Macomb Police find body of 24-year-old
Pictured above is the Chandler Blvd. residence where officers found a 24-year-old woman dead from a gunshot wound Friday.
By Steven Barnum news editor
Macomb Police are investigating the death of a 24-year-old woman who was found in a Chandler Blvd. residence. According to the media release from the Macomb Police Department, a neighbor first noticed a female walking around the property the night before and notified the owner. The owner then
had police officers conduct a walk-through search of the property, which is when they found that the woman died of a gunshot wound. The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Officers say that there was no sign of a forced entry to the residence and that there is no evidence that indicates criminal activity. The Macomb Police Department dispatched officers to the scene Friday at
8:31 a.m. The Illinois State Police and the Western Illinois University Office of Public Safety assisted them in investigating the scene. Spectators could notice a silver SUV parked on Murray Street that officers were searching. It is not confirmed that the vehicle belonged to a resident of the home. Crime scene tape remains up at the scene. More updates will be provided as the investigation continues.

Cindy Ridle will retire after 33 years at WIU By Karla Foster courier staff
Life at Western Illinois University can be one of the most amazing things that you can experience in your lifetime, according to Cindy Ridle. There is plenty to do such as: going to class (obviously), going to the student Union to get something to eat, visiting the student store and rocking out in some of Western’s fabulous merch, going to the gym and getting a good workout, but the biggest one is enjoying the many other clubs and activities that Western has to offer. Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end whether we like it or not here at the University. Students will soon be graduating in May and students' favorite teachers will soon have to go as well. Ridle, a communications professor, will be retiring at the end of June, leaving behind the career and students she very much loved. “This is going to be a new chapter in my life,” Ridle said. Each chapter comes with a good amount of pages and it's great to start a new chapter because you want the story to go as long as possible, but then again you want to add some different elements towards the wonderful story. Ridle has technically been working at Western for
about 33 years. She was in the Civil Services department since 1986. She didn’t start teaching until 2004 and held a love for it ever since. She loved helping the students improve on their public speaking skills and helping them go on and do great things with their speeches. Ridle said that she cannot wait for the start of her retirement but she is also a little scared. “I’m very excited,” Riddle said. “I’m nervous...but I’m also excited.” Anyone would be excited about retirement, they don’t have to worry about going to their job anymore, they will be receiving a pension from the government depending on how much they have worked, and they will finally have time to work on other things in their life like Ridle. After retirement, Ridle hopes to be more active with her small craft business. This will hopefully give her more time to help with customers, which means that there will be more sales for her business and in time, it may grow into a more well-known business. Even though another professor will be taking over where Ridle left off next semester, many of her students believe that Western will never be the same without her. Students have said that her teachings have helped them improve on not only their speeches, but their other classes as well.

Western should have a laptop initiative JIMMY PIERSON/PRODUCTION MANAGER
In almost every class you go to, you see a couple of things. Usually there is: a professor, students, papers, pens and as of recent years, laptops. A large majority of students on the Western Illinois University campus use them and most professors allow you to use them during class - for notes of course. While there are plenty of benefits to having laptops on campus, a few issues also remain. The main issue I’ve seen with having laptops is that not
every student has the same brand, make or model. For example, last week in my biology course we had to take an online quiz, but it had to be taken on a computer with “lockdown browser” (an anti-cheating software). Unfortunately, I have the type of laptop that the software does not work with. So, I had to go to the library and take the quiz in the computer lab while there were many distractions around me. The issue I have with this is that
some of my peers got to take the quiz in their quiet dorm rooms because of the laptops they have. Perhaps if everyone on campus had the same laptop, then these issues would not arise. It may be difficult to fix this issue for people my age or older, but for incoming students there could be a solution. If Western phased this program in, then in a couple of years everyone would have the same laptop and thus the same advantages. There is always the issue of cost when it comes to technology, but if laptops were included in tuition then they could also be factored into the financial aid packages of students. This would help many students to see
laptops as essential, which I believe that they are, rather than a luxury. It is so much easier to type a paper wherever you are than to have to get up and go to a computer lab or library just to do the assignment. Many schools have opted for Chromebooks due to their durability and lower cost, but this often presents issues with lockdown browser, Microsoft Office and various other programs. MacBooks are a popular brand that run a higher cost, but are also compatible with many programs and types of software. At the end of the day, it would be a question of whether cost or overall functionality is more essential. The world is rapidly mov-
ing in a technological direction and we as a University must adjust accordingly. This laptop initiative could help us market ourselves to prospective students and help current students learn more effectively. If Western started this, it would draw attention to us and would make us look innovative with the times rather than a stationary university. Laptops would no longer put students who cannot afford the technology at a disadvantage, but would rather level the playing field and give all students the tools and resources to succeed. I think this initiative is something that should happen as soon as possible to benefit the future of this institution.
Stay motivated till the end of the semester
After spring break is the time when you realize there is only about a month and a half of school left. It is very easy to lack motivation to study and do schoolwork when the weather turns nicer and all you want to do is be outside with your friends. Here are a few tips to help you stay motivated come fi-
nals week. Tip number one is to find a new place to study. The library is a great resource, but let's be real it gets boring after awhile. A place I suggest to study is a coffee shop such as The Study on the square, or The Old Dairy. Tip two is to treat the weeks after spring break like
a new semester. Everyone is always motivated after winter break for the new semester, so trick your mind into thinking that it's the last semester. Tip number three is make sure you reread your syllabuses. This tip may sound dumb, but during this this time of year people start to forget big end of the semester projects and papers. Another thing you can do to boost your motivation is to start a study group with people from your class. This is a great way to get help on stuff that you may not know and
help other people as well. The last month of school is a crucial time to either boost your GPA or lower it. Make sure you are getting all your attendance points. Tests become much easier if you regularly attend the classes. The last tip I have on how to stay motivated is to take care of yourself, whether it be your mental health or physical health. Never study when you feel like you're not 100 percent present. These are just a few tips to make your finals week go a little bit smoother.

"When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go?" keeps listeners on the edge of their seats Billie Elish
from page 5
Throughout the course of her songs, you’ll hear sounds effects that make you feel like you’re watching a scary movie or soft melodies that you can sing along to while driving with the windows down. The variation that Eilish incorporates in her work keeps you on the edge of your seat, switching from quiet and suspenseful to spontaneously loud and vibrant through your headphones. The most popular song associated with this album, in my opinion, is her song “bury a friend.” It was dropped on Jan. 30 of this year as a single, and it’s become one of her most notable songs. I think I speak for all Billie Eilish fans when I say it was played on repeat for at least a month after it
came out. The dark, mysterious vibe that the lyrics and background music give off are very capturing as the heavy bass and outbursts of noise surprise you at each turn. Eilish’s persona in the music industry is not limited to the words that come out of her mouth; she has also debuted a tarantula crawling out of her mouth along with black liquid coming from her eyes. Her music videos are nothing short of unique, especially in a musical generation that is so used to seeing girls dancing around men while they throw stacks of money into the air. In an interview with Pop Buzz, she explains that the inspiration for her horror-based music comes from the FX series of American Horror Story. Any horror fan can appreciate how she manipulates these sounds to deliver that AHS vibe. Another interest-
ing aspect of Eilish’s work is that all of the crazy stunts that viewers see in her videos are real, she states, except for one. In the “bury a friend” music video, she is shown with at least 10 syringes stuck in her back, and she explained in the interview that her stunt team would not let that part be authentic. Eilish expressed her disappointment of this, but still holds pride in pulling off so many of them. I think it is appropriate to focus on “bury a friend” when talking about this new album because its title is a quote directly from the lyrics of the well-known song. If you haven’t listened to it yet, I highly suggest giving it a try. The variety that Eilish brings to the table in the debut single and her new album as a whole is extraordinary and a breath of fresh air if you’re getting tired of listening to the same old songs.

The Godfather director, Coppola turns 80 Yesterday marked Francis Ford Coppola’s 80th birthday. The director is most well-known for the Godfather trilogy, with parts I and II in the trilogy winning best picture in their respective years. Born in Detroit on April 7, 1939, Coppola is the middle of three children. He has an older brother Augustus Coppola and a younger sister Talia Shire. Francis fell ill to polio as a child and would spend his long days in bed by allowing his imagination to unfold with sock puppets. At age 15 he read “A Streetcar Named Desire,” which he credits to being instrumental to him choosing to go into theater. However, after enrolling at Hofstra College for a major in theater arts, he decided he’d rather work in cinema, then the theater, due to watching the film “October: 10 Days that Shook the World.” Coppola was especially impressed by the quality of editing in the film. Coppola went on to attend
graduate school at the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) and was hired as an assistant by Roger Corman. Mainly helping Corman with dialogue, Coppola was given an opportunity in 1963 to make a low-budget horror film. The film, “Dementia 13,” would later go on to have a cult following. He also met his future wife, Eleanor Jessie Neil, on the set of “Dementia 13.” Once Coppola graduated from UCLA, he began to write and direct films. His first big break came in 1970 when he would co-write the film “Patton.” The film centers around General Patton and his exploits during the second World War. Coppola went on to win Best Original Screenplay for the film at the Academy Awards. Two years later was when Coppola hit the bigtime for “The Godfather.” Centered around the Corleone Mob family, Coppola adapted the book by Mario Puzo into a film. Coppola had a starstudded cast that featured
James Caan, Marlon Brandon, Al Pacino and Shire. The film would win numerous awards including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay. Coppola isn’t the only one in his family who has had a successful film career. His sister, Talia, is best known for her role as Adrian in “Rocky” as well as Connie Corleone in “The Godfather.” One of his nephews is Nicholas Cage, who has been in all sorts of films including National Treasure. Another of one of his nephews is Jason Schwartzman. Schwartzman is the son Shire and was in “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” and “Fantastic Mr. Fox.” Coppola would go on to have a successful career. He directed more than 20 films and other than The Godfather saga, he directed “Apocalypse Now” and “The Outsiders.” Coppola’s work has influenced so many. I remember sitting in my basement watching “The Godfather” or “The Godfather: Part II” with my dad. He would often recite the lines as they happened. Coppola’s work is something that anybody, no matter who they are and where they come from, can become enthralled with.

Pence is shooting for the moon Towards the end of March, Vice President Mike Pence discussed plans to send U.S. astronauts back to the moon. He stated this plan is backed by President Trump and has allowed NASA to do what it takes to meet this goal with an expected timeframe of 2024. To summarize, Pence wants NASA to send U.S. astronauts back to the moon after 50 years of the first moon landing. I have a few questions about this. Just to get this out of the way
I know some people think the moon landing was fake so this would be the first trip, that would actually be real. I know there’s evidence to suggest both sides of that argument and some people are adamant that the moon landing was faked. While I was obviously not there for the original landing, the points I’ve seen that have shown the landing to be real have made more sense. If you think it was faked, just bare with me and pretend it wasn’t.
The biggest question for me is where would the money for this endeavor come from? Space travel is not exactly a cheap endeavor. The Apollo program that put a man on the moon was calculated to have costed what today would be $200 billion after factoring in inflation. It wasn’t called a national goal for no reason. No recent federal budget proposal has come anywhere near having that much money expendable. In fact, Trump proposed a 2 percent cut to the NASA budget for the 2020 year, seems kinda contradictory. Serious cuts would have to be put in to afford that kind of mission. There were already talks of cutting the budget in places as it is, including education. There
Contact Allison Young
is no way the U.S. could afford an endeavor like this currently or in the near future. That is a lot of money for a country in debt to put out on something relatively trivial. Plus, it would require massive cuts in other departments, some of which are probably necessary. Back in the 1960s and 1970s when these efforts were in full swing, taxes were much higher and more of the budget was allocated for NASA, that’s no longer the case today. The U.S. is not as prosperous as it once was. Even if the U.S had that kind of money to spend, there are much more important issues or better ways to spend that money. Just an idea here but maybe help struggling public
schools and universities. A lot of schools across the country are struggling with financial problems that are affecting their functioning and employment. Or even put it towards expanding the pell grant and other grants so more students can get financial help affording school. Putting money into alternative fuels would also be a better use of the money, since climate conditions continue to worsen. More funding for veteran programs to help them get readjusted to civilian life and to help them with medical bills is also another option of where this money could go towards. There are so many better uses for this money, why would the U.S. use it on something trivial?

Texas Tech meets Virginia in NCAA Tournament Final
Though March is over, the madness has continued into April. The NCAA March Madness Tournament has lived up to all the hype. There’s been a little bit of everything. From buzzer beaters, to upsets, the tournament has exceeded expectations. The Final Four semi-final round happened over the weekend and lived up to all the hype. Virginia faced off against Auburn while Michigan State squared off against Texas Tech. Both games went down to the wire and finished in dramatic fashion.
The first game of the night was No. 1 seeded Virginia against No. 5 seeded Auburn. It was a tough fought game, as Virginia’s high-powered defense took on arguably the most explosive offense in the country of Auburn. The game was neck-andneck until there was about five minutes left in the game. That’s when Virginia started to pull away. They went on a run, and took the game high lead of 10 points. However, just when Auburn thought their shot of advancing to the Championship were over,
Matt Mooney scanning the court before making a big play.
the tide began to change. Auburn went on a 12-0 run to recapture the lead. From that point on, it was time to battle against Virginia. Virginia was down by two with 7.4 seconds remaining, when Kyle Guy of Virginia was fouled on a three-point attempt. Guy went on to bury all three from the line, and Virginia went on to defeat Auburn 63-62. The second game of the night was between No. 2 seeded Michigan State and No. 3 seeded Texas Tech. Michigan State was coming off a stellar victory over Duke, the best team in the country. Texas Tech was also coming off an upset victory over Gonzaga to reach the programs first ever Final Four. The game was filled with ups and downs for both sides, but the real story came

Expecting the unexpected at WrestleMania 35
For those of you who don’t know, this weekend is mighty big for fans like myself and those who spend many countless hours watching professional wrestling. Who would’ve thought that April would sneak up so fast? All the events that the World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) are broadcasting this weekend, lead up to WrestleMania 35, which aired last night live, and still can be watched through the WWE Network. This weekend has seen some rather exciting, sad and yet terrifying things. Let’s first start off with the NXT TakeOver: New York. All five matches kept fans on the edge of their seats the whole time. Even though some wrestlers who walked into New York champions remained champions, some titles switched hands, which caused a happy reaction from fans that were there live and watching at home. The first match that I want to address is the War Raiders taking on Aleister Black and Ricochet for the NXT Tag Team Championships. Even though the War Raiders retained their titles, it was quite emotional seeing Black and Ricochet take their final bow in front of the
NXT crowd. It has been noted by multiple wrestling sources that both Black and Ricochet will be called up to the main roaster, which is WWE. Some fans are afraid that this was the last time we will see the characters we like so much, because WWE CEO, Vince McMahon, is known for changing NXT (or any other wrestler ’s characters coming into the the business for that matter) in not so great ways. McMahon has a habit of making characters from NXT sit on the sidelines and only do squash matches, that are not the best to watch. Anyway, it was great hearing the crowd roar “you deserve it” to Black and Ricochet one last time in NXT. In addition to that match, the next one that I was quite surprised seeing the title change hands to was WALTER versus Pete Dunne for the WWE UK Championship. The “Bruiserweight” Dunne sadly had the title ripped away from him. He was the longest champ, holding that title for merely 685 days. Crazy, right? Anyway, WALTER is a big guy. He is about 6’4” and 297 pounds, whereas Dunne is 5’10” and 205 pounds. The match at times was hard to watch, because WALTER was
throwing Dunne around like a rag doll. One part I can remember so vividly is seeing WALTER slap Dunne’s chest as hard as he could, and you could see the welts starting to form on his chest and back. It was rather intimidating to see. The last match of the night really made me appreciate the wrestling business then I did before, as well as be grateful that I am still a wrestling fan, Johnny Gargano versus Adam Cole (BAY-BAY) for the NXT Championship in a 2-out-of-3 falls match. To give a backstory, former champion Tommaso Ciampa had to relinquish the title, due to a neck injury that needed surgery sooner rather than later. It was very sad to see him leave, but now that he had the surgery and it was successful, Ciampa can continue to take the time off, but come back sooner than we thought. Anyway, the match really showed both of Gargano and Cole’s strengths and weaknesses. It was a rather back and forth match between the two, as each man pinned each other, causing for the a 1-1 tie. Whoever was able to pin the next person, was the new champion. For those who don’t know, Gargano defines what a superhero is. In the match, when Cole’s cronies came in (The Undisputed Era), most people like me thought that Gargano had no chance. That The Undisputed Era would kick Gargano while he was

down, and do so much damage that Gargano wouldn’t be able to persevere and Cole would. However, that was not the case! You know those movies where it’s one guy against like four or five guys and that one guy just takes them all out? That was Gargano on Friday night. Gargano pulled through, attacking each of Cole’s friends and then put Cole in a submission hold. It looked like at first that Cole was going to wiggle his way out of it, but didn’t, therefore resulting in him tapping out and Gargano becoming the new champion. Tears came to my eyes when Gargano ran over to his family and hugged each one one of them. This has been his dream for years, to be the underdog who took home the gold. He did it and the whole wrestling community was satisfied. To me, Paul Levesque's product, (better known as Triple H and McMahon's son-in-law) NXT, stole the show against McMahon’s product, WrestleMaina. But then again, I could be wrong. I don’t think I am to be honest. On Saturday night, the WWE hosted the Hall of Fame 2019 ceremony, that had people emotional yet terrified at the same time. When inductee, Bret “The Hitman” Hart was accepting the award on behalf of himself and his brother-in-law, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart for their incredible journey as the tag team group the Hart
Foundation, an outside fan tried to climb up into the ring to attack Hart. From the multiple videos out there, you could see several wrestlers swarm the man who is wearing a Bob Marley dreadlock hat, coming up from the side/back and attacking Hart. It is unbelievable! Now that two out of the three events have happened, it’s time for the main event, WrestleMaina 35. Tonight (tomorrow) is going to be one emotional rollercoaster for many wrestlers, as titles could switch hands, and history could be made. I know it will be a great event to watch, even though there are 16 matches to get through and it is almost 7.5 hours of content. But still, many wrestlers could be walking out the happiest people alive, and some might be walking out feeling like the saddest people alive. For me, it will be sad to say goodbye to one of my favorite wrestlers of all time, Dean Ambrose as he is about to exit the company after Sunday, but something tells me that he will be heading back to the independent wrestling scene once his contract is officially up. This weekend has had many highs, lows and what just happened in between. Let’s hope that our favorite wrestlers will be walking out champions, the ones who deserve it at least, and the events keep us sports entertained. Twitter: boxin_briecoder

Track and field teams fully deliver at Mizzou Open By Bradley Piros sports editor
COLUMBIA, Mo. — The Western Illinois University men and women’s track and field teams were back in action over the weekend when they participated in the Mizzou Spring Open. Many students set school and personal records over the weekend. Leading the way was junior Bo Brasseur in the long jump event. She became the only Leatherneck to surpass 20 feet on Western’s all-time list and the only competitor to do so on the day. She marked a 6.23 meter (20’ 5.25”) jump to secure herself a new school record. She now holds the record in both indoor and outdoor, both results being recorded this 2019 season. Senior Isiah LeSure didn’t set a new record, but he did move himself up into seventh alltime for Western with a 7.33meter (24’ .75) mark, earning him third place. Freshman Gabe Cheeks came fourth out
of 12 in the long jump, finishing right behind LeSure, with a mark of 7.12-meters (23’ 4.5”). Fellow freshman Tia Dorshorst moved into eight all-time in the pole vault contest with a 3.31-meter (10’ 10.25”) effort. Brasseur, LeSure and Dorshorst all set new personal records with their efforts. Junior Michael Rinella tied for second in the event with a mark of 4.31 meters (14’ 1.75”). Junior Michaela Busch set not one, but two new personal records on the day. She started her day by placing top-five in the long jump (5.54 / 18’ 2.25), 100-meter hurdles (14.59) and high jump (1.66 / 5’ 5.25”). She finished her very busy day in the 4x400-meter relay as her team placed third (3:55.88). Sophomore Nick Olson placed second out of 13 competitors in the shot put with a 15.36-meter (50’ 4.75”) throw while junior Carrissa Tinsley placed fourth out of 15 with a 13.01-meter (42’ 8.25”) in the same event.
The 4x100-meter relay team of Cheeks, LeSure, Darius Patterson and Justin Montalto placed third out of six teams as it was an overall successful day for Western’s relay teams. The last two podium finishes were both third place placements as Eric Fox threw for 45.65 meters (149’ 9”) in the discus event and freshman Sierra Fox ran a 1:05.38 in the 400-meter hurdles. In the end, Western showed out in a rather difficult event and are shaping up to finish their outdoor season strong. They’ll be back in action this weekend in the Musco Twilight hosted by the University of Iowa. The Leathernecks will return to Mizzou in two weeks when they take part in the Tom Botts Invitational. The only home meet for Western will happen to be The Summit League Outdoor Championships on May 8. There’s a long time between now and then, but Western are on pace to do very well in front of a hometown crowd.

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. — The Summit League Championships are just around the corner for the Leatherneck women's golf team. However, the Purple and Gold will get one last tuneup before the end-of-season tournament when they travel to their neighboring state of Indiana for the Indiana State Invitational beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday. The two-day event held at the Country Club of Terre Haute will pose Western no shortage of competition. Joining WIU in the tourney are: LoyolaChicago, Northern Iowa, Dayton, Purdue Fort Wayne, Valparaiso, California Baptist, Evansville, Youngstown State, Eastern Illinois, Green Bay and event-host Indiana State. Among the competing teams, Butler stands out as a school to keep an eye on. The Bulldogs, according to NCAASports.org, rank as the 59th best women’s golf program in the nation. The Leathernecks, however, seem to be catching them at the perfect time with their rapid improvement as of late. The Purple and Gold have
come on strong down the stretch this season. Last time out in the NIU Invitational, they sputtered out of the gates but came back on day two looking like a completely different squad. After a lessthan-ideal composite score of 341 in the first round of action, the Necks bounced back, posting a 316 team-tally in round two. This was good enough for a fourth place finish and most importantly allowed Western to build up some steam heading into their upcoming match. In the Indiana State Invitational, the Leathernecks will roll out a familiar starting-five. The lineup, onethrough-five, will feature: junior Nicole Hamilton-Cross, freshman Emily Marrs, senior Katie McTaggart, senior Mariah Peters and junior Cassidy Jurkaites. Freshman Abby Gault will go solo, competing as an individual as she has done on several occasions throughout the 2019 spring campaign. Gault, too, will aim to build off her last outing where she showed significant improvement, cutting 10 strokes from her game with a score of 78 on day two at NIU. The upcoming event will
follow the standard format of one, 18-hole round of play on Sunday followed by another on Monday. Aside from the team’s current morale boosting momentum, they’ll get the luxury of playing at a familiar venue, one they’ve had fair luck with in the past. Head coach Lia Biehl Lukkarinen sees this as an advantage, hoping her group can capitalize with a strong start. "We enjoy the golf course at Terre Haute," Lukkarinen said. “It's fair with a couple of interesting Par 3's. Driving it straight will be important as well as short game. The team is hoping for some rounds that aren't in the cold and wind." Indeed, the weather will again play a factor as it often does with the hectic temperature variance of spring in the Midwest. Once they conclude play in Indiana, the Leathernecks will have just over two weeks to shift their focus and hone-in on the ultimate prize that awaits them at The Summit League Championships. The team will then depart for Newton, Kan., to compete in the big event beginning April 23.
