Macomb welcomes new expansion efforts
By Devon Greene editor-in-chief
Completely new and more familiar businesses are coming to Macomb in the coming weeks and months. The store coming first is the new Dollar General location opening on 212 East Calhoun St. where Family Video used to reside before they were forced to close their doors last summer. Family Video announced its closure near the end of June, and two weeks later, their doors were shut permanently. Dollar General remodeled the store quickly and had a soft opening on Aug. 28 and will have their more formal grand opening on Sept. 14. According to Macomb Mayor Mike Inman, they plan to keep both Dollar General locations open in Macomb. “I’m grateful to have them in the community and I’m grateful for their expansion,” Inman said. “Our long term vision for the downtown has been and continues to be a mix of retail spaces on the main floor of our downtown buildings and then a residential component on the second floor.” A newer business making its way to Macomb is Los Charros. Los Charros has four locations across Illinois in Carthage, Rushville and Aledo. It is a family owned business and is taking the place of El Rancherito that closed down last year due to multiple health code violations. Los Charros is still undergoing interior and exterior renovations, but they plan to open very soon. “The indication I had speaking to the manager last Friday is that they anticipated being open sometime in the second or third week in September.” Inman said. Lastly, with the announcement of a second Starbucks location coming to Macomb, anticipation was high last April, as members of the community waited for the popular coffee shop. However, there is still no sign of Starbucks in the old Ponderosa building and signs for lease are up outside. According to Inman, there is no need to worry.
“Their original timeline has always been to open around the end of the calendar year, so I don't know that that is out of the ballpark of reality. This is a corporate owned store, it’s not a franchise so the corporation is making the decisions.” As far as the lease sign that sits outside of the building goes, Inman has a simple explanation. “The property itself is for sale. We had plans for review and approval, we completed that about two weeks ago,” Inman said. “That particular building is going to be subdivided into three businesses, Starbucks will be taking the third. It is my understanding that the owner has a commitment from a second tennant and is still looking for the third.”

For more information on the week and rules you can check out wiu.edu/UUB. “Western has 117 years of tradition, but none compared to homecoming,” Brown said. “Being able to welcome home the countless alumni who will be in Macomb is remarkable. Seeing our current students, alumni and Macomb community come together shows how strong the Western bond is.”

Does Andrew Yang have a chance in 2020? On Sept. 12, 10 of the 20 eligible candidates running for president in the Democratic Party will get the opportunity to be a part of the two hour long debate. In order to qualify for this debate, compared to the previous two years, a candidate has to reach a threshold of at least 130,000 unique donors and reach at least 2 percent in at least four different polls approved by the Democratic National Committee. However, one candidate who may come as a surprise to even having enough support to qualify for the debate is Andrew Yang. In the first debate, Yang had one of the lowest speaking
times of any candidate at nearly three min even sparking concerns of whether his microphone was working properly the first time. But, Yang has impressively been able to establish a “cult” following called the "Yang Gang" and has created a slogan called MATH (MAKE AMERICA THINK HARDER). In the past several weeks, Yang has been polling between 2 and 4 percent, even beating out more recognizable candidates like Beto O’Rourke. But why is that? It’s very simple: he’s not a politician. Yang is an entrepreneur with no political or military experience and while many people,
including myself, originally cast him aside from the beginning, Yang seems to be gaining considerable support among voters in particular to his main policy proposal called the “Freedom Dividend.” This proposal is universal basic income where the federal government would give every American $1,000 (excluding those who get Social Security) every month for as long as they live. Now, when I first heard this proposal, I pretty much scoffed at the idea, but to my surprise, this proposal was actually almost enacted into law by Congress in the 1970s and even Alaska has its own system called the Permanent Fund Dividend, which since the 1980s has given more than $1,000 to every Alaskan due part to the excess mineral resources the state has. So, this idea of universal basic income isn’t as far-fetched as I thought.
Why do I think Yang has a chance? The same reason a lot of people thought Donald Trump didn’t have a chance. Yang is an outsider appealing to people not on the basis of immigration being the reason jobs are becoming scarce, but the notion that automation and machines will easily one day take over basic jobs humans have always held. Aside from that, Yang’s campaign is very much a grass roots one with his own supporters dubbing themselves the "Yang Gang." To top it all off, Yang just received a major endorsement from Tesla & SpaceX CEO Elon Musk. With Donald Trump as President, the thought of electing another businessman doesn’t seem unthinkable, but the true question is: is Andrew Yang the right candidate for 2020 to even be competitive against Trump? I guess we’ll just have to wait and see.
Being a broke college student is nothing to joke about Why is everyone so comfortable with joking about “broke college students?” In my personal opinion, it is an epidemic that should not be joked about. In fact, I think everyone should be taking it seriously and trying to find a way to put an end to it. My first few years of college, I had no issue finding a job and I always had money to do the things I wanted. Lately, though, I have applied to so many places with no luck. So, how do we figure out what to do when we have tried everything we can? I have a few
ideas, but until society starts seeing this as an issue, these ideas will be null. First, I think we need to look at the bigger picture: college tuition costs. Second, we should consider the amount of job opportunities in college towns. Lastly, we should think about giving college students incentives for higher GPAs. All of these ideas should be considered when we try to tackle the student debt crisis that is crippling our generation. College tuition costs, as I am sure you know, are way too high for our current average
incomes. With every year, students go even further into debt with very few pay options that won't impact us negatively in the future. Our politicians really need to make this a top priority in the following years in order for any of us to stay out of deep debt that will eventually financially cripple all of us. Tuition costs should not be anywhere near as high as they are, because the people that have to pay it are not in a position to be able to. Most college students cannot have jobs due to how many hours they take for school, making it even more difficult to stay afloat. However, if you are anything like me, a job is necessary in order to live. When living on campus, not having a job is acceptable since everything you need is covered by your stu-
dent loans. When you move off campus in your upperclassman years, a job is important so you can pay your bills, get groceries etc. In my experience, it has been more difficult trying to find a job as a student, since most of my weekdays are spent in class. This causes issues with availability, leading to employers being less interested in you. So, how can I make myself more admirable to employers, when my availability is few and far between? I think it would help if companies took into consideration how many college students have different schedules of which they could take advantage. Employers could have many students working, making it easier to cover multiple shifts due to varying school schedules. Another option that could
help the student debt crisis is cash incentives for good GPAs. While this one is a bit far-fetched, I think it could be a big help in this situation. I believe this would help because it would give students a better reason to go to class and do well. An immediate incentive would help students see the positive impact school can have, leading to better scores, grades and GPAs. If all of these options were considered when discussing the debt crisis, I think we could come up with a solid plan to put an end to it for good. Student debt is a serious issue that is often looked over or joked about, but we need to figure out a way to stop it before a whole generation is crippled by debt.

IT: Chapter 2 captivates viewers The movie opens focused on the life of Mike Hanlon, who never left Derry, Maine like his friends did. Mike soon realizes that IT is back again and begins calling his friends that he has not heard from for decades. Viewers are dipped into the adult lives of the seven losers, getting a glimpse of what their now-adult lives are like, and some are more enjoyable than others. Upon receiving the call from Mike, all the Losers return to the town that none of them can seem to remember. All but one, that is. This movie follows the remaining six losers and their journey to battle Pennywise the Clown as well as many memories that they would rather have forgotten. Many Stephen King fans counted down the days until Sept. 6, anticipating the horrifying new chapter to the IT remakes. Though, “IT: Chapter 2” was far more than just another horror film with endless graphics and jump scares. While box office sales of “IT: Chapter 2” did not quite match those of its first film, it is still the “second-best horror opening of all time” with $91 million in sales in the U.S. alone, according to the Hollywood Reporter. While
the sales speak for themselves around the excitement and enjoyment of the film, the reviews are also primarily positive. According to a writer from the New York Post, “It: Chapter 2” is a very fine follow-up to the most successful h o r r o r film ever.” As an avid King fan and horror fan, I had to see “IT: Chapter 2” on opening w e e k e n d . Despite the 2 hour and 50-minute run time, the film was extremely enjoyable. The l o n g run-time was com- p l e t e l y justified for the e m o tional, suspenseful a n d horrific aspects of the film. I was caught off-guard b y the immense number of underlying message that the sequel was able to highlight, while remaining suspenseful and overall haunting. From the opening scene that had a powerful and painful message about hate, to the final battle between the losers and IT, there were underlying messages hidden in every corner. As director Andy Muschietti told Vanity Fair, “You can
Pennywise is sure to be a fan favorite costume this Halloween.
take it as an analogy: If you are separated, you’re more vulnerable, you’re more weak and you’re easier to conquer. You’re easier to be made submissive and scared. That’s exactly what Pennywise does, and that’s what’s going on. That’s what’s happening in this world right now.” I am normally not a fan of sequels to horror-films, but “IT: Chapter 2” is a wonderful follow-up to its first film, it is both chilling and tells a story about things that are relevant today. The biggest weakness of the film is the ending, which seems almost too good to be true, though that, too, is tied into the backstory of Bill Skarsgard. Bill, who grows up to be a successful writer, cannot write a good ending to save his life. Much like King, who is also often criticized for not ending his books well, pokes fun at himself through the character of Bill. Bringing the film full-circle, it is revealed to viewers at the end of the film that Bill is writing a book, and it is about his experience with the Losers Club in Derry, Maine. And thence, the film we are watching is created from the book that Bill wrote about the Losers Club, Pennywise, Derry and life. If you have not yet seen “It: Chapter 2,” I highly recommend going to see it. Do not let the long run time turn you away, as IT is one of the most successful horror sequels I have seen, and stays true where it should to the original 1990 film.

releases its third season 13 Reasons Why released its third season on Aug. 23, and the buzz about Liberty High School has returned. Since it’s first airing in 2017, 13 Reasons Why has received very controversial reviews and has started a nationwide discussion. Focusing on subjects such as suicide, abuse, drugs and bullying, 13 Reasons Why caught everyone off guard when it originally aired. Due to its heavy subject matter and the lack of a disclaimer in the first season, the beginning of the first episode
includes a warning for viewers about the content, sharing that some viewers may not want to watch alone. This new season has one primary focus: what happened to Bryce Walker? Initially in the season, Bryce is confirmed missing, but viewers soon find that he has been found dead, which was also indicated in the season’s trailer. This season is different from the others in that it is told from the perspective of a new student at Liberty High School, Ani, who is an on-looker
to the lives of all the characters that viewers have come to know and love (or hate). Another unique thing about this season is that it is not told in chronological order; there are a great deal of flashbacks and flash-forwards which leave the viewer in suspense the entire season, as pieces of the puzzle are put together. This season has received many mixed reviews from viewers, but ratings from critics such as Rotten Tomatoes have dropped 30 percent from the first season, leaving the third season of this drama at a whopping 6 percent. Rotten Tomatoes’ website states, “13 Reasons Why attempts to break away from its first two seasons only to become a melodramatic mess of a murder mystery.” Unfortunately, many fans
agree with this, and also have an uncanny dislike for the new girl, Ani. Comments on actress Grace Saif’s social media posts became so flooded with mean and negative comments that she had to delete the posts. While some fans may not have enjoyed this season or it’s new characters, others stand by 13 Reasons Why and love every minute of season three. Whether or not fans enjoyed the season, they all want to know the answer to the same question: who killed Bryce Walker? The trailer indicates that the prime suspect is Clay Jenson, the show’s male lead. But could Clay really commit such an act? It’s clear that his hatred for Bryce is strong, but Bryce also had many enemies.
So, is Clay really the one who murdered Bryce? Or is it someone less suspecting? You can find season three of 13 Reasons Why on Netflix now. Disclaimer: 13 Reasons Why does contain heavy material, and topics can be re-traumatizing to some survivors. Please know that both 13 Reasons Why and Western Illinois University Provides resources which one should seek if they need them. Streaming wars only hurt the viewers Over the past few years, more and more people have elected to cut their cable and satellite to save money, with alternatives like Netflix, Hulu and Amazon Prime. The problem with cable and satellite is that you can't get all the channels you want without paying a fortune. Streaming sites have been getting popular because for a small fee you can watch the shows you want to. But you might have noticed that more streaming services are popping up and each of those streaming services has tried to pick up the rights to different shows. Netflix has been hit hard with this, and will be losing the rights to shows like the Office to NBC's streaming service, and Friends to another streaming service. Amazon Prime is losing Doctor Who to HBO Max, and all Disney content (including Marvel, Star Wars, Indiana Jones and presumably some ABC shows) will be taken off Netflix and others (Hulu is now owned by Disney, so some content might be available) to make way for
the new Disney Plus. Disney Plus will have a bunch of exclusive tv-series and movies and include most of their library (Song of the South still missing, and some movies will be edited.) This all presents a new problem, to watch all your favorite shows you have to subscribe to a variety of streaming sites that range in price. I have five different streaming services, one of them is free (HBO GO is free to WIU Students). For me to be able to watch all the shows I want, I would have to subscribe to at least 10 different websites. It is starting to look like streaming is becoming packages, similar to cable. I saw a comment on Facebook a while back that pretty much said that if this continues to happen, there will be a rise in pirated content. I believe this 100 percent. Don't act all righteous, we have all watched an illegal stream or downloaded something on Youtube to put on our iPods. Why do we do this? We do it for a number of reasons. Money is a big one, because people don't want to
pay for a bunch of different services. For example, before the WWE Network became a thing, people would find random websites to find a PPV stream because they didn't want to pay $60 a month, with the Network it only costs $9.99 a month, so people are less inclined to do that. Availability is another huge reason, whether the shows are not available anywhere (no legal streaming, no DVDs or not on TV), only available in certain areas (foreign TV Shows/ Movies/Events, blacked-out sporting events, newscasts etc,) or you simply don't have a particular channel or are unable to get a signal, which some of us experienced during the Super Bowl earlier this year. My point is, there are going to be necessary times for doing this, but with less legal ways to do this, because of the price of all the streaming services and every country having their own copyrights on shows (You can watch Harry Potter on Japan's Hulu), it gets frustrating, and we as consumers will find a better way for us to get content. Unfortunately, that means more pirating. I don't blame streaming services for doing what they are doing, it's good business.

Traveling helps gain life experiences Traveling helps you grow up. Breaks are necessary to avoid burnouts. It is inevitable, regardless of what you do, a person gets tired of doing it constantly. This is why people have time off to go on vacation. Most of the time, any trips or vacations you end up on are with family because not only do they usually pay for the trip, you are too young to travel on your own as a kid. So, you have your “relax” time away from
any work turned into a family outing, and let’s face it, eventually you will get annoyed that you are stuck doing anything altogether. So let’s take the fact that we are adults now. When we are on break, within reason, our breaks are our time to do what we want, when we want. This is the time that friends get together and take trips. Although vacations don’t always serve as a means to unwind, they are also a great way to gain
some perspective on life. Most people stay in the same town, city or state for the majority of their lives. In life, you can only speak on the experiences you have and the ones that people share with you. So, gaining experiences from different places will help you become a more conscious person. Not doing this will shroud you from being able to share experiences with others. Traveling allows you to cast a wider net on the world, and traveling could be as small or big as you want. The bigger you go, the more diverse and different your experiences will be which is why it is always encouraged to travel overseas.
Being in college is a huge stepping stone. This is why so many people want to leave home for school to get that independence. Traveling, on the other hand, offers all of the things that going away to school does and more. On your trip, you decide when and what to do, which means you can be as active or lazy as you want. Once you get to your destination, you realize that you are surrounded by people and places you don’t know. Curiosity opens the door to spontaneous situations and activities that you may not have been able to do on your itinerary. When visiting places, you may run into someone of a different culture. ent that the things that people say and do on media outlets can be deceptive. If you are being deceived then you will lose the ability to think for yourself because the media will think for you. All media is not inherently bad, but doing your own research is important when discussing other people and cultures. If all goes well, you may even find something you enjoy and emulate from someone else’s culture. In the form of sociology, this is called cultural diffusion which is why we have sushi in America and Japan has baseball. Wherever you go, just experience what you can whenever you can.

What should’ve been an easy win, turned into a bad loss. The Huskies came into the matchup with a 0-2-1 record and were coming off a tough 3-0 loss to the Illinois State University Redbirds. Everything seemed to be aligned for Western to get another win at home and stay undefeated, but that’s not really how it went. Western started the game off well, stringing some passes together and having a majority of the possession early on, but it was NIU who had the most dangerous opportunities. Halfway through the first, a ball was crossed in, took a deflection off an NIU forward and bounced right off the crossbar and out. Western was pretty shaken up after that and the tides turned to NIU. The Huskies had another good opportunity to take the lead when another ball was crossed in and tipped along by a forward player. This time, the ball trickled in and went off the post. The half finished scoreless and NIU outshot Western 6-3, but the Leathernecks had two on net while the Huskies didn’t. Around the 60-minute mark is when NIU finally converted. Julia Neary picked up her first collegiate goal as she took a shot passed the diving Palmiero Herrera and into the back of the net. The goal stood to be the game winner. So, now Western sits at 2-2-1 and goes back on the road for two games. The road trip will begin Thursday when they travel to Milwaukee to take on the Panthers. They’ll finish the trip on Sunday against the Redbirds of ISU and return home Friday Sept. 20 to take on the Drake University Bulldogs. The game against the Panthers kicks off at 7 p.m. and 1 p.m. against ISU on Sunday. It’s a tough stretch for the Leathernecks coming up soon; let’s see if they can keep up. Twitter: bradjp08

Antonio Brown: The Man of Headlines
The most melodramatic person in the NFL just keeps lighting up the headlines. However, business keeps booming for the star wideout. He now finds himself suiting up for the defending Superbowl champions the New England Patriots. First, some background on this column. I am a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, that there is the reason that my
spite, anger, and ultimately fear is so abundant in this column. Antonio Brown signs with New England. Well that’s all folks. The best NFL team got the best receiver in the NFL and no one is shocked. This is always the game plan for this team. Win the Superbowl and get better. Always be the best and once again they will look to win it all.
As a Pittsburgh fan I find that this is just sickening. Steelers fans laughed from afar as AB seemed out of worry this year. Now they join our worst enemy that has bested us and the rest of the NFL for years. But is this even a surprise? New England is always looking for ways to improve and AB is just another asset for Tom Brady to use. Oh, and AB is not done making headlines just yet. Two more have surfaced over the last 24 hours. First it was a report that he hired a social media consultant to help his attempt to leave the Oakland
downs and a back-breaking interception that sealed the game for the Packers late in the fourth quarter. However, Trubisky wasn’t the only one to blame for the team’s laughable performance. Shaky play by the Bears’ offensive line and suspect play-calling by Nagy were just the icing on the cake. In 2018, Chicago’s offense averaged 29.2 rushing attempts per game (sixth-most in the league). Thursday night, Nagy opted to run the ball just 15 times (twice in the second half) in a game where his team trailed by just one point. And no, the clock was never an issue. Even more shockingly, Nagy decided to give veteran running back Mike Davis a team-high 11 touches out of the backfield while their shiny new toy in David Montgomery watched from the sidelines. Montgomery, who was selected with the Bears’ top pick in this past April’s draft, touched the ball just seven times, but he looked good in limited opportunity. After the conclusion of the game, nobody seemed quite as disappointed as the Bears’ starting quarterback himself, whose body language looked as if he’d just lost a close Super Bowl battle. “It's really frustrating because it's very uncharacteristic of this offense, especially the way we've been practicing. But the type of guys we've got in there, obviously we had our defense, special teams battled all night to keep us in it,” Trubisky said during the post-game press conference. “So we've just got to continue to pull together, look within ourselves and find answers to make sure we're not feeling
like this again.” Not every takeaway from the offense, however, was a negative. Perhaps the lone bright spot from their heartbreaking loss was wide receiver Allen Robinson, who signed a threeyear, $42 million contract with the team last offseason. Coming into his second season in the Windy City, Robinson started the year with a bang, toasting Packers’ cornerback Tony Brown the entire game on his way to seven receptions for 102 yards. Still just 26 years old, Robinson could prove that he’s still got his best football ahead of him as the season progresses. It must be remembered that he’s already got one 80-reception, 1,400-yard season under his belt as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2015. On the defensive side of things, Chicago’s menacing front seven picked up right where they left off in 2018, terrorizing Rodgers for five sacks. The Bears also surrendered only 10 points and 213 offensive yards, a remarkable feat for a team whose offense couldn’t stay on the field, picking up just nine first-downs in the first three quarters. Outside linebacker Leonard Floyd looked the part of an elite pass-rusher, finishing the game with two sacks of his own as he continues to develop in his fourth professional season. It appears that the term “regression” is non-existent in their vocabulary. However, at the end of the day, it’s only one game. While it was undoubtedly an ugly defeat, NFL teams play 16 regular-season games for a reason. After bouncing back to a tune of 12-3 following an opening-night loss to the Packers last season, they’ll look to do just that when the travel to Denver for a week two matchup versus their old defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
Raiders. In the timeline that we have been given, this means that AB moves quickly and had his mind made up a long time ago. Probably the moment there was a rumor they would take his $30 million in guaranteed money. That seemed to be the biggest problem for AB. The final headline is the worst. He liked a tweet that stated Mike Mayock should be raped. No one should ever go through that and if Antonio Brown thought it was funny, or just liked it to show some hostility it is wrong. It is behavior that violates his NFL contract and I
personally believe he should be fined for it. However, he is mad and angry with his former team who he never played a down for and it may have been a weak moment. Whoever you root for, know this. The Patriots are better. They have the best coach, the best quarterback and now the best wideout. They are always improving, never stop working and are more deadly than any other sports team you have seen. They are better than the rest and we should all marvel at their skill. I hate them with a passion, but god they're good.
Bears fall flat against the Packers
For any Chicago Bears fan, opening night against the Green Bay Packers wasn’t quite what anyone was expecting. After exceeding all expectations last season under new offensive-minded head coach Matt Nagy, finishing the season with a 12-4 record and arguably the top defense in the league, fans had their minds set on a Super Bowl run in 2019. That all started at Soldier Field last Thursday night against their division rivals out of Wisconsin, except it had quite a different outcome than many had envisioned. The Bears’ offense, which impressively finished as the ninth highest scoring offense in the league a season ago, never showed up. While the defense played their hearts out, holding two-time All-Pro quarterback Aaron Rodgers and company to just 10 points, the Monsters of the Midway couldn’t even find the endzone. Their only score of the entire game ended up being a 38-yard field goal. In a game where seemingly nothing could go right for Bears’ quarterback Mitchell Trubisky and his comrades, Chicago fell in defeat by a score of 10-3. For anyone who’s grown accustomed to watching high-scoring offensive slugfests that today’s NFL has grown into, it seemed that these two teams had turned back the clock. Trubisky, who many had pegged to take a big step forward this season in year two of Nagy’s system, was atrocious. The thirdyear signal caller out of the University of North Carolina finished the game completing just 26 of 45 passes (57 percent) with zero touch-

Football falls to 0-2 after tough 38-13 loss to FBS Colorado State
By Christopher Bean assistant sports editor
FORT COLLINS, Colo. — The Leathernecks of Western Illinois University traveled to Colorado this weekend to pull off the massive upset against FBS opponent the Rams of Colorado State University. However, it didn’t go as planned, as the Necks lost 38-13 to drop to 0-2. It only took 10 seconds for the Rams to reach the endzone. Quarterback Collin Hill found his target freshman Dante Wright over the outstretched arms of Jalen Powe for the 75-yard touchdown. After Western’s first drive stalled after a sack, the Leatherneck defense caused their first of two turnovers. Redshirt freshman Greg Benton Jr. caused the fumble and redshirt junior Demetri Royer fell on it at the CSU 25-yard line. Less than two minutes later, senior Nathan Erickson converted a 32-yard field goal to cut the lead to 7-3. But yet again, it didn’t take long for Colorado State to score. On 3rd and 12, Hill checked down to running back Marvin Kinsey Jr. and Kinsey Jr. did the rest, dodging a couple of tackles for the 77-yard score to make it 14-3. After an unsuccessful field goal attempt from CSU,
Western capitalized off another mistake and converted another field goal from Erickson, cutting the lead to eight. This time it was from 44-yards, a season high. Again, CSU answered Western’s field goal with a touchdown. However, it was a long and methodical 1l-play drive, capped off by a strong effort from EJ Scott who got a great push from his teammates after eight Leathernecks couldn’t take him down. After a three-and-out, the Rams had themselves another 3rd and 12 at the Western’s 14. Mills checked down to Kinsey Jr., and he did the rest again, making a guy miss to make it 28-6. With under five to go in the half, junior Mike Viti forced a fumble and teammate Zach Glisan picked it up for the second forced turnover on the day for the Necks. Viti was all over the filed, finishing with 11 tackles and one forced fumble. However, this time the Leathernecks could not capitalize, and the score remained the same going into half after the Rams failed to convert on a 61-yard field goal. Western had the ball to start the second half, and it was their most promising drive yet, until QB Connor Sampson got sacked on fourth down, killing anoth-
er promising Leatherneck drive. Sampson was sacked seven times on Saturday, and already 11 times through two games. The Rams converted their fifth touchdown thanks to short field position and missed tackling. Mills handed it off to Wright on the jet sweep, and Wright broke three missed tackles for his second touchdown of the day. After three quarters the Rams had a 35-6 lead. The first possession of the fourth quarter for the Rams gave them their largest lead of the game, thanks to a 41-yard field goal from Braxton Davis. However, the Necks finally scored a touchdown set up by Kendon Walker ’s 42-yard run. Capped off by Connor Sampson’s first throwing touchdown on the year under pressure to speedster Tony Tate with 5:52 in the game, making it 38-13. The score would remain the same the rest of the game giving the Rams their first win of the year. Western drops to 0-2 for the second straight year, but will come home for their home opener next weekend. For the second straight year, they will play Montana State, who defeated the Leathernecks 26-23 in week one of last year. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. next Saturday.

Women's soccer splits weekend double-header with UIC and NIU By Bradley Piros sports editor

MACOMB, Ill. – The Western Illinois women’s soccer team fell to 2-2-1 after two games since last Thursday. The team opened a two-game home stand Thursday with a 2-1 win against the University of Illinois-Chicago Flames but ended it with a 1-0 loss to the Northern Illinois University Huskies. The game against UIC last Thursday started a little slow for both teams and it wasn’t until the 37th minute that the deadlock was broken. It was the sophomore forward out of Birmingham, England who gave the Leathernecks the lead. Senior forward Emily Bollman assisted the goal as she placed a perfectly passed ball onto the right foot of Andrews who fired it into the bottom right corner to
make it 1-0. The Leathernecks took that lead into halftime, but it was UIC who came out the other side with all the momentum. In the 72nd minute Keri Birkenhead tied things up at 1-1 as she slotted the ball past a diving Ines Palmiero Herrera. Speaking of Palmiero Herrera, she made career save No. 192 in the win, moving her into fifth all-time in program history. She inched closer to that 200-save mark against NIU but didn’t quite reach it. She was interviewed after the game about the milestone by WIU Athletics Communications. “I'm so proud of this group of girls, I wouldn't be where I am without my team,” Palmiero Herrera said. “I'm going to keep working as hard as I can to keep helping the team achieve our season goals and help improve the program.” Continuing on with the UIC
game, it was far from over. It took a little over 12 minutes for the Leathernecks to regroup and find the back of the net again to take the lead. It was once again Andrews to the rescue. She once again received a perfect pass on the run as she beat a couple of defenders and then the keeper as she rocketed the ball upper-90 for the gamewinner. She celebrated the goal with a “sipping tea” celebration similar to Alex Morgan’s in the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup over the summer. The video of the goal and the celebration is on the team’s Twitter account: @WIUWomensSoccer. So, with all the momentum in the world the team took on NIU at home yesterday.
