My ‘Big Fat’ Sun Valley Wedding Why this is the ideal hitching spot

I

BY MARIA PREKEGES

t might not be “My Big Fat Greek Wedding” with breaking plates and Bundt cakes, but scores of people do flock to the Wood River Valley area for fabulous weddings yearround. Some say it’s because of the beauty of the area and its ski-town charm, but what else makes this place so special and so popular for weddings? Heather Minor of Heather Minor Events states it simply: “It’s exclusivity, it’s something you can’t get anywhere else and it’s the beauty that is Sun Valley.” Minor has been in the wedding business in the Wood River Valley for over 10 years. She shared in an interview that while many locals choose to tie the knot in their hometown, 90 percent of the weddings she works on are from out of town. “With so many people coming here, it’s also a huge market and industry for this Valley,” she said. “It’s good for our local economy and town.” For many of the wedding guests, it’s their first time in Sun Valley and they can’t help but fall in love with the area. Many come back to visit long after the wedding has taken place. “Two of my clients from last summer have bought homes here, with many others coming back for vacation,” Minor said. Heather also spoke about what’s available here in the Valley. “From small to large weddings, there are a lot of options for Sun Valley,” she said. “From a really rustic wedding to a high-end wedding that you would see in New York, we can do it all. We’ve brought rentals in from Salt Lake City, Las Vegas and L.A. You can get people what they want.” Wedding planners also work closely with the

local purveyors and rental companies. That’s Entertainment is a premier event rental company in the Valley. “It’s a great place to have a wedding because there’s so much to do recreationally for your guests,” said That’s Entertainment co-owner Kristin Farrell in an interview. “They can go hiking,

whitewater rafting, horseback riding and mountain biking. There’s just a ton to do so it’s easy for your guests to plan a long weekend or even a week here. It’s a whole event instead of just a wedding.” Farrell also spoke about the latest wedding trends. “We are starting to see more and more clear tents instead of white tents to take advantage of the gorgeous night skies and the stars,” she said. “It’s a more open feeling, and allows you to capture all the views but still have the protection of a tent.” From the views to the activities and the charm, Sun Valley seems to be the place for the perfect “Big Fat” or small and intimate wedding—year-round. A lifetime of memories can begin right here when couples plan for the Valley to be the place where they say “I do.” tws

But What Do I Wear? Trends from the runway for 2015 BY YANNA LANTZ

Wedding trends for 2015 recently hit the runway, and designers have agreed on this year’s “in” styles for brides. Last year’s trends included the one-shoulder gown and cap sleeves. This year, look for a revamp of the British Invasion, colorful new interpretations of the modern romantic and a return of classic elegance with a new dramatic flair. With inspirations from the royal wedding in 2011 of Prince William and Catherine Middleton and the popularity of Britain’s “Downton Abbey,” vintage lace is back. Dresses with lovely lace necklines, backs and tulle were seen in abundance for the New Year’s brides-to-be, especially in Marchesa’s Spring 2015 Collection. “Marchesa’s Spring 2015 Collection pays homage to the brand’s signature aesthetic,” the brand’s Collection Statement says. “Full of grandeur and romance, the collection presents styles and silhouettes fit for every bride… ethereal and feminine gowns are shown in corded and re-embroidered laces.” Convertible tulle skirts dominated the runways of designers Hayley Paige and Theia, providing a convertible, ethereal-looking silhouette. Additionally, wedding designers have noticed an increase in vintage lace in décor orders; beautiful lace tablecloths and dressings are being ordered in “What is important bulk. In an ode to the in a dress is the wommid-19th century ballroom gown, off-the-shoulder an who is wearing it.” necklines have returned in full force, many utilizing lace. This gives brides a freer sense than last year’s –Yves Saint-Laurent cap sleeves, but still gives them some coverage. The Designer trend was a natural progression from last year’s trends for designers like Oscar de la Renta, allowing a draped elegant neckline.

Vera Wang’s tulle ball gowns with long sleeves and lace bodices have stunned runway-goers with cutout backs and detailing. Courtesy photo

New color palettes were seen in modern romantic dresses. Shades of blues, grays and mint stole the limelight from the usual suspects of blush, white and ivory. Designers Monique Lhuillier, Sareh Nouri, Theia, Naeem Khan, Kelly Faetanini and Alvina Valenta all showed color in their presentations for spring 2015 weddings. For those with a flair for the dramatic, capes provide a great convertible option. Lace capes, beaded capes, silk capes, and jewel-neck capes flooded the runway for this year. Everything from sheer illusion capes to Angel Sanchez’s full-length overcoat aim to help brides make two looks for the same dress. Similarly, the collar saw resurgence in a desire to return to classic elegance— many women do want to look like royalty on their big day. The collar provides a regal finish and a sense of the upper crust. High-neckline dresses had seen prosperity in the past few years, and the collar was a natural addition for designers Marchesa, Galia Lahav, Khan and Christos Costarellos. The 1930’s glam look is back, as well. Delicate fabrics, sparkling details and elegant draped dresses are rocking the lines of designers Zac Posen, Tara Keely, Rosa Clará, Lhuillier and Mira Zwillinger. Long sleeves, cowl necks, lace and beading were frequently used. No matter what the fashion trends are, couples always have the final say for their big day. In order to truly shine, find a dress that suits the venue, personality and aesthetic of the wedding. As Yves Saint-Laurent says, “What is important in a dress is the woman who is wearing it.” tws
