Thank you for being part of our audience and community of support for the performing arts at Westminster! Our students and faculty devote countless hours and seemingly boundless energy to preparation, planning, rehearsal, and now, finally, performance. The talent you will see on display has been honed through many hours of instruction and practice. Our students bring their gifts and our faculty bring their insight and experience to create an incredible team effort. As members of the audience, we are the beneficiaries of this collaboration and are truly blessed to see these young performers make important steps forward almost daily. We owe our gratitude not only to our faculty and instructors but also to the many volunteers who work behind the scenes in support roles, and to our staff who prepare our spaces for these performances. I hope that you enjoy this performance and see in it both the results of all of this hard work but also the limitless potential of our students and the performing arts at Westminster. We are delighted you are here and welcome you to this performance! Best Wishes, Keith Evans President

Bands as they become more experienced and proficient musicians. As students advance to the Upper School, they have the opportunity to perform in Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble. Additionally, musical offerings are available in jazz, chamber music, samba, percussion ensemble, pep band, and the Westminster Summer Concert Band, a community ensemble.
The mission of the Westminster Band program is to provide a positive musical, educational, and social experience through the rehearsal and performance of high quality music for winds and percussion. The various ensembles are an integral part of campus culture, performing at concerts and events throughout the school year. A substantive music education through performance in winds and percussion develops aesthetic sensitivity, cultivates a creative outlet, fosters listening skills, develops cultural sensitivity, and addresses cognitive, affective, and kinesthetic learning modes simultaneously. Research suggests that music education can help students excel in other academic areas other than music, including language, spatial reasoning, mathematics, and problem solving. Ancillary benefits of arts training include mastery in individual, small, and large groups; prolonged attention span, camaraderie, and community.
Symphonic Band Wind Ensemble
Individualized and small group instruction are augmented by part-time faculty who specialize in instrumental pedagogy and performance, and who are deeply connected to the Atlanta music community. Wind and percussion students regularly participate in GMEA District and AllState ensembles, as well as the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony, Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Metropolitan Youth Wind Ensemble, Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra,, the Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, and local university music festivals. The Band program strives to surround its students with composers, conductors, soloists, ensembles, and musical scholars of renown, cultivating a lifelong love of music through performance.
The Fifth Grade and Middle School Beginning Bands are for students who have limited or no playing experience. Students then progress through the Middle School Intermediate, Advanced, and Concert

the “Music of the Season” concert. During the spring semester there are three more concerts: one with orchestra, which features a masterwork for chorus and orchestra, a service for Holy Week, a collaborative concert featuring all Westminster choirs, and a day-long service project in which they sing in assisted living communities, day shelters, churches, and prisons in and around Atlanta. Most of these choristers have been singing since their earliest school days and many study voice privately with area teachers. Their experience in this communal activity helps influence a lifetime of appreciation for the arts.
The Upper School curriculum features two large choruses, one for Ninth and Tenth graders, the other (called the “Chorale”) for Juniors and Seniors. Both choirs learn diverse and demanding repertoire spanning a wide range of musical styles. Members of the groups are trained in vocal technique, music theory, and sight-singing. No audition is required to participate. In the fall of each year, the choirs go on a singing “retreat” to Callaway Gardens. They sing at Christ the King Catholic Church – in worship and in concert. During the holiday season they are featured in Handel’s Messiah with the Chamber Orchestra, an annual tradition of great excitement in the community, and in

Cast and Synopsis Act I Prologue: 1815, Digne
Jean Valjean is released on parole after 19 years on the chain gang. Upon his release, he finds that he must carry a yellow ticket-of-leave which condemns him to be an outcast. Only the saintly Bishop of Digne treats him kindly and Valjean, embittered by years of hardship, repays him by stealing some silver. Valjean is caught and brought back by police. However, he is astonished when the Bishop lies to the police to save him, also giving him two precious candlesticks. Valjean decides to start his life anew. Wardens

Desperate for money to pay for medicine for her daughter, Fantine sells her hair and then joins a group of lovely ladies. Utterly degraded by her new trade, she gets into a fight with a prospective customer and is about to be taken to prison by Javert when “The Mayor” arrives and demands she be taken to a hospital instead. The Mayor then rescues a man pinned down by a vending cart. Javert is reminded of the abnormal strength of convict 24601 Jean Valjean, a parolebreaker whom he has been tracking for years. Javert explains to The Mayor that a man he believes to be the escaped convict has just been captured. Jean Valjean, unable to see an innocent man go to prison in his place, confesses to the court that he is prisoner 24601. At the hospital, Valjean promises the dying Fantine to find and look after her daughter, Cosette. Javert arrives to arrest him, but Valjean escapes. Sailors/Soldiers

1832: Paris
Nine years later there is a great unrest in the city because of the likely demise of the popular leader General Lamarque, the only man left in the government who shows any feeling for the poor. The urchin Gavroche is in his element mixing with the beggars of Paris. Among the street gangs is one led by Thénardier and his wife, which sets upon Jean Valjean and Cosette. They are rescued by Javert, who does not recognize Valjean until after he has made his escape. The Thénardiers’ daughter, Eponine, now grown up, is secretly in love with the student Marius. At a political meeting in a small café, a group of idealistic students prepares for a revolution, which they are sure will erupt upon the death of General Lamarque. Cosette is consumed by thoughts of Marius, with whom she has fallen in love. Valjean realizes that his “daughter” is changing very quickly but refuses to tell her anything of her past. In spite of her own feelings for Marius, Eponine sadly brings him to Cosette and then prevents an attempt by her father’s gang to rob Valjean’s house. Valjean, convinced it was Javert who was lurking outside his house, tells Cosette they must prepare to flee the country. On the eve of the revolution, the students and Javert see the situation from their different viewpoints; Eponine mourns the loss of Marius, and Valjean looks forward to the security of exile. The Thénardiers, meanwhile, dream of rich pickings underground from the chaos to come.

The students prepare to build the barricade. Marius, noticing that Eponine has joined the insurrection, sends her with a letter to Cosette, which is intercepted at the Rue Plumet by Valjean. Eponine decides, despite what he has said to her, to rejoin Marius at the barricade. The barricade is built and the revolutionaries defy an army warning that they must give up or die. Gavroche exposes Javert as a police spy. In trying to return to the barricade, Eponine is shot and killed. Valjean arrives at the barricade in search of Marius. He is given the chance to kill Javert but instead lets him go. Army Officers

The students settle down for a night on the barricade and, in the quiet of the night, Valjean prays to God to save Marius from the onslaught which is to come. The next day, with ammunition running low, Gavroche runs out to collect more and is shot. The rebels are killed, including their leader Enjolras. Valjean escapes into the sewers with the unconscious Marius. After meeting Thénardier, who is robbing the corpses of the rebels, he emerges into the light only to meet Javert once more. He pleads for time to deliver the young man to a hospital. Javert decides to let him go and his unbending principles of justice are shattered by Valjean’s own mercy. Ashamed, Javert throws himself into the swollen River Seine. Mourners

A number of Parisian women come to terms with the failed insurrection and its victims. Unaware of the identity of his rescuer, Marius recovers in Cosette’s care. Valjean confesses the truth of his past to Marius and insists that after the young couple are married, he must go away rather than taint the sanctity and 53
safety of their union. At Marius and Cosette’s wedding, the Thénardiers try to blackmail Marius. Thénardier says Cosette’s “father” is a murderer and, as proof, produces a ring which he stole from the corpse in the sewers the night the barricades fell. It is Marius’ own ring, and it is then that he realizes it was Valjean who rescued him that night. They go to Valjean, where Cosette learns the truth of her past. As Valjean dies, he joins the spirits of Fantine, Eponine, and all those who died on the barricades.

younger colleagues on stage to perform familiar repertoire of all styles and varieties. The Ensemble also has an annual concert tour during spring break; within the last few years, they have appeared in Prague, Rome, Florence, Berlin, Vienna, London, and Paris. One year they may be guests of the American Ambassador to Slovakia; the next may find them singing in Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris. This year’s spring trip will take them to Spain, where they will visit musical and artistic destinations in Madrid and Barcelona. Ensemble
The Westminster Ensemble is a group of twenty singers, divided between Sophomores, Juniors, and Seniors. Ensemble is an auditioned chorus, which performs sacred music from the Renaissance to the present, as well as more contemporary music, which might draw influence from Gregorian chant, Appalachian folk tunes, African-American spirituals, American musical theater, or other popular repertoire. December’s “Reunion Concert” is a much-loved Westminster tradition, and members of past Ensembles join their

The friendships that grow out of these groups are long-lasting, and it is no surprise to hear these groups singing for alumni weddings, homecoming games, the “Pigskin Picnic,” and other social occasions. Other on-campus singing events for the a cappella groups include the “Music of the Seasons” concert, the Ensemble Reunion concert, and the spring concert, as well as two Upper School assemblies devoted entirely to their music-making.
The popular collegiate tradition of a cappella group singing has taken root at Westminster and has been a part of the School's musical scene for many years. All Upper School singers are invited to audition for the a cappella groups (one for women, one for men), and there are numerous appearances on and off campus during the school year. The groups are student-led and have always enjoyed sensational reviews from fellow students, faculty members, and parents.

If you have questions about Dance Corps, please contact Carly Pansulla (Upper School faculty advisor). We look forward to seeing you at our annual Dance Corps Dance Concert April 20, 2017 at 7p.m.!
The Westminster Dance Corps is a studentled community of dancers that was established on campus in 2007. Students have the opportunity to collaborate and create choreography with other students, experience rehearsals with guest artists, take and teach classes in a variety of styles, workshop their choreography, and attend concerts. The Annual Dance Concert features student and guest choreography in a variety of styles from both Middle and Upper School students, including the Upper School dance crew, Cloud9. Georgia ASTA Chamber Music Workshop (11 students participated in 2013) and the Fischoff National Chamber Music Competition.
The Westminster Orchestra Program, recognized by former Atlanta Journal Constitution classical music critic Derrick Henry as "one of the most distinguished [string programs] in the country” was established in 1981 by Peg Neuen. The program consists of five performing groups offering musical opportunities for students at all age levels. At the Lower School level, the Allegro Orchestra serves beginning students in grades three through five and the Presto Orchestra intermediate students in those grades. Middle School students have the opportunity to participate in either the Prelude Orchestra String Class or the Junior Chamber Orchestra. Upper School students perform in the Chamber Orchestra.
Individuals within the orchestras have excelled as well. Last season, members of the Westminster Orchestra program performed in the Atlanta Symphony Youth Orchestra, Emory Youth Symphony Orchestra, Georgia Youth Symphony Orchestra, Emory Junior Chamber Orchestra and Metropolitan Youth Symphony Orchestra. Students also participated in Franklin Pond, Fall Into Spring, and the Emory Youth Chamber Music Program. The following orchestra students represented Westminster in the 2017 GMEA All-State Orchestras: Middle School Orchestras – Naheun Kim, Alexander Lee, Toby Liu, Andrew Mao, Ashwin Pillai, Anand Srinivasan, Olivia Velanova, Anastasia Waid; 9-10 Orchestras – Kevin Chen, Christina Huang, Mimi Konieczny, Tara PIllai, Zhimei Xu; 11-12 Orchestra – Joe Billips, Christine Liu, Phoebe Liu. Westminster hosts the final auditions for the GMEA AllState Orchestras annually in January.
Unique to the orchestra program is the chamber music component; all members of the Presto, Prelude, Junior Chamber, and Chamber Orchestras participate in chamber music ensembles. Presto Orchestra chamber music ensembles perform a recital in February. Middle School ensembles perform two Coffee Concerts in the Kellett Theatre of the Broyles Arts Center. Chamber Orchestra ensembles are featured during the Fall Coffee Concert in November and another Tea Concert in April in honor of graduating seniors. Westminster chamber music groups have represented at the

Among the highlights of the 2016-17 season was the trip to the Carlos Music to view Shakespeare's First Folio and to perform music of Shakespeare's time. The Westminster orchestra members are looking forward to an exciting 2017-2018 season. 64

Society – an honor society recognizing excellence in theatre studies. They also attend the Georgia Thespian Conference in Columbus and participate in the Tech Challenge; where individual and team skills are tested in the areas of lighting, sound, costumes and stagecraft. Students are encouraged to explore all aspects of theatre both onstage and backstage. This well-rounded experience prepares them for potentially continuing their theatre studies at the collegiate level.
The Westminster Technical Crew offers students an opportunity to get involved behind-the-scenes on all Westminster Players and Dance Corps productions. The crew strives to make each production in Kellett Theatre and McCain Chapel run as smoothly and seamlessly as possible.
