New Aussies Receive Citizenship at 2020 Australia Day Ceremony Hundreds of local residents gathered on a hot and steamy Australia Day January 26 to celebrate the receiving of Australian Citizenship by over 90 candidates who pledged their allegiance to Australia in a moving ceremony conducted by The Gap Ward’s Cr Steven Toomey who was the Presiding Officer. New citizens came from 29 countries and represented ever continent with the exception of Antarctica and, of course, Australia. The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap hosted the event, the 26th successive year it has done so, held again this year at the JA Robertson Hall at The Gap State High School. As a unique reminder of the day, each also received a native Australian plant, kindly provided by the Paten Park Native Nursery, The Gap who also provided the extensive stage decorative plants. Organisers thank Cr. Steven Toomey for sponsoring the event, and to Kate Jones and Julian Simmonds. Following the ceremony candidates, their families, guests and members of the local community enjoyed a morning tea - featuring many Aussie staples, including Vegemite and lamingtons.

Back to school in 2020 Once again, it has been an exciting start to the year seeing all the preppies begin school. It’s such a busy time for everyone to ensure we have a smooth start to the school year. I want to thank all the principals, teachers and school staff who work hard in the lead up to day one so our children can hit the ground running. With our record investment in school infrastructure, this year more quality buildings will come on line in our community. New infrastructure includes: • A new multimillion-dollar building with additional classrooms at Milton State School • New classrooms and a playground Red Hill Special School • New classrooms at Ithaca Creek State School and Petrie Terrace State School Having good quality classrooms for teachers and students is critical to providing excellent education for our children.
Rotary Citizenship Ceremony Attending the Rotary Citizenship Ceremony at The Gap State High School each Australia Day is one of the absolute highlights of the year for me. Seeing how emotional our new citizens and their families are about not only becoming Australians but also being a part of our local community is always heart-warming. Congratulations to all of the new Australian Citizens that we’ve welcomed into our local community in 2020 and a massive thank you to all the Rotarians that put together this event.
Has your junior sports club signed up for FairPlay Vouchers? One of the biggest barriers preventing many kids from getting into sport is cost. The Palaszczuk Government FairPlay Voucher scheme provides $150 vouchers for families that have a Centrelink health care or pensioner concession card. Upfront costs for junior sports can put pressure on families which is why we’ve developed this $7 million program to help 46,000 children. 2020 marks the 60th year for Ashgrove Forum Communicators Club which was established in 1960 under Foundation President Judith Morwood. Ashgrove is now the oldest existing Forum Club in Queensland. Forum was established to train women in correct meeting procedure and to become confident public speakers. To celebrate this milestone, Ashgrove Forum is holding a Diamond Anniversary Dinner at the Ashgrove Golf Club at 6.30pm on Wednesday, 4 March 2020. Cost per head is $45.00. Booking Enquiries: Tel: 0409 615 514 Past Members, partners and guests are welcome to attend, as are any members of the public who would like to know more about Forum. Enjoy a fun night out with a delicious two-course dinner while being entertained by original speeches on the theme “Diamonds are Forever”. Glam up wearing your diamonds, genuine, fake, rhinestone or plastic, and join us for a great night. The first monthly Meeting of Ashgrove Forum for 2020 was held on 15th January. In the regular “Seldom used Word” segment, Ann Davies explained the old northern English word “wuthering”. Wuthering means to blow with a dull roaring sound or characterized by strong winds, e.g. “it’s a wuthering day on the moors today” in Emily Bronte’s novel “Wuthering Heights” it is used to describe the atmospheric tumult to which the place is exposed in stormy weather. The next meeting of Ashgrove Forum will be held in the Ashgrove Library, 87 Amarina Ave, Ashgrove, at 6.30pm on February 19th. Visitors most welcome to attend. Ashgrove /The Gap Lions
It is hard to believe that we are, once again, at the beginning of a new year. I am sure you have heard many people say that being 2020 everyone should have a clear vision but it is worth repeating, especially when it comes to our leaders around the world, as there seems to be a lot of chaos around at the moment! However Ashgrove/The Gap Lions club’s vision always is clear, which is supporting and being part of our local community as well as assisting others throughout Australia and the world with financial donations in times of trouble. One thing that comes to mind immediately is the terrible bushfires that have affected so many people in our southern states. Despite the fact that there have been no meetings, due to the
Christmas break, our board has still been active and, in the past 3 months, Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions Club have donated over $6500 to the fire appeal. This money was raised in various ways throughout the year by our club. It is important to remind everyone that ALL money collected by Lions clubs goes back into the community. None of it is used to pay for the administration of any of the clubs. Now plans are in place to continue raising funds. Already we have a few major events in place such as the ever popular Garage Sale and now, due to the success of the inaugural Welcome Dinner last year, we are a planning another event for the middle of the year with a name change to ‘Community Dinner ‘.
We will no doubt also run the successful Melbourne Cup trifecta and will be regularly spotted cooking up delicious sausages in various places around the local area, including Bunnings. Once the club is back in full swing after the Christmas/New Year break more details of these and other events will become available. So watch this space!!! However the very first event in our calendar is the Lions Youth of the Year. This is an annual event that is not so much about raising funds but supporting our youth. As usual, the club level of this competition will take place at the end of this month and will
be well supported by The Gap State High School; Marist Brothers Ashgrove and Mt St Michaels College. We wish all the competitors the very best of luck. So welcome to 2020. Ashgrove/ The Gap Lions Club hope that is it a wonderful year for everyone and that you will continue to support us to help others. If you would like to make a donation or would like more information regarding Lions Clubs please check the website www.lionsclubs.org. au or contact our membership chair: Peter Cooper on 0488 069 089. The jolly sound of ‘hohoho’ continues to echo through The Gap long after Santa’s retreat to the North Pole. The Gap Laughter Club meets every Saturday at 9am in Walton Bridge Reserve, Waterworks Road, practising laughter yoga – a unique exercise regimen that combines the deep breath of yoga, gentle stretches and playful laughter exercises, without jokes. Developed by a doctor in India in the 1990s, laughter yoga has community clubs like The Gap’s ‘Kookaburras’, in more than 110 countries. “Laughter is as natural as breathing and yet so many of us leave laughter to chance in our everyday, waiting for something funny to occur,” says The Gap Laughter Club coordinator, HeatherJoy Campbell. “Laughter Yoga harnesses the act of laughing as an exercise. It’s a mood booster, stress buster, a light cardio work-out and a great social connector. “We’re making our community’s mood brighter one laugh at a time.” As a non-profit activity, laughter clubs have no joining or membership fees and are run by trained volunteers who have completed an international laughter yoga certification. Gold coin donations from participants are donated back to community projects. “Those gold coins become a further giveback. We were able to contribute $500 to Communify’s pantry at Christmas time, we’ve donated to the drought appeal in the past, and most recently, in response to the fire disasters sweeping Australia,” says HeatherJoy. The Gap Laughter Club meets in the Walton Bridge Reserve park on Waterworks Road, opposite Jevons Street. The laughter session starts at 9am and runs for about 40 minutes. “The exercises are adaptable and accessible, all ages come along, and all abilities can participate: all you need is a smile and willingness; no jokes or punchlines required,” says Heather Joy. For more information, check out The Gap Laughter Club on Facebook or phone HeatherJoy on 0412 742 593. The Gap RSL Sub-Branch News
The formal entry to the memorial area of Walton Bridge Reserve has been in place for almost twelve months, this article has been written to inform the local community of the genesis and significance of the four pillars which are prominent at the intersection of Waterworks Rd and Glenaffric St. In January 2018 the members of The Gap RSL Sub-branch were inspired to add a formal entry to the refurbished Walton Bridge Reserve to enhance the existing Memorial in Glenaffric Street. The initial concept was for a ‘Memorial Gate’ to lead into the area used for future Community memorial services such as for ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. The project was seen to enhance a major redevelopment funded by the Brisbane City Council which included gardens, tiered seating, stairs, access deck and drinking fountain. The
Sub-branch acknowledges the funding contribution from The Department of Veteran’s Affairs through the Armistice Centenary Grants Program and the fund-raising efforts of past service members and their families whose accumulation of resources enabled the project to be completed within budget. The location of the site, adjacent to a busy main road, presented a compelling reason to take a bold approach. The Walton Bridge Reserve, within which the memorial park sits, is split in two by Waterworks Road. The two halves are connected by a pathway under Walton Bridge, with the main pedestrian route, playground and amenities situated on the opposite side of the road. Considering several design submissions, the Sub-branch selected Hour of Long Shadows after considerable discussion with veterans from various

periods and commissioned the artist, Cameron Eaton to oversee construction. The unconventional design approach was conceived as an innovative way to remember the fallen, whilst keeping the traditional aspects of alive. Cameron Eaton, the winning artist is a local resident who took design inspiration from a poem, “For the Fallen” by Robert Laurence Binyon. “They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them.” Severely cropped portions of Service Insignia projected in black onto monolithic concrete columns, like shadows cast from a single light source, evoke the solemn hours of remembrance from Binyon’s poem. The Memorial Entrance is therefore known as ‘The Hour of Long Shadows’. The fourth stanza of Binyon’s poem is poignant and its broad adoption as an Exhortation for Ceremonies of Remembrance is apt. The reference to dawn and dusk in the third line calls to mind an image filled with long shadows, distorted and abstract, cropped and incomplete as shadows can often be, and opens an avenue to explore bold and dynamic shapes.
And shadows themselves invite a range of interpretations. A person of great stature or standing, could be said to cast a long shadow. Tragic events, deep loss, unfortunate circumstance and ongoing suffering all cast a shadow over our lives. The interpretation is open. Individuals will respond to the work depending on their own experience and recognition (or lack) of the symbology employed. The four pillared gate is not an uncommon feature of memorial spaces in Australia. There is a similar entry structure to a park just a few short kilometers away at Des Connor Fields, Ashgrove in Brisbane’s inner west. And the Memorial itself has a set of pillars which include plaques commemorating service personnel from the region. The challenge, for the architect was to develop an idea that was unique, reflecting artistic purview and aesthetic, while somehow fitting inside the rigid constraints of the pillared form with all the historical and social recognition which it carries. The Gap Sub-branch RSL thanks Cameron Eaton for his design and inspiration, also, The Gap community, The Department of Veteran Affairs and Councilor Steven Toomey for their continuing support to our cause. Lest we Forget.

Amnesty International
Recent times have been unsettling internationally with the rising tensions in the Middle East, trade wars between the US and China, the on-going protests in Hong Kong, and devastating nationally for those affected by bushfires. It is in times that these that we all realize the importance of coming together in support of individuals and communities facing threats, be they environmental, social or political. Amnesty International is one organization fighting for the human rights of people around the world facing threats to their freedom of expression and rights of assembly. It is also fighting for governmental action on climate change. Amnesty sees this as a human rights issue “not only because its devastating impacts affect the enjoyment of human rights, but also because it is a man-made phenomenon which can be mitigated by governments” according to Kumi Naidoo, Secretary General of Amnesty International. To stop the harmful impacts of climate change on our rights to life, health, food, water, housing and livelihoods (all basic human rights) Amnesty is calling on governments and corporations to be accountable and take responsible climate action. Voices of Birralee turns 25! Brisbane-based community choir, Voices of Birralee, celebrates its 25th anniversary this year - a wonderful milestone f o r o n e o f A u s t r a l i a ’s finest child and youth arts organisations. Voices of Birralee evolved from humble beginnings when in late 1994, Julie Christiansen formed The Westside Youth Choir to perform at the Ashgrove / The Gap Christmas Concert. The community reaction to the choir was so encouraging that Julie officially established the choir with its first ‘official’ concert in June 1995. In 2000, the choir was renamed Brisbane Birralee Voices and this remains the name for their signature children’s choir. As with all evolutions, the organisation grew further to form more ensembles including the Birralee Blokes and Resonance of Birralee, becoming the umbrella organisation, Voices of Birralee, in 2008. Significant performance highlights for the organisation include First World War Centenary Commemorations on the Western Front, Europe (2015 – 2019), 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, Queensland Ballet’s The Nutcracker and QPAC’s Spirit of Christmas. Artistic Director and Founder, Julie Christiansen

OAM, comments “the one thing that has remained the same during our journey is our commitment to our young people and their musical development. We believe every child can and should sing and this philosophy remains at the core of our organisation.” “I am so proud of all the young musicians and artistic masters who have been part of our story. I can’t wait to see what the next 25 years will bring and look forward to continuing our love of music in Brisbane and further afield.”

The Gap Historical Society Inc. Est. 2000 The start of this new year also signals the start of a new era for The Gap Historical Society. For the first time since the society was established some 20 years ago, it will meet in a different venue. All ties with its traditional home – The Nullagundi Centre – have effectively been severed. That venue is now the home of The Gap RSL. The Historical Society will now meet each month in the Resource Centre at The Gap State School. The school has kindly made this venue available to us. Its main advantage is the much more user-friendly access. This is of particular interest to our ageing membership, several of whom need assistance to be mobile. This year we will be concentrating on gaining more members, and on further work on The Gap Time Line project. At some stage, we will decide on a format for putting the time line onto our website -www.thegaphistory.com.au. Currently, we are upgrading the website by removing some of the lesser-quality photos and replacing them with better versions. Our meetings are still to be held on the 4th Saturday of each month (except December) commencing at 2.00 pm, usually with an interesting guest speaker. Visitors are most welcome.
The Probus Club of The Gap Isn’t it a long hot summer? Isn’t it nice to have a refreshing shower and change into clean clothes after sweltering? How are you going to manage either of those if you are homeless on the streets of Brisbane? The answer is: Orange Sky helps by bringing mobile laundry and shower vans onto the streets. The Probus Club used its Christmas lunch to raise funds for Orange Sky, and hundreds of dollars went their way. We are not a fundraising or advocacy group, but once a year we like to help out. Our principal purpose is fun, or “an active retirement” as we like to call it, and the rest of the lunch certainly lived up to that with men’s versus women’s choirs, a visit from “Zsa Zsa Gabor”, the electric dog mascot, good food and conversation. We are eagerly looking forward to our first meeting of 2020. The plans for 2020 are well set, with outings, lunches, dinners and, at the general meetings, speakers on every topic between outer space and the ocean depths. If you would be interested in joining, or just giving it a try, we would welcome your enquiry. Just call our secretary Jan on 3366 2998. We meet at 2pm on the first Thursday of every month, at The Gap Baptist Church, by the traffic lights at the junction of Waterworks and Settlement Roads – handy to lots of buses, and with some spaces for car parks. Places are available – no waiting list – and we’d love to meet you. website: http://www.westernecho.com.au
Is it Just a Hairball? Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is relatively common in cats, even in kittens as young as 4 months of age. Many of us own cats that vomit relatively often, and if there is hair in the vomit, we often assume that “hairballs” are the cause. In fact, frequent vomiting of hairballs may be a sign of inflammatory bowel disease! IBD-affected cats have a “slow” stomach and small intestine, which impedes the movement of hair through the gut. Chronic, occasional vomiting is seen in almost 80 percent of cats with IBD and is frequently the only symptom. However more severely affected cats may experience diarrhea (sometimes with blood and mucus), increased or decreased appetite, weight loss and lethargy. Depression and lethargy are only present in 20 percent of cases. Inflammatory bowel disease in cats may be a precursor to a bowel cancer known as lymphosarcoma, and this is a well - recognised complication of severe celiac disease in people. So how do we diagnose IBD? How do we know when the family cat is just consuming a lot of hair and bringing it back up, versus a cat whose hair-laden vomit is, in fact, a symptom of IBD? A thorough physical examination is often helpful in narrowing the list of possibilities. Blood tests can be useful, especially in older cats, to rule-out some of the other serious causes of chronic vomiting (e.g. over-active thyroids). X-rays and ultrasound examination of the abdomen may also be helpful in some cases. A trial on high-fibre, hydrolysed or “highly digestible” prescription foods can be worthwhile, while in some patients we may elect for a trial on medication, typically cortisone. Severely affected cats may even require bowel biopsies if these first two measures are unsuccessful and the patient is very unwell.
Kind regards, Scott and Chris

Popular JP Service Keen to Expand The increasingly-popular JPs in the Community Program at The Gap Village Shopping Centre is hoping to expand its services to local residents – it just needs more volunteers. A core group of eight Justices of the Peace rotate through a roster on Tuesday mornings at The Gap Village, where they witness certain legal documents free of charge. Site coordinator Michele Rice, who has served the community for 35 years as a JP, would like to introduce a Saturday morning session to cater for people who work during the week. “We’ve had a number of people say to us that it would be great if the service was available on the weekend, so we are looking into it,” Ms Rice said. “We just need a few more JPs to get involved in the to legal documentation and that there was a high level of program to allow us to staff two rosters.” State manager Damien Mealey said JPs provided an responsibility attached to the role. “We now have 250 community sites around the State important service to members of the general public in regards and they are proving particularly popular for local residents seeking assistance,” Mr Mealey said. “The community sites are easily accessible and cater for people seeking to have documents signed such as Statutory Declarations, Affidavits, Enduring Powers of Attorney, Land Title Transfers, Wills and other documents that community members need to have witnessed.” The Gap community signing team is based inside the shopping centre outside Coles near Sushi King and Fancy That boutique and is easy to find. There is the added benefit of photocopiers and printing services at the nearby Gap Village Newsagency. Any JPs in the local area interested in joining the community program are asked to contact the Community Engagement Team on 1300 301 147 or email jp@justice.qld.gov.au. Anyone interested in becoming a Justice of the Peace or Commissioner for Declarations should see the ‘How to become a JP’ section at www.qld. gov.au/jps.

.....Principal's Points.......Principal's Points...... Payne Road State School As students engage in their new school year at Payne Road State School, they excitedly celebrate the opening of our new STEAM HUB in our cosy, curious and enticingly refreshed library. Students will be able to meander through our new curved and comfortable lounges, new library nooks and inspirational artworks created by our senior students and student councillors (‘Creating our Future’ paintings showcase) – an authentic use of student voice! Learning in our STEAM HUB is just one way that we will INSPIRE learning in 2020 and stimulate the thinking and the voice of every student! Just recently student voice has emerged with passion in a number of contexts: *The School Captains’ leadership process *Kaleidescope Music evening enhanced by the Creative Visual & Media Arts, Indigenous Cultural Art and STEM (Design Thinking) *Our Eco Ambassadors leading thinking and environmental action in every single classroom We f u n d a m e n t a l l y believe that every student is important, every student has their own unique gifts and every student can learn and reach their potential! Some may find their own voice in art, in drama, in science, in technology, in craftwork, in design, in serving, in cooking, in coaching, in dance, in sport, in mathematics, in inventing, in story writing, in being kind, or in listening! This is why we nurture the ‘WHOLE CHILD’ and celebrate the learning and development of all students at Payne Road SS. We especially whole-
heartedly welcome our new Prep students for 2020 as they begin their primary schooling full of curiosity, creativity and wonder. We aim to integrate these dispositions into our cleverly connected curriculum that aims to INSPIRE learning that is authentic and has purpose. We are acutely aware that we need to gradually develop the Payne Road Learner with the Learning Assets that will equip them to deal with dynamic 21st century demands – and be able to create their own futures of choice! From day 1 our new families will have opportunities to meet, mingle and connect with our existing families – the first being our ‘Tea and Tissues’ morning tea with our P&C once the students are placed in their new classrooms. These critical connections only enhance the existing passion and dedication of our Payne Road community. We understand that the wellbeing of our parents and families, is a strong protective factor for the wellbeing of our students! opportunity to undertake improvement works. This included weeding, aerating and top dressing our oval and progressing with the makeover of our Library. We a l s o r e p l a c e d a n d upgraded our solar system, as part of our stewardship and sustainability focus. In addition, annual maintenance checks and services were undertaken on school plant and equipment. The school grounds were an inviting environment for the students to return to, thanks in part to the generous contribution of our families at our end of vacation working bee. The beginning of the school year is always an exciting time in our school community, as the children reconnect with their friends after the holidays and welcome new students to our school. Teachers are full of enthusiasm and highly motivated to help the students in their care achieve outstanding learning and teaching outcomes. Congratulations to our Year 6 student leaders. This amazing cohort of children will lead our school community this year, accepting the challenge of highlighting and actively living our CHANEL Virtues of Charity, Hope, Acceptance, Nurture, Excellence and Love. In 2020 our House Captains are: Benjamin F and Ruby W … DUHIG - (Blue) Aiden A and Almira (Ally) R … RUSH - (Red) Eimer G and Chloe P … O’DONNELL - (Green) Talulah (Tully) G and Oliver E … DUNNE - (Gold) We also have a number of students who will undertake the role of 2020 Speech and Drama Captains. Congratulations to Oliver
E, Isabella C, Luke D and Rose B. We have several areas we will be developing in 2020, as part of our Annual School Improvement Plan. In part, this will include a sustained focus on writing and the reading / writing connection. We will also commence targeted professional development for staff in Mathematics, and Numeracy. Teaching and learning will be enhanced by a strategic increase in technology and devices across the school, with students in Years 1 – 6 having access to iPads or laptops on a 1:1 ratio and Prep students benefiting from one device between two children. This scheme will assist in the range of opportunities we offer our students to develop their digital citizenship and capability. This is just one of a suite of tools we will draw from to build literate, engaged, creative, critical and productive students. Our community will also focus on the strategic development and enactment of a sitespecific Energy Reduction and Management Plan. This will identify energy performance indicators and benchmarks, with associated actions to guide our quest to reduce our carbon footprint, as we answer the call to be responsible stewards. What great opportunities await! Any families i n the local community who are interested in knowing more about what our school has to offer are warmly invited to contact our school office … Tel 3300 1202. I would like to extend a welcome to all 601 students who started this week at The Gap State School. Along with our returning students we welcome 71 Prep students and 17 new students to our school. I am incredibly proud of the calm and focused start to 2020 with all children settled and engaged in learning from day one. Transition meetings which serve as handovers from one teacher to the next serve a vital role in ensuring teachers have a thorough understanding of their new students. These meetings took place during our Pupil Free Days. Another whole school focus during our Pupil Free Days was our social
emotional learning program, You Can Do It. All staff participated in a full day of training which focused on staff and student well being. Our investiture of our Student Leaders will be held in the Multi-Purpose Building on the 10th March. Our School Captains for 2020 are Ellie Woods and Nathan Niessl and our Vice Captains are Jasmine Edwards and Matthew Casey. Some upcoming events in Term 1 include the ‘Get to Know Your Teacher ’ e v e n i n g s , B e g i n n e r ’s Instrumental Music Camp and North West District swimming trails. I look forward to sharing and celebrating our successes each month. Joanne Nicholls - Principal

Timely Warning to ‘P Plate' Drivers
Wi t h n e w f i n e s d u e to be enforced as of 1 February 2020, it's probably timely to look at the rules regarding mobile phone use - particularly that of P Plate Drivers. Using a mobile phone, held in your hand, is illegal. If you need to use your mobile phone, pull over and park in a safe place first. P1 Licence holders are not allowed to use: • hands-free kits or Bluetooth accessories • wireless handset • loudspeaker functions These restrictions do not apply to P2 licence holders but they can only use a hand held mobile phone if they have pulled over and parked in a safe place. If you are a P1 licence holder and a passenger is
on a call, they cannot use loudspeaker as this may distract you while you are driving. The Queensland Government has announced tougher penalties for drivers who use their mobile phone illegally while driving. Penalties for illegal mobile phone use increase from $400 and 3 demerit points to a $1000 fine and 4 demerit points as of 1 February 2020. The increased penalties mean that some licence holders, like learners and P-Plate drivers, could lose their licence from just one offence. Double demerit points will apply to all drivers for a second mobile phone offence within 12 months. Bicycle riders will also be fined. Visit www.qld.gov.au website: http://www.westernecho.com.au

Big Year Ahead for Serenata Singers! The Serenata Singers, a community choir based in The Gap, will be celebrating its fiftieth anniversary in 2020. In addition to a packed concert schedule, the year will be marked by a special reunion function commemorating this milestone and the publication on the choir’s website of photos and documents drawn from the choir’s history. The choir is always looking for new members and 2020 would be an ideal time to join! The choir sings a variety of popular, traditional, spiritual and show tunes. It rehearses weekly on Monday evenings at The Gap Uniting Church and performs regularly, mainly for retirement communities, care facilities and community groups. The choir is particularly interested in adding some male voices. No audition is necessary. An ability to read music is helpful, but not required.
The choir will hold an open night on Monday 2 March at 7.15pm at The Gap Uniting Church auditorium, 1050 Waterworks Road, The Gap. This is a no-obligation chance to meet choir members, find out about the choir, and observe and join in a rehearsal. If you can hold a tune and love to sing, we would love for you to join us in 2020! Ithaca Probus Club Another exciting year ahead After a great Christmas lunch at the Paddo Tavern, members of Ithaca Probus Club set the new year’s activities off with the popular traditional Aussie Day BBQ at the club’s usual meeting place at Ashgrove Bowls Club. Members caught up after the holiday break, as well as being entertained by a very Australian singalong group. We are all looking forward to regular activities resuming for another year around the Probus theme of Friendship, Fellowship and Fun. There is already huge interest in a proposed visit to the Outback Spectacular on the Gold Coast in February. Social interaction at our monthly general meetings is the primary focus of the club with minimal formality, a short talk from one of our members so we all get to know each other better, then plenty of chatter during the morning tea break before a guest speaker informs and entertains us. Other activities which further promote social interaction are the monthly dine-outs - usually dinners but occasionally a lunch for a change. There are cards afternoons and a poetry group. Monthly club newsletters keep members informed of all these social opportunities. If you are interested in joining us as a prospective member, or maybe as a guest speaker, please phone either of our Club Membership Officers Sue Vivian on 0413 544 202 or Janelle Rhodes on 0412 628 646. The Gap Branch It is with significant regret and sadness that I announce the closing of The Gap Branch of Save the Children. The Branch has existed for over 50 years and through the efforts of the membership over that period of time, has contributed greatly to the organisation. Fund raising, including the Annual Soup Luncheon, Fashion Parades, Stalls (both craft and food), Raffles at Ashgrove, The Gap and in more recent years, Keperra, have raised much needed funds for many worthwhile and much needed projects. When the appeal went out for household linen, toys and clothing, the response was overwhelming. Not only were the donations many in quantity, but the quality was outstanding and those donations filled my car many times over. We were blessed when holding our Annual Soup Luncheons and Fashion Parades by the generosity of The Gap Uniting Church community, St Peter Chanel Church, students at The Gap High School and the incredible efforts of Heather Dent and the Peile sisters as well as many other friends and family members. These events always proved to be much anticipated, always thoroughly enjoyed and very well supported by members of the local community. Even though The Gap Branch membership was small, thanks to their commitment and enthusiasm, the branch’s endeavours were rewarded by the consistent support from people of The Gap, Ashgrove and further afield suburbs. We were always amazeds and most appreciative of the support which in turn spurred us on to carry on ‘… another year’! Sadly, the membership and our supporters have aged somewhat (over the last 20 years, not so surprising) so we took the decision to accept the inevitable and retire gracefully. Our sincere and heartfelt thanks also go to The Gap Historical Society for the use of the Nullagundi Centre for our regular committee meetings. Our sincerest thanks to all those who have supported us in our efforts. Save the Children Queensland continues to grow its programmes for disadvantaged Queensland children – from the Queensland/New South Wales border to Mt Isa, Doomadgee and further. The number of Domestic Violence Refuges has increased from two to seven. During floods and bushfires, Save the Children is there helping where needed and providing support. Please keep Save the Children in mind for any donations or support you may be able to provide, while being a worldwide organisation, Queensland Save the Children works tirelessly for Queensland Children in need. Kindest regards and again, heartfelt thanks, Julie Nichles – Past President

Rotary Carols by Candlelight Concert 2019 The eleventh annual Carols by Candlelight Concert organised by the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap was held at Dorrington Park on Saturday, 14 December, 2019, to a very enthusiastic audience. Well in excess of 4000 people of all ages attended. Jenny Woodward, our compere, had spoken to the weather gods and we enjoyed a rain free event for the first time in four years. With the full moon on the night, the switching on of lights could be curtailed to allow huge candle and lighted mobile phone waves to create a quite spectacular Carols by Moonlight. The National Servicemen’s Memorial Pipes and Drums opened the big night with Scottish music and drill routines. Rocus Band then reminded us of many present and past jazz, big band and some Christmas favourites before the visit from Santa created a long trailer of the younger audience as he moved through the crowd. After the official opening and before the Carols got under way, the Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap presented Jenny Woodward with a Paul Harris Fellowship for her commitment to this Rotary event over many years. This is the highest award a Rotary Club can present for service to the community. The Carols segment of the program was then brilliantly performed by the 47 piece Westside Orchestra and 21 Ignite choristers, under the baton pf David Law, which created a very full stage indeed. David and Jenny got the audience involved with great enthusiasm and enjoyment. The JMC Academy were responsible for all the audio visuals and ensured words of the Carols were shown on our big LED screen. We thank all our entertainers and technicians for their unstinting enthusiasm for this event. Our raffle of the Christmas Gingerbread House which was generously donated by the French Patisserie at Toowong was won by Tracey Wishart who has attended the last eight Rotary Carols by Candlelight and who remarked that this was the best Carols Concert the Rotary Club had organised.
During the Carols, the Rotary Club advised the audience of the collection for the Rotary Program – Kids to the Coast from drought affected areas. The collection realised just over $1100.00 which will be forwarded to the program organisers to allow kids from around Roma to Cunnamulla the chance to see the ocean. To finalise the entertainment a fabulous fireworks display by ACE Fireworks sent the audience off for Christmas very satisfied with the night festivities. The Rotary Club of Ashgrove/The Gap would like to acknowledge the great support received from the Brisbane City Council, including Enoggera and The Gap Wards and Councillors Andrew Wines and Steve Toomey. We also thank the community for their support through the range of sponsorships which provided advertisements or Christmas greetings on the LED screen. A special thanks to the members of the public and their families, including our Army friends, who helped with the setup, pull down and pack up before and after the Concert. This was a very welcome gesture so thank you. Hope to see you all again at Christmas 2020.

Aniseed Myrtle 3300 6304
www.ppnn.org.au
There are several trees that, after rain, exude a fragrance that is immediately recognisable as that of the rainforest. One such tree is the aniseed myrtle (Syzygium anisatum), a beautiful, rare sub-tropical rainforest tree, indigenous to north-eastern New South Wales. Although it may grow to a large size in its natural environment, it is usually restricted to 10m in the garden and responds well to pruning to maintain it as a shrub or small tree. In the latter forms it is great as a gap filler, wind break or as a potted ornamental. Aniseed myrtle prefers a well-drained, nutrient rich soil in a sunny position or in filtered light. Once it is
established, it is relatively drought and frost hardy and so is ideal for low-maintenance gardens. It has a dense crown of lush, evergreen foliage, that starts out soft and pink, and the leaves have a wavy margin. In spring a profusion of fluffy, white flowers creates a stunning and fragrant display. Traditionally the aniseed myrtle was used as a vitalising tonic or a steam infusion to calm stomach upsets. The fresh, dried and powdered leaves of this tree have become a significant adjunct in the food industry and in producing aromatic oil since the 1990s. The popularity is so high that commercial plantations have
been developed to protect the species in the wild whist providing for its everincreasing demand. It is used in bread dough, biscuits, stuffing, glazes, dressings and meat dishes. Apart from its wonderful aniseed flavour in teas and cooking, the leaves of aniseed myrtle have been found to be have a superior antioxidant profile and are
high in vitamin C, vitamin E, folate, zinc, calcium and magnesium. They also have antimicrobial properties, including on the pathogenic Candida albicans. Grow an aniseed myrtle in a pot near the kitchen door. As the leaves grow quickly, you will have a year-round supply of this amazing bush spice.
Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club On Thursday, 5th March, the Mitchelton and Districts Garden Club meets at the Enoggera Memorial Hall In Trundle Street. The guest speaker is Debbie Aitcheson from the Chilli Patch at Minden. The benefits of using herbs in cooking is the topic of her talk. One benefit that comes to mind is the intake of less salt in our diet because herbs enhance the flavour. Debbie has cooked using herbs at previous meetings and our members have enjoyed biscuits and other food prepared by her. It is possible she will have some potted herbs to sell. February could be a bit uncomfortable to be outside for long in the garden, so time could be spent on propagating. Layering is a satisfactory way for this time of year. Just take a lower branch of a shrub you’d like to reproduce; make a bend in
it, enough to crack the stem and break the bark about 10 cm from its extremity. Smear some cutting gel or honey over the broken bark; then push the part that’s broken into the soil and anchor it down with wire loops or heavy stones. Keep the soil moist and in about a month, roots will be developing. Wait until you are sure the new plant is growing before
The Western Echo February 2020 Page 28
cutting it away from the parent plant to grow in a pot or somewhere else. If your parent plant has no branches close to the ground, a similar process called air layering may be used, but this time the fractured part is wrapped in a plastic covering containing damp coarse sand and moss (peat or spaghnam). This club meets on the first Thursday of the calendar
month after morning tea which is served at 9.45 am. Visitors and new members are most welcome. There’s a lucky door prize, continuous raffle and plant table. The hall is close to public transport and accessible by wheel chair. For more information, please phone the president, Pat, on 3356 1256.

Step up to clean up our creek You are invited to the Save Our Waterways Now (SOWN) annual Clean Up Australia Day event on Sunday 1 March at the Ashgrove Sports Ground. The event will start at 8 am and finish at 10 am with a sausage sizzle. The slogan for 2020 Clean Up Australia Day is “Step Up to Clean Up”. SOWN President John Abbott said while the Ashgrove Sports Ground was well known for rugby and bowls, it was also important natural habitat and a lovely area of parkland with a big, shady loop of Enoggera Creek. “We are asking locals to step up and get to know the plants and animals in this part
of the creek and help us clean up by collecting rubbish or weeding and cutting vines,” John said. SOWN will be collecting all rubbish items with a special focus on microrubbish items, such as bottle tops, straws and small pieces of plastic. “ We n e e d r u b b i s h collectors with a keen eye who are ready to venture into the bushy areas to do a really thorough job of finding all the rubbish from the large to the very small,” John said. Interested volunteers should go to the end of Yoku Road, turn into the Ashgrove Sports Ground and park beside the Ashgrove Bowls Club. Look out for the SOWN tent and banner near the footbridge.

Clean Up Australia Day 2020 - Step Up! Clean Up Australia inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve our environment. What was started thirty years ago, by an “average Australian bloke” has now become the nation’s largest community-based environmental events. It is hard to believe that this initiative began as the inspiration of one man, Ian Kiernan. An avid sailor, Ian was shocked and disgusted by the pollution and rubbish that he continually encountered in the oceans of the world. Taking matters into his own hands, Ian organised a community event with the support of a committee of friends, including co-founder Kim McKay AO.
This simple idea ignited an enthusiasm and desire among the local community to get involved and make a difference. And surely if a capital city could be mobilised into action, then so could the whole nation! And so it was that Clean Up Australia Day was born in 1990. Of course, Australia’s waste challenges can’t be solved in just one day, so over the past three decades, Clean Up Australia has evolved into an organisation that works with community, government and businesses to provide practical solutions to help us all live more sustainably every day of the year. Today our focus is as much on preventing rubbish entering our environment as it is removing what has already
website: http://www.westernecho.com.au
accumulated. Creating a Clean Up is a great way to make a difference for our environment. You can register as an individual, community group, business or school. All you have to do is go through the registration process and we will send you a free Clean Up Kit including bags, gloves, information and promotional materials. Step 1 - Choose a spot near you that you think needs a clean up. Great choices include beaches, parks, bushland, rivers and more. Make sure your location is safe and accessible and that you have a plan to dispose of the rubbish after the event. Step 2 - Complete the steps to register your clean up location online. You can sign
up as an individual, family, friends, business, local group, school and more! Make sure you leave two weeks between registering and your event day so we have time to post your kit to you Step 3 - Spread the word about your event and get ready to make a difference! You can invite volunteers, share to social media and more to get people involved in your event. Make sure you read through all your kit paperwork and safety information to ensure it’s a great day for everyone involved. The last step? Have fun and get out there to make a difference for our environment. Visit www.cleanup.org.au

Brisbane Tramway Museum Society For the museum, 2020 got away to a great start – our new attraction is fully operational!! Our tram simulator is now installed in our ticket office/shop where it is easily accessed by kids of all ages who wish to ‘drive a tram’. Based on a ‘Drop Centre’ design (which trams were built from about 1928 to 1938), the simulator features a genuine controller and handbrake from trams of
Including The Ferny Grove Men’s Shed that vintage, together with the bells etc that those trams were equipped with. At present, the tram ‘travels’ our own track only, but we are considering options for longer routes. Meanwhile our restoration programs and maintenance programs continue. Currently, we are restoring a 1915 Dreadnought class tram and a trolley bus from the 1950 era. We are also
Enoggera & Districts Historical Society Inc. The first month of the new decade has past, the recess period is over. Now we are ready to do what we do best; present the 170 plus years of European settlement of all that is between Newmarket and Upper Kedron. Will this present decade have the impact that the roaring twenties had on the 20th century? I will never know. EDHS opens its research centre every Thursday between 9am-1pm. The facility is located in Enoggera Memorial Hall; itself an integral part of our district’s history for most of the past one hundred years. Historian, student or just nostalgic; come on in, we welcome you all. Thursday morning not suitable?; No worries; other times can be arranged. Our local history publications are all still available as are limited numbers of our 2020 calendar; a project that has been fastidiously prepared for almost a decade by our research officer/archivist, Merle Heiner who fills each page with the old alongside the new. Check out our website and our facebook page; if you like what you see, come and visit us or better still, become a member; we are a friendly and efficient team that could do with fresh ideas and new blood; enjoy being a part of it. As always, however, we are short of qualified tradesmen, particularly fitters and turners, electricians and electrical fitters and people who can work with light metal. New members are always welcome. This month, another of our gardens will be the focus of a planting session by The Men of The Trees – another local not-for-profit organisation specialising in promoting the planting of species which were native to our area when it was first settled. The first garden they planted is thriving! Another on-going project involves assisting the local cricket club with a few small jobs. The museum opens on Sundays from 12.30 pm to
