Bears looking for back-to-back wins STONINGTON — Stonington High, with its dynamic offense and experienced squad, looks to make it back-to-back wins against Westerly for the first time since 2008 when it hosts the Bulldogs on Thursday at 10 a.m. The game will be the first played on an artificial surface in the 153-game series that began in 1911. The town of Stonington had a $1.2 million turf field installed this past summer. The Bears’ field hockey team celebrated its first season on the field with a Class S state championship, now the football team looks to christen the field with a win against the Bulldogs. The teams will be hard pressed to top last year’s game from an entertainment standpoint. Stonington rallied from a 13-0 second-quarter deficit to win 34-32 before an official attendance of 4,050 on a sunny day with temperatures in the neighborhood of 50 degrees. The game marked the end of the line for both teams, Stonington finishing at 8-2 and Westerly winding up 5-6. There was one definitive first in the game and possibly a second. Stonington’s Matt Mitchell became the first player to return a kickoff for a touchdown in a Thanksgiving Day game between the two old rivals. It had been done a few times in games played on other dates. Touchdown passes on consecutive plays from scrimmage are possibly a first. Mitchell, a junior whose 95-yard kickoff return is going to be hard to beat for distance, is one of numerous Bears who will be playing in at least their second straight Turkey Day game. Quarterback Divante White and running backs Zach Poirier and Harry Calmar, all seniors, played prominently last season, as did nine other players listed as starters in the probable lineups provided by the coaches — offensive linemen Teddy Farrell, Brad Turner, Nick Ryan, Ryan Francis; defenders C.J. Dipollino, Patrick Dooley, Stephon Hodge, Zach Mueller; and Jacob Shulda who was listed as a starter at tight end and linebacker by coach A.J. Massengale. Mitchell was not listed as a probable starter, but his touchdown gave the Bears a 34-26 lead. Stonington enters this year’s game with a 7-3 record, while Westerly comes in at 3-7. Only six Westerly players listed in last year’s probable lineup — running backs Tom McGuire and Clayton Minnich; linemen Charlie Elliot and Matt Moretta; wide receiver Anthony Garro; and Scott Liguori, who played in the defensive backfield a year ago — are on this year’s squad. One of them, Garro, missed the last three games with an injury. Stonington comes in averaging 35.3 points a game and has not scored less than 20 in any of its nine contests. Poirier and Calmar are two of the most prolific running backs Stonington has had in the last three decades. Poirier comes into Thanksgiving with 2,856 career rushing yards and Calmar enters with 2,261. Only Zach Wheeler and Josh Whitford have surpassed 2,000 since 1990. Wheeler, Class of 2009, finished with exactly 3,100. Whitford, class of 2010, wound up with 2,127. White has completed 42.3 percent of his passes (52 of 123) for 862 yards and 10 touchdowns. He has been intercepted five times. White has spread the ball around. Mitchell has 16 receptions for 295 yards and two scores. Poirier has 11 catches for 176 and two touchdowns, Calmar has 11 for 156 including a touchdown, and Bow Johnson has 8 for 131 with two touchdowns. See Bears / Page 15

Chargers determined to close with victory WOOD RIVER JCT. — Winning on Thanksgiving ranks high on Chariho High football coach Mike Kelly’s preseason list of team goals. “Our first objective is to win the Division II Super Bowl,” said Kelly, who led the 2011 Chargers to the Division II championship. “If we’re not in it, I want to win the last game of the season.” Losing on Thanksgiving, Kelly said, “puts a sour taste in my mouth. For seniors, the last game is the one you will always remember.” The Chargers (2-8, 1-6 Division II-A) fell out of Division II Super Bowl contention long ago, but they still can experience a big-game feel when they travel to play Exeter-West Greenwich (6-3, 6-1 Division IV) Thanksgiving morning at 10. “This is our Super Bowl,” Kelly said. “Our seniors have never lost to Exeter-West Greenwich and we don’t want to lose now.” Turkey and all the trimmings have tasted splendidly more often than not for Chariho in the series that started in 1996. The Chargers holding a 13-4 edge, including three in a row. As Division II teams generally boast more size and depth than Division III teams let alone Division IV, the Chargers have enjoyed the upper-hand against the Division IV Knights even in years when EWG was playoff bound and playing for a championship. In 2008, the Knights won the Division IV Super Bowl, but lost to Chariho, 32-20. In 2010, EWG reached the title game, losing to Mount Pleasant, and also lost to Chariho, 45-26. In both instances, EWG put more emphasis on the Division IV semifinal game that is played the Tuesday following Thanksgiving. EWG’s coaching staff has limited the carries of key runners and even pulled starting units in the second half against Chariho to rest regulars for the short turnaround between Thanksgiving and the playoff semifinals. This year, the Knights finished second in Division IV regular season at 6-1, losing only to regular-season champ North Providence, 27-6, Nov. 15. EWG has lost both of its nonleague games to Division III teams. The only mutual opponent for each team is East Greenwich, which topped Chariho, 21-14, in two quarter of the Injury Fund before besting EWG, 34-17, in the regular-season opener. The Knights feature a trio of senior skill-position players who supply the bulk of the team’s offensive production. Running back Dwight Anderson has scored 13 touchdowns and has rushed for nearly 800 yards. He has hit the end zone three times in a game twice, registering the hat trick of TDs in wins over Scituate and Smithfield. Quarterback Jacob Hornoff and back Dustin VanLuven complement Anderson’s production. “They’ve had a good year,” Kelly said. “For us it adds something to the game to play them in a good season.” This game will mark the final scholastic contest for just a handful of Chariho seniors. Starting offensive linemen Dylan Gencarella, Matt Heroux and Kyle Wallin join starting defensive linemen Dan Urena and Matt Gooding as Chariho’s regular starting seniors. A large group of juniors dominate Chariho’s starting offensive and defensive units. Urena’s blocked field goal and 82-yard touchdown return keyed Chariho’s 20-14 season-opening win over Division III Narragansett. After that, the Chargers lost seven straight games against more experienced opponents. The recurring theme in most losses was an offense bogging down inside the 20-yard line and a defense that squandered crucial gains on third downs leading to opposing scoring drives. But in the last two games, the emergence of junior Sal See Chargers / Page 15

Minnich and McGuire lead Westerly in rushing yardage. Minnich, a junior, has gained 773 on 140 attempts (5.5 per carry) while scoring nine times. McGuire has 544 yards on 138 carries (3.9) with six TDs. Liguori, a senior, has completed 44.4 percent of his passes (32 of 72) in his first year at quarterback. DeSantis as a dependable feature back has elevated the offense. DeSantis (6-0, 225-pounds) has started all season, but has produced a pair of 100-yard plus, multiple touchdown games in a 33-14 win over Toll Gate and a competitive 26-14 loss to Central in a Division II seventh-place cross over game. DeSantis, who has 772 yards on 152 carries, rumbled for 136 yards on 20 carries against
Toll Gate and 155 yards on 28 carries against Central, scoring a pair of TDs each game. His specialty is running up the middle, breaking tackles and dragging defenders for yards after contact. DeSantis and junior end Tyler Bobbin lead with four touchdowns apiece. Bobbin is the team leader with 20 receptions for 284 yards. Junior quarterback Jacob Rousseau has developed into a passing threat, operating many plays out of the three-pistol offense.
