An anthropologist proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that whoever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run…. They all took hands and ran together, and then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run together rather than one reaching the goal first so that the winner could enjoy all the fruits for himself.

Health
You Have Breast Cancer! Unfortunately, one out of eight women will get the stark news sometime during their life that they have breast cancer. It may be discovered as a lump they find while showering or as a shadow on their screening mammogram. No matter how it is found it is a message that brings about a visceral response which is life altering. Is it really? In a way it is life altering because once a woman has this diagnosis, there is always that haunting question in the back of their mind after therapy; did they get it all? The media always talks about breast cancer survivors as if they have been lost at sea on a small raft surrounded by sharks. But if you look at the numbers, this isn’t quite so. Thankfully, because of mammograms and increased awareness we now find 60% of breast cancers when they are still confined to the breast. In this state limited to the breast, the 5 year survival is 98.4%. In comparison, a patient with congestive heart failure has a 5 year survival of only 25%. Patients with alcoholic cirrhosis have 5 year survival rates of 66% in mild cases and only 25% in more advanced cases. So the majority of breast cancer patients fair much better than these other common ailments. Even if the breast cancer has spread to the lymph nodes which accounts for 33% of breast cancer patients, the 5 year survival is still 84% which is far better than the mildest case of cirrhosis. Finally, patients with metastatic breast cancer at the time of presentation, which is only 5% of the cases, have a 25% five year survival which is just as good as patients with congestive heart failure and the worst cases of cirrhosis. Hopefully, these numbers put breast cancer concerns into a little better perspective. For the vast majority of women who get this diagnosis, it is not a death sentence. Also, it is not a mutilating diagnosis as it has been in the past. Since today we catch most cases early, the vast majority of patients can have breast conservation with great cosmetic outcomes if they go to an experienced surgeon. Radical approaches which take out large sections of tissue do not equate to survival. A systematic approach based on experience and knowledge of the science behind the behavior of breast cancers is best. Accuracy and planning are what is important so patients should be directed to a surgeon with a good reputation for this particular disease. When in doubt, have your doctor ask a local radiation therapist who actually sees many examples of the surgeons’ skill, who they would recommend. Finally, going to an ivory tower does not necessarily equate to good care. You may be seen by a surgeon who has written some journal articles but that doesn’t always equate to skill in the operating room. In closing, the best advice is to get your annual mammograms and perform self breast exams so if you do end up with a breast cancer, it will be early. Finally, if you ever are faced with this pronouncement of breast cancer, take a deep breath and remember the odds are in your favor. Then do your homework to find the most experienced breast surgeon in your area. Your well being will depend upon it. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Career Fair brings together students, residents and employers May 17 By Geoff Rushlau
Pennsylvania’s improving job market is reflected in its unemployment rate, now 8.2 percent in central Pennsylvania as a whole and 5.9 percent in Centre County, as more companies ramp up hiring.
Here are some tips to prepare for the Career Fair: • Research the companies ahead of time. Visit the Career Fair website at http://careerfairs.psu.edu/CentralPA regularly to review the list of participating employers in the “Job Seekers” section, which will be updated daily. • It is important to be sure about the position you are looking for. Know what your skill set is and tailor your résumé to highlight the characteristics for that job.
Central Pennsylvania residents who want to learn about job opportunities in this region are invited to attend the sixth annual Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair from 2 to 5 p.m., Friday, May 17, at The Penn Stater Conference Center Hotel in Penn State student Alan Carothers has made Innovation Times New Roman FontPark. a list of employers he wants to talk with Use at the
• Bring multiple copies of your résumé and come dressed as if you are showing up for a professional interview. • Have a brief introduction prepared and rehearsed. • Follow up with the company representatives you speak to and send thank you notes. Penn State adult learner Alan Carothers plans to follow these tips. In 2010, Carothers was a sales representative in an expansion territory for a regional foodservice distributor to restaurants—a line of work he had been in for 12 years, until the economy took a downturn, and he was laid off. After discussing with his wife, Trish, how to advance his career, he decided to continue his education part time through Penn State’s World Campus while working full time for Wegmans. Carothers is set to graduate in August with a master’s degree in supply chain management. He previously attended another Penn State career fair, which helped him to prepare for the May 17 event.
Central Pennsylvania Regional Career Fair.
“This venue developed out of the desire to help current Penn State students and adult learners who want to live and work in the area, bringing talented professionals together with reputable, solid local employers who offer good job opportunities,” said Penn State Career Counselor Liz Lasher, Ph.D., LPC. Penn State Career Services is partnering with Penn State Continuing Education, Centre County Chamber of Business and Industry, Community Diversity Group and Pennsylvania Army National Guard to host this free event for central Pennsylvania employers and jobseekers.
“There were a lot of companies I was completely unfamiliar with, so now I’ve made a list of employers to talk to. I’m looking forward to getting face-time with representatives from companies I’m interested in and establishing specific contacts,” said Carothers.
A new military resource center will allow attendees to speak with military personnel about different individual and family benefits that service members are eligible to receive. Penn State admissions counselors who specialize in working with military students will also be there to answer questions.
Central Pennsylvania residents who are thinking about returning to school through Penn State Continuing Education or online through the World Campus can explore their areas of interest, career goals and educational options with Dr. Lasher by calling 814-867-2137 for an appointment.
To learn more about the Career Fair, watch a video at http://tinyurl.com/CareerFair-stand-out-and-shine. The Career Fair attracts employers who are looking for new employees with a variety of education levels and skill sets. The number of companies planning to attend this year’s fair is greater than last year. There will be representation across all areas, industries and occupational groups, including education, engineering, financial services, government, health care, human services, manufacturing, management, marketing, research and development, sales, science, technology and telecommunications.
“Resources for jobseekers and employers are available on the Career Fair website, including tips on how to make the most of your day and a special section for military personnel about translating their experience into more marketable civilian terms on their résumé,” Dr. Lasher said. Thinking of Removing that Tattoo
Lorie’s Beauty Salon has been in business for 12 years and offers tattoo removal and permanent make-up. Lorie is certified in EliminINK Tattoo Removal, Society of Permanent Cosmetic Professionals, and Micro-Pigmentation Centre Certified Professional. Also ask about corrective cosmetic tattooing and camouflaging. These areas include areola and nipples, vitiligo, scars resulting from burns and plastic surgery hair line face lift scars. She has added these two new services to her already successful Salon.
That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?
EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos, such as permanent makeup corrections, unwanted name, gang related tattoos, tattoo markings for radiation, tattoo redesign, or impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

After Breast Surgery Natural-looking Option
Areola repigmentation is an elective procedure that is the final step for many in breast reconstruction. Once medical treatments have been completed, the option is worth consideration. This procedure requires two sessions thirty days apart. We are able to closely match the areola of a single mastectomy or able to create areolas when a double mastectomy is necessary. Today many women choose to have nipple/areola tattooing because it is less invasive than tissue grafting, heals quickly and looks most natural I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Wagner Serves as Lewisburg Mayor for More than a Decade
LEWSIBURG – Judy Wagner enjoys public service. After retiring from a rewarding careet as a school counselor in the Lewisburg School system, Wagner won her bid for mayor in 2002. More than 10 years later, she couldn't be happier. “It's been a great journey so far, a marvelous opportunity to change the way the mayor's office can serve the community,” she said. Wagner has gotten more involved in the safety, business, preservation, and expansion of the town and is one of its biggest fans. “We have so much to enjoy in the borough, always something for people to come and do – the arts festival, Victorian Parade, the Ice Festival. It's a joy to be here.”

Beauty
Saturday Afternoons Saturday afternoons in the early 60’s. My oldest sister (midteens) comes downstairs, - a prima donna. I can see her now; cats eye glasses, cap- sleeved top, pedal-pushers, and white canvas shoes. Her hair is encased in not-of-nature colored goop. This scene was often repeated weekly. She became every color imaginable, and sometimes, colors unimaginable! The unimaginable colors were followed by frantic visits to the drug store for more chemicals.
I love creating a sought after color change for a client. But I also have a deep abiding respect for the chemicals I use to create just the right color for each individual. So I partially credit my many years as a successful colorist to my dear sister. When formulating a color for a client, I can still see her running out the door, head wrapped in a scarf. I don’t want to see my clients running out the door with some unimaginable color, any more than I want to see them in cats eye glasses.
Years later I found myself a student, standing in the chemical dispensary of Beauty school. Faced with shelves full of color bottles brought both anticipation and fear. I knew the wonderful range of possibilities they represented. And thanks to my sister, I also knew the potential for disaster. I couldn’t allow myself to picture my sister’s unimaginable colors on a client because of me. That thought would have ended Beauty school before ever mixing my first color formula!

Want that Glow on your Wedding Day?
Here are some Dos and Don’ts: DO • Prepare your skin in advance with facials – but avoid any treatments within two weeks of your wedding day. • Consult an aesthetician to create a plan for getting your skin on track based on your specific goals and skin type. • Maintain your health! Beauty comes from the inside out so get adequate sleep, exercise, eat a balanced diet, and watch your stress levels. DON’T • Visit tanning beds! They prematurely damage and age your skin, leaving you with a muddy appearance that doesn’t photograph well. If you want some color on your wedding day, consider self-tanners and bronzers that offer more control. • Experiment with new products close to your wedding day – including detergents, shampoos, makeup – especially if you have sensitive skin to avoid rashes and reactions to ingredients.

Physical TheraPy BenefiTs BreasT cancer PaTienTs and survivors Breast cancer patients and survivors deal with many side effects from their treatments, including deconditioning, peripheral neuropathy, pain, fatigue, weakness, range of motion issues, loss of balance, lymphedema, difficulty swallowing or chewing, cognition issues and overall decreased function that impacts their quality of life. Oncology rehabilitation, a specialty field that includes physical, occupational and speech therapies for cancer patients, can help improve the patient’s functionality and quality of life. This is true for cancer care in general, not just breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about your specific situation. Specific to breast cancer rehabilitation, our physical therapists have special
training in lymphedema management. Lymphedema is swelling that can happen in the arm, breast, armpit or back as a result of breast cancer surgery and treatment. This can be painful and can impact your range of motion significantly. This problem could occur immediately or many years after surgery. Susquehanna Health’s Rehabilitation Services offers various treatments and techniques that can control these side effects. Pain management services are also available to help with a range of breast cancer treatment side effects. A proactive approach, with early interventions, is key to helping cancer patients and survivors maximize their quality of life. With a doctor’s referral,

undersTanding irriTaBle Bowel syndrome By Dr. Vivek Kumar, Susquehanna Health Digestive Disease Center Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a digestive condition that affects nearly 15 percent of adults in the United States and Europe. It is the second leading cause of work absenteeism after the common cold. While there are currently no curative treatments for the chronic condition, it can be effectively managed with medication, dietary changes or a combination of both. When IBS is not managed well symptoms can interfere with your ability to work, spend quality time with family and friends and participate in events away from home. The most common symptoms of IBS are abdominal pain with either diarrhea, constipation or both. These symptoms would appear at least three days per month for a continuous period of at least three months for

a diagnosis of IBS. As part of your evaluation, your physician will also take a comprehensive medical history and conduct a physical exam. Often the diagnosis of IBS involves ruling out other more serious conditions that share similar symptoms such as Crohn’s Disease, ulcerative colitis, celiac disease or colon cancer. These conditions, which require different treatments, often have “alarm” symptoms such as bloody stools, weight loss or more severe and worsening pain which are not symptoms of IBS. To rule out these conditions, imaging, colonoscopy or blood tests may be ordered. The key to managing IBS is a good physician/patient relationship. Many patients are reluctant to discuss their bowel movements and related issues,
but being open can be helpful in determining what triggers your IBS events so they can be minimized and managed. Your doctor can prescribe or recommend medications that will address your specific complaints. A food journal, which includes the type and severity of your related symptoms, can also assist you and your doctor with determining what foods to avoid and what medications may help. At Susquehanna Health’s Digestive Disease Center, our specialists provide advanced care for the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of gastrointestinal and liver diseases and conditions, including irritable bowel syndrome. What Do Young People Need?
It is surprising to most people in our area that heroin is a drug of choice for so many young people in Central Pennsylvania. Heroin is no longer just an inner city problem or of low income populations. Heroin is cheaper and more readily available than prescription pills which is why it can eventually become the drug of choice for young opiate addicts. We are located between two major providers of heroin, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia. For a young addict, a drive to either of those places is not too far a distance to go to get their fix. Despite the recent break up of a heroin ring in Centre County and a rather large bust on I-80 in Monroe County, heroin is still found much closer to home. It may be very surprising to know that there are adolescents in our local high schools who are addicted to heroin. There are college students and young people who are employed in full-time jobs who present for heroin addiction on a regular basis. Addiction to heroin is not different than addiction to alcohol (alcoholism); it is simply a different drug of choice. Whatever the drug of choice, these young adults sometimes ask for help themselves or their families intervene and force them into treatment. What do these young people need to get clean and sober? They need boundaries and consequences.
They need love, acceptance and understanding that they are struggling with a legitimate disease not a lack of willpower or moral failure. They do not need judgment and condemnation. They do not need a parent asking how they could embarrass the family in this way. They need a minimum of 30 days of inpatient treatment followed by a 6 - 8 week program of Intensive Outpatient treatment. Intensive Outpatient consists of four sessions per week with one of the four sessions including the family members of the addict. The family needs to be involved in the young person’s treatment from inpatient throughout their Intensive Outpatient program (IOP). Once a person has successfully completed IOP, they are stepped down to Outpatient treatment which consists of one group session per week and one individual session per week. The family can continue to be involved with regular family sessions. Rehab After Work and Rehab After School provides IOP, Outpatient, Individual, and family treatment for addicts and alcoholics. Our Centre County office is conveniently located in State College and other offices are located in eastern Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Florida. The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill - It’s out of this world! As the owner and physical therapist at Action Therapy Clinic in State College, PA I am asked many questions about our anti-gravity treadmill. This amazing piece of equipment is an excellent rehabilitation tool for many types of patients. The most frequently asked question is... How does it work? The AlterG utilizes technology developed by NASA called differential air pressure to comfortably unweight the body so that walking, running and exercises can be performed at a decreased load. The patient enters the treadmill and a bubble-type chamber inflates up to the hips. Body weight is calibrated. In precise 1% increments weight bearing is reduced, taking up to 80% of the load off the lower body. The AlterG allows for normal gait mechanics and muscle firing , unlike some other systems that utilize harnesses or water. What can the Alter-G be used for? Post -op patients can rehabilitate from surgery with less pain and progress more quickly back to function. Because of the bubble-type chamber of air, the elderly population can exercise in the AlterG without fear of falling, making it a great tool for stroke patients, Parkinson’s patients and other neurologically compromised people. Athletes with strains, sprains or stress fractures
Are you a first-time buyer looking for an affordable home to own in State College Borough?
can maintain and improve their training while recovering from injury. By unweighting the lower body , overweight patients can feel what it is like to exercise at their target weight and save some pressure on their joints. FDAcleared uses of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill include: Rehabilitation following injury or surgery of the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, foot); Rehabilitation after total joint replacement; Gait training in neurologic patients; Strengthening and conditioning in older patients; Sportspecific conditioning programs; Aerobic conditioning The AlterG is a chosen tool of leading physical therapy clinics, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, colleges and pro sports teams. Action Therapy Clinic is one of only a few physical therapy clinics in Pennsylvania currently offering this advanced technology for rehabilitative care. How can I utilize the Alter-G? Action Therapy Clinic is located at 620 West Cherry Lane in State College, PA 16803. Call us at 814.238.8800 to schedule an evaluation. We participate with most health insurance plans and because we are a direct access provider, you do not need a physician referral to make an appointment. “Don’t Worry – Be Happy By: Karen Teichman, Practice Manager
8. Ask their name and use it often. Then ask for what you need, kindly. “Steve, I know you can help me, and I am so grateful. Can you please...
National Women’s Health and National Mental Health Month are both recognized in May. Here at Central Penn Women’s Health, we are aware of these two particular topics coming together. Most of the women we know are caregivers for their immediate and extended family and friends. They certainly have their share of everyday things to deal with.
Personalized H C
9. Use “I statements, instead of using blameful language. “When you treat me that way, I feel... Avoid “you statements, such as “You did this or that... 10. If the above techniques are not effective, firmly say, “This is inappropriate. To whom shall I speak to register a complaint?
“Mental Health Headlinesâ€? reports that “Wellness - it's essential to living a full and productive life. It's about keeping healthy as well as getting healthy.â€? The words “keeping and getting healthyâ€? deal with your physical and emotional well being; dealing with everyday stress falls right into this subject matter. I don’t know about you but I’ve noticed that there are more people in a big hurry these days --- and people in a hurry don’t take the time to be nice. Actually, you could say they are just plain mean! Have you ever used your precious 30 minute lunch break to run to the store only to have a person cut in line‌ or run a red light‌ or even get berated by the clerk because they are having a bad day? Some people can worsen your already stressful day, if you let them. As caregivers, we interact with a huge variety of people. Most of them are supportive and compassionate. Yet sometimes, too often on our toughest days, we encounter people who are just the opposite.
Ten Tips for Managing Mean (or Difficult) People
Thanks to Johnson & Johnson for supplying these ten tips. With these tools in your pocket, maybe we can all learn to smile and say “Have a good day! and then next month, give some of our best tips to our male friends who will recognize National Men’s Health Month. And if all else fails, listen to the words of Bobby McFerrin in his great song, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy! #07(?LOGO? #? NAMES PDF 0-

Does Your Dental Insurance Only
Give You $1000.00 a Year to Use?
Nicole Carnicella DMD, MAGD
Dental Insurance has not kept up with inflation. When dental insurance was implemented as a medical insurance rider in 1952, guess what, the allowance was $1000.00. With inflation, you should be entitled to $15,000.00 a year. Until employees/patients take a stand with their HR departments and force those HR representatives to stand up to insurance companies, things won’t change.

On a $100.00 filling, when we participate we have to accept $80.00, so we are down $20.00. Then we have a 70% overhead for cost of materials, staffing, and building expenses. So we are down to a $24.00 profit. Now the government takes almost 60% of that, so we are down to a $10.00 profit. In the U.S., Mothers’ Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. The first observance was in Philadelphia, Pa. in 1907 based on suggestions by Julia Ward Howe in 1872 and Anna Jarvis in 1907. In 1908, Ana Jarvis, from Grafton, West Virginia, began a campaign to establish a national Mother’s Day. Jarvis persuaded her mother’s church in Grafton to celebrate Mother’s Day on the anniversary of her mother’s death and then in Philadelphia when Jarvis moved there. Jarvis and others began a letter-writing campaign to ministers, businessmen, and politicians to establish a national Mother’s Day. They were successful. In 1914, President Woodrow Wilson officially proclaimed Mother’s Day a national observance to be held each year on the second Sunday of May. Happy Mother’s Day to You!
Things Our Mother’s Taught Us:
What Would Your Mother Say....
• APPRECIATE A JOB WELL DONE . “If you’re going to kill each other, do it outside. I just finished cleaning.”
When I was 18 months old my family escaped from Communist Hungary. My mother, who was pregnant with my little sister at the time, packed a small suitcase of food and photographs and walked out of her home with my father and I. We hid for 10 days and then crossed the border by way of a vast muddy field, and the river that marked it, she in a pair of loafers in the freezing November rain. She knew that it would be a long time, if ever, before she might see her parents, sisters, or friends again.
• RELIGION. “You better pray that will come out of the carpet.” • LOGIC. “Because, I said so, that’s why.” • MORE LOGIC. “If you fall out of that swing and break your neck, you’re not going to the store with me.” • FORESIGHT. “Make sure you wear clean underwear, in case you’re in an accident.” • IRONY. “Keep crying and I’ll give you something to cry about.”
But she followed my father, who had a dream...that his children grow up in America, the promised land, where he could speak without fear and travel about freely.
• STAMINA. “You’ll sit there until all that spinach is gone.” • WEATHER. “This room of yours looks as if a tornado went through it.”
As you might imagine, times were very difficult, but what I remember most about my mother through it all was her laughter and her ability to have fun whatever our circumstances. She was famous in our circle as a charming hostess and fabulous cook. She found joy in the small things and strength in her faith.
• HYPOCRISY. “If I told you once, I’ve told you a million times. Don’t exaggerate!” • CIRCLE OF LIFE. “I brought you into this world, and I can take you out” • ENVY. “There are millions of less fortunate children in this world who don’t have wonderful parents like you do.”
There were two tenets she lived by: never look back and never do anything you would regret. She always did her best, with a smile on her face and joy in her heart. She now faces her 9th decade with the same grace and aplomb of her younger years. I have tried to emulate all that my mom has modeled for me my entire life. I am so fortunate to have this truly loving and generous woman as my mother.
• ANTICIPATION. “Just wait until we get home.” • MEDICAL SCIENCE. “If you don’t stop crossing your eyes, they are going to get stuck that way.” • HOW TO BECOME AN ADULT. “If you don’t eat your vegetables, you’ll never grow up.” • WISDOM. “When you get to be my age, you’ll understand.”
Monica Montag, State College, PA
• JUSTICE. “One day you’ll have kids, and I hope they turn out just like you!” May/ June 2013

Considering Divorce? Three Point Checklist to Get Your Finances in Order Not only is a divorce an emotional split with a person you once loved, it is also a financial split. Keep these three financial things in mind as you are heading for a divorce. Good planning will help you maintain control of your financial situation and can minimize the financial impact of a divorce. First, What is your debt? Did your spouse accumulate debt in your name that you do not know about? To that end, the first thing I tell my clients is to check your credit report. This will alert you to any outstanding credit, liabilities or other debts that may be in your name -- but that you may not have been aware of. You want to verify the accuracy of all accounts and determine if any lines of credit have been opened in your name without your approval. Your spouse may have created debts that you are legally liable for, even though you weren't responsible for paying those debts during the marriage. Checking your credit report before the divorce will also let you know if your spouse has affected your personal credit profile. Joint accounts may show up on your credit report and may damage your credit. Responsibility for joint accounts must be established and resolved as part of the divorce settlement. You may need to maintain joint accounts for some time after the divorce, because one spouse may be unable to maintain credit cards or bank accounts alone and to eliminate them would cause an unacceptable hardship -- especially if minor children are involved. However, if you do maintain a joint account, reduce the credit limit to small, manageable amounts to avoid a situation where one spouse decides to go on a ‘shopping spree.’ I also recommend establishing at least one personal credit card -- and if you know a divorce is possible (or imminent), establish an account as soon as possible. Second, what are your assets? After listing your assets, have those assets appraised. Not only do homes need to be valued, but also, motor vehicles, furs, furniture, jewelry, paintings, memorabilia. The husband’s baseball card collection, may not be as valuable in today’s market as the wife would like those cards to be, but gold jewelry may be much more valuable than when originally purchased. You want to know what these things are worth, because you want to know if they are worth fighting for. Pensions, 401K plans, and retirement savings accounts also need to be valued. For example, many people going through a divorce do not realize the risks involved in accepting money in retirement accounts. Money accepted in this manner is subject to taxation when you withdraw it, so it's actually worth less than its face value at the time you receive it. This becomes an extremely important consideration if one needs to use the money immediately -- early withdrawal penalties can reduce the settlement's value even more. Make sure that you do not I read it in the Women’s Journal!
take all of the assets where you must pay the burden of taxation while the other party is getting assets that are regular cash. Third, project what your expenses will be after a divorce. The budget you had before the divorce will definitely change afterward. You may find yourself in a position where you may have kept the house, but the expenses of that home are too difficult financially to maintain. Living in the marital home with only one paycheck, will result in proportionally higher property taxes, higher energy bills and higher maintenance costs. Also, whether it's paying for babysitters, day care or expenses for child visits, you're likely to face new costs that you've never had to budget for before. Arranging for help to care for small children in the home is a sizable expense that you don't want to leave out of settlement negotiations. It may also be necessary, as your children get older, to add to your financial outlay during the negotiations the cost of additional food, clothing and transportation needed to raise a child properly. Being the custodial parent for a child can also have an indirect effect on salary increases and career advancement. Working late frequently or constant traveling for the job to earn a promotion may not be possible if you have to take care of a small child at home. Determining how you'll deal with those situations and the cost for appropriate help to care for your child will also need to be factored into your overall expenses. We are committed to the thorough understanding of your legal goals. With this understanding, we can develop a practical strategy and provide sound advice so that the impact of these events will be minimized and you can go on with your life with the least amount of obstacles blocking your new path.

Real Estate
Here We Go As spring turns to summer the promise of the coming season is quickly upon us. In the housing market it is a time of hope, anticipation and excitement. The first quarter of the year was busier than it has been in quite a while with a significant increase in closed sales for the first three months of the year*. Buyers are looking and with financial conditions stabilizing it could be a very good time to either buy or sell.
up jobs could put your property in a good position for a quick sale, assuming you have it priced right by your Realtor. Buyers are looking for good deals and are ready to act if they feel your property is a good opportunity. Even new construction seems to be rebounding and land is selling well. It appears as though we are on the edge of a solid economic turnaround that is being led by the housing market. Now is definitely the time to be active in buying or selling real estate. Consult your favorite local realtor for the details of your area and what the possibilities are for you.
Interest rates continue to be exceptionally low and lenders are becoming more willing to extend credit. Whether you are looking to buy your first home, or just ready for a move, now is one of the best times to be purchasing. The inventory of available homes is strong but not overly abundant. The patient buyer will likely find what they want, although you may have to act quickly. Many of the good properties are disappearing in a matter of days and reports of multiple offers have been more common. Many buyers who have been sitting on the fence have realized that this is the time to act.

Landscaping
A Healthy Lawn Creates Curb Appeal
By Anne Lieb, Landscape Consultant
can be controlled in the spring before they germinate and take over your lawn later in the summer. Once the weed is identified, then the proper treatment can be made. Mid-summer is a good time to treat any grubs in the lawn. These pesky insects eat the roots of your lawn killing areas of the lawn and then as white grubs mature they turn into the infamous Japanese beetles that eat your plants. So, let’s treat them as a small insect before they create other issues in the landscape. As the fall goes on, the grass leaves start to slow down in the growth, but the roots will continue to grow. Fertilizing this time of year strengthens the roots system of the lawn creating a lawn that will green up in the spring and be an overall healthier plant. Weeds can also be pretreated in planting beds and in the joints between pavers in walkways, driveways and patios. The pretreatments can be applied as a spray or a granular product that lasts an average of 60 days. Less weeding, that is something we can all enjoy.
A lush green lawn not only provides curb appeal, but it gives you a comfortable area to relax with family and friends while giving the kids & your family pets a place to play. To achieve this type of lawn, regular care will go a long way. A proper fertilization program provides the necessary nutrients for the lawn to thrive from creating strong roots to creating healthy green leaves. A strong root system helps create a more drought tolerant, disease tolerant plant that will grow and fill in the lawn leaving fewer areas for weeds to grow. Moon Brothers Landscaping follows a fertilization and weed control program from the spring through the fall to achieve different benefits throughout the year. It’s important to understand how grass grows and when insects/weeds are active to treat them most effectively. Timing applications correctly will provide good results with fewer applications. At Moon Brothers, the treatments are completed by a certified applicator who receives regular training for safe and proper use of our products. A great way to start your lawn fertilization program is to have a soil test done. This test will analyze the existing levels of nutrients and pH of your soil and a program can be developed based on these results. This allows the customized fertilization program to provide the needed nutrients without over-fertilizing. Although a thick lawn is the best weed control, there will be times when treating weeds & insects will need to be done. Some weeds, like crabgrass,

Rae’s Froth Cabbage
Café on the Park owes many of its recipes to my mother, Josephine Alexander Januszkiewicz, and her mother, Rae Brennan Alexander. Much of what they cooked revolved around the seasonal harvest of their family farm in Julian. The two loved to tell stories about the family’s colorful, culinary “Heinz 57” heritage, with recipes that date back to their Pennsylvania Dutch, English, Scottish, Irish, Quaker, and early American ancestors. Josephine most fondly recalls the strong Pennsylvania Dutch influence that seeped into her family — in architecture, where her father Kyle built one of the area’s first round barns; in language, where we “read up” the house; and in recipes, like Shoo Fly Pie, Pickled Beets, and Froth Cabbage. The latter is a creamy slaw, occasionally found in Amish and Pennsylvania Dutch cookbooks, that marries crisp, finely chopped cabbage with the creamy sweetness of whipped cream and the tangy sour bite of apple cider vinegar. While the family kitchen bible was Fanny Farmer Cookbook, Rae never followed a recipe. In fact, family lore has it that Rae often started a recipe on one page and jumped halfway through to a recipe on the following page to finish. It made for some interesting eating! Today at the café we use a sweet-sour slaw dressing of equal parts mayo, buttermilk, and sugar, with the juice of a lemon and vinegar. But nothing tastes quite as good as Rae’s Froth Cabbage, with its sweet-sour dressing of heavy cream, sugar and vinegar. Try it! You’ll like it.

Women, Finances and Retirement By Judy Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc. As the old ads used to say, “You’ve come a long way, baby!” Women have come a long way since those ads ran. (This slogan was introduced by Virginia Slims cigarettes in 1968). In the early 1970s, women began looking outside of the traditionally ‘female’ fields and geared towards careers not just jobs. What else happened in 1970 to put this into perspective? Child safety caps were first used, ABC started Monday Night Football, the Beatles’ last album, “Let it Be” was released, the floppy disc was invented and barcodes were introduced. Oh, and I was born. In 1970-71, 9.1% of the bachelor’s degrees in the United States were earned by women. Now, floppy discs and the Beatles are a thing of the past. Women earned 45.1% of bachelor’s degrees in 1984-85 and reached parity in 2000, earning 50% of the bachelor’s degrees according to David R. Francis of the National Bureau of Economic Research. Today, women account for 60% of the U.S. bachelor degree holders. In addition, all Americans are considerably better educated than they were four decades ago. By 1970, women were earning 55% as much as men. With more and higher college degrees and expanding career choices, the discrepancy in women’s wages decreased significantly by 2009, with women earning 75% as much as their male counterparts. Income disparity still remains today. The focus of my article is not to debate on why there is still a discrepancy between the wages of men and women but to offer suggestions for women to help them to retire and be financially sound even with this discrepancy. It is more important than ever given that the life expectancy for women is longer than men. In fact, women, on average, live five years longer than men. The first step to successful retirement, for anyone, is to start early. The sooner you begin to save the less you need to save systematically to reach your goals. If you can, start early, start now or increase what you are doing now. Be honest with yourself. Where are you ’wasting’ money? It could be a trip to Starbucks every week or the need for a professional manicure or pedicure. Taking the funds used there and putting them toward your retirement can really add up over time. Each year, take time in January to increase your savings for retirement. Ten percent of your gross salary is a good benchmark. This is a tough one. Women tend to be nurturers and caregivers and that can damage their nest egg. They want to help their children, I read it in the Women’s Journal!
grandchildren or other family members. The first question to ask is: Does my child/ family member actually need my financial assistance? Maybe an offer of babysitting the grandchildren would be just as good? Want to help with a down payment on your child’s first home or give money for your grandchild’s education? Make sure you can afford to do so. Your desires are driven by emotion and may not always be the right financial choice if you are not already saving enough for retirement. Women also need to be aware that we tend to be more risk-averse than men. Early on, this can hurt our returns. Risk versus reward is an age old dilemma. However, when you are still years away from retirement, taking more risk will help your account get higher returns early on. Working with an advisor can also help. An advisor can help you stay the course on investments, even during volatile periods, and include your time frame into your investment choices not just your risk tolerance. They can also help you keep your eye on the long-term goal and calculate how much you should be saving to retire comfortably. Women face many roadblocks when saving for retirement but ignoring the need to be saving or saving more, will make a bad situation worse.. Take control of your future now and find out what the best investments are for your situation and amounts you need to save for retirement. What? My Medicare Coverage is Ending When?!?! decision with the provider of their coverage, such as the nursing facility or care provider. We are dedicated to helping you receive the Medicare coverage you deserve. By Kristin Daugherty, Long-Term Care Planner The most feared words to a nursing home resident or an individual receiving outpatient care or in-home care is that his or her Medicare coverage is ending. Providers are only required to give a two day notice to the Medicare beneficiary, and the news of coverage ending often comes as a surprise. This is especially true upon admission to a skilled nursing facility, as it is presented that he or she will receive up to 100 days of Medicare coverage. They key words are up to 100 days. Unfortunately, generally, this is not the case as coverage typically ends much sooner. Fortunately, on January 24, 2013, there was a breakthrough with Medicare coverage, based on the case, Jimmo v. Sebelius. The Jimmo v. Sebelius lawsuit was brought forth on behalf of Medicare beneficiaries and organizations representing Medicare beneficiaries that had been denied coverage based on their conditions. The Jimmo agreement is a critical step in moving forward with Medicare coverage. Until now, Medicare coverage ended when the beneficiaries no longer required “skilled care” or it had been determined that the Medicare beneficiaries would not improve from continuing services. Through the Jimmo agreement, Medicare coverage is now available for beneficiaries requiring services to maintain their condition, not just to improve their condition. The Jimmo settlement is retroactive to January 18, 2011, the date the suit was filed. Any Medicare beneficiaries who received care in a skilled facility, in their home, or on an outpatient basis, and were denied coverage prior to their 100 days ending, may be eligible for a review of the denial. The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), has indicated that they are moving forward with implementing the appropriate changes and providing the proper coverage to Medicare beneficiaries. Anyone who feels that he or she been unjustly cut from Medicare benefits from January 18, 2011, through January 24, 2013, should contact The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services for further instruction. From January 24, 2013, moving forward, any Medicare beneficiaries that are denied benefits should appeal the May / June 2013

Jewelry Guide for Gifts
best of
BOTH WIDTHS
It is the season for weddings and therefore, anniversaries. Anniversaries are the perfect occasion to give the gift of jewelry in precious metals and gemstones. No one is certain just when the traditional anniversary gift list came into existence, but it probably evolved over time. Calling years twenty-five and fifty 'Silver' and 'Gold' may have originated in medieval Europe, where wives were given a silver wreath to celebrate their twenty-fifth year of marriage and a gold wreath for their fiftieth wedding anniversary. Diamonds are the traditional wedding anniversary gifts in both the sixtieth and seventh-fifth years. Year sixty probably became a part of existing traditions when Queen Victoria celebrated her Diamond Jubilee after sixty years on the British throne. Below is the list that will guide you to the perfect gift, whether it is the 1st anniversary or the 75th. Stop in, and we’ll be happy to help Watch how NYDJ’s Lift Technology® works. We you find the perfect piece of Tuck jewelry to celebrate your years together. think you’ll be amazed at the one-size smaller difference. Happy anniversary!

Before you start stocking up on Spring/Summer wardrobe for 2013, check out these tips on Spring Summer trends: 1. Colors to watch out for: Colors like white; neon like tangerine, neon pink; pastels and shades of aqua will rock in Spring/Summer 2013. The easiest and safest way to wear neon and pastel hues is to color block them with neutral hues to balance it out, or bring them in through separates. (refer to image nos. 1,2,3,5) 2. The classic combination of black and white and white on white continues to be the favorite for shoppers. (refer to image no. 4) 3. Chunky stripes in vertical or horizontal pattern: To make a bold statement opt for striped legging with an oversized graphic tee. 4. Sheer blouses will give you a sophisticated look this season. You can pair it with a tank top to make it comfortable and work appropriate. (refer to image nos. 2 and 3) 5. Go for a linens or Eco-friendly fabrics like organic cotton for the summer days. These are cool, breathable and comfortable fabrics that make you feel fresher in hot days. 6. The summer style will be all about asymmetrical hemlines, contemporary free flowing silhouettes and immaculate drapes. 7. The hey-trend for bottoms include – Prefer loose fitting, relaxed pants or dhoti pants for the warm months ahead. 8. The tribal & Aztec prints, feathers and fringes will be in with an interesting mix of colors. 9. One can team up the statement neckpieces with plain summer outfits. 10. If you don’t want to overdo with neon ensemble then you can experiment with neon clutch or you can also pair a neon clutch with the single or pastel colored outfits. 11. Team up a classic aviator or over-sized sunglasses & you are all set to make the summer sweat.

Landscaping
Making Scents in the Modern World aroma will linger. Choose a sheltered place like the side of a house or garage, a fence, wall, hedge or arbor. Hyacinths will bloom in early spring and create a cloud of perfume, and lily-of-the-valley is an intoxicating ground cover for very shaded areas. If shrubs like lilacs, Korean Spice viburnum and butterfly bushes as well as Asiatic lilies, scented roses, honeysuckle and autumn clematis are planted near open windows, their heady scent can be enjoyed inside and out. Fragrant annuals like heliotrope and flowering tobacco as well as perennials such as dianthus, bee balm, fragrant hosta, peonies, astilbe and woodland phlox can be grown near patios, pools and decks where family and friends gather. Large planters filled with herbs - basil, thyme, rosemary, hyssop, mint and lemon balm - can be placed near the kitchen door for easy access for cooking. Scented geraniums and lavender by a walk way release their aroma as people brush past them. Thyme planted between stepping stones on a little-worn path will creep between the pavers, and like strewing herbs, release a pleasant scent when walked upon. If you want to enjoy these scents all year, dry flowers and herbs to make potpourri and sachets, for cooking, teas or hand creams and healing salves. Most importantly, plant some fragrant plants where you will be able to enjoy them, and make new and pleasant memories of your own.
By Melody Aumiller of Fox Hill Gardens Ah, fragrant flowers! Take a deep breath and think about what feelings and memories come to mind. Scent, memory and emotion are deeply intertwined, all processed and stored in the same area of human brains called the limbic system. That’s why we associate memories and feelings with certain smells. It often reminds us of people, places and events we’ve experienced, especially from our childhood, since that’s where we first encounter most familiar aromas. The vase of lilac flowers or bar of lavender soap can elicit strong sentiments because of memories they evoke. Because fragrance can affect us deeply, it’s important to consider including scented plants in our home gardens since it adds so much enjoyment to our lives, both outdoors in our landscape and in arrangements, wreaths and dried bouquets indoors. Herbalists were particularly familiar with the healing effects plants could provide, and that knowledge was passed down and built upon by generations. Modern research of compounds found in scented plants supports many of their traditional uses. Thymol, for instance, is a powerful antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal ingredient found in the herb thyme that has been used for millennia to heal, and it is still used in mouthwash today. Ancient Babylonians and Egyptians bathed with fragrant water scented with herbs and flowers, and thyme oil was effective in the mummification process, acting as a preservative. Many cultures have used the smoke of plants and plant resins to purify the air, from primitive peoples to Ancient Greeks and until the present day in religious rituals. Native Americans used bee balm for its antiseptic properties to treat skin infections, wounds and burns, as well as tea for certain maladies. During the Middle Ages in Europe, people rarely bathed and garbage disposal and sewage systems were non-existent. Aromatic herbs, called ‘strewing herbs’, were scattered over the floors in poor and rich homes alike, and this practice continued into the Renaissance. The plants released a pleasant aroma as people walked on them, but also repelled insects, keeping grain and wool moths as well as fleas at bay, and possibly the plague. Herbs were worn on the body and clothing, and carried in bundles so they could be sniffed when near an unpleasant smell. Increasing trade with Asia allowed cinnamon to be included in pomanders and foods. Interestingly, though people of the time were not aware of it, a component of cinnamon is antibacterial and antifungal, effective against typhus and many other bacterial diseases and an excellent food preservative. In the Victorian era, many cities were polluted and fragrant gardens were a respite from the sulfurous smog of smoking chimneys. Flowers and herbs were brought into the house to grace mantles and dining room tables for their beauty and to help perfumes mask odors cause by a lack of air conditioning and the skin covering modest clothing of the day. Lavender has been a particularly popular herb for its wonderful scent and calming qualities. Besides fragrance, lavender soap has antiseptic properties and was used in WW I hospitals as a disinfectant. Fragrant plants have been important to people of every continent, and have traveled with emigrants to new lands as seeds or seedlings, bringing emotional comfort and a sense of the familiar - medicine for the spirit. In the age of running water and better hygiene, you can create a calming refuge from the hectic pace of our modern world. We aren’t so different from our ancestors, and aromatic herbs and fragrant flowers can still uplift us, adding an important dimension of pleasure to our lives. For maximum enjoyment, plant in calm areas where their

DID YOU KNOW? 10 Good Uses For Salt Just a pinch of it and it’s worth it. We’re talking salt here. Used throughout human history, mentioned often in the Bible, ubiquitous and cheap. Mined from salt rocks and extracted from sea water, salt is… well, the “salt of the earth.” You can’t live without it healthily. At the same time, you can’t live healthily with too much of it. 7. Remove stains from your coffee pot. Fill it with 1/4 cup of table salt and a dozen ice cubes. Swish the mixture around, let it sit for half an hour, fill it with cold water and rinse. Your coffee pot will look brand new.

The Williamsport Inventor’s Club The Williamsport Inventor’s Club is an informal forum to help inventors turn their ideas into commercially viable products. Members of the Club represent a good balance of age, gender, and prominence. Most have future or past inventions, some quite important on a global scale. They share their experiences, while newer members receive feedback, and learn from expert speakers skilled in the U.S. and International Intellectual Property & Patent laws, Prototyping, Product Development, Business Start Up, and Marketing processes. Members are assured confidentiality, via signed Non-Disclosure Agreements, should they choose to talk directly about their inventions – a decision that is completely optional. Many members speak only in vague terms about their ideas. Those who only seek information or wish to test the viability for their ideas under consideration, are also invited to attend. The Club is an informal association with no legal ties to any group. It receives support and encouragement from the Williamsport/ Lycoming Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) and SCORE (http://www.lycoming.org/SCORE/). Membership is open to anyone who agrees to the organization’s values & terms. Meetings are generally held on the 4th Wednesday of every month at two May/ June 2013 May / June 2013

Together – We Make A Big Difference! 3. You want 100% of your donations to go directly to a local charity. 4. If you want your generous donations to become a part of a large amount of money by joining together with other women - creating a powerful impact in your local area. LEARN how by visiting one of the ongoing chapters in central PA.
All women are invited.... choose your location or create your own group. All our women feel they are making a powerful impact in their own local communities without the time consuming effort we all associate with fundraising. Yes, it is possible. Three benevolent groups of central PA women meet four times a year. Each woman is interested in making a difference in her community. They come from all walks of life and varying financial backgrounds but they have one thing in common – a heart of gold. As individuals they want to make a meaningful impact but understand that when they get together and join forces that impact is HUGE. This is their way to contribute to local non-profits as a group. Every three months, they meet and a number of worthy charities are presented. One is chosen by the group to receive their individual donations. If you want 100% of your donation to go directly to a local charitable organization; if you want to learn about amazing work that is being done locally; if you want to become part of creating a powerful group that makes an immediate, direct, and positive impact in your community, then 100 Women Who Care could be your answer.

Health
Are Headaches Bringing You Down? Did you know that headaches affect 9 out of 10 Americans? Headaches can fall into several categories and are listed below.
In our office, doctors Kelli Datres and Kevin McCarthy can help treat all headache types of pain. They strive to find the root cause of the symptoms so headache pain can be relieved long term. This is often done through spinal manipulation, balancing neck muscles with applied kinesiology, and fixing digestive concerns. We also use essential oils to help reduce inflammation.
1. Tension Headaches are the most common type of headache experienced. They can cause achy, dull pressure around the forehead, temples, and back of the neck. Often times they are caused by muscle imbalances due to over contraction in the scalp and neck areas or increased stress. They do not usually cause nausea or vomiting. Tension headaches can occur in children and adults.
If you have questions or would like an appointment, please call our Williamsport office at (570) 567-7765 or our State College location at (814) 954-7774. We are looking forward to helping you feel your best. The Greatest Wealth is Your Health!
2. Migraines are associated with moderate to severe pain and are often described as pounding or throbbing pain. They can cause symptoms such as dizziness, vomiting, blurry vision, and light, sound, or odor sensitivity. Migraines are believed to be due to changes in the blood vessels in the head, genetics, or food sensitivities.
We are now in two locations to serve you better!
3. Cluster Headaches are the least common. However, they are the most severe. This type of headache is defined as constant stabbing, burning, or throbbing pain, which is often located behind one eye. They occur one to three times a day and then disappear for weeks or years.
1050-5 Benner Pike State College, PA 16801
4. Sinus Headaches are described as dull constant pain or pressure into the cheekbones, bridge of nose, and forehead. This headache usually accompanies other symptoms such as nasal discharge, fever, and ear soreness.

Girl Scouts in the Heart of PA By Monica Miller, West Region Membership Recruiter Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania (GSHPA) serves almost 27,000 girls in 30 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. We welcome all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade, as well as adults interested in volunteering, embracing every aspect of diversity.
more about themselves, connect with each other and their communities, and take action to make the world a better place. With adult guidance and supervision, girls take the lead, democratically planning and carrying out the year’s program components and community service activities.
The Girl Scout Leadership Experience is girl-driven, reflecting the ever-changing needs and interests of participating girls. Girl Scouts provides girls ages 5 to 17 with a wide variety of leadership opportunities and learning opportunities. We have adapted our programs to meet the needs of the girls! Once a girl becomes a member of GSHPA, she can participate in any or all of the following activities:
Virtual: The internet is now a
way of life for most people and offer opportunities for girls to participate in high-quality activities in a safe, secure, online environment. We have informational and educational resources on our Website as well as Web-based activities such as online networking, badge programs and activities.
Camp: It gives girls a chance to explore nature, the environment and the world. GSHPA offers high-quality programs in a safe, secure environment at our camp properties. Whether attending a day camp, a sleep away camp or a weekend, camping continues to be an integral way to help girls develop their outdoor skills while building interpersonal leadership skills.
To become a member or for more information visit our website at www.gshpa.org or call and ask to speak with your local Membership Recruiter, 800-692-7816.
Events: Stand-alone programs combine educational moments with fun, hands-on
activities. Great community partnerships allow us to offer special events to help today’s girls become tomorrow’s leader — career days for older girls, leadership conferences for teens or even an educational fun day with one of our local minor league baseball teams.
Series: A sequence of linked sessions bring girls together around a common
interest for a specific amount of time. Outreach programs are a great opportunity for girls in our area who may not have access to a traditional Girl Scout setting. Our after-school programs give girls a sense of community, friendship and belonging. The positive setting helps set a good foundation for their futures.
Travel: Travel opportunities offer leadership opportunities and cross-cultural understanding. Local, domestic and international trips are facilitated by volunteers, staff and Girl Scouts of the USA. Every year girls from our council travel to places such as Rome, London and Paris. Many begin with a trip to Savannah, Ga., to see the birthplace of Girl Scouts of the USA founder Juliette Gordon Low. Traveling is a learning experience helping girls hone reallife skills like planning, budgeting, organization and leadership.
Still Growing Strong
Today, there are 3.2 million Girl Scouts—2.3 million girl members and 890,000 adult members working primarily as volunteers.

Why I am Involved with the Women's Leadership Symposium: "I am very passionate about this event. The first Symposium I attended back in 2009 inspired me on so many levels that I just knew I had to become part of the process to prepare for such an inspiring, uplifting event. The fact that the Planning Committee first sets as it's goal and mission a concentrated effort to elevate the symposium to a higher level each year. Secondly continues to provide a support to the Valley's women for the challenges that they continuously face in work and in life makes me feel like I am helping to make a difference through one of our community's greatest gems, the Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. I am so very proud and consider myself blessed to be a part of this incredible group of women, who are not only my co-committee members, but, have most certainly become my friends.” - Renee Ferry, Healthcare Account Manager, Marketing Works Rhonda Campbell is the owner of Rhonda Campbell Consulting Solutions and coauthor of The PIT Crew. Rhonda has chaired the Women's Leadership Symposium Committee for four years. "I love the WLS because it brings together a diverse blend of women with different professional backgrounds, experience, interests, and expertise. I believe so strongly in professional development, mentoring, and networking and the WLS deliver all three. It is never dull. It is never mundane. And, it always EmpowHers!" – Rhonda I look forward to the Women's Leadership Symposium every year for the opportunity to meet and network with other women who face many of the same challenges that I do. Forging professional relationships from these networking events has led to my own career growth, and sometimes even brings a new friendship! - Cindy Wenger "This symposium is one of the best in Central PA.... I'm so lucky to be working with this group of ladies. They are dedicated to having the best speakers and vendors. Their history goes back many years. I've been with them about five years and happy to serve." - Tere Rill, Publisher The Women’s Journal

Renee Gerringer, Director of Programs & Development, Greater Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce Keelie Schock is Assistant Director of Event Management at Susquehanna University. “It’s been a true pleasure to work on the symposium with such a dedicated group of ladies. Everyone is very supportive of each other and willing to take on extra work to make sure we’re presenting the best possible program. The committee members really take their duties to heart.” Patti Fulmer has been a member of the Women’s Leadership Symposium Committee since its inception in 2005. “The Women’s Leadership Symposium is an uplifting and motivating day full of learning, networking and having fun.” - Patti Arion Moser has worked for the Greater Susquehanna Valley YMCA for 14 years. “The Women's Leadership Symposium is a fantastic way to network in our community with other female professionals and to learn new skills and ideas to take back to our everyday lives.” - Arion Cindy Ackley - 13 years at Susquehanna University and Central Susquehanna Intermediate Unit where she holds the position of Human Resources Support Services Manager. Cindy was an attendee of the symposium before becoming a committee member. She believes this day offers powerful information to women and empowers them with ideas to reach their potential both personally and professionally. Info for bottom of page….

"The Symposium is a fun and informative day of networking and learning, and fuels me for the rest of the year! Support for Chronic Health Problems-A Functional Approach to be a better way. I have spent several years and 100‘s of hours of study in that pursuit. The things being done to “fight” disease are not the same things that create health. Unfortunately, what we call healthcare is actually disease or sickness care and this is why we have such poor outcomes.
“I have improved energy, am sleeping through the night, my restless leg syndrome has improved, weight loss, nausea gone completely, and less tingling and numbness in extremities. I feel like I am getting top-notch care.” ~ Lisa E, Lewisberry
What kind of health problems can functional medicine help? That is the beauty of this system of health care delivery. It does not matter what the person has been labeled with because we are not treating a diagnosis. We are supporting our patients for maximum healing and an improved quality of life.
What is functional medicine? It is a science based approach to help identify and address the causes for a patient’s condition or symptoms rather than covering them up with medications and their unwanted side effects. Too many doctors are treating lab values instead of patients, ignoring Sir William Osler’s admonition that “It is more important to know what patient has the disease than to know what disease the patient has.”
We have supported people with: • Fibromyalgia/Chronic pain • Fatigue • Thyroid Symptoms • Weight Loss • IBS/Crohn’s/Colitis • Neuropathy • Autoimmune Conditions • and much more
As a chiropractor, how did you come to study functional medicine? It comes from having a philosophy that health comes from within and that the human body, when given what it needs, has an amazing ability to heal itself. I work from the idea and an understanding that we need to find and fix the underlying causes of poor health instead of chasing after symptoms. In one person, it may be a spinal misalignment or subluxation causing their problem. In another it could be a food sensitivity or allergy, dysbiosis, a hidden infection, a toxicity, or a deficiency. As a healthcare provider, you need to be a really good detective, ask the right questions and do the right tests to unravel a persons chronic health problem. You really need to look at all the pieces of the puzzle. In my practice, I saw how poorly the traditional medical system managed chronic health problems and knew there had
