Help sought for new effort to rehabilitate Western Cemetery Executive
Portland Charter Commission Update
By Peter Monro Volunteers are being sought to bolster a new effort now under way to conserve and enhance Western Cemetery in collaboration with the City of Portland and its new Cemetery Superintendent, Mike Ciamaga. You could help by learning how to clean, repair, and re-set gravestones, many of which in the Western Cemetery are derelict or vandalized. You could help with social media or tours of this public burial ground, the second oldest in the city. Also sought is someone with a metal detector willing to walk the cemetery before any probing or digging begins. A revived Stewards of the Western Cemetery consisting of volunteers from the West End and Western Prom neighborhoods are leading these efforts on behalf of the twelve-acre cemetery located between Vaughan Street and the Western Promenade. Anyone with an interest in helping please contact StewardsWesternCemetery@gmail.com.
At 3.pm. Saturday, May 7th, Peter Monro of May Street, the Stewards’ clerk, will lead a 75-minute walk entitled, “The Past, Present and Future of Portland’s Western Cemetery.” Rehabilitation plans will be discussed and questions answered.
By Tony Zeli The Portland Charter Commissioners continued to meet weekly as they pushed to provide a preliminary report to City Council on May 9th. Among their groundbreaking recommendations is a new form of city government with a chief executive mayor and legislative city council.

Upcoming Events Two upcoming events are expected to launch this revival of interest.
Mayor & School Budget
The second event will occur in the week of July 4th. A professional conservator, Joe Ferrannini of Hoosick Falls, New York, the owner of Grave Stone Matters, will start repairs to dilapidated stones. He will work with volunteers at Western Cemetery on Thursday through Saturday, July 7th to 9th. The two previous days he will be repairing stones in Portland’s Eastern Cemetery, where volunteers have been carrying out gravestone repairs for more than ten years.
Conservation Efforts
Monro and the Stewards treasurer, Sam Wilson of Spring Street, spent much of last summer and fall learning to clean and conserve gravestones from conservators with Spirits Alive, the group overseeing the Eastern Cemetery. Along with other transformative proposals like creating more, smaller city council districts, municipal clean elections, and universal residential voting rights, the commission is poised to recommend a new branch of city government: the executive mayor. A compromised model was debated and amended over the course of several public meetings held virtually in April. A slim margin of seven to five votes moved the compromise system forward.

New Program to Strengthen Maine’s Healthcare Workforce A new $21 million program, Healthcare Training for ME, expands availability of free and low-cost career training for health care workers and employers Governor Janet Mills launched Healthcare Training for ME, an initiative of the Maine Jobs and Recovery Plan to strengthen Maine’s healthcare workforce by expanding availability of free and low-cost career training to help healthcare workers advance their careers, support workforce training needs of healthcare employers, and attract new workers to fast-growing fields. Through the new Healthcare Training for ME website, individuals and employers can connect with training from employers and education partners, such as adult education programs, community colleges, and the university system. Individuals and employers may then apply to receive tuition assistance to enroll in training programs, or offer training to their employees, at little or no cost.

By working directly with health care employers across fields such as longterm care, emergency services, hospitals, behavioral health, and dental, Healthcare Training for ME aims to improve workforce training and retention rates.
For current health care workers, the program offers free or low-cost pathways to new skills and advanced credentials, particularly through shorter-term training options. PCM Exec. Director Maine Crafts Assoc. Jean Murachanian Exec. Director Retires Sadie Bliss Resigns The Portland Conservatory of Music announces the retirement of its Executive Director Jean Murachanian, Ph.D. and its search for a new Executive Director. Murachanian will retire this summer after nearly seven years. Under Murachanians leadership, the Portland Conservatory of Music achieved many significant milestones. The Conservatory is now debt free, working to build a larger endowment, added several new programs, continues to see an increase in its enrollment, and has finally found its own, permanent home in Portland’s historic West End.
The Maine Crafts Association and Shop Maine Craft Board of Directors announce that Sadie Bliss, Executive Director of both organizations, will resign from the joint role. Sadie joined the Maine Crafts Association staff in 2009 and has served as Executive Director since 2012. During Sadie’s time as the director of Maine Crafts Association, she nurtured the Center for Maine Craft and Maine Craft Artist Awards from their early days and carried on the organization’s longest-running program, the Weekend Workshop @ Haystack Mountain School of Crafts.
Under her leadership, the organization’s impact and engagement grew with now established programs such as Maine Craft Weekend, a statewide event celebrating ten years this year, as well as the Craft Apprentice Program, the Portland Fine Craft Show, STITCH Fashion Show, the Webshop, East End Vend, Seconds & Supplies Sale, mentor booth programs at Craft Boston & New England Made, and the Maine Craft Content Project. Sadie envisioned and opened the organization's second fine craft gallery, Maine Craft Portland in 2018. Murchanian said, “The Conservatory is now perfectly poised to thrive and make a more meaningful impact in music education and performance in Southern Maine. While a lot has been accomplished, there is still much to do in order to take advantage of the new opportunities afforded by our building. As such, we’ve been exploring offering a traditional music program, partnering with Parks and Rec to provide after school lessons and starting a World Music Concert Series… I’m excited to see what lies ahead for PCM.”

CLINE VIOGNIER, North Coast, California, 2020, $12.00
Following our deep dive into the world of unattainable unicorn wines last month, I thought we could relax and get a bit more real. These are the wines you can have on the deck without the agony of making that breathless call to the bank or enduring the shock of your shrinking checking account balance showing up on your phone. There are a lot of them around, and today we will raise our glasses and drink a few.
When you get tired of over-the-top, oak centric California Chardonnays for Maison Tuesday night, you might switch it up to Barboulot a refreshing Cline Viognier. Modern technology, the kiddos graduating from wine schools, and the planting of international grape varieties have made these wines classic Tuesday night faves.

This is minerality as refreshment. Macon is the region, and the name after the dash refers to one of its forty-plus little surrounding villages that are all similar in flavor and style. They are aged in stainless steel and bottled for immediate consumption. You can’t replicate this limestone region/grape confluence. Hence the sometimes-scarce availability. The problem with Burgundy, other than being small, is that the land is divided up among the siblings. Little pieces become smaller little pieces. Sorry Tuscany, you lose, and must wait about 500 years for those tourists to swoon. With the fall of the Roman empire the region reverted to forgotten, and to rustic, with the local grapes falling into total obscurity. Enter Antonio Mastroberardino from a noble winemaking family endowed with an abundance of historical curiosity. He rescued the vines from oblivion in the 1940’s and, as they say, the rest is history. His family obtained permission from the Pompeii Historical Park people to plant a vineyard and make a “Pompeii Reserva” wine. First vintage since the Romans left town.

We’re All in This Together
Our Part in Preventing Catastrophic Change from Climate Chaos By Justin Beth The data is irrefutable. We are experiencing changes in climate that not only threaten the lives of future generations, but also life in all forms on our planet. Let’s not debate if climate change is happening, because we all know it’s true. We each have our own data on this. Instead, let’s talk about what each of us can do to protect people and our planet from this threat.

Even though we haven’t been successful in electing Greens to pass this important legislation, we luckily have groups like the Citizens Climate Lobby that are helping to get the Energy Innovation & Carbon Dividend Act passed through congress.

I’ve been living at The Park Danforth for several years now. It has always been my preference to support co-ops and non-profit organizations, so The Park Danforth being a non-profit really appealed to me. The people here give themselves in real ways that not everyone is even aware of, to the point that I get emotional even talking about it - neighbors helping neighbors, friends supporting friends. There is an authentic sense of community here that I appreciate very much. It is easy to see why The Park Danforth is the local choice and has been my choice.
