Women are Affected by Venous Disease More Due to Hormones Recongizing the Signs and Symptoms

Venous disease is one of the most common conditions affecting our health. It is estimated that about 20% of adults may be suffering from venous disease. Although many people may have visible varicose veins, many others have no visible signs of the disease. Individuals with venous disease range from those with small vein disease (spider and reticular veins) to patients with large bulging varicose veins. When varicose veins are present, patients may experience swelling in the legs as well as skin changes such as discoloration, thickening of the skin, and in advanced cases, skin ulcers. Occasionally, large varicose veins may develop blood clots, a condition called superficial phlebitis. Patients without visible signs of venous disease may have symptoms such as leg pain (aching or cramping), leg heaviness or fatigue, swelling, throbbing, burning, itching or tenderness. Some people also experience restless legs.

This article was provided by Circulatory Centers. They have specialized in the treatment of vein issues and vein disease for over 30 years. Their boardcertified doctors and vascular surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating circulatory issues caused by veins dysfunction. With over 31 offices in seven states, Circulatory Centers are the vein treatment provider doctors recommend most. For more information, visit www.VeinHealth.com or 1-800-342-8918.

Men and women of all ages can be affected by venous disease although women are affected more than men due to hormones. Venous disease has a very strong genetic component but there are certain risk factors that can also contribute to its development. These include obesity, pregnancy, prior trauma, surgery, lifestyle, and occupations that require prolonged standing. The treatment of venous disease has come very far in the past 10 years. Today we know much more about this medical problem and the diagnosis and treatment is far superior to that of times past. Venous disease can be easily diagnosed with the use of painless, noninvasive ultrasound performed in the office to determine if you have venous reflux. Venous reflux is the back flow of blood in the legs caused by weakened valves in the veins of the legs.

GIVE VARICOSE VEINS THE BOOT THIS FALL

If you experience any symptoms of the disease, you need to make sure that your physician is aware. Venous disease can be a serious medical condition, which left untreated, can lead to long standing complications. Treatment for venous disease may involve a procedure called EVLA which is a laser procedure done in the office to close down some of the larger superficial veins. Most patients also require sclerotherapy injections to shut down some of the smaller, more superficial veins of the legs. Treatment can help manage the disease and improve the overall health and appearance of your legs as well as greatly improve your quality of life. Most procedures are covered by insurance.

Healthy Veins are Essential to Living Well

k

Healthy veins have valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Venous disease occurs if these valves become damaged, allowing the backward flow of blood in the legs. When blood cannot be properly returned through the vein, it can pool in the legs, leading to a feeling of heaviness and fatigue—causing varicose veins and other skin changes. Approximately 20 to 30 million people in the United States suffer from venous disorders. While usually not lifethreatening, venous disorders still affect your circulatory system and can lead to more serious complications, such as ulcers, blood clots and/or stroke if left untreated.

Trust your legs to a leader in the vein industry. Advanced Vein Care is one of the first five in the nation to be granted IAC accreditation in varicose vein treatment.

causes of vein disease? Most vein disease has a strong genetic link, however, the more time we spend sedentary or standing on our feet, the more we increase the likelihood that our veins will have difficulty returning the blood. The most common factors are: • genetics

• body weight

• age

• gender

• sedentary lifestyle

Women are about two times more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men. Pregnancy and hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to varicose veins.

signs & symptoms of varicose veins Varicose veins do not always cause pain, and therefore, can go unnoticed. Signs you may have varicose veins include: • Tired, achy, painful legs • Tenderness around the varicose vein

What is vein disease?

There are many minimally-invasive options to treat your venous conditions—with a short recovery and quick return to everyday activities. While spider veins and early varicose veins may simply seem like unsightly medical conditions, if untreated, they can become problematic. With any underfunctioning veins or underlying venous condition, the pressure created by back flow of blood and pooling in the lower legs can lead to a progressive condition that will only worsen with time, resulting in swelling, pain and venous ulcers. Self-care—such as exercise, elevating your legs or wearing compression stockings—can help ease the pain of varicose veins and may prevent them from getting worse. However, if you are concerned about how your veins look and feel, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available. Walk in, walk out.

• Numbness, swelling, burning, or heaviness in the legs • Itching or irritated rash on the legs or near the ankles • Veins that are dark purple or blue in color and appear twisted and bulging.

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are usually fine and superficial. Spider veins are found closer to the skin’s surface and are often red or blue. September/October 2014

Screening For Lung Cancer By Kelly W. Biggs, MD Tyrone Hospital Department of Radiology In recent years we have been bombarded by news about screening for breast cancer. That’s understandable, given breast cancer is so very common in women. But did you know that lung cancer ranks right behind breast cancer among those cancers that affect women? Still more alarming, lung cancer is by far the greatest cause of cancer deaths. In fact, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancer combined. Breast and colon cancer screening are well established programs in the United States, and have been quite successful. Lung cancer screening is a relative newcomer to the world of early detection, but may prove to be an equally profound lifesaver. Several prominent institutions, among them the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force, and the American Cancer Society, endorse screening for lung cancer in high risk individuals. While there are slight variations as to who should be screened and when, in general the target population includes men and women between the ages of 55 and 74 who have a 30 pack-year (or more) smoking history and either continue to smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. These people need to undergo annual low dose chest CTs to look for lung cancer in its earliest and most treatable stage. A pack-year, by the way, represents one pack of 20 cigarettes smoked per day over the course of a year. These recommendations stem directly from early results of the National Lung Screening Trial, released in 2010. This large study, involving over 50,000 individuals, compared screening for lung cancer with CT to screening with chest x-rays. Tracking patients after only three years of screening (three CTs per patient), the data show that lung cancer deaths dropped by 20% for the CT group compared to the standard X-ray group. I must emphasize these are preliminary results. A longer screening period may very well result in an even more dramatic benefit. Advances in technology have been the key difference in tackling lung cancer compared to past endeavors. Some old studies scrutinized chest x-ray screening but found no survival benefit. We have come a long way in image quality and intervention over the past few decades. Low dose CT can detect lung nodules well before they would appear on a routine chest x-ray, and, in my opinion, with radiation exposure that is of little consequence for the age group specified. Moreover, surgical interventions have significantly improved, allowing thoracic surgeons to remove some cancers with minimally invasive September/October 2014

techniques not available to their predecessors. Of course, screening should not discourage anyone from quitting smoking. Smoking is a terrible habit that accounts for the majority of lung cancers. No intervention can match the benefit of quitting, or better still not picking up the habit. Screening is not for everyone. Some patients are in such poor health that they could not survive the surgical intervention should a cancer be discovered. Such individuals should not participate in screening. Some of the institutions have broadened their recommendations beyond the scope of the National Lung Screening Trial, to include specific parameters for monitoring patients who have already been treated for cancer, and to extend screening to those who don’t meet the above smoking history parameters but who are at increased risk based on prior exposures. For example, asbestos exposure and smoking have a synergistic effect, amplifying the risk of lung cancer. Insurance coverage may prove to bewith an obstacle for some of these groups. Exceptional Attention! It seems to me quite reasonable to extend screening coverage to patients older than age 74. The Association for Thoracic Surgery, for example, advises screening through the late 70s based in part on life expectancy in the United States. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force advises screening through age 80. In my opinion, the age at which screening is terminated should be individualized based on each patient’s condition. Our patients receive As I mentioned earlier, lung cancer screening is a compassionate care relative newcomer to the stage of early cancer detection. with personalized Because of this, many patients and even many physicians attention. There’s an App For That By Judy Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc. Smartphones offer a lot to users. They allow access to email, music, the internet and family at any moment. With the advent of applications, they also offer timewasting games, social media and tons of information. iPhones started the trend for applications, or apps, as they are affectionately called. The iTunes’ App Store was started in July 2008 with 552 applications. As of July 2014, it was estimated the iTunes’ App Store has 1.2 million apps available. Apps are big business. One of the most successful is Candy Crush, which for those uninitiated, is an addictive game where the main goal is to match the same colored candies. It is a simple idea that made millions and launched an IPO. King Digital Entertainment (KING) went public to disappointing results in March. The fear was that it is a one trick pony with Candy Crush being its behemoth, making 2/3 of King’s revenue in the last quarter. While the game itself is free, players pay to gain more lives and boosters to help get past levels and they obviously bought a lot. In a sign that the end of the world is coming, Kim Kardashian has an app where your avatar tries to gain A-list status. For a person known for doing nothing, her app is earning $700,000 a day. One of the best applications is Waze, a social navigation app that lets users share information on speed traps, obstructions and slow routes along the way. The app was so good that Google scooped the company up in June of last year for a reported $1.2 million. At this point, Apple may have started the app phenomenon, but all other smartphones have September/October 2014

Loretto was founded in 1799 by Demetrius Augustine Gallitzin as the first Englishspeaking Roman Catholic settlement west of the Allegheny Front. He named it after the town of Loreto, Italy, site of a Catholic place of pilgrimage. Loretto was built adjoining the original settlement founded by Captain Michael McGuire, a Revolutionary War veteran, in 1788. Captain McGuire willed land to the Catholic Church on which Prince Gallitzin built St. Michael’s Church in 1799. Loretto is in Cambria County and part of the Johnstown metropolitan region, but is equally tied to Altoona because of its proximity. This historic small town holds just under 1,200 citizens. In 1847, Pittsburgh Bishop Michael O’Connor invited six Franciscan friars from Ireland to establish a school and gave them the land near Loretto, where the friars constructed the foundations of what would one day become Saint Francis University. Soon after, the university was recognized by Pennsylvania and given the authority to grant educational degrees. It ranks as one of the first Catholic universities in the nation, the first Franciscan college in the country, and one of the first U.S. Catholic universities to become co-educational. The magnificent former Charles M. Schwab Estate (now Mount Assisi Friary), Lake Saint Francis, the Sunken Gardens of Mt. Assisi, and Immergrun Golf Club further complement the Saint Francis campus. Explore the fine arts at the Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art, founded in 1976. The Loretto facility at Saint Francis University serves as headquarters to the complex of four museum facilities and is a repository for the permanent collection of works of American art, Gilbert Stuart, Andy Warhol, and steel magnate Schwab’s presentation silver collection. The other three SAMAs are nearby in Ligonier, Altoona, and Johnstown. Other attractions of interest include the stunning Basilica of St. Michael the Archangel and its fascinating history. Located on St. Mary Street. Bed and breakfasts and motels abound. Fall is a perfect time to visit Loretto, and perhaps see the Flood Museum in Johnstown or the Railroad Museum in Altoona on the same weekend. Check out the many rail-trails in the region, including the 36-mile Ghost Town Trail with access near Johnstown.

Toxins are the number one cause of aging. They are often a result of poor diet, pollution, and stress. Toxins can build up in your body causing cell damage that leads to premature aging. The best way to fight toxins and detoxify your body is with antioxidants. And it’s as easy as drinking antioxidant-rich alkalized water. Alkalized/ Ionized water has been in use in Japan for over 50 years. Research has shown it to provide some incredible health benefits and in Japan it is considered to be a medical treatment for many disorders. Water ionizers are not only found in Japanese hospitals and clinics, but also in many private homes. This may contribute to Japan’s rank as #1 in the world for healthy life expectancy designated by the World Health Organization. In the U.S. we are just beginning to hear about ionizers and fortunately there are some highly acclaimed physicians that are now recommending this water. They include September/October 2014

Dr. Susan Lark, at Stanford University School of Medicine, who is considered one of the foremost authorizes in preventive medicine and clinical nutrition, and also Dr. Hiromi Shinya at Beth Israel Medical Center who is considered to be one of the top gastroenterologists in the world. So what exactly is alkalized/ionized water? This is tap water run through a machine called a water ionizer which does the following: • It filters the water to remove lead, chlorine, and other contaminants

Kangen Water Of State College

• It then ionizes the water, which makes it very alkalized, and gives it powerful antioxidant properties • Lastly, it structures of micro-clusters the water, which aids in its ability to better hydrate us.

Transition Time As summer fades to autumn it is a time to reflect on the past and prepare for the months ahead. One memory for me will be a successful High Performance Housing Tour. Several incredibly efficient house were open to the public, including some with 3-5,000 sq. ft. of living space that pay electric bills well below $100 a month. I cannot give a full description here but it was impressive to see what can be done when homes are built to Energy Star standards. When reflecting on the housing market the news has been good this year. The slight decrease in the number of sales, stable sales prices, and the overall decrease in the days on the market are all indications of a healthy housing market in central PA. As of the middle of August the following statistics* support this view: The number of successful sales were down by ~10%. This indicates a healthy inventory, reflecting a nice balance of buyers and sellers. Average sales prices have seen a slight rise (~1-2%), indicating stability and allows both buyers and sellers to determine accurate pricing without the pressures of the

Bert J. Altmanshofer, DPM

mercurial market we have seen in the past. Days-on-the-market dropped on average 2 weeks, indicating once again a balanced market where houses are priced right, inventory is adequate, and conditions for buyers (i.e. interest rates) are appealing enough to generate activity. A final positive note is that the data for State College (50% of real estate transactions in my local MLS occur there) the figures are nearly identical to the overall figures. This indicates that the trends we see are generally true in all parts of this area. That said it is important to remember that real estate is extremely localized and you should always resort to a qualified local Realtor for accurate information on what to expect in a specific area. National trends are interesting but do not assume Scot Chambers, REALTOR® ABR, e-PRO, GREEN, SRES

Community

Girl Scouts Volunteer Over $190,000 Worth Of Community Service Volunteering over $190,000* worth of community service hours, the 2014 Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania’s (GSHPA) Gold Award class made a community impact in a big way. According to Independent Sector, one hour of community service is valued at $24.91 in Pennsylvania. With over 8,000 hour served, we can begin to calculate the 91 Gold Awardees’ monetary impact; however, it is impossible to truly sum up the impact they had on the people they helped, the volunteers they led, and the community that they call home.

A SPECIAL CONGRATULATIONS TO

Dawn Franck from Mifflinburg, Union County Alison Moore from Bloomsburg, Columbia County Nicole Dgien from Hughsville, Lycoming County Rachel Kita from South Williamsport, Lycoming County

“Girl Scouts is producing leaders of tomorrow— women who will not only be responsible for themselves, but who will add untold value to their communities,” said Jane Ransom, Chief Executive Officer of GSHPA. The Gold Award is the highest award that a Girl Scout can achieve. On average, this remarkable accomplishment takes girls about two years from beginning to end to complete. The Girl Scouts who are “going for the Gold” take an issue that they are passionate about and create a plan to change it that highlights their talents and builds skills like communication and leadership. This year’s Gold Award recipients organized food drives and planted community gardens for the hungry, developed after school programs and camps to inspire children to read, get active, and be creative, and challenged everyone to join them to make a difference. In addition to making their communities a better place, this year’s Gold Awardees are breaking records! The number of awardees has increased from 79 in 2013 to 91 in 2014 - making the 2014 Gold Award class the largest in GSHPA’s seven year history. GSHPA believes that the Gold Awardees’ community leadership will inspire Girl Scouts to break the record for 2015. The Gold Awardees were officially welcomed to the elite alumnae of Girl Scouts when they were honored on Saturday, June 21st at Founders Hall at Milton Hershey School in Hershey.

About Girl Scout Gold Award The Gold Award represents the highest achievement in Girl Scouting; it recognizes girls in grades 9 through 12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership through sustainable and measurable Take Action projects. Since 1916, girls have successfully answered the call to go gold, an act that indelibly marks them as accomplished members of their communities and the world.

Want to do Fall Planting but Don’t Know Where to Start? Wheatfield Nursery Can Help

With the fall season upon us, we will begin to enjoy cooler temperatures, an array of foliage colors with the anticipated beauty of fall. It is important to remember cooler temperatures and the changing season does not mean it is the end of the planting season. Seasonal gardening is a great way to add accents and interest to your landscaping. Fall is a great time to add interest to your garden. The cooler temperatures, warmer soil conditions and increased moisture levels make it an optimum time for planting. With these conditions, plants are easily able to adapt into their new environment with less chance of transplant shock. Keep in mind to allow approximately 6 weeks for new plantings to establish their root system. By doing so, this will reduce your chances of the plant freezing out over the winter. The thought of fall brings to mind the colorful leaves. This is one consideration that gardeners are well aware of, making it a factor when selecting plant material. The arrays of reds, yellows and oranges available are endless. The fall foliage on the fothergilla is stunning with its array of reds, yellows and orange make it a breath taking addition to your garden. Some other shrubs with spectacular fall color are Burning Bush, Viburnum and Itea to name a few. Many trees offer stunning foliage as well, such as Red Maple, Sugar Maple, Katsura and Parrotia. With endless options, ultimately it is a personal preference. In additional to fall foliage, there are other great qualities to look for in an effort to find the perfect plant to add fall interest in your garden. There are many trees and shrubs that have great fruiting qualities with particularly beautiful fall interest. Beauty Berry is one of those gems with its striking fruit. Some others that come to mind are Viburnum, Winterberry Holly, Crabapple and Winter King Hawthorne and many more. Keep in mind that fall flowering plants such as mums, September/October 2014

18

fall pansies, some late season flowering sedum, anemone, asters and ornamental grasses to name a few are a great way to add a splash of late season flower color. These plants can not only be added in your garden but are great selections to add to container gardens. As we continue through the fall season, enjoy the beauty that plants have to offer in the landscape. Now is the time to add some great interest in your garden whether it would be with foliage color, fruiting plants and/or fall flowers. Wheatfield Nursery is proud to offer one of the largest selections of nursery stock in Central Pennsylvania to both professionals and homeowners. Plant material ranges from shrubs and perennials to B&B and containerized trees. We also stock a variety of hard goods ranging from topsoil and mulch to glazed garden pottery for your patio. We offer landscape design consultation services and have a Pennsylvania Certified Horticulturalist on staff. Menopause Makeover Month! A fast, simple natural way to improve your WEIGHT, MOOD, SLEEP & VITAILITY in ONLY 30 days! Have you given up on trying to look and feel your best after 40? Is your doctor telling you, "That is just how it is. You are getting older"? Is your nutritionist or personal trainer saying that you have to eat less and exercise more? (... but it's not working) Do your husband and friends just think you are a little "fanatical" because you're constantly trying new supplements to lose your belly fat and just get a good night's sleep? Do you know something is off in your body but no one is pinpointing it? WE GET IT!!!! Our entire business is set up to help women like you be able to look and feel the way you used to feel (and possibly better) before your hormones started shifting causing issues with mood, sleep, excess weight, menstrual issues or hot flashes (menopausal symptoms). We have perfected a protocol called the Becoming Balanced that has helped thousands of women. We not only listen and hear your concerns, we validate them and explain why you are having the symptoms so you understand your body better. Then we provide continuing education and support to make the changes you need to look and feel your best at any age! We can help women from 14 to 85 years of age. Our protocol is based on the pure science of how excess stress hormones will drain progesterone levels causing a woman to be dominant in estrogen. This very simple and common condition called "estrogen dominance" is key to all PMS symptoms (acne, mood swings, cramps in young girls) as well as peri-menopause and menopause symptoms. Our philosophy is making simple lifestyle changes, along with scientific protocol, and a high level natural hormone supplementation. Just eating less and exercising intensely will not work. HRT (hormone replacement therapy) in the traditional sense does not work and sometimes causes more problems. Our results speak for themselves. They are fast and make deep changes to your health that slow the aging process and prevent longterm disease. September/October 2014

Business

Piecing Your Marketing Plan Together Many business owners today are overwhelmed about how to increase their market share using different types of media. I like to refer to this as a “puzzle” because each business is different in what will work for them and what is best for their business. Effective marketing is vital to the success of any business, whether it is a one-person or a Fortune 500 company. The driving force for every revenue dollar is marketing. Imagine if I gave you a bag of puzzle pieces and asked you to put them together. What would help you? Maybe if I gave you a picture of the finished puzzle you would be able to put it together. In other words, you need to know what you are trying to accomplish in order to plan how to get there. By putting your own puzzle together and by planning what the result would look like is your marketing plan. Most of it really goes back to your business plan. What is your one year, five year and ten year vision? Whom are you trying to target? Are you developing your brand and identifying your competitors? What are your advantages in the marketplace? Your message must capture attention and identify problems, needs and wants. You must also describe your product or service; tell them the benefits and value. Your message must give credibility and include a “call to action.” Advertising. Reaching a target audience through a particular medium; putting an ad in The Women’s Journal or your local newspaper, a storefront sign, radio ad, internet advertising or direct mail. The Internet enables even small businesses to compete with national chains within their desired geographic area and customer demographic. Unlike traditional forms of advertising it allows your ads to appear to people at the exact moment they are looking for more information about your product or service. Branding. Your brand is the source of a promise to your consumer and is intended to identify the goods and services of one seller to differentiate them from other sellers. If you write articles in our magazine, consistently use the same logo/ad while delivering your message clearly, confirm your credibility with testimonials, and connect your target market emotionally, you are building a brand. It’s a foundational piece in your marketing puzzle. Public Relations. Once you have created your brand, you need to get your message to the public. Examples may include press releases, letters to the editor, seminars or speaking engagements. The Women’s Journal sponsors many local September/October 2014

20

non-profit events; this is the public relations piece of our marketing. Here too the Internet can provide resources. There are press release distribution services (free and paid) which can put your release in front of a whole host of news sources. Social Media. The current trend in advertising is called “relationship marketing”. This simply means that you can build a casual shopper into a long time client by being attentive to their individual needs. Forming direct relationships with people is still the most effective way to build brand loyalty. Your website is really an online representation of your brick and mortar storefront. Once a customer is in your store what do you do? Do you ignore them and hope they find what they are looking for or do you greet them and ask them if you can assist them and listen to what they have to say? Social networks like Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin give you opportunities to build relationships with your customers. They enable personal interaction and encourage word of mouth advertising via social likes and sharing. The Women’s Journal uses these tools and more in its online digital version to connect with readers. By cultivating a customer-centric mindset, a “marketing mindset” if you will, everything affects the customer perception about your business, for better or for worse. Working with staff, create a customer bill of rights and ask staff members to commit to upholding it. Make sure that each member of your team understands how the role that they play impacts the customer experience and how it specifically works toward fulfillment of your corporate mission and vision statement. Tie incentives and evaluations to the customer experience. Solicit customer feedback. Embrace change and continuous improvement. Remember Marketing is Everything and Everything is Marketing! Call our marketing and advertising consultants today. Let them help you review your marketing plan! Our digital marketing department can set you up for success on the web and teach you how to use the online tools mentioned above to find success both on the web and off.

Custom Closets

What’s Hanging Out in Your Closets? Whether you are remodeling your current home or building your dream one, chances are, you will have many storage issues to address. Every American home has storage areas and according to the National Association of Home Builders, homeowners define them as very important. Research indicates that two of the most important things to homeowners these days are “built-in cabinetry and cleverly hidden storage spaces.” You probably have all kinds of garments hanging in your closet – some you love, some that don’t fit, some you wish would fit, some you spent way too much money on - all of them needing a place to hang out. Accommodating all the things you own and want to store inside your closets can be a problem. Having spent the past five years in and out of hundreds of closets, visualizing the best way to maximize your space has become second-nature to me.

Jeff Ulmer, Owner

I have a BS in Industrial Engineering and worked as a Sales Engineer for ten years prior to purchasing Closets Plus five years ago. My education in engineering gives me the vision to provide you with the maximum storage for your space and my experience in relating with customers ensures a fun experience for everyone involved.

The process of designing that dream closet or optimizing the shelving in your pantry starts with scheduling an appointment for me to get to know you and how you use your space. By asking the right questions, we are able to custom design our units to meet your specific needs, with the help of our computer aided design software. Once the design is completed, we setup a time to review the design and make any changes. Once approved, the material is ordered and manufactured in our shop. The finished product is ready to install in approximately 3-4 weeks. Millions of dollars are spent each year on clothing, yet some people insist on shoving those garments into inadequate closet space. Let Closets Plus show you how to double your closet space with our wood systems. September/October 2014

Changing Your Form At Blair Plastic Surgery, we are often asked, why is it called plastic surgery. The Greek word plastikos means to mold, shape, or change form. And with autumn around the corner, change is in the air! Dr. Robert Louton and staff routinely hear firsthand what patients would like to change and why. Additionally, we also hear the common responses of spouses or significant others who say, “You look perfect the way you are”. Whether it is plastic surgery or taking time out of the day to exercise, you deserve and are worth the investment. Better health and confidence work together and can benefit everyone. If your new year’s resolution was to change your form through diet, exercise, and better lifestyle choices, you may have done well. But, if you’re like many of us, you’ve succumbed to lazy summer days, the break in routine, and the excesses of vacation travel. It’s time to get back on track. 1. Re-set your goals. Be realistic. Start back slow over the next month until you can work back up to the routine level you achieved before your setback. Thinking you can get back immediately where you left off can not only be disappointing but also open you to injury. 2. Be proud of any improvement you make no matter how small. Don’t dwell on what you did wrong or could have done better. Slow, steady progress will lead to long-term, sustainable changes. 3. Document your goals, progress, and mistakes on a daily basis. Writing things down makes them real and

September/October 2014

holds you accountable. Review nightly to identify areas you can improve. 4. Share goals with those around you. They’re essential for support and help hold you accountable as well. 5. Loose the guilt. Wanting to improve your appearance through diet, exercise, or even plastic surgery is a personal decision, one no one should feel guilty about making. We often ask patients during their initial consultation, what their goal is in pursuing cosmetic surgery. The answer is virtually never to look like a super model. They simply want to feel comfortable in clothing or more confident in a swim suit at the beach. The common objective is to put an end to feeling self-conscious about their appearance. Anyone can achieve this goal with dedication, hard work and determination, and September is a great time to start anew. Lose the guilt, identify a realistic goal and change your form… You deserve it! Robert Louton M.D. is board certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery and is an active member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. Dr. Louton offers multiple options for changing your form starting with Coolsculpting, a non-surgical solution, to liposculpture under IV sedation and surgical abdominoplasties or tummy tucks. Research the possibilities by scheduling your private consultation at either office location; Altoona or State College. 814-949-7280 / 814-234-1420.

Step up, Stand out and Look Good A Busy Dance Instructor Simplifies Her Beauty Routine... with Permanent Makeup “I am owner of Sherry Lynn’s Ballroom Dance Center in Johnstown, PA. I’ve owned a family friendly dance school since 1999. My husband and dance partner, Brian, are fulfilling our mission of taking the fear out of learning to dance by creating a fun-filled and easy environment in which to learn ballroom dancing. After almost 25 years of literally in the spotlight and having a strong aversion to tattoo’s I became enticed by the idea of permanent makeup. It was my mother, a lady of 70 years and a retired medical professional, who first inspired me. She had permanent makeup applied by Lorie Litzinger. As she recovered from heart valve surgery and a knee replacement she still looked amazing.

I was a little shocked because as a dance team we look at each other all the time. I transform lives every day by teaching the first step of fun and elegance on a dance floor

to teaching in my studio and freed me from frequent makeup checks during any shows and performances days.” Step up, stand out and look good…all day, every day. You can find Sherry Lynn’s Ballroom Dance Center information in this issue on page 40.

In January 2014, I wrote my annual goals and permanent eyeliner topped the list. Sure, I was still a little fearful… what would it look like? how painful is it? what would my husband think? how long until I looked “normal”? Months went by and I worked with numerous young brides who’s youthful appearance and beauty added to the grace they learned on the dance floor. I became compelled again and was determined to just go with it and go it alone never telling my husband. Immediately after my appointment I returned to my Johnstown studio and started teaching lessons. Six days later my husband discovered my SECRET, but only when someone else told him! He never noticed because it looked so natural and was used to seeing me in makeup daily anyway.

Program Launched to Help Women Business Owners Accelerate Growth

Left to right: Amy Marshall, (Babst Calland Attorneys AT LAW) Jayne Huston (Athena National) and Chad Feather (PNC Bank)

Seton Hill University E-Magnify recently launched a national mentoring and advisory program designed to increase growth and profitability for women business owners in Centre and Clearfield counties. The Women’s Journal spoke with Jayne Huston, Director of Seton Hill University E-Magnify and Chad Feather, PNC Wealth Management Banking Advisor and PNC-Certified Women’s Business Advocate, about the program.

What is the ATHENAPowerLink® program? Huston: ATHENAPowerLink® is a yearlong national program that pairs women business owners with a customized board of advisors who provide financial advice, business best practices, networking and technical assistance to help them reach their goals. The program is driven by a Governing Body of local business and community leaders who will select the woman business owner based on her needs and her company’s potential for growth. The Governing Body will assemble a team of experts in entrepreneurship, human resources, banking, sales, accounting, law and her industry to advise her on how to access capital, implement best practices and reach her operational and strategic goals. The advisory panel and woman business owner will work together for a year to tailor the program to address her specific business needs. Why did Seton Hill University E-Magnify launch this program? Huston: This region was lacking a business mentoring program of this caliber for women business owners, and we wanted to change that. It also naturally aligns with the mission of The Women’s Business Center, which provides business counseling, training and mentoring September/October 2014

24

programs to start up and growing women entrepreneurs throughout Western Pennsylvania. E-Magnify is home to the original PowerLink program founded in Allegheny County (Pittsburgh) more than 20 years ago. The Women’s Business Center program serves 27 counties in Western Pennsylvania and is part of a national network of more than 100 such programs in the nation. How does the program benefit local women business owners? Huston: The ATHENAPowerLink® program has been successfully implemented in more than 30 cities across the United States and has proven to have a significant economic impact for participating women business owners. According to ATHENA International, participants achieve an average 88 percent increase in sales, a 37 percent increase in business income and a 56 percent increase in personal income after one year of the program. Why did PNC Bank get involved with the program? Feather: PNC Bank and the law firm of Babst Calland sponsored the local program license and have active roles on the ATHENAPowerLink® Governing Body. Twenty-six percent of businesses in Centre and Clearfield Counties are majority women-owned companies. PNC recognizes the influence and potential of women-owned businesses. We wanted to demonstrate our commitment to women entrepreneurs by supporting a program that links them to resources and advice that can make a measurable impact on their business and our local economy. What is a PNC-Certified Women’s Business Advocate? Feather: PNC-Certified Women’s Business Advocates (WBA) are employees who take a leadership role in serving the financial needs of female financial decisionmakers. The Advocates receive specialized training to understand the unique challenges and pressures women in business face and offer a consultative approach to identify opportunities and provide solutions to help her achieve her financial goals. We currently have more than 1,400 WBAs supporting women in business throughout PNC. How do women apply for the ATHENAPowerLink® program? Women business owners in Centre and Clearfield counties who are interested in applying should contact Chad Feather at 814-231-6942 or Jayne Huston at 724830-4625. Applications are available at: http://www.emagnify.com/athena. The deadline for submission is September 15, 2014. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Making a Difference

Ashburn’s Animals – Providing Shelter And Adoption For Fur Babies Selinsgrove, Pennsylvania is home to the non-profit organization, Ashburn’s Animals. The director, Janel. Ashburn created the organization as a way to enhance people’s lives through animals, while providing a safe haven for animals as well. Since she already had a farm full of rescue animals, Janel began taking them to nursing homes, camps for children with special needs, adult day cares and schools while also opening the farm to many others. Word soon spread and more animals in need of homes began showing up dividing her time, and that of her volunteers, between visits and rescue. What had started as farm animal rescue has turned into not just horses, llamas, and donkeys but also rabbits, guinea pigs, reptiles, birds and exotic critters. Often the owners need to re-home them for a personal reason September/October 2014

but Ashburn’s Animals has also welcomed animals that have been severely neglected, abused or abandoned. You can often find Ashburn’s Animals at community events offering pony rides and visits to the petting zoo to help their mission. The pony rides and petting zoo consists of rescue animals, many often available for adoption, allowing them to be socialized, therefore easier to find forever homes. You can find more images of the animals who reside at Ashburn’s Animals on their website (link below). Ashburn’s Animals often spends over $1000 a month in animal care and feed. Business Women Look to Penn State Team Decision Center to Improve Efficiency

BeWell Associates Holistic Nutrition for Vibrant Health

Penn State Corporate Learning offers a unique and innovative program to foster efficiency and productivity. The Team Decision Center, located at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel, specializes in facilitating group decision-making. Facilitators work with groups to organize the exchange of ideas through team exercises and collaborative technology. Monica C. Montag MA, HHP, CN

BS, NC

• Dramatic Results

• Personalized Programs

• Functional Testing

• 35 years of combined experience

• Ongoing Support

Sue Greene, director of Penn State Corporate Learning, said the Team Decision Center can save time and money in a notoriously expensive process.

Angie Wallace

“Strategic planning is generally intense and takes a lot of time,” Greene said. “With the Team Decision Center, you can efficiently decide where to start first and where to put your investment.” The Team Decision Center can accommodate dozens of people with laptops and software on-site or at your location. A facilitator asks questions, and each individual answers anonymously, allowing everyone to give his or her honest opinion on the most sensitive topics, and getting useful input from all levels of an organization.

Can correcting ADD/ADHD be as simple as replacing a few nutrients? YES! In fact, those missing nutrients are most often the cause of the problem: the child is missing key building blocks they need to make their brain chemicals. These include vitamins, minerals and amino acids (proteins).

“It allows you to hear the quiet ones too,” Greene added.

So why not start by replacing the missing pieces. We’ve found that most often that’s what is needed, not medication!

Joe Walk, Team Decision Center facilitator, explained how the process saves a tremendous amount of time. “We do a lot of SWOT analysis,” said Walk. “If you did that the old-fashioned way, it would take two to two-and-a-half days. We can do a SWOT analysis in four hours.”

Here‘s an example: Our daughter has always struggled with being able to pay attention and focus on multiple things at a time. Up until she was in fourth grade, we didn’t think that it was affecting her in school — we were wrong! Instead of taking the medical route and medication, we chose to explore a more holistic approach with BeWell Associates. We met with Angie Wallace, N.C. at BeWell Associates. She conducted a thorough interview of our daughter’s health history, diet, habits, etc. Based on our discussion she recommended an eating plan and a regimen of supplements that supported what our daughter needs. For the next several months, there were improvements in her behavior, sleep patterns, ability to focus, etc., but not completely. Angie recommended we test her using the TRIAD functional test to further investigate what was really going on with our daughter. This was an extremely valuable test that gave us the detailed information we needed nutritionally. Within two weeks of the “new plan,” there was great improvement with our daughter all the way around. She even commented that school was so much easier now that she can focus. We are extremely thankful that Angie and BeWell provide such a valuable service. Our daughter never needed medication — she needed the nutrients to support her brain, and to change her diet to support her body chemistry. We have been so impressed with the level of care and support at BeWell, we have recommended several of our friends, family members and colleagues to Angie and BeWell!” — C. M., Centre Hall, PA

The Team Decision Center has a track record of success. Area businesses have used the program to generate their own successful outcomes in just one meeting. James Campbell, president of Hope Enterprises, Inc., in Williamsport, recommends the Team Decision Center. “It was a wonderful experience for us,” said Campbell. “We walked in one morning, answered a few questions and provided a lot of opinions. We walked out that night with a complete first-ever strategic plan for our agency.” To learn more about the Team Decision Center, call 877-534-4778 or visit corporatelearning.psu.edu/wj.

STROKE CAN HAPPEN AT ANY AGE

In hindsight, the signs were there-difficulty speaking, paralysis, and weakness. But it didn’t add up. How could a healthy, 34-year-old mother of four be having a stroke? Amanda Harris and her then fiancé (now husband) Royal Fulkerson were relaxing after a whirlwind holiday. With her children, ages 8-16, out with family, Amanda and Royal snacked on shrimp before reclining their chairs for a short nap. As Amanda leaned back, she began blacking out. Breathing became difficult, and her throat tightened. Thinking she might be reacting to the shrimp, she looked at Royal, who was nearly asleep just two feet away, and realized she couldn’t talk or move to get his attention. Her right side was paralyzed. “I told myself to breathe and fixed my eyes on Royal willing him to wake up. I don’t know how much time passed before he looked up and asked, ‘Are you okay?’ When I couldn’t respond, he sat me up, and I fell out of my chair,” she recalls. In the emergency room at Williamsport Regional Medical Center they suspected a migraine headache based on Amanda’s age and good health. As her symptoms continued, a CAT

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This article is about the national anthem of the United States. For the flag that flew over Fort McHenry. "The Star-Spangled Banner" is the national anthem of the United States. The lyrics come from "Defence of Fort M'Henry",[1] a poem written in 1814 by the 35-year-old lawyer and amateur poet Francis Scott Key after witnessing the bombardment of Fort McHenry by British ships of the Royal Navy in the Chesapeake Bay during the Battle of Fort McHenry in theWar of 1812. The poem was set to the tune of a popular British song written by John Stafford Smith for the Anacreontic Society, a men's social club in London. "The Anacreontic Song" (or "To Anacreon in Heaven"), with various lyrics, was already popular in the United States. Set to Key's poem and renamed "The Star-Spangled Banner", it would soon become a well-known American patriotic song. With a range of one octave and one fifth (a semitone more than an octave and a half), it is known for being difficult to sing. Although the poem has fourstanzas, only the first is commonly sung today."The Star-Spangled Banner" was recognized for official use by the Navy in 1889, and by President Woodrow Wilson in 1916, and was made the national anthem by a congressionalresolution on March 3, 1931 (46 Stat. 1508, codified at 36 U.S.C. § 301), which was signed by President Herbert Hoover. Before 1931, other songs served as the hymns of American officialdom. "Hail, Columbia" served this purpose at official functions for most of the 19th century. "My Country, 'Tis of Thee", whose melody is identical to "God Save the Queen", the British national anthem,[2] also served as a de facto anthem.[3] Following the War of 1812 and subsequent American wars, other songs emerged to compete for popularity at public events, among them "The Star-Spangled Banner". Then came a full range of permanent hair color bases. This made human-looking permanent hair color not only possible but truly easy! However, a problem that still remained. To get permanent hair color to be accepted into the hair shaft required the addition of ammonia in the color formula. Repeated applications of ammonia dries the hair shaft and leaves the hair looking dull and frayed. Ammonia also destroys vital proteins in the hair shaft, which can leave hair looking brittle and lifeless.

doTerra- Rediscover Health doTerra- Rediscover Health doTerra has revolutionized how we look at the treatment of patients in the dental practice and in the medi-spa. Dentally, doTerra has provided us with all natural alternatives to treat gum disease, tooth sensitivity, infection, Nicole and headaches. Many times dental Carnicella problems, although manageable, DMD, MAGD become a chronic, ongoing, incurable condition because too often the source of the infection, the root of the sensitivity, the cause of the migraine could not be determined, and therefore, could not be cured. With essential oil therapies, specifically doTerra oils, because of their purity and ability to be injested, we have become able to treat the root cause of these dental problems. On Guard is a potent blend of essential oils which are anti-bacterial and anti-viral. This blend is so potent it is now one of the only available cures for MRSA! On Guard is in doTerra’s cleaning products and yet our patients can rinse with On Guard instead of many over the counter products to eliminate the bacteria associated with gum disease and recurrent infection post surgery. We clean out every tooth with it prior to the filling! The tissue response and healing response has been so profound and rapid, patients choose this course of treatment many times more than traditional prescription meds even though the oils are not “covered” by insurance. The cost of a bottle of On Guard is $25.00 the same as a copay on prescriptions and will last much longer and be more effective. We also frequently use Deep Blue. Another blend of oils, mainly wintergreen, that helps to eliminate inflammtion in muscle tissue. Because 96% of TMD sufferers ( yes that includes migraines), are the result of over active muscle activity, deep blue can eliminate the inflammation in the muscle, alleviating the TMD/migraine pain. Although it will smell like Icy Hot, the oils in Deep Blue actually penetrates the muscle tissue and works to eliminate inflammation at the cellular level rather than just cooling the muscle as Icy Hot does. Again, these oils are being absorbed by our bodies because they are natural and are working to heal at the cellular level, not just mask the discomfort.

Rosemary, lavender, geranium, cinnamon, fankincense, melaleuca, just to name a few have profound impacts again at the cellular level of our body tissue improving hair, skin and nails from the inside out. You cannot stimulate collagen production and improve skin tone by placing a topical cream on your skin. Most “beauty creams” are 1. not all natural in most cases, 2. not absorbed by the cells because the cells do not recognize the compound, and 3. because the compunds are not working at the cellular level they are really not doing anything. Washing your face over and over again with harsh chemicals that are just dehydrating the skin and causing an acidic enviroment that bacteria flourish on WILL NOT cure acne. Again, our goal is not to “cover” the problem, or mask the problem, or manage the problem. Our goal is to cure the problem, just like with dental disease, you must treat the problem at the root of it’s cause. Acne is a bacterial response from an internal source that flourishes in an acidic enviroment. Using doTerra oils allows a patients to treat the root of the problem, curing the issue permanently. However, the difference between going to a whole food store and buying let’s say cinnamon because that helps with skin, and using doTerra cinnamon essential oil, is the potentcy. One easy calculation to demonstrate their potency is in the weight loss arena. Everyone knows grapefruit speeds up metabolism. 1 drop of doTerra grapefruit essential oil is the equivalent of 5 grapefruits. This oil along with 4 others are in doTerra’s metabolic blend which enhances your metabolism, enhances your mood, and increases your energy levels. You can’t possible eat enough cinnamon to help with your skin, or enough grapefruit to speed up your metabolism, however, a couple drops of the proper doTerra essential oil will do that quickly, effectively, and inexpensively. Learning about essential oils can be overwhelming; it is essentially learning a whole new language or way of life.

Enticing Involvement in Education, Leadership & Charity

HUNTINGDON – Genna Kasun is a proven communicator, using her persuasive words and marketing knowledge as the Assistant Director of Advancement Communications at Juniata College. She writes to attract students, inspire alumni, encourage donations, and win grants for the university. In her spare time, her communicating talent is used for fundraising and social media for the Huntingdon County Humane Society; furthering the mission of Leadership Huntingdon County, of which she was a graduate in 2012; and working on a national blog, Her Campus, to encourage women to be leaders through advocacy and public service. She and her husband Kevin chaired the 2013-14 United Way campaign raising $368,000 for area agencies – surpassing the $350,000 goal thanks, in part, to Genna’s “last-minute” social media campaign. A 2006 Juniata grad, she is proud to be able to “give back” to her college and community.

Opening a Chiropractic Practice in Her Old Classroom

FREEBURG – Jasmine Reggia attended kindergarten in Freeburg, moving on to Philadelphia and Georgia to earn her degree as a doctor of chiropractic a few decades later. Months before graduation she began to search for a location to set up her own practice and went to Bucknell SBDC to learn what steps to take to start a business. Meetings began in October 2013, where they helped her prepare a business plan, establish financing, and search for a location. Those searches lead her back to her old school which now served as a Community Center. She loved her hometown of Freeburg and wanted to serve the people there by providing a holistic approach to spinal care. It was the perfect fit. She renovated the old classroom to become the office for Freeburg Family Chiropractic, Inc. She opened in May in the same small classroom where she graduated kindergarten so many years ago.

Helping Others Write Their Own Success Stories

ALTOONA – Debbi Prosser is the Director of Business Development for Southern Alleghenies Planning & Development Commission, one of seven such districts in the state. For the past 24 years Debbi has led a team of professionals to assist small and medium size businesses in the six-county region to prosper and grow. SAP&DC coordinates regional efforts with Debbi in the lead. She has served as the Team Pennsylvania Regional Coordinator under the Ridge administration, the Business Retention and Expansion Program Regional Coordinator under Rendell, and now the Regional Coordinator for the Partnership for Regional Economic Performance, an initiative of the Corbett administration. She has also overseen the activities of the Alleghenies Tourism Council, seven convention & visitors’ bureaus that develop and promote the Alleghenies as a tourism destination.

Save Your Pension When in a Divorce Be aware that it is possible for you to lose a portion of your pension in divorce. However, with the right family law help and advice, you can limit how much your spouse will get. If you were married when contributions started, the pension is considered marital property. Because of this, both spouses have a right to a percentage of the pension. While it is not automatically divided, if your spouse includes it in the suit, it will become part of the property division in divorce proceedings. Speaking to an experienced family law attorney is the number one way to stop your spouse from taking your entire pension or other retirement savings accounts! One exception to having the pension, or at least a part of the pension, excluded from marital property in divorce would be if your contributions started prior to being married. This is something that you should consult with your divorce attorney about to see what, if any, of the pension can be classified as non-marital property. Another would be if both parties have their own pensions and they agree to leave pensions out of the divorce settlement altogether. If your spouse has multiple pensions or retirement accounts, such as a 401k, every account must be noted individually or it will not be included in the settlement. Since you are a beneficiary of the account, you are entitled to all information from the benefits office. Please note, though, that it will more than likely take documentation from your attorney to have the information released. When including these types of accounts in a divorce settlement, it is important to notify the plan administrator as soon as you make the decision to file. You do this to block any funds from being removed from the plan until the divorce is finalized. This prevents your spouse from emptying the accounts prior to the divorce hearing. Once the agreement has been reached, you will need to obtain a QDRO for the pension plan benefits September/October 2014

administrator. This order will contain all information needed for the plan administrator to issue benefits when the time comes. To be sure you have the proper forms and all of your paperwork is in order, it is best to bring this up with the plan administrator when your attorney contacts them about the initial divorce proceedings. Who Is Judy Baum?

Working spiritually with the angels and Spirit has become my life's work and need. I figured out years ago that the voice I was hearing was not me, it came from a higher power. It allowed me to know things and be aware of people, their future actions as well as things that had not happened yet. The angels alerted me of danger helped me through very depressing times by lifting me and allowing me to see that the only thing that really mattered was the "now", the today that I was living. With all this awakening I have been able to help others. While helping others it gives me a sense of peace and gratefulness. The way I help people is through Angel Card Readings as well as Reiki Healing. I have been a Reiki Master for many years studying this art in Bermuda. The Oku Den Usui Reiki System began in Japan and has spread over the world which is natural healing through energy. I studied Reiki for 5 years before becoming a Reiki Master. I am also creating and designing healing crystal jewelry in which I use only real crystals and good quality metals in my pieces. I create pieces for all sorts of illnesses and some out of pure beauty because the crystals have amazing beauty in each one.

Health

The MTHFR Gene Defect And Chronic Health Problems In 2003, a genetic study called the Human Genome Project was completed. And via that study, they discovered that an important gene towards your health and well-being called the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) was defective in a lot of folks especially those people suffering from chronic health conditions!

What a healthy MTHFR gene does for you

When it’s all working right, the MTHFR gene begins a multi-step chemical breakdown process, aka methylation. If you have this gene and methylate poorly, there are things that can and need to be done to support you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF METHYLATION

Methylation is VERY important for the following processes to occur in our body: • DNA/RNA synthesis (turning on/off genes) • Brain chemical production (e.g. dopamine and serotonin) • Hormonal breakdown (e.g. estrogen and testosterone) • Creation of immune cells (e.g. NK cells and T-cells) • Creation of protective coating on nerves (i.e. myelin formation) • Processing of chemicals and toxins (detoxification)

When poor methylation occurs in our body, here is what can happen: • Cancer • Neurological Disorders…Anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s, tremor disorder, MS, Alzheimer’s, dementia, neuropathies, migraines and cluster headaches • Hormonal regulation issues such as PMS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, PCOS in women or low testosterone in men • Autoimmune disorders and Immune deficiency • Chemical sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia, and learning disabilities • Insomnia

Symptoms associated with poor methylation: Category 1: • Fatigue • Slow Recovery from exercise • Slow healing following injury September/October 2014

• Difficulty with weight loss • Slow metabolism • Low muscle tone Category 2: • Focus/concentration issues • Mood instability • Sleep disturbances (waking up often) • Clumsiness • Loss of train of thought • Mixing up words when speaking or writing • Trouble with organizational skills • History of ADD/ADHD Category 3: • Chronic infections • Yeast overgrowth • History of bacterial or fungal infections • Gut issues (bowel irritation, constipation, diarrhea) • Chronic sinus infections • Need for multiple doses of antibiotics CALL TODAY TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION AND EXAM - (814)238-0232 Dr. Thad Diehl, D.C. is the founder and clinical director of Advanced Center for Pain Relief and Wellness.
