. He considers his “solid business background” a key

reason he is well suited to be chairman of the Blaine County Commissioners at this time. Greenberg has an ongoing involvement with several economic groups in the Wood River Valley, including Sun Valley Economic Development, Fly Sun Valley Alliance, Wood River Electrical Plan (WREP), Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Council, Friedman Memorial Airport Authority and the I Have a Dream Foundation. His website declares that he “…is committed to fiscal responsibility and economic development.” Greenberg sees the main challenges facing Blaine County at this time involve infrastructure, particularly funding for road and bridge building and “getting a handle” on natural resources, most notably water. As roads and bridges deteriorate and more water users compete for less water throughout the West, including Blaine County, Greenberg says that the challenge will be to figure out how to be part of the solution and not part of the problem. He considers his primary strength as a public official is that “I call it like I see it. I am not a politician in the usual sense of the term, but I have the ability to make decisions. Even people who disagree with me and the decisions I make have faith in my due diligence and my willingness to do the leg work to get the job done.” When asked whether he was a skier and what he enjoyed as recreation, Greenberg replied, “I do it all, except for hang gliding.” tws

Fresh goodies to hit Valley next week

BY MARIA PREKEGES

Summer is here and that means it’s time for the Ketchum Farmers’ Market. The 2015 Ketchum market will debut Tuesday, June 9th from 2–6 p.m. The location is the same as in past years, on East Avenue and 4th Street in Ketchum, just east of Giacobbi Square. You’ll find a variety of vendors this year, from farmers selling fruits, vegetables and flowers, to cheese and meats, as well as many fresh-baked goods, breads, pies, jams and sauces. The list goes on. There will also be crafts and specialty products like jewelry, pottery, clothing and the like. A little bit of everything is what you’ll find. Different musicians will also be on hand each week for your listening pleasure. Parking for the Ketchum market is available on the surrounding streets, but it’s recommended that people ride their bikes, bus, or walk. There are bike racks located on either end of the market. Of course, bring your reusable bags to fill them up with wonderful goodies of all types. Kaz Thea, manager of both the Hailey and Ketchum farmers’ markets, describes the Ketchum market: “It’s a lovely, family-friendly, free-to-the-public community event. You

can meet the farmers who grow the delicious, healthy food sustainably. You can sample products, and there will also be information about some nonprofits in the Valley to learn about at the markets. You can enjoy a social outing and listen to live music; there will be numerous crafts for sale; and all of the products are local and all products must be raised or grown sustainably.” Ketchum Mayor Nina Jonas offers her thoughts on the farmers’ market: “The market is a social hub that adds vibrancy, it supports the farm economy and Fresh fruits and vegetables are just a few of the items you’ll find at the Ketchum and burgeoning entrepreneurs, Hailey farmers’ markets. n Saturday, June 6th, the inaugural ‘Music From The Hart’ fundraising event will take place at the Wood River Sustainability Center in Hailey. The event takes place between 5 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. and tickets are $20. There will be live music, food and drink as well as a silent auction. Founded in 2015 and based in Hailey, ‘Music From The Hart’ is comprised of a group of professional musicians, teachers and local business owners who believe in helping people through music therapy. A lifetime music enthusiast and professional musician, Hart Gibson has been performing and teaching music lessons to Wood River Valley community members for over a decade. Two years ago, Hart decided to take his passion for performing and helping others to the next level and ‘Music From The Hart’ was formed. After many months of hard work, Hart’s dream of a music therapy-related institute has become a reality in the form of ‘Music From The Hart,’ a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization. Hart describes the organization: “We are a music therapy organization. We have programs that work with cognitive skills, Neurostimulation, and socialization. We offer music programs for disabled children and adults. We also play for people with emotional or physical challenges.” Hart continues explaining some of the organization’s goals: “We are working on proposals for in-

The Wood River Valley braces its palate and steels its stomach as south Valley firefighters prep their saucepans for the inaugural 5-Alarm Chili Cook-Off and Disco Bash hosted at the Sun Valley Brewery in Hailey, Saturday, June 6. “This is a great event for bringing out the family to enjoy each other, our organization and some great chili offerings,” said Craig Aberbach, City of Hailey fire chief and Wood River Fire & Rescue assistant chief. “It’s fun, first and foremost, but there’s still a little competition in it,” Aberbach said. Public entry is welcomed, and event organizers have remained open an additional week to accommodate late entrants. Pre-sale tickets are available through Hailey Coffee Co., Sun Valley Brewery, Atkinsons’ Markets and the fire departments themselves. Medals go to all entrants, but trophies, specially crafted for the event, await the winners in four separate entry categories. Awards will be given to best civilian chili, public safety chili and business/restaurant chili, with a top prize to best overall chili. Gate time for chili prep is 2:30 p.m. and a panel of chili experts is assembling to judge entrants’ offerings. Carbonate Street will be closed by permit for the

event. The cook-off conclusion hears music courtesy of High Street Band swinging from 8:30 p.m. onward. Serving the community since prior to 1884, the

City of Hailey fire department relies on the support of its fellow Valley residents. Fundraising proceeds enable contracting of outside instructorship, safety training courses and loss support for persons or families. “Our area is a unique, giving community which the fire departments support in many unseen ways,” says Aberbach. “Any funds raised go directly back into supporting the community that supports us.” “This cook-off and disco bash is meant to be fun,” said Aberbach. “We want to bring firefighters and their families together for sharing the other side of life with our professional associates and community members.”

Fire departments Valley-wide hope to build upon the interlinked relationship shared between departments and the civilian public. Seven county departments will converge June 13 for an “Urban Interface Drill,” the first to be hosted by Hailey. A Wicked Wednesday raffle and music takes place July 8 at The Wicked Spud and the next quarterly installment of bingo is set for August. Most recently, area student Emilia Morgan was recognized for her fire-themed essay and praised for her rendering of a fire department medallion, which has been pressed in her honor and is now in circulation throughout the Valley. “We are excited about the disco bash and our other upcoming functions,” said Aberbach. “We intend to support and grow our great community.” Cook-off entry is $5, disco tickets $25. Firehouse beer is being poured in limited supply, and specialty pint glasses will also be up for grabs. “Huge thanks are owed to everyone in the community for their great support,” said Aberbach. “But, the secret ingredient to my chili is still confidential.” For cook-off registry, contact Dannie at 208-3372188, Hailey Fire Department at 208-788-3147 or e-mail southvalleyfirefighters@gmail.com

Silver Creek continues to fish well and astonish anglers with a prolific brown drake hatch! Don’t think that this event is over, as things are still happening, big time, through the upper end of Point of Rocks through the Willows, all the way to Highway 20. This action should continue at least until the weekend. Varying amounts of the bug will pronounce the end of the hatch, but as long as we keep seeing massive spinner falls like we saw over the weekend, we can expect to fish this hatch to some degree for at least the rest of this week and into the weekend. On The Nature Conservancy section of the Creek, the PMD, Baetis and Callibaetis hatches have been wonderful and prolific. Midday hatches have the fish locked in and we can expect this action to last until the dry heat of summer when the Trico arrives. The fishing with Mouse flies continues to produce massive brown trout, and we expect this action to go on all summer long as the rodents are as abundant as bugs on the river this year. We want to say thank you to all of you out there for the support since opening day. Picabo Angler survives on the love of our fellow angler and your generosity has impact and deep meaning to our business. Thank you! Elsewhere, the South Fork of the Boise is fishing pretty well, and the river is fishing at drift boat levels. Salmon fly activity should begin to pick up, with the heat of June almost upon us. In the meantime, fish big nymphs and the color red subsurface for decent action. The lower Lost River is fishable and at a decent flow as rains continue to diminish the call for water in the area. This means we have at least one more fishery running clear – just keep an eye on the cfs. The Upper Lost is not clear, with the exception of Wild Horse Creek, but the volume of water coming down makes this a tough undertaking as well. The Big Wood and Little Wood rivers are most likely a week or more away from coming into shape, but when they do, the fishing should be extraordinary with Green Drake and Stonefly patterns. Expect the Little Wood to fish sooner than the Big Wood, but only by a few days. Once these systems clear, the Upper Lost River system should follow with clear, fishable water. We’ll see you on the river in the evening the rest of the week, enjoying the big brown bugs! Happy Fishing Everyone!

Enter 23-year-old Hailey local, Jacob Frehling – a man of the people, for the people. “I love the crowd and I love the town,” said Frehling of his fellow friends and neighbors. “This Valley is full of hilarious characters.” A skater, voracious imbiber, water lover and avid musical enthusiast, Frehling has returned home with a hunger to satisfy. He realized that the cast of colorful characters he calls his neighbors were in dire need of scrumptious morsels during or after those long dark sessions of drinking and partying. The light bulb went on, and Dumpster Dog Frank Co. was born. “I wanted to bring something that went against the grain,” said Frehling of his wiener-slinging, late-night grub stop. “I’m hoping to mix the pot with tasty, greasy nourishment made fresh – right before bedtime.” Peddling his after-hours casedmeat wares April through October, Dumpster Dog is a welcome blend of business with local “hodgepodge-ery.” “These are my people,” said Frehling of his clientele. “I grew up with them, and I take pride in supplying a delicious menu with seasonally fresh weekly specials.” Frehling enjoys living the day; about the future, he is open and optimistic. “The Wood River has something for everyone,” he said. “I just want to keep on keepin’ on with the great vibe of this great town.” Check out Dumpster Dog and Jacob Frehling on Main Street in Ketchum or visit facebook.com’s DDFrankCo. So there you have it, and now you know. That’s one more degree bringing us closer to home.

Growing up, my family had a beloved golden retriever, Buck, whose hobbies included chewing rocks and chasing imaginary windmills. Buck was a mainstay in our household: from my younger brother’s first lost tooth to the highs (and lows) of my high school career, he was there for it all. But by the time Bucky ascended the pearly puppy gates, I was already living in New York and had neither the space nor the time to parent a pet responsibly. On Saturday morning, inspired by a status update on the Wood River Animal Shelter’s Facebook page, I drove to the shelter and, with a leash and a coterie of chew toys in hand, adopted my very first puppy – all on my own. World, meet Cecele, pictured here – the newest addition to Team TWS. Stay tuned for more dispatches from the first-time puppy parenting chronicles!

The Sock Elf

He mesmerizes you with magic, While stealing from your dryers... He makes you want to cry, And hang up “lost” flyers. His cave is filled with warmth and neatly knitted wool, His face so cute, even grandmother would want to pull. But one must not be fooled by a sock elf’s face, When you see it peek out, From your pillow’s case… Beware of the crime they are about to commit, Especially if your socks are double-knit. They’ll purge your dresser, bit by bit. They can take on any IQ, fitness, or wit. Just when you think your wool is on lockdown, The sock elf will appear, And deliver the knockdown. So hide your socks with a GPS attached, Sock elves will take all of them, Stolen, missing, patched.

Heads Up For The Sun’s 101

The Frustrations Of Knowing

By Brennan Rego

Twice a year, The Weekly Sun team produces our 101 Things To Do magazine. And each time we write the mag, I’m always imthe weekly pressed at just how many awesome opportunities the Wood River Valley has to offer! This summer’s issue of 101 will be out on the stands from Fairfield to Stanley this weekend; be sure to pick up a copy so you’re looped in to all the inside secrets and good times the Valley has to offer this season. Plus, you’ll get to see what our number one staff pick is for summer 2015… For this summer’s issue, we divided our 101 suggestions into eight easy-to-find sections that appeal to a wide variety of activity preferences and daily moods. The sections are: Art (Music, Theaters & Theatres and Visual Arts), Exercise, Food, Nightlife, Outdoor Adventures, Pamper Yourself, Pets, and Style & Shopping. We also curated an eight-page, day-by-day calendar of events just to make sure none of us who spend time in the Valley have any excuse to say “I’m bored; there’s nothing to do today!” at any point during the summer. Growing up in the Valley, I learned at quite a young age that saying “I’m bored” is just not going Want to see the full cover? Pick up this summer’s issue this weekend. to fly around here, and for great reason. Whenever I was in a bored mood as a child, my parents and the other adults I looked up to would tell me that there’s always something fun to do in the area, you just have to be willing to get out there, find it and do it. After producing this summer’s 101, I couldn’t agree more. Each day from July 4 through October’s Trailing of the Sheep Festival is jam-packed with opportunities for making great memories. So, this weekend is the perfect time to bust out your own calendars and start marking off the events in 101 that appeal the most to you. That way, you’ll be sure not to miss them. My personal favorite summertime activity is also one of the area’s simplest. In my opinion, nothing beats a great hike on one of our Valley’s numerous and breathtaking trails. Inhale the pineand sage-scented air; stop by a creek, take your hiking boots off and dip your feet in for a minute; enjoy the expansive vistas that stretch before our mountainous skyline (if you’ve gained enough elevation); get lost in a botanical exploration of the many local wildflowers and native plants; see and hear all sorts of Western wildlife, from bugs and butterflies to deer and elk and of course our lovely array of beautiful birds (from hummingbirds to bald eagles). And, the best part about hiking is that your own two feet can take you anywhere—for free. I sincerely hope you all enjoy a fun, productive and memorable summer this year. Don’t forget to send us photos of all your excellent adventures; we’ll be sure to run them in The Sun (send photos including caption info to brennan@theweeklysun.com).

STRAWBERRY MOON Noun. A full moon – the lunar phase categorized by an ecliptic longitudinal difference of 180 degrees between the Sun and Moon – that occurs once in the lunar year, usually in the beginning of June. Called the Strawberry Moon because of its low position in the sky and the warm glow that results from the refraction of light through the Earth’s atmosphere. Last night was the 2015 Strawberry Moon. “Call me Caitlyn.” -- Caitlyn Jenner, FKA Bruce, in a Vanity Fair post-transition cover spread and exclusive interview. On Monday, Caitlyn nearly broke the Internet – not to mention the record for the time it took to gain a million followers (heretofore awarded to Barack Obama when he joined the Twitterverse on May 18). BY JOELLEN COLLINS

R

anging from a Doctors Without Borders surgeon working in the heart of Africa to the peace-loving Hindu meditating in privacy, most of us have to make daily choices about our involvement with a fractured world. On the same day I reveled in the sun’s presence, I prepared to offer a sewing bee designed to make colorful dresses for Haitian orphans, my very minor hope of the possibility of healing through love. Short of knowing how to eliminate hatred, neither of these actions contributed much to solving the chaos around us. Occasionally selfish use of my time does help me to be a better person, yet I often bewail my lack of effort beyond my doors. Could this be the great conundrum of our time? “Salt of the Earth,” the documentary I saw a few days ago, crystalized my conflicts. The film chronicles the work and philosophy of renowned humanitarian and photographer Sebastiao Salgado. Much of the movie is what I might term an exquisitely photoJoEllen Collins—a longgraphed account of time resident of the Wood man’s inhumanity River Valley—is a teacher, to man, exposing the writer, fabric artist, choir victims of famines, member and unabashedly recalling Holocaust proud grandma known as images. While I ab- “Bibi Jo.” sorbed this reality, Salgado’s images of nature’s splendor also are haunting. Nature appears better behaved than man. While I found the documentary difficult, I am not afraid of seeing truthful and often sad images at a movie theater. Like the ancient Greeks, I believe “entertainment” is cathartic and often serves an immediate way to remind the audience of “others.” There is room for laughter, education, empathy, romance and horror in what we view. I was not offended by the gruesomeness of Salgado’s records, also observing wretched men, almost literally slaving in despicable workplaces. However, along with depictions of children starving when their government could have helped, I keep remembering the positive, beautiful photographs of the renewal that Salgado experienced and created when he left the carnage and returned to his native Brazil. Since the 1990s, he and his family have devoted their efforts to restoring the many acres that have been lying fallow and treeless for decades on his family’s farm in the Atlantic Forest. The project is now a luscious nature reserve, the Instituto Terra, dedicated to reforestation, conservation, and environmental education. I only fled a movie theater once, during Roman Polanski’s “Repulsion,” starring Catherine Deneuve. I wonder, if I saw it now, would I be inured to the blood and gore, having matured with the advent of television news filtering through daily routines, the rise of worldwide Internet connections, often frightening, showing us, finally, what I had learned as a girl though censored newsreel accounts and some heroes’ recollections. Of course, I also witnessed the sight of the first man on the moon, the happy comedies of early television such as The Lucy Show, and thousands of hours delighting in TV or the cinema. We can learn from observing man’s inhumanity or by laughing at his foibles. In a snobby way, I think the very people who should view Salgado’s film won’t. Oh well, perhaps laughter is stronger. I just love the flicks – knowledge and frustration aside.

unter Frye, a senior at Wood River High School, was born to serve. The Eagle Scout has spent the last four years in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) in preparation to become a Navy SEAL. “I want to serve my country and make a difference in the world,” Frye said. “It’s definitely possible.” Next year, Frye will start the ROTC program at the University of Idaho. “I love the military. I love the brotherhood and the best friends that I have and I love the opportunities that the military offers. In college, I’ll be switching from being a reservist to officer training and from being a cadet to an officer.” While in high school, Frye has gone for a long weekend every month for training and drill and a heavy dose of bookwork that focuses on the profession an individual plans to go into. “I also attended a three-week boot camp in California. There was a lot of marching and physical fitness and we also learned Navy rules and requirements, like how to salute.” Frye is headed to the Naval Special Warfare Command and SEALs (Sea/Air/ Land) training. “I’m looking to challenge myself and it was the only job that interested me. Once I checked it out, I fell in love with it. The brotherhood is a big part of it, especially in the Special Warfare unit. Some of the things we work on include flying helicopters, combat scuba diving, night operations and marine martial arts.”

Once a year Frye and his unit will go for a two-week advanced training and he can pick the category of field operations he wants to work on, like land navigation, escape and evacuation techniques, weapons proficiency training and cold-weather warfare. “It’s a lot of fun and you get to hang out with great people.” Frye’s last drill will be in August and then he starts at the University of Idaho where he will spend four years in the officers’ training program. While in high school, Frye trained for two years in Boise on the weekends and then in Salt Lake City. He is also a PADI [Professional Association of Scuba Diving Instructors] certified scuba diver, having gotten his accreditation in the Philippines while he was there with his mother doing humanitarian work by building houses. Eventually, to become a Navy SEAL, he will train for a year and a half. “It’s the hardest training that the military offers and only a small percentage make it. But I’m so pumped to compete and so excited. I’ve been in the program for four years and I have four to go. My two best friends are also going to the U of I with me, so that’s great.” When asked how long he wants to be in the military, Frye replied, “For as long as you stay in or stay alive. If I retire, I’ll start a career as a mechanical engineer. I’ll major in it because it’s fun – I like taking ideas from my head and making them a reality.” The same way this determined young man is making his bright future a reality. tws

Moving On

BY KENYA SCHOTT

I

grew up in a healthy, functioning and supportive family. I did not had to face any devastating hardships. Sure, I am a teenager, I do get annoyed with my parents at times. However, I consider myself lucky to have had the upbringing I did. I was unaware of the many domestic-violence cases that happen in what I thought was the perfect little resort town. Since working for The Advocates, I have seen a different side of the community. The victims that come to the safe house are often scared and have nowhere to go. After seeing this, I worked to educate my community about those who are less fortunate. I am working toward speaking up for those who don’t have a voice. I do not believe in tolerating any acts of violence. The ideas promoted by Green Dot [a program promoting the reduction of power-based personal violence] are not only important in high school, but remain relevant throughout a person’s entire life. At my internship, I have learned how to recognize potential red dot situations [the individual choice to do nothing] and what I can do to replace them with green dots. In addition, not only

am I aware of red dots, but I can point them out to others, as well. I can think of numerous examples where I was able to be an active bystander because of my knowledge of the Green Dot program. My aunt and I were leaving a latenight hotdog stand when we saw a drunk man crossing the street. I told my aunt she should go around the corner to make sure that the man was not going to drive a car. Thankfully, we saw him go into a restaurant instead. Another time I was at a party with some of my friends when I saw one of them getting pulled away by a guy. My friend was very intoxicated and it was evident the guy had plans to take advantage of her. I followed them outside and simply started chatting with them. I was distracting my friend from the guy she was with. I stayed with her for the rest of the night until I drove her home. I did not want to embarrass either of them, so I didn’t use a direct approach. A distraction was all that was needed. The skills I have learned at this internship are valuable and I know I will continue to use them for the rest of my life. Becoming part of The Advocates was one of the best decisions I’ve made. I want to thank Heidi Cook

MOVIE REVIEW

‘Far From The Madding Crowd’ BY JONATHAN KANE

H

English soap

aving never been a fan of period piece romances, I was pleasantly surprised at how smitten I was with the new film, “Far from the Madding Crowd” – an adaptation of Thomas Hardy’s 1874 classic. Set on the gorgeous southern coast of England, where the film was also made, the movie has a feminist bent as it tells the story of a young woman, Bathsheba Everdene (yes, the same last name as the modern-day heroine of “The Hunger Games”), and the three men that seek to make her their wife. Everdene is played beautifully by Carey Mulligan – an actress that seems to be getting better and better. Born a poor orphan, she goes to the countryside to live with a relative, where she meets the next-door neighbor, Matthew Schoenaerts (Mr. Oak), a successful farmer. Soon, fate deals them both new hands as Mulligan in-

herits her uncle’s farm and Oak loses his, only to end up working for Mulligan as a shepherd. Of course, it’s complicated by the fact that Everdene earlier turns down his request for marriage. Enter her lonely but handsome and wealthy new neighbor, played expertly by Michael Sheen, who also seeks her hand, and a dashing captain in the army played by Tom Sturridge. Sturridge has the least to offer, but Mulligan falls for his romantic side and they marry. Many plot complications follow, but we are always rooting for Mulligan to come to her senses and unite with the stoic Mr. Oak. Kudos must go to the creative team that has made this old classic fresh again for modern audiences, beginning with the Danish director Thomas Vinterberg. Major credit also goes to the screenwriter David Nicholls for crafting such a fine adaptation and to Charlotte Bruus Christensen for the

Tragopogon dubius, aka Black Salsify, an edible vegetable with bright yellow flowers.

This plant, which I found in downtown Hailey, is known by many names, including Yellow Goatsbeard, Western Salsify, Wild Oysterplant, Shepherd’s Clock and (in the 16th century) Johnny-go-tobed-at-noon. In early June, each yellow flower opens up for just one day from dawn to noon for fertilization (a whole field can turn yellow in a morning). Once the flowers close, they become seed heads that remind me of dandelion’istic parachute seed distribution systems. Originally imported from Eurasia, the species now grows throughout North America as a weed. However, the young roots, leaves, shoots and flowers are good to eat raw, boiled, steamed, fried, baked, pureed, etc.

Blaine County Noxious weeds

ere at the Blaine County Weed Department (BCWD) we’ve heard the same question a few times and we thought we’d address it in case there were others thinking the same thing. The question is: “If you have noxious weeds on your property, does the county make you use pesticides to control them?” The answer is no. We use an Integrated Pest Management Plan (IPM) when it comes to managing noxious weeds in Blaine County. This means that we employ the use of pesticides, biocontrol, mechanical control, and environmental factors when working with noxious weeds. If the BCWD determines there are weeds on your property that need to be removed (remember, it is state law that property owners manage the noxious weeds on their property), we will work with you on the best course of action for the type of weeds you have, the location of the weeds, and how your property is being used. Sometimes biocontrol is the best option, sometimes weed-whacking or hand-pulling will do the trick, and sometimes pesticides are most effective. We want to help you make the

best decision for the land that you have, and we work closely with land management agencies on best practices and current trends on noxious weed management. Last summer the BCWD, Environmental Resource Center, Wood River Land Trust, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service built an insectary at the Sawtooth National Recreation Area headquarters north of Ketchum. The insectary will house weevils that will be used to fight the spread of spotted knapweed throughout the county, and we anticipate the weevils will be ready for harvest and use by the community in 2016. Any time you have questions about controlling noxious weeds or state law requiring property owners to manage noxious weeds on their land, don’t hesitate to contact us at 788-5516. love the flower of the Swamp Black Gooseberry, also known as the Prickly Black Gooseberry. It is a light, delicate flower that falls in racemes, each flower attached to a central stem with short, slightly curved stems of equal length. The stems holding the light-green flowers with a pinkish red center are so delicate that the whole cluster of flowers flutters with the slightest breeze. Walking up the Bald Mountain Trail, these dangling flowers catch the light as they flutter. Right now there are so many of these flowers that, as I walk, I see constant small glints of light and I am twisting and turning my head to catch them all. The leaves are equally beautiful. They have a ma

ple-leaf-like shape, but much smaller, with lighter veins. The leaves are a soft jade color with gently toothed edges. They attach to the branch of the gooseberry bush with light stems that also flutter in the breeze. Currants and gooseberries belong to the same genus, Ribes, which is from an Arabic word meaning acidic. The main difference between these two berries is that currants have smooth stems and gooseberries have prickly stems. The thorns on the gooseberry bush can be quite large and can deliver a good stab, so beware! The prickly gooseberry can be tart and is probably best left for the bears to enjoy. I find berries curious. Many are delicious and many are poisonous. Sometimes it is the leaf that is more harmful than the ac-

tual berry. Some berries are poisonous to humans, but are not to other animals. For maximum reproduction it is helpful to be poisonous to the animals that do not help in the dispersal of the seeds and to be attractive to the animals that can spread the seeds in the most beneficial way. Berries in folklore and throughout history have had many different meanings, some positive, some negative. Some of the berry imagery is whimsical and beautiful and other times terrifying. Certainly thorny bushes have all kinds of stories attached to them. In old proverbs they signify haste: people are so anxious to eat the berries that they jump into the bush and become blind from the thorns. In newspaper parlance, the phrase ‘great gooseberry season’ is used to describe a period where there isn’t much headline news so tales such as the largest gooseberry are published instead (BERRIES AS SYMBOLS AND IN FOLKLORE, Courtney Alexander, Department of Horticulture, Cornell University’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, Ithaca, NY 14853). Positively identify any wild fruit before picking and eating it. Just because animals can eat it does not mean that a human can.

ext week, local farmers and food artisans will descend upon Ketchum and Hailey for the kickoff of the Wood River Farmers’ Markets (WRFM). Beneath their tents, a tantalizing selection of freshpicked, flavor-packed kale, beets, basil and berries and locally prepared foods will beckon. The weekly markets, which operate from 2 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays (in Ketchum) and Thursdays (in Hailey) through mid-October, are great for our producers, our health and our economy. Throughout summer and fall, fans of fresh local food flock to our downtown city cores for their farmers’ market fix. During peak season, as many as 2,000 people visit the Ketchum market, according to WRFM manager Kaz Thea. They go for the food, but also the scene— and many shop at nearby businesses while in town. The Ketchum market nets about $350,000 in a season, but the economic and social value to our community is considerably higher. A 2010 study of a farmers’ market in Pennsylvania found that 70 percent of customers patronize local stores and restaurants. In 2011, Boise’s Capital City Public Market generated an estimated $4.5 million in economic activity for the local

June 3, 2015

economy. Case studies reveal that for every dollar spent in local businesses, 30-45 cents stay in the area, versus in national chains, when only 15 cents end up benefitting the local community. Tonight, from 6 to 9 p.m., a street party outside the Play Hard Give Back building (corner of 7th Street and Warm Springs Road in Ketchum) will benefit Wood River Farmers’ Markets. Enjoy live music by Not All Doctors, food from The Haven food truck, and local beer and wine. Proceeds will help cover the $3,500 in city fees plus security costs required to operate the Ketchum market from June to October. Join the festivities and help support our farmers’ markets and local food! The Local Food Alliance aspires to create a healthy local food system and establish food security in the Wood River Valley. Need To Know

A recap of what’s going on in the world – and the headlines you won’t find on page one. CURATED BY LAUREL HOLLAND 1. BEAU BIDEN. Over the weekend, Vice President Joe Biden’s oldest son, Beau Biden, lost a fraught battle with brain cancer at the age of 46. An Iraq war vet who later served as the Attorney General of Delaware, Beau had been seriously considering running for Governor in 2016 and was seen by many as the Biden kid who’d follow in his dad’s footsteps. 2. PATRIOT ACT. Key elements of the Patriot Act – the law that gives the NSA the right to snoop in on your phone calls and online activity – expired on Sunday. For a rundown of what it all means and how it affects you, visit bit.ly/PatriotActFAQ. 3. SHADES OF GREY. Christian, that is. Fifty Shades of Grey author E.L. James announced Monday that she will release a new version of the chic-lit trilogy written from Christianity’s point of view. The book, Grey, will hit bookstores June 18. The Fifty Shades series – a latter-day version of Lady Chatterley’s Lover – has sold more than 125 million copies worldwide and spawned the hit flick from Universal Pictures starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson. The sequel, Fifty Shades Darker, is slated for a 2017 release.

4. OK, GOOGLE. Remember all those times you spoke to your smartphone, said “OK, Google...” and asked a question? Or tapped the microphone to dictate a text message? Chances are, Google kept every audio recording. And you can play them back to yourself. On Monday, Google launched its new “My Account” feature, which allows users to access that activity. On its website, Google says these recordings help it better recognize your voice – and more accurately accomplish tasks. If you’re a Google account holder, you can find the collection of recordings in a section called “Voice and Audio Activity.” The stored recordings can go back months, but it’s unclear how long Google retains these files. 5. TAPPING WI-FI TO CHARGE ELECTRONICS. Six Seattle homes have been rigged to provide power to small devices using Wi-Fi routers. Researchers from the University of Washington in Seattle have fitted these houses with devices that can convert the energy held in Wi-Fi signals into electricity. But don’t get carried away: it’s doubtful that your Wi-Fi router will be charging your laptop any time soon. The Federal Communications Commission limits routers to pumping out signals of 1 watt (a MacBook Air charger supplies 45 watts). For now, a unified Wi-Fi power distribution network that can power all your gadgets is still far off – but it could be the next step in designing an actually-smart smarthome.
