Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms of Venous Disease Venous disease is one of the most common conditions affecting our health. It is estimated that about 20% of adults may be suffering from venous disease. Although many people may have visible varicose veins, many others have no visible signs of the disease. Individuals with venous disease range from those with small vein disease (spider and reticular veins) to patients with large bulging varicose veins. When varicose veins are present, patients may experience swelling in the legs as well as skin changes such as discoloration, thickening of the skin, and in advanced cases, skin ulcers. Occasionally, large varicose veins may develop blood clots, a condition called superficial phlebitis. Patients without visible signs of venous disease may have symptoms such as leg pain (aching or cramping), leg heaviness or fatigue, swelling, throbbing, burning, itching or tenderness. Some people also experience restless legs.

This article was provided by Circulatory Centers. They have specialized in the treatment of vein issues and vein disease for over 30 years. Their boardcertified doctors and vascular surgeons are experts in diagnosing and treating circulatory issues caused by veins dysfunction. With over 31 offices in seven states, Circulatory Centers are the vein treatment provider doctors recommend most. For more information, visit www.VeinHealth.com or 1-800-342-8918.

I HAD NO IDEA I’D LOVE MY LEGS AGAIN

Men and women of all ages can be affected by venous disease although women are affected more than men due to hormones. Venous disease has a very strong genetic component but there are certain risk factors that can also contribute to its development. These include obesity, pregnancy, prior trauma, surgery, lifestyle, and occupations that require prolonged standing. The treatment of venous disease has come very far in the past 10 years. Today we know much more about this medical problem and the diagnosis and treatment is far superior to that of times past. Venous disease can be easily diagnosed with the use of painless, noninvasive ultrasound performed in the office to determine if you have venous reflux. Venous reflux is the back flow of blood in the legs caused by weakened valves in the veins of the legs. If you experience any symptoms of the disease, you need to make sure that your physician is aware. Venous disease can be a serious medical condition, which left untreated, can lead to long standing complications. Treatment for venous disease may involve a procedure called EVLA which is a laser procedure done in the office to close down some of the larger superficial veins. Most patients also require sclerotherapy injections to shut down some of the smaller, more superficial veins of the legs. Treatment can help manage the disease and improve the overall health and appearance of your legs as well as greatly improve your quality of life. Most procedures are covered by insurance. Call 800.342.8918 to schedule a FREE consultation at one of our four Laurel Highlands locations today! July / August 2014

“I had no idea.” It’s like an anthem our patients shout proudly. Circulatory Centers is renewing the lives – and legs – of women across the country by eliminating varicose and spider veins with a virtually pain-free treatment. The consultation is FREE and 95% of procedures are covered by insurance! Visit our center near you and shout it proud.

Common CommonQuestions Questions By Judy Loy, ChFC® and CEO at Nestlerode & Loy Investment Advisors

Having money gives one choices, but deciding how to utilize it artfully can create confusion and uncertainty. While investing, saving, and debt payments are guided by individual risk tolerance and circumstances, there are general guidelines to allow for more objective thinking when making some common decisions. Here are some frequent questions I receive: If you get a raise or inherit money, should you invest it or pay down your mortgage? A mortgage is considered ‘good debt’ as it permits homeowners to finance a home and build equity in their house over time. Given the low interest rate environment of recent years, most current mortgage holders have exceptionally low mortgage rates that are fixed. You typically also get a tax deduction for your mortgage interest if you itemize. Therefore, paying down your mortgage is similar to a guaranteed tax-free instrument earning the mortgage interest rate. First things to consider are: Do you have an emergency savings? How would you invest your money elsewhere? If you don’t have savings set aside for emergencies, save enough money to cover three to six months of expenses in a liquid savings account or money market. This will prevent you from having to use high interest rate credit card debt in an emergency. After that, if you are not getting the full match from an employer contribution into a retirement plan, make that a priority before paying down the mortgage. You won’t get a better return than the 100% return you get from taking advantage of your employer’s matching contribution. After exhausting these possibilities, compare the interest rate on the mortgage (tax adjusted) with the returns on the proposed investments. Remember, the investment returns that are beating the mortgage rate may not be guaranteed so factor in your risk tolerance. Putting money into a CD at 2% and not paying off a 4% mortgage doesn’t make sense but putting money into a mutual fund for 20 years where the average return has been 8% might make sense, if you can handle the volatility, and your mortgage rate is 4%. I also urge clients to have their mortgage paid off before retirement so that there is one less expense to cover after you stop working. If you plan on putting money into a personal individual retirement account (IRA), should you invest in a traditional or a Roth IRA? The answer to this question includes understanding the differences between the two IRAs and reasons why you might choose one over the other. A traditional IRA allows for a tax deduction for money going into the IRA; therefore, if $2,000 went into an IRA in 2014, July / August 2014

4

you would have $2,000 less income to pay taxes on when tax time rolls around in April 2015. Putting the same $2,000 into a Roth in 2014, would give you no tax advantage now. Both accounts grow tax-deferred until money is pulled out, meaning any dividends or capital gains created inside the accounts are not taxed. However, in retirement, all withdrawals from an IRA are taxable as income. In contrast, qualified withdrawals from a Roth IRA in retirement are tax-free. Thus, the Roth benefits you tax-wise in retirement and a large amount of gains inside of a Roth will never be taxed. If you have an employer retirement plan through work, a deductible IRA is only fully available to you if your Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) is under $59,000 if you are single or $96,000 if you are married filing jointly. A Roth is more forgiving as it does not take into account whether you have a retirement plan through work but merely goes by your AGI. If you are single and your Adjusted Gross Income is under $114,000 in 2014, you are eligible to make the full Roth contribution. If you are married and filing jointly, you are eligible for a full Roth contribution when your AGI is under $181,000. If you are eligible for both, how do you choose? If you believe tax rates will be higher for you in retirement, you should choose a Roth. I believe a combination of Roth and Traditional IRAs (or traditional retirement plans) makes the most sense. In retirement, you may have a year you want to minimize income (possibly to not be taxed on social security), so having the option of pulling from either a Roth or a Traditional Retirement Plan helps diversify you tax-wise. As you see, there are many variables that go into making the simplest financial decision. To get the most out of your money, work with an investment advisor that can review your specific situations and talk you through your options. healthy veins are essential to Living Well

k

Healthy veins have valves which open and close to assist the return of blood to the heart. Venous disease occurs if these valves become damaged, allowing the backward flow of blood in the legs. When blood cannot be properly returned through the vein, it can pool in the legs, leading to a feeling of heaviness and fatigue—causing varicose veins and other skin changes. Approximately 20 to 30 million people in the United States suffer from venous disorders. While usually not life-threatening, venous disorders still affect your circulatory system and can lead to more serious complications, such as ulcers, blood clots and/or stroke if left untreated.

Trust your legs to a leader in the vein industry. Advanced Vein & Laser Center is one of the first five in the nation to be granted IAC accreditation in varicose vein treatment.

causes of vein disease? Most vein disease has a strong genetic link, however, the more time we spend sedentary or standing on our feet, the more we increase the likelihood that our veins will have difficulty returning the blood. the most common factors are: • genetics

• body weight

• age

• gender

• sedentary lifestyle

Women are about two times more likely to suffer from varicose veins than men. Pregnancy and hormonal changes can increase susceptibility to varicose veins.

signs & symptoms of varicose veins Varicose veins do not always cause pain, and therefore, can go unnoticed. Signs you may have varicose veins include: • tired, achy, painful legs • Tenderness around the varicose vein

vein care

k

What is vein disease?

There are many minimally-invasive options to treat your venous conditions—with a short recovery and quick return to everyday activities. While spider veins and early varicose veins may simply seem like unsightly medical conditions, if untreated, they can become problematic. With any underfunctioning veins or underlying venous condition, the pressure created by back flow of blood and pooling in the lower legs can lead to a progressive condition that will only worsen with time, resulting in swelling, pain and venous ulcers. Self-care—such as exercise, elevating your legs or wearing compression stockings—can help ease the pain of varicose veins and may prevent them from getting worse. However, if you are concerned about how your veins look and feel, you should know there are virtually pain-free treatments available. Walk in, walk out.

• • • • •

• Numbness, swelling, burning, or heaviness in the legs • Itching or irritated rash on the legs or near the ankles • Veins that are dark purple or blue in color and appear twisted and bulging.

BEFORE AFTER

Spider veins are similar to varicose veins, but are usually fine and superficial. Spider veins are found closer to the skin’s surface and are often red or blue. July / August 2014

Wings in the Park

6th Annual Celebration of “Wings in the Park” July 19 from 10am-2pm at Snetsinger Butterfly Garden

The sixth annual celebration of “Wings in the Park” will take place 10 AM-2 PM Saturday, July 19 at the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden (SBG) at Tom Tudek Memorial Park. The purpose of this free event is to educate the public about the importance of pollinators to our ecosystems and our everyday lives. Attractions at the SBG include a large Pollinator Friendly Demonstration Garden featuring an extensive variety of native plants, the Native Bee Conservation Garden and “Bee Hotel”, the Woodland Demonstration Garden, and an official Monarch Waystation. Butterflies are the main focus of study and educational efforts at the site, but over thirty species of birds have been documented in the habitat. Providing a healthy ecosystem for these pollinators is critically important as our flowering plants and food sources depend upon them. With the loss of pollinator habitat as one of the most critical reasons for the decline of pollinators throughout the United States, individuals, schools, businesses and communities can play a vital role by creating pollinator friendly habitats on their properties and in their backyards. This year’s “Wings in the Park” event will focus on the plight of the Monarch Butterfly, recently in the news because of its precipitous decline. The plan toward recovery includes greatly expanding the planting of milkweed (its only host) and nectar plants in large areas not usually considered as pollinator habitat – like home gardens and community spaces. By converting large areas of lawn and other landscapes to pollinator

friendly gardens we can help the monarch population recover. This year at Wings in the Park, attendees will receive a free milkweed plant and participate in the creation of the “Monarch Mosaic.” This four-by six-foot community artwork will travel with Master Gardener speakers to schools, Scout groups, senior centers, and other community groups to illustrate a vivid metaphor of how monarch protection can be accomplished by individuals each doing a small part. “Wings in the Park” will offer many ways to learn about pollinators. A colorful Pollinator Parade kicks off the day at 10 AM. Popular events for kids include the Great Scavenger Hunt, butterfly net construction, and caterpillar cookie decoration. Parents can learn how to garden for pollinators or hear “habitat chats” about various themes. Over a dozen exhibits will represent organizations such as the Penn State Center for Pollinator Research, Shaver’s Creek Environmental Center, and others. A pollinator-themed art exhibit will show work by local children. Community Stewards will also be on hand to share how they contribute to the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden’s mission. The Snetsinger Butterfly Garden is located at Tom Tudek Memorial Park at 400 Herman Drive in State College, PA. If you’re traveling by car, the entrance is off Martin Street, which is one block west of Atherton Street/US 322 about a mile north of the Penn State campus. If you’re on a bike or on foot, the Tudek Park bike and pedestrian trail goes right past the Snetsinger Butterfly Garden.

Central PA Hometowns: Where Our Hearts Are

Belleville

Farm from the touristy Amish attractions of southeast PA, our little Amish and Mennonite farm community of Belleville is the real thing – a lovely central PA small town where diversity and neighborliness rule. Attractions include the Belleville Sale, antique shops, local wineries, Amish stores, picturesque countryside, and plenty of good eating. Set aside a Wednesday morning and visit Big Valley and Belleville for a day of shopping, eating, and sight-seeing. Not that you can’t visit any other day of the week, it’s just that everything happens on Wednesday in Big Valley - and it generally happens before noon! Between Reedsville and Allensville on Route 655 in Mifflin County, Belleville has nearly 1,900 people, which swells three or four times every Wednesday. Bring your camera. The farm scenes are gorgeous, but do not take photos of the Amish without asking permission. Make time for Brookmere Winery, Peight’s Store, Dairyland Antiques, Country Kitchen Restaurant, Rustic Log Furniture, Old Woolen Mill Shoppes, and so many more quaint and affordable greenhouses, fabric stores, country stores, and eateries along Route 655. Cash is preferred. The neat, thriving farms in the valley offer everything from flowers to strawberries, sweet corn to fresh-churned butter. The women make quilts and home décor items. There are fresh meats, bountiful piles of veggies, and baked goods like you’ve never imagined. Bring an appetite, cash, and coolers and bags to carry home your goodies. Livestock and farm sales begin early every Wednesday morning in the heart of town. There are a couple of barn nooks to get a homecooked breakfast on the grounds. Dozens upon dozens of flea market vendors offer everything from antiques to new socks, jewelry to farm implements. You can take home live animals, fresh eggs, produce, you name it. Big Valley is home to many sects in the Amish religion. Beliefs and customs vary but this basic tenet is true: The Amish here live quiet, peaceful lives and are not on display for tourists. Your d easiest opportunity to talk the Amish is to buy something from them. Treat them with respect just like you would any other vendor and take home fresh veggies and a whoopie pie or two.

SUMMER SLIM DOWN

1st Annual Carnicella/Kenlee Weight Loss Challenge Don’t miss another day to start slimming down to a new you. In the last edition of the Women’s Journal we talked about losing weight. So many of our readers were excited and intrigued, however, as with Nicole most weight loss systems, it can Carnicella be overwhelming to actually start. DMD, MAGD It can be scary and daunting to attempt another weight loss program when so many have failed in the past. Therefore, instead of just wishing, or talking about starting to develop a new you, we decided to help you become a new you. That’s why you can’t waste another minute, enter our contest now!!! We are so excited to announce the first annual weight loss challenge hosted by The Spa at Kenlee and Carnicella and Associates. Of course weight loss goes hand in hand with a wellness spa, not just because we deal directly with weight management via our laser lipo suction, but weight issues play a role with back pain if you are carrying extra weight, and the causes of weight issues such as diets high in acid and sugar play a role with acne and skin conditions. Of course weight loss and dentistry appear to have little in common, but again, dental health and nutritional stability go hand in hand. If we can educate people on better food choices, helping with their weight, then these improved nutritional choices will have a profound impact on helping patients keep their teeth as well. We have an amazing new machine called

High Performance Housing Tour In my last article I focused on what is referred to as “high performance housing” (HPH). Space is too limited here to fully describe these kind of properties and the principles behind their design and operation. So, in the name of the old saying that a “picture is worth a thousand words”, it will now be possible for you to come and see exactly what high performance housing is all about. On Saturday, August 9th, from 10am to 3pm, I will be co-sponsoring, with Envinity, a High Performance Housing tour of several homes around the State College area. It will also include a relatively new winery and some other local housing that are all designed and built to meet the Energy Star criteria and designation. The tour will stretch from Boalsburg to Julian and back to State College. People are welcome to stop at individual houses throughout the tour, or if you are looking for a full Saturday you can start in Boalsburg, visit all the properties and receive a prize at the closing event at the Happy Valley Vineyard & Winery. To fully appreciate the thoughtful design and construction of high performance housing you have

to see it “in action”. Each stop will have information about what makes their property Energy Star certified and people will be on hand to discuss aspects of the properties on site. At the end of the day we will be doing a wrap up event at the Happy Valley Vineyard &Winery. There will be information shared about the design and development of the winery as well as an opportunity to have some discussion on the properties that were available throughout the tour. Admission is the cost of your gas. You can take in the entire tour or stop by one or two. Come and see what is possible. For more information please contact me at ScotChambers@KW.com. Summertime Teachers What does every teacher do during the summer, besides go to the pool and sleep in? Get ready for next year of course! No sooner do I pack up my classroom, than I start planning…. what will I put up in my classroom, how will I arrange the furniture, what books will I read to the kids, what units need to be copied?

I always find it easiest to start with the physical environment. I plan out where I’m going to put furniture based on what worked the year before. I consider whether I will use a classroom theme or not. This year it will be a Hollywood theme. Roll out the red carpet! I also think about what bulletin boards I’m going to put up and if they match my theme. I may need to get new ones or make some myself.

I always bring home loads of things to do over the summer. This summer it is all the centers that I accumulated over the year. I had so much fun searching through teacherspayteachers.com for centers and games that matched my lessons and units. (The laminator cringed when it saw me coming!) My plan is to first get each center organized in a folder with all the needed materials. Then I will sort the centers by subject, reading and writing or math or by season if they are theme based. Next I am going to arrange them into crates based on what quarter I plan to use them in the classroom. I’m even hoping to be able to decide which weeks each center will be used so it aligns with my curriculum. That way, I’m ready to go the first week of school. There is always some professional training to do over the summer as well. You can see many teacher-bloggers out there holding on-line book groups on various professional development books ranging from professional learning communities to guided math groups. My choice this year is to learn more about close reading. Finally, I start looking at that empty plan book. While looking through the curriculum I find the books we are reading, math concepts we will be working on and science and social studies topic we will be investigating. I go through my files and find what worked in previous years. Frequently I find myself creating new worksheets or projects, or sprucing up old ones. If you find your summer to be much like mine I invite you to visit my blog “A Rill Classroom” at arillclassroom. blogspot.com to see what I’m doing to prepare for next year. By following me on Google + or Bloglovin’ you will get updates about my blog and when new items are posted. You can also visit my Teachers Pay Teachers store at http:// www.teacherspayteachers.com/Store/Heather-Rill to see the materials I have created. I have many games and centers for reading and math as well as classroom décor to help you decorate your room. Hugs,

Staving Off Dementia With an Active Lifestyle

BeWell Associates Holistic Nutrition for Vibrant Health

There are many types of dementia, with Alzheimer’s being the most common. Sixty-four percent of dementia is due to Alzheimer’s. It affects twice as many women as men and it will strike at any age. Only 10% of cases have a genetic link. Other forms of dementia include Lewy Body, Multi-infarct, and Frontotemporal dementia. Monica C. Montag MA, HHP, CN

Dementia has many different causes. Some are due to a degenerative disease such as MS. Some are caused by tumors and trauma and others are a result of another disease such as Huntingdon’s or Parkinson’s. Development of dementia is influenced by genetics, environment, and lifestyle. Generally, treatment for dementia is less than ideal. It is much better to try to prevent dementia than to treat it. So how do we do that? We focus on maintaining overall good health, mental stimulation, socialization, and physical activity. Tips for prevention include:

Here‘s what Angie’s clients are saying about their results: "I had no idea that my eczema, migraines and PMS were being caused by gluten. My celiac testing through my doctor came back normal, but when I did the gluten testing through BeWell Associates, nutritionist Angie Wallace and I discovered that I had Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity. Three months after being off gluten and starting a targetted nutrition program, all my symptoms were gone, including the terrible PMS that has plagued me my entire adult life. My husband is so grateful! And I sure don't miss the headaches and itchy skin. I am so grateful to Angie for her knowledge and patience." — B.B., Clearfield, PA "Approximately 20 years ago I was diagnosed with a skin disorder associated with Celiac Disease. The physician advised against attempting to eliminate gluten from the diet saying it was nearly impossible. This past fall, I was having a lot of the typical issues caused by Celiac Disease and they were getting worse, negatively impacting my quality of life. My family physician suggested we consider the gluten free diet saying that today it was much easier to go gluten free than it was. We wanted nutritional expertise that included not only help with a gluten free diet but also advice for overall good “whole body” nutrition that was realistic and usable on a daily basis. Within two days of meeting with Angie and following her diet and supplement recommendations, my Celiac symptoms were greatly improved and I was gaining weight. Additionally, Angie helped me eliminate the leg cramps I had experienced for years." — E.K., Milton, PA

Look At Yourself As You Look At Others. We tend to be visually kind to others and so visually unkind to ourselves. The two things not found in nature are straight lines and symmetry. Are you looking at a straight line or something that has perfect balance between the right and left sides? It’s man-made! The same is true of your physical self. If I split an image of your face and put two right sides and two left sides together the resulting pictures would not even look like cousins. Try it with Photoshop. However, when we look at others our brain chooses the side of their face we like the best and visually balances the whole. But we don’t do the same for ourselves.

DID YOU KNOW?

A Person Moves An Average of Twelve Times In His Or Her Lifetime —Yikes! (According To The Us Census Bureau)

By Lois Grose, President and Owner, Molly Maid of Centre, Mifflin and Juniata Counties Spring — the smell of fresh cut grass, flowers blooming, birds singing *Wake up from your dreams and face your potential nightmare. You secured that new job but then suddenly reality sets in MY LEASE IS UP NEXT WEEK.. Now what? Don’t panic -- calm down and breathe. Start making a list. The top three things on that list are to secure a professional moving company because your friends won’t be returning your call. Wonder why…..?, Contact a professional carpet cleaner and contact the move-in/out cleaning experts, Molly Maid. To get you started: Clean out your fridge, empty the pantry and cabinets of personal belongings and food, pack up your clothes, donate unwanted furniture etc. then call Molly Maid for your move in/out needs. We have experience with both. You don’t need to provide cleaning supplies or equipment, because we bring it all. Since most landlords expect the same type of cleaning for you to get most if not all of your security deposit returned, Molly Maid can handle it all. The other option is to tackle this project on your own. If you follow the guidelines below, they can help you through it.

• Vacuum all carpets (make sure to secure a reputable carpet cleaner that will clean the carpets AFTER the cleaning). Most carpet cleaners book up just as fast as Molly Maid does during certain times of the year. • Clean and dust Vents • Vacuum all hard surface flooring prior to mopping • Oven and Refrigerator — remember we talked about cleaning out the fridge. • Lights should be hand wiped—not just dusted • If your house or apartment came furnished, dust and/ or vacuum (i.e. cloth couches and chairs etc.) • Windows inside — outside for tilt in models • Blinds (now if these are so bad they won’t clean up very well) you are better off to purchase new ones and be done with it — less expensive in the long run saving you time and energy. Moving is never an easy thing but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. If you follow the above guidelines and remember to give yourself plenty of time, organize then donate items so that you don’t move them again in that box marked kitchen from your last two moves! Better yet, call Molly Maid.

The basics to remember are to leave your place in same or better condition as when you moved in. With that said, the following is a list that most landlords require to be cleaned prior to moving: • Hand wiping all woodwork and baseboards • High dusting along the ceilings and walls for cob webs • Inside and Outside of all cabinetry (that includes the bathrooms too) see my note above.

Health

The MTHFR Gene Defect And Chronic Health Problems In 2003, a genetic study called the Human Genome Project was completed. And via that study, they discovered that an important gene towards your health and well-being called the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) was defective in a lot of folks especially those people suffering from chronic health conditions!

What a healthy MTHFR gene does for you

When it’s all working right, the MTHFR gene begins a multi-step chemical breakdown process, aka methylation. If you have this gene and methylate poorly, there are things that can and need to be done to support you.

THE IMPORTANCE OF METHYLATION

Methylation is VERY important for the following processes to occur in our body: • DNA/RNA synthesis (turning on/off genes) • Brain chemical production (e.g. dopamine and serotonin) • Hormonal breakdown (e.g. estrogen and testosterone) • Creation of immune cells (e.g. NK cells and T-cells) • Creation of protective coating on nerves (i.e. myelin formation) • Processing of chemicals and toxins (detoxification)

When poor methylation occurs in our body, here is what can happen: • Cancer • Neurological Disorders…Anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s, tremor disorder, MS, Alzheimer’s, dementia, neuropathies, migraines and cluster headaches • Hormonal regulation issues such as PMS, ovarian cysts, fibroids, PCOS in women or low testosterone in men • Autoimmune disorders and Immune deficiency • Chemical sensitivities, Fibromyalgia, Chronic Fatigue Syndrome • ADHD, Autism, Asperger’s syndrome, dyslexia, and learning disabilities • Insomnia

Symptoms associated with poor methylation: Category 1: • Fatigue • Slow Recovery from exercise • Slow healing following injury July / August 2014

• Difficulty with weight loss • Slow metabolism • Low muscle tone Category 2: • Focus/concentration issues • Mood instability • Sleep disturbances (waking up often) • Clumsiness • Loss of train of thought • Mixing up words when speaking or writing • Trouble with organizational skills • History of ADD/ADHD Category 3: • Chronic infections • Yeast overgrowth • History of bacterial or fungal infections • Gut issues (bowel irritation, constipation, diarrhea) • Chronic sinus infections • Need for multiple doses of antibiotics CALL TODAY TO SCHEDULE A CONSULTATION AND EXAM - (814)238-0232 Dr. Thad Diehl, D.C. is the founder and clinical director of Advanced Center for Pain Relief and Wellness. What a Girl Wants Fanny Louton, M.D., M.P.H., Medical Skin Care and Laser Center Director For almost 20 years, Dr. Fanny Louton has dedicated her training and expertise on making available state-of-the-art lasers and other innovative non-surgical cosmetic solutions to the women (and men) of Central Pennsylvania. Her training began in Charleston, South Carolina where she attended four years of medical school followed by two years in the pathology department with the intent of specializing in Dermatopathology. But life throws many curves and Dr. Fanny (as she is called by her staff) adapted. She and her husband Dr. Robert Louton settled in Hollidaysburg in 1990 and she began re-aligning her personal and career goals. She always felt that preventing disease made more sense than reacting to it, so she trained in Preventive Medicine and acquired a Masters in Public Health (M.P.H.). In 1997, she completed a three year residency program at the Altoona Hospital, was board certified in Family Practice, and joined her husband’s Blair Plastic Surgery practice as the Medical Director for non-surgical services. As a young, professional mother of two, she felt that women needed more options concerning aesthetic enhancements. “Not everyone needs or wants surgery,” she states, “and women of different ages need different things. I want to educate women on the options and to make these effective treatments available to our community.” For this reason, Dr. Louton focuses her practice purely on offering Cosmetic Dermatology procedures. Blair Plastic Surgery’s Medical Skin Care and Laser Center offers all types of laser technology such as Erbium and CO2 skin resurfacing for aging skin, lasers for hair, vein, and tattoo removal, IPL photofacials, microdermabrasion and chemical peels, and off course the newest and “Coolest” new non-surgical body contouring treatment, Coolsculpting. July / August 2014

Biggest trend currently? Hands down, Coolsculpting! So many desire to make changes to their bodies but are too busy to take time off work or away from family for recovery. Female Fire Chief Comes from First-responder Family

MCALEVY’S FORT – Diane Yutzy’s mom and dad are fire police, her sister and husband are EMT’s and firefighters, and her brother is also a firefighter. Chances are, if you have an accident or fire emergency in Jackson or Miller townships, Huntingdon County, at least one Yutzy will come to the rescue. Diane became the fire chief at the Stone Valley Volunteer Fire Company three years ago, after serving and training as both an EMT and firefighter. She oversees the 20+ volunteers, equipment maintenance, training, and finances for the company. Her day job is as a social worker at JC Blair Memorial Hospital. Hers is a life of service we can all admire.

Full-time EMT Serves Centre LifeLink and Penns Valley EMS

MILESBURG – Angie Poorman reinvents herself often, but always aims at serving others. She’s worked in prison mental health, volunteer search and rescue, a mental health agency, and is attending Lock Haven University studying community health education and psychology. After hundreds of hours of training, she is now an EMT for State College Centre LifeLink and Penns Valley EMS. She lives in Milesburg and has a daughter and fiancé. “I like being out and doing – meeting people…to be there for them and help with what they’re going through,” Angie said.

ER Physician is Also Chief Medical Officer

ALTOONA – A board-certified emergency medicine physician, Linnane Batzel, M.D., MBA, has served in UPMC Altoona’s emergency department since July 2002. Emergency medicine and saving lives under stressful situations is a way of life with Dr. Batzel. While working in ER, she was responsible for direct patient care, as well as the education of rotating residents, medical students and physician assistant students. She became part of the UPMC Altoona Senior Leadership Team in December 2011 – as senior vice president, Quality/Medical Affairs and chief medical officer. Dr. Batzel lives in Duncansville with her husband, Todd, and their three children.

PSU Police Sergeant Also Teaches Crime Prevention

UNIVERSITY PARK – Sgt. Frannie Pollack started her law enforcement career as a student auxiliary officer at the PSU Police Department. After graduating from Penn State, she was hired as an officer at Penn State Harrisburg, returning to serve University Park in 2005. In 2008, she became – and still is – the only female sergeant on patrol. In charge of Community Education and Crime Prevention, she plans and presents programs for students, staff, and faculty on how to recognize crime, prevent it, and what the police can do. Programs are presented on request and also regularly scheduled, with topics including stalking awareness, domestic/relationship violence, and sexual assault, both self-protection and self-control.

Do You Have Jaw Pain? By Doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy Put your hands on either side of your jaw just in front of your ears and open and close your mouth a few times. Does it click and pop? Is it painful? If so, our doctors would love to help. There is not one answer for everyone’s jaw pain. We are all built differently, and we all have different lifestyles, diets, trauma histories, and pain levels. Dr. Kelli Datres and Dr. Kevin McCarthy will take a detailed history, measure the possible causes of pain, and work with you to create your very own individualized plan. Our goal is to get you out of pain as quickly as possible. Next, we like to educate our patients on ways to participate in their own health. We want to help prevent your pain from coming back. Just to give you an idea of what to expect as a patient at our office, we will use any means necessary, using proven techniques to help you. Whether it is a muscle imbalance in your jaw muscles, an immune system problem, a cranial fault in your head, or a dental problem (which we will refer to the appropriate professional), we can help take stresses off of your body using non-invasive techniques such as chiropractic care, muscle balancing, and whole food nutrition. Your jaw accounts for 40% of all of the pain your body

is able to feel. That is why it hurts so much when something goes wrong. When you have a jaw problem, it steals a lot of energy from the rest of your body in an effort to try and fix it by itself. You tend to feel run down and moody. Without proper care, jaw pain can lead more serious problems in the body. Quick Self Test: Bend your index, middle and ring finger on your left hand and see if you can open your mouth and fit those 3 knuckles vertically between your top and bottom row of teeth. If you cannot do this self test, you could benefit from care in our office. Your jaw is made up of some of the strongest muscles per square inch in the body. It helps you to chew your food, talk, and smile. You do not want to go another day without feeling your best. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health! We are now in two locations to serve you better!

Is Your Hearing Aid Healthy? When was the last time you’ve seen your audiologist for a hearing aid check? Regular visits are important to maintain the effectiveness of your hearing aid. Hearing aids can and do malfunction and your hearing can and will change over time. It is recommended that you visit your audiologist every three to six months to have your hearing aid professionally cleaned and checked. The hearing aid should also be cleaned and checked at home every day. The most common reasons hearing aids malfunction are moisture and ear wax build up. Ear wax build-up can clog your hearing aid and decrease the volume or block the sound completely. Moisture damage can come from sweating, muggy weather, rain, the swimming pool, or just by leaving your hearing aid on the bathroom sink when you shower. Daily maintenance is important. Your brain can adapt to changes in your hearing, so you might not always notice when your hearing ability is declining. Routine check-ups are essential to ensuring your hearing aid’s peak performance. Daily Care: • Perform listening checks: contact your audiologist if the aid doesn’t sound quite right. • Check batteries: batteries typically last one week. • Clean the hearing aid regularly with a dry cloth,

brush or pipe cleaner given to you by the audiologist • Keep your hearing aid in a drying container: this prolongs the hearing aid’s life by removing moisture from building up. • Avoid feedback: if this occurs frequently, it could mean your hearing aid is improperly fitted or there is a build-up of earwax in your ear. Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A is a PA state licensed audiologist with over 20 years of experience. Education: B.S. Marywood College, 1989, M.S. Vanderbilt University,1991, Au.D. Permantent MakeUp ~ Tatoo Removal ~ Options After Breast Surgery Want to Save Time and Money? Pigments are made of Iron Oxide base colorants. These colorants have been used in the cosmetic industry for years and are found in candy, confectionary pills. How is Permanent makeup performed? Sterilized, disposable needles are used to implant desire color or remove color into the dermis layer of the skin. With Permanent Makeup re-enhancements or maintenance may be desired for some people (5-10 years). Depending on the bodies ability to hold pigment. Thinking of Removing that Tattoo? EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. Consider After Breast Surgery Natural-looking Option? Areola repigmentation is an elective procedure that is the final step for many in breast reconstruction. Today many women July / August 2014

choose to have nipple/areola tattooing because it is less invasive than tissue grafting, heals quickly and looks most natural when applied by an expert. Soft tissue can be unpredictable and so the breast mounds and/or scars can be constant reminders of cancer. Clients feel that Areola Tattooing provides the esthetic "finishing touch" after breast surgery that helps them to focus on "living" giving them a renewed sense of confidence and esteem. 10 Tips for Properly Washing Your Swimsuits #1 - Identify Bathing Suit Materials- Read the labels to determine what your swimsuit is made of. Different materials require different care. #2 - Rinse and Wash With Care Rinse immediately after use. Hand wash after wearing. Fill a sink with cool water and add a small amount of mild liquid hand soap or detergent meant for delicates. Let it soak for 15 minutes then gently massage with hands to work the chemicals and dirt out. Drain the soapy water and rinse until the water runs clear.. Never wring or twist the swimsuit. #3 - How to Dry a Swimsuit - Never wring a swimsuit out. This can damage the delicate fibers and cause the suit to lose it’s shape. Instead, lay it flat between two dry towels, roll the towels up and gently press the towels so they absorb the excess water. Electric dryers should not be used. #4 - Avoid Dry Cleaning, Ironing and Bleaching - These things can cause damage to the fabrics of the swimsuit. #5 - Short Term and Long Term Storage - In the short term, keep suit flat. In the long term, keep on a shelf or in a box. Keeping them flat helps retain the shape of the suit. #6 - Washing a New Bathing Suit - Soaking a new suit in vinegar helps prevent the colors from fading or bleeding, keeping them brighter for longer. Add a tablespoon of white vinegar to a quart of water. Soak for 30 minutes. #7 - Shower Before Wearing - Showering before wearing your suit helps to eliminate substances that cause deterioration, including dirt, perspiration, oil, body lotion, perfume, deodorant and make-up. #8 - Rinse Swimsuit Before Swimming - Rinsing the

swuit before swimming will reduce the amount of chlorine it absorbs. #9 - Avoid Rough Surfaces When sitting or laying on harsh surfaces, take care not to sit directly on the ground. Lay down a towel to prevent the suit from picking or fraying. #10 - Alternate Swimsuits - If possible, have two suits on hand and alternate wearing them. Most swimsuits contain spandex, which is a memory fabric. It needs 24 hours before it can return to its original shape. Conclusion - A good swimsuit can be an asset to any wardrobe; yet with frequent exposure to sun, salt, chlorine, perspiration and more, the swimsuit’s colors and shape will deteriorate. Special attention is need to protect one’s swimsuit in order to keep it looking its best!

NEW PAP TEST RECOMMENDATIONS DON’T CANCEL NEED FOR ANNUAL EXAMS By Charles Lamade, MD, FACOG Susquehanna Health OB/GYN Don’t let new recommendations for Pap tests confuse you; women still need a gynecological exam each year. The revised guidelines reduce the number of Pap tests a woman receives in her lifetime, but a Pap test (which screens for cervical cancer) is just one small part of the exam. During a gynecological exam, your caregiver checks your reproductive health by asking questions and examining your breasts and pelvic area. This visual and manual check of your breasts, vulva, cervix, vagina, uterus, ovaries and rectum helps your caregiver find abnormalities, masses or growths that could be a problem. There is no screening test for ovarian or uterine cancer, so the physical assessment is important to detect these and other conditions that could impact your reproductive and overall health. Years ago, cervical cancer was the leading cause of cancer

death in women. With advances in treatments and screenings, such as the Pap test and the test for the human papillomavirus (the primary cause of cervical cancer), it is rare for women to die from cervical cancer today. In March 2012, after reviewing scientific evidence about the benefits and harms of the Pap test, two separate organizations, the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) and the American Cancer Society (ACS) recommended lengthening the number of years between Pap tests from one to three for women 21+. Since many women associate the Pap test with their annual gynecological exam, some are now making the mistake of completely skipping the exam. Here’s what you need to know: ■ All sexually active women, women with symptoms such as pelvic pain, abnormal discharge

Personalized OB/GYN Care Women in the region have relied on Susquehanna Health OB/GYN in Williamsport for over 60 years. Appreciating that each woman is unique, we have created a team that includes five physicians, five certified nurse midwives and a certified registered nurse practitioner (CRNP) so each patient can feel comfortable with the caregiver that fulfills her health needs and emotional well-being.

or menstrual disorders, and women over the age of 21, should have a gynecological exam at least annually. ■ Women under age 21 should NOT have a Pap test as part of their gynecological exam ■ Women ages 21 to 30 should have a Pap test every three years ■ Women ages 30 and up should have a Pap test every three years, but combining the hPV and Pap test every three to five years is preferred ■ The Pap test is not recommended for women age 65 or over with three or more normal Pap tests in a row and no abnormal Pap test results in the past 10 years, or who had two or more negative hPV tests in the past 10 years If you are unsure whether you are due for a Pap test, hPV test or a gynecological examination, consult your caregiver’s office for guidance. Dr. Charles Lamade of Susquehanna Health OB/GYN is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and completed his residency at Aultman/Timken/Mercy Hospital. He is board certified in obstetrics and gynecology.

We offer basic obstetrics, high-risk pregnancy care, routine gynecological exams, advanced robotic technology and much more. Most insurances are accepted. Often, appointments can be scheduled within one week; please call (570) 321-3300.

Custom Closets

Get Organized! With the change of seasons this fall, you’re probably craving some new outfits right about now. But before you cram one more piece of clothing in your closet, think about cleaning it up a bit. Here are a few tips to help:

USE IT OR LOSE IT.

You know it’s true: there are some things in your closet that you’ll never wear again. This is the perfect time to ditch those wastes of valuable space. Try using these guidelines... • Anything with a stain that won’t ever come up, regardless of what detergent you try

DON’T FORCE IT!

Unless your closet has been “maximized” (something we do at Closet Plus) no amount of massaging can fit 25 feet of clothing into a 15-foot closet. If you have too many “must keep” clothes for your closet’s space, stuffing everything in is not helpful - you’ll only create a headache for yourself later. Instead, consider a closet organization system. Whether you need a pro to organize your space or just want some ideas of your own, stop by our showroom in Selinsgrove to get some ideas. Make this the season you get organized.

• Anything with a hole that can’t be hidden or mended

Call Closets Plus Today For a free Design Consultation 888 649 2969 or Visit us online at www.closetspluspa.com We know you will be glad you did!

• Anything that makes you think, “Ugh, I hate how this looks on me,” when you actually wear it

You can also “like” us on Facebook to keep up to date on new offerings

• Anything that has purely “sentimental” value (it’s just a piece of clothing. You’ll live without it)

“Jeff – Thanks again for the great ideas for my closets & especially for your fast installation! You did an awesome job & I am thrilled with each of them!! I am constantly showing them off” ~Peggy D. in Selinsgrove.

• Anything that will fit you just as soon as you start up that diet again

PUT IT AWAY (THE RIGHT WAY).

There are lots of ways to stash your clothing, but you want to do it the right way. Even if you’re working with very limited space, try to follow the following:

Built In Closets • Walk In Closets Closet Accesories • Reach In Closets Pantry Spaces • Difficult Spaces Garage Organizers

• Store seasonal items away – give the primo space to things you actually wear

Call CLOSETS PLUS Today

• Try to maintain a balance of items - when you add something, see if there’s something worn or old that you can take away

For a FREE Design Consultation Call 570-742-7529 • 888-649-2969

• Don’t hang your sweaters or knits; instead, fold them to help them retain their shape • Group similar items together (pants, jackets, etc.) to help you assemble outfits quickly July / August 2014

How To Help Children Cope with Divorce Children often feel stressed, sad, confused, and even angry during a divorce. The prospect of her parents separating can be upsetting at any age. Parents can make this transition period easier by remaining positive and by providing stability and support. Try to learn what she needs and what you can do to help. To help her cope, first, make sure you are attentive and listen to her concerns. It is important to provide stability and structure so that she does not feel as if her life is spinning out of control. Let her know that you will continue to be there and that she should communicate her concerns with you directly. If you are asked why you are getting a divorce, make sure your answer is age appropriate. She is not your confidant; she is your daughter. It is important for her to know that she is not to blame for the divorce and that sometimes people just do not get along as they once did. Avoid playing the blame game and avoid speaking ill of your spouse. As much as possible speak positively of the future. If possible, discuss with your ex how you will discuss the separation. A united front regarding the talking points will help her understand what happened. You should also have a plan of when and how to discuss changes in the living arrangements. Let her know who

will make breakfast, who will drive her to school, and where she will spend the night. The more information you provide about her day-to-day living, the less confused and anxious she will feel. Always tell her you love her. It is absolutely vital to her healing process. Make it clear that you love her and that you will continue to love her after the divorce. I always advise to tell her that the divorce will be difficult but that it will work out. Make it clear that you will be there even if you aren’t always living together. Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease. In addition to supporting novel research projects around the globe, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society also provides much needed education, programs, and services to everyone who is affected by MS - including the diagnosed, their friends and families, and the healthcare professionals who work with them. Bike MS is more than just a ride -- it's a ride with a mission. Blair Plastic Surgery invites you to take part; join our team as a cyclist, create your own team, or donate your time as a volunteer! Health Coaches Make You Put Yourself First Learning to put yourself first is a tall order for most women today. Think of all the chores, jobs, tasks, worries, burdens and errands you are faced with each week as a woman. Unfortunately, your own personal health and well-being falls to the bottom of this list. Enter the Health Coach. Coaching has been around forever. A sports coach will help athletes perform to their best ability. A businessman may hire a career coach to help them be a better manager. This same theory is being applied to a health coach—a person who helps individuals lead a healthy lifestyle, which ultimately leads to benefits like disease prevention and increased energy. Preventing breast cancer and promoting the importance of breast cancer detection is a key mission of The Breast Cancer and Women’s Health Institute (BCWHI). They have established community education programs to educate women of all ages in the community about breast cancer and other women’s health issues. A health coach is one of the many services offered because overall wellness and healthy lifestyle choices are critical to breast health. Lannette Johnston, MS, BSN, RN, iRNPA, CHC, Director of Outreach Programs for Tyrone Hospital, is a registered nurse health coach and offers health coaching services. She works with women on understanding their personal barriers to reaching their optimal level of health and devises a strategy that motivates and encourages women to live a healthy. The goal of health coaching is to eliminate unhealthy behaviors that could possibly increase a woman’s risk for chronic illness or disease. “As a health coach, I am trying to prevent diseases before it could lead to treatment. Chronic illnesses are a leading cause of death in the U.S. and those illnesses can sometimes be attributed with leading an unhealthy lifestyle,” Johnston said. “I structure my coaching based on medical history, preexisting conditions, past struggles, attitudes and beliefs about fitness and health, and much more to make sure I am helping people succeed.” When Johnston meets with a potential client and performs the initial assessment, she looks at all areas of that individual’s health and establishes attainable goals. She also gives her clients a packet of information, including journals, logs and tools to help them. Johnston ensures her clients are encouraged on a daily basis so that they succeed in reaching their goals. Clients are required to meet with her face-to-face every week, but Johnston said she talks to a lot of her clients daily and sends them motivational text messages. Having individualized support and encouragement is another reason health coaching is so effective. Johnston has had quite a few success stories in the two years she has been a health coach and says that what makes health coaching different than personal training is that a health coach look at all aspects of health, not just physical aspects like weight loss. *Sheila, a 35-year-old woman, contacted Johnston a year ago for help with changing her lifestyle and losing weight. When July / August 2014

Sheila first started with a health coach she was only able to perform 10-15 minutes of cardiovascular endurance, and now is up to 1.5 hours, 6 days a week. She has lost over 35 pounds in a year in a healthy way. Shelia met with Johnston on a weekly basis at first, and now meets with her monthly. *Name has been changed for privacy “Having a health coach has given me the encouragement and motivation that I need to improve my lifestyle and continue working towards my fitness and health goals,” *Sheila said. “Health coaching is also about making permanent changes in your behavior and truly understanding how making these changes will impact your body and your life,” Johnston said. “I believe I can provide men and women with the knowledge and tools they need to reach their own optimal state of health. If they can commit to the goals we set, they will see results, which ultimately will decrease their risk for diseases like breast cancer.”

Going On A Picnic

entral Pennsylvania averages about 183 sunny days each year. Take advantage of the sunshine this summer and head out with the kids, your best friend or your special someone for a relaxing picnic.

before heading out. If you’re planning on cooking over a portable grill, make sure it’s permissible. Likewise, check to be sure wine or other alcoholic beverages are allowed.

1. Bring a water-resistant picnic blanket

While most public parks offer fresh water from fountains, it’s a good idea to bring water from home for drinking and rinsing utensils. Moist towelettes (or wet washcloths in a resealable baggie) are perfect for cleaning hands before and after eating.

A vintage red-and-white checkered tablecloth makes a charming picnic “blanket” but it won’t keep you dry if the grass is dewy. Opt for a waterresistant picnic blanket that is soft on top and features a moisture-resistant barrier on the underside.

2. Pack food in insulated carrier

It’s essential to keep food at the proper temperatures to avoid illness. Most bacteria can’t grow below 40 degrees Fahrenheit or at temperatures above 140 degrees Fahrenheit. An insulated picnic basket with ice packs will help keep your delicious meal chilled and dangerous bacteria at bay.

3. Resealable containers instead of deli containers

Your local deli offers a wide variety of cold salads and even sweet desserts, ideal for a summer picnic. While homemade tastes great, adding favorite deli salads saves time. However, transfer the deli salads to your own resealable containers for a prettier presentation.

4. Include one special homemade item

Whether it’s a new recipe or a tried-and-true favorite, include one special homemade treat to the picnic menu. For a summer twist on chocolate covered strawberries, dip fresh strawberries in premium white chocolate and then dip the tips in blue sugar crystals for a redwhite-and-blue treat.

6. Water and wipes

Here is a list of some of the great parks in Central Pennsylvania: • Big Spring State Forest Picnic Area • Boyd Big Tree Conservation Area • Buchanan’s Birthplace State Park • Caledonia State Park • Codorus State Park • Colonel Denning State Park • Fowlers Hollow State Park • Gifford Pinchot State Park • Joseph E. Ibberson Conservation Area • Kings Gap Environmental Education Center • Little Buffalo State Park • Memorial Lake State Park • Mont Alto State Park • Pine Grove Furnace State Park • Samuel S. Lewis State Park • Susquehannock State Park • Swatara State Park Pick a park and go have a pinic. Enjoy!

5. Know your picnic area

Are there restrooms nearby? Is there a playground for the kids? Visit or check out online your picnic spot July / August 2014

Community

100+ W men Who

CARE

Women Coming Together to Support the Local Community

Three small groups of women are making a powerful impact in their communities by funding local non-profit organizations. For example, the members of Centre County Chapter of 100+ Women Who Care have collectively contributed thousands of dollars to Housing Transitions Inc., The Bob Perks Cancer Assistance Fund, Easter Seals, Centre County Historical Society, PAWS, Trout Unlimited and Millbrook Marsh. There are two additional chapters that meet in Huntingdon County and SUN (Snyder, Union & Northumberland Counties). Each group meets for an hour just four times a year. Each 100+ Women Who Care member commits to writing a $100 check to the charity that is selected by vote at the meeting. The members of these groups are both young and old, working and retired, volunteers and non-volunteers, environmentalists and humanitarians, long-time residents and newly arrived. Despite their diverse backgrounds, they all have a passion for helping the charities that operate in their local communities. Some members are so passionate about a favorite charity that they will make an appeal several times until they succeed in being selected by the group. Whatever your interests, these groups provide the opportunity to meet, network and make friends with other women from a variety of backgrounds. The meetings are also a wonderful opportunity to learn about organizations that you may not know about in detail and you may not have considered donating to on your own.

100 WWC (Women Who Care)

• We meet four (4) times a year, for one hour, to nominate any 501(c)3 charities that provide services within member county. • Any member of the group can nominate a charity. • Three nominations are chosen at random, and after a brief presentation by the nominating member, all members vote for one charity to support. • Everyone writes a (tax deductible) $100 check, on the spot, directly to the winning charity.

July / August 2014

This group is perfect for you if: • You want 100% of your donations to go directly to a local charity in your community • You don’t have time in your busy life for a consistent volunteer commitment • You want to be participate with a powerful group that makes an immediate impact.

Bridal

Diamonds & Lace Bridal & Wedding Boutique

It is not without a sense of sorrow that after 6 wonderful years in the historic and charming village of Lemont, Diamonds & Lace Bridal is moving. Before opening our doors six years ago, we knew that Lemont was the perfect fit for us at that time. The beautiful open windows, the quaint atmosphere, the central location all allowed D&L to blossom into what it is today. However, we are not sorry to say that we are extremely excited about our move!! If it wasn’t for the trust, the loyalty, the consistent referrals the community has shown…we would never have been able to make this move. So, thank you! Our new location at 1524 North Atherton is located right next to door to Lumber Liquidators, Plato’s Closet and Dragonfly. The new store provides us with something we were never able to offer our customers at our Lemont location….SPACE! With only 1800 sq ft in Lemont, we quickly filled our store with inventory… and quickly ran out of space in a few short years. At our North Atherton location, we have 5,000 sqft of space to make brides, bridemaids, mothers, and formalwear shoppers feel more relaxed, with more freedom to look through our inventory. We will now be able to accommodate larger parties and really showcase what we have become known for….our very unique dresses. With this move comes better parking as well! With parking all around the building and by Rite-Aid… customers will have a much easier time visiting our store. Also with this move comes a little bit of change. Customers who have been in our Lemont location know that our décor was very eclectic with animal print, crystals and a whole lot bling. Well, we could never lose the bling and crystals….but instead of animal print we are going with very soft, romantic type of feel….with gorgeous hues of champagne, blush pinks and creams. Diana likes to call it a neopalitin type of look. We have also included new and exciting July / August 2014

services we will be offering which we will reveal in upcoming months. We draw a very strong following from the Philly and Pittsburgh area. We pride ourselves in selecting very unique dresses that have not been seen repeatedly. We listen to our brides…and when a bride can’t find something she is looking for in our store…we ask why…and listen. Then we take notes and pay attention to customers’ requests when we buy our gowns. Though sometimes we feel the words “customer service” is overused….we really, truly, 100 % believe in it. We believe in treating our customers as we want to be treated. We believe in real honesty. Integrity. Kindness. These are not just words to us. It is a lifestyle. It is the way we work. And no matter where we are located….that will never change. We hope that you are just as excited about this move as we are! We look forward to brightening your daily drives with our window displays and pique your curiosity with them!
