Let it Snow! Let it Snow! (but watch your back as you go…) I remember working as a physical therapist in a hospital setting years ago, and sure enough, every winter we would see an influx of patients with winterrelated injuries. Slips and falls on the ice and snowshoveling back strains were two of the most common winter- related ailments.

• If you are lifting the snow, bend your knees to let the large muscles of the legs do the work, not your back. • Finally, take frequent breaks to take the strain off of your muscles. A fatigued body asks for injury. If you do happen to experience a back pain, a physical therapist can help to evaluate the problem, provide helpful treatment make specific recommendations to help avoid re-injury down the road.

Low back pain is often the most common diagnosis seen in many physical therapy clinics. What exactly is the low back? The low back, or lumbar spine consists of five vertebral bones, stacked up upon one another, intervertebral discs, multiple ligaments and muscles and many nerves in the area.

If you are experiencing pain or dysfunction in any of your muscles or joints, please call Action Therapy Clinic at 814.238.8800 to set up a free initial 30 minute consultation. Action Therapy Clinic is located at 620 West Cherry Lane in State College, PA 16803. We participate with most health insurance plans and because we are a direct access provider, you do not need a physician referral to make an appointment. Find out more by visiting our website at www.actiontherapyclinic.com

Now that winter is almost upon us, it is a good time to discuss ways that the snow shoveler can protect the back and minimize the chance of a back injury. • First, wearing warm layered clothing can help to keep the muscles warm and flexible. • When you do shovel, push the snow straight ahead if possible, avoiding the lift, throw and twist that can contribute to adverse stress on the low back.

Show Me the Clinical Trial! We need better research, especially for early stage breast cancer where chemotherapy may or may not have any benefit. So I urge patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer, to ask questions about every test and every treatment to make certain it feels right for them. Be informed and ask; show me the clinical trial?

When we by a used car it is common practice to know the background of that car before closing the deal. I would think dealing with breast cancer would be a much more important decision, yet the question is seldom asked. Show me the clinical trial? The costs both in dollars and health are far too high to make decisions about breast cancer blindly. Patients should look for sound science and not the art of medicine to make these decisions.

David Arbutina, MD, FACS is a governor of the American College of Surgeons and the current President of its Keystone Chapter. His surgical practice has been focused on breast cancer since 1988 and he has been involved in research and education about this topic for 24 years.

To begin, the patient must first decide if she really wants to have the barrage of tests which are now available. Some gene tests on cancer cells cost $5,000 and have only been tested by the companies which developed them. There are no clinical trials or checks to verify these tests but today they are ordered routinely and life altering treatments are based on the results. Some cancer centers order MRI’s on every patient who presents with breast cancer. There is no good science behind this and to the contrary there is a study which shows using a breast MRI in this case is of no clinical benefit. This is another $1,000 test to add to the bill. Breast cancer therapy can be a very difficult alternative to choose. The price tag can be well over $100,000 per patient. Here is wear the patient needs to ask to see the clinical trials. These trials should be double blind, randomized and contain enough patients being treated to be statistically sound. Unfortunately, there are no longer good controlled trials for breast cancer chemotherapy. Therefore, before a patient makes the choice to get a very potent and sometimes toxic therapy, they should ask the question, where is the clinical trial that shows how this therapy improves survival over those patients who opt out? Don’t be fooled by numbers. Just because a cancer center has a large data base full of numbers, does not mean that they have done the clinical trials. What it means is that they have treated many patients and see trends but this is not science. The bias in such data banks is inherent! When it all comes down to making the final decision, the patient may not be able to pinpoint any clinical trial for the therapy which they are being offered. At this point the patient is informed and can make a decision which is not necessarily based on science, but knowing this they can make their choice. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Elder Law

I Will Never Put My…In a Nursing Home By: Tammy Zilske, Long-Term Care Planner

7. Contact an elder law attorney about available benefits – Navigating the system can be overwhelming and confusing. There are a variety of benefits available to help care for a loved one in the community and to pay for nursing home care. An experienced elder law attorney will be knowledgeable about these benefits and can assist you in developing a plan to meet your needs. 8. Use a nursing home when it is needed – Nursing homes are there to help you care for your loved one. If you cannot emotionally or physically continue to provide care, use a nursing home. There is a reason the nursing home staffs 3 shifts. When nursing home care is needed, you can change your role back to spouse or child instead of caregiver. We are here to help you no matter where you are in the caregiving journey. At Steinbacher & Stahl, we have attorneys and planners who understand your needs and can help you understand the services and benefits available to you. We offer FREE initial consultations so there is nothing to lose by meeting with us. Call Steinbacher & Stahl today to schedule your FREE consultation.

Never make a promise you cannot keep. I always cringe when I hear someone say, “I will never put my…(spouse, father, mother) in a nursing home.” Sure, it is ideal to think that we can provide the needed care that our loved ones require, but we also have to be realistic. Whether you are providing 24 hour care or helping a few hours a week, caregiving is a very challenging task. If your desire is to keep your loved ones safe and meet their needs, follow these simple steps in order to make your efforts a success. 1. Make a list of your loved one’s daily and weekly needs – Prepare a plan of how these needs will be met. For example, if your loved one needs help with medication management, you should set up a pill planner each week and then make a reminder call to them when they should take the medications. 2. Don’t assume total dependence – One of the biggest mistakes caregivers make is assuming their loved one cannot do anything on his or her own. If your loved one can tie his own shoes, let him. Remember when the kids were little, and you thought it would be easier to do the task yourself rather than wait for them to do it? Yes, it does take patience, but give your loved one the dignity of being as independent as possible. 3. Don’t be a martyr – Use available community services. Most health insurances provide short-term in-home skilled care, such as nursing, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and home health aides. In addition, there are local agencies that provide long-term in-home services to aid caregivers in providing care. The Steinbacher & Stahl Resource Center has extensive information on community services for those who have disabilities. 4. Accept the offer of help – When family members and friends offer to help, take them up on it. It not only helps you, but it also makes them feel good that they can do something. 5. Plan a break – In order for caregivers not to burn out, they must plan a break from care. This should be scheduled weekly, maybe an afternoon off or a whole day. Taking a week off once in a while is also a great idea. Some non-skilled caregiving agencies provide 24-hour respite. In addition, assisted living facilities and nursing homes welcome short-term respite admissions. 6. Remember to have fun – It can be emotionally difficult for loved ones to rely on others to meet their needs. They may feel guilty and frustrated about their inability to meet their own needs. It is important to find things they can do that are enjoyable. For example, take them to the mall to go shopping, go out to lunch, play a game, etc. January / February 2013

Ask the Nutritionist with Monica and Angie from BeWell Associates Dear BeWell, I have chronic diarrhea and the doctors tell me I have IBS but nothing has helped. What would you suggest? — RJ, Altoona, PA

Dear RJ, There are many things that can cause chronic diarrhea. We take a careful health history to determine when the symptoms began; sometimes there is a correlation between travel, camping, a visit to a hospital or other situations where infections can be picked up, or can occur after a series of antibiotics. Try this yourself: • Experiment with stopping gluten and/or dairy • Add probiotics — make sure you get this from the refrigerated section of your health food store and keep it cold at home. If there is no improvement I would recommend making an appointment with BeWell to investigate further. We would perhaps use the GI Effects Test to identify hidden infections (bacterial, fungal or parasitic) and/or enzyme deficiencies. BeWell can help you: • Test for hidden infections • Choose the right enzymes to aid digestion • Further investigate food sensitivities. • Create a customized eating plan to improve digestion. Dear BeWell, I’m 35, feel sluggish, have acne for the first time in my life and I want to lose ten pounds. Where do we start? — AB, Bellefonte, PA

Dear AB, You are an ideal candidate for our Liver Detoxification Program. A clean liver burns fat more effectively and a clean liver means clear skin.

I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Try this yourself: Replace your morning coffee/tea with a cup of warm/hot water with 1 ⁄4 – 1 ⁄2 fresh lemon squeezed into it and a pinch of cayenne. Your liver will love you for it! Be Well can help you: Follow our liver Detoxification Program. This four-week program supplies two nutritious shakes each day and allows unlimited fruits, vegetable and proteins. We also provide a weekly ionizing foot bath to enhance your results. Dear BeWell, I have been struggling with anxiety for the past few years and I don’t want to become addicted to the medications that have been suggested. Can BeWell help me? — DG, State College, PA

Dear DG, Anxiety is a multi-faceted condition and could be caused by a number of factors. Be Well can help you: Evaluate your brain chemistry and adrenal health, which often effects mood, through a test called the TRIAD. This test also evaluates hidden food allergies, as well as many other metabolic functions that would effect the body-mind. Be Well also offers: Therapeutic Massage, Life Coaching, and Integrative Psychiatry are additional modalities to work with the underlying triggers for anxiety, while the biochemical aspect is being investigated and balanced.

A New Procedure for Hammertoes is Something to Smile About!

January/ February 2013

As many as 60 million Americans suffer from hammertoes, a bending of the toe that is unsightly and often painful. Hammertoes are more common among women due to their tendency to wear tight, narrow shoes but the condition affects men as well. The median age of hammertoe sufferers is 52 – by which time they likely have logged 75,000 miles on their feet. Are you physically fatigued or mentally sluggish? Are you irritable and restless? Do you have a metallic taste in your mouth? If so, Hands in Health can help. You may be deficient in iodine, which is an essential nutrient. Iodine is critical for health, and it needs to be consumed regularly since your body cannot make it on its own. Essential iodine supplies are concentrated in the ocean’s supply of kelp, sea salt, and fish. Many functions in the body rely on sufficient iodine supplies. These functions include energy production, mental development, production of thyroid hormones, reproductive gland support, a strong lymph system, and control of cell growth. Small amounts of iodine are found in the blood, nerves, and other organs, but most of the body’s iodine is present in the thyroid, breasts, ovaries, uterus, and prostate. Iodine is a mineral that activates and is stored in the thyroid gland to help control your metabolic rate. Do you want to lose weight? Iodine aids in the digestion of complex carbohydrates and in the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus. Iodine also helps to prevent abnormal tissue formation and growth such as goiter formation, fibrocystic breasts, enlarged prostate and most importantly, cancer. Substantial levels of iodine are very beneficial to health building and health maintenance. Increasing iodine will have direct positive results of improved function and assist in the release of toxins. It is best to consume iodine through whole food sources and from sea salt. However, not all food is grown in iodine rich soil. Therefore in today’s society, it is important to take iodine supplements on a regular basis. At our office we have a variety

1. Protect equipment. Install and update antivirus software, spyware protection and firewalls. 2. Realize social networking sites are here to stay. Review your child’s Facebook and Twitter profiles. Make sure they do not display personal information such as full names, addresses or school names. You can also utilize privacy settings to protect their photos, location information and school. 3. Boost password strength. Utilize a mixture of letters, numbers and characters. Change them early and often, and most importantly, never share passwords with anyone. 4. Maintain an open dialogue with family, friends and your community concerning internet safety. 5. Report suspicions cyber activity. This is the simple method of protection, but it is the one often forgotten. If an online offer, email or software download seems too good to be true, that because it probably is; contact www.onguardonline.gov for more information.

We live in a very exciting era of technological progression; loved ones can be messaged from the palm of our hands, internet can be accessed virtually from anywhere and mainstream commerce has become increasingly digital. This past October marked the 8th Annual National Cyber Security Awareness month, calling attention to persistent cyber-related risks like online identity theft, cyber bullying, viruses and destructive Malware.

It’s a reality we face in today that many children do not recognize the abundance of threats awaiting them, nor do they recognize a tweet or photo upload can impact not only their reputation and future, but their security, as well. Just last spring, Microsoft Corporation released research indicating that over 55 percent of children and teens acknowledge they give little or no thought to the consequences of “posting” something online. To further this technological dilemma, a separate research survey indicated 1 in 4 parents are “overwhelmed” by technology and hope their children’s decisions are for the best.

Cyber security is a moving target, and as threats develop daily, it is important for parents to play an active role in educating youth about the facts, the risks and the ways to improve the safety of the online experience. Through informing ourselves and our community, we can champion this growing issue.

Give your family the gift of Advanced Care Planning. Advanced Care Planning, discussion and documentation of how you want critical medical issues to be handled, is a unique gift you can give your family. Talking about these issues may not feel comfortable, but knowledge about the medical quality of life you desire will enable a loved one to confidently express those wishes if you are unable to. That information can bring comfort during a stressful time – especially if family members are in conflict about what to do. “Unless you outline the care you want, healthcare providers will take every measure to extend your life. This may not be agreeable if you are more interested in quality of life versus quantity of life,” explains

Anne Holladay, Nursing Home Administrator at Susquehanna Health’s Muncy Valley Hospital. Appointing a healthcare surrogate, a family member or close friend to represent you, is the most important

step. Discuss your wishes so that person understands the outcome you want. You can also formalize your wishes in a legal document called Advanced Directives. “Rather than addressing specific procedures, think in terms of the level of living that’s okay with you,” says Dr. Alexander Nesbitt, Medical Director, Susquehanna Health Home Care and Hospice. “It is very individual. You might want every measure taken so long as you are still breathing, you might be content if bedridden but able to communicate, or you might not be content if you could no longer ride a motorcycle.” The New Year is a great time for families to discuss Advance Care Planning. Speak about it in terms

of the future and wanting your loved ones to know what you want if you can’t speak for yourself and vice versa. “Making a decision about end-of-life care without knowing what a loved one truly wants can be a tremendous, lasting burden,” says Dr. Nesbitt. “Knowing how you feel can ease the burden and help them be more certain they are making the right choices for you.” For more information about Susquehanna Health Skilled Nursing Unit, please call (570) 546-4040 or for information about Susquehanna Health Home Care & Hospice please call, (570) 320-7690.

Reconstructive surgery helps breast cancer patients look to the future. Breast reconstruction can help a breast cancer survivor feel better about her body and her femininity. Unfortunately, only one out of five women diagnosed with breast cancer is told that it’s an option. At Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center, women are not only informed about reconstructive options, Dr. Nathalie Lavallee, a plastic surgeon offering breast reconstruction, has her office there. The location makes it convenient for patients, particularly those coming from out of town because they can schedule an appointment with their breast surgeon and

SHH-0004_Advertorial_WomensJournal_Jan-2012_fin.indd 1

January / February 2013

Dr. Lavallee for the same day. “We have built a relationship with Dr. Lavallee over the past three years and have confidence in her abilities and the way she cares for our patients,” says Dr. Linda Myers, a surgeon at the Breast Health Center. “With her physically in our center, it’s easier for her to consult with our patients at any time. We have improved communication and can more easily coordinate care for our patients.” Dr. Lavallee’s involvement with patients helps them look beyond their disease and toward the future. “The surgeons are trying to treat the patient’s cancer; I am there to

make her look good, and most of the time, even better than she did before. So, my interaction with her is very different and can have a positive effect at a critical time in her life,” explains Dr. Lavallee. She takes her time to educate and discuss options with breast cancer patients and their families, and notes that patients have very high expectations, which she works hard to meet. “I am constantly attending training sessions and learning new techniques so I can offer the very best options,” she says.

In addition to breast reconstruction, Dr. Lavallee performs a wide array of other plastic surgeries. To learn more, contact Susquehanna Health Plastic & Reconstructive Surgery at 570-326-8005 or visit www.SusquehannaHealth.org.

Real Estate

Tis the Season While the holiday season fades into our collective past, and the new year begins to develop, it is a good time to remember that “tis the season” to make plans for a year of positive growth and development. In the world of real estate it has been a few years since we have looked forward to the coming season with the enthusiasm and optimism that we feel is warranted for 2013. Last year ended with some very positive numbers and trends, basically the good numbers improving, and the bad ones decreasing. Inventories are healthy but not overly so, lending is getting better and the general economic picture for many is on the way up. Some experts have indicated that the housing market will be one of the major pillars on which a new, revived economy will be built. What does that mean for you and me? If you are not going to be involved in real estate, feel free to turn the page. However, if you are shrewd enough to take advantage of some excellent conditions you want to use the next couple of months to put yourself in a fine position to reap the benefits of real estate. Prices should remain affordable, interest rates should still be low (although they may begin to rise as the year progresses) and with lending becoming friendlier it could be an exceptional time to purchase. With renewed interest and activity it will also be a good time to sell, if you have done your homework and prepared your property in terms of condition and pricing. There are many factors to consider when dealing with real estate, so I

encourage you to talk with your favorite local Realtor during these winter months and start to develop a solid, realistic game plan for the coming year. “Tis the season” to lay the foundation for a good new year in 2013. Please call or email me if you want to talk about your situation in more detail.

What Does Participating Really Mean? Now….that same generous insurance company offers plans to employers, employers who are trying to provide their employees with insurance. If they pick a plan covering 80% of that “Usual and Customary” fee, United Concordia charges the employer more in premiums that if they pick a plan that covers 50%. So most companies do the best they can. Now they say go to a dentist that participates. If a dentist participates, they have to accept that “Usual and customary fee.” Any dentist office though, unless they were able to negotiate the fee a little higher, cannot afford to operate with any type of 1.quality materials, 2.state of the art technology, 3. exceptionally trained dentist, or 4.highly skilled staff. The bills in an office such as this cannot be paid if the dentist accepts a fee lower than “Usual and Customary”. The insurance company will make it seem that the dental office is selfish or greedy for not participating, or accepting that lower fee. However, it is the insurance company who is looking to make money on the patient by not paying what is “Usual and Customary,” or by gouging employers and making it too expensive for 80 or 100% coverage. So participation basically means, our office can’t afford to offer Velscope (oral cancer screening exams), diagnodent (laser cavity screening exams), intraoral photos, or 60 minute cleanings. All of which cost $105.00, the fee of which we basically waive. If you come to our office and have United Concordia, you may pay an extra $14.00, but you are getting $105.00 of services free. We couldn’t do any of these additional services if we accepted that lower than average fee; no oral cancer screenings, no diagnostic photos, and only 30 minute cleanings, which are completely inadequate by ADA standards. So is that really what you want, a dentist that participates? Someone who has to use inferior products or have inferior technology to have an affordable bottom line? Rather, how about going to a dentist whose fees are actually Usual and Customary, not inflated. We can still use your insurance benefits, but we won’t let your insurance dictate your quality of care.

It’s one of the first questions any new patient asks when they call a dental office. “Do you participate with my insurance?” I am sure some of you have asked that question, but do you really know for what

you are asking? There is something called “Usual and Customary”; these are what an industry considers fair market value for a procedure. There is an agreed upon amount, or an average cost, for each dental procedure relative to the area in which you live, basically a fair market value. Insurance companies develop a fee schedule, what they feel is the fair market value for any and all dental procedures, again in a certain area. Fee schedules vary from Centre County to Cambria County, and very vastly from those in Philadelphia County to Orange County, Ca. Here in Centre County they may say an average fee or fair market value for a crown is $700.00, and in Philadelphia it may be $900.00. Sure, the cost of living may be different, but a crown is a crown, a lab bill is a lab bill, a dentist is a dentist (for the most part), cement is cement (for the most part), why do they value a crown in Philadelphia more than that in Centre County…….because they can……because your insurance company doesn’t care about giving you fair coverage for your crown, they care about saving themselves money. Insurance companies make their plans appealing to HR directors by saying they cover white fillings in back teeth. For example, United Concordia, a big insurance in the area, the one PSU uses allows $86.00 dollars for a white filling in the back of the mouth. Sure, they say they “cover posterior fillings.” They are claiming that $86.00 is the usual and customary fee for white fillings. Yet the “Usual and Customary” fee for a white filling in Central Pa through any independent company who evaluates fees, Henry Schein being one of them, says the Usual and Customary fee for a white filling in the back of the mouth is $130.00. Ironically, that $86.00 is what United Concordia “allows” or says is Usual and Customary for an amalgam, or silver filling. The materials needed, techniques required, and dentist’s skill set to place a white filling is 10 to 20 times that which would be required to place a silver filling. So why do they pay the same? Why do they consider these 2 very different procedures to have the same Usual and Customary fee, when they are obviously not the same in cost or time? Because that is $46.00 dollars United Concordia executives put right back in their pockets, and the discrepancies continue on from here, from crowns to dentures. And don’t forget, they don’t have to pay as much for procedures in Centre County as they do in Philadelphia County, more money the insurance company makes. No matter where the area, United Concordia pays less than what the dentist has in lab bills; they cover less for a cleaning than what the dentist has to pay the hygienist. Then the insurance company “generously” offers $1000.00 in dental coverage a year, yes, the same amount that was offered in 1952 when dental insurance started. Inflation hasn’t seemed to have touched dental insurance. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

So, What’s Your Excuse This Week? By Fred Teichman, MD Physically active people are healthier. You know you should be exercising. But it’s always tomorrow that will be the day you start. Sixty percent of American adults don’t get the recommended physical activity while 25% are not active at all. How can you get past all those excuses and start that long overdue exercise program?

R

emember there’s an “exercise for everyone. It doesn’t have to be unpleasant or onerous. You should want to do it and feel good about it.

“I don’t have time. This one is by far the most common excuse. But what you’re really saying is that exercise is not enough of a priority. Just think how much television you watch. Schedule your activity in 10- or 15-minute segments. Make it a habit. It’s essential to find time for things you value. “Exercise is boring. Find an activity you like, be it inside or outside. It just might include skating, dancing, or gardening. Remember there’s an “exercise for everyone. It doesn’t have to be unpleasant or onerous. You should want to do it and feel good about it.

“I’m not seeing any changes in my body yet. Not losing weight fast enough? Welcome to reality. Weight doesn’t come on overnight, so it doesn’t come off that quickly either. Enjoy the other benefits of exercise such as getting more restful sleep, feeling better and more relaxed throughout the day, and having a higher energy level. Positive body changes will soon follow.

“I always end of quitting anyway. Small, attainable goals are the key. What went wrong last time? Review past failures and don’t take the same path. Seek to achieve small successes and avoid big time defeats. How about an activity scheduled for three times per week for the next month? And don’t forget those recovery days. Everything in it’s Place The way we feel and the way we act is affected greatly by the environment which surrounds us. Therefore, by learning how to properly organize what surrounds us, we can improve our lives. By allowing our environment to be randomly organized, we do not take control of how it affects us and this creates an obstacle without even realizing it. The spaces where we live or work should be thoughtfully organized in order to take Jeff Ulmer, Owner the best advantage of them and make them be a help to us rather than an obstacle. As you work toward achieving the organizers dream of a place for everything and everything in it’s place, the order around you will provide an inner calm. Getting control over the stuff in our lives, makes us feel like we have more control over our lives. Having a messy closet should not be a big deal in a full life but there’s something about getting control of our closets that is surprisingly satisfying. Having organized hundreds of closets in the past five years, I have heard this statement from numerous clients after installing an organizer system “I am much more apt to put things away when I have a spot for it” The first step to organizing your closet is to purge. While the task of cleaning your closet may seam overwhelming there are a few simple rules to follow when purging your closet. Start by removing everything from your closet. Try on everything you took out of the closet. If it meets any of the following criteria, give it away: 1) you don't love it, 2) you haven't worn it in more than 1 year or 3) it doesn't fit. If there are items with sentimental value that you cannot part with, reserve them for a special box or storage space that is not included in the same space as your daily wardrobe. By getting rid of your old, unworn clothes, you'll open up space that will attract new clothes you love into your life. Once you have purged your closet, The next step is to arrange your clothes by function, then color. Hang all of your shirts together, pants together, skirts together and dresses together. Then sort each item by function even further. For example, hang all of your long-sleeve dress shirts together, t-shirts together and tank tops together. Finally, arrange each type of clothing item by color. For example, hang all of your white long-sleeve dress shirts together, blue t-shirts together and black tank tops together. With an organizer from Closets Plus, this system of organization is easy to achieve and maintain. The process of January / February 2013

Facebook Evidence in Divorce Once again, I was recently involved in a custody matter in which Facebook played an important role in the outcome of the case. Fortunately, my client, does not have a Facebook page, but the opposing party did, and what was posted, was a veritable treasure-trove of information for my client. Most family lawyers have seen an increase in the use of social media as evidence, with Facebook topping the charts as there are more and more monthly active users. Chances are, your spouse, and the friends and family of your spouse use Facebook. The following are five tips for Facebook use during your divorce. 1. Consider everything you post to be public Consider everything you post on Facebook as public information. Even if you post your page as private, how many mutual friends do you and your spouse have. Will your mutual friends share with your spouse what you have posted? That’s what happened in my case. The opposing party had 438 Facebook friends. Really!? After it was learned that the opposing party’s facebook page was no longer private, the testimony at trial was that there were now 33 Facebook friends. With one click of a button, your photos and comments can spread exponentially until it falls into your spouse’s hands and then into the court file. In addition, a court has the authority to order you to release deleted and private postings to your spouse. 2. Do not post your party photos Flirting with new friends and enjoying a few drinks may be harmless activities as you transition into your single life, but photographic evidence of your partying can be damaging. Even innocent photos can be misconstrued and used against you by your spouse. That’s what was done in our case. Consider also the “tagging” feature on Facebook. Your friend ‘tags’ you in a compromising photo that seemed innocent enough but now your photo is part of how many people’s news feeds? 3. Vent to your friends, not your Facebook page Although your spouse may really have cheated on you or behaved badly in other ways, Facebook is not the appropriate forum to vent your frustrations. Your angry tirades — no matter how justified — can be twisted to your spouse’s advantage. In my most recent case, Facebook tirades made the opposing party look small and vindictive and not willing to work as a co-parent for the child. 4. Resist boasting Along with divorce comes the freedom to buy and do what you want I read it in the Women’s Journal!

without asking your spouse’s permission. However, your purchase of a new boat, car or vacation home may diminish your argument that you cannot afford to pay financial support or that you need your spouse to pay you alimony. Similar to venting, boasting can also make you look small and vindictive. 5. Update your privacy settings Facebook allows you to control how much information you share with the public. However, although updating your Facebook privacy settings can protect you, the adjustment does not guarantee your spouse will not get hold of your postings. Again, consider the effect of mutual friends and well-meaning friends who ‘tag’ you engaging in ‘something fun.’ Do you have more questions? Contact Lance T. 10 Plastic Surgery Myths Debunked. Wants to Hear Your Amazing Stories Dr. Robert Louton, Blair Plastic Surgery's board certified plastic surgeon, has over 20 years of cosmetic surgery experience and helps us uncover the truth.

tuck post-pregnancy, wait at least six months after delivery and try to get as close as possible to your ideal weight for the best and safest results.

1. Plastic surgery is not "real" surgery. FALSE. Plastic surgery should not be taken lightly. While there are great benefits to undergoing plastic surgery (improved appearance, improved self-esteem, etc.), there are also risks. Every operation, no matter how minor, has certain risks involved. Dr. Louton will thoroughly discuss the specific risks of the procedure you are interest in pursuing during your consultation.

8. Liposuction will remove cellulite. FALSE. While liposuction can help camouflage or improve cellulite in some patients, it is not usually the best solution. To date, all known methods to eliminate cellulite have been temporary or suboptimal. New laser-based cellulite treatments have been available for about one year. Only time will tell whether the results are consistent, long lasting and worth the higher costs.

7. During a tummy tuck, the belly button is removed and a new one is made. FALSE. Removing extra skin below the belly button can reshape and reposition its location but the belly button is never removed during a tummy tuck.

9. Plastic surgery is always cosmetic and leaves no scars. FALSE. Although breast augmentations, Botox and facelifts get all the press, plastic surgery covers everything from correcting birth defects such as cleft palates to post-cancer breast reconstruction and work-related hand injuries. Dr. Robert Louton is skilled at minimizing scars and hiding them in inconspicuous areas, but all surgical incisions create scarring. For the best aesthetic outcome, seek out a board certified plastic surgeon with years of cosmetic procedures experience.

2. Plastic surgery is about vanity. FALSE. If you feel good about your body, you feel better about yourself and the world around you. When you finally undergo plastic surgery to improve the area(s) that trouble you, you will then be better able to concentrate on other aspects of your life.

10. Cosmetic surgery is a luxury reserved for the rich. FALSE. You don’t have to be rich to afford the look you desire. Cosmetic Surgery is more affordable than you think and multiple financing options are available to fit your budget. Blair Plastic Surgery accepts Care Credit, Med Loans Financing, and works with local banks to help make your goals a reality.

3. BOTOX Cosmetic and dermal fillers such as JUVEDERM, RESTYLANE, RADIESSE, etc., can replace a facelift. FALSE. In well-trained hands, cosmetic injectables provide natural, beautiful enhancements and are a good alternative for individuals who do not want to undergo surgery. However, when there is a significant amount of loose facial or neck skin, they do not take the place of surgery. 4. Breast implants is the only way to enlarge the breasts. FALSE. You can now safely enhance the size of the breast by removing fat from one area and placing it in the breast. This technique can also be used for breast reconstruction.

Robert Louton, MD

5. A breast lift is the only way to lift the breasts. FALSE. If your skin is in good shape and breast sagging is minimal, you may achieve a “lifting” effect with breast implants alone. A consultation with Dr. Louton can help determine whether this is a possibility for you.

BLAIR PLASTIC SURGERY

6. You can undergo a tummy tuck right after a C-Section. FALSE. While both procedures can result in similar scars, they should never be done at the same time. If you’re considering a tummy January / February 2013

A Family Shares A Special Day Growing up in a family with five sisters and three brothers, helped me learn valuable lessons that I’ve used throughout my life: You’re not always going to get along with people around you, you’re not always going to think the same, you’re not going to look the same, and you certainly are not going to live the same. My sister was diagnosed with Terri and her husband cancer 16 years ago. Through chemo therapy, radiation treatments, reconstructive surgeries, tests, more surgeries and even more treatments…she has never lost her sense of humor. I love being around her because just seeing her makes me smile. The past couple years have been devastating for Terri, as if fighting and winning her battle with cancer was not enough, she had to face the death of her oldest son. This past year, after her hair was returning, she experienced total hair loss again, this time being diagnosed with alopecia universalis,. a medical condition involving rapid hair loss of all hair, including eyebrows and eyelashes. My family noticed that Terri began losing that wonderful sense of humor…that wonderful ability to make people laugh. She mentioned, that as hard as she tried to find the perfect wigs, or applying the perfect make up she was not feeling very pretty. When we looked at recent pictures of her, we noticed she changed her look; depending on how her make-up was applied. So wanting to help her, Terri’s husband, our mother, aunt, and all Terri’s sisters treated her to a permanent make-up make over at Secrets by Lorie for her birthday in July. Six of us went with her to her appointment in Bellefonte PA. Within two hours my sister had perfectly applied eyeliner and beautifully shaped eyebrows. It was a very positive and uplifting experience for all. The following week, Terri attended her 40th class reunion and she looked and felt beautiful, she says “Thanks to my wonderful family and my new friend Lorie Litzinger”. Terri is enjoying her new look and having fun again. She gets up every morning and looks in the mirror and says “Good Morning Pretty Lady!”

by Lorie

“My salon was filled with so much excitement and love for Terri that day. I will never forget the emotion we all felt seeing her face literally light up with her new permanent makeup. Terri, you are an inspiration and an example of how to celebrate the good times and hold on through the touch times. Enjoy your new makeup and the time it will be saving you. You have always been a very pretty lady!” – Lorie Litzinger

I have a sister from Kansas, one from Virginia, and a sister-in-law from Kentucky who all traveled for appointments Sisters, Terri Colabove and with Lorie at her beautiful salon. The before Dianne Crust and after pictures on Lorie’s web site are the real deal, no touch ups, no airbrushing, no professional photography… they are the actual pictures taken at her salon. Lorie transforms women and makes them look and feel good. When you look good you feel good, and when you feel good you are confident…confident women do amazing things, as is evident when you read through The Women’s Journal. I would also like to thank Tere Rill for publishing The Women’s Journal. Congratulations on your 5th Anniversary. I read your journal from cover to cover, you offer wonderful advice and information with style. I look forward to turning to the “centerfold” each month to see Lorie’s page. From Hydrotherapy To Massage, Home Therapies Can Help Ease Arthritis Pain About one out of every five American adults has been diagnosed with arthritis, and it is the most common cause of disability in the United States, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The pain and stiffness caused by arthritis - and the high cost of arthritis medications - prompt many people to seek effective home therapies.

rests, and leak-free design. Remember to consult your doctor before beginning any home therapy, as hydrotherapy may not be appropriate for all types of arthritis or with other health conditions. Lifestyle - As important as it is to work with your doctor to manage your arthritis, self-management is also essential. Lifestyle habits such as staying active and watching your weight can help reduce the pain of arthritis and improve function, according to the CDC. Engage in at least 30 minutes of moderate exercise at least five days a week; it's OK to break that time into 10-minute intervals, the CDC says. Carrying excess weight can make your arthritis worse, and losing just 11 pounds can improve mobility and reduce pain. It's important to manage your weight as part of your overall arthritis treatment.

While you should always work with your doctor to manage your arthritis, you can also do a lot at home to help minimize symptoms. Home remedies like hydrotherapy, massage and simple exercise have been shown to help reduce the pain and inflammation associated with multiple forms of arthritis. Here are some common home therapies to discuss with your health care provider: Massage - Recent studies indicate that massage can help people with arthritis, the Arthritis Foundation reports on its website ArthritisToday.org. Simple massage of painful joints such as in the hands, elbows or knees, may help your arthritis pain. You don't need to pay for a professional massage to find relief. Talk to your health care provider for simple tips on self-massage. Besides pain relief, massage offers another benefit that may be particularly helpful to people living with chronic pain: relaxation.

The CDC estimates that the number of people with arthritis will increase to 67 million by 2030. As more people struggle with arthritis' debilitating effects, simple, cost-effective home therapies may help millions more find relief. For a free brochure including more information about walk-in bathtubs and other solutions for making living at home more convenient, visit premiercarebathing.com/saferbathing, or call 888-378-7953.

Hydrotherapy - Soaking in warm water has been a viable home therapy for muscle and joint aches for centuries. Your arthritis may also cause mobility issues, making you wary about climbing in and out of a traditional soaking tub. A walk-in tub may be a viable alternative. Premier Care in Bathing, makers of walk-in tubs, offers its Hydrovescent Therapy system designed to help ease aches and pains but with gentler water motion than you would find in a traditional jetted tub. The company has earned the Arthritis Foundation's Ease of Use commendation for its easy-to-enter tubs that feature extra-wide, low-level entry, left or right-hand door openings, contoured and slip-resistant seats and backJanuary / February 2013

SMOKING IN WOMEN

If you are a smoker and a woman, read this article. Tired of hearing the advice to stop smoking? Take a few minutes to read and think about the following comments. Any discussion about smoking cessation begins with some sobering statistics. These statistics explain the real facts about smoking in general and in women specifically. Cigarette smoking kills. Annually, about 174,000 women die from smoking-related illnesses. Some hardliners will say “you have to die from something”; however, you do not have to die from this. Most hardliners change their tune when the suffering begins and the outcome becomes bleak. Women smokers lose an average of 14.5 years of life compared to 14.2 for men. Smoking in women has become a national epidemic. Women, as well as their physicians, should become more knowledgeable about these upward trends and understand why women can have a tougher time quitting.

Search keyword women’s journal

Women have greater difficulty with smoking cessation. Nicotine replacement therapy, a common aid in smoking cessation, may not be effective for many women due to the differences in how the brain metabolizes and responds to the nicotine. Generally, women are more fearful than men of gaining weight if they quit. Typically, the average weight gain is 6-8 pounds, but women can gain up to 30 pounds. A woman’s menstrual cycle affects tobacco withdrawal symptoms. Response to anti-smoking drugs may also be related to cycle phase. Stress is a risk factor for smoking for both men and women; however, women who have been physically or emotionally abused are 1.4 times more likely to smoke. Having a parent in prison during childhood doubles the chances of women smoking. The impact of adverse childhood experiences has been found to increase the risk of smoking. This increased risk seems to occur in women, and not in men.

Advertisers are well aware of the problems women face once they are hooked on cigarettes. Putting cigarettes in designer boxes and making the cigarettes in bright colors has been tried. Transference is the term to describe a commercial showing attractive women having a great time while smoking. The hope is that women will feel smoking will help them have the time of their lives, just as the people are doing in the commercial. There is nothing attractive about premature wrinkles, smelly hair and clothes, yellow teeth, and bad breath.

There is nothing better that you can do to improve your immediate and long-term health than to stop smoking. Remember, if you fall off of the wagon and smoke, do not give up. Beauty

The Winter Blahs The snow blew past my salon windows sideways while my heaters worked overtime to maintain a cozy temperature. All but one client had canceled. And while I was tempted to close, I thought if she needed her hair done bad enough to come out in this I would be available. Finally headlights pulled into my parking lot. When she opened the door the wind blew her in with a spray of wet snow. “I can’t make it until spring” she gasped as she took off her gloves. “The holidays are over and there’s not even so much as a birthday until spring. I’m going crazy, I need a diversion.” "Well, tweaking your image is a great diversion for this time of year. Sit down, make yourself comfortable and we’ll talk," I said. As the outside grew colder and darker, inside, her hair became warmer and lighter. That evening we advanced her regular color formula to a multi-dimensional design. We added a sprinkle of strategic highlights while wrapping her shoulders with deep warm lowlights. Her cut simply needed to be readjusted to her head shape, and presto… winter blahs gone. As my client’s new look took shape she began planning the rest of her transformation.

The next day called for a make-up adjustment. Then a more colorful winter coat and scarf. A few window-shopping trips to get more ideas, a volunteer position to show off her new look, and finally a free online university course for entertainment. As my client woke with the sun in her eyes on the first day of spring she realized she really did make it through the winter. And now… what could her new spring image be?

Landscaping

2013 Brings Golden Opportunities! Golden Threadleaf False Cypress

Melody Aumiller of Fox Hill Gardens

Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Filifera Aurea’Popular due to the bright color and graceful appearance of this shrub’s weeping elongated branches and thread-like foliage, this dense, slowgrowing evergreen shrub typically grows into a broad cone shape. It reaches a semi-dwarf size of 6 to 7 feet tall in 20 years, but may eventually reach 15 to 20 feet tall in perfect conditions. It is easy to prune to control height and width, however, and this can be done in winter to allow use of the citrus-scented cuttings, or just at the shrub is beginning to grow in the spring. Peeling, reddish-brown bark develops on mature branches.

This year, invest in gold – golden evergreens, that is! Gain a valuable return on your investment with decades of growth, and lots of garden interest. Many plants are popular for their exciting bright yellow and chartreuse tones in the garden, and gold varieties of False Cypress are particularly striking in shrub, small tree or taller tree form. Plant one, or many, to add a gorgeous Midas touch to your landscape. Remember these fragrant evergreens when cutting fresh decorations to bring indoors in the winter, since they make stunning arrangements in centerpieces or vases, and perfect accents in wreaths, garlands, and mantles. They also add extraordinary color to a bleak wintry landscape, especially when planted near Red Twig dogwood, or Winterberry Hollies covered with ruby red berries. During the rest of the year, combine with other plantings of contrasting colors. Plant near Red Japanese Maples, burgundy Barberries, Weigela and Purple Ninebark, or the blues of Moonglow, Wichita, Blue Star or Blue Rug Junipers. Purple, red and blue perennials, or a swath of Blue Fescue grass can also make terrific partners with golden evergreens.

Chamaecyparis pisifera ‘Aurea Mops’- Also called Golden Mops, this slightly more civilized False Cypress is similar in habit to ‘Filifera Aurea’, but will only reach 3 to 5 feet high and wide at maturity. This makes it more suitable for smaller spaces and foundation plantings.

Fox Hill Gardens is a full service nursery and landscape business located in State College, PA. Specializing in shade, wildlife and native plants, we also carry an excellent selection of trees, shrubs, perennials, fruit trees and seasonal nursery plants, and our friendly and knowledgeable staff can help you choose selections for even the most difficult or challenging areas of your landscape. As gardens lie dormant, Fox Hill Gardens staff is indoors planning this year’s busy season and have reduced staff and hours during January and February, BUT don’t miss the opportunity to get gift certificates for the cherished gardeners in you life for Valentine’s Day, birthday, or any occasion! If you need to place a special order, request a consultation or design, or contact us for any reason, please call or e-mail and leave a message. We look forward to serving your landscaping needs in 2013!

Golden Dwarf Hinoki False Cypress

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Nana Lutea’ – This shrub is a tiny gold-tipped treasure that thrives in rock gardens, beds or borders, and the golden yellow fan-like foliage and irregularly globe-shaped, upright habit has a distinctive look. ‘Nana Lutea’ is a very slow grower that will remain compact at 18 to 36 inches tall and 36 inches wide at maturity, and will tolerate partial shade.

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Verdonii’- ‘Verdonii’ has very gold foliage that resists sunburn, and an irregular, undulating habit, making it a prime candidate for bonsai. This means it can easily be trimmed to any desired shape or size. This selection has a slightly faster growth rate than ‘Nana Lutea’ of 3 to 5 inches per year and maximum height of 3 to 4 feet tall, which allows it to find a niche anywhere you need extra color.

Fox Hill Gardens Your local source for quality plants!

Fernspray Gold Hinoki False Cypress

Chamaecyparis obtusa ‘Fernspray Gold’- Suitable for a much more spacious location, ‘Fernspray Gold’ is also referred to as slender Hinoki cypress because it slowly reaches a naturally conical shape approximately 10 feet high and 5 feet wide at 10 to 15 years of age, and up to 20 feet tall at maturity under ideal conditions. Arching horizontal branches and soft, lemon–yellow foliage give the tips of the tree an airy appearance. This selection could sunburn in full direct afternoon sunlight, so situate accordingly. During sustained cold weather the yellow tips develop a ‘winter blush’ of burgundy, really adding a special touch of color to winter plantings and cuttings. The first days at home with a new baby are full of visits from family and friends, shared joy and special time alone bonding as a family. But soon you'll need to leave the house for trips to the grocery store, doctor's office or even road trips, which requires figuring out how to safely transport your child in the car. Here are some tips to help ensure your travels with children are not only safe, but enjoyable: • Car seats - The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends a rear-facing car seat for the first two years of a child's life. One problem for many parents is buying a car seat that will last their child the entire first two years. Babies grow quickly, and in rear-facing car seats, they can often run out of room for their growing legs - way before they reach the age of 2.

Super- Sweet,

The Graco SnugRide Click Connect 40 is the only rear facing infant car seat suitable for use from birth through 2 years of age because it has an adjustable base with eight recline positions to provide the most leg room for growing children. The infant car seat also features the Simply Safe Adjust harness system, allowing parents to easily adjust the headrest and harness with one hand as their child grows. Available exclusively at Babies"R"Us in store and online, new parents will be pleased by the longevity of the SnugRide Click Connect 40 infant car seat, which accommodates children up to 40 pounds in comfort.

Once the car seat is purchased, it should be properly installed and securely fastened in the backseat of the vehicle. Many pediatric clinics, fire departments and other community centers offer installation of car seats by certified child passenger-safety technicians to ensure that the car seat is installed properly. Ask your doctor for a listing of technicians in your community.

guistic and motor skills as they sing along with nursery rhymes, and other infant songs. When you embark on your next journey, bring along a CD or two of your baby's favorite tunes, plug them into the car stereo and sing along for miles. • Sun protection - "Help protect your sweet baby's eyes during road trips by hanging sun protection shades in the rear windows of your car. They're sure to make the ride more comfortable for your little one by providing shade and sheltering your infant's eyes from the harsh sun," says blogger Erin Loechner of-DesignForMinikind.com.

• Entertainment - Babies love to interact with adults, so have someone sit next to the baby in the backseat while on road trips to provide entertainment for the child. As the child grows, the entertainment can range from making silly faces to singing songs or playing word games like identifying your baby's nose, ears, chin and tummy.

• For long trips - "Babies need to stretch their little legs just like adults do," says blogger Rebecca Woolf of GirlsGoneChild.net. "So before departing, remember to map out potential stopping areas. Take advantage of the various rest stops for feeding, changing diapers and a little exercise. Pack a blanket to spread across the grass for some wiggle time before hitting the road. And hopefully, once back in the car your baby (and you) will feel refreshed and revived for your journey." The first time taking your baby for a car ride is always the hardest, but soon, with practice, you'll be an old pro, and hopefully as your child grows bigger, you'll both look forward to car trips to the grocery store or to grandma and grandpa's house.

• Music stimulation - Music helps children develop linI read it in the Women’s Journal!

Local Author, Speaker Receives PA Shining Light Award - Also only female Toastmaster accredited speaker in state

PORT MATILDA – Tammy A. Miller of Port Matilda is one of four state women lauded at the 2012 Pennsylvania Breast Cancer Coalition October 9 at the Harrisburg Hilton. Pennsylvania’s First Lady Susan Corbett presented Ms. Miller with the Shining Light Award for selfless service, longtime advocacy, and continued dedication to the coalition and breast cancer causes. She is a popular speaker and emcee at breast cancer functions, including the PBCC State-wide Home Run Derby fundraising activities and Penn State Lady Lions Pink Zone events. In addition, she donates proceeds of her book, Pink Ribbon Stories: A Celebration of Life, to the coalition. She also earned Toastmasters International’s most prestigious title recently. She received the esteemed Accredited Speaker designation at the Toastmasters International Convention in Orlando, Florida, in August. She is the only woman in PA to hold this accreditation. Toastmasters launched the Accredited Speaker Program in 1981 to recognize members who have mastered professional-level speaking skills. Ms. Miller is one of only 65 people in the world who have received the Accredited Speaker (AS) designation.

Markle Receives Youth Advocate Award

ALTOONA – Jacque Markle, a resource coordinator with Altoona Regional’s Behavioral Health Services, received the 2012 Blair Countians for Drug Free Communities Youth Advocate Award for her ability to “build and provide hope” to the children and families she meets in her work and volunteer activities. “Jacque has consistently been a top-notch advocate and volunteer for Blair County Youth League; volunteer for Dreams Go On, a therapeutic horseback riding program; and past supporter of Special Olympics, The Arc, Volunteers for Literacy, and Central PA Humane Society,” said Heather Kennedy of the Blair Countians for Drug Free Communities, Blair County Youth League, who presented Ms. Markle with the award. After graduating from Penn State with a bachelor’s degree in Individual and Family Studies, she began her career by visiting infants and toddlers experiencing developmental delays through The Blair County Children’s Center, an early intervention program. A hospital employee for 16 years, Ms. Markle has spent the last nine in resource coordination. Previously, she was the supervisor of Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Services.

Voelcker Opens Own Law Practice

DANVILLE - With more than 12 years of legal experience, Laurinda Voelcker wanted to expand her client base and become her own boss. She sought the advice of the Bucknell Small Business Development Center. Certified to practice law in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and New York, she had handled a variety of cases working in two separate legal roles. When a local lawyer and proprietor of an existing law firm in Danville was elected to public office and could no longer own the business, Laurinda saw a golden opportunity. Ms. Voelcker needed to create a business plan and financial projections for the acquisition in order to get a loan. The SBDC helped her do that. She wanted to keep expenses low in the beginning. While she wanted to spend more on marketing to help establish the new name, she also decided to nix the company car and save on automobile and maintenance expenses. Working through each category of revenues and expenses, she gained the understanding she needed to thoroughly justify every source and use of cash. Her plan earned her necessary financing from M&T Bank with an SBA guarantee. The Voelcker Law Office is general practice firm that specializes in family and collection law. Like the previous owner, she delivers excellent legal advice in a timely manner and maintains the firm's reputation. Devoted to researching and expanding her knowledge of the law, The Voelcker Law Office will have an edge as it strives to stay the most up-to-date on current and changing practices.

Pettinger Wins Huntingdon Athena Award

HUNTINGDON – The Huntingdon County Chamber of Commerce chose Maria Pettinger as its 2012 Athena Award recipient. Ms. Pettinger is an accomplished, innovative leader who has made a substantial difference by exhibiting creativity and initiative in her profession. She initiated, supported, and developed collaborative programs and services deemed significant in the welfare of women in the community. She has served as an inspirational example of extraordinary dedication and contributed significantly to the effectiveness of her employer by providing high quality services to local women. She has served as a role model and mentor for students from several colleges and universities, provided educational programs for women, and has empowered them to educate themselves. Ms. Pettinger has served as president of the Huntingdon County Arts Council, on the Board of Directors of the Huntingdon County Historical Society, Huntingdon County United Way, Huntingdon Landmarks, Inc, and JC Blair Hospital Foundation. She has also been a McConnellstown Playhouse volunteer, served on the JC Blair Cares and 100th Anniversary committees.

O'Rear Earns Bedford's Athena Award

BEDFORD – Marcia D. O'Rear, president and owner of StelTek Graphics, Inc., received the 2012 Athena Award from the Bedford County Chamber of Commerce. Ms. O'Rear served the county and community in many ways – with the chamber, the development association, and county board of Junior Achievement for Western PA. She's been involved in the Summer Youth Leadership Program, hosted Youth Entrepreneurial Program participants, the Humane Society, Old Bedford Village, and numerous chambers of commerce in Cambria, Blair, and Centre counties, plus Allegany County, MD. She was named one of the state's Top 50 Business Women in 2009. Her large format printing firm was formed in 2003. StelTek is one the few large format printing companies in the U.S. which is a fully women-owned business. Though highly successful, she always finds time to mentor students and women who want to start their own businesses – making her an outstanding candidate for the Athena Award. Continuing Education

Penn State Continuing Education Gives Adults a Second Chance at a College Degree To complete unfinished business • To achieve a personal goal • For an employment boost By Deborah A. Benedetti Adults have many reasons for wanting to earn a college degree. For Lisa Swalina of Bellefonte, it is unfinished business. For Nancy Dull of Petersburg, it is a personal goal.

Nancy Dull agrees. “I didn’t know what I wanted to do with school 20 years ago.” So she continued to work, gaining experience in marketing, executive education, and corporate development. After joining the Penn State staff, she took several courses, but wasn’t sure what she wanted to study.

Swalina first enrolled at Penn State after graduating from Tyrone Area High School in 1987, completing nearly two years before quitting. “It just wasn’t the right time,” said Swalina. Soon after graduating from Shade High School in Somerset County in 1981, Dull Lisa Swalina focuses on her homework. worked in south Florida for six years in the travel industry. When she returned to central Pennsylvania in 1989, she got a job at Penn State and began taking courses, but wasn’t sure what she wanted to do.

After working many years, Dull, at the age of 49, was able to return to school in the fall of 2011 with the support of her fiancé, Scott, and her family. Now, having completed Nancy Dull applies her new skills at work. more than half of the credits required, Dull’s goal is to earn an associate degree in letters, arts and sciences. She plans to eventually complete a bachelor’s degree in either sociology or criminology.

Now more than 20 years later, both women are enrolled in the associate degree in letters, arts and sciences program at Penn State, and both are using the student support programs and services offered by Penn State Continuing Education to help them achieve their education goal.

Dull has worked at Penn State for more than 20 years—the last 12 years with the Center for Global Business Studies in the Smeal College of Business, where she is the business manager. “I chose the associate degree in letters, arts and sciences, because it gives you an opportunity to have a very broad perspective on a lot of subjects,” said Dull. “Before I started taking classes, I tried to surround myself with women in leadership roles, networked with other adult learners, met with staff at Continuing Education and, over time, gained enough confidence to try again.”

Swalina returned to Penn State last summer and needs only two courses to complete her associate degree. She expects to graduate in the spring. She has been taking evening courses at the University Park campus and online courses through Penn State’s World Campus. Both types of courses are working well for Swalina, who is a full-time contract administrator for Uni-Tec Consulting Engineers in State College.

Both Swalina and Dull want other adults to know they can return to school, too. It’s never too late.

Swalina’s biggest challenge with school has been time management. To be a successful student, Swalina knows she needs a designated area in her house for schoolwork and to carefully schedule her time. Being in the classroom with 18-year-olds was also a concern, “but it’s been a positive experience,” said Swalina, who lives with her husband, Chet, and one dog and two cats that they adopted from a shelter.

Penn State Continuing Education can help. Continuing Education offers student support services and free programs, including information sessions for returning adults, a math improvement course and the Transitions: College and Career Prep program—which begins March 25, 2013, in both Lewistown and State College. For information about programs available through Penn State Continuing Education at University Park campus, the Penn State Lewistown Center, or Penn State Williamsport Center, visit http://ceup.psu.edu online, or call 814-865-3443 or 800-228-1627.

Another positive for Swalina: “It’s fun to meet other adult learners in class. I find them inspiring. It’s a lot different for me now. I’m more studious and focused on my education.”

Want to Make a Difference?

There’s a group of women – actually, right now there are three groups of women who meet four times a year. Each in their own right is interested in helping the community in which they live. They come from all walks of life and varying financial backgrounds but they have one thing in common – a heart of gold. As individuals they want to make a meaningful impact but understand that when they get together and join forces that impact is HUGE. They are proud to have a way of to contribute to local non-profits as a group. So, if you want 100% of your donation to go directly to a local charitable organization; if you want to learn about amazing work that is being done locally; if you want to become part of creating a powerful group that makes an immediate, direct and positive impact in your community, then 100 Women Who Care could be your answer. CENTRE story of giving. Bridge of Hope ends and prevents homelessness for women and children with the help of trained mentoring groups from within local congregations. The program helps single mothers attain: • Permanent housing • Financial stability through employment • Life-changing friendships • Growth and wholeness Bridge of Hope's model is a three-way partnership between professionally trained staff, one homeless or at-risk single mother and her children, and a trained, church-based mentoring group of eight to twelve mentors. Through use of this model, Bridge of Hope affiliates seek to promote physical, emotional, social and spiritual wholeness.

HUNTINGDON story of giving. After some discussion, we chose the Huntingdon Drop-In Center as our charity for the fall. The center, on Washington Street, is a daytime haven for persons with mental health challenges. They provide companionship, advice, mentoring, advocacy, and daily lunch, events like Bingo, outing, and transportation. We donated $600 to them and they were overwhelmed and grateful.

When Love Isn’t Enough to use our love to heal them, it may not help them recognize the selfdestructive path they are on.

As parents we watch our children grow and see the potential they possess. Joyful moments filled with laughter and exploring their interests and talents. We strive to teach them to become good citizens with morals, values, and goals for their future. As they enter adolescence, many new and exciting opportunities arise. With new sports, clubs, and academic endeavors they begin to mold their future path. This is also the time when independence is desired and finding a balance can be difficult.

In times like this, clear and concise expectations and boundaries are vital components of the home environment. Part of the expectations may include the need for treatment. We have all heard of court ordered treatment, sometimes parent ordered treatment is what is needed. At Life Counseling Services and Rehab After Work/School, comprehensive treatment can begin to heal our children from the inside out. Offering mental health and substance abuse counseling, we strive to give individuals the tools to get their lives back on track. An important aspect is for parents to also get the support they need through these difficult times. We will be offering a weekly parent support group starting Wednesday, January 23rd from 6:30pm-7:30pm. For more information please contact Nicole White at nwhite@ obhcares.com. You do not have to face this alone.

Many adolescents and young adults excel in this environment. Along with their gradual independence, communication and trust are still important aspects of the family relationship. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. For some families this can be a time when trust and respect begin to vanish, communication begins to dwindle, and we feel left in the dark. Whether our children struggle with emotional difficulties or substance dependence, we riddle ourselves with worry and unjust guilt. As hard as we try January / February 2013

Did you know Jezebel’s has a Great Selection of Nursing Bras?

Choosing the right nursing bra can be tricky! Unfortunately, most expectant moms end up buying nursing bras that are too small because they have no idea what size their breasts will increase to. At Jezebel’s, we often fit nursing bras before the the babies are born so that the mothers have a bra to take to the hospital. They usually come in a week or 2 before they have the baby. Some of our Bravado bras are actually made to work that way!

Ready, Set, Go — Find the Right Sports Bra!

When you run, each time your foot hits the ground, the rest of your body pounds down seconds later – including your breasts. Quick anatomy lesson – the breast is mostly made up of fat and delicate underlying connective tissue. Each time you pound the pavement without proper support, that connective tissue actually snaps and breaks down, which causes a breast’s loss of shape – otherwise known as SAGGING. Know this---- a sporting goods store is great for most of your sporting attire, but not a bra. Which makes sense, since they are not bra or bust support experts by any stretch of the imagination. To get the right sports bra you should head to a professional bra fitting shop like Jezebels. Why? Regardless of your size or sport, our staff are support experts and passionate about what they do. They’ll introduce you to a selection of sports bras made by bra manufacturers in the right size for your sport’s impact level! I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Health

How LOUD is too LOUD? Noise induced hearing loss is 100% preventable. People of all ages should understand the hazards of noise and how to practice good hearing health everyday. It is important to learn which noises can damage your hearing (those over 85dB). Always wear earplugs or earmuffs when participating in loud activities. Don’t forget to protect the ears of children who are too young to protect their own. If you suspect a hearing loss, have a hearing evaluation by an audiologist.

Thinking of Removing that Tattoo

Lorie’s Beauty Salon has been in business for 12 years and offers tattoo removal and permanent make-up. Lorie is certified in EliminINK Tattoo Removal, Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, and Micro-Pigmentation Centre Certified Professional. Also ask about corrective cosmetic tattooing and camouflaging. These areas include areola and nipples, vitiligo, scars resulting from burns and plastic surgery hair line face lift scars. She has added these two new services to her already successful Salon.

That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?

EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos, such as permanent makeup corrections, unwanted name, gang related tattoos, tattoo markings for radiation, tattoo redesign, or impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

After Breast Surgery Natural-looking Option

Areola repigmentation is an elective procedure that is the final step for many in breast reconstruction. Once medical treatments have been completed, the option is worth consideration. This procedure requires two sessions thirty days apart. We are able to closely match the areola of a single mastectomy or able to create areolas when a double mastectomy is necessary. Today many women choose to have nipple/areola tattooing because it is less invasive than tissue grafting, heals quickly and looks most natural I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Rae’s Sunday Sweet by Kim Kowalczyk

E

ating “out” is a longtime tradition for the Café on the Park family; a tradition that I’ve traced back to my grandmother, Elizabeth “Rae” Brennan Alexander. She always loved to dress up and eat out. In the 1930s, when her family had big dreams but little money, Rae made Sunday dinner a dress-up affair, including a favorite hat and white gloves, and, weather permitting, she served the meal at a table under their farm’s pear tree.

January/ February 2013

As a farmer’s wife, she cooked seasonally, with a menu based on what the family raised: dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, vegetables and fruit. So it’s not surprising that the Sunday meal featured roast chicken (fresh from the yard), sweet potatoes (from the root cellar), homemade bread, and, often, raisin cake. The latter was one of her specialties —28a dense, rich, moist, sweet cake that needed no icing. In her world, food expressed love, and breaking bread together as a family meant sharing love. May you share the same spirit with your family. And don’t forget the hat and gloves!
