Be Ready for Summer with Strong, Healthy Legs! You will need to wear compression stockings.
Healthy veins are essential to living well. Four out of ten adults in the United States suffer from venous disorders. If you are one of them, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available.
After a vein treatment, you will need to wear compression stockings for several days. Wearing graduated compression stockings accelerates the velocity at which blood flows through the deep veins. This increased blood flow helps in the healing process. The stockings are designed to deliver a gradient compression to the leg, with the strongest around the ankle and gradually decreasing up the leg, promoting blood return to the heart.
Now is the ideal time to contact a vein specialist for treatment of unsightly varicose veins, facial veins and spider veins in the legs.
Why now? You may need more than one treatment.
Compression garments are less cumbersome and easier to hide underneath clothing you would wear now versus the summer months.
Eliminating unwanted veins is a process and can sometimes take more than one treatment to get you the desired result. Because the effectiveness is individualized and depends on your own body’s response, repeat treatments are sometimes needed and must be scheduled in four to eight week intervals.
Your veins can appear darker or inflamed before you start to see signs of improvement.
The sooner you start treatment, the faster you eliminate painful varicose veins and embarrassing facial and leg veins. By having your vein treatments now, you can spend your summer months doing things you love without suffering from painful, achy legs, and wearing shorts without worrying about embarrassing veins.
Veins can sometimes appear to become worse before they get better. They may look darker, and in some cases red and inflamed, for a period of time before they start to fade. Bruising may also occur. Starting your treatments now will allow you sufficient time for healing and gets you ready for summer.
You will want to avoid sun exposure.
So why wait?
One risk factor of treating varicose and/or spider veins is permanent skin discoloration overlying the treatment area. This can be minimized by avoiding oral iron supplementation and sun exposure or tanning for four to eight weeks after treatment.
Call Advanced Vein & Laser Center today. The staff at AVLC will address your concerns, answer questions about your venous condition, and explain various treatment options. We accept most major insurance plans, including Medicare.
Staying out of the sun is much easier to do now, when outdoor activities and sunshine are less abundant than the summer months.
Schedule your vein treatment today and have “beach-ready” legs this summer! AVLC can help.

The Problem with Inflation By Judy Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc.
approximately 132% of the normal retirement age. In addition, Social Security cost of living increases (a main way to fight inflation) will compound on a larger monthly benefit providing greater maintenance of purchasing power through retirement.
Typically, when I am thinking of an article for the Women’s Journal, I try to think of an interesting, timely topic. I decided to change it up this time by going with an admittedly dull subject, but one with important ramifications that can quickly destroy a retirement plan: Inflation.
Planning ahead before retirement can be the most impactful for any retirement savings decisions. For instance, try to increase your contributions towards retirement every year. If you continue to save the same money amount, you’re not really saving the same amount; you’re saving that dollar figure minus what you’ve lost in purchasing power to inflation. To help put this on auto-pilot, make sure all your payroll deductions are set as a percentage of your salary rather than a fixed dollar amount.
What is inflation? Inflation is defined by Fifth Edition of Dictionary of Finance and Investment Terms as the ‘rise in the prices of goods and services.’ This is important for retirement because retirees and future retirees tend to ignore this in their retirement plans.
Finally, the best way to fight inflation before and during retirement is by investing to obtain better returns than inflation. To better keep up your buying power, maintain a diversified growth portfolio even after retirement. Moving to a very conservative portfolio may mean you won’t lose market value but it might also mean you lose buying power. For instance, if you have $20,000 invested earning 2% and inflation runs at 3%, your portfolio would grow to $24,380 but your purchasing power would leave you with an inflation adjusted balance of $18,141.
The current U.S. inflation rate for 2013 was 1.5%. This is an incredibly tame inflation rate. However, extrapolating that out over a typical retirement time frame and it creates significant cost increases. If you required $20,000 now annually in retirement and lived 21 years (the average time in retirement) at the 1.5% inflation rate, you would need $27,341.16 at the end of that time to maintain your standard of living. However, the average inflation rate measured by the CPI has been 3%. If you required $20,000 now annually in retirement and lived 21 years at the more typical 3% inflation rate, you would need $37,205.89 at the end of retirement. Considering 21 years is the average time in retirement (meaning half live longer), what would that 3% inflation do to buying power of $20,000 if you lived another 30 years? You would need $48,545.25 in the last year of retirement. 3% is also an average and in many years inflation ran much higher. In 1979, the annual inflation rate hit 13.3%. The damage this can do to buying power for retirees is concerning and needs to be addressed in any retirement plan.
When preparing for an enjoyable retirement, keep inflation in the frame. It is important to not only be able to buy necessities and cover expenses now, but also later in your retirement years. Therefore, take the time to run a calculator that includes inflation to be sure you are saving enough and make the adjustments to your portfolio and/or contributions to be sure you stay on track. Penn State employees who stayed at the University for twenty to thirty years may think they are set with SERs pension paying them a fixed amount every month. The concern is that the pension payment that served you well at 59 may not pay your way as well when you are 70. Keeping in mind the damage inflation can make to a fixed payment such as a pension or annuity is an important consideration. One thing that can be done in this situation is to cash out your contribution in PSERs and invest it to battle inflation that will affect the fixed payment from the State Employees Retirement system.

Another way to mitigate inflation risk is to take social security payments as late as possible. Waiting until age 70 (the age at which benefits no longer increase) will increase Social Security payments by March / April 2014

Breast Density: New Requirements For Mammogram Reporting By Kelly W. Biggs, MD, Tyrone Hospital Radiology
Breast Imaging, for example, has not endorsed screening breast ultrasound for the general population. MRI is a highly sensitive means of detecting breast cancer, but unfortunately MRI detects too many benign cancer mimickers to be effective as a screening tool for the general population. It is also probably too expensive to be a realistic means of screening.
Last year Pennsylvania became the 13th state to pass a law requiring mammography providers to inform patients about their breast density. The intention of the law is to improve public awareness of breast density and its potential to hide a breast cancer on a mammogram.
The bottom line: don’t lose any sleep over changes in your annual mammogram letter. Be aware of your breast density and ask your doctor for guidance if you have concerns. If you would like to see your mammogram and discuss its sensitivity, please feel free to contact me at kbiggs@tyronehospital.org.
Radiologists have documented breast density in official mammogram reports for years. Breasts are categorized as: 1) mostly fatty, less than 25% fibrous and glandular tissue; 2) scattered fibroglandular, 25-50% fibrous and glandular tissue; 3) heterogeneously dense, 51-75% fibrous and glandular tissue; and 4) extremely dense, greater than 75% fibrous and glandular tissue. With the new law, an explanation of breast density will now be included on the lay language letter issued to patients after they have a mammogram. Fatty breast tissue is transparent, or dark, on a mammogram. A new mass that grows in fatty tissue is easy to see. It is a bit like looking at a bottle of shampoo that has just fallen into a bathtub of clear water. Breast ducts and connective tissue, the fibrous and glandular tissue referenced above, is bright on a mammogram. A mass that grows inside or under such tissue can be hard or impossible to see, just like that same shampoo bottle dropped into a bubble bath. Most mammographers who have read for a few years have missed a breast cancer that has been obscured by breast tissue. It typically is not a question of competence, but rather a limitation of the technology. Some cancers simply cannot be seen until they grow to the point of being felt by the patient or a clinician. This is why I encourage women who have mammograms to perform a monthly self assessment and to augment this with an annual physical. Physical examination is particularly important for women with dense breasts. You should not stop getting mammograms if your breasts are dense. Just recognize that mammography may not be as sensitive for you as for some others. Generally, women in the 3rd and 4th categories described above are considered to have dense breasts. This is a subjective assessment that will vary with the interpreting radiologist, the imaging technique, and the patient’s age. There is a fine line between 49 and 51 percent, so don’t be surprised, for example, if one radiologist calls your breasts “scattered fibroglandular” while another calls them “heterogeneously dense.” Breasts are typically easier to see through with digital mammography than with screen/film mammography, so the interpreting radiologist may decide your breasts are less dense after switching from old to new equipment, as we did at Tyrone Hospital last year. Finally, most women’s breasts become less dense with age. Patients shouldn’t take too seriously any variation in how their density is reported from year to year. One of the challenges associated with breast density is what to do about dense breasts. Greater attention to self assessment is a cost effective supplement, but it frankly doesn’t detect many cancers as early as we would like. Breast ultrasound is a great tool for assessing a known lump or an abnormality seen on mammogram, but it is very limited as a screening tool. The Society of I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Local Entrepreneur Spearheaded Support Group for Women with Pregnancy Losses
STATE COLLEGE – It all started with Lydia Meyers’ old family home movies and videos. How could they be transferred to DVD to preserve them for future gen-
erations? She purchased the equipment she needed and others started to ask her to transfer their treasured memories. Lydia had just married her Penn State sweetheart. They met playing in The Blue Band. After becoming expert at preserving old footage, they embarked on the task to digitize old Blue Band footage – more than 40 years of the band’s performances. Pickemup Productions is now a good business for the Myers family, and allows Lydia to work at home and care for two young children. However, Lydia still had another mission. She saw a need for a support group for women who had lost infants before and after birth. She adopted HEART – Helping Empty Arms Recover Together – and promoted a Central PA chapter. She was surprised how many women had suffered quietly with pregnancy loss, infant Lydia Meyers loss, and fertility issues. “Now they had others to speak with and provide comfort. Though many of us now have children, there is always the thought of the ones who aren’t here,” she said. Visit www.heartofcpa.org for information about the support groups and get instant support from their Heart of Central PA Facebook friends.

Finding the Perfect Fit! Since 2007, the mother/daughter team of Patty and Jessica Stover have been helping women of all sizes find their perfect fit! No doubt, finding the right size bra is often a problem for many women; estimates are that about 80% of women wear the wrong size bra. At Jezebel’s Boutique, we offer free professional bra fitting seven days a week. Let’s face it, your bra is the hardest-working garment you own. It supports your breasts, keeps your body looking trim and streamlined, and helps prevent shoulder strain. As the foundation for your entire wardrobe, your bra's condition, style, and fit should be a priority – but for many of us, it’s an after-thought. A simple update to your collection can have a big payoff – great support can visually shave 5 lbs off your figure, instantly! As spring approaches, many women will be busy looking at new fashions, or breaking out last year’s favorites in celebration of warmer weather. This is a perfect time to stop by our friendly store and let our professionally trained staff help you find the right bra for you! Ever wonder what’s involved with a bra fitting? It’s easy:
1. Measurements
To begin with, our professional fitter will take your band measurement, which is taken around the ribs under the breasts. Why is this important? The band size dictates not only the width of the bra band, it also dictates how far apart the shoulder straps are from each other.
2. Recommendations
The person fitting you will then use your measurement to determine a recommended bra size. This is not an exact science so you may end up trying on more than one size to see which fits you best. An experienced fitter should be able to accurately estimate your size based on this measurement alone. All brands and styles differ in fit so you'll need to try a few on to determine which is best for you.
3. Finessing

Free Professional Bra Fittings At Jezebel’s we believe that a properly fitted bra can make all the difference! In band sizes 28 to 50 and cup sizes AA to N! Corner of College & Garner, Downtown State College
Expect lots of questions at this stage. Is the bra comfortable? Does it ride up in the back? Do your breasts fit in the cups? It’s helpful for the fitter to be able to see the bra on you, and to be able to make any necessary adjustments.

4. Final decision
The last step is to put your top back on and see how the new bra works for you. Do you like the lines? Is there lace or detailing that shows through? Is it right for the necklines you wear? In addition to getting help determining your size, you can also get advice on different styles and have the right size and color brought right to your fitting room! At Jezebel’s, we are passionate about providing excellent customer service. Which is why our customers come back time and time again. You don’t have to feel shy or embarrassed during a bra fitting. Cool Your Fat Off! With patented built-in safety measures including Freeze Detect®, it is the only cold-based, non-surgical body contouring treatment that is cleared by the FDA. Patients can sit or lie comfortably and read, work on their laptop or even nap during the procedure. There are no needles, no special diets, no supplements and, most importantly, no downtime.
For the first time, Blair Plastic Surgery patients who do not want the risk, cost and downtime associated with surgery, have a real and effective choice for fat reduction and body contouring, Coolsculpting.
Target Patient
While not intended as a weight-reduction for overweight individuals, CoolSculpting is ideal for those looking to transform their bodies without diet, exercise or surgery. It is best suited for men and women seeking fat reduction and body sculpting without surgery and without disruption to their lifestyle. Every patient is unique, which is why Dr. Robert Louton recommends a customized treatment plan as part of the initial consultation. With a Treatment to Transformation (T2T) customized treatment plan, patients can achieve the most dramatic results using this safe and effective non-surgical procedure.
CoolSculpting is now available at Blair Plastic Surgery’s Altoona facility. Call 814-949-7280 for additional information, to schedule your complimentary consultation, or to sign up for our next
Cool Event, Thursday, March 20th, 2014 at 5:00 pm.
How CoolSculpting Works
During the CoolSculpting procedure, a non-invasive applicator delivers precisely controlled cooling to the treatment area and specifically targets underlying fat, leaving surface skin and other surrounding tissue unaffected. When fat cells are exposed to extreme cold, a process of natural removal is triggered, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The result is a noticeable and measurable reduction of fat in the treated area and the treated fat cells are gone for good. Patients can start to see results in as soon as three weeks following treatment, with the most dramatic results occurring after one to three months. While the results are not as immediate as liposuction, you do not have to take time off of work, and you are avoiding the risks associated with a surgical procedure.
Are There Any Risks
After the procedure some patients experience redness, tingling, minor bruising or numbness in the treated areas, but this is temporary. No pain medication or no anesthesia is required during treatment.
What Does It Feel Like
Transform yourself without diet, exercise or surgery.
When the applicator is first applied to the skin, it feels a little like a “tugging” sensation and you start to feel the cold. Each area treated takes approximately one hour. Additional treatments in the same or multiple areas may help enhance the desired aesthetic effect.
Coolsculpting is the revolutionary body contouring treatment that freezes and naturally eliminates fat from your body. There are no needles, no special diets, no exercise programs and best of all - no downtime. Developed by Harvard scientists to eliminate fat, Coolsculpting is FDAcleared, safe and clinically proven.
Safety
CoolSculpting is clinically proven to be a safe and effective treatment.

Eyebrows Are All The Rage Now Before
Getting-Ready… can be hectic, no matter if it’s to the store, to the doctor, to work, to dinner or out to somewhere else, we often feel hurried. If part of your morning routine is applying daily eyebrow pencil or eyeliner, those days can be been long gone. With the increasing popularity of permanent cosmetics many people have already shortened their morning routine. Why not consider permanent eyebrows or eyeliner or even lip color? These procedures have been done for decades. It’s not just in Hollywood anymore. As a matter of fact Lorie Litzinger of Bellefonte has been simplifying the lives of many women throughout PA and surrounding states by applying permanent cosmetics for over for 12 years. She’s done thousands of procedures on clients’ ranging in age from 18-94. If you are someone who cares about your appearance, no matter how busy you are, how tired you are , or how old you are, permanent makeup is time saving and convenient. And, for the times we just don’t want to bother with it..no worries…it’s already there. As we age and the ability to apply makeup nicely is being compromised, wouldn’t it be nice to know there is a solution for looking your best….effortlessly. Eyebrows are all the rage right now. Great eyebrows frame your eyes and give your entire face a more polished look. Lorie Litzinger works closely with each brow client to strategically place hair-like strokes of pigment to simulate brow hairs and will cluster them together to form a pretty and natural looking eyebrow. Even a small brow improvement can restore the confidence in your appearance. Check out the photos on this page and see the benefits of permanent eyebrow reshaping and restoring on a few her clients. Call Lorie Litzinger for a free consultation and see how she can improve your brows. “As things can become hectic at times...your brows can be one thing that doesn’t. Come in for a complementary brow consultation. I’ll be happy to show you what I can do with your brows. Check out my website www.secretsbylorie.com to see combo packaging for brows, eyeliner and lip color. Pamper yourself this year and let 2014 be the year you shorten your morning routine.” ~Lorie Litzinger, Secrets by Lorie

I read it in the Women’s Journal!
Fix It Once upon a time in a salon not so far far away a royal hairdresser (me) was asked to color a client’s hair. These were magic times when hairdressers had only red and green based permanent hair color to work with. The times were magic because it basically took magic to make human-looking hair color from formulas of only red and green. Princesses everywhere wore flat one-colored hair… for that was all they knew in their land.
Now once upon this time enters again the good chemist-fairies to banish evil ammonia forever. So now, royal hairdressers (me) are blessed with AMMONIA-FREE hair color. Princesses everywhere can have shimmering, lustrous, healthy permanent hair color. Now evil ammonia languishes in the dungeon of hair products passed. And the princesses lived happily ever after.
Then once upon a later time came the good chemist-fairies who created a full range of permanent hair color bases. This made humanlooking permanent hair color not only possible but truly easy! But alas, a problem still remained. To get the permanent hair color into the hair shaft required evil ammonia. Repeated applications of the evil ammonia dried and frayed the princesses’ royal hair. Evil ammonia also destroyed vital proteins in the hair, leaving it brittle and lifeless.
Brain Experts’ Best Memory Tricks
Part One
Do you wish your memory was a little sharper? Want to remember names and numbers as you could a few years back? Brain experts swear by the following simple techniques: Look, Snap, Connect to Remember Names
There are 3 steps to psychiatrist Gary Small’s (Director of the UCLA Center on Aging) favorite tactic which he calls “Look, Snap, Connect.” The first is to tell yourself that remembering a name is a priority. Step 1: Really focus (LOOK) on a name and face you want to remember Step 2: Create a visual snapshot (SNAP) of the name and face. Note a key visual characteristic: Silver hair? Big ears? Blue eyes? Dimples? Create an image about the name: A cat stands for Mrs. Katz, a dollar bill for someone named Bill. “I sometimes see a famous person with a similar name,” Small says. “So, Angela Shirnberger becomes Angelina Jolie wearing shiny shoes and eating a burger.” Step 3: Join the two images (CONNECT): Maybe blue-eyed Bill is a blue dollar bill, or Angela Shirnberger is a silver-haired Angelina Jolie with shiny shoes and eating a hamburger. March / April 2014
The simple act of thinking up these images helps cement them in your memory and increases the odds that the new name will materialize for you the next time you meet.
Use a Name Right Away to Remember It
If a new name goes in one ear and out the other, try to trap it inside your head by using it immediately, suggests University of Wisconsin geriatric psychiatrist Ken Robbins. When you meet John Jones, Robbins says, deliberately repeat his name: “Nice to meet you John”. Then use his name in conversation every few minutes while you talk: “So, John, how long have you been with your company?” and “That’s a great point, John.” As you walk away from that person, say the name again to yourself:” So that was John Jones of ABC Company.”
Picture it to Remember it

the task with something else happening around the same time, and then picture yourself following through when you see that cue, suggests memory specialist Mark McDaniel, a professor of psychology at Washington University in St. Louis. Say the mailman comes right before lunch. Now picture yourself getting up to go to lunch when you see the mail truck. Odds are that when the truck appears, that’s what you’ll do. “The concrete environmental event cues you. It triggers the intention,” McDaniel says. Studies have shown that women who visualize doing breast self-exams in the shower are more likely to actually do them. Diabetics are more likely to monitor blood glucose daily when the task is tied to another everyday event. More examples: Remember to take your new morning medication by imagining yourself doing so when you sip your coffee at breakfast. Remember to drop off dry cleaning by picturing doing so as you pass a particular landmark at that intersection.

Real Estate
The Year in Review Closed Sales increased by 7.0%, indicating that homes are moving and generally priced correctly. While reaching settlement has, involved more work it is clear that the extra documentation and verification have not hurt the market. If anything it has served to protect the market from transactions that are based upon poor financial decisions. Days on Market continued to drop, down 11.3% to an average of 71 days in Centre County. Percent of Original Price Received saw a modest increase to 95.0% (up 0.5%), continuing a strong trend in this area, reflecting accurate pricing, solid properties and motivated buyers. Supply of Inventory dropped 24.3% from last year, indicating that there is strong buyer activity, an adequate supply of quality homes and it is good time to either buy or sell. Considering the fact that interest rates continue to be low and the economy seems to be heading in the right direction it would appear that 2014 will be a good year for real estate, especially in central PA.
Statistics for 2013 have been compiled and things look pretty good. We have returned to a more traditional market and it has all the signs of stability and staying power. This makes it easier for consumers to make good choices and act with confidence. It is important to note that each locality is different and that consumers should always refer to their local real estate agents for specific and accurate data for their area. Some of the statements below refer to national trends and others are based upon statistics drawn from the Centre County Association of Realtors multiple listing system (MLS) and relate to Centre County ONLY. Knowing the local conditions is paramount in making sound decisions. On the national level home sales and prices were trending higher, while Days on Market (DOM), inventory and foreclosure loads were lower, all signs of a healthier market. This was true for the vast majority of the country. In Centre County the market was just as good, or better. In evaluating the strength of the market I consider factors such as New Listings, Closed Sales, DoM, Percent of Original Price Received, and the Supply of Inventory (sometimes presented through an Absorption Rate) as the best indicators. In all of these categories the direction was positive, indicating an improving and stronger marketplace. I prefer to compare year-to-year, as opposed to quarterly figures, in this case looking at 2013 vs 2012. New Listings for 2013 saw a small drop (0.9%) indicating that there is an adequate selection but the market is not overburdened. Homeowners realize that it is a good time to sell as there are buyers but people are not desperate. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Consider After Breast Surgery Natural-looking Option?
LoriesBeautySalon.com
Areola repigmentation is an elective procedure that is the final step for many in breast reconstruction. Once medical treatments have been completed, the option is worth consideration. Today many women choose to have nipple/areola tattooing because it is less invasive than tissue grafting, heals quickly and looks most natural when applied by an expert. Soft tissue can be unpredictable and so the breast mounds and/or scars can be constant reminders of cancer. Clients feel that Areola Tattooing

Drug Free Solutions for ADD/ADHD ADD/ADHD have reached epidemic levels leaving many parents wondering “Isn’t there something we can do besides drugs?” ALL medications come with side effects and the potential for abuse. Nobody knows the long term effects these will have on our children. Now parents have a completely safe and effective option - Neurofeedback. In 2012 the American Academy of Pediatrics elevated neurofeedback to a level 1 “best support” treatment option for ADHD. As early as the 1970’s Dr. Joel Lubar of the University of Tennessee began pioneering the use of neurofeedback for ADHD. There are more than 25 published studies and 100 articles demonstrating it’s efficacy.

What is Brain Mapping and How Can It Help? A Brain Map is a diagnostic procedure in which a cap is placed on the patients’ head and is connected to a computer. The sensors inside of the brain map cap are able to measure and record brainwaves in five different areas of the brain. The recordings are then sent off and compared to a normative database and a report is created. This report shows if there is brainwave/neurological dysfunction, as well as the degree of dysfunction. The dysfunction of the four different brainwaves has been associated with specific symptoms in the neurobehavioral spectrum.

Huntingdon
My hometown was founded in 1767, and sits in a wonderful scenic valley in the middle of the Alleghenies. The Juniata River begins just west of town and the Raystown Branch of the Juniata features a remarkably pristine outdoor recreation area – Raystown Lake, which stretches for nearly 30 miles and is dotted with resorts, marinas, and campgrounds. With a population of just over 7,000 in 2012, Huntingdon is the county seat, home to Juniata College, and was named by Budget Travel magazine's readers as 5th Coolest Small Town in the United States. But don’t take their word for it. Come see my hometown for yourself – a slice of small town America packed with history, Colonial architecture, and friendly neighbors. Here’s an idea to make your Huntingdon getaway even more picturesque. We’re located directly on the Amtrak Pennsylvanian route, with the station just a two blocks from downtown. 1937 Cord, one of dozens of vintage vehicles at The Swigart Museum, the oldest antique auto museum in the country and second only to Henry Ford’s in size. What To Expect On Your Visit To The Audiologist 1. Some insurance companies require an order or a referral from the family physician for hearing testing. If you suspect you have hearing loss, please report it to your physician. 2. The Audiologist will inspect your ear canal for wax prior to your test. Too much ear wax can cause hearing loss and will need to be removed by the family doctor or ear doctor prior to the hearing test. 3. The hearing test consists of several parts, including pure tone testing and speech testing. 4. Other testing may include tympanometry and OAE. 5. The results will be discussed at length. 6. If further evaluation is necessary, a referral will be made to the Ear, Nose and Throat specialists. 7. If appropriate, hearing aid style, size and costs will be discussed. 8. If appropriate, assistive listening devices will be discussed. These include amplified telephones, closed captioned telephones, amplified alarm clocks, amplified smoke alarms, TV amplifiers, etc. Even if you haven’t noticed problems with your hearing, health professionals recommend you have your hearing checked regularly once you reach the age of 65. Contact your local Audiologist and schedule your appointment.

3D MAMMOGRAM, THE LATEST IN BREAST HEALTH TECHNOLOGY NOW AT SUSQUEHANNA HEALTH If you have dense breast tissue, you may already know that additional diagnostic measures are recommended to thoroughly assess your breast health. Now the most recent advancement in breast examination technology, breast tomosynthesis or 3D mammography, is available at Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center to aid in detection of the smallest tumors in women with dense breast tissue.
Approximately one-third of the population has dense breast composition. Breast density is divided into four categories from (1) entirely fat – very little density; (2) scattered fibroglandular densities – minimally dense; (3) heterogeneously or moderately dense; and (4) extremely dense. Women in the latter two categories are identified as having dense breasts. Beginning in February, mammogram providers are required to tell women which category they are in.
While traditional mammography is excellent for screening women with low breast density, when breasts are moderately to extremely dense, the breast tissue can hide small tumors and prevent them from being detected. For more than a decade, the professionals at the Breast Health Center offered whole breast ultrasound as a supplement to 2D mammograms for women with dense breast tissue. The addition of 3D mammography provides an even more sensitive tool in detecting breast cancer in these patients.
THE 3D ADVANTAGE
“Early detection gives our patients the best possible advantage in their breast cancer treatment. This diagnostic technology is a significant advancement in detecting the smallest tumors in women with dense breast tissue. It essentially puts all women on the same playing field in terms of the sensitivity of the mammogram exam,” explains Dr. Hanae Bahr, the Breast Health Center’s dedicated breast fellow trained radiologist.
A 3D mammogram is performed in the same manner as a traditional mammogram; in fact the equipment and exam room layout remain the same. The difference rests in the camera angles and number of images taken as the breast is scanned. The images create a 3D rendering of the breast where small tumors may be pinpointed. There is no increase in radiation exposure for patients receiving a 3D mammogram, and because the need
for additional imaging may be minimized, exposure may decrease over a lifetime.
“With every advance we are helping to improve the rate of detection and overall outcomes in treating breast cancer in our region, and that’s what it is all about.” Dr. Susan Branton

“We are pleased to bring this technology to women in our community who can benefit from the additional level of imaging,” says Dr. Susan Branton, FACS, medical director at the Breast Health Center. “Our Breast Health Center is dedicated to giving women an advantage in breast care and continues to lead the way with whole breast ultrasound and now as the only provider in the region with 3D technology. With every advance we are helping to improve the rate of detection and overall outcomes in treating breast cancer in our region, and that’s what it is all about.” Women over the age of 40 are encouraged to have a yearly mammogram.

What Finances Must Be Disclosed In a Divorce?
Often, one spouse pays the bills and does the bookkeeping for the family. While this can be practical, it can leave the other spouse with little knowledge of the family’s financial situation. For this reason, a spouse might fear that the other spouse will conceal money or other financial assets in preparation for a divorce contest or settlement. The rules regarding dividing the marital estate in Pennsylvania is a little like carving a pie with a spoon. It is a very inexact and messy endeavor. Some of the “easy” items to know include: 1) Federal and state income tax returns for the past three years; 2) Bank, retirement and investment account statements for the past three years; 3) Copies of loan applications within the past three years; 4) Four recent pay stubs; 5) Documentation of health insurance; 6) Copies of any financial statements prepared in the past three years as well as a current financial statement. It is also important to know what are the liabilities and debts in the marital property. These items include: Consumer Credit; Mortgages; Lines of Credit; and personal loans. These are why I always recommend running a credit background check on yourself in order to “discover” if any credit cards or loans have been obtained in your name without your knowledge. Then there are more “advanced” property issues include the value of business interests; trusts; life insurance policies; deferred compensation plans; stock options; custodial and educational accounts. If you fear that your spouse is hiding money from you, then you
need the help of a lawyer. A lawyer uses the process of ‘discovery’ to uncover and disclose aspects of the case previously unknown to one or more of the parties. Discovery often includes the use of interrogatories; depositions and requests for production of documents. Other discovery tools include: seeking entry onto property and requests for admission. It is no secret that divorce can be expensive. However, if you believe your spouse is hiding money and assets from you, it is important to hire an attorney accustomed to handling such matters.
