Carol Rank overcomes hip trouble By KAREN BOSSICK
C
arol Rank likes the feeling she gets from skating down a ribbon of snowy corduroy. So she wasn’t about to let a hip replacement—let alone six hip replacements— stand in her way. Carol thought of herself as a fit athlete as she played tennis and rode her horse through the jungles of the Philippines where her father served in the military. But her brother, Paul Rank, showed her otherwise when he introduced her to cross-country skiing after she moved to Ketchum 20 years ago. “I hated it. I remember going on Titus at Galena and I could not make it uphill—I was sucking air big time, Carol recalls. “I remember thinking how sorry our mother would be to lose a son because I was about to kill him! But when her horse became too old to ride, Carol tried cross-country skiing again. And
she got hooked. She not only competed in the Boulder Mountain Tour, she went to races in McCall and Yellowstone. “The more I did, the more I enjoyed it, and the fitter I became, she said. “It was relaxing and I loved the social aspect of it. Come summer, she took up biking. She biked ten miles from her home near Ketchum to her work as a dental hygienist in Hailey. And she rode in century rides. “Everything was geared around staying fit for winter, she said. When congenital hip trouble made skiing too painful by 2005, she welcomed surgery as a way to get back on track. But her body rejected the first four hips—she was allergic to the titanium in the artificial balland-socket joint. Doctors replaced the titanium with ceramic. But her body rejected that, too, because she was allergic to the antibiotics. This winter—after 10 surger-

O
wner Krista Gehrke has lived in the Valley for 11 years. She has been the owner of BCFC for the last 5 years, and is currently President of the Hailey Chamber of Commerce. She is very active in the Hailey Community, and is also a Papoose Club Member. Gehrke was born in Hailey, and her parents have been residents since the early 70’s. Blaine County Fitness has been around since about 1987 and evolved from its connection to the old Blaine County Hospital and a physical sports therapy connection with Dr. Levin. We pride ourselves on being a full service fitness center that serves the entire community, whether you’re just beginning or a full seasoned athlete. Having been owned and operated for about the past 9 years by long time Hailey residents, we have focused on being a clean, friendly, and affordable fitness center. We realize that the hardest thing about fitness is getting yourself to start, so we work very hard at making our customers feel comfortable about working out here. We have a huge variety of exercise classes, Zumba to boot camps, offered at all times of the day. We have the only racquetball court in the Valley and about everything else you need to aid yourself in your fitness conditioning. We recently added day care, through a connection with Teddy Bear Preschool offered Mondays through Fridays. We offer the lowest rates in the Valley and are “All Inclusive,” meaning everything is included with your membership, and we offer our customers monthly payments. If you’re not a gym member you can drop in anytime for a racquetball game or an exercise class for only $7. There’s really no reason for anyone not to drop in and give us a try. We’re in town and are clean, friendly, and affordable. Stop by and meet Krista and our staff. Your first visit is always free!
hen I found out we were moving to the Wood River Valley, I began researching our recreation options. Like many Blaine County residents, “quality of life” included “quality recreation.” I soon found the Blaine County Recreation District and all of its programs. Six years later, our options have grown in ways I couldn’t have imagined. Quigley Winter Park has Nordic skiing and sledding options close to home for many families. The yurt is inviting and warm and has completely transformed Quigley into a community destination, not to mention the hundreds of kilometers on the North Valley Trails and Galena Lodge. The Community Campus now houses the BCRD, with a Community Recreation Center in progress. With newly-formed indoor cycling, Pilates and boot camp classes already filling up in a few short months, and the outlook for the new fitness center to be completed fall 2010 is amazing. The BCRD Aquatic Center feels like a different place -- less institutional, more tropical-vacation. Thatchedshade structures, poolside gazebos, and KB’s burritos make it feel like a private swim club. A quality swim school and youth and adult swim teams make it a great place to inspire a love of water. And the adjacent bicycle pump park? Brilliant! Kids and adults lined up all fall to take their turn on the bumps and berms. Many rode their bikes from home, and all left with a smile on their face. And new this spring? Sand volleyball pits—right next to the Aquatic Center! I think our quality of life just reached “stellar.”
The Bead Shop
T
he Bead Shop in Hailey is an excellent location to come to, in order to get rejuvenated or re-energized; whether through the healing power of our gemstones or through the reward you feel when you create a beautiful piece of jeweled art in our studio. Many customers, who come to the store and learn to build their first piece of jewelry, exclaim how rewarding it is to learn this new skill, as well, how therapeutic it is. Today, many people are pursuing various non-traditional methods of healing and therapy. These alternative approaches, including “natural” medicine and acupuncture, employ the use of gemstones and their “healing” powers. Healing stones transmit their power through color and vibration. Experience their healing force in the body and learn to recognize the effect of gems and colors on the chakras, the body’s energy centers. People often say that when you are feeling overwhelmed or down, thinking positively about something that reminds you of good times, is helpful. The Bead Shop of Hailey wants you to be able to consider it a place to visit to create something healing and inspiring, allowing you to go back to that “good time” when you created that beautiful artwork! Come and re-energize or rejuvenate at The Bead Shop.

Youngest years: a valley full of fun By KATHLEEN L. TURNER
I
t’s no secret that there is a growing population of overweight children in the United States today. With activities that glue kids to keyboards and joysticks, leaving the simpler, more active pursuits in the dust, fitness sometimes takes a back seat. Not in Blaine County, however. Between the rugged outdoor lifestyles of most Wood River Valley parents, and some well-appointed built facilities, kids here have the best of all worlds. The Blaine County Recreation District offers plenty of programs for preschool through adult, helping all to stay engaged in mobile activities even during the shortest hours of the coldest months. “Indoor Playground” is a drop-in activity by the hour that allows preschoolers, accompanied by a parent or guardian, free play in the gym. Toys, scooters and lots of kid interaction keep little bodies busy and fit.
“Kid Zone” offers afterschool activities every school day, and special all day programs when school is in recess. Kids from kindergarten through fifth grade can engage in gym games, scramble up the climbing wall, build with Legos and participate in HUB activities after school. Day-long trips are available to kids on school recess days engaging kids to snowshoe, sled, raft, fish or hike. And, according to Dave Kier at BCRD, they’ve even installed a 20-foot-by-40-foot skating rink behind the HUB that allows ice skating as an after-school activity. Teens can participate in an open gym that includes basketball and soccer during lunch hours. Teens can also make reservations for spin classes and aerobics by calling the main BCRD reservation number at 788-2117. More information is available about BCRD programs on their Web site at www.bcrd.org. Very few places can claim their own kids’ ski hill as a
great way to work out extra energetic youngsters, but Blaine County has two. While the Sun Valley Resort offers top-notch instruction, equipment and a great ski program at Dollar Mountain, Rotarun is Dollar’s little sister to the south. Located just a few miles out Croy Canyon from the city limits of Hailey, the gentlest of hills makes learning to ski an option for many that otherwise not be able to afford the sport. Open Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., the area has witnessed the very first run for many now-famous ski racers and snowboarders. Night skiing begins February 5 on Fridays from 6 to 9 p.m. Phone 7881173 for more information. The Wood River YMCA also offers a wealth of activities, from swimming and climbing, to tae kwon do, to dance and yoga. A wide variety of memberships and plans are available to Blaine County residents, with free bus passes available for the asking, to make getting there easier. twp

Basketball was first played in Massachusetts in 1892 It was in January of 1892 that the first official basketball game was played, in Springfield, Massachusetts. Basketball was the brainchild of James Naismith, a Canadian who was teaching at a YMCA training school in Springfield, which prepared young men to go out and be instructors in YMCAs. Naismith was teaching physical education, but the winters were cold in Massachusetts, and his students were frustrated that they couldn’t go outside. He
wanted something physically challenging but that could be played indoors, in a relatively small space. He tried all kinds of new and old games, but nothing worked. Finally he remembered a game he had played as a kid in Canada, a game called Duck on a Rock. He took a few rules from that and adapted it into a game he called Basket Ball. He nailed peach baskets to the balcony on each side of the gym, but the baskets had solid bottoms,
so if anyone managed to get the ball in the basket someone else had to climb up and get the ball down. The rules evolved, and basketball caught on fast, helped by the spread of YMCAs. Naismith helped establish the sport at the college level, becoming head coach at the University of Kansas. By the time he died in 1939, basketball was an official Olympic event. twp

Ancient Skiers tour ski and heritage museum By KAREN BOSSICK
“I liked all the old single chair lifts because you could sit sideways on them and look at the people behind you... They ran flawlessly.”
D
ave Laster was perusing the early black Head racing skis in the KetchumSun Valley Heritage and Ski Museum when he bumped into a piece of his past. “Oh look,” said a woman who was standing nearby. “Those skis have the name Dave Laster on them. And there’s a man with Dave Laster on his name tag.” Such occurrences are commonplace when the Ancient Skiers, the Over the Hill Gang and other old-timers clubs hold their reunions in Sun Valley as they did last week. Though most now live in places like Seattle and Portland, they were among the stuff that Sun Valley legends are made of. Everyone who comes, it seems, has a story about the way Sun Valley used to be, noted John Hansen, who was among the organizers of this year’s reunion. Take Lois Woodward, for instance. She had a keen interest in everything the museum had on the Tenth Mountain Division. And why not? “I married two Tenth Mountain Division guys,” she said. Bill Arbruster, who lives in Seattle, recounted how he and his wife were engaged in Sun Valley in 1958. Then, he said, you could stay in a bunk bed in the Sun Valley dorm for $4.50 a night. The Ram Bar was converted into a restaurant every night at 6, he added. And one of the prime forms of entertainment was diving in the snow to see how big a sitzmark you could

make. “They used to rate them like they do figure skaters at the Olympics,” he said. Laster , it turned out, came to Sun Valley in 1960 and taught skiing for two years at a time when, he recalled, all the locals lived in Ketchum” so there was a wild nightlife.” He was hired to work on the Sun Valley Ski Patrol from 1961 to 1964, he said, because he didn’t have previous ski patrol experience.
“They wanted to teach me the Sun Valley Way. We were a working patrol, whereas most patrols were volunteer. And we used the Sun Valley toboggan, which was better at going straight downhill than sideways. And it’s still that way.” One of Laster’s most vivid memories is that of a fellow patroller who walked out on the top of the Bowls to throw out a hand charge for avalanche control. Just as he lit the 45-sec-
ond fuse, the cornice he was standing on caved in and he was enveloped with snow. In what seemed like an eternity, he struggled to free his arm to get rid of the charge. Just as he did, it exploded in mid-air. “He lived to be escorted around the mountain by me but it took a long time to get him out of the snow,” Laster said. “I think that’s one of the reasons we hired an avalanche expert like Butch Harper.” Laster recalled that he had a
roommate named Jim Ruscitto, who never had money at that time. “ I think that’s changed now,” he said, noting that the former roommate is now an architect who played a big role in building Sun Valley’s ski lodges, golf and Nordic center and outdoor pavilion. Laster said Sun Valley’s new gondola is okay but he misses the old Exhibition chair. “You could ski Exhibition all day without going to the top or the bottom of the mountain,” he said. “I liked all the old single chair lifts because you could sit sideways on them and look at the people behind you. They were slower, but the powder lasted longer. And they ran flawlessly.” And why are his old Head skis still in such good shape a half-century later? ”Well, I never liked them very well…So I got another pair of skis, and these ended up in the twp museum.”

I Hailey Sport & Spine Physical Therapy
H
ailey Sport & Spine Physical Therapy was established by Kim Mazik, PT, and has been providing continuous service to residents of the Wood River Valley since 2000. Kim is a graduate of Ohio State University with extensive postgraduate training as an orthopedic manual therapist assuring accurate diagnosis and treatment of musculoskeletal pain and dysfunction. Her approach is holistic and eclectic, blending joint manipulation, massage therapy, yoga, Pilates and other therapeutic exercise with an emphasis on educating clients, thus empowering patients to manage their symptoms outside of the clinic. Seeing a need for a physical therapist to treat women’s specific needs, Kim also obtained education to treat pre/postpartum pelvic and low-back pain, as well as incontinence. She has also studied with a specialist in the field of jaw/facial/head pain to learn effective treatment for ‘TMD’—temporomandibular dysfunction The number of athletic and recreational injuries in the area keeps Kim busy treating knees, shoulders, and other orthopedic. Kim and her staff have learned that the personal, hands-on approach is the most effective way to get results with patients. At Hailey Sport & Spine, each patient is given a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of their specific problem. Experience in conjunction with the expertise and compassion of our highly-trained staff allows us to confidently meet your rehabilitation needs. So the next time an injury or pain prevents you from pursuing your passions call Hailey Sport & Spine Physical Therapy, where we “treat the problem, not just the symptom.”
High Altitude Fitness
t started with a dream to build a better and different kind of gym—a gym that was affordable yet allowed us to work out the way we wanted. This dream became High Altitude Fitness. On January 10, 2000, High Altitude Fitness in Ketchum opened its doors to the public. With 1500 square feet and 19 pieces of equipment, the dream became reality. Holly and Kevin “The Pain” Mora were its first two employees. Over the next few months, the gym grew with members and trainers. High Altitude Fitness was quietly becoming the place to get a “real” workout. The first expansion in July of 2000 doubled the size of the gym to 3000 square feet. Within the next three years, HAF added another 2300 square feet. At this point, HAF was training Olympic athletes and champion power lifters, and was constantly improving everyone’s fitness level that walked through the doors. After one more expansion in 2006, HAF Ketchum was finally finished growing. This didn’t mean, however, that as trainers we stopped growing, too. In the fall of 2009, HAF added yet again another first in the Wood River Valley—kettlebell classes. These workouts have added another dimension to the Valley’s fitness. All of this leads us to January 2010, when HAF Hailey will open its doors. After bringing fitness and training to the North Valley, HAF decided that the need to train the South Valley was due; thus, 5000 square feet of pure fitness is what this gym will represent. So come train at the only gym in the Valley where you can get two gyms for the price of one—High Altitude Fitness Ketchum and High Altitude Fitness Hailey.

lthough Jaye was born in New York City, she was raised in Honolulu, Hawaii, for seven years. During that time she was surrounded by multiAsian and Hawaiian philosophies, giving her a broad belief system. With exposure to both Eastern and Western medical ideals, she entered nursing school at the University of Hawaii in Hilo, receiving her LPN certification and license in 1977. After working in nursing and as a veterinary assistant, she decided to move to Sun Valley. It made sense to her to go to massage school before leaving the Islands. After all, what’s better than receiving a massage after a long day of skiing? After going to massage school and finishing her apprenticeship in Hilo, she received her licensure from the State of Hawaii in 1984. From there she moved to Sun Valley in 1985, practicing several types of massage, including Swedish massage, Lomi Lomi massage, reflexology, sports massage and myofacial release. You can find her in Hailey at the Croy Street Exchange, Hailey Chiropractic Clinic and Spa Beleza, and in Ketchum at Ketchum Chiropractic Clinic, or relax in your own home with a house call.

or two-and-a-half years, Alysson Heazle and Jaime Stam have co-owned La Reverie Spa. Aly has lived here 11 years and Jaime, recently, for 10 years, but was born here and has family in Twin Falls. Aly was drawn here by her love of outdoor recreation and has family in Boise. Jaime has two daughters, ages 13 and 15, that keep her fairly occupied, but in her spare time, between laundry loads and other household duties, she likes to read, run, paint, draw, play piano and SCUBA dive (not in Redfish Lake). Aly also has two children, one four-year-old son and one 10 year-old daughter, that keep her busy. In her spare time, she likes to run and do winter activities. Both Jaime and Aly have worked at just about every (respectable) job to make ends meet, specifically in the hospitality industry. Jaime crunched numbers for years in various positions, but not necessarily her own. “This is a whole new ballgame. The entire atmosphere is very tranquil, all the way down to the koi pond in the courtyard out back.

My dad and my brother both live here, and after much exploring, many of my friends from high school moved back. I returned reluctantly and found an intense beauty and strength of community that I must have missed when I was a teenager. I love it here. We don’t live next to nature; we live immersed in it. And the people here are amazing! Directing, choreographing and dancing with Dirty Feet Dance Company, hiking our beautiful mountains, hanging out with the dogs, painting, and gardening are my passions. aron Hughston, owner of Tamarack Sports in Hailey, has lived in the Valley for five years. His connections include flying charter flights in and out of the Valley for three years and teaching National Rifle Association basic pistol and Utah concealed firearms classes. In his spare time, Aaron enjoys snowmobiling, fishing, camping, fitness, long-range target shooting and woodworking. Aaron started a fitness facility 15 years ago that is still in business today. Under new ownership, he purchased an established business in the Wood River Valley and transformed that into Tamarack Sports in April, 2009. “Tamarack Sports was opened because I noticed a lack of availability in general sporting goods, such as basketballs, soccer equipment and workout clothing in the Valley,” said Aaron. “We are only one of two Nike retailers in the state of Idaho and we offer a price match guarantee for all of our Nike products. “In an effort to expand our fitness line, we have recently added Under Armor and will continue to add product lines. “New this spring, Tamarack Sports will be carrying the full line of Louisville Slugger baseball and softball equipment. This is all in addition to the camping, fishing and hunting products that we carry at Tamarack Sports.”

his is health care at its basic level,” Sais Scott at KSKI. We have been in the Valley a short time, but already are making an impact. People are experiencing increased hydration and signs of better health. We have been shown that by changing your water, you really can change your life! So what is this water at The Water Store? Kangen water. Kangen is Japanese for “return to origin.” This Japanese medical device is hooked up to your tap where your water is filtered, then restructured through ionization. This process allows several important things TO happen to tap water, making it more useful to the body. Ordinary tap water becomes high in alkalinity, creates a true antioxidant water and breaks large water clusters into “micro-clusters,” increasing hydration and aiding in the displacement of acidic waste through the body’s normal channels of elimination, including kidney, bowel, lymph and skin; it also changes the cell membrane potential allowing nutrients in and acid waste out! Our goal at The Water Store is to educate people about true health and bring about a change in

The Wood River Sustainability Center is a year-round farmer’s market with an educational component. The Springs sell organic and natural products, mostly raised or grown within 100 miles of the Wood River Valley. Their Sustainability Center teaches people how to farm/garden for themselves, with a gardening library available to all.
