HOTTEST WINE CATEGORY:

RED BLENDS

HOTTEST WINE CATEGORY: RED BLENDS If you were to ask people in the wine business, “what is the hottest wine

category, today”, they would all agree that it’s red blends. What began years ago

with a wine made by Folie a Deux, called

“Menage a Trois”, a red blend that featured three grape varietals, has now become a category of its own.

In most cases, the blending of different varietals is designed to create a wine

that appeals to everyone. These wines can

be enjoyed with or without food. We’d like to feature a few new arrivals with great

stories to tell, that are made by both large & small wineries from California.

Deerfield Ranch Red Rex Sonoma County, CA Winemaker Robert Rex created this incredible red blend using 7 different varietals (yes, I said 7). On the nose, this wine is sweet and aromatic, with balanced aromas of Bing cherry, blackberry, blueberry jam, sweet spice, sweet tobacco leaf, cherry candy and a hint of cracked pepper.

Stringer Cellars “Metal Bender” Red Blend Various California AVA’s Stringer, “Metal Bender” Red – Various California AVA’s Owner, winemaker Casey Stringer named this wine Metal Bender to honor his family’s metal fabricating business in Wisconsin. They are true metal benders. This wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet, 20% Petite Sirah and 10% Syrah, sourced from various AVA’s in Rutherford, Napa & Sonoma Counties. Blackberry, dark cherry and chocolate flavors with good balance of fruit and acidity.

Murrieta’s Well “The Spur” Red Livermore Valley, CA

Crafted from blending the classic Bordeaux varietals with Petite Sirah, which offers a distinctively California expression. Each varietal is farmed, harvested, and handcrafted individually to achieve their greatest expression prior to assembling the final blend. The varietals include 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Petite Sirah, 13% Merlot, 9% Petit Verdot Provides an aromatic profile of spiced cranberry, blueberry and clove with complementary notes of graham cracker and ripe blackberry.

Angels & Cowboys, Red Various California AVA’s Crafted with fruit sourced from some of Sonoma County’s most prestigious growers in Carneros, Russian River Valley, and Dry Creek Valley. Richly concentrated, juicy and dense with ripe dark cherry, accentuated by nuances of warm spice and dark chocolate. A lengthy, generous, decadent finish.

B. Wise, “Wisdom” Red Sonoma Valley, Ca

Shows ripe black cherry and black raspberry fruits with touches of sage, white pepper and mineral. Vanilla and warm oak notes accent the supple tannins. The pleasing finish is soft and caressing. Easy drinking for any occasion. Blend: 36% Zinfandel, 38% Cabernet Sauvignon, 11% Syrah, 9% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot, 3% Cabernet Franc.

WINE TRENDS FOR SUMMER 2021

Hosting summer festivities at your house this year? Or spending the day at someone else’s home, and looking for a bottle of wine to bring over? The following are 5 wine trends to know and the best labels to buy when entertaining in Summer 2021.

1

Every event should have a sparkling wine

We recommend: Syltbar Prosecco

Notes of pear, golden apple, white peach and lemon. Enjoy in a white wine glass instead of a flute to enhance the flavor. Ideal serving temperature: 45-49 °F.

2

Blush Wines

We recommend:

David Frost Pinotage Blush South Africa

With a brilliant red colour slightly amber with time,

exuberant in its fragrance of fruit and spices.

The tannic characteristics

guarantee a long final taste of coudron and spices.

3

Sancerre We recommend:

Lebrun-Foucher “Le Mont” Sancerre Loire Valley, France

Complex bouquet of gooseberry, lime peel, smoke, fresh-cut grass, a good base of soil and a top note of citrus zest. On the palate, the wine is crisp, full-bodied and focused, with a good core, fine transparency and a long, tasty finish.
