The Gap Anglican Church of St Mark Dedication and Blessing of Ministry Centre The Gap Anglican Church invited members of the community to join with members of their congregation to celebrate the official opening of the new Ministry Centre at St Mark’s The Gap on Sunday 18 February. After 12 long years and $1.35 million the Ministry Centre was officially opened by the Most Reverend Dr. Phillip Aspinall in a ceremony of dedication and blessing witnessed and celebrated by many members of the congregation and community. Following the service and blessing, those attending were invited to partake of afternoon tea and enjoy musical entertainment provided by the Westside Orchestra. For many years the Westside Orchestra has used the “Old Hall” for their practices. The hall was originally situated on the corner of Kaloma and Settlement Roads and then moved to its final destination on the corner of Waterworks and Kullaroo Street. Being a social centre and place of worship for the community, it was modified to accommodate the needs of the congregation and the community at large. The new Ministry Centre provides a state-of-the art building with modern facilities and will prove to be a sought after venue for events and meetings within the local community.

Gap Community Eagerly Awaiting Opening “ALDI is eager to bring our unique shopping experience to more Queenslanders, offering high-quality products at permanently low prices.” “We are pleased to confirm that plans for our new store at The Gap are on track, and we expect it to open mid 2018. It will also be directly connected to the main shopping mall for ease of access. Once open, The Gap ALDI will be supported by a team of 1520 permanent full and part-time employees, providing a unique career opportunity in retail. website: http://www.westernecho.com.au

Plan Your Brisbane Over recent months Council has spoken to thousands of residents across the city to understand what we love most about Brisbane and how we can shape our future. Important choices regarding how we can ensure housing remains affordable, lifestyle opportunities are created as our city grows, ensuring getting around Brisbane is easier not harder and how to create green-space and leisure areas for all of us to enjoy. More than 5000 residents have completed the initial online survey and I invite you to have your say and play the online game or attend a series of engagements across the city to create a Charter of Principles that will guide Brisbane’s future. Plan your Brisbane interactive game available until mid-April. Register to keep in touch with the project via www. brisbane.qld.gov search Plan Your Brisbane. A hard copy of ‘Plan Your Brisbane Survey’ is available from my ward office, please call if you require a copy posted or if you would like to discuss this next exciting chapter for our city.
New Transport Plan for Brisbane Council is currently preparing a new transport plan to guide how our transport network will grow and adapt over the next two decades and beyond to make Brisbane Australia’s most liveable city. In addition to Plan Your Brisbane, we are seeking your feedback on the transport plan until 30 March 2018 to ensure everyone has the opportunity to ‘have your say’, visit www. brisbane.qld.gov.au search New Transport Plan.
Waterworks Road Ashgrove (Trout Street to Betheden Terrace Ashgrove) The upgrade to Waterworks Road between Trout Street and Betheden Terrace s one of 90 congestion-busting project across the city to improve traffic efficiency, reduce congestion and improve safety for all road users. Two information sessions will be undertaken to discuss the project with the community and seek feedback about the proposed design. I will be attending both of these sessions and look forward to

hearing your feedback. When: Thursday 8 March 2018 – 5-7pm and Saturday 10 March 2018 – 9-11 am Both sessions will be held in front of Woolworths, Ashgrove Shopping Centre on Ashgrove Avenue Ashgrove. The Gap Neighourhood Plan In 2016 council commenced community led consultation for The Gap neighbourhood plan. As a result, a neighbourhood plan draft strategy has been developed through a combination of community feedback. Council is in the process of preparing the draft neighbourhood plan that will go before a full council meeting then to the Qld Govt. for a review of the plan. After the Qld Govt. approval, the neighbourhood plan is adopted and will form part of City Plan. I expect the completion of this process by late 2018.

Congratulations to our 2018 student leaders
Energy efficient appliance rebate now open
It has been a privilege to attend student leadership ceremonies right across our community and see so many of our young people ready to take on the responsibilities of being a leader of their peers. At many of these ceremonies, I’ve had the opportunity to speak on leadership and the important qualities that will help you be a great leader. One of the most vital is the ability to listen and to understand that everyone has something to contribute. The best leaders don’t take on problems by themselves – they build teams. Once again, I congratulate you all on your selection and wish you well for the year ahead.
Energy efficient appliances often cost more upfront but lead to long-term savings as well as being better for our environment. That’s why the Queensland Government has now opened a rebate of up to $300 if you buy an energy efficient appliance. As long as the appliance has a minimum 4-star energy rating you can apply to receive $200 for a washing machine, $250 for a refrigerator or $300 for an air conditioner. If you have bought one of these appliances since 1 January 2018 then you are still eligible to receive the rebate as long as you apply before 20 March 2018. To apply for the rebate visit www.qld.gov.au/ appliancerebate This rebate is another part of our $2 billion Affordable Energy Plan which also ensures electricity prices do not rise past inflation and a direct reduction of $50 for every household bill for the next two years.

We are getting closer every day to the largest sporting event Australia will see this decade. The 2018 Commonwealth Games will see the Gold Coast host more than one million spectators, around 6600 athletes and team officials, 50,000 workers and volunteers, and 3500 accredited media representatives from more than 70 Commonwealth nations. The games are on time, on track and on budget and I know that many locals are volunteering, attending or even competing (shout out to Cedric Dubler who officially qualified for the decathlon in recent weeks). Federal Update More support for Ryan families
The Coalition Government’s new Child Care Package will deliver support for more families in Ryan. We are providing an additional $2.5 million in funding support for genuine childcare reform which will benefit 70.5 percent of families in Queensland. The annual rebate cap will be removed for most families, which will free them up to work as many days as they choose without a looming limit on their child care subsidies. The Coalition Government is increasing child care subsidies for those Australians working the hardest but doing it the toughest, to allow them to work more hours or take more of their wage home each week. Families can increase their childcare support by increasing their hours of working, training, studying or volunteering. Parents can use the online estimator to find out how the new Package impacts them at https://www.education.gov.au/ ChildCarePackage.

Stay Cyber Smart
I hosted a Cyber Security Business Forum on Wednesday 21 February in Toowong. It was an informative occasion with a presentation delivered by cyber security membership organisation CREST ANZ. The Government is leading the way with the $230 million Cyber Security Strategy, however it is important that we all take action to protect our own security by following these tips: 1. Limit what you share on social media – check your privacy and security settings. 2. Use strong passwords on all accounts, and use two-factor authentication where possible. 3. Back up your files – this way you will not lose anything if an incident occurs. 4. Install anti-virus software on all your devices, and keep all software up-to-date. 5. Watch out for scams – think twice about clicking on questionable links or attachments. For more information, visit www.staysmartonline.gov.au or call (02) 6141 6666.

Hear and Say to help Queensland students to ‘Hear to Learn’ Queensland not-for-profit charity, Hear and Say’s ‘Hear to Learn’ School Hearing Screening Program is helping students to get the best from their education. Now in its fourth year, ‘Hear to Learn’ has proven very popular with schools, students and parents, reaching far beyond initial expectations. Chris McCarthy CEO Hear and Say said, since commencing in March 2015
we have screened the hearing of more than 19,000 students across 250 school visits across Queensland. “To date the program has identified 23% of students, on the day of our visit, were experiencing a hearing or ear health issue. This figure includes 14 percent who required further investigation from a GP or a hearing test. What is troubling is that 38 students were later found

to have a conductive hearing loss and 16 were diagnosed with a sensorineural or permanent hearing loss,” Mr McCarthy said. Babies born in Australia receive a New Born Hearing Screen while still in the hospital, however even if a child has passed the screening as a new born, hearing loss can still occur in childhood. While some children born overseas may never have had a hearing screen. Mr McCarthy went on to explain, if a hearing health issue or hearing loss is not detected then the child may experience speech and language delays, educational difficulties and behavioural problems. “The ‘Hear to Learn’ screen is a simple nonintrusive screen conducted at the school and takes less than 7 minutes per child. It is for all students, but recommended mostly for Prep students to start their education on the right track,” Mr McCarthy said. There has been strong demand for Hear and Say’s school hearing screening with over 90 primary schools having rebooked for their students to be screened this year, and a further 22 having secured an annual screening date for 2019. Chris McCarthy is encouraging schools to book their students for school hearing screening to avoid missing out, by calling the team at Hear and Say on 07 3850 2111or email hearing@hearandsay. com.au.

The Body Project A program for 14-17yr old young women Has your daughter had body image concerns? Is she able to discern the media coverage of body beautiful? The Body Project has been developed and evaluated at Stanford University after 16 years of research. (Research has not yet been completed for young male participants) The program consists of verbal, written and behavioural activities in which participants voluntarily critique the thin beauty ideal promoted for females. The program runs for 4 x 1hr sessions, run weekly. These activities have been shown to result in decreased subscription to the “thin beauty ideal” and consequent reduction in body dissatisfaction, negative mood, dieting, and eating disorder symptoms, as well as decreased risk of future eating disorders, and improved psychosocial functioning. Young Minds and Minds4Health at The Gap are pleased to be able to offer this program. The program is being offered at The Gap Clinic for four weeks during Term 1, and also during Term 2. Term 1: Beginning Saturday 10th March for 4 weeks 8.30am to 9.30am Term 2: Beginning Saturday 5th May for 4 weeks 8.30am to 9.30am Please see advertisment at left, for booking contact details. Well, it stands for Group Organising Outside Social Events, and they work to extend the range of entertainments and events for members of the club. Once a month we have a general meeting, with an invited external speaker. The talk will be on a topic of particular interest, such as local history or health-related for older people. We have regular dine-outs, theatre trips, bus trips to interesting places, book group and coffee mornings. But besides the “regular” things, GOOSE group exists to add one-offs for the club, like a picnic, or a showand-tell of family history material, an Australian poetry recital, even a Mad Hat dress-up competition – something different from time to time, in pursuit of our motto “Active Retirement”. If you would be interested in joining, or just giving it a try, we would welcome your enquiry. Just call our secretary Jan on 3366 2998. We meet at 2pm on the first Thursday of every month, at The Gap Baptist Church, by the traffic lights at the junction of Waterworks and Settlement Roads – handy to lots of buses, and with some spaces for car parks. Places are available – no waiting list – and we’d love to meet you.

TRAINING AREA/RANGE NOISE NOTICE Residents to areas surrounding the Enoggera Close Training Area are warned that it is a Defence live firing range and to expect periods of heightened noise volume. Defence now has the capability to notify residences of increased periods of noise volume on the training area via an SMS alert. These alerts are intended to advise residence of an increased level of forecasted training area noise over a prescribed period of time. The Gap Historical Society Inc. Established 2000 Firstly, let us join the ranks of those congratulating our dedicated member Philippa on being awarded the OAM in recent Australia Day Honours – it is great to see community service being appropriately recognised. Also we congratulate two other members on being recognised for their community service – Richard Speechley received The Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Achievement Award and Nurdon Serico received the Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Cultural/Arts Award. At present, the Society is working on its program of speakers and outings for the year. Among possible speakers are Dr James Lergessner – noted speaker and author of “My Brisbane Rediscovered” - published in January this year. Ed Coxen from Probus is another likely speaker in the near future. We need more!!! Possible trips/outings include the Telstra Museum, Fort Lytton, Police Museum, Caloundra Air Museum and the Tramway Museum. On a lighter note, we congratulate our Life Member Beryl Hogan on receiving her 50 year Membership of The Gap Garden Club Inc – Well Done Beryl!! And finally – our sincere thanks to Ferny Grove Mens’ Shed, members of which have restored our piano stool and member Barry Giddings has made a great Gavel and Block for use by meeting chairpersons. Many thanks, fellows.

Diagnosis, Diagnosis, Diagnosis When it comes to lumps on and under the skin of our pets, just “keeping an eye on it” may be a sensible approach if the mass is benign. But therein lies the problem. While some lumps can be identified as benign based on their appearance, location and “feel”, others are nondescript and potentially malignant or invasive. The older our pets become, the more lumps and bumps they develop. To make matters more complicated, some malignant masses may behave in a benign fashion for months or years, but then quickly spread to other organs (metastasis) or become so large at their site of origin that they begin to cause a functional problem. Early surgical intervention in these cases will usually be curative. My university lecturer in dermatology used to say that there were only three rules when it came to lumps and bumps – “Diagnosis, Diagnosis, Diagnosis”. So how can we be sure about the nature of a lump? Fortunately, the identity of most of masses located on, in or under the skin can be revealed by performing a non-invasive procedure known as a fine needle aspirate biopsy. Most often this can be performed without the use of sedation or anaesthesia, and causes very little discomfort. Cells from the mass are harvested via a fine needle and spread on a microscope slide, air dried and stained for microscopic examination. Many experienced (and lumpy) veterinarians are well versed in the microscopic appearance of the common benign and malignant tumors, and a cost-effective diagnosis can often be made during the consultation. If there is any uncertainty, the smears can be sent to a Veterinary Pathologist for a specialist opinion. Occasionally this biopsy procedure is unhelpful and a very small piece of the tumor needs to be removed and sent to a pathologist. This is known as an incisional biopsy, and often requires sedation or general anaesthesia. Lumpy pet? A stitch in time saves nine.
Kind Regards, Scott and Chris

Lions Club of Ashgrove/The Gap Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions started off the year well with the induction of three new members, Elizabeth Baldacchino, Ray Compton and Marnie Ward. All were welcomed into our club at our first official meeting of the year. Every member brings to our club their own individual skills and abilities and these new members are no exception. However, one of our new members, Ray Compton, has already shown himself to be a valued member of our community and, in recognition of the work he has done in the past, he has been given the honour of being part of the team that is carrying the Queen’s Baton for this year’s Commonwealth Games. His list of achievements is amazing, amongst them are: He was the founding member of the Moggill/Mount Crosby Lions Club as well as for the local cricket club.
He established the Sidewalk program for the Cerebral Palsy League, which is now sponsored by Australia Post He was a member of Rotary and whilst there was a major instigator and fundraiser for the rural family accommodation, adjacent to the Wesley Hospital, as well as being the instigator of the Rotary Club fundraiser, “Opera in the Vineyard”, which is now in its 25th year The list of his achievements is endless but Ray is not one to ‘rest on his laurels’, as
Ray and Bronwyn Compton
The Western Echo March 2018 Page 16
Ashgrove/The Gap Lions Club’s newest members Marnie Ward, Ray Compton and Liz Baldacchino
he has been the Chaplain of the Wesley Hospital and is currently the Chaplain of St Andrew’s Hospital in, Ipswich and has recently helped to raise funds for the restumping and building of ramps at the Frontier Services Church in Cunnamulla. He certainly gets around! Despite all this activity, he has raised three children with his wife of 53 years, Bronwyn, at his side. These days you will find Ray selling Valentine’s Day roses at the airport on behalf of the Lions Medical Research Foundation, alongside other Lions club members, and no doubt cooking sausages at one of our popular sausage sizzles!! We a r e v e r y h o n o u r e d to have Ray as one of our new members and, with the assistance of other members of the Ashgrove/The Gap Lions club, we are sure he will continue to serve the
community as he has done in the past. He is a well-deserved recipient of the honour of being one of the Queen’s baton carriers. Well done Ray!! However one does not need to be such a high achiever to become a member of Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions. Although a lot of time and effort is put into raising funds to assist various organisations and individuals in our local community, a large part of the Lions ethos is in fellowship and in being part of an international organisation that helps to bring understanding and tolerance throughout the world. If you would like to find out more about what it is to be a Lion and what we do, we will be holding an information evening soon after Easter and everyone is invited to come along and meet with us. There will be refreshments available and the opportunity to meet some of our members, who will be happy to share with you the benefits and the fun of being a Lion member. More information regarding this event will be in the April edition of Western Echo. However, if you are keen to find out more about becoming a member now then please contact our Membership Chair, Peter Cooper (3856 2390), who will be more than happy to talk to you and invite you along to one of our regular meetings.

Helen Black Group Amnesty International
With the support of Amnesty International supporters in Australia and around the world, Amnesty International continues to work towards protecting human rights and transforming the lives of people and communities globally. With Syria’s civil war stretching into its seventh year, Amnesty International works tirelessly to help those caught up in the conflict and those forced to flee their homes. This is done through Amnesty International researchers who are on the ground in Syria, exposing the horror of everyday life and giving a voice to those affected, as well as campaigners and supporters who are calling on governments to protect civilians caught in the conflict. Fighting between the Syrian Government and rebels has so far killed over 300,000 people and created more than 5 million refugees. Amnesty International calls on governments around the world, including the Australian Government to ensure that civilians are not targeted during the conflict and that those fleeing Syria are resettled quickly and safely. Tirana Hassan, Amnesty Crisis Response Director says, “Syria can feel overwhelming because of the enormity of the conflict. However, when Amnesty International’s researchers tell us another human rights activist in the country has been disappeared, when a doctor calls to tell us another hospital has been targeted in an airstrike, my team does not have the option to be overwhelmed.” The Helen Black Amnesty International group meet between 9-11am on the second Monday of the month in The Gap and would love to hear from anyone interested in knowing more about Amnesty International, or joining our group. Please contact Di on 3300 1861. For information about the Ashgrove Amnesty group please email amnestyashgrove@gmail.com.

In order to maintain its tender consistency, goat needs to be prepared on a lower heat and longer cooking time which makes it perfect for casseroles and slow cooking. Farewell Voices of Birralee’s choristers singing for the ANZACS
Voices of Birralee will this month farewell 30 young adult choristers leaving for France to sing at the ANZAC Day Dawn Service at the Australian National Memorial. The once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, which will also mark the Centenary of the Battle of Villers-Bretonneux, arose from a nationwide bid with the Department of Veterans’ Affairs where Voices of Birralee was selected to provide choral services for First World War commemorations on the Western Front from 2015 - 19. The touring choir will be conducted by Paul Holley OAM, and the experience will be enhanced for many choristers who have discovered they have relatives who served on the Western Front on or around 25 April 1918.
Voices of Birralee’s ANZAC Day Commemoration Choir will sing at the Australian National Memorial, Villers-Brettoneux, France. Farewell them on 18 March
The community is invited to witness the beautiful and moving music this choir will take on its tour, with a Dedication Service and
Concert held at 3pm Sunday 18 March at The Great Hall, Brisbane Grammar School. Tickets are $20 for adults /
concession and $5 for children and can be booked via Voices of Birralee’s website - www. birralee.org.
Boost retirement income when you downsize If you have a property that you’re considering selling, and a retirement that would be improved by more income, then a new option is available. From July 1st, 2018, individuals 65 and over may be able to contribute proceeds from the sale of one eligible property to superannuation. This superannuation money can be used to boost your retirement income. Before this many people would not be able to contribute this capital that they had unlocked from their house to superannuation, because they were no longer working. If you’d like to learn more about the conditions governing downsizer contributions, or how you could enhance your income in general, please call us on 3510 1333, or email admin@tfaas.com.au. We offer a complimentary, obligation-free initial appointment to discuss every individual’s situation. We are also running a free one-hour workshop on improving retirement income at 10am on Wednesday the 14th of March. Please contact us if you’re interested in attending.

Multiple Birth Awareness Week 11 - 18 March AMBA launches annual Multiple Birth Awareness Week to raise awareness of the importance of providing information and support to multiple birth families. The Australian Multiple Birth Association (AMBA) today announced the theme for this year’s Multiple Birth Awareness Week (MBAW), running from 11th to 18th
March 2018. The annual week-long event centres around running community events to raise awareness of the important work done by AMBA and local clubs around Australia in providing vital support to multiple birth families. In 2018, AMBA is focusing on raising awareness around the importance of the support network for families and individuals.
Ashgrove/The Gap Men’s Shed
This year is refurbishment year for the Yoorala Street Men’s Shed facility. The building the old Pony Club clubhouse is in need of a major makeover and this is about to happen. The Men’s Shed is using substantial funds from Brisbane City Council, the State Government and private benefactor grants to refurbish the Council-owned facility. In the past two years, Council has upgraded the public parking area, built new pathways and installed a new roof - all necessary and very welcomed improvements. Now the interior of the building will get the makeover it badly needs. For the first time, there will be disabled access and disabled and female bathroom facilities. Other improvements, all architect designed, include a new kitchen, an enlarged and enhanced main meeting room, two smaller meeting/ breakout areas, new ceiling and insulation and air-conditioning throughout. The end result will be a greatly improved meeting facility for the growing Men’s Shed community and for other current and potential community group users of the building. Subject to Council approvals, we expect the building works to commence in early March and to be completed in two stages of a few weeks each. Our residential neighbours and users of Corramulling
Park - the dog leash-off area for instance - may experience the usual noise and parking inconveniences associated with an urban building project, but certainly no worse than usual. Men’s Shed will keep our neighbours informed by letterbox drop when the works are to commence. We ask for patience and understanding with any disruption that may be experienced. And a reminder. This is a Council facility which the Men’s Shed as licensee/head tenant currently uses only two mornings a week. If you are a community or similar not-for-profit organisation in need of a meeting place, there may be the opportunity - subject to the normal approvals - to use this newly refurbished facility. If you want to discuss this possibility, please see our website (www. ashgrovethegapshed.com) for contact details. Send us an email or phone our Secretary on 0449 144 826 or Community Liaison Officer, Bill on 0419 845 251.

The theme for Multiple Birth Awareness Week (MBAW) 2018 is ‘Strength in Numbers’. AMBA Chairperson, Ashlee Tenberge said: “To AMBA, strength in numbers represents what the group is all about. It’s about giving families with twins, triplets or more, strength by providing information and support. It’s about connecting these families with a community of over 5000 other families of multiples so that they know they are not alone.” Many families with multiples have travelled, or still are travelling, a long and difficult road. The task of carrying, delivering and raising two or more children at once is extremely demanding with many associated risks and challenges. 4,375 total multiple births in 2015 Up to 65% of all multiples are born preterm (80% if triplets or more) Low birth weight occurs
in 50% of all twin births, and 95% of triplet and higher order multiple births 15% of identical twins are affected by Twin to Twin Transfusion Syndrome These are the numbers that unite multiple birth families. These are the numbers that give strength to AMBA’s cause. A cause about providing more support to families with multiples across Australia. ‘Support from those who know’. We e n c o u r a g e f a m i l i e s , schools and support organisations to discover more by visiting www.amba.org. au and www.facebook.com/ lianMultipleBirthAssociation. AMBA has a growing list of events for MBAW around Australia; we invite you to contact us or go to www.amba. org.au/clubfinder to find a contact for your local AMBA club or to organise a photo of a local family with twins, triplets or more.

Brisbane Tramway Museum Society and Ferny Grove Mens’ Shed 2018 is really starting to pick up momentum at the Tramway Museum & Ferny Grove Mens’ Shed. The mens’ shed has just received a grant from BCC of $16700 for the purchase of new machinery which will enable us to manufacture parts to keep the trams rolling. A new lathe and a milling machine are the major items to be bought. All members will undergo training in fire safety in the near future and also in the correct, safe use of machinery in the various workshops on site. Ferny Grove State High School Art students are soon to begin painting 2 murals for the Museum, depicting the history of trams as a major public transport system in Brisbane. We will award prizes to the 2 students whose concepts we use in the murals. We are getting closer to commissioning our new sub-station, replacing the existing facility which has served well for many years, but which is showing its age. A number of smaller structural projects will also get under way this month, and we are gearing up for birthday celebrations later in the year. April will be a big month for the museum – we commemorate the running of the last tram in Brisbane on the 13th with a special NIGHT RUN. More on this event next issue.
Catholic Bushwalkers Join the Catholic Bushwalkers in all varieties of walks – city, local bush, mountains, rainforest, and creeks. Some areas are seasonal depending on the weather and time of year. The Club also programmes “beginner’s walks” to let visitors find out if they like walking distances – a bit more than the morning fitness walk around the block. For the beginners, we try to stay near the city. For more information ring Greg on Ph: 3351 4092. website: http://www.westernecho.com.au
Shed Happens for Men at The Gap/ Ashgrove Another year begins. Our first Shed Happens night for 2018 was held on 21st February at the Scout Den in Paten Rd, The Gap. Although the number of attendees was not as good as usual, the guys who did attend were treated to a very interesting evening. The weather was probably the main factor that caused the lower numbers as a storm was threatening. Thankfully, the rain held off until all the proceedings were finished. Our interviewees were Gabriel Dubler and Pastor Thomas Bohmert. Both had extremely interesting stories about their travels throughout the world. Gabriel born in Switzerland, spent about ten (10) years of his life just travelling the world. He also spoke of his family and how one of his sons, Cedric, through hard work and determination came to represent Australia in the Decathlon at the Rio Olympics. Pastor Thomas was born in Dresden, East Germany in 1965. After twelve months in prison for trying to escape Communism and an oppressive regime, he left family and East Germany in 1983, living with relatives and friends in West Germany until 1989 then migrating to New Zealand. He then eventually moved to Australia. The interviewees for March 2018 are yet to be finalised. Watch this space for further details. Our next Shed night is to be held on the 21st March 2018 in the usual place, the Scout Den in Paten Rd, The Gap, commencing with a BBQ at 6.00pm. When Triple Zero (000) doesn’t work In an emergency, most of us know to call 000. However, what
happens if you experience difficulties with 000? This may be due to bad reception; out of your service provider’s range or you can’t provide the operator with accurate location information. The Emergency+ app More than 65% of incoming calls to Triple Zero (000) are from mobile phones and in most cases, people aren’t aware of their location, especially if they are in areas like a beach, park, on the highway or simply unfamiliar surroundings. The Emergency+ app provides you with GPS co-ordinates, as well as address and suburb details, that you can relay to an emergency operator. Download it now – for free! Call 112 as an alternative to 000 112 is a secondary emergency number that can be dialed from a mobile phone. 112 will connect you to emergency services exactly the same as 000 and uses any available mobile network service, so if your service provider is down or out of range, it won’t matter. It’s important to note that if there is no mobile coverage on any network, you won’t be able to reach the emergency services line via a mobile phone, regardless of which number you used.

Frog Hollows in the garden 3300 6304
www.patenparknativenursery.org.au
Frogs are an important part of the ecosystem and yet their numbers are dwindling. They are carnivorous animals, eating a large variety of insects, spiders, small reptiles and fish. Different species live in different habitats - in trees, among grasses and in rock crevices. Thus, many species can live in a small area. What they all need, however, is water for breeding. Their eggs, laid in water, hatch into aquatic, herbivorous tadpoles that gradually change over 1-12 weeks into frogs. The sloping terrain of many Brisbane gardens provides an opportunity to increase frog numbers. Hollowing out an existing low-lying part of the garden that normally collects rainwater, lining it with a waterproofing substance like clay covered with soil, is the start of your own ‘Frog Hollow’. The planting around this area is as important as providing a water-filled breeding place for the frogs. Thick edge planting of several types of medium height sedges and grasses discourage cane toads from the rain garden. Tall sedge (Carex appressa) is a hardy plant that survives well in both wet and dry conditions. Its lime-green upright foliage contrasts well with common tussock grass (Poa labillardierei) with
blue-green leaves. Another clumping species, the creek matrush (Lomandra hystrix), with its strap-like leaves grow naturally along creek banks and are renowned for erosion control. Two plants that like root immersion in water are the woolly frogmouth (Philydrum lanuginosum) and the triangular mat club rush (Schoenoplectus mucronatus). The lovely yellow flower of the woolly frogmouth resembles the open mouth of the frog. It forms clumps along the margins of waterways and boggy areas. Its lime-green leaves develop reddish tones as they age. The triangular club rush has triangular leaves and forms attractive clusters of seed heads on its rigid stalk. Both assist in oxygenating the water for the tadpoles and provide an exit point for the newly metamorphosed frogs.

This month, March, is a busy one for gardeners. The garden soil needs to be revitalised for spring blooms and winter vegetables by adding organic material such as old cow manure and compost, and suitable fertilizers. Beetroot, broccoli, carrots, silverbeet, kale, are some vegetables to consider. It’s time to plant strawberry runners which like a rich well drained soil in an open sunny position. Consider planting flowers,
herbs and vegetables in the one plot. Garden pests will be confused with this interesting mix. When planting seedlings always water them in with a seaweed solution such as Seasol, and apply mulch but don’t let the mulch touch the plants. You’ll find the mulch helps control the soil temperature and also preserves moisture. Always provide shade for the little plants too. The Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar month. Visitors and new members are most welcome. Meetings commence after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. The hall is accessible by wheel chair and close to public transport. For more information, please phone Pat, the president, on 3356 1256.

H. Serico Reflections... Nurdon - A Rich Heritage by Richard Speechley
I first wrote of my life-long friend in the February 2010 issue of The Western Echo and it is now appropriate to update his rich heritage to his community, particularly in light of Nurdon receiving the Lord Mayor’s Cultural Arts Award in the 2018 Lord Mayor’s Australia Day Awards. It is from a very strong ethnic legacy and loving family background that I write this story of a life-time friend, so much admired and known to many in this area and far afield. Nurdon Horace Serico was born the second child, brother of sister Evelyn, to parents Maurice and Evelyn Reen (nee Monkland-Olsen) Serico on 21 May 1933 at the Lady Bowen Hospital, Wickham Terrace, Brisbane. Maurice was a member of the Fungallu people of the Taroom district and Evelyn Reen, who had been born on the banks of the Mary River at Tuchekoi, near Gympie, was a member of the Gubbi Gubbi people who are inter-related with our district’s Turbal aborigines. In 1939 the family moved to their home in Empress Terrace Bardon, from where Nurdon and his sister became the first aboriginal children to be enrolled at the Ashgrove State School. Nurdon was to spend all his primary education years there and though not ‘top of the class’, he was into all the sports offered - athletics, cricket, football etc. and was to become the school’s first State Title holder when, in 1945, he won the Broad Jump (now called Long Jump) at the state’s Primary School Boy’s Championships. Still under 14, he also won three sprint titles in the 50, 100 and 200 yard sprints (these events are now raced under the metric system). Following Grade 7, Nurdon’s secondary schooling was at the
State Industrial High School in Edward Street, Brisbane. Here his sporting prowess saw him not only win the 100 yeard State Secondary School title, he set a new State record in the 200 yards and during his time at S.I.H.S. he was awarded blue pockets for rugby league, cricket and athletics. One occurrence, while at high school still brings a smile to his face. It was decided at this boys-only school, to teach the lads the fine social graces of dance. Calling in the (then) well-known dancing instructor Sandy Robertson, classes were soon underway. One thing Nurdon resented most was dancing with another boy. How on earth could he learn under those conditions? He took it upon himself to approach the head teacher and suggested that the girls from nearby State Commercial High should be invited down to learn. While still in the head teacher’s office, he was to be witness to a call placed to the head teacher at SCH and within a week the boys were learning to dance properly with girls. As his father Maurice was a strapper and masseur at West Leagues Club, it seemed only natural that Nurdon should join the under 14s and played A Grade with Wests for the next 15 years. Maurice, who was known as “the man with the golden hands”, served not only his local club but State, Australian and visiting overseas teams in that capacity. He was also an active member of the Bardon R.S.L. and was founder and trainer of the Bardon Athletics Club. On leaving high school before the final year, Nurdon obtained an apprenticeship in fitting and turning with the Brisbane City Council’s Tramways at Boomerang Street, Milton. He stayed a number of months before moving to Central Purchasing at City Hall, then

after eight months, moved to a cadetship in Radiography at the Royal Brisbane Hospital. This career change was to see the State Health Department have a dedicated employee for the next 49 years. Nurdon completed his course at Q u e e n s l a n d U n i v e r s i t y, graduating in 1954 in the presence of his very proud parents. In 1959 Nurdon married Pat Thrower, a girl from Goondiwindi, moving to The Gap with their three children, Maurice, Michael and Melinda who were to attend both primary and secondary state schools in The Gap. Nurdon and Pat’s granddaughter, Emma Jane, is also a muchloved member of the family. Working the early or late shifts, at times ‘on call’, saw Nurdon’s appointment as Senior Radiographer and in 1968 became this state’s first Neuro Radiographer, setting up the first unit. In 1970 he was appointed Technical Officer, an advisory position being responsible for the establishment of all units throughout the state of Queensland. In 1976 Nurdon was awarded a Churchill Scholarship to further his career in radiography, which saw him spend time in the United Kingdom, Europe and the
United States while on his study tour. Throughout his many years with Queensland Health, he spent a great deal of time travelling the state setting up training programmes for regional systems in country hospitals - now extended - and also facilitating conferences to bring city and country together, often over three days in centres such as Cairns, Townsville and Mackey, bringing staff from the country to the coast. His retirement in 1999 was a sad loss to the department at the Royal Brisbane Hospital - he had served for 49 years and yet, in that time, he had served many years on other committees of great worth. A warmly felt departing gesture was the naming of an x-ray facility in the Orthopaedic Department in his honour. As a member of the Advisory Council on Aboriginal life, times and traditions at the National Museum Canberra, his role included the design of that aspect of the building. After 20 years on the Board of Aboriginal Health Service here in Brisbane, he was made a Life Member. Playing cricket for The Gap Pastime Club for a period of 24 years, at times Nurdon served as Chairman of the Cricket Committee. (Continued on Page 31)

Reflections... Nurdon H. Serico - A Rich Heritage
(Continued from Page 30)
A keen interest in photography, especially of a historical nature, many in our local area, Nurdon has served on the committees of both the Ashgrove and The Gap Historical Societies and has also been VicePresident and President of The Gap Historical Society and at present is Patron of the Balaangala Community Group which aims to bring together indigenous and nonindigenous Australians through sharing creative practices. Both of Nurdon’s parents lived well into old age, Maurice passing in 1998 (aged 99) and his mother aged 96 in 2005. At the time of Evelyn Neen’s death she had been Senior Elder of her Gubbi Gubbi people for a long period. Nurdon’s sister Evelyn is now the senior spokesperson. Wi t h i n h i s o w n f a m i l y, Nurdon’s wife Pat was to pass
away in 2014 after 58 years of marriage with daughter Melinda coming home to look after her Dad. Elder son Maurice is keenly involved in Aboriginal affairs, being CoChair of the State Aboriginal Reconciliation Council and Chair of our local Balaangala Community Group. Nurdon is also extremely proud of his granddaughter Emma Jane (daughter of Melinda) who teaches English and History in Secondary Education at the Murgon State High School, both subjects close to his heart. A most pleasing aspect of his contribution to the community during retirement, is the ten years spent with the Murri Court. In this regard, he counselled offenders and advised the Magistrates of Aboriginal Lore and Laws and is now retired from this position.
