FIRST PERSON
I am Emma Lynch … and I work high above the ground I was in marketing before becoming a ropeaccess technician. I’ve always been an active person, but I just needed a change in scenery. At this company (Vert Industries), we do lots of different things, not just window cleaning. Painting and just general building maintenance, so a lot of leak detection issues and pretty much anything people can’t reach from the ground. We’re on ropes; we rarely work off platforms. We wear a full body harness and two ropes, so you’ve got a main working line and a back-up safety line. It’s almost like an apprenticeship. You start at level one, that’s a week’s course – and then you need 1000 hours and a minimum of 12 months’ experience to progress to level two. And then there’s level three, which is the most advanced riggers. It’s pretty safe. We don’t really get “danger money”. I wish, is the short answer. Everyone would be doing it otherwise, I think. The tallest building I’ve done was 70 storeys, or about 230 metres. When you’re there up that high it’s peaceful and quiet. You get beautiful views of the bay. The toughest bit is the physicality of some jobs. Each building’s different with the way you have to approach things, in terms of reaching. Reach is probably the most physical part of what we have to do. You’ll set up for a drop but you have to try and reach as wide as you can – obviously to reduce the amount of drops you do on a building. We start at the top and abseil down. How do we get back up? People presume we would climb back up, but we don’t. We use lifts or we use gravity. You’re generally two to three hours on a drop. It gets quite uncomfortable in the chair, and physically demanding on your back and hips if you’re there for say more than three hours. Once I had this guy sprint towards the window. I was bracing myself, as I didn’t know what he wanted to do. But he was just eager to say hello. This job tends to attract people who are adventurous and easy-going. It can be mentally stressful, some parts of the job, and figuring your way around a building, so you have to be a little more laid-back. Some people look at us and think we’re crazy and they’d never do it in a million years. But we do feel lucky; it’s a pretty cool job. ●

TIRED OF THE BONE-CRUNCHING CHILL OF BITTER WINTER? TIME TO ESCAPE. PETER WILMOTH SHARES THE MOST REJUVENATING HOT SPOTS.
Spice Islands
FEEL the HEAT
Yes, they are as exotic and magical as they sound. Janet DeNeefe, the queen of Ubud who moved from Melbourne to Bali more than 30 years ago, has taken her famous hospitality skills to sea. I was lucky enough to join Janet as she hosted an extraordinary boat trip to the fabled Spice Islands, the scenes of bloody battles three centuries ago between the English and the Dutch over control of the highly lucrative market for nutmeg and other spices. If you love history and food – and you’re keen for an adventure on the open ocean – you will relish this trip. With a small group, it will take you to still extremely remote places with the knowledge of history and, of course spices, shared daily by the redoubtable DeNeefe. The area today seems as remote as it was when in 1667 the Dutch swapped the tiny nutmeg-rich Run Island for Manhattan, which the English happily accepted. The visit to Run Island – about three kilometres long and one kilometre wide – is poignant in witnessing the simple life its residents enjoy, and its fascinating place in history. The trip is immersed in history. The boat sails through the Banda Archipelago, a network of small islands once the world’s only source of nutmeg and mace. But there are also wonderful meals shared on the boat, and some in hand-picked restaurants on the islands. There is also some superb snorkeling. A truly once-in-a-lifetime experience, and a chance to visit a part of east Indonesia you otherwise may never get to see. ● Spice Islands Tour from Ambon to Banda Neira, Indonesia, with Janet DeNeefe, from November 10-18. Nihi Sumba Island This extraordinary experience is on the list of every surfer with the dream of escaping the crowds in the water (the excellent surf break is reserved for guests). On the remote Nihi Sumba Island in south-eastern Indonesia – a 50-minute flight from Bali – the various styles of villas are set right on the famous left-hand wave, known locally as “Occy’s left” after the Australian former world champion Mark Occhilupo. It’s a piece of coast with a reputation as one of the best left-hand breaks in the world. But the wave has been described as “double overhead on an average day”, so it’s not for beginners,
Bali To the more than one million Australians who visit Bali each year, there’s some news – there’s a new kid in town. It’s Malaysian full-service carrier Malindo Air, and I experienced the first flight on the new MelbourneDenpasar route on June 8. Malindo Air has taken up the route vacated last year by Tigerair, and will offer strong competition to Jetstar. We landed happily in Denpasar to access a list of hot Bali entertainment options; some new
although a surfer friend has told me “regular” surfers can usually find a wave that’s not too challenging. Nihi Sumba is more than a luxury resort, it’s a “culturally immersive enclave” encompassing active adventure, “barefoot luxury”, superb food from their own gardens and a beach club. Activities include fishing, horse riding, yoga and wellness, a spa and kids’ activities. Some villas are close enough to the beach that you can check the surf break from your bed. The “Kasambi” villa is the one you might consider – it overlooks the wave and is regarded as the surfer’s “villa dream”. ● Nihi Sumba ● nihi.com
and some older favourites. Try Bikini restaurant, the next venture of Melbourne-born restaurateur Adam McAsey, who opened the everreliable Sisterfields cafe (next door) in 2014. The two share a courtyard dining space. Another ex-Melburnian Maurice Terzini has Da Maria (pictured), a fun and funky modern Italian, part-osteria, part-pizzeria, part-bar, that features a DJ each night after 10.30. Da Maria is a collaboration with Sydneysider Adrian Reed, who has the party-time diner Motel Mexicola.
Finally, I get to fill an embarrassing gap in my visits to the world’s great cities – by experiencing Hong Kong. All those endless images of stunning cityscapes towering over Victoria Harbour have to be seen for yourself. The new Murray Hotel in Central is the perfect Hong Kong kick-off spot. With its deluxe rooms and ideal location (between Garden Road and Cotton Tree Drive), the Murray has been transformed from an office building into a luxury destination. We move at a fair clip through the best of Hong Kong. Lunch at Mott 32, a contemporary Chinese restaurant in Central, is in that category, as is Ho Lee Fook, a more casual funky Chinese kitchen. Access the views of Hong Kong through rooftop bar Sevva (10 Chater Road). Take a trip on one of the last remaining traditional Chinese junks and watch A Symphony of Lights, the multimedia show that dazzles the harbour every night. We are taken on a tour of Sham Shui Po on the Kowloon side, one of the earliest developed areas in Hong Kong and now an emerging neighbourhood where modern cafes sit alongside traditional eateries and

Bali in the ’80s was a party island but has evolved into serious culinary destination, and Terzini’s new place has developed a strong following. Still abuzz is Saigon Street (in Petitenget) serving delicious casual Vietnamese and a visit to Mama San in nearby Kerobokan is imperative. ●

often, we’d all be in our own bedrooms talking via text. Snobbery was taking place inside our own home, let alone the driveway. Then I moved northside. The hippies, arts students and nonnas are no different, it seems. A few years in an apartment block and nothing but a few classic awkward elevator ice-breakers – “Level three? Thanks” or “It’s really coming down out there” or “Cute dog.” The building was evacuated once. Even at 4am – with hundreds of us scattered across gutters in our pyjamas – not a word was said. My boyfriend Cody (he’s really hot – stop mentioning it) and I have just moved again. Still northside but

ello there. I’m Nath Valvo – I’ve lived in Melbourne since birth and I tell jokes for a living. Saying hello to you – a stranger – isn’t something I do often. I don’t think many of us do. Question: Are Melburnians snobs? Maybe snob is too strong a word, but I can’t help but notice a huge bunch of us would hate nothing more than small talk with another human being, especially our neighbours. Tad depressing, yes? In my early 20s I lived southside. Five years in St Kilda without a word to a neighbour. I didn’t even talk to my housemates (found ’em on the internet). The three of us would communicate in a WhatsApp group –
a new street and new neighbours. It’s been a month and not a single friendly word from anyone. If this were a movie, we’d have received a welcome basket from a gossipy neighbour. Sadly, we’re still waiting. Someone left a note on my windscreen last week, saying: “You park like a dickhead”. Does this count as a chat? Sitcoms have taught us that next-door neighbours should be hilarious characters – popping their head over the fence with some great zingers. In reality, you’re lucky to get a g’day on bin night. Hearing a knock on my door is so rare these days, my initial instinct would be to hide. “Why is someone knocking on the door?” “Is someone on fire?” “I haven’t ordered Uber Eats. Quick, Cody. Hide!” Maybe I’m completely wrong and your street is full of hilarious chats and cupcakes on doorsteps. But in my street no one is talking to anyone, which is fine with me. OMG, am I a snob? ●

Dream believer T
racy Grimshaw will never forget the day in 1981 she walked into the Channel 9 newsroom in Bendigo Street, Richmond, surrounded by people such as Brian Naylor, who she had always looked up to. She grew up watching “the box in corner”, and she was starting a dream job as a television reporter, in what was a male-dominated world. The name Grimshaw was on the staff roster, and many of the other journalists at the time just presumed it was a man. But there was one man who welcomed her with open arms, and she will always be grateful for it. “I knew nothing,” Grimshaw says. “I had done a fast-track cadetship in a suburban newspaper in two years, and I was ill equipped to start in the top-rating news station in the city. But Peter Hitchener walked up to me, and said ‘hello, you must be new here’, and I said ‘Yes, my name is
Tracy’ and he introduced himself and said welcome. “He had no idea who I was. He made my life, let alone my day, that day. He is as warm now as he was to me that day, that’s just who he is,” Grimshaw says. Fast forward almost 40 years and both Grimshaw and Hitchener are a force for Channel 9 Melbourne in that all-important 6-7.30pm primetime slot. Grimshaw’s A Current Affair is an underrated ratings juggernaut, rarely out of the top-10 nationally rated television shows since she started as host in 2006. She has had a long, successful career, starting as news reporter, later newsreader, to hosting Today for 10 years until 2006, first with Steve Liebmann and Karl Stefanovic for one year, and now ACA. There is one blip – in 1995 she hosted Midday with David Reyne, with no TV band and a reduced budget, after the heady days before her when Ray Martin was host. The job lasted nine months. “That wasn’t a stellar moment in my career, but it taught me to work with a live audience,” she says. Now, Grimshaw has her first, and well-overdue, TV Week gold Logie nomination. She will be up against Love Child and The Wrong Girl actress Jessica Marais, host of the now-axed Family Feud Grant Denyer, Andrew Winter of Selling Houses Australia, Amanda Keller of The Living Room and Rodger Corser of Doctor Doctor Doctor. The Logies ceremony will be held at the Gold Coast on July 1. Channel 9 campaigned hard for

her to be nominated. “I was absolutely gobsmacked,” she says. “I didn’t know the network was going to do that campaign for me. I have been with the one network for 37 years, and I am not exaggerating when I say it has a family feel to it. I have been offered jobs at other networks ... but Nine make it easy to stay.” A Current Affair is also up for the most outstanding news coverage or public affairs Logie for her interview with Don Burke, the night that Fairfax Media and ABC broke the story about his bullying and sexualmisconduct allegations. “I am still loving it,” she says.
““A A Current Affair still presents me with a challenge; every new interview is a challenge, and every person and story are different.” Born and bred in Melbourne, Grimshaw now calls Sydney home – where ACA is filmed. Outside work, she treasures her dogs and horses. “The horses and dogs don’t give a rat’s ass what I do all day; the expectations are pretty simple and I do like that simplicity when I come home,” she says. ● TV WEEK LOGIES \ Live voting for gold/most popular categories reopens June 29 and closes at the end of Nine’s red-carpet telecast.

Buttered up You can tell a lot about a restaurant by its bread and butter. At Congress, thick rye and whole-wheat slices come with whipped malt butter creamy enough to pass as dessert. On the ground floor of the Peel by Milieu apartment block, this restaurant project isn’t a developer’s afterthought – it’s a destination. We sit on the mezzanine level, where undulating timber panels lead to floor-toceiling glass. The interior is punctuated by concrete columns, geometric latticed brick outside the windows affords designer privacy. When we visit the menu is a best-of autumn affair: singed Brussels sprouts with nutty sunflower tahini; confit potato on jammy smoked onion beneath flakes of pancetta and horseradish; al dente pappardelle folded with pine mushrooms. Barely pink seared duck livers arrive on barley cooked in beer, and our astute waitress recommends wine from a noteworthy list. She also warns us to lean forward before biting into the two white bread circles of an extra juicy, a la mode pig’s head sandwich. ● ● Congress ● 49 Peel Street, Collingwood ● 9068 7464 ● congresswine.com.au BEST FOR \ A classy date (try the $58pp menu) or multiple pig’s head sangas with a bottle of wine. ●

South Melbourne’s reputation as wine-buff central just got stronger with the recent opening of Magnum + Queens Wine Store. The Coventry Street store is owned by Virginia Selleck and Kirsten Dickie, two professionals who started Magnum + Queens online about a year ago but realised they missed direct interaction with their customers. “It’s great that people can come in and see us, talk with us and taste some wine while they’re here,” says Selleck. “The store also allowed us to extend our range, both with the wines we were already selling and with the beer and spirit lines we’re now stocking.” Selleck has developed an affinity for small wine producers, which is reflected in the 600-plus wines that are on the M + Q shelves. “It’s great to be able to stock many of the producers that I love from all over the world,” she says. M + Q has labels from Europe, New Zealand, the US as well as local stuff. There’s beautifully made Bric A Brac Syrah from the Rhone Valley, a German Pinot Noir from Bernhard Huber and a great selection of quality New Zealand Pinot Noir. The best news for those wanting to spend time in the tranquil, clean-lined store, with its central communal tasting table and gorgeous artwork by photographer Andy Vukosav, is that M + Q will soon have a licence to serve wine in-store. ●

aybe it’s the wall of fine wines, but don’t be surprised if a boozy brekkie is suddenly on the cards at Marion. Mimosas clink festively at one table, bloody marys at another. Me? I order a cheeky sparkling to have with my bagel. “Happy anniversary,” we say, and suddenly brunch is a celebration, the day full of promise. Cutler and Co’s sexy bar-next-door is nearly three years old, and it’s still a firm fave on the morning circuit. It’s posh, but not. Luxe and welcoming, with enough options for all brunch situations: coffee with parents, a first-date hook-up, or a poke around Gertrude Street shops warm-up. Big windows flood the space with morning light, fresh water arrives, topped by waiters who know hospitality is more than a way to get through uni, and the curved copper counter is decked with pastries and native flora. Order a Lune croissant pronto, before it sells out.
HARVARD WANG
Here’s cheers
Tap it gently with your knife and – hear that crack? That’s the sound of Australia’s best croissant (no joke). Pull it apart, and the lustrous, featherlight, buttery curls flake on the plate. There’s rhubarb jam and cultured butter to add if you like, or have it with ham and comte. Fleshy ocean trout, house-cured in a classic Nordic gravlax of sugar, salt and dill, tops a jumbo sesame-crusted bagel. Purists, take note: this one is baked, not boiled. It’s a lighter texture, still with a chewy crust – ask for a steak knife, it’s hard to cut – spread thickly with cream cheese, a pretty layer of cucumber and a zesting of horseradish. If you’re a touch on the shabby side, it’s the Maz muffin you’d be wanting, a drippy, juicy skinless sausage with melty cheese, fried egg and sweet, jammy relish, a morning-after cure created by exhead chef Josh Fry. Thanks, Josh; top work.
Don’t go thinking you’ll try one of these on Wednesday though. Brunch is a strictly weekend affair at Marion, with last orders by 11.30am. Good news is you can book a table, avoiding any bad queue juju. You’ll be well looked after at Marion, making it an easy slide into the day. Cheers to that. ●

Latte like a local
I
f you’re after that ‘‘barista-knows-my-first-nameand-daily-coffee-order’’ feeling, then you need Fitzroy North, which is nestled nicely along tram route 86. In a morning of cafe-hopping I’ve seen more welcoming nods to regulars than I’ve seen people instagramming their breakfasts. Rather than for the show, locals come here for the meals, company and the newspaper, even on a Monday. The pile next to a tray of freshly baked muffins at The Bell Jar look well read, and the daily muffin special (pear and white chocolate today) looks equally enticing. I say I’m snagging one for the road, but it’s really just for the meander up Queens Parade. Had I not had coffee on my mind, one of their house-made turmeric spice blends would’ve made a nice accompanying latte. Behind the quaint Victorian buildings of Fitzroy

North/Clifton Hill, there are shops dedicated to their crafts. There’s handmade Turkish rugs at Alaturca Collections, even clothing being carefully made behind the counter at Keegan. It’s all about the small and unique touches, including knowing costumers by name; while floating in and out of stores, shoppers are greeted warmly. Fowlers Flowers, and cafe Mixed Business make for a friendly duo: buy a $25 seasonal posy followed by a coffee next door with “Tim Tammy” flavour notes. The hubbub of community here is loud and welcoming, so it’s easy to forget the wide main road running through the middle of the street. It feels like a merry slice of the old times. I order a simple latte in a punt to become a new local, and perhaps a casual read of the newspaper while I wait will seal the deal. ●

TRAVEL \ L AUNCESTON
A day Only a 55-minute flight from Melbourne, Launceston, in Tasmania’s north, has many hidden gems to explore. A few minutes’ stroll from the city centre, the Cataract Gorge is a unique natural formation hiding from view. With a restaurant, swimming pool, rolling lawns and a chairlift spanning 457 metres over the massive river basin – and majestic peacocks and friendly wallabies milling around at dusk – it is a must-experience destination. On the walk back into town along the South Esk River drop into Seaport for lunch and experience some of Tasmania’s freshest fish and chips, then wind up with a tour of James Boag Brewery (book ahead), which has been running since 1881.
A weekend With 30 vineyards dotting the Tamar Valley Wine Route, the only question is – how many can you fit in? This cool-climate wine region produces some of the world’s finest French-style sparklings and Pinot Noirs. You can drive or try the Tamar Valley winery tours if you prefer to sit back and enjoy someone else doing the work. For the adventurous, only 20 minutes from Launceston is the Hollybank Treetops Adventure, and a three-hour zip-line tour of the canopy.

Launceston, Cradle Mountain and the West Coast is certainly the least-visited corner of Tasmania.
Scenic views and wild country such as this can only be experienced on the wild west coast of Tasmania. Crank up the car’s heater – it’s time for a mountain road trip. Following the Cradle to Coast Tasting Trail from Launceston, expect to pull over more than once to indulge in local fare – Christmas Hills Raspberry Farm in Elizabeth Town has seasonal offerings, while Ashgrove Cheese black pepper and red chilli-infused cheeses will warm up the day.
Enjoy a pretty drive through the country towards the airport via Mole Creek. If you have time, stop and embark on a cave and glow-worm tour. Round up your trip with a visit to an awardwinning winery Josef Chromy Wines, not far from the airport. With views out across the lake it’s an enjoyable way to relax before departure. ●

s our love affair with mid-century design continues to grow, it’s easy to see why the Featherston name fascinates us. While collectors hunt for sculptural chairs at auctions, some Featherston designs are still made today. After all, Grant and his partner Mary always looked to the future. Think of the space-age Talking chairs – one in English and one in French – that they designed for the ’67 Montreal Expo. “There’s a little element of nostalgia for people in the 21st century looking back to 1950s and ’60s as a simpler era where life was simpler and houses were smaller but they were functional, efficient and stylish,” says curator Kirsty Grant. An exhibition at Heide Museum of Modern Art will feature key Featherston objects and archives. “There’s a timelessness to Featherston design – it’s aesthetically very beautiful,” explains Grant, who is curating the show with Denise Whitehouse. One of the most exciting discoveries was modular furniture – including a sideboard and cabinet – that has never been seen in public. The curators tracked down the items – a house-warming gift in the ’50s – to a family home in Melbourne. A new generation is now rediscovering the Featherston creations, the curator says. Some iconic chair designs are back in production after being relaunched two years ago under licence by Gordon Mather Industries. The story began in 1945 when Featherston started to work as a self-taught designer after returning from World War II. As Australians embraced all things modern in the ’50s, he became a household name with iconic designs such as the webbed Relaxation chair and the plywood Contour chair. In the mid-’60s, he married Mary, who had graduated from RMIT, and they formed a design partnership, collaborating on many projects including the Talking chair and the Obo chair. In 1988, the NGV held a retrospective show of Featherston work. After Featherston died in 1995, his wife focused on designing educational environments. The Heide exhibition is a long-awaited look at the Featherston legacy. Included will be original drawings and photos of interior design projects and a short film about Mary’s educational work. “There was an aesthetic excellence and technical excellence that they strove for in their work. That’s why it’s still so appealing today,” Grant says. ●

SAM WOOD \ FITNESS
The age of reason REMAINING HEALTHY IS RELATIVE TO ALL STAGES OF LIFE
As a 38-year-old, for me it’s now about training smarter,
I
often see clients who were once in amazing shape but, as they have aged, they quickly realise that doing what they have always done isn’t enough to stay as lean and healthy. This all comes down to a little thing I call “the sneak-up factor”. As a general rule, this talks about your metabolism slowing down about one per cent each year from your 30th birthday. Sounds scary, right? Never fear; I’m still a firm believer that when it comes to weight loss, your age shouldn’t define your success. I have witnessed first hand from the thousands of success stories on my program that weight loss can happen at any age, and one thing I’ve learnt is that some factors will benefit some age groups over
others. As a 38-year-old, for me it’s now about training smarter, not harder and being far more educated when it comes to what I put in my mouth. So, with that in mind, here are a few tips that I’ve learnt from my 28ers of all ages on my program.
not harder ...
GEN Y \ Ah, millennials. Whether it’s work, kids or
both, this is a flat-out time in life, where you often feel like there’s barely a second for yourself. Weight gain is common in these years, with less opportunity to exercise and a tendency to reach for convenience food. My advice is to ensure you are getting the right balance of complex carbs, fats, protein and veggies by preparing meals and becoming friends with the freezer for when you’re especially time poor.

When it comes to training, I always tell my busy Gen Y clients to focus on shorter, intense workouts rather than focusing on volume – and home workouts are a great way to do this (particularly if you have kids). Think about including incidental exercise into your routine, like walking to work rather than driving and taking your meetings on foot. GEN X \ For the Gen Xers out there, your peak bone mass will have begun to decrease so you need to make vitamin D and calcium a priority. Think about getting these from a variety of food sources, other than just dairy products, and get your vitamin D from some good old-fashioned sunshine. Including strength training in your routine will maximise these nutritional intakes, so I’m always telling my Gen X clients to mix it up with anything
from Pilates to yoga, to strength training at home or in the gym. As I always say: don’t resist the resistance. BABY BOOMERS \ The bad news for Baby Boomers
is, with a slower metabolism you may need to slightly reduce your overall food intake. The good news? With, hopefully, a bit more time on your hands, you will have plenty of opportunities to be active. I believe that staying active in this phase of your life is an absolute necessity and when we do this we can kick back with a nice glass of red to celebrate, because God only knows we’ve earnt it. When it comes to nutrition, just keep up the vitamin D and calcium for bone strengthening and make sure you’re eating nutrient-dense food. ● ● 28bysamwood.com

FEATURE HOUSE SANDRINGHAM \ 36 KEATS STREET 5

K
eats Street, a stately avenue, deserves a bit of pillaging from the works of its poet namesake. Here’s Endymion: “A thing of beauty is a joy forever; its loveliness increases …” Perhaps the owners of this house took these words to heart in 2004, when they completed their new home. Built on two levels, with a central hall flowing down to a living area and out to a poolside patio, the house was planned for a boisterous family; it had to be sturdy. Bring on the hardwood floorboards. However, the delight is in the details that grubby hands can’t reach. Coffered ceilings. The deluxe spa en suite. Even the facade, its gables tipped with tiny steeples, suggests a loftiness that rises above the mundane. Five bedrooms – two upstairs, three below – make this Sandy’s gift to big families. But the clincher is likely to be the fantastic communal areas. As well as the main living/ dining area, there’s a lounge or games room, a home office and a huge first-floor retreat with attic access. Left of the hall, the carpeted lounge has a gas log fireplace and french doors to the front courtyard. One door along, a side hall leads to two double bedrooms and a porcelain bathroom with a tub, shower and twin basins. Down the hall, the enormous laundry has garden access. Behind yet another door is the staircase; it’s as if no visitor has to know there’s an upstairs. The office beyond has a store room. Hike up to the vaulted retreat, powder room and two double bedrooms. The ground-floor main bedroom has a dressing room with his’n’hers wardrobes, and an en suite with a corner spa and a shower. Sociable families will love the hardwood-floored living area, where a party can spill onto the sandstone patio. Bench seats flank the Heat & Glo gas log fireplace. The kitchen, airy and spacious, has Corian benchtops and island and Miele appliances, including a 900-millimetre gas cooktop and oven. The garden has a lawn with cubby and swings and, of course, the saltwater-chlorinated pool, whose waterfall keeps “pouring unto us from the heaven’s brink”, as John Keats might say. ● ALISON BARCLAY property@domain.com.au
