Penn State Lewistown Center to Offer Medical Lab Technology Degree This Fall By Deborah A. Benedetti

Medical lab technicians are members of a medical team focused on diagnosis and treatment of disease or injury and promoting the well-being of patients. This career is ideal for adults who want to retrain for a health career, as well as for high school and homeschooled students who are interested in working in the health field. The Penn State Lewistown Center is collaborating with Penn State Hazleton, which has offered the MLT program since 1979, to bring the program to central Pennsylvania. Courses will be delivered through the Penn State Video Learning Network, and lab sessions will be held at the Lewistown Center’s Health and Science Lab. The MLT program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences. “This is a high-quality, rigorous program. Graduates are very knowledgeable and ready for work,” said Kirk A. Gilbert, Lewistown Center science coordinator and rural health educator. “A significant component of the MLT program is the 600plus hours that students spend in clinical skills training at medical sites.” Gilbert, who heads the Health and Science Lab, is handling arrangements for the clinical training sites.

Demand for medical and clinical laboratory technicians—the professionals who help detect, diagnose, and treat disease—is outpacing supply because of increased medical testing and retirements in the profession. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that employment will grow 16 percent through 2018. To help meet this demand in central Pennsylvania, the Penn State Lewistown Center is launching a two-year associate in science in medical laboratory technology (MLT) degree program this fall.

Sharon Burdick knows all about clinical skills training. A medical technologist at Lewistown Hospital since 2001, she said, “The clinical laboratory is made up of several specialized areas, which include chemistry, hematology, microbiology, and immunohematology (blood bank). These different departments work together to give physicians insight into the state of their patients’ health.” Burdick said she enjoys “working hand-in-hand with a team—like a CSI investigation—behind the scenes to come up with a solution to help a patient. Every day is different. We could use more people interested in medical laboratory science.”

“We’re committed to helping Lewistown Center graduates find employment,” said Lewistown Center Director Tom Walker. “Medical laboratory technology is a wonderful health career. Having training available close to home will help central Pennsylvanians prepare for jobs in a field with ample employment opportunities. MLT graduates are highly placeable. These positions offer good pay for graduates who get their certification. This is a career that graduates can carry with them wherever they go.”

Class size is limited for the medical laboratory technology associate degree program. To learn more, visit www.PennStateLewistown.com/MLT online, or call the Penn State Lewistown Center at 717-248-9618 to talk with a student support team member.

The Lewistown Center is partnering with the Lewistown Hospital on the MLT degree. Kay Hamilton, president/chief executive officer of Lewistown Hospital, said,

3D Movies Identify Kids' Vision Problems From Avatar to hand-held video games, 3D has surged in popularity. But how many parents know that trouble viewing 3D can indicate treatable vision conditions? “The ability to perceive depth in a 3D presentation turns out to be a highly sensitive test of a range of vision health indicators and much more sensitive than the standard eye chart that has been in use for 150 years.” —American Optometric Association

dren with this type of problem may struggle to copy from a board, lean unusually close to books, or experience headaches in the afternoon or with reading. • Dizziness and nausea—This can result from poor integration of visual information with vestibular information in the brain. Motion sickness in the car or the 3D theater can indicate a visual problem. “I can see better. Words no longer move on the page and I do not lose my place while reading.” ~ Devon, age 8 “Devon no longer sees double. He can read faster and not lose his place. He does not get motion sickness and he now enjoys riding the rides at the amusement park. He can now catch a ball when it is thrown to him...Reading is faster and smoother...It is easier for him to maintain his honor roll status.” ~ Stephanie Neidig, Montgomery, PA When Devon experienced discomfort while viewing a 3D movie, the family didn’t realize there was a correlation with Devon’s headaches in school. They didn’t realize that Devon’s vision was related to his frequent car sickness. Of course, previous exams had indicated good eyesight. That changed when optometrist Dr. Daniel Frantz, who practices at the Walmart Vision Center in Lewistown, found that Devon’s eyes didn’t coordinate well and referred him to Dr. Marcus Myers at the Vision & Learning Center in Muncy. Devon’s motion sickness and discomfort in the 3D movie theater have been resolved, but the most important changes may be that his reading is faster, homework takes less time, and headaches with reading are gone. THE 3D's OF 3D VIEWING • Discomfort • Dizziness • Lack of Depth Experiencing one of the 3D's can indicate treatable conditions, but a good 3D experience does not rule out vision problems. • Refraction Problems—Nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism • Lack of binocular vision (strabismus)—When the eyes are not properly aligned, the inputs from the two eyes are not successfully combined in the brain. This can impact sports, driving a car, or threading a needle. • Lazy eye (amblyopia)—When one eye dominates the other and visual signals from the non-dominant eye are ignored by the brain, the result can be permanent vision loss without prompt intervention. • Eye coordination difficulties (such as convergence insufficiency)—When there is difficulty keeping the two eyes aligned, this can cause fatigue, loss of place in text, and avoidance of close-up work like reading. Symptoms overlap with ADHD. CI can be hard to detect because eyesight is usually 20/20. • Eye-focusing (accommodation) difficulties—The eyes need to precisely change focus when viewing objects at different distances. Stroke Rehabilitation was an “All in the Family” Choice Retired Centre County resident Donald Miller recently had a stroke and suffered from left side paralysis, which affected his left arm and leg, the left side of his face, and his speech. Don, 69, was treated at Mount Nittany Medical Center until he was ready for rehabilitation. He was given a choice of a skilled nursing facility, or HealthSouth, and Don knew where he wanted to go. “My wife and I chose HealthSouth because I wanted to recover as fast as possible and get back home,” he recalls. Don knew this was possible at HealthSouth because his brother and his brother-in-law were former HealthSouth rehabilitation patients. “With two HealthSouth success stories in my family, I knew that I wanted that higher level of care,” he says. Don came to HealthSouth with a goal: get back to doing the activities that he loved most. Driving was a priority again, too. Don’s wife Kitty describes her husband: “Don is very active and independent. He loves working around the house and yard; not much will slow him down!” Don stayed at HealthSouth Nittany Valley hospital for sixteen days as an inpatient. “With three hours of therapy a day, I was able to improve quickly,” Don recalls. “That was the goal – to get better and get back home.” Three hours of daily therapy included speech, physical and occupational therapy. “They stay right with you in therapy,” Don says. “Everyone was friendly and helpful, and the nursing staff was outstanding.” While a top-notch team of rehabilitation experts can help a patient make great strides, HealthSouth also acknowledges the importance of a good support system for patients. Case Manager Michelle Heverly was inspired by Don and his family. “Don’s story of rehabilitation is a ray of hope for our patients and families. Successful rehabilitation needs patience, dedication and the willingness to work hard. Don had all of those qualities,” Heverly says. Don also had a strong support system. Heverly recalls how Don’s wife, Kitty, was dedicated to Don’s recovery. “She was here at the hospital every day, to encourage him and participate in his therapy sessions. That kind of support makes rehabilitation even better.” “I would recommend HealthSouth to anyone,” Don says. “I had one shot at rehabilitation. At HealthSouth, that’s what they do, and the higher level of care, including more therapy, allows you to make the most of your time.” Don is enjoying “normal life at home again,” and back to doing the activities that he loves. He comes to HealthSouth Outpatient Therapy three days a week, and continues to see improvements. May is National Stroke Awareness Month. HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital has a highly specialized stroke rehabilitation program that is certified by the Joint Commission on Accreditation for Healthcare Organizations. Monthly support group meetings for stroke survivors and their families are held at HealthSouth Nittany Valley and are open to the public. For more information, or a tour, call (814) 359-3421. Health process. Estrogen has been shown to encourage the inflammatory response in the airways. During the menstrual cycle when hormones are at their highest, bronchial sensitivity (called hyper reactivity) is increased. Psychological studies have shown a higher incidence of anxiety and depression in COPD patients. Women experienced more symptoms in shortness of breath with higher levels of anxiety and depression when compared with men. Women have more psychiatric comorbidities and psychiatric therapy may reduce hospitalizations, improve work status, and lung function. COPD patients are frequently treated with corticosteroids, both oral and inhaled. Studies have shown that osteoporosis associated with COPD is caused, in part, by chronic corticosteroid use. Available data suggests that bone mineral density is inversely proportional to the severity of COPD. (The more severe your COPD the less bone density is present.) Men and women have differences in cigarette consumption, anatomy, hormones, psychology, and osteoporosis. Awareness of these gender differences may lead to specific therapeutic considerations in women and men with COPD.

Q&A

COPD and WOMEN There is no lack of topics concerning the gender differences in lung disease. This article will concern itself with a common pulmonary disease, known as COPD, or Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease. COPD is a syndrome which is characterized by reduction in airflow due to obstruction and narrowing of the airways. Symptoms include shortness of breath, wheezing, and chronic cough. Cigarette smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke are the primary causes of COPD. COPD limits physical activity, impairs social interaction, and results in frequent office visits and hospitalizations. It is the third leading cause of death in Americans. COPD prevalence was higher in men than in women, but in the last three decades, there has been a distinct paradigm shift. The overall number of women dying from COPD has surpassed men. Several factors are associated with this gender shift. They include greater cigarette consumption in women, some anatomic and hormonal differences, anxiety and depression, along with the high occurrence of osteoporosis in accordance with corticosteroid therapy. Increased cigarette smoking for women began in the second half of the twentieth century, and by the 1980’s twenty-five percent of adult women were smokers. This trend began when the tobacco industry started advertising cigarette smoking as a symbol of independence for women. Smoking cessation is hampered by fear of weight gain and heightened sensitivity to nicotine and withdrawal, as well as the timing of a quit relative to the menstrual cycle. Adult female lungs are generally smaller with a smaller alveolar space and narrower airway diameter. A woman who smokes the same pack years as a man is more affected by concentrated tar in her smaller, less active airspace. Chronic inflammation is a distinct part of the COPD syndrome and hormones play an important role in modulating the inflammatory May / June 2012

Breast Lumps:

The Change with Age All breast lumps are not created equal. The vast majority of breast lumps are benign. Your age will determine what a lump may be and how it will be handled. Even benign lumps should be removed in many cases, so all distinct breast lumps should be evaluated by a physician. The earliest of breast lumps to be brought to medical attention occurs in pre-adolescent girls. It is often a central, sometimes tender mass which gets mothers very concerned. This is the breast bud or developing breast. Removal of this “lump” will result in the absence of all breast development on that side of the body Young females often present with an almond shaped firm mobile mass. On ultrasound these masses have very sharp borders and appear solid. It may grow with time and may grow during pregnancy. It is called a fibroadenoma and is benign in nature. When greater than 2 inches in size it is referred to as a giant fibroadenoma or phyllodes tumor. Because of its persistent nature and propensity to grow, this tumor should be removed. Simple cysts become common in the peri-menopausal ages. A physical exam can differentiate these from other masses. On exam the cyst can be compressed in its center. When they enlarge they can often become painful and simple drainage with a needle in the doctor’s office resolve 75% of these cysts. Once again ultrasound is a very good tool to distinguish cysts from other masses. Another mass of the peri-menopausal age is one caused by fibrocystic changes. Quite often these are not distinct in nature and painful and more prominent just before a period. If a distinct mass arises it may need to be biopsied, but for the most part these tender masses come and go and tend to blend into the breast and require no intervention. A distinct painless rock in the breast is the last and most important mass to be discussed. It can occur at any age but definitely is seen more often as women get older. This of course is breast cancer. A mass like this in a post menopausal patient leaves little doubt of its nature. In younger women, these masses can be confusing, but to a skilled practitioner, there is little doubt when they are encountered. If a cancer is suspected, a needle or core biopsy should be done first to confirm the diagnosis. All distinct breast lumps with the exception of simple cysts should be removed. If a cancer is suspected, it should be sampled by needle first so it can be removed completely during the initial surgery. When in doubt seek medical attention for a professional breast exam. As stated earlier, the vast majority of lumps will be benign, but if a cancer is present the key is to catch it early.

Housing Crisis to End in 2012 as Banks Loosen Credit Standards cancellations were the result of a potential buyer not qualifying for a loan. Additionally, Capital Economics says “any improvement in credit conditions won’t be significant enough to generate actual house price gains,” and potential ramifications from the euro-zone pose a threat to future credit availability.

By Krista Franks Brock

Capital Economics expects the housing crisis to end this year, according to a report released Tuesday. One of the reasons: loosening credit. The analytics firm notes the average credit score required to attain a mortgage loan is 700. While this is higher than scores required prior to the crisis, it is constant with requirements one year ago. Additionally, a Fed Senior Loan Officer Survey found credit requirements in the fourth quarter were consistent with the past three quarters. However, other market indicators point not just to a stabilization of mortgage lending standards, but also a loosening of credit availability. Banks are now lending amounts up to 3.5 times borrower earnings. This is up from a low during the crisis of 3.2 times borrower earnings. Banks are also loosening loan-to-value ratios (LTV), which Capital Economics denotes “the clearest sign yet of an improvement in mortgage credit conditions.” In contrast to a low of 74 percent reached in mid-2010, banks are now lending at 82 percent LTV. While credit conditions may have loosened slightly, some potential homebuyers are still struggling with credit requirements. In fact, Capital Economics points out that in November 8 percent of contract

Peripheral Neuropathy?

If You Suffer From A Single One Of These Torturous Symptoms

– Numbness, Tingling, Burning or Sharp Nerve Pain – THIS MAY BE THE MOST IMPORTANT INFORMATION YOU HAVE EVER READ IN YOUR LIFE!

Neuropathy affects every part of your life - walking, sitting, sleeping, your ability to enjoy relationships, socialize and so much more. If you have tried “everything” (physical therapy, Lyrica®, Neurontin® or other medications) without getting the lasting results you want then you may be a candidate for our program. There is a simple reason that these treatments fail...because they only cover up your symptoms, not heal the damaged nerves. We all know this to be true...There is a tremendous difference between covering up your symptoms and fixing the underlying problem. Why settle for “band- aid care” when you could potentially correct the problem?

I’m offering you a risk-free introduction to this program. For a limited time you can receive 2 “No-Obligation” visits if you call before June 30, 2012. Here’s what you get: • A thorough case history and review of past medical records. • Toronto Qualification Exam - scores how bad your neuropathy is and what type (large or small nerve fiber disease). • My analysis and expertise in evaluating and helping neuropathy patients from a functional perspective. If you are a candidate for my program I will review the reasons why and give you a written treatment plan. If you are not a candidate I will again tell you why. If you are tired of the institutionalized medical merry-go-round of cover-up care then you must try this program. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

What if you could tap into the natural scientific principles of nerve healing? I asked myself that very question: What makes a nerve healthy? And, what causes nerve damage? How can I naturally “tip-the-balance” toward healing the nerves while also removing what was damaging the nerves?

Correct diagnosis + correct treatments = Best Results Possible and Relief.

The Single Most Important Solution To Your Neuropathy was 3 years in the making... It took thousands of dollars and hundreds of hours away from my family, researching, reading, talking with experts in the scientific community and racking my brain in order to create my Neuropathy Recovery Program. Finally, this program is available to you. A powerful combination of Functional Neurology (aka Brain-Based Therapy) and Lab Based Nutrition that packs a powerful punch against neuropathy. The goods news is that the principles behind my Neuropathy Recovery Program work with both diabetic and non-diabetic types of neuropathy. How does it work? By stimulating the nerve and supporting its need for fuel and activation. Fuel comes in the form of oxygen and glucose achieved through diet, lifestyle and quality supplements. Activation is accomplished using specific neurologically based therapies. Patients in the program know the insiders secrets to recovery. They have already received their individualized Neuropathy Recovery Program and are having amazing results. Dean W., 83 years old, 20 years of diabetes, retired clergymen after 3 visits. “It felt like old dried leather was tacked to my feet and toes and now I can actually feel skin again. The sensation of the foot increased at least 50%. I’m walking better already. I feel more balanced. I’m certainly looking forward to feeling even better. Nobody, that I know of, is doing this kind of work.” Let me say this, I am not promising that I can help everyone. I don’t even know if you qualify for the Neuropathy Recovery Program, that is yet to be determined, and requires a proper history and examination. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Why hasn’t your doctor told you about this approach? Because it doesn’t fit into the model of give a medication to cover up the problem. This is a functional approach to correct the problem, not temporarily cover up your pain. Here's What To Do Now Call today (814)238-0232 and we can get you scheduled for your consultation and exam as soon as there’s an opening. When you call, tell the receptionist you’d like to come in for the Neuropathy Recovery Evaluation so she can get you on the schedule and make sure you receive proper credit for this special offer. I love the feeling of empowerment you have given me. I have lost 17.5 pounds...I didn't quite make the 20 pounds, but let me explain. With just three weeks to go, I broke my foot. I thought,” Great, another set back.” But then I stopped and said, “WAIT- stop that thinking! You know what needs to be done! I managed to stick with the food part of the program, and with some alterations I did work out. I love the fact that I no longer give food the power it used to have over me. Before this journey I would have grabbed a half gallon of ice cream and sat on the bed eating it all and crying, but not now! I sat down with my mom and my sister and we discussed my feelings, and moved on. Imagine that...no ice cream to make it better! I am wearing a size I haven't worn in many years. Thank you Curves for teaching me the healthy way to live my life!” See you at Curves!

Cutting-Edge Technology Working for You, Right Here Reducing Radiation Exposure During CT Scans Finding ways to reduce the radiation dose for routine CT scans has been an ongoing concern for many years, and now Lewistown Hospital has implemented technology to help alleviate those concerns. While there is exposure to radiation during a CT scan, they are an important part of the disease diagnostic process. CT scans are also often used for planning, guiding, and monitoring disease therapy. Now, with new software and technology in place at Lewistown Hospital, radiation exposure during a CT has been reduced by 40 percent for each exam. A software-based medical technique from General Electric called Adaptive Statistical Iterative Reconstruction (ASIR) has led to a lower amount of radiation in CT scans while maintaining accurate results. This new technique uses far less radiation without compromising image quality. What this means for someone in need of a CT scan is a safer, more accurate image of the inside of the body. Lewistown Hospital always has what’s best for their patients in mind. Discuss the risks of a CT scan or any imaging services with your physician.

How to Qualify for Benefits to Cover Long-Term Care Expenses

aid for at least five years from the date of the transfer, you should not have to disclose the transfer. Despite the numerous restrictions the Deficit Reduction Act (DRA) has placed on Medicaid eligibility, we are able to assist individuals and families in developing long-term care plans to avoid depleting their assets should they become ill and need long-term care. For those individuals who are already in a nursing home, despite the harsh new Medicaid rules, we continue to help nursing home residents qualify for Medicaid benefits while maximizing the amount of money they are able to protect. Keep in mind that Medicaid planning is very fact specific and not all planning techniques work in every situation. Before spending down all of your assets, contact us to schedule a FREE initial consultation to discuss Medicaid benefits and to review your planning options.

Nursing home care can cost more than $97,000 per year, which can quickly deplete an individual or couple’s life savings. Medicare does not pay for long-term care, so when this type of care is needed, if you do not have long-term care insurance, you must either pay out-of-pocket or apply for Medicaid. The Medicaid program that pays for nursing home care has specific eligibility requirements for individuals and couples. Generally, people think they have to be impoverished before Medicaid will begin paying for their care. However, in many situations, property and assets can be saved from the cost of care with careful planning both prior to and after nursing home admission. Qualifying for Medicaid benefits for long-term care has always been confusing; however, the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 made this cumbersome process even more difficult. The Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 (DRA), which was signed into law by former President Bush on February 8, 2006, imposes many restrictions on when and if you will qualify for benefits to cover your long-term care expenses. Prior to the DRA, an applicant for Medicaid benefits could give away assets in order to qualify for long-term care benefits. The general rule was that for every $6,700 you gave away, you were ineligible for Medicaid benefits for one month. This “ineligibility” period began the month in which the gift was made. For example, if you had transferred $67,000 in January 2006, you would have been ineligible for Medicaid benefits for long-term care for 10 months. This ineligibility period would have started January 1, 2006, and continued through October 31, 2006. Under the DRA, transferring assets makes a person ineligible for Medicaid (for long-term care services) for one month for every $8,112.13 given away during what is known as the “look-back period” (the period immediately before a person applies for Medicaid). Currently, the maximum look-back period is five years. The ineligibility period does not begin until the Medicaid application is filed and the applicant is determined to be eligible for Medicaid if it were not for the transfer(s). Transfers (or gifts) are subject to the Medicaid ineligibility period described above. For example, if you transferred $100,000 today, a Medicaid ineligibility period of approximately 12.3 months would be created ($100,000 ÷ $8,112.13 = 12.3). If you would need long-term care within the five year “lookback period,” the $100,000 gift would need to be reported to the county assistance office at the time of the application. This 12.3 month ineligibility period would begin on the date when the Medicaid application is filed and you are determined to be eligible for Medicaid if it were not for the transfer. This means that you would be required to privately pay for your in-home or nursing home care for at least 12.3 months. However, if you did not apply for MedicMay / June 2012

BreaSt cancer Support Group proviDeS inSpiration Following a lumpectomy to remove cancer from her breast in June 2004, Christa Stimpson, now 54, got more bad news.

Six lymph nodes tested positive for cancer. The spread of the disease hit home for Christa, since her father had lost the battle to breast cancer in 1992. Heartened by treatment advances since her father’s illness, Christa worked with the professionals at Susquehanna Health’s Kathryn Candor Lundy Breast Health Center and the Susquehanna Health Cancer Center at Divine Providence Hospital. “My husband and I did some research,

and we were very comfortable with what Susquehanna Health had to offer and confident with all of the physicians on the team. The treatment I got here is the same I would have gotten at Sloan-Kettering, but this was much more convenient,” explains Christa.

Just as she finished chemotherapy and radiation treatments in January 2005, a dear friend and then her daughter, 28, were diagnosed with breast cancer. They asked Christa to accompany them to a breast cancer support group at the Cancer Center that fall. She has been attending ever since.

The support group, which meets at 7 pm on the last Monday of each month, also invites physicians and other professionals to speak on topics ranging from health to fashion.

“I had great support from my husband, friends, coworkers and family so I never felt a need to go to a support

Christa’s involvement is one way she gives back to those who helped her. “I continue attending the support group meetings so young, newly diagnosed women can hear me say ‘I’m an eight year survivor’ and be

inspired just as I was inspired by the long-term survivors when I first came to the group,” says Christa. “That is so uplifting to me.”

Pictured above are June Zimmerman (left) and Christa Stimpson (right) in the Susquehanna Health Cancer Center where breast cancer support group meetings are held. June is the Oncology Social Worker for the center and has been facilitating the support group for 15 years. The group is open to all women with a breast cancer diagnosis; advocates like Christa are eager to welcome and help new women however they can.

He handles the medical and surgical treatment of hearing, ear infections, balance disorders, ear noise (tinnitus) and nerve pain. Dr. Freije commonly treats patients with nasal obstruction, as well as chronic sinus problems that can make it difficult to breathe or cause head pain. Other disorders that Dr. Freije treats are those related to speech and swallowing, including diseases of the larynx (voice box) and the upper aero-digestive tract or esophagus. He also treats patients with reflux conditions and performs tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy procedures at the Mount Nittany Surgical Center.

How’s your hearing? Leslie Purcell, AuD, is an audiologist at Mount Nittany Physician Group’s Otolaryngology practice in Boalsburg. She collaborates with James Freije, MD, to identify the appropriate treatment for patients with hearing and balance disorders by performing and interpreting specialized evaluations. Purcell also provides hearing aid services, pediatric hearing screenings and vertigo evaluations. To determine how well you hear, she suggests asking yourself the following questions:

Do you have difficulty hearing over the telephone? Do you have trouble following the conversation when two or more people are talking at the same time? Do people complain that you turn the TV volume too high? Do you have to strain to understand conversation? Do you have trouble hearing in a noisy background? Do you find yourself asking people to repeat themselves? Do you misunderstand what others are saying and respond inappropriately? Do you have trouble understanding the speech of women and children? Do people get annoyed because you misunderstand what they say?

When assisting patients diagnosed with neck, throat or mouth cancer, Dr. Freije works with the Mount Nittany Medical Center cancer team that includes radiation oncology, patient navigators, and many other services to help with the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. James E. Freije, MD, MPH, FACS

Self-Esteem

Prompted by a fitness-related email I got, I started to take note of how many people had complained about their bodies to me - in just one day. SIX! Five women and one man - in one day had been so focused on a self-perceived negative about their body that they verbally bashed themselves to me and a group of others. (Truth be told - six women, because I’m included)

one thing that you like about yourself: every day. Allow yourself to look beyond that first thing you see - which is almost never your best attribute - and find that something that you can feel good about. It’s there! So find it and appreciate it. Surround yourself with people who appreciate you and themselves the way they are today. A support system. Surrounding yourself with positive, optimistic people is a crucial aid to your own self-esteem. None of this is to say that we don’t deserve to constantly strive for self-improvement! It’s imperative that we strive daily to better ourselves. We’re either climbing or sliding – no one is standing still, and the self-improvement journey alone will boost our self-esteem. I know first-hand, the positive emotional effects of setting, reaching and redefining my own goals over the years, whether they be in my relationships, my career and most obviously, my health. Working on yourself, both inside and out, and choosing to be around others who do the same, will pay rich dividends to your self-worth bank. It’s not always easy, but let’s make it a priority to remind ourselves that with everything that may still be a work-in-progress, there are also things that are great about us just the way they are!

(By the way, I’m Chanel. That’s me in the picture to the left... at 178lbs... at 5’ tall. To say that self-bashing was a part of my daily routine, is an understatement.)

So this got me thinking... maybe it’s the fact that our business, \ki’netik\ FITNESS, is a place where people are naturally concerned about or at least aware of their physical fitness, which may make it more prevalent in my life, but I have reason to believe that there’s much more to it. We are really hard on ourselves! Comparing ourselves to the impossibly perfect images we see on TV and in magazines, “I wish I had her ___,” “Why can’t my ___ look like that,” and so on. It’s enough to send anyone into a self-loathing spiral. And let me tell you, being a ‘morbidly obese’ young adult lends itself to plenty of self-loathing! Our children hear us complain about our bodies; our friends, who may look to us for encouragement or support hear us, our co-workers who may depend on us to be strong, confident equals, hear us - and it’s not good! Negative self talk is detrimental in many ways that reach far beyond the obvious cuts to our self-esteem. At \ki’netik\ we’re constantly reinforcing positive thoughts, noting that negative self talk is absolutely toxic to reaching your goals, let alone your self-esteem. We denounce negativity daily, and yet just yesterday, I heard seven people engage in it within our walls. I’m guilty of it too! And I’m willing to bet I’m not alone. So, this month I’m challenging you...and me to look in the mirror and say out loud, May/ June 2012

(Here I am again today, about 40lbs lighter and still on my own journey; pictured here with crucial members of my support system, Missy Quick & Berta Baker!) Scott & Chanel Ludwig opened \ki’netik\ FITNESS in 2008 in State College.

Adding Value to Your Home People are looking to improve the value and efficiency of their homes. This can be done through retrofitting, remodeling and renovating, using new technologies and strategies, as well as time proven methods, at a level that fits any budget.

ing, radiant floor heating, high quality insulation, water conservation systems, geo-thermal heating systems, as well as the integration of solar energy systems. Homes are a long term investment for most people. Making improvements that will increase the value and efficiency of their homes, as well as improving the quality of our lives, makes sense in both the short and long term.

Retrofitting involves small projects that produce a quick return on investment (ROI). Examples include changing light bulbs, using water saving devices, improving insulation, and the use of toxin-free cleaners. Remodeling is more involved but will lead to a larger increase in value. Examples include purchasing Energy Star appliances, improving insulation and ventilation flows, use of passive solar principles, highefficiency heat pumps, and on-demand hot water systems. Professional advice should be sought before doing remodeling projects.

Renovation is even more involved and should include professional consultation. Projects require a longer period of time for evaluation, planning and installation, as well as a more significant outlay of money. However, the ROI will pay for the projects and the associated increase in value will improve over time as more people will want homes that are energy efficient and sustainable. Some examples of renovations include the use of high-efficiency toilets, reflective roof-

Uncle Walt’s Incredible Cottage Cheese Pie by Kim Kowalczyk

B

aking is a family passion, with recipes handed down from generation to generation. As my father’s family emigrated from Poland, cooking and baking were an oral tradition. My Uncle Walter, a World War II veteran who became an accomplished engineer and cook, tweaked and measured many of these recipes, and wrote up this family favorite. The original recipe used only cottage cheese. Whether you use only cottage cheese or a mixture of cottage cheese and ricotta as I prefer, you’ll find it has an incredibly light texture — great for Spring! The pie makes a lovely breakfast or dessert pie, and may be served warm or cold. No additional topping needed!

Re-think Your At one point in your life, you decided that getting a tattoo was a good idea. Years later, you’re a different person and while the tattoo made a bold statement way back then, it no longer represents who you are today. You may have just grown tired of it or its location is not appropriate for the career path you’re presently on. Whatever the reason, you want it gone. Can it be removed?

!

before treatment

Dr. Fanny Louton of Blair Plastic Surgery’s Skin Care and Laser Center says “Yes.” Tattoos are pockets of ink located in the skin’s dermis or subdermal tissues that have been encapsulated as foreign bodies. In their stable state, they are too big to be removed by macrophages, the skin’s natural scavenger cells, and so remain as colored artificial lesions. Q-switch lasers are the most common tools for tattoo removal.

after two treatments

Dr. Fanny Louton has 15 years of experience with cosmetic lasers and chose the Spectra Q-Switch tattoo removal laser for her practice and patients. “The Spectra is the most effective and safest tool for tattoo removal. It has the ability to target not only black and reds but also greens and blues found in today’s colorful tattoos.”

Actual patient of Dr. Fanny Louton response to the laser light will vary according to color, age and the kind of tattoo ink that was used.”

The Q-switch laser explodes the ink particles into microscopic pieces so that the macrophages can gradually remove the fragmented ink particles. Although the results are not immediate and repeated treatments are necessary, the process is safe and permanent and usually yields dramatic results. Return appointments are a minimum of 4 to 6 weeks apart. After the treatment you must keep the surface clean and out of the sun until completely healed. Total number of treatments will range from as few as 3- 4, to as many as 10 or more.

Sessions and cost depends on tattoo size. The time required to remove the tattoo ranges from seconds to minutes. “Using the Spectra, I can treat a 4” by 4” tattoo in less than 3 minutes,” states Dr. Louton. “We use a cold air blower during the removal process to keep you comfortable and we will also numb the area with a topical anesthetic prior to treatment if you desire. Most individual find that it’s such a fast procedure that it’s not worth waiting an extra 30 minutes to allow the numbing medicine to work.”

For questions regarding tattoo removal, cost range, or to schedule a consultation, call Blair Plastic Surgery at 814-234-1420 or 949-7280.

V

acations are a nice get-away for fun and relaxation. The preparation, however, can be hectic and time consuming. For many women, the makeup bag can be one of the most challenging. Of course, we can’t forget our essentials but sometimes we think we need to bring everything but the kitchen sink. This year, why not keep it simple and join the many others who have reduced the size of their makeup bag. No matter how long or short your vacation, permanent makeup will lessen the hassle and allow more time for what’s intended, Fun and Relaxation!

Keep-it-Simple Beauty Tips While Traveling:

• Skip the foundation and mix your daily moisturizer with a tiny dollop of facial self-tanner for a healthy natural glow. Begin a week early to get a head start.

• Leave your full size bottles at home. Towelettes travel nicely and come in several forms; facial cleanser, deodorant, perfume, and insect repellent are just a few. • Crushed ice in a washcloth can be applied under the eyes to reduce puffiness for an immediate fresher appearance.

“Permanent makeup takes no additional room in the suitcase, it’s convenient, gives confidence all day and everyday, and it will leave you more time for what really matters on vacation. Plan ahead and call today to schedule an appointment or free consultation with me!”

• Avoid touching your face, however if you must, take a second to apply hand sanitizer to your hands which will help prevent breakouts.

• Drink plenty of water to keep your body hydrated and your skin moisturized.

To Keep-it Real-Simple...Those who already have permanent eyeliner, eyebrows, and full lip color, a quick “freshen-up” is as simple as a swipe across your face with a cleansing towelette, a dab of tinted moisturizer, a little lip gloss and a coat of mascara will give a rejuvenated and finished look in a minute or two. This is a beauty secret worth sharing.

Jezebel's Offers Free Professional Bra Fitting Summer is Here! We Have Bathing Suits That Come in Cup Sizes! The statistics are out! Approximately 85% of women are wearing the wrong size bra! That's a lot of women who are uncomfortable, who are getting no support whatsoever from their bra and who are denying themselves the opportunity to look truly fantastic in their outerwear. A bra is not 'just a bra'. A bra should support, lift and shape your body. It should help elongate your torso and should give you the appearance of looking trimmer. It should also be the foundation for your fashion. As well as controlling your body’s 'vertical movement', there are many other reasons you must be regularly fitted for this very important piece of clothing.

fitting bra right from the start. Good habits should start young to avoid a lifetime of uncomfortable bras and potential breast tissue damage. 10. Do it for yourself. Women are busy creatures and often put themselves last. As the natural nurturer of the household we usually make sure everyone else is taken care of before we worry about ourselves. Many of our customers have told us that their only regret is that they waited so long to come in and see us!

Here are 10 reasons why you need to stop by Jezebel’s for a free professional Bra Fitting:

1. Support. You need to be in the right size bra so that you are getting proper support. Having the right support is especially important, it shouldn't ride up, you should not have to continuously pull it down and the straps should stay comfortably in place. 2. Stop breast tissue damage. There are many reasons that breast tissue damage occurs. Being in the wrong size bra is one of them. We need to care for our breasts by doing regular breast checks, but also it is important to wear a well fitting bra. 3. Foundation for your fashion. When you are wearing a properly fitted bra you create a fantastic foundation for your fashion, meaning your clothes hang properly and you look great. By wearing the right size bra you will help elongate the appearance of your torso, which as well as giving you a trimmer look, will make your outerwear look that much better. 4. Two instead of four. This goes without saying. You should have two well defined breasts. All your breast tissue should be within the cup, with none of it spilling out the sides or over the top to give the illusion of quad boob! 5. The dreaded back fat. Depending on the bra, you can help flatten out the 'dreaded back fat' by wearing a bra with a wider band. 6. No more welts. If you get to the end of the day and end up with nasty red welts over your shoulders or around your middle then you need to be properly fitted for a new bra. Fact: You should be able to wear your bra all day without feeling pain or discomfort. 7. Your changing body. It is important to be fitted regularly, at least every 12 months or so, as everyone's body changes over time. You might lose a bit of weight or put some on. You might need a different bra for that time of the month if you notice a change in size. 8. Individual needs. You need to have more than one bra in your 'lingerie wardrobe'. Not only should you be washing your bras after about two days wear, you will also need different bras to accommodate your different needs. Don't limit yourself to just one bra! 9.The right size from the start. If you have a teenage daughter, niece, cousin, sister or friend it is really important that they are in the right I read it in the Women’s Journal!

A Change of Style

fit her face shape). It’s a really fun process, my client never has to put up with unruly hair as it is growing out, and the end point is determined when we get there. Where ever “there” might be! Going from long to short is a reverse process but quicker. Rather than just going from long to very short, I recommend doing this by degrees. From a length of mid back to “short” I can create 5 or 6 different styles by adjusting perimeter length, side angle, bang area, etc. Again, this can be a fun process and gets the most style mileage from long hair. Short to long, long to short – the change doesn’t have to be drastic. In fact, experiencing the change can be part of the fun.

Many clients express a desire to change their hair style but they’re not sure where they want to go with it. My first question at this point is, what specifically don’t you like about your present hair style? Then I get all sorts of complaints about what the client feels her hair won’t do or won’t stop doing. I also ask questions about what the client has done with her hair in the past and how long ago that was. The most common scenario is going from short to long. How do I grow it out? What will it look like while I’m growing it long? What will it look like when it’s long? What style should I grow it into? Etc. By this point the client is usually pretty agitated and unsettled about the whole thing. My response is that she is getting way ahead of herself. Hair grows approximately ¼ to ½ an inch a month. Growing hair out is a slow process that happens in degrees. My recommendation is to start by sculpting the present style to conform to the shape of the skull with a precision cut. Then we should see her back in 12 weeks to see where we are. At that point we can make some style decisions and bring her hair back into conformity with her skull shape. Then we will schedule another appointment in 12 weeks. The 12 week interval is to prevent problems with split ends and to retain conformity with her head shape (as long as her cut fits her skull shape it will

Is it OK to color my hair before I go to the beach?

Carol Burkardt -Johnstown, PA

Dropping big bucks at the beauty shop or spending valuable time at home touching up your color is a waste of your resources, as UV rays will likely change your color. The dryness caused by something like a fresh highlighting job may also be intensified by the harsh rays of the sun. Instead of color/hi-lites before a trip to the beach, get a deep conditioner and glaze to protect your hair from the harsh elements. So clip it up and just enjoy yourself -- the glow you'll have from relaxing on vacation is better anyway!

Humans have changed the landscape throughout what was once a vast, uninterrupted wilderness migration corridor and plentiful supply of native flowering plants. Hummingbirds were once hunted for their beautiful plumage, and though that threat is gone, widespread pesticide and herbicide use has poisoned the tiny birds that feed on insects and flowers sprayed with chemicals. Another threat is collision with windows, invisible from certain angles. Fortunately, Ruby-throated hummingbirds populations are abundant and they seem to have adapted well to human activity. We can hang out a welcome sign for these amazing birds, providing a back yard hummingbird buffet to attract them to our gardens. Once they visit, they may nest, be frequent visitors throughout the summer, and likely return spring after spring to locations that provide all of their needs. Fragrance attracts butterflies and other insect pollinators, but hummingbirds have no sense of smell and rely on color to find their food. Their favorite color? Red! Be sure to include lots of red flowers, as well as purple, pink, orange and other vibrant flowers with varying bloom times to bring them to your yard. They tend to prefer flowers that have a tubular shape, but a variety of flowering plants will bring them in for regular feedings, as well as attracting a bonus of butterflies! A variety of blooming plants will also attract more insects, which hummingbirds relish, plucked from spider webs, out of flowers or during mid flight. If you don’t have much garden space, you can provide hanging baskets or pots of Fuchsias and other favorite annuals and still enjoy the show.

Woody plants such as lilacs attract insects and provide both nectar and nesting sites at just the right time of year for the birds to build their tiny nests. Once hummingbirds have chosen a nesting area for the season, they tend to establish a regular feeding route, called ‘traplining’, but their curiosity will lead them to investigate new sources of food. They also appreciate fresh water in the form of a mister or sprinkler rather than birdbath. Provide places to perch, supplemental energy with hummingbird feeders, and you’ve created a hummingbird paradise!

Hummingbird feeders attract hummers to your yard, and are a good sucrose supplement, especially when little is blooming. The types with insect guards are the best. Hang them in the shade in a location safe from cats. An inexpensive and simple recipe is to dissolve 1 cup white granulated sugar in 4 cups boiling water and cool before pouring into feeder, but do not add red dye. Store extra solution in the refrigerator to keep it fresh. Replace solution in feeders every three days to prevent mold, yeast and bacterial growth. Clean feeder thoroughly with hot soapy water and bottle brush, rinse thoroughly, and use a boiling water rinse at least once a week (or more frequently during hot weather). CAUTION! DO NOT USE raw, turbinado or brown sugar which contain iron, deadly to hummingbirds. Powdered sugar rapidly ferments due to cornstarch content. Diluted honey grows microorganisms, spoils rapidly and can give hummingbirds mouth sores and make them sick.

Ruby-throated hummingbirds (Archilochus colubris) are the picture of resilience. At only 3 ½ inches long they weigh less than a nickel, yet every spring they fly over a thousand miles from winter habitat as far away as Panama, travel across the Gulf of Mexico, and arrive in their breeding area in North America. They are the only hummingbird variety to nest east of the Mississippi, and have coevolved with many of the native flowering plants in this region that bloom just in time for the Ruby-throated hummingbirds’ arrival in April and May. The birds depend on the flowers, and the flowers on the pollination the long beak of the hummingbird provides.

Hearing

Link Between Untreated Hearing Loss and Dementia Two-thirds of older Americans suffer from hearing loss, but many don't take it seriously and many don't use hearing aids. It can be a part of aging, but hearing loss could lead to more than just lost words. If you're hard of hearing, listen up! A recent study published by researchers at Johns Hopkins in Baltimore, Maryland gives even more evidence for the need to identify and address hearing difficulties at their earliest stage. The researchers reported that individuals with untreated hearing loss had higher risk for dementia and that, not surprisingly, the risk increased as their hearing loss increased. For every 10dB of hearing loss, the individual risk of developing dementia increased by 20%. The link was so strong that the researchers further commented that 1/3 of dementia risk can be explained by hearing loss even though the connection is rarely considered.

Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A is an ASHA certified PA state licensed audiologist with over 19 years of experience. Education: B.S. Marywood College, 1989, M.S. Vanderbilt University,1991, Au.D. Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 2007

Why would hearing loss be linked to dementia? Well, hearing loss has already been shown to contribute to social and physical isolation and to cognitive decline. The authors feel that the brain has to devote more resources to handle the poor quality information coming from the ears, which reduces its ability to function well. Doctors believe the strain of decoding sounds over many years may overwhelm the brain, leaving people with hearing loss more vulnerable to dementia.

Williamsport Hearing Services

So what can be done?

The Hearing Experts

First, have your hearing checked by a certified Audiologist. It’s painless, it takes little time to complete, and will be a permanent starting point against which to measure any future changes in your hearing. Second, if you do have a hearing loss, consider hearing instruments to improve the quality of what you’re hearing and to allow you to stay active and alert. Third, if you already have hearing aids, have them checked regularly to ensure they’re in good working order and that they’re programmed appropriately for your hearing loss, which will change over time. These easy steps will keep you independent and enjoying life. For more information, http:// www.hopkinsmedicine.org/otolaryngology/ May / June 2012

Considering Divorce? Three Point Checklist to Get Your Finances in Order Not only is a divorce an emotional split with a person you once loved, it is also a financial split. Keep these three financial things in mind as you are heading for a divorce. Good planning will help you maintain control of your financial situation and can minimize the financial impact of a divorce. First, What is your debt? Did your spouse accumulate debt in your name that you do not know about? To that end, the first thing I tell my clients is to check your credit report. This will alert you to any outstanding credit, liabilities or other debts that may be in your name -- but that you may not have been aware of. You want to verify the accuracy of all accounts and determine if any lines of credit have been opened in your name without your approval. Your spouse may have created debts that you are legally liable for, even though you weren't responsible for paying those debts during the marriage. Checking your credit report before the divorce will also let you know if your spouse has affected your personal credit profile. Joint accounts may show up on your credit report and may damage your credit. Responsibility for joint accounts must be established and resolved as part of the divorce settlement. You may need to maintain joint accounts for some time after the divorce, because one spouse may be unable to maintain credit cards or bank accounts alone and to eliminate them would cause an unacceptable hardship -- especially if minor children are involved. However, if you do maintain a joint account, reduce the credit limit to small, manageable amounts to avoid a situation where one spouse decides to go on a ‘shopping spree.’ I also recommend establishing at least one personal credit card -- and if you know a divorce is possible (or imminent), establish an account as soon as possible. Second, what are your assets? After listing your assets, have those assets appraised. Not only do homes need to be valued, but also, motor vehicles, furs, furniture, jewelry, paintings, memorabilia. The husband’s baseball card collection, may not be as valuable in today’s market as the wife would like those cards to be, but gold jewelry may be much more valuable than when originally purchased. You want to know what these things are worth, because you want to know if they are worth fighting for. Pensions, 401K plans, and retirement savings accounts also need to be valued. For example, many people going through a divorce do not realize the risks involved in accepting money in retirement accounts. Money accepted in this manner is subject to taxation when you withdraw it, so it's actually worth less than its face value at the time you receive it. This becomes an extremely important consideration if one needs to use the money immediately -- early withdrawal penalties can reduce the settlement's value even more. Make sure that you do not I read it in the Women’s Journal!

take all of the assets where you must pay the burden of taxation while the other party is getting assets that are regular cash. Third, project what your expenses will be after a divorce. The budget you had before the divorce will definitely change afterward. You may find yourself in a position where you may have kept the house, but the expenses of that home are too difficult financially to maintain. Living in the marital home with only one paycheck, will result in proportionally higher property taxes, higher energy bills and higher maintenance costs. Also, whether it's paying for babysitters, day care or expenses for child visits, you're likely to face new costs that you've never had to budget for before. Arranging for help to care for small children in the home is a sizable expense that you don't want to leave out of settlement negotiations. It may also be necessary, as your children get older, to add to your financial outlay during the negotiations the cost of additional food, clothing and transportation needed to raise a child properly. Being the custodial parent for a child can also have an indirect effect on salary increases and career advancement. Working late frequently or constant traveling for the job to earn a promotion may not be possible if you have to take care of a small child at home. Determining how you'll deal with those situations and the cost for appropriate help to care for your child will also need to be factored into your overall expenses. We are committed to the thorough understanding of your legal goals. With this understanding, we can develop a practical strategy and provide sound advice so that the impact of these events will be minimized and you can go on with your life with the least amount of obstacles blocking your new path.

Can You Keep Your Kids Out Of Debt? By Judy L. Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm celebrating their 75th year and located in Centre County

beneficiary minor reaches the age of majority (21 in Pennsylvania), the beneficiary may assume control. This means the money placed in the account may be used at their discretion. The most popular vehicle at present for saving specifically for college is a 529 Plan, named for its source, Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code . Money from the plan can be used for tuition, supplies, fees, books and equipment (ex. computer) that a higher education school requires. The 529 has many tax advantages. In Pennsylvania, the contribution to a plan is taxdeductible for Pennsylvania income tax. Earnings grow tax-free federally and qualified distributions for higher education expenses are tax-free. The account has an owner(usually the person funding the account) and a beneficiary, the person expected to use the money from the plan for higher education. The owner maintains control of the assets and can change the beneficiary (unlike the UGMA where the beneficiary has received an irrevocable gift). The benefits of the 529 are many, given the tax advantages and the ability for the owner to maintain control of the account. The downside is that the money must be used for higher education expenses or else the money withdrawn is not only taxed but carries a 10% penalty, similar to an early withdrawal from a retirement account. To avoid this, if one child is not going to college and has a sibling, the owner can change the beneficiary to the child that will attend a university. The benefits and disadvantages to each type of account are many and I could not go into the full detail of each in a short article. For further information, speak to a financial advisor who can help find the right fit for your family.

There was an interesting article in the May 2012 edition of Consumer Reports, titled “Student Debt: Your Threat.” Here is a summary of the data. It’s estimated that Americans owe more than $900 billion in federal and private loans and the student debt owed exceeded creditcard debt for the first time in 2010. The information in the article left me considering how students can avoid the burden of high student loan debt. It’s difficult because tuition increases have outpaced inflation by a wide margin. The burden to prepare their children falls to their guardians. To avoid debt, a parent can hope that Junior learns to play golf like Tiger Woods, play hockey like Sidney Crosby or simply hit a racket like Serena Williams. Let’s face it: athletic scholarships just like any other scholarship are hard to come by. Higher education, like any other financial goal, needs to be planned out and decisions made earlier rather than later. Preparing early for any financial objective is important. Therefore, starting as soon as the baby is born is vital. Socking money away into a mutual fund can be done with merely $50/quarter. That’s less than 56 cents a day. The hard part is just starting it. We all find excuses for not doing the things that are good for us, whether it’s exercising and eating right, or saving and investing. Once you decide to start investing for your child’s future, what are the best avenues and options? The Uniform Gift to Minors Act (UGMA) or Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) accounts (I will use UGMA to mean both in this explanation) are created to gift money to a minor. The accounts have a custodian (an adult, typically a parent) that directs the investments and any distributions before the age of majority. There are no income limits to opening an UGMA and $13,000 (the current gifting limit) is the most that can be gifted into the account per donor in one year. Therefore, a husband and wife could invest a combined $26,000 into the UGMA account for their daughter in 2012. The money in a UGMA account is under the minor’s social security number and there are no tax deductions or deferral advantages to the plan. (For further detail on how the accounts are taxed, speak to an accountant or advisor.) These accounts can be used for anything that benefits the child and is not limited to education. The downside? When the I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Dentistry

"The Face Frames the Smile" It can be disheartening when you just finish a beautiful restoration on someone's mouth, when you just give him or her the smile they always wanted, when you just make that dark grey tooth white again, when you are waiting for tears of joy to flow, and tears do flow, but not because they are happy. The expected response of "Wow I absolutely love my teeth," instead becomes, “But look at my thin ugly lips," or "Do you see those wrinkles around my mouth," or "I hate my mustache" (from a woman.) Especially women, we can't be happy even for a second. We are always looking for the next thing that is wrong with us, the next thing we can fix. These responses would make what I felt was a very successful restoration of someone's mouth, a very unsatisfying experience for the patient.

course, surgeons are highly trained, however, as a dentist we have an eye unlike any other for how not only how the teeth fit in the face, but how the lips and the mouth do as well. So many women who have had work done on their lips end up looking like a duck, because whoever did their treatment did not follow the laws of golden proportion. Golden proportion is a concept that is hammered home repeatedly throughout my extensive continuing education classes. However, we not only have an eye for esthetics and proportion, we can also get patients numb so they do not feel what can sometimes be slightly uncomfortable injections. The Spa then took off from there. Our team again decided that other treatments would be beneficial for our dental patients. A TMJ massages, hypnosis, facials, etc. Eleanor Roosevelt said, "It doesn't matter what you said, or how you said it, what matters is how you made them feel." This is how the Spa at Kenlee has evolved, from an adjunct to the dental office to an entity all of its own. It began as a place where we could enhance someone's smile, to a way for the dental team to provide patients with a relaxing change in environment after a long stressful dental procedure (not that dental visits ever are stressful), to a place completely unrelated to dentistry where friends of all ages can enjoy a fabulous day of pampering!

Lashelle, our team's dental assistant/esthetician suggested that because of her dual degree we could purchase equipment so she could remove that unwanted hair or unsightly sunspots. She suggested I complete the rigorous CE training and become certified in facial esthetics to be able to provide patients with Botox and Juvederm. Our team agreed that it was very important to be able to provide patients the treatments they needed so that they were happy with the complete picture. Many patients have asked, why would I go to a dentist for the treatments, aren't plastic surgeons more qualified? Of

Custom Closets

Accessories That Help You Get Organized

Jeff Ulmer, Owner

It's no secret that our environments profoundly influence how we feel and act. A properly organized closet stocked with appropriate, flattering clothing makes dressing a pleasure. Knowing that everything in your personally designed closet fits and has a purpose guarantees that you will always look and feel your best, whether you're dressing for a cocktail party or an afternoon baseball game.

Closets Plus will maximize every inch of space in your closet with the use of strategically placed elements. With a place for everything and everything in its place, your style will come together with ease.

Built In Closets Walk In Closets Closet Accesories Reach In Closets Pantry Spaces Difficult Spaces Garage Organizers

• Sweaters folded on shelves to eliminate wrinkling • Socks and undergarments organized in drawers and out of sight • Velvet-lined jewelry drawer inserts with compartments for all types of jewelry • Adjustable shoe shelves to maximize the space whether you keep your shoes in boxes or put them on display • Pullout belt, tie and scarf racks with hooks for easy access with minimal use of space • Drawer dividers to maximize the space in each drawer • Wire baskets are great for children's closets to store toys, stuffed animals, etc. • Corner shelves to take advantage of every bit of space. For many, the most useful tool in an organized closet is the valet rod, which you can "dress" and quickly mix-and-match outfits and accessories, step back and evaluate the total look prior to donning it-even the night before, making for stress-free dressing in the morning! That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?

EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos. 1. Permanent makeup Corrections. 2. Unwanted Name. 3. Gang Related tattoos. 4. Tattoo markings for radiation. 5. Tattoo redsign. 6. Impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? Through a specially formulated process, Eliminink "bonds" with all permanent makeup pigments and tattoo ink, thereby resulting in a tattoo removal procedure that is noncolor dependent, unlike that of a laser, which is color dependent. This, in turn, greatly increases the potential for successful tattoo removal and decreases the overall number of treatment sessions required (as compared to what is frequently required when using the laser technique). The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

Want to Make a Difference?

Talk to a woman or better yet, talk to 100 of them and make it happen in less than an hour! ganizations will be considered as the purpose is for the contributions to stay 100% in the community. How is the organization that receives the donation chosen? A member who has filled out a Charitable Organization Fact Sheet can put the name of a local organization into the hat for a random drawing at the meeting. The organizers of the meeting will collect the names and at random, three organizations will be selected from the hat. The members who wrote down the chosen names will be asked to come up and give a short five minute presentation as to why their chosen organization should receive the donation. Immediately following, each Member will vote by ballot. Majority rules. Even if your choice does not win, all Members are responsible for writing a check to the winning organization. How long do the meetings last? Meetings are intended to be very short, generally lasting approximately 45 minutes but no longer than 60 minutes. However, you may come to a meeting early or stay after in order to spend time socializing and getting to know other members.

YOU can make a difference! The SUN (Snyder, Union & Northumberland) Chapter had their first voting meeting. It was exciting because a small group of women made a big difference in their community. The meeting was informative as two members talked briefly about a passion they hold. The members then voted on which non-profit to endorce their checks. The vote enabled 9 kids to attend a diabetes conference. At the conference the families learn different ways to handle life choices because managing diabetes often requires a change in lifestyle. This conference will assit the family in coping with the daiy struggles. 100(+) Women Who Care are groups of women interested in supporting their communities. They come from all walks of life with varying financial backgrounds. As individuals they feel the pressure and challenge of having a meaningful impact, but as a group they know they have the ability to contribute to the growth of their communities in ways never thought possible! The mission is to reach out and help communities by finding at least 100 or more women to contribute $100 four times a year, ($40,000+ annually) either as individuals or teams, to local charitable organizations. The goal is to keep the focus local and have an impact that can be seen. THIS GROUP IS PERFECT FOR YOU IF: • You want 100% of your donations to go directly to a local charitable organization. We help and support any ladies in Bedford, Blair, Cambria, Centre, Clearfield, Clinton, Columbia, Huntingdon, Lycoming, Mifflin, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder and Union counties who want to offer this to their communities. • You want to learn about or let other women know about the amazing work many of our local non-profits are currently doing. • You want to become part of or create a powerful group of women that will make an immediate, direct and positive impact in your community.

YOU CAN HELP!

Which organizations are allowed to be sponsored? In order to be considered at a meeting, the organization must be based in that chapter’s community.
