I Love The Women's Journal
Kelly Wilke, My husband of 40 years says there is nothing funny or creative about me. The last guy who said that about me ended up with a pair of Speedos to wear to the Rotary District Conference – right Michael W.??? I have been accused of being crazy – especially for returning to India three more times after a very interesting first trip in 2008. BUT who wouldn’t go back if they felt as strongly as I do about ridding the world of Polio. Most of the time you can find me in my State Farm Insurance office in Tyrone with my mouthy Pomeranian asleep on my desk – if only I could teach her to type and answer the phone! Oh and by the way – I am not the techy person who reads The Women’s Journal on my cell phone – just give me the old fashioned paper copy and I’ll be happy.
Sue Greene, PHR I grew up in the Susquehanna Valley raised three children Boaz, Charity and Jonathan. Moved to the Washington DC for a couple of years clicked my heals and came back to the quality of life we have here in the valley. I’m now married to a wonderful man Dan who keeps me even in my hectic life. I work for Penn State University in Business Development. I travel to companies and organizations listening to their needs and share information about education and training. I love it, I meet a lot of great people and they are excited to show me what they do. My role is to get them connected to the resources Penn State has to offer and keep them on track and competitive in today’s market. I serve on many boards, committees and have joined the ranks of adult learners working on a degree in Workforce Education. I believe in giving back to the community and volunteerism is a great way to do that so give if you can, time is money. I have had the great privilege to work with many dedicated women professionals so my wish for you is to share your knowledge, grace and experiences with others to build a community and carry on our successes. I look forward to the Women’s Journal. The stories have meaning and I can relate to them. I’m partial to the health related topics and the ads. Speaking of ads, since 85% of women make buying decisions for households today and recently I read in ASTD’s T&D magazine they are more likely to spend money on educating themselves and their children. In my experience, Penn State Continuing Education finds value in using the Women’s Journal to share information and advertise our training opportunities with success so watch for our ads and articles.
Why do I love The Women’s Journal? It’s about ME! There are plenty of other magazines about women and the issues we face, but this is the only local women’s magazine that has information pertinent to my life here in central Pennsylvania. Every article is about someone or some business or somewhere close to home. Every business being advertised is within a short drive. There is NO better source for me to get info on the services I need. Irene Henninger from Lewisburg.Married to Pete. Two children with 2 grandchildren. RN worked in Health care most of my professional life. Spend a great deal of time volunteering in activities serving others. Presently serve as President of Lewisburg SUNSET Rotary whose International motto is "Service above Self!" Love to read but due to a BUSY life , sometimes it is hard to find time BUT The Women's Journal is the Perfect place to go for information presented in an Easy Read, Have also found new places to shop, eat and problem solve . You name it---it's there. Thanks Tere----An AWESOME service to our area. LOVE YOU and ALL the Journal participants.
Adrianne J. Stahl, I am the “Stahl” at the elder care and special needs planning law firm of Steinbacher & Stahl. I am also a wife and a mother of two daughters, and I have another child on the way…due to arrive in May. My passion right now is saving my children’s rural elementary school, Nippenose Valley, which the Jersey Shore Area School district has threatened to close. I like The Women’s Journal because the topics of the articles are always of interest to me…something I want to know about or something I feel I should know more about.
Agatha Wang, is a , flutist. Can't be serious but enjoy being a teacher. Had some trouble with English class all the time, but I am now living in USA. Life is not easy, but I enjoy it. There is still so much to learn, I am still searching for answers.
Karen Teichman, Practice Manager, Central Penn Women's Health Care, P.C. An active member of Lewisburg Sunset Rotary. The Women's Journal has a unique format... written just for women (almost)! The articles are timely and cover a wide variety of topics that the readers can relate to. It's fun to pick up and read --- then share! March/April 2013
I always learn new things from reading it. It's like Oh yes, here's something important that I didn't think of it until someone mention it. I love learning about new places, new people and yes, even seeing old friends! It is always a joy to find the new journal. 6

Health
Being Optimistic about Breast Cancer It seems like an oxymoron to talk about breast cancer and good news. However, today the majority of breast cancers are found when they are still confined to the breast. To be exact, 60% are found in this state and because most cancers are confined to the breast the survival is excellent. As long as the cancer cells are not high grade with aggressive characteristics, these patients should have 5 year survivals near 98%. The reason for these great numbers is very simple, the mammogram.
E MPOWERIN G
Women
with Exceptional Attention!
The mammogram is a very good screening tool to find early breast cancers. If this simple test is performed routinely at the recommended interval most cancers are found early. Mammograms have their limits and are not a good screen in young women with dense breast tissue, but thankfully few breast cancers occur in this age group. At age 40 when the routine mammograms are recommended the breast tissue is becoming replaced by fat so abnormal findings become more obvious. Some women try to avoid mammograms because of the discomfort of having the breast compressed. Unfortunately, there is not a good alternative.
Our patients receive compassionate care with personalized attention. After all, they are the center of our Health Care Team.
The ultrasound is used in conjunction with the mammogram to better define an abnormal finding. It is a very good test to distinguish between solid and cystic masses. Solid masses may be cancers and need further study, whereas, most cysts are benign. Ultrasound, however, is not a good screening test. To slide over the entire breast with the ultrasound probe in an attempt to find a hidden mass is quite difficult. In fact a mass may cause the probe to move more quickly in that firm area thus making it unlikely to be seen. When the probe is used to look at a specific site seen on mammogram or for a palpable lump, it can be directed at the point of interest to see the mass or cyst. In this way it can be used not only to define the problem but also to guide a needle to perform a biopsy or drain a cyst.
David Arbutina, M.D., FACS, Board Certified General Surgeon
The breast MRI is the last tool to discuss when trying to detect and define breast problems. This test is very sensitive and demonstrates many different densities of breast tissue. For this reason it is prone to many false positive findings, which means it tends to see suspicious lumps which really are not there. Radiologists have a difficult time telling what is and is not important. Therefore, it can lead to unnecessary biopsies and additional test. Also, the MRI is very expensive and may not be covered by insurance. MRI does have some clinical benefit in the correct setting. In the very young patient when the breast tissue is dense mammograms are of little use so the MRI is an alternative. In cases when the mammogram is normal but a clinical suspicion is high an MRI may be ordered. But these are special cases, and the MRI should not be used as a screen.
Dr. Arbutina has focused expertise in breast cancer surgery and more than 25 years of treatment of breast disease.

Continuing Education
Penn State Lewistown Center Gives RNs Opportunity to Earn B.S. Degree While Working By Deborah A. Benedetti
RN Heather Lehman (pictured here with her husband) is taking courses toward her bachelor’s degree in nursing at the Penn State Lewistown Center.
The employment outlook for registered nurses (RNs) is bright, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, which projects 26 percent employment growth through 2020. For RNs with a diploma or associate degree who want to prepare for managerial roles, a bachelor’s degree in nursing is a must. A pilot project is under way to explore delivering this degree to Penn State locations statewide, including the Penn State Learning Center in Lewistown, where four nurses are among 16 participating in an accelerated degree that can be completed in about ten and a half months.
The courses are held on Fridays and run for seven weeks, enabling RNs to work while earning their degree. Nurses with a current RN license are eligible to receive up to 33 credits for their RN diploma toward the bachelor’s degree.
Nursing students work in the Health and Science Lab at the Penn State Lewistown Center.
“There are many diploma RNs who are looking to advance their careers, and we wanted to make it as easy as possible for them to do that locally,” said Tom Walker, director of the Penn State Lewistown Center. “The pilot fits perfectly with our partnership with the Lewistown Hospital and its School of Nursing. The B.S. degree is a natural next step for RNs.”
According to Madeline Mattern, coordinator of Outreach Programs for Penn State’s School of Nursing, which offers the RN to B.S., “Penn State is looking at how to help people living in rural areas access programs in the best format for their lifestyle. This is why we are piloting an accelerated format for this degree via the VLN.”
Paula Hogard, director of Penn State Continuing Education, added, “The program is designed to help nurses build on existing knowledge and skills. It stimulates critical thinking to prepare nurses for management and leadership positions. The opportunity to take the degree in a flexible format allows nurses to more easily fit the program into their work schedule.” That is what attracted Lehman to the program. “It is very convenient. I am able to coordinate my work days with my school days.”
And it couldn’t be easier for RNs like Heather Lehman, who graduated in 2008 from Lewistown Hospital’s School of Nursing. “I always wanted my bachelor’s degree in nursing, but couldn’t stop working to go back to school,” said Lehman, who is married and lives in Lewistown.
Nurses can use some courses in the degree, along with additional courses, to complete a certificate program in nursing management, nursing informatics, or forensic nursing. Nurses also have the option of continuing the bachelor’s degree online through Penn State’s World Campus.
When the Penn State Lewistown Center offered the accelerated courses in fall 2012, Lehman jumped at the chance to enroll. “The pilot was the right fit for me, and it came at the right time. I was in an interim management position and wanted it to become permanent,” said Lehman, whose role as patient care director of surgical services at Lewistown Hospital was made permanent in May.
The Penn State Lewistown Center offers small class sizes, individual attention and convenient course schedules—all at a location close to home. Lewistown Center students also have access to admission counseling, technology tutoring, academic advising, and the free Transitions: College and Career Prep program. For information about programs available at the Penn State Lewistown Center, Penn State Continuing Education at University Park, or the Penn State Williamsport Center, visit http://ceup.psu.edu, or call 814-865-3443 or 800-228-1627.
The RN to B.S. is delivered to the Penn State Lewistown Center and two campuses from Penn State Fayette, The Eberly Campus, through the Penn State Video Learning Network (VLN), a statewide network of 24 advanced video classrooms and innovative instructional design. The VLN’s mission is to provide accelerated education programs that serve Pennsylvania’s adult learners who need to earn credentials and degrees at their hometown Penn State campus.

Thinking of Removing that Tattoo
Lorie’s Beauty Salon has been in business for 12 years and offers tattoo removal and permanent make-up. Lorie is certified in EliminINK Tattoo Removal, Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, and Micro-Pigmentation Centre Certified Professional. Also ask about corrective cosmetic tattooing and camouflaging. These areas include areola and nipples, vitiligo, scars resulting from burns and plastic surgery hair line face lift scars. She has added these two new services to her already successful Salon.
That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?
EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos, such as permanent makeup corrections, unwanted name, gang related tattoos, tattoo markings for radiation, tattoo redesign, or impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

After Breast Surgery Natural-looking Option
Areola repigmentation is an elective procedure that is the final step for many in breast reconstruction. Once medical treatments have been completed, the option is worth consideration. This procedure requires two sessions thirty days apart. We are able to closely match the areola of a single mastectomy or able to create areolas when a double mastectomy is necessary. Today many women choose to have nipple/areola tattooing because it is less invasive than tissue grafting, heals quickly and looks most natural I read it in the Women’s Journal!

What we did to help: We tested his Amino Acids using a finger prick test that he did at January/ February 2013 home. We discovered that the amino acids that build muscle and January/ February 2013 produce dopamine, the brain chemical that helps focus, were extremely low. We added a Custom Amino Acid formula, based on the test results, to a daily protein smoothie. Food allergy testing revealed a few food sensitivities, which he removed from his diet.

The Outcome: Two months later, he had finished the Custom Formula. He was building muscle, gaining weight, and his energy levels were excellent. Best of all he no longer needs Ritalin because the true cause of his lack of focus was resolved. He finished the Custom Formula and has begun to add some foods back into his diet. Constipation is gone. As an athlete, he has much better awareness of what his body needs to feel its best; an important life long lesson!

Mother Nature Knows Best Have you ever felt helpless when you or someone you love has been suffering with a health problem? Do you wish there was something you could do at home, without having to rush to your doctor for every little ailment? Do you believe in the healing powers of Mother Nature? Mother Nature provides us with our food, our water, our sunlight, the air we breathe, and maybe something a little less commonly known to us, our essential oils. Empower yourself and your family by learning more about the restorative properties of essential oils and their amazing possibilities in your home. They can be used as healing agents, dietary aids, child/pet safe cleaning supplies, air purifiers, skin care, and mood enhancers. Essential oils are natural aromatic compounds found in seeds, bark, stems, roots, flowers and other parts of plants. They are simple, safe and extremely effective when used properly. When selecting an essential oil, it is important to use one that is as nature intended, with no alterations to its natural chemical composition. Adding “enhancements,” is questioning Mother Nature and automatically making the oil less effective and possibly hazardous. dõTERRA (Gift of the Earth), are Certified Pure Therapeutic Grade® essential oils that represent the safest, purest, and most beneficial essential oils available today. They are gently and skillfully distilled from plants that have been patiently harvested at the perfect moment by experienced growers
from around the world for ideal extract composition and efficacy. They are third party tested and experienced essential oil users will immediately recognize dõTERRA's superior quality standard for naturally safe, purely effective therapeutic-grade essential oils. At Hands in Health, Doctors Kevin McCarthy and Kelli Datres have personal experience with dõTERRA in their own home/office and are excited to share their experiences with their community. Physical TheraPy BenefiTs BreasT cancer PaTienTs and survivors Breast cancer patients and survivors deal with many side effects from their treatments, including deconditioning, peripheral neuropathy, pain, fatigue, weakness, range of motion issues, loss of balance, lymphedema, difficulty swallowing or chewing, cognition issues and overall decreased function that impacts their quality of life. Oncology rehabilitation, a specialty field that includes physical, occupational and speech therapies for cancer patients, can help improve the patient’s functionality and quality of life. This is true for cancer care in general, not just breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation. Specific to breast cancer rehabilitation, our physical therapists have special
training in lymphedema management. Lymphedema is swelling that can happen in the arm, breast, armpit or back as a result of breast cancer surgery and treatment. This can be painful and can impact your range of motion significantly. This problem could occur immediately or many years after surgery. Susquehanna Health’s Rehabilitation Services offers various treatments and techniques that can control these side effects. Pain management services are also available to help with a range of breast cancer treatment side effects. A proactive approach, with early interventions, is key to helping cancer patients and survivors maximize their quality of life. With a doctor’s referral,

undersTanding irriTaBle Bowel syndrome By Dr. Vivek Kumar, Susquehanna Health Digestive Disease Center Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive condition that affects nearly 15 percent of adults in the United States and Europe. It is the second leading cause of work absenteeism after the common cold. While there are currently no curative treatments for the chronic condition, it can be effectively managed with medication, dietary changes or a combination of both. When IBS is not managed well symptoms can interfere with your ability to work, spend quality time with family and friends and participate in events away from home. The most common symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain with either diarrhea, constipation or both. These symptoms would appear at least three days per month for a continuous period of at least three months for

a diagnosis of IBS. As part of your evaluation, your physician will also take a comprehensive medical history and conduct a physical exam. Often the diagnosis of IBS involves ruling out other more serious conditions that share similar symptoms such as Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease or colon cancer. These conditions, which require different treatments, often have “alarm” symptoms such as bloody stools, weight loss or more severe and worsening pain which are not symptoms of IBS. To rule out these conditions, imaging, colonoscopy or blood tests may be ordered. The key to managing IBS is a good physician/patient relationship. Many patients are reluctant to discuss their bowel movements and related issues,
but being open can be helpful in determining what triggers your IBS events so they can be minimized and managed. Your doctor can prescribe or recommend medications that will address your specific complaints. A food journal, which includes the type and severity of your related symptoms, can also assist you and your doctor with determining what foods to avoid and what medications may help. At Susquehanna Health’s Digestive Disease Center, our specialists provide advanced care for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome. Birth Order, Learn About Yourself and Others
Sue Greene, PHR
Have you ever watched people and thought to yourself they remind me of someone or they remind me of myself and wondered why. Well, over the last five years after I did some research on birth order I saw a pattern. So read on if you are a people watcher, like to find new ways to interact with people or just like to connect the dots.
likely similar characteristics of others in your birth order. When you interact at work, home or social events watch how others act. Do they want to lead, are friendly and look for solutions or are they creative and looking to push the limits. In conclusion, I work in a field that allows me to reach out to stakeholders in business and industry to promote training and education. My approach today is different after learning about birth order. I watch, listen and interact with a new awareness. Take a guess and ask what birth order you are interacting with and see how often you’re right. See how knowing a little about birth order can help you in your work environment. Think about hiring the right person for a job, looking for someone to work on a project, selecting someone to do negotiations. It’s been fun and for full disclosure the research was inconclusive but it did open up some thinking about possibilities why we are who we are.
When talking about Birth order, you know where you fall in your family but have you thought about others especially in a work or social environment? Some interesting facts surfaced during my research. To give you some background information I am a first born daughter and have many times wondered what motivates me and others around me. My research on Birth Order primarily focused on first born, functional first born and only children. First born means just that. Someone was literally the first son or daughter in their family unit. Functional first born children are a category with many possible variances, such as a first born daughter that was born second after her brother, a child may have been adopted into a family with no children, possibly the first born child died thus leaving the next child in the hierarchy move into the first born role. Only children are a group that has no siblings in the family unit and the research mentions other factors one being the cycle starts again if there is a five year gap between siblings. Frank Sulloway a scholar for over twenty years in the field believes one of the strongest influencers in society today is birth order. The main thread reoccurring through the research was the time spent with first born and only children in the beginning. Communication between parents particularity with their mothers was generally more.
What does your birth order say about you? Some of the different traits that were listed for first borne children were socially dominant, responsible, loyal, highly motivated, ambitious, enterprising, cooperative, good team players, command respect and they like to lead. Middle children are generally good negotiators. This point made perfect sense since they are caught in the middle between younger, older siblings and parents. Middle children are willing to ask for help, may be more introverted and generally friendly. They are sociable and this leads the way to have open discussions and be more approachable. The youngest as a group are creative, like to stand out, charming, charismatic, like adventure and generally fearless. They possibly look at rules with a lackadaisical attitude and are more likely to argue against authority yet embrace change better than the others. Are you seeing anyone you know? What does this all mean; you are part of a birth order and have most I read it in the Women’s Journal!

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill - It’s out of this world! As the owner and physical therapist at Action Therapy Clinic in State College, PA I am asked many questions about our anti-gravity treadmill. This amazing piece of equipment is an excellent rehabilitation tool for many types of patients. The most frequently asked question is... How does it work? The AlterG utilizes technology developed by NASA called differential air pressure to comfortably unweight the body so that walking, running and exercises can be performed at a decreased load. The patient enters the treadmill and a bubble-type chamber inflates up to the hips. Body weight is calibrated. In precise 1% increments weight bearing is reduced, taking up to 80% of the load off the lower body. The AlterG allows for normal gait mechanics and muscle firing , unlike some other systems that utilize harnesses or water. What can the Alter-G be used for? Post -op patients can rehabilitate from surgery with less pain and progress more quickly back to function. Because of the bubble-type chamber of air, the elderly population can exercise in the AlterG without fear of falling, making it a great tool for stroke patients, Parkinson’s patients and other neurologically compromised people. Athletes with strains, sprains or stress fractures
can maintain and improve their training while recovering from injury. By unweighting the lower body , overweight patients can feel what it is like to exercise at their target weight and save some pressure on their joints. FDAcleared uses of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill include: Rehabilitation following injury or surgery of the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, foot); Rehabilitation after total joint replacement; Gait training in neurologic patients; Strengthening and conditioning in older patients; Sportspecific conditioning programs; Aerobic conditioning The AlterG is a chosen tool of leading physical therapy clinics, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, colleges and pro sports teams. Action Therapy Clinic is one of only a few physical therapy clinics in Pennsylvania currently offering this advanced technology for rehabilitative care. How can I utilize the Alter-G? Action Therapy Clinic is located at 620 West Cherry Lane in State College, PA 16803. Call us at 814.238.8800 to schedule an evaluation. We participate with most health insurance plans and because we are a direct access provider, you do not need a physician referral to make an appointment. What the Heck is a Life Coach and Why Would I Spend My Time and Money on One? You might be thinking, like others in our culture, that life coaches are for people who have no common sense, family support, work ethic or intelligence. From my experience, that is simply not true. People find life coaching to be a huge help with concrete situations such as, making a career transition, doing a better job of handling their finances, improving their health, improving their relationships, or making a decision about what path to explore next in their lives. They come to tap into their inner brilliance and desires apart from external influences like culture, society, and family. Does everyone need a life coach? No, but I do believe that many can benefit from one. Life coaching clients include senior corporate executives to small business owners, massage therapists to stay at home mothers. Some general outcomes of life coaching can be about gaining new skills, opening new possibilities, and shifting limiting beliefs. A specific outcome could look like becoming a more loving human being; it could look like changing some simple habits or advancing at work. A life coach can help you live the best life from your deepest truth. Certainly, many of us believe we can do that on our own, but we all have blocks from our past that we may or may not be aware of that prevent us from connecting to our innate wisdom. A life coach can ask the right questions to uncover and shift these blocks by listening deeply to March/April 2013 March/ April 2013
what the client says as well as what is unsaid. This *FREE*, one-on-one, hour-long phone session will give you new clarity about your current situation and your vision for the best life. Why You Might Be Afraid To Let Yourself Smile? what it would look like in your mouth before we start. That way you can be assured you will like the final result. Comp-veneers resemble a press on fingernail, but for teeth. We match the size and shape to your tooth, fill the template with filling material, and press it onto your tooth. No shots, minimal drilling, and we bill the procedure as a 5 surface filling to your insurance company, which will cover about half of the cost. Compveneers, like Icon can improve your smile without any excuses!
Absolutely everyone wants to be proud of their smile; they want to show off a beautiful set of pearly whites; they want to display the confidence they feel inside. So why doesn't everyone have their own perfect smile? What is everyone so afraid of? Damage to the tooth? Pain? Money? Not knowing Nicole what your smile will look like? Age? Vanity? These Carnicella are a lot of the reasons why we hear patients may be DMD, MAGD reluctant to improve their smile. We are here today to let you know, none of these reasons should be used as an excuse to not smile! Not one of these excuses should keep you from the smile you always wanted. We can give you treatment options that... 1. Won't damage the tooth, 2. Won't require you to be numb, ( and won't hurt) 3. Won't cost a dime for certain cosmetic proceudres 4. Won't leave you wondering what your smile will look like (we can show you first before we start) 5. Won't have you leaving the office thinking you are too old for something (it's more important to have strong, straight teeth as we get older,) and 6. We definitely won't let you leave thinking a pretty smile is vanity, cosmetically sound smiles are also structurally sound smiles.
Finally, Fast Braces are a great way to align teeth, for cosmetic and functional reasons. "Form follows function", if the teeth aren't lined up right, they aren't functioning right. Improper alignment causes recession, periodontal issues, broken teeth and restorations. A straight smile is not being vain, it's being smart. Properly aligned teeth will save a fortune in dental costs down the road, no matter what your age. As we get older our teeth become more brittle. Therefore, it is more imperative for the teeth to be properly aligned as we get older, rather than when we are younger. Exactly the opposite of how most people think!! Most adults, however, do not want 2 years of traditional braces (now vanity might be an issue!!) Invisalign can be very cost prohibitive. Fast braces are a great alternative to Invisalign, because there are brackets on the teeth, however, they are clear. Better yet, these clear brackets only need to be in place sometimes for as little as 10 weeks, and the cost is half that of comparable Invisalign treatments.
There are 3 revolutionary products on the market, Icon, Compveneers, and Fast Braces. All of these products can resolve issues that at one time only traditional veneers, crowns, or Invisalign could fix. However, those excuses listed above, would pop up with these traditional treatments. However with Icon, Comp- veneers, and Fast Braces, we can put those excuses aside, and create the smile you always wanted without hurting your tooth, your mouth, or your pocket book.
Please don't keep making excuses for not smiling. Please don't keep holding your hand infront of your mouth when you talk, and stop doing that thin lipped smile in pictures! We can help you get the smile you always wanted. These are just a few of the many treatment options we can review with you at our free consultation visits. Call now, and when you mention this article in the Women's Journal, you will receive a free skin care consultation and a $25.00 Gift Card to The Spa at Kenlee. Call now!
White spots on teeth have always been tough for dentists to treat. These white spots can result during development of the tooth, during orthodontic treatment, or they can be decalcification from acid in the mouth. Previously, only veneers or invasive fillings really covered these spots. Most of the spots, however, are just air spaces in the tooth. Icon is a material, that without drilling, can pentrate those air cavities and fill in that void with a clear material that blends in with the natural tooth structure. No shots, no drilling, and we bill the procedure as a one surface filling to the insurance company. Icon is a wonderful way to improve your smile without any excuses!
One Beautiful Location, Two Amazing Opportunities At Carnicella & Associates we would love the opportunity to show you what truly exceptional dental care is all about. Our goal is to provide our patients with care that lasts a lifetime, and are happy to be excepting new patients. Our entire team has received special training in providing comfortable, quality dental care, and we love what we do!
Comp-veneers are another, new, non invasive, way to improve your smile. If it's large old fillings, discolored teeth, or spacing that is keeping you from smiling, comp-veneers are for you. Our only options for these issues in the past were veneers, crowns, or braces. These traditional treatments could be cost prohibitive and sometimes damaging to the natural tooth structure. With comp-veneers we usually do not have to do any adjusting to the natual tooth structure, and they are much more cost effective because there is no lab bill. We can also show you a wax up of what your smile would look like, and do a demo or mock up of I read it in the Women’s Journal!

How’s Your Health, Girlfriend? By: Karen Teichman, Practice Manager
priority, to get active, eat healthy and stop smoking!
Every year our women’s health office is greeted by a very special foursome. They have been coming to the office for six years now. This special group of family members and friends count on each other to stay healthy and to focus on the needs of each and every person in their group. Together, they celebrate a night of staying healthy. They display a devoted camaraderie; a remarkable friendship of caring and love.
Our fabulous foursome has embraced this concept. By making this annual commitment to each other, they create a healthy environment of caring and keeping themselves at the top of their ‘to do’ list. What would Michelle Obama think about that?
Personalized H C
When they visited this year, we talked about the many years they’ve been making a girl’s night out to include annual exams, scheduling of any necessary mammograms or lab work; and friendly discussion while they wait their turn‌ then out for dinner and socializing. (Last year they even brought cheese and crackers and shared with the other patients and staff!) These extraordinary women are focused and dedicated to each other and talk about the importance of keeping each other healthy. When asked why this particular night out was so important to them, we were told ‘so they can enjoy each others’ company for years to come (plus, one adds, we get to try out new restaurants every year!).’
“Women in particular need to keep an eye on their physical and mental health, because if we’re scurrying to and from appointments and errands, we don’t have a lot of time to take care of ourselves. We need to do a better job of putting ourselves higher on our own ‘to do’ list. ~ Michelle Obama
Waiting for their appointment, they share stories about what’s been happening in their lives. They talk with other people in the waiting room and encourage them to start a girlfriends-group like this‌ what a great concept! Women are known for always being caregivers and putting themselves at the very bottom of the list. The needs of spouses, partners, children and parents are usually above their own. By working together, these four ladies put their girlfriends at the top of their list‌ and engage themselves in the process. What an inspiration! Let’s challenge each other to do just that. Let’s take their lead and reach out to our family and friends and make a girlfriends’ group. In doing so, we’ll be putting ourselves on that ‘to do’ list. Little problems won’t become big problems; mammograms, annual exams get done on time. Health concerns get discussed and not tabled for another day. As a community, don’t we have a responsibility to support the important women in our lives, and help them do everything that we can to lead #07(?LOGO? #? NAMES PDF 0longer, happier, healthier lives? Our fabulous foursome has done just that!

Once a year, they get together and block out time for annual exams where they can all accompany each other to the office. If one of the group can’t make it, they find another date and time. Never do they “allow someone to skip a year. They share this philosophy with others in the waiting room, too. Who knows, perhaps this will become a trendy event for women in the future?

Canine Illustrator Publishes First Book
ALTOONA – Rachel DiAndrea published her first book, The Art of Being a Pet, describing wonderful pets and why they are so dear to us – using whimsical words and her own illustrations. A cum laude graduate of the State University of New York at Buffalo with a fine arts degree in communication design, DiAndrea has established herself as a premier national canine illustrator. She is well known in the field, creating portraitures of furry friends in French pastel, watercolor, and pen and ink. What sets her apart from other canine artists is her unique ability to capture not only the breed, but also the dog's individual personality. Schlow Library will feature some of her artwork in March.
Candle Company Success through Years of Hard Work
MIDDLEBURG – Through her passion for candle-making, Pamela Harper was able to turn a small, struggling gift shop into a successful producer of wholesale candles. After moving her business from Harrisburg to the Lewisburg area in 2005, Pam became a client of Bucknell Small Business Development to get help planning the expansion of Star Hollow Candle Company. With the help of the SBDC, Pam obtained the loans needed to purchase a building. She also used the SBDC Engineering services to set up a floor layout that would include her candle-manufacturing shop, gift shop, and her new café, Flickers Café.
It Started One Sleepless Night
BELLEFONTE – When Dr. Wei-Shin Lai had trouble falling back to sleep after a 3 a.m. call from the emergency room, she and her husband, Jason Wolfe, came up with the idea of headphones comfortable enough to sleep in. The result: SleepPhones®, fleece headbands with thin, built-in speakers. They made the first SleepPhones® at their kitchen table in Connecticut in 2007. Moving to Bellefonte later that year, Dr. Lai turned to the Penn State SBDC in 2008 for help running a business. Sales surpassed $1 million last year. The company, AcousticSheep, LLC, now also sells a sports version, RunPhones®. A wireless version, launched in April, was named a 2013 Design & Engineering Awards Honoree at the International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.

When There is No Other Answer but Divorce How to Sheild Your Children from Unnecessary Pain
You know that divorce is inevitable. It is only a matter of WHEN? After the children are past the age of 5? 8? 10? 14? You and your husband are trying to keep the family together, but the two of you are individually coming apart at the seams…. Divorce is usually painful for everyone involved. But how to shield your children from unnecessary pain – this is the question! If you are planning or have recently divorced, here are a few things to consider: 1. There’s Hope. Divorce itself has not been shown to cause longterm negative effects on children. It is the way that people handle the divorce which makes a difference. Most (about 80%) of children have basically adjusted to the divorce within one to two years after the initial separation. While feelings and issues remain, basic healing and stability usually occur. 2. Nobody’s perfect. People are not trained in how to get divorced or how to be a parent. We live in a changing world and there is no one right answer for what to do, such that many ways work and each situation is unique. 3. The level of conflict is usually the biggest problem. Research has shown that a high level of conflict between the parents is more disruptive to children’s development than whether their parents divorced. This research shows that a high-conflict marriage is harder on children than a lowconflict divorce. A high-conflict divorce is even worse. 4. Stability is a key factor for children of any age. To the extent possible, parents should try to keep or create routines that the children can count on. Children need consistency on which to base their growth. Therefore, firm rules, regular activities, special time with the child, etc. are very helpful. 5. Explain changes ahead of time, if possible. Children and adults adjust to change more easily if we can prepare first in our minds. No one likes surprises of the upsetting kind. 6. Make time to listen to your child Children need to process feelings and worries much like adults do. Listening with interest and without judgment is important. Avoid reacting to what the child says with your own issues or conclusions. 7. Avoid criticisms of the other parent in front of the child. This is easy to say and hard to do, but very important. Your child needs to have I read it in the Women’s Journal!
a relationship with the other parent and children do better when they are not caught in the middle. 8. Move slowly introducing children to your new relationships. Your child already has a lot to cope with. The more pressure to like someone new, the more negative their reaction. 9. Get adult support for yourself. While you want to inform the child of what is going on, don’t rely on the child for support. You need to talk, so find many people to talk to. 10. Do fun activities with your child. By enjoying time with your child, you will both feel better and be healthier for it. These suggestions won’t make all pain go away. They might just help make the decision to divorce manageable for you and your children. If you have more detailed questions or concerns, continue reading on the subject; ask for resources from your child’s school counselor or teacher; or seek the help of a trained EAP or mental health professional. You might be surprised at how much help you can get to give you direction and quiet your worries. Any questions? Call the Law Offices of Lance T. Call us at 814-949-7280 to discuss your options, or visit our newly “Rejuvenated” website for more information, www. BlairPlasticSurgery.com.
In considering plastic surgery, you may have noticed that cosmetic procedures are becoming increasingly popular. In 2011 alone, plastic surgeons performed over 13.8 million procedures. While in the past it may have been viewed as vanity, it is clear that the services plastic surgeons offer enhance more than their patients appearance. Physician experts and society alike now recognize that improving body image can enhance quality of life. It won't change your life or make you look like someone else, but it can boost self-confidence and add to your sense of well-being. Research shows that those who change their bodies by following diet and exercise regimens are happier and more confident. Plastic surgery works in the same way. So what motivates people to have cosmetic surgery? After more than 20 years helping Central Pennsylvanians achieve their selfimprovement goals, Dr. Robert Louton shares with us what his patients’ have told him is the reason for pursuing his services.
“I was tired of looking tired.” “After raising my family, now it’s time for me.” “I wanted my figure back.” “I want to look as young as I feel.” “Exercise didn’t give me the results I wanted.” “This summer is the summer I take my T-shirt off at the beach.” “My daughter (son) is getting married.” “I‘m done making excuses.” When seeking beautiful natural looking results, experience counts. An Eye Doctors First Hand Experience with Permanent Make-Up
As a healthcare professional, I always like to put my best face forward. Unfortunately, smudging eyeliner always made this difficult. I had considered permanent make-up for years and when I finally made the decision to do it my number one priority was finding the right technician. I originally heard about Secrets by Lorie through word of mouth. Being an eye doctor, I get to see patients with permanent make-up on a regular basis - this affords me the opportunity to speak with them about their experiences. It turns out that a lot of my patients were also Lorie’s clients and they couldn’t say enough good things about her or the procedure. When examining their eyes behind the microscope I couldn’t help but take notice of how precise Lorie’s application was – it truly looks just as flawless under magnification as it does to the naked eye. When I called Lorie’s office to inquire about an appointment and the procedure she did not know that I was an eye doctor. She took the time to explain the procedure in great detail and what to expect afterwards. She also mentioned that if I had any further concerns about my personal eye health that I should discuss that with my eye health professional prior to having the procedure done so I could be as comfortable as possible. Lorie applied my permanent eyeliner to my upper and lower eyelids and I couldn’t be happier. The only thing I wish I had done differently is that I would have had it done sooner. As an eye doctor, I get asked a lot about the safety of applying permanent make-up. My answer is simple: The procedure is safe, but only in the hands of a well-trained and skilled individual. Unfortunately, the field of permanent cosmetics isn’t as regulated as it should be. Please keep in mind, this procedure involves the use of needles. You need to ensure that the provider you choose is well educated about proper sterilization requirements and disposal of instruments. Their level of artistry is easily depicted in their “actual client” before and after photos. When searching for a technician look for individuals with advanced education, such as a master’s certification and

inquire about their years of experience as well as the number of procedures they have done. Many will offer the procedure but I suggest looking for one that specializes in it. You only get one set of eyes, so please be sure you are trusting them to an expert. Permanent make-up is a great option for many people. Not only do I recommend it for anyone looking to cut time off their morning routine, but it is also helpful for patients with certain health issues. Permanent make-up is a great benefit for people with chronic, watering eyes which can cause make-up to smudge and run. It is also helpful for patients with poor eyesight or poor dexterity which makes make-up application difficult. Now that I have had the procedure done I am even more excited to recommend it to my patients. After my personal experience with Lorie, I would only trust my patients to her. Her years of experience combined with her education and attention to detail truly make her an expert in her field. Dr. Abbey Bonnell is an optometrist at the Eye Center of Central PA. She completed her undergraduate work at Penn State University and completed her optometric education at Salus University in Elkins Park, PA. She currently works at the Eye Center’s Williamsport office as well as their new Bellefonte location. If you have any questions please feel free to contact Dr. Bonnell at abonnell@eyecenterofpa. com. Real Estate
Are You Ready? As spring approaches it is time to prepare for the coming year. In the world of real estate we are excited about what lies ahead. That optimism is based primarily on the trends we see developing and the momentum from what occurred in 2012. Those of you who have followed my writings in the past have heard me speak of improving housing conditions, and the numbers from 2012 serve to strengthen those statements. In Centre County the number of residential sales increased by more than 12% while the average days on market decreased by more than 3 weeks. The average sales price was basically flat, with slight fluctuations +/- for specific school districts. Surrounding areas also saw improving figures. * In 2013 the real estate market looks promising. Interest rates continue to be historically low and steps taken by the Federal Reserve Board look to counter any rapid rises in the near future. In fact, the housing market is being considered an important part of the strengthening economic picture. Banks are coming out from recent review processes with a renewed interest and ability to lend – to qualified buyers. Inventories are healthy and balanced. It looks like a good time for both buyers and sellers in the coming year. *data from the CCAR MLS
If you are satisfied with your current residence it is also a good time to consider making improvements, both inside and out, especially in regards to projects that will improve the efficiency and quality of your home. Projects that are aesthetic in nature rarely generate a full return on the investment financially, but they can provide a more appealing place to live. Projects that incorporate improved operating and value for your home are even better. Here the improving lending market makes such plans all the more reasonable to consider. As with all things, it is advisable to consult a professional before acting. Including a knowledgeable Realtor is obviously a step I would support. How to Talk to Your Parents About Their Finances By Judy Loy, ChFC®
easily accessible to heirs. This can mean not keeping it in a safety deposit box) • Bank accounts, Investment Accounts and Retirement Accounts – Where they are held, who to talk to and where statements are kept • Whether they pay for bills through automatic debit -- set up automatic bill-pay if they haven't already • Any safety deposit boxes • Whether they have to pay estimated taxes throughout the year • Where they keep the deed to their home • Where they keep their tax returns • Where they keep their insurance policies • Where they keep their stock or bond certificates (if they have paper certificates, it is highly advisable to deposit them to a trusted broker. Discussing finances with your aging parents is often a difficult task. Your parents may be resistant to share information or feel you are infringing on their privacy. Here are some tips to help you bridge the communication gap, get the conversations going and topics you may need to discuss. It is important to learn as much as you can about your parents’ finances, especially if you suspect they may be having difficulties with their monthly expenses. Some indications that they might be having trouble could include complaints about their income, their desire to continue working, especially if your parents are in their 70's, and comments they make about their expenses. To get the conversation started, you might want to ask them if you can help develop a spending plan. By looking at their expenses and income, you can get a better picture of how they are doing managing their monthly expenses and whether they are using any investments to help fund their retirement. In some cases, you might want to suggest that you set up automatic payments for recurring expenses so they won't need to write so many checks. Or, you may want to help them by paying their bills online.
Both you and your parents will have more peace of mind if everyone is on the same page when it comes to your parents’ finances. In a time of tragedy, it helps to be prepared and know the wishes of those not still with us.
Use stories to help convey financial information, such as letting them know what methods you use to help budget your money or what your advisors have told you about investments or planning for retirement income. When you are willing to share your information (“Hey mom, I just had my will prepared”), it can be a two-way conversation that can open up honest input. In many cases, you want to have a meeting with your parents and their investment advisor and/or accountant to review their entire situation.

What Are Your Retirement Plans? By: Samantha K. Wolfe, Esquire, LL.M. in Taxation
park him or herself next to the shuffleboard court?
My grandmother loves the beach, so usually every year my grandparents travel to the Outer Banks for a week during the summer months. There is always an open invitation for my family to come down and spend that week at the beach. The only problem—my dad hates the beach. For several years my entire family, including my dad, traveled to North Carolina with my grandparents. My dad was such a good sport. Oh sure, he complained incessantly about how hot it was, how crowded it was, or how, once again, he had sand in places he didn’t want, but he endured. When my sisters and I entered the teenage years, my dad decided he had had enough of the sand and that if we wanted to go to the beach with my grandparents we were old enough that he didn’t have to endure the horrors of the beach himself.
When I enter into discussions with clients about their shared plans for retirement, the financial aspect fades into the background. The financial side of retirement is the objective aspect of retirement planning. The subjective nature of retirement planning involves the goals, dreams, and desires of both spouses. There is no mathematical formula to help you calculate the correct answer. Instead, both spouses need to have an open dialogue and be willing to compromise a little, if needed. The most important thing to remember is this: It is always best to start your retirement years on the right foot and with the correct expectations. Make sure you know if your spouse expects you to be at the volleyball court at 8 a.m. or if you can sleep late and read a romance novel. Call Steinbacher & Stahl for a FREE Consultation to discuss your retirement planning.
One particular summer just my mom and I went to the beach with my grandparents, two aunts and uncles, and four cousins. It had been a few years since we had made the annual trip. Both my mom and I love to read, especially romance novels, so we packed a handful of books to read on the beach. My idea of a great vacation revolves around parking myself in a beach chair under an umbrella reading a great Nora Roberts book. The most important part of my vacation is that I don’t have a schedule. It is vital that I not be required to be at any location at a designated time. I want to wake up when I want, read when I want, and sleep when I want. Needless to say, my cousins had other ideas about what a vacation should include; it didn’t involve a beach chair, umbrella, or romance novel. They wanted to build sandcastles and play volleyball at the resort gym all on a specific timetable. They nagged me to be at the gym at a certain time or build my sandcastle a certain way. It was a long week.

Perhaps if my extended family and my mom and I had discussed what we planned to do while on vacation before we arrived at the beach, it would have saved me and my cousins some aggravation. At least I know I would have finished my Nora Roberts book; I am a much nicer person if I have the opportunity to read my romance novel.

Similar to the pre-vacation discussion, a pre-retirement discussion needs to occur when planning for retirement. It surprises me how often I meet with a married couple on the cusp of retirement who haven’t even discussed their retirement plans, and assuming that you want your partner to share in your glory years with you, it might be a good idea to make sure you both are on the same page. Look out for a tropical color scheme this year. Blues and greens will take the stage as consumers are looking for conservative tones tomatch their spending habits. Blue can be a surprisingly great neutral, along with many other relaxed tones with a few bold colors like Poppy Red and Lemon Zest. Black and white patterns are making an impact all their own. This season's shoe style is BOLD. Try something new like a patterned shoe, bright color, or twotoned. Keep the style mature by combining a fun color with a tasteful style. Rounded toes tend to give off more of a 'junior' look, so your best bet is a slightly pointed toe or something in between.

Spring Bloom When we last visited my client she had, in fact, survived the winter. The first hints of warm weather led to thoughts of a spring image. When she arrived for her color retouch appointment, the day was beautiful. “I love my hair and style, she told me. I just want something a little different for the spring.“ “Well, the fashion runways are showing fuller, slightly more structured hair designs,” I told her.
about how much fun she was having. “With the perm, I can do all sorts of new things for work, going out, or just running errands.” With a permanent wave and a color retouch my client was in full bloom for the Spring season.

As she left the salon that day, her fresh look blended in with the first blossoms of spring. In a nearby tree a bird was singing.
“That sounds exciting. How do we do it?” she asked. “We design from where you are and add a loose body wave.” “Are we talking about more work for me?” “Not really. Blow or air-dry your hair as you have been doing and finish off with a few large rollers. Complete your morning routine, pull out the rollers, and then run a pick through your hair. Hit it with a little spray and you’re done.”
day, November 3
We permed and trimmed her hair that day. While the sun gently warmed the cold ground, soft waves gently warmed her face. We rescheduled her color retouch for the following week so as not to damage her hair. When she returned for her color she went on

Wild for Native Plants
By Melody Aumiller of Fox Hill Gardens To see a world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower, Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour.
Versatility- There are natives of many types for every season and almost every growing condition, so you can plant your entire yard with them, or choose a few beauties to tuck in here and there. • Trees and shrubs of varying heights, either evergreen or deciduous, including those that flower beautifully or have interesting bark, colorful new growth, distinctive fall leaves, or bright berries. • Spring ephemerals – Diminutive plants that grow for a brief time, flower, reproduce and die back when the heat of summer comes. • Perennials for sun and shade, groundcovers and ferns. Support Local Ecology- Although much natural habitat has been lost to development, planting landscapes full of native plants provide bridges to remaining wild lands nearby, creating a corridor for bird and Monarch migration and allowing increased genetic diversity in the populations of plants and animals. A direct benefit to people is that many birds and beneficial insects, attracted by native plants in the garden, help control mosquitoes and other pests. Native insect pollinators not only enjoy visiting native plant flowers, but also improve the fruit set and productivity of your garden. One of the greatest benefits of growing native plants is the opportunity to take time to delight in the subtle beauty of these age-old Pennsylvania denizens. The same types of plants were here when Native Americans first populated North America (and long before), and they knew and understood their uses as food and medicine. In your reverie, you may imagine the soft rustle of a branch brushed by buckskin fringe or moccasin, and the timeless image of slender little fingers picking a flower, holding the treasure up to show a smiling mother. As you gaze at a blossom with similar wonder, you’ll escape from the modern world and find simplicity, tranquility, and your own connection to earth and its history. As in William Blake’s poem, when we immerse ourselves in nature and see with the fresh eyes of a child, we can indeed find heaven in a wildflower.
~William Blake - Auguries of Innocence
If you’ve seen a child picking flowers, fascinated by every petal, you know the sense of awe William Blake was describing in his poem “Augeries of Innocence”. But was it a wildflower, or a weed? It all depends upon your point of view. The term wildflower evokes meadows of wind-blown blossoms of rainbow hue, or delicate drifts of Trillium flowers in a mossy, misty grove. The term weed makes one think of something prickly or unpleasant. These two words have very different connotations, but may refer to the same plant. The key difference is whether a human appreciates where it’s growing. In the quest for a monochrome sheet of green lawn, Americans have tried to eradicate all ‘weeds’ in their immediate surroundings, using tremendous resources to keep this artificial and sterile construct at it’s peak appearance: lawn equipment, oil and gas, fertilizer, herbicides, insecticides, water, time and money. In their gardens, in place of native wild plants that have grown here since the inland seas subsided, there are non-native trees, shrubs and perennials. While attractive, they can demand extra attention and care if not well chosen, and offer little benefit to the local ecosystem. Some can become invasive, choking out natives and robbing local wildlife of the habitat they need to survive. Native plants were unappreciated by most North American gardeners…until now. They are increasingly popular choices for landscaping for a variety of reasons, and every gardener should take to heart the advantages of including native plants in their landscape. Attract Wildlife- Many creatures have coevolved with local plant life, and together they form an interdependent web. Songbirds, hummingbirds, butterflies and other wildlife will prefer your garden to your neighbors’ if the instinctively familiar sights, scents and tastes of native plants are there to attract them. They’ll know they can find essentials they need to thrive: shelter, nesting sites and materials, seeds, berries and nectar. In return for your kindness, you’ll enjoy the presence of wild creatures in every season. Sustainable Maintenance- Since native plants have evolved with local climate, soil types, pests and diseases, they are already suited to our local growing conditions and can take almost any challenge Mother Nature throws at them if situated in a location similar to where they would grow in the wild. This results in healthy, hardy plants with little need of time and attention- from pruning to fertilizing- on the part of the gardener. This includes less watering, since established plants often need little irrigation beyond normal rainfall during average seasonal conditions, saving money on the city water bill.
Fox Hill Gardens is a local full service nursery and landscaping business. We specialize in responsibly grown native and wildlife plants, as well as a wide variety of other healthy and beautiful selections: unusual evergreens, Japanese maples, trees, shrubs and perennials, as well as seasonal annuals, hanging baskets, vegetables, herbs, fruiting plants and fruit trees. We officially open Saturday March 30, and will be at the nursery from mid-March preparing for the season. To contact us before March 30 to place special orders, request a consultation or design, or for any reason, please call or e-mail. Our friendly and expert staff looks forward to assisting you!

Health
Communication is a Two-Way Street Communicating with someone with hearing loss can be stressful and exhausting. Trying to communicate with other people when you have hearing loss can also be stressful and exhausting. Here are six key communication strategies that are effective and easy to implement.
rather than not hearing. A listener typically will say “what” or “huh” when they don’t catch the entire conversation. They should rephrase the part of the conversation that they did catch. For example, “What did you say about dinner Saturday evening?” rather than, “What?”. This clues the speaker in on what the listener missed.
1. Get attention first. You can improve speech understanding by getting a person’s attention first. This is useful for anyone, but especially for someone with hearing loss.
Contact your local Audiologist and schedule your appointment.
2. Walk before you talk. It is beneficial to be in the same room and facing the listener. This decreases the distance between the speaker and listener and allows the person with hearing loss to take advantage of visual cues.
Williamsport Hearing Services The Hearing Experts
3. Speak slowly. Slow your rate of speech when speaking to someone with hearing loss. This improves comprehension and recall.
Dr. Sandra Chamberlin, Au.D., CCC-A is an ASHA certified PA state licensed audiologist with over 19 years of experience. Education: B.S. Marywood College, 1989, M.S. Vanderbilt University,1991, Au.D. Pennsylvania College of Optometry, 2007
4. Give the topic. When listeners know the topic of conversation before the talker begins speaking, speech understanding is improved. Listeners are better able to fill in the gaps or words that they may have missed.
1215 West Southern Avenue South Williamsport, PA 17702 | 570.323.7000
5. Rephrase. When a listener misunderstands, a speaker typically just repeats the same message. It is preferred that the speaker rephrase the message by changing the word order or using different words.
www.williamsporthearing.com
6. Use keywords. Not understanding may occur due to poor clarity

THE 7 AWESOME WEBSITES WE LOVE... 1. Grooveshark.com
2. Dropbox.com
Grooveshark lets you listen to streaming music online. Unlike Pandora, Grooveshark lets you choose the specific songs you want, organize them in playlists, and play them uninterrupted to your hearts content, all while sparing you those annoying audio ads between songs. You even can save your playlists and listen to them later.
Dropbox is a really cool way to share files and collaborate. Anybody can go to the site and create a dropbox. The box is like a file folder on your computer, only when you put files in it, the files are stored online. By sharing the folder with your friends, they get access to the same folder on their computer.
4. Mint.com Mint is a free, secure, web-based, personal finance website. It helps you keep track of your money but it is much more intuitive than your bank's clunky website. The coolest thing it does is that it brings all your accounts together, across multiple banks and brokerages so you can see all your financial information in one location. You can also track your checking transactions, build a budget that alerts you when you're about to go over, and see recommendations for ways to save money.
5. Ted.com This is a really impressive site. TED is a video archive of talks by thought leaders in Technology, Entertainment, Design, Business, Global Issues, Education, and other industries. If you want to hear about cutting edge research, impressive technology, and movements that are aimed to change the world, then wander around ted.com for a few minutes. With consistently impressive talks, high profile speakers, and polished presentations, you'll be surprised that you don't have to pay for access to such good content.
3. Supercook.com This cooking website pulls off a really neat concept: Finding recipes for you based on what you have in the pantry. You just start building a list of ingredients you have, and the site automatically gathers recipes you can make with those ingredients. It really is that easy.
6. Yousendit.com This site is for anyone who tried to email that 8 minute movie to aunt Sally, only to have the email rejected because the file size was too large. Yousendit is a free service that lets you send files up to 100 MB in size. Problem solved .
7. Thewomensjournals.biz
Okay so maybe we’re a little biased, but our website rules! You can access your favorite educational newspaper for women anytime and anywhere. Do You Know An Individual Who... Supports Women In Achieving Their Full Leadership Potential, Improves The Quality Of Life For Others In Their Community, And Demonstrates Excellence in Their Profession? The ATHENA AWARD is an international women’s leadership award presented annually to an individual from a specific community or area. Nominations are solicited throughout the community and across professional sectors. An ATHENA sculpture is awarded to an exemplary leader, most often a woman, who meets certain criteria.
ATHENA Leadership Award Nominees give back to our community in profoundly meaningful ways and make it a better place to live, work and lead. Honoring them fosters an atmosphere of inclusion where all are invited to celebrate, cultivate relationships, and discover their own personal brand of leadership.
The ATHENA Award actively supports ATHENA International’s mission to support, develop, and honor women leaders, and is reflective of a quote attributed to Plato, “What is honored in a country will be cultivated there.”
This prestigious award is presented to someone who represents and has achieved all of the following criteria: • Actively assist women in achieving their full leadership potential • Provide valuable service to improve the quality of life for others in their community • Demonstrate excellence, creativity, and initiative in their business, profession or philanthropic volunteering
Since the program’s inception in 1982, over 6,200 individuals have received the prestigious ATHENA Award in over 500 communities around the globe. This award has also been established in Ohio and other areas of Pennsylvannia. Its focus on the mentorship of women is what sets the ATHENA Award apart from other leadership awards of its kind.
The recipient of the award is presented the ATHENA Sculpture, created by sculptor Linda Ackley. The dynamic goddess of Greek mythology known for her strength, courage, wisdom, and enlightenment inspired the award—all qualities needed for great leadership.
On September 19, 2013, The Women’s Journal will present the prestigious ATHENA Leadership Award® to an exemplary leader from our community at the inaugural year of this award ceremony in Centre County. In its sixth year of print, the mission of The Women’s Journal is to Educate, Energize and Empower Women Through Knowledge. Our organizations have such a similar mission that it was a natural for us to bring the ATHENA Awards to Centre County to acknowledge these remarkable women leaders.
Nominations are now being accepted for the ATHENA Leadership Award®, which will be presented on September 19, 2013 at Toftrees Resort in State College to an exemplary leader who has achieved excellence in their business or profession, served the community in a meaningful way, and, most importantly, actively assisted women to achieve their full leadership potential. Please visit www.TheWomensJournals.biz for more information. If interested in sponsorship or involvement please contact, Tere Rill at TereRillPawj@yahoo.com

Understanding the Causes of and Treatment for Eating Disorder
An increasing number of men and women struggle with the devastating effects of eating disorders. According to the National Eating Disorder Association, approximately 30 million Americans suffer from anorexia, bingeeating disorder, bulimia, or unspecified eating disorders. Nevertheless, despite this high prevalence, many people still have difficulty understanding the causes of and treatment for eating disorders. Generally speaking, eating disorders are not characterized by weight but rather by extreme behaviors. Dieting, binge-eating, intentional vomiting, laxative abuse, and extreme exercise all characterize various eating disorders. These behaviors typically function as unhealthy coping mechanisms that help individuals express their emotions and/or feel more control over their bodies and lives. As such, other struggles almost always accompany eating disorders, including posttraumatic stress disorder, substance abuse, depression, suicidality, self-harm, and anxiety. The frequency of co-occurring disorders makes each eating disorder unique. When treating an eating disorder, clinicians must not only address clients’ eating behaviors but they must also incorporate therapies to address the underlying causes of the disorder. Therefore, small facilities with high staff-to-client ratios have the best outcomes in eating disorder treatment. One such facility, Magnolia Creek Treatment Center for Eating Disorders, offers highly individualized treatment in a serene, home-like environment. Their experienced medical, therapeutic, and nutritional staff is well-equipped to treat both eating disorders and the struggles that often accompany them. Magnolia Creek’s residential and partial hospitalization programs offer highly individualized treatment in a serene, home-like environment where women can begin to regain hope, restore their health, and ultimately recover their lives.
If you or someone you know is suffering from an eating disorder, or if you would like more information about eating disorders and eating disorder treatment, you can contact Magnolia Creek at 1-888-494-4213 or visit them online at www.magnolia-creek.com.

The fire company is raising $100,000 to purchase their own underwater camera, which they can also lend to other state rescue operations.
Three benevolent groups of central PA women meet four times a year. Each woman is interested in making a difference in her community. They come from all walks of life and varying financial backgrounds but they have one thing in common – a heart of gold. As individuals they want to make a meaningful impact but understand that when they get together and join forces that impact is HUGE. This is their way to contribute to local non-profits as a group. Every three months, they meet and a number of worthy charities are presented. One is chosen by the group to receive their individual donations.

Rae’s Sunday Sweet
Rae’s Raisin Cake

ating “out” is a longtime tradition for the Café on the Park family; a tradition that I’ve traced back to my grandmother, Elizabeth “Rae” Brennan Alexander. She always loved to dress up and eat out. In the 1930s, when her family had big dreams but little money, Rae made Sunday dinner a dress-up affair, including a favorite hat and white gloves, and, weather permitting, she served the meal at a table under their farm’s pear tree. As a farmer’s wife, she cooked seasonally, with a menu based on what the family raised: dairy cattle, pigs, chickens, vegetables and fruit. So it’s not surprising that the Sunday meal featured roast chicken (fresh from the yard), sweet potatoes (from the root cellar), homemade bread, and, often, raisin cake. The latter was one of her specialties — a dense, rich, moist, sweet cake that needed no icing. In her world, food expressed love, and breaking bread together as a family meant sharing love. May you share the same spirit with your family. And don’t forget the hat and gloves!

Spring into a Green Lawn
By Anne Lieb, Landscape Consultant
can be controlled in the spring before they germinate and take over your lawn later in the summer. Once the weed is identified, then the proper treatment can be made. Mid-summer is a good time to treat any grubs in the lawn. These pesky insects eat the roots of your lawn killing areas of the lawn and then as white grubs mature they turn into the infamous Japanese beetles that eat your plants. So, let’s treat them as a small insect before they create other issues in the landscape. As the fall goes on, the grass leaves start to slow down in the growth, but the roots will continue to grow. Fertilizing this time of year strengthens the roots system of the lawn creating a lawn that will green up in the spring and be an overall healthier plant. Weeds can also be pretreated in planting beds and in the joints between pavers in walkways, driveways and patios. The pretreatments can be applied as a spray or a granular product that lasts an average of 60 days. Less weeding, that is something we can all enjoy.
A lush green lawn not only provides curb appeal, but it gives you a comfortable area to relax with family and friends while giving the kids & your family pets a place to play. To achieve this type of lawn, regular care will go a long way. A proper fertilization program provides the necessary nutrients for the lawn to thrive from creating strong roots to creating healthy green leaves. A strong root system helps create a more drought tolerant, disease tolerant plant that will grow and fill in the lawn leaving fewer areas for weeds to grow. Moon Brothers Landscaping follows a fertilization and weed control program from the spring through the fall to achieve different benefits throughout the year. It’s important to understand how grass grows and when insects/weeds are active to treat them most effectively. Timing applications correctly will provide good results with fewer applications. At Moon Brothers, the treatments are completed by a certified applicator who receives regular training for safe and proper use of our products. A great way to start your lawn fertilization program is to have a soil test done. This test will analyze the existing levels of nutrients and pH of your soil and a program can be developed based on these results. This allows the customized fertilization program to provide the needed nutrients without over-fertilizing. Although a thick lawn is the best weed control, there will be times when treating weeds & insects will need to be done. Some weeds, like crabgrass, I read it in the Women’s Journal!
