Rehabilitation Helps a Stroke Patient Return Home Lee Glass, of McAlisterville, likes to be busy. At 77, he builds crafts, enjoys yard work and gardening, and takes care of a few chickens (13,000 to be exact) on the family farm. After a recent stroke, and a stay at Geisinger Medical Center, Lee chose rehabilitation at HealthSouth Nittany Valley Rehabilitation Hospital.

For more information about HealthSouth inpatient or outpatient stroke rehabilitation, or a tour, call (814) 359-3421 or visit www.nittanyvalleyrehab.com.
Like Lee, most people have to make a choice about stroke rehabilitation from a hospital bed. Knowing where you would go ahead of time, and what level of rehabilitation you want, can make all the difference in how you recover.
HealthSouth Speech-language Pathologist Maria Dombrowski observes the cognitive and memory functions of stroke rehabilitation patient Lee Glass as he reads. After just two weeks of physical, occupational, and speech therapy at HealthSouth in Pleasant Gap, Lee is able to return home to his family in McAlisterville. He’ll transition to outpatient therapy at HealthSouth’s Lewistown Outpatient Clinic.
When Lee started inpatient stroke rehabilitation, he had limited use of his right side, including his right arm. Lee received three hours of therapy a day, including physical, occupational, and speech therapy. A retired builder (Lee and his brother owned Glass Brothers Construction in Freeburg), Lee was focused on improving the function and strength of his right side. “I’ve been building things my whole life,” says Lee. “I built our home, and everything from to cradles to toy boxes. I owe my great-granddaughter a jewelry box; that’s next!”

What to Look For When Choosing a Vein Center Where can you find an IAC accredited vein center?
Not all vein centers are created equal. It is important to do a little research before treating your varicose veins. To receive the highest standards in patient care, look for the Intersocietal Accreditation Commission (IAC) “seal of approval” when choosing a vein center.
Advanced Vein & Laser Center in Duncansville, Pennsylvania has been granted accreditation in Superficial Venous Treatment and Management by the IAC. One of the first five in the nation to be granted IAC accreditation in varicose vein treatment, AVLC has proven they are a leader in the vein industry.
What is IAC accreditation?
“We are honored to be one of the select few to be meeting the IAC’s standards in venous care,” says Dr. David Faber, vein specialist. “We appreciate being recognized for our long-term commitment to total vein care.”
IAC accreditation demonstrates a commitment to quality care. The purpose of IAC accreditation is to ensure high quality patient care and promote long-term health care. Accreditation by the IAC means a vein center has undergone a thorough review of its operational and technical components by a panel of experts. The IAC grants accreditation only to those facilities that are found to be providing quality patient care, in compliance with national standards through a comprehensive application process including a detailed review of selected patient procedures.
When should you see a vein specialist? If you are experiencing tired, achy painful legs, you may be suffering from vein insufficiency. Varicose veins do not always cause pain, and therefore, can go unnoticed. An ultrasound screening for varicose veins is recommended if you are experiencing any of these signs and symptoms:
IAC accreditation is widely respected within the medical community, as illustrated by the support of the national and medical societies related to superficial venous disorders, which include physicians, physician extenders, nurses and ultrasound technologists.
• Tired, achy, painful legs
What does it mean to you?
• Tenderness around the varicose vein • Numbness, swelling, burning, or heaviness in the legs
IAC accreditation ensures accountability. If a vein center has obtained IAC accreditation, you can be certain their processes and procedures have been carefully evaluated by medical experts in the field of treatment and management of superficial venous disorders.
• Itching or irritated rash on the legs or near the ankles • Veins that are dark purple or blue in color and appear twisted and bulging.
• • • • •
Trust your legs to a leader in the vein industry. Look for the IAC accreditation “seal of approval”!
For more information, please call Advanced Vein & Laser Center at 814.515.9919. AVLC provides the best health care using the latest technological advancements in vein care. Their expertly-trained and caring team of health professionals understands your condition, concerns and hopes for restored health and wellness.

than inflation. Her colleagues describe her as a ‘listener and questioner,’ who has the skill set of a CEO, and ‘who knows how to build consensus.’
On February 1, 2014, a new Chairman was named to the Federal Reserve Board. This change proved to be historic, as it made Janet Yellen the first woman Fed Chairman since the Federal Reserve was established in 1913. Yellen succeeded Ben Bernanke as Fed Chair after four years serving as Vice Chair. The Chairman is nominated to a four-year term but can stay as long as 14 years and many last more than one term. Yellen is only the 15th Federal Reserve Chair.
In her first Fed Open Market Committee (FOMC) press conference, Janet Yellen continued the practice of transparency in Fed decisions and plans. The Federal Reserve lowered their bond buying by $10 Billion a month and spooked the markets with an off-hand remark that referenced setting a six month time frame after QE ended to begin raising interest rates. The stock markets took a hit on the news but the dollar strengthened. Yellen needs to balance unemployment along with the threat of inflation from continued easing. Not to mention, there is concern that the Fed’s loose monetary policy could be creating other bubbles. Keeping rates artificially low can lead to unintended consequences in addition to helping boost the U.S. economy.
The Federal Reserve members are nominated by the President and confirmed by the senate. Once appointed, the Federal Reserve and its chairman are independent and do not need approval for their decisions. The Fed is the central bank of the United States and sets monetary policy for the nation, which is a huge undertaking that calls for a delicate balance. Currently, the Fed is keeping rates artificially low by buying bonds (Quantitative Easing, or QE) and setting the Fed Funds Rate (the interest rate at which banks loan to each other overnight) at 0.0 - 0.25%. This is the reason that mortgage rates are around 4.32% and savings rates are at .5% (and that’s generous). Rates were cut drastically and measures were taken to prop the economy after the 2008 real estate bubble burst. As Vice Chair, Janet Yellen helped guide the path to effectively deal with the Great Recession. Now, she leads the Fed in unwinding bond purchases and normalizing interest rates without damaging the recovering global economy.
Janet Yellen and our Federal Reserve have a rough job ahead. With her experience and openness to all data and opinions, Yellen looks ready to move us forward in uncharted waters. Yellen is a 36 year Fed veteran, who headed the San Francisco Federal Reserve. She grew up in Brooklyn and graduated from Brown University with a degree in Economics. She received her PhD in Economics from Yale University in 1971. There, she was supervised by Paul Tobin for her doctorate and he helped shape her philosophies. She is considered a ‘dove,’ which is slang for an economist that is more concerned with unemployment May / June 2014

Empowering Women with Exceptional Attention: How the Breast Cancer and Women’s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania is using the newest technology and the best clinicians to serve YOU By Alex Brennsteiner
In July 2011, the Breast Cancer and Women’s Health Institute of Central Pennsylvania (BCWHI) opened on the campus of Tyrone Hospital to meet a growing need in the Central Pennsylvania region for high quality breast cancer and women’s health services. Since it’s opening, BCWHI’s mission has not only been to provide high quality healthcare, but also to provide women with education and “guidance to help EMPOWER women to obtain their optimal state of health,” especially by ensuring that the patient is at the center of her care team. BCWHI operates under the philosophy that each patient is unique and deserving of highquality, personalized care, education and support to navigate her diagnosis and to make the right care decisions. Since opening, BCWHI has been under the leadership of Dr. David Arbutina, M.D., FACS, BCWHI Medical Director and board certified general surgeon with focused expertise in breast cancer surgery, who has over 25 years of experience diagnosing and treating breast cancer and benign breast conditions. Dr. Arbutina, who is also a former Colonel and surgeon in the U.S. Air Force, has garnered a far-reaching regional reputation for excellence in breast cancer treatment, and under his leadership, the institute has seen an increase in patient census, both from the Central Pennsylvania region and even from across state lines. In 2013, BCWHI was pleased to welcome Dr. Kelly Biggs, M.D., board certified diagnostic radiologist, to the BCWHI team in his capacity as Medical Director of Tyrone Hospital’s Radiology Department. Dr. Biggs is distinguished by his expertise in radiology as well as his service as a pilot and Commander in the U.S. Navy. BCWHI also provides patients with the services of Lannette Johnston, M.S., BSN, RN, CHC, Registered Nurse Health Coach and Director of Outreach Programs, Tyrone Hospital. Ms. Johnston empowers patients through education and coaching in order to help each patient achieve her optimal state of health and also provides educational presentations to community organizations on issues related to breast health. BCWHI Nurse Navigator Joyce Arbutina helps patients to navigate their treatment plan and serves as a patient advocate through every step of the care process. BCWHI is also proud to be able to provide patients with local access to the best diagnostic technology. BCWHI recently added a new ultrasound machine designated specifically for breast care patients and welcomed the long-awaited addition of state-of-the-art digital mammography to the Tyrone Hospital campus last fall, which is able to capture much more detailed and accurate breast images compared with traditional film mammography, with the hopes of earlier diagnosis and treatment. Since digital mammography has arrived on campus, BCWHI has seen a significant increase in the number of mammograms being provided at Tyrone Hospital, and we are edified knowing that we are able to provide this highquality, potentially life-saving service right here in our community. To learn more about how BCWHI can provide you with high quality treatment and help you achieve optimal health, please visit our website http://www.thebreastcancerinstitute. org/index.php or call us at 814.470.7732.

Loose Weight and Save Your Teeth?
Yes they are Related....and Yes, We Can Help You With Both!!! be able to help them in anyway we could, which is how the spa nicely compliments our dental practice. Both businesses deal with the detrimental effects of sugars and chemical in our diets. Not only teeth, but your skin, acne breakouts, and even eczema can result from a poor diet. So we wanted to help all of these issues also. As stated earlier, with 75% of Americans overweight, a chief complaint of most is obesity. I-lipo, our laser liposuction procedure, is a sure way to emilinate those stubborn areas of unwanted fat. It is not a fix for an obese person who hasn't made a lifestyle change yet with better nutritional habits and exercise. However, it is an invaluable tool for those people who have made the committment to a healthier lifestyle, and just want to get back into that pair of jeans or look better in a bathing suit! I-lipo results in a long term permanent weight loss reduction as long as your new nutritional habits are maintained. It is painless, and just like with our dental work, it is very affordable with no interest low monthly payments.
Sugar. Sugar causes weight gain. Sugar causes tooth decay. Sugar is almost impossible to cut out of our diets. Some try, they call it the caveman diet, vegetables and meat.... No Sugar. With this nutritional change, you would loose weight AND you would not even need a Nicole toothbrush, floss, or listerine. If Carnicella the bacteria present in our mouths DMD, MAGD do not have carbohydrates as a food source, they cannot produce the acidic by-products that destroy our teeth. Although the value of eliminating sugar for oral health is valid, what is more important for the general public, for the 75% of Americans who are overweight, is the value of eliminating sugar for their waist band. How likely is a complete elimination of sugar though? Even though sugar feeds cancer cells, and the elimination of it will cause cancer cells to die, those battling cancer still can't cut it our of their diet; even if it is a do or die situation. Sugar is like a drug, we need it, we crave it, and when it is mixed with chemicals in sodas and processed foods we actually become addicted to it. So how do we protect our teeth and loose weight! We need some help, help both of our offices can provide.
One building, 2 amazing opportunites to start achieving a healthier lifestyle. This healthy new you will be reflected in your new, beautiful, smile and in your new, fit, healthy body. Are Headaches Bringing You Down? 4. Sinus Headaches are described as dull constant pain or pressure into the cheekbones, bridge of nose, and forehead. This headache usually accompanies other symptoms such as nasal discharge, fever, and ear soreness. In our office, doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy can help treat all headache types of pain. They strive to find the root cause of the symptoms so headache pain can be relieved long term. This is often done through spinal manipulation, balancing neck muscles with applied kinesiology, and fixing digestive concerns. If you have questions or would like an appointment, please call our office at (814) 954-7774 or (570) 567-7765. We are looking forward to helping you feel your best. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health!
By Doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy at Hands in Health Did you know that headaches affect 9 out of 10 Americans? Headaches can fall into several categories and are listed below. 1. Tension Headaches are the most common type of headache experienced. They can cause achy, dull pressure around the forehead, temples, and back of the neck. Often times they are caused by muscle imbalances due to over contraction in the scalp and neck areas or increased stress. They do not usually cause nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches can occur in children and adults. 2. Migraines are associated with moderate to severe pain and are often described as pounding or throbbing pain. They can cause symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, blurry vision, and light, sound, or odor sensitivity. Migraines are believed to be due to changes in the blood vessels in the head, genetics, or food sensitivities. 3. Cluster Headaches are the least common. However, they are the most severe. This type of headache is defined as constant stabbing, burning, or throbbing pain, which is often located behind one eye. They occur one to three times a day and then disappear for weeks or years.

Central PA Hometowns: Where Our Hearts Are
Mifflinburg By Sandie Biddle
Mifflinburg began as adjacent villages with three other names, Youngmanstown and Greenville/Rotestown. Fifty years later, the settlements had expanded and merged at Third Street. The new town was incorporated in 1827 as Mifflinburg in honor of Thomas Mifflin, the first governor of PA after the United States of America was formed. In 1845, George Swentzel set up Mifflinburg's first buggy business. Soon other buggy manufacturers set up shops in Mifflinburg, and by 1855, with a population of 800, Mifflinburg hosted 13 coachmakers. By the 1880s, with more than 50 buggy and sleigh factories, Mifflinburg became known as “Buggy Town” because its buggy makers produced more horse-drawn vehicles per capita than any other town in the state.

Mifflinburg, PA 17844 William A. Heiss operated a successful buggy making business from 1883 to 1920. When he died in 1931, the factory was 570-966-3822 closed and forgotten. Almost 50 years later, the doors were opened to reveal an original shop with belting and pulleys, tools, machinery and forges. The Elias Church, built in 1896 is reputed to be the oldest wood-frame church in the state. In addition to a church, it’s been a high-school, barn, storage area, and residence. It was restored to its original church design and is now the Elias Center for Performing Arts and is available for tours by reservation Tuesday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Performances are scheduled for April through December. Blueberries & Bluegrass is Friday, July 14 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Mifflinburg Community Park. Bring a lawn chair for the concert by West End Bluegrass Band and an appetite for everything blueberry – plus sandwiches and other homemade goodies which you may purchase and sample during while the boys are pickin’ and grinnin’. The Little Log House on Market Street was built in the early 1800s. Why isn’t it called the Little Log Cabin? Log cabins were single-story, often one-room structures, mostly considered temporary housing. Log houses were more permanent with a foundation, hewn logs, corner joiners, windows and interior partitions. This one is “continental/central chimney” style, with the fireplace placed toward the center of the house for whole-house heating.

Spring Cleaning — Tips On Getting Started By Lois Grose, President and Owner, Molly Maid of Centre, Mifflin and Juniata Counties Spring, I bet you thought it would never get here. I felt the same. Snow, ice, bitter cold temperatures are now a fleeting memory. Now is the time we start thinking about tackling all those Spring cleaning projects. Historically, spring cleaning was a whole lot different than it is today. The days of completely tearing your house apart are a thing of the past. A more modern approach to “Spring” cleaning can be a little easier and less back breaking by calling Molly Maid to schedule your free consultation. Meet with us to match our services with your cleaning needs. Your team of “Mollies” arrive ready to work and to get the job done. Our teams are all insured and bonded. We bring all supplies and equipment and use environmentally friendly products. Another way is to do the cleaning yourself. So to get you started, here are a few basic tips that will make the cleaning a little simpler and faster. I know you feel like I do, I would rather be in the garden or anywhere else outside than spending all my free time cleaning. LET’S GET STARTED: Just like making a New Year’s Resolution, make a Spring cleaning resolution by checking all your supplies. Making sure you have what you need to get the job done. Evaluate your cleaning supplies--properly disposing of old, abrasive or caustic products. You really don’t need all those products you store under your sink. I saw them, I know they are there. Remember less is more. All you really need is window/glass cleaner, a multipurpose cleaner, toilet bowl cleaner and a degreaser dish washing detergent. Works well on quartz, granite or any other greasy surface and you don’t need a lot of it to do the job. Make sure to have clean cloths, new sponges and of course your gloves.
Never clean without gloves so your nails and hands are protected. NEXT: Decide where you want to start. Don’t look at the whole task or you may never get started. I suggest starting in the kitchen. High dust for cob webs, then put hot water and some degreasing dish soap in your sink. Don’t fill the sink because you will need to change the water frequently. Start to the right of the stove; use your step stool to start cleaning the upper cabinets and move around the room until all surfaces have been cleaned. Top to bottom—left to right—section by section. Clean the outside of the appliances (leave the insides for another day). MOVING ON: To the bathrooms begin as you did in the kitchen (cob webs, top to bottom—left to right—section by section) then start the dry areas (living rooms, great rooms, dining rooms, bedrooms) Follow the same as kitchens and bathrooms. This way you won’t miss anything. TIP: Do not use waxes if you don’t need to, if you do, spray your microfiber cloth NOT directly onto the furniture. Same way with mirrors or glass on photographs/artwork, spray your cloth. LASTLY: Don’t try to clean the whole house in one weekend unless you have adequate time and energy. You can also enlist your family to help. Let them choose an area to concentrate on, finish it, and move onto the next. Next issue find move in and move out cleaning tips.

BREAST IMPLANTS 101: Saline or Silicone? In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon like Dr. Louton, both saline and silicone implants will give you a beautiful, natural result. Silicone implants feel softer and more like normal breast tissue. Saline implants tend to be firmer and ripple more than silicone. However, if you have a decent amount of natural breast tissue, the difference between saline and silicone will be much less obvious. If you are very thin and have no breast tissue, silicone implants will look and feel more natural.
Breast augmentation was among the top plastic surgery procedures in 2013 with over 300,000 breast augmentations performed in the US and over 1 million world-wide. Although volume and size are very important attributes, the feel and look of a new set of breast implants are among the top qualities that patients seek when considering a breast augmentation.
Breast Implant Sizes
Choosing the proper size for your body is important. Smaller breast implants might be appropriate for a more active woman who wants only a gradual increase in cup size, but large breast implants (450cc breast implants or larger), may be necessary for women who desire a large cup size or to correct sagging breasts after years of breast feeding.
Types of Breast Implants
Breast implants come in two basic types: saline and silicone. Both types are composed of a rubbery silicone shell containing a filler material. Saline implants are filled with a saltwater solution, whereas silicone implants are filled with silicone gel. There are two types of silicone gel: cohesive gel and highly cohesive (Gummy Bear), form-stable gel. Both types of implants are approved by the Food and Drug Administration with three FDA approved manufacturers in the U.S.: Mentor, Allergan and Sientra.
If you’re new to the idea of getting breast implants, it’s important that you get an overview of all the factors involved. You’ll need to take cost and time off of work into consideration in addition to thinking about the aesthetic factors involved in breast implants. Recovery can take 4 to 10 days. The more you understand about the types of breast implants, breast implant sizes, surgical techniques, and cost considerations, the better equipped you’ll be to make the right choice for you and to get the results that you desire.
Saline Breast Implants
Consulting with Dr. Robert Louton of Blair Plastic Surgery is essential to the decision making process. Saline breast implants have a slightly firmer feel than silicone implants, and are slightly cheaper. The shell surface comes in two options: smooth or textured. The fill volume is flexible and allows for adjustments by the physician during surgery. The saline implants are a safer choice in the event of a rupture because the fill material is a natural solution that is similar to that already found in the body.
Gummy Bear Breast Implants
These implants are made of a highly cohesive, form-stable silicone gel. Compared with the other types of silicone gel implants, the silicone particles in the gummy bear implants are more cross-linked, so the material bands together more closely. If you cut a gummy bear implant in half, the gel stays put. As a result, there is minimal risk of gel migration if the implant shell ruptures, making them a safer option while still providing the more natural feel and appearance that only silicone can create. As a recognized leader in breast enhancement surgery, Dr. Robert Louton has extensive experience with gummy bear implants and states, “They cost a bit more but the results are worth it” Dr. Louton was the first plastic surgeon in Central Pennsylvania to offer Sientra’s highly cohesive silicone gel implants after their approval in 2012. Eyebrows Are All The Rage Now Before
Getting-Ready… can be hectic, no matter if it’s to the store, to the doctor, to work, to dinner or out to somewhere else, we often feel hurried. If part of your morning routine is applying daily eyebrow pencil or eyeliner, those days can be been long gone. With the increasing popularity of permanent cosmetics many people have already shortened their morning routine. Why not consider permanent eyebrows or eyeliner or even lip color? These procedures have been done for decades. It’s not just in Hollywood anymore. As a matter of fact Lorie Litzinger of Bellefonte has been simplifying the lives of many women throughout PA and surrounding states by applying permanent cosmetics for over for 12 years. She’s done thousands of procedures on clients’ ranging in age from 18-94. If you are someone who cares about your appearance, no matter how busy you are, how tired you are , or how old you are, permanent makeup is time saving and convenient. And, for the times we just don’t want to bother with it..no worries…it’s already there. As we age and the ability to apply makeup nicely is being compromised, wouldn’t it be nice to know there is a solution for looking your best….effortlessly. Eyebrows are all the rage right now. Great eyebrows frame your eyes and give your entire face a more polished look. Lorie Litzinger works closely with each brow client to strategically place hair-like strokes of pigment to simulate brow hairs and will cluster them together to form a pretty and natural looking eyebrow. Even a small brow improvement can restore the confidence in your appearance. Check out the photos on this page and see the benefits of permanent eyebrow reshaping and restoring on a few her clients. Call Lorie Litzinger for a free consultation and see how she can improve your brows.

High Performance Housing (i.e. high efficiency appliances, LED light bulbs), and sealing of leaks. It will also involve larger components such as high efficiency heating and cooling systems, increased insulation levels and structural features. Whether you are looking to improve the efficiency, operating costs and value of your current home, or are considering what property would be the best value when purchasing, selecting the high performance options is the way to go. To determine the real value of a home, as well as what projects you should consider for an existing home, the best first step is to have an energy audit done by a certified professional. The energy audit will help identify what items can be addressed to produce the greatest value and reduce your costs. The best high performance houses will have an efficiency rating such as HERS or HES scores For more information on what you can do to improve the performance of your home or identify desirable home contact your local Green Realtor.
Do you own a high performance house? Are you one of the prudent buyers who is looking to buy a high performance house? Do you even know what a high performance property is? If you are not familiar with the term “High Performance” in relationship to housing, you are not alone. Most people look at houses in terms of features such as the number of bedrooms, square footage, what type of countertops does it have, what will my monthly mortgage payment be? These are all good questions and a part of the home buying process. Conversely those attributes are often at the basis of how Seller’s determine what the sale price of their property should be. While those features are important, more and more people are coming to the realization that there are other aspects of a home that make it desirable and affordable. Many of these items are often described as operating costs, such as how much you spend on heating and cooling, electricity, water, structural maintenance and the expenses in providing a healthy environment to live in. Increasingly people are coming to the realization that the true value of a property is determined by considering housing as a collection of systems working together. High performance housing includes a multitude of features that improve the efficiency of operation. It includes simple things such as low flow water features, reduced electrical usage through new technologies

Create Your Own Container Garden With This How-To Guide Creating a container garden is not difficult, you can create them as simply or elaborate as you choose to. Once you have selected your container, the selection of plant material is as easy as 1-2-3. The first step is to choose a plant with interesting appeal; this will be your focal point. Usually this plant will have some vertical height. Some examples of this plant might be an ornamental grass, annuals or perennials with a height of 15”-18” or taller or a tropical plant. Step two is to choose your filler plant. This plant will fill in the space in front and around the focal plant. They are normally more of a rounded plant and are placed in the middle of the container. Step three is your trailing plant. This plant is placed to the front and or side of the container. These plants have a trailing habit. Some examples of this plant would be Bacopa and Potato Vine. Once the container is planted add a slow release fertilizer (15-7-15 is a good choice) that will feed your plants throughout the growing season. After all the steps are complete, you have successfully created May / June 2014
your own container garden. As always we suggest that you be aware of your light location and select plant material that will perform well in these locations. Water your plants regularly, if the soil is dry to the touch it is time to water, making sure the water soaks into the soil and doesn’t just wet the foliage. Health
I Have Hearing Loss…Can My Friends And Family Help Me? Absolutely. You and your family can work together to make hearing easier. Here are some things you can do: • Tell your friends and family about your hearing loss. They need to know that hearing and understanding is hard for you. The more times you tell the people you spend time with, the more likely it is that they will remember to help you. • Ask your friends and family to face you when they talk so that you can see their faces. If you watch their faces move and see their expressions and body language, it may help you to understand them better. • Ask people to speak louder, but not shout. Tell them they do not have to talk slowly, just more clearly. • Turn off the TV or the radio if you aren't actively listening to it. • Be aware of noise around you that can make hearing more difficult. When you go to a restaurant, do not sit near the kitchen or near a band playing music. Background noise makes it hard to hear people talk. Be more particular about what time and where you go out to eat. Busy times at restaurants will be noisier and more difficult to communicate with others. Working together to hear better may be tough on everyone for a while. It will take time for you to get used to watching people as they talk and for people to get used to speaking louder and more clearly. Be patient and continue to work together. Hearing better is worth the effort. Information taken from http://www.nidcd.nih.gov/health/hearing/pages/older.aspx

Brain Experts’ Best Memory Tricks
Part Two
Do you wish your memory was a little sharper? Want to remember names and numbers as you could a few years back? Here are some more techniques to enhance your memory (see the March Women’s Journal for Part One): How to Remember Where Things Are Visual reminders are like crutches. Without them we have to conjure up an answer from thin air. Storing an umbrella (or keys or sunglasses) right by the outside door makes you more likely to remember to find it and take it with you. Having a habitual storage spot, like an umbrella stand, is another memory booster. “Leaving it where you can see it so you don’t forget helps your prospective memory, which is remembering to remember things, like where you put something,” psychiatrist Gary Small says. But what if the umbrella stand becomes “invisible” to you because it is sunny most days, so you risk forgetting it when it rains? Again, use a visual reminder, Small says. Move the umbrella right in front of the door as soon as you see a forecast for rain. Similarly, leave papers you need to take home with you on the floor beside your desk, right I read it in the Women’s Journal!
in your footpath. Assemble ingredients on a counter before you begin cooking so you don’t forget anything. Put a package bound for UPS in your car.
Nightly Review to Recall Important Events Parents sometimes use a “review the day” tactic at bedtime to give young kids a warm and fuzzy feeling and to recap the day’s best teachable moments. A similar process can help your brain recap what’s important. It’s easy: Before going to bed, run a mental review of the key things that happened that you want to remember. You got a call confirming an appointment tomorrow? Promised a friend you would follow up about lunch? Made a new acquaintance? (What was her name? her job? her partner’s name?) Better yet, carry a small notebook into which you jot critical things to remember during the day. Review at the end of the day. “Most people find
that the combination of writing and then reviewing really helps,”psychiatrist Ken Robbins says.
Repetition Helps You Remember A tactic that goes by the fancy name of “spaced rehearsal” or “expanded retrieval” is a favorite because it is so effective. Simply repeat something over and over at slightly extended intervals. Memory specialist Professor Mark McDaniel says the tactic is often used with Alzheimer’s patients. “And if it works for many of them, it can work for someone with a healthy brain,” he says. To use it: Say you want to remember a name or a short grocery list, or you need to remind yourself or your loved one to check a calendar. Repeat the name or task to yourself. Wait 15 seconds. Bring it back up. Wait 90 seconds, then repeat. “If you can remember it after 5 minutes, you’re in good shape” McDaniel says. “It’s been well stored.” “Spaced is the operative word,” says Martha Weinman Lear, author of Where Did I leave My Glasses? “Rapid crammingmuttering someone’s name to yourself over and over in rapid succession is not the best way to commit a name, or anything else, to memory.” 19

To find out if you are a candidate for and qualify for this type of care, please call our office to schedule a comprehensive metabolic assessment and functional exam.
Neurologically, migraines are thought to be caused by something called “cortical spreading depression”. A burst of brain cortical function ,usually in the occipital area (back part of brain), followed by depressed cortical activity. This leads to lack of inhibition of the mesencephalon, allowing it to “overfire”. Sometimes this is referred to as “mesencephalic escape”. Rapid constriction and dilation of the blood vessels of the brain irritate the nerve mesh surrounding them causing your headache pain. It can also lead to other sympathetic or ”fight or flight” responses. Including: • Increased pulse and heart rate • Increased warmth or sweating • Sensitivity to light • Rapid and/or irregular heartbeat • Sleep problems • Digestive problems • Increased urinary tract infections • Increased pain

This background uniquely qualifies him to NATURALLY address chronic health problems using dietary protocols and the highest quality nutritional supplements based on specialized lab work. Dr Diehl is currently pursuing a Diplomate in functional neurology through the Carrick Institute for Graduate Studies and a Diplomate through the American Board of Clinical Nutrition. He is Pennsylvania’s first certified “Gluten Coach.” “Our purpose as an office is to help as many people as possible regain their health and realize their fullest potential through chiropractic, functional neurology, nutrition and other natural means. In order to fulfill our purpose, we continuously strive to bring the latest techniques and technology to our practice. We are truly on the cutting edge of alternative, evidencedbased healthcare”
A specific functional exam and brain mapping allow us to identify areas of the brain and brainstem which may be functioning abnormally. Special therapies can be used to correct any areas of neurological dysregulation. Specific adjustments, olfactory, auditory and visual stimulation, auricular therapy, audio visual entrainment and neurofeedback are a few of the tools we can use to restore optimal function. For best results, we also need to address the metabolic causes or triggers of your headaches. • Blood sugar dysregulation • Food intolerances • Chemical Sensitivities • Hormone imbalances • Inflammation

Technology
Cyber Security and You By Paul Wells
How Can We Manage Cyber-Related Risk? 1. Protect equipment. Install and update antivirus software, spyware protection and firewalls. 2. Realize social networking sites are here to stay. Review your child’s Facebook and Twitter profiles. Make sure they do not display personal information such as full names, addresses or school names. You can also utilize privacy settings to protect their photos, location information and school. 3. Boost password strength. Utilize a mixture of letters, numbers and characters. Change them early and often, and most importantly, never share passwords with anyone. 4. Maintain an open dialogue with family, friends and your community concerning internet safety. 5. Report suspicions cyber activity. This is the simple method of protection, but it is the one often forgotten. If an online offer, email or software download seems too good to be true, that because it probably is; contact www.onguardonline.gov for more information.
We live in a very exciting era of technological progression; loved ones can be messaged from the palm of our hands, internet can be accessed virtually from anywhere and mainstream commerce has become increasingly digital. This past October marked the 8th Annual National Cyber Security Awareness month, calling attention to persistent cyber-related risks like online identity theft, cyber bullying, viruses and destructive Malware. If you have a child that is among the 93 percent of 12- to 17-year-olds using your family’s laptop, smartphone or iPad to access the Internet, they are vulnerable to multiple cyber threats, many of which could be detrimental to your electronic device or worse, their safety. It’s a reality we face in today that many children do not recognize the abundance of threats awaiting them, nor do they recognize a tweet or photo upload can impact not only their reputation and future, but their security, as well. Just last spring, Microsoft Corporation released research indicating that over 55 percent of children and teens acknowledge they give little or no thought to the consequences of “posting” something online. To further this technological dilemma, a separate research survey indicated 1 in 4 parents are “overwhelmed” by technology and hope their children’s decisions are for the best.
Cyber security is a moving target, and as threats develop daily, it is important for parents to play an active role in educating youth about the facts, the risks and the ways to improve the safety of the online experience. Through informing ourselves and our community, we can champion this growing issue. Paul Wells is a Senior at The Pennsylvania State University pursuing a Bachelor of the Arts degree in Communication Arts & Sciences, with emphasis on computer mediated communications.
As hackers continue plotting attacks, the increase in cyber-related risk and exploitation susceptibility amid children and teens is probable, but most importantly parents may not realize they are actually the first line of defense in protecting their families from internet dangers.

Health
WOMEN’S HEARTS ARE DIFFERENT Women and men are different in so many ways, including heart health. Once thought to be the same but simply smaller than men, women are finally being recognized as being different in body, mind and spirit! We laugh and cry at different things and we even tend to enjoy and excel at different activities. From the chemical make-up in our brains to our physical bodies, we are different than men…and our hearts are no exception! Cardiovascular disease is the #1 killer of women, regardless of race. It is more fatal than all forms of cancer combined and claims the lives of nearly 350,000 women every year.
We’ve teamed up to win your heart.
Why?
Susquehanna Health and Cleveland Clinic have joined forces to raise the standard of heart care in this region. Susquehanna Health has always been known for quality heart care. And Ohio-based Cleveland Clinic has been ranked #1 in heart care by U.S.News & World Report for 19 consecutive years. Together, we’ll provide advanced cardiovascular services, including the latest treatments, techniques and technologies. The best heart care keeps getting better.

Since women do tend to experience “innocent” chest pain, physicians are less likely to recognize them as possible signs of heart disease.
Most of the research conducted so far has been on men. New studies, however, are targeting women to advance diagnosis and treatment of their special and gender specific needs. Women tend to seek medical treatment later than men, but ensure their husbands and fathers never miss an appointment!
Heart disease is one of the most preventable health concerns. Take action and make an investment in your heart health!
■
Women typically develop heart disease later on in life when they may already be living with other health conditions, such as osteoporosis and Alzheimer’s. These health conditions can mask the signs and symptoms of heart disease.
Remember: one of the reasons this disease fatally affects more women than men is that women are reluctant to put themselves and their needs first. If this sounds like you, keep in mind that your family needs you to be healthy!
■
Women are more likely to have less obvious heart attack symptoms, such as shoulder pain, nausea, vomiting and heart flutters.
For more information or to schedule an appointment with a Susquehanna Health cardiologist call (570) 321-2800 or visit SusquehannaHealth.org/Heart

What is an Annulment?
On t.v., or in tabloid you will often see or hear celebrity couples getting “an annulment.” In Pennsylvania though, an annulment is very rare. The concept of annulment is distinguished from divorce in that a decree of divorce terminates the marriage, while a decree of annulment is a determination that the marriage never existed. Strictly speaking, a proceeding to annul a void marriage is superfluous because the marriage is void from the beginning and therefore nonexistent. There are two types of annulment. One type of annulment means that the marriage was absolutely invalid from the very beginning of the marriage and the defect can never be cured. This type of annulment is called a ‘void annulment.’ Examples of a marriage that is absolutely invalid from the beginning include: 1) where there was an existing spouse and the former marriage had not been terminated; 2) incestuous marriages; 3) where one party is suffering from a mental illness so much so that they could not consent to the marriage; and 4) where two people were purported married under common law and was under the age of 18. The second type of annulment is called a “voidable” marriage and involve less serious defects. These defects can be cured by the marriage. Examples of “voidable” marriages include: 1) either party to the marriage is under 16 years of age unless the marriage was expressly authorized by the court; 2) either party was 16 or 17 years of age, lacked the consent of the parent or guardian or authorization of the court and has not subsequently ratified such marriage upon reaching the age of 18, and such proceeding for annulment is commenced within 60 days of the date of the marriage; 3) where the marriage was entered into under the influence of liquor or drugs, and annulment proceedings are
instituted within 60 days; 4) where one of the parties to the marriage is naturally and incurably impotent and the condition was unknown to the other party prior to the marriage; or 5) where one party was induced to enter the marriage through fraud, duress, coercion or force and there has been no subsequent voluntary cohabitation after knowledge of such fraud or relief from the effects of fraud, duress, coercion or force. If you think an annulment is proper in your situation, please contact me, Lance T. Marshall, Esq., at (814) 308-8439 or ltm@statecollegefamilylawyer.com in order to explain your rights and the ramifications of an annulment vs. a divorce.
