Publisher Note I'm a fan, reader and advertiser of The Women's Journal! ~ Colleen
The words below say exactly how I feel about what all is happening to central PA and our PSU Nittany Nation. These feelings are for those boys who were abused by one man and for all that our current fans, atheletes and others have suffered because of him. ~Tere Rill, Publisher/owner
Tara Sophia Mohr says Sometimes, love says no.
I’ve been thinking about the “If-you-don’t-have-anything-nice-to-say-don’t-sayanything-at-all” thing. It might surprise you, but I’m not a fan. Most of us gals were raised on some form of this notion. We grew up into lovely caring grownups who always want to be positive. Here’s my problem with that. You can’t be awake to what’s happening in the world right now and also always be calm and sharing something positive. Not in this insane world where: 25 % of American children – 1 in 4 – live in poverty. Almost 1 in 100 Americans are in prison. Globally, 1 out of 3 women is beaten or sexually assaulted during her lifetime. We are wreaking havoc on our planet – with no plan in place to course correct. Caring women and men around the world are angry and sad about all this, but we often shy away from raw, passionate critique about the status quo because; we don’t want to be angry; we don’t want to be negative; we don’t want to just talk about the problem, if we have no solution to bring to the table. We’ve been scarred by the times the skeptic stood across from us and said, “Well, it doesn’t sound like you have anything to propose instead. This is obviously just how the real world has to be.” Lately, I’ve been noticing how many of us (myself included) have come to feel it’s wrong, unattractive, or toxic to criticize something, unless we have a complete, plug-and-play, flawless solution ready to offer. But what if the deep order of things is that solutions arise after a critical mass declares:”No more!”? What if it is sometimes necessary to say no to reveal what you want to say yes to? I am working on courageously saying those big no’s of protest without feeling like I have to have solutions in order to do so. I want you to come with me—not only because it’s less scary to do it alone, but also because I think your doing so will serve the world. Can you give yourself permission to say your honest, heartfelt critiques even when you don’t have a solution to share? Give yourself to permission to simply say no to the systems – an educational system, a health care system, a financial system, a food system – that do not place human health and communal wellbeing at the center. Say no. Say, “this is insane.” Say, “we’ve lost our way.” Say, “this isn’t the way it has to be.” Saying no to the systems as they are can be an act of fierce love. Sometimes, before it can say anything else, love says no. In saying no, we get in touch with the goodness in us, the decency that demands something better for humanity. There is a place in each of us that became so sad long ago, as we each witnessed the everyday inhumanity of the world. It probably happened in you before age 8 or so. That part still mourns daily for what happens daily on earth. Let that part speak, and cry, and say no more. We have yet to see what an ocean of compassionate tears can do. September / October 2012

Continuing Education
Free Penn State Program Helps Adults Transition to College By Samantha Monacci
Going to college or changing careers can be nerve-wracking enough the first time, but for women interested in returning to school later in life, Penn State Continuing Education (CE) has the resources to make the transition a little easier—and more successful. Transitions: College and Career Prep is a free program sponsored in State College and Lewistown by Continuing Education and local educational partners that include Central Intermediate Unit 10, State College Area School District (SCASD), and Tuscarora Intermediate Unit 11. The program is for adults (including new GED graduates) who are interested in beginning or resuming college or another postsecondary school, who need to obtain the academic skills to be successful in the classroom. The course focuses on college-level writing, study strategies, research, technology, career exploration, creating an educational plan, and presentation skills. The State College program runs for eight weeks, two evenings per week; the Lewistown program runs for nine weeks, and this fall it will be offered three evenings per week. You can watch a video about Transitions at http://ceup.psu.edu/ Transitions-video. “Many adults want to go back to school, but they are not sure where or how to start,” said Betsy Esposito, academic resource coordinator for CE. “They can be highly motivated but need to brush up on their skills.” Esposito said that a lot of women will return to school to improve employment opportunities, complete their unfinished degrees Betsy Esposito speaking with Transitions students from years ago, reach for a personal educational goal, or because they find “it’s my time” now that their kids are in school or out of college.
Liz Lasher works on career goals with a Transitions class.
Liz Lasher, Ph.D., LPC, Continuing Education career counselor, said that most women have common fears when they contemplate going back to school: they wonder whether they can compete academically, whether they can afford it or have time for studying in their busy schedules, and whether their investment will be worth it in the end.
“Women often doubt themselves,” Lasher said. “They frequently have less confidence around the sciences and math. They often struggle with coming back to school and potentially shortchanging their families.” The skills that they learn at Transitions have the potential to change them, not just in academics, but across all facets of their lives. “Developing an educational plan based on career interests, personal strengths, and research is the keystone to the Transitions program,” said Esposito. The classes are held in Penn State classrooms, taught by instructors from the Intermediate Units and SCASD, and supported by CE admission and financial aid staff. Karen Dunlap, a Transitions alumna from the fall 2011 program, can attest to this. After being out of college for twenty years, she wanted to enroll at Penn State to pursue a degree. Penn State CE staff recommended that she take the course to help her enhance her study skills and academic preparedness. Transitions program graduate Karen Dunlap
“I worried that I wouldn’t be able to keep up with everything, since I work full-time and have children,” said Dunlap, who is enrolled in the human development and family studies program. “They were very helpful with showing us different ways to manage our time.”
Transitions showed Dunlap that she wasn’t alone with the fears she had about returning to school, and it also raised her self-esteem. “It helped boost my confidence so I’m not afraid to go after what I want anymore,” Dunlap said. In addition to the Transitions program, Penn State Continuing Education offers regularly scheduled Information Sessions for area adults interested in enrolling at Penn State. Visit http://ceup.psu.edu to learn more about upcoming sessions. This fall, Transitions courses will be held in State College and Lewistown: State College (at Penn State University Park campus) September 24–November 14 6:00–8:30 p.m., Monday and Wednesday evenings Call Continuing Education at 814-865-3443 to preregister. Healthcare is now the largest business in the United States. Healthcare systems, from solo practice physicians to large medical centers or health care organizations, are now in competition to gain access to patients because they represent dollars. Unfortunately, advertising about health care is here as a result. But do the ads really help you choose where to go? Does a catchy jingle or a logo really mean good healthcare? Is good healthcare provided by a new building or a healthcare insurance plan? No, the jingle and logo mean a good advertising department and the building and plan signify a team of administrators. Good health care comes from good doctors who surround themselves with good staff. The doctor on the billboard or TV commercial may look good, but who is that doctor? Do you want to put you life in their hands because they made a commercial? Bottom line is, know your doctor! David R. Arbutina, MD, FACS a distinguished graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha medical honor society. He is an expert, educator and leader in surgery who since 1988 has dedicated his career to the treatment of breast cancer. As an expert, Dr. Arbutina has cared for well over 1,000 breast cancer patients. He has also treated thousands of women with benign breast conditions and has the expertise to distinguish between the two. He has personally been the lead investigator in breast cancer research protocols. He has been an advocate for surgical education. Then, Colonel Arbutina, was the director of one of four general surgery residencies in the United States Air Force. He was in charge of the program for 10 years and was personally responsible for training over 50 Air Force surgeons who through his guidance now practice in many different surgical fields. He continues to maintain his academic appointment at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences at Bethesda. As a leader, he was the chief consultant to the Air Force Surgeon General in general surgery and was responsible for surgical assignments around the world. He is a past President of the Society of Air Force Clinical Surgeons and was also awarded that society’s Excalibur Award. Today, Dr. Arbutina is the current President of the Keystone Chapter of the American College of Surgeons where over the past 5 years he has personally directed 2 educational programs for the regions surgeons. Finally, he is a governor of the American College of Surgeons, and as such, helps forge policies to promote safe and economical surgical care across the nation. Back to School, Backpacks and Back Pain Back trouble can be a real “pain in the neck”, and adults aren’t always the only sufferers. Muscle strains and imbalances can occur in children as well. There are many factors that can lead to back pain in children. Sometimes increased or improper exercise routines cause back discomfort in kids. Other times, the contributing factors are poor sitting posture and long periods of inactivity (think video games/excessive computer use). Additionally, there are those kids who actually strain their backs by lugging around a locker full of books and school supplies improperly all day.
or backpacks thrown over one shoulder for keeping neck, shoulder and low back pain injuries to a minimum. Muscle pain and strain can often be treated by a physical therapist in an outpatient setting. In some rare cases, back pain in children can be the symptom of a more serious underlying cause. If your child has back pain that doesn’t seem to be subsiding, a consultation with a physical therapist may help to address some of the developing muscular imbalances. Certain exercises or stretches may help to alleviate pain and correct improper posture, no matter if the cause is sports/activity related or an acute strain injury.
Many physical therapists recommend kids carry no more than 1015% of their body weight around in their backpacks, to help minimize the strain on the back. The spinal column is made up of 33 bones called vertebrae , and between the vertebrae are discs that act as natural shock absorbers. When a heavy weight is placed on the shoulders, such as an overfilled backpack, kids compensate for the backwards pull of the weight by shifting forward at the hips, or arching the back , causing postural changes that over time can contribute to back pain. Backpacks that are worn correctly and distribute the weight more evenly over the body, tend to be better than shoulder bags, messenger style bags

How is it that you can be doing all the right things and your body continues to make new fat cells, preventing you from reaching your goals? The answer is simple... You are toxic. No matter what your daily habits, our present environment makes detoxing a now necessary requirement to enjoying the possibility of healthy, permanent weight loss. Storing toxins in your fat cells is your body's way of protecting its vital organs. When you lose weight without detoxing, your fat cells shrink and the toxins become more concentrated and more harmful. Without detoxing, your body actually fights losing the weight in an effort to protect you. As a result, short-term weight loss can make you feel worse!

Fungus Creates Foot Frustrations! Many are horrified to find that their toenails are yellow, discolored and thickened after taking off our summer polish! In the majority of cases, the discoloration and thickening is due to a fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. The nails also can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed.
Don't get out of step being the one with fungus nails
Twenty three million people are affected by nail fungus in the United States. Many well known therapies are costly with poor results. Laser Light Therapy in now available, and clinical studies show it kills nail fungus for a majority of patients. How does the nail fungus laser work? A toenail fungus laser works by shining a focused beam of light into a toenail infected with fungus. The laser penetrates the toenail and vaporizes fungus embedded in the nail bed and nail plate where toenail fungus exists. Is nail laser treatment painful? The focused, targeted laser light beam will have no effect on healthy tissue and will only target the infected areas. A patient should experience no discomfort. There is no need to suffer. there now is a solution to treating thick, discolored nails, laser light therapy. This treatment has been shown to effectively treat onychomycosis (toenail fungus) in clinical and in-office trials, and uses invisible infrared beams to safely treat fungal nails with no pain or adverse side effects. Unlike current oral medications used to treat nail fungus, laser light therapy requires no liver testing and is safe for most diabetics and pregnant women. ad_BeWellAssoc_jun12_+ 5/30/12 8:12 PM Page 1

oncology research nurse coordinator, to learn about the trial as part of the informed consent process. Sue became an important part of Carol’s care team during the clinical trial.
Clinical Trials Broaden Treatment Options for Susquehanna Health Cancer Center Patients When doctors discovered Carol Kell, 58, of Renovo had an aggressive breast cancer that had spread to her lymph nodes, her oncologist, Dr. Charles Agbemabiese, presented her with many treatment options including a clinical trial, a controlled research study of a treatment. One of the final stages of cancer research, a clinical trial is a study where patients help to find out whether promising approaches to cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment are safe and effective. Knowing she could help with cancer research, Carol didn’t hesitate to choose the clinical trial.
I’M A SUSQUEHANNA WOMAN. “They treated my breast cancer with chemo and compassion. When I went to the Breast Health Center for my yearly mammogram, my Susquehanna Health doctor discovered a small lump in my breast and immediately did an ultrasound and biopsy. Thank goodness they caught it early. They decided to perform a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction, followed by chemotherapy. It really wasn’t too bad. Their Cancer Center has massages, TVs and comfy reclining chairs so I could close my eyes and relax. I’m in remission now and looking forward to a full life with my husband and two wonderful children. I sure miss those massages, though.” – Lori Fishel, Cogan Station
“If I could make things better for someone in the future, then absolutely I wanted to do it,” said Carol.

Susquehanna Health Cancer Center’s affiliations with Penn State Hershey Cancer Institute and the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group provides patients local access to a broad spectrum of medical oncology and radiation oncology clinical trials aimed at treatment and prevention of cancer. “Clinical trials benefit our patients by making an emerging treatment available when it is still in the research and development phase. We have seen trials lead to better treatments, outcomes and less toxicity for patients. This is another way we’re bringing leading edge care to the region,” says Dr. Warren Robinson, an oncologist at the Cancer Center. While Carol experienced some difficult times during her trial, which compared the effectiveness of chemotherapy with different intensity and frequency of doses, she is happy that she participated and was very pleased with the timeliness and attention to every issue that she had.

The Million Dollar Question:
When Is the Best Time to Become an Olympic Shuffleboard Player? By: Samantha K. Wolfe, Esquire, LL.M. in Taxation
5. Have the desire to retire As foreign it might sound, some individuals enjoy working. For those individuals, their career or job gives them meaning and purpose; and, frankly, if they didn’t have that, their lives would not be fulfilling. For those individuals, retirement may not be rewarding. Make sure you have something in your life that will make your retirement enjoyable. Just because you are able to retire doesn’t mean that you should. I have quite a few years before I will be able to retire, but that doesn’t stop me from plotting and planning to ensure I am ready to win the Olympic Gold Medal in shuffleboard. Is shuffleboard even an Olympic sport? If not, hopefully by the time I reach retirement age there will be such a competition, and if not, I will find fulfillment spending time with my grandchildren . . . I can’t think of a better plan. Don’t delay—Call Steinbacher & Stahl today to schedule your FREE retirement planning consultation.
I will let you in on a little secret: I think I might have the potential to be an Olympic shuffleboard player. Have I ever played? No, not once, but I’m making my retirement plans early, and they involve becoming an Olympic shuffleboard player. Occasionally clients will ask: “Can I retire after this year?” or “How do I know if I am able to retire?” These questions are not simple ones to answer. These involve reviewing your financial situation and looking at the big picture. I don’t think it is ever premature to begin planning for retirement. When I advise clients regarding a timetable for retirement, I recommend they do the following five things to determine if they are ready to retire: 1. Make a budget Examine how much you spend every month versus how much money you bring home each month. Ask yourself if your spending will increase or decrease when you retire. Does your entire monthly income go toward paying your bills or are you able to save some of your income? Most retirees receive income from several sources: Social Security, pensions, investments, and sometimes a part-time job. You need to make sure you will receive enough income from these or other sources to pay all of your monthly bills. I recommend that if your entire monthly income goes toward paying your monthly bills and you are not able to save any portion of your income, then you are not ready to retire. 2. Create a nest egg The amount that you save must fill the void between your monthly expenses and your guaranteed sources of income. Your guaranteed sources of income may include Social Security, pensions, IRA distributions, etc. It is advisable for you to estimate your life expectancy, then factor the cost of inflation into that calculation to determine how many years your savings may be needed to supplement your income. 3. Plan as if you will need long-term care Nursing home care costs roughly $8,100 per month. If you now have or later develop a chronic illness that will require long-term care, how will you pay for your care? Have you considered asset preservation? Have you considered long-term care insurance? Consult an attorney that specializes in elder law to discuss your longterm care planning options. 4. Pay off debt Debt can be a major source of stress. If you are considering whether to retire, I recommend making sure you have paid off all of your debts. If you don’t, not only will you have to pay your monthly expenses, but you will also have the additional financial drain of loan payments, and your retirement lifestyle may not be sustainable. Prescription Pill Addiction
Trauma and Grief
Jill was given Vicodin for her chronic back pain. One year later she was given Oxycontin because the higher doses of Vicodin no longer worked, or so she told her doctor. Six months later, she was arrested for stealing a prescription pad and writing counterfeit prescriptions. She kept repeating, “But they were prescribed.” The latest research shows 1 in 3 American adults suffer from chronic pain. Opioids are the most effective treatment for chronic pain. 80% of all opioids are prescribed in the United States. Opioids are quickly becoming the largest drug of abuse seen in treatment centers. An alarming trend is the abuse of prescription pills by teens and young adults. “Pharm” (short for pharmaceutical) parties are organized by teens and young adults so they can take fistfuls of pills with no knowledge of what those pills may be. Party goers bring whatever pills they can get from the family medicine chest, including over the counter medications, and everything is put in a common bowl. Emergency rooms around the country are seeing patients brought in with overdoses from a toxic combination of medications. Many people who suffer from prescription pill addiction believe they are not addicted because the medications are prescribed by their doctor. They look at the use of prescription pills as “safe” when compared to other illicit drugs. When they start taking more than is prescribed or looking for illicit ways to obtain the drugs, a problem exists. When a person finds himself/herself rummaging through other people’s medicine cabinets or taking their child’s prescription ADHD medication, there is a problem. When a voluntary choice becomes a psychological (and sometimes physical) need, a line has been crossed from use into abuse or addiction. The first thing to do in healing from prescription pill addiction (or any addiction) is to admit there is a problem. The second thing to do is to find someplace where you can be evaluated for the extent of your addiction and the appropriate level of care. That is where the professionals at Rehab After Work/Rehab After School come into the picture. Rehab After Work/Rehab After School provides Outpatient Drug and Alcohol services when you need them - after work or after school. The majority of our clients continue to be employed and participate in treatment while working or going to school. Rehab After Work/Rehab After School is now open in State College, Pennsylvania and is taking new patients. Please call 1-800-238HELP (4357) today to schedule your evaluation or visit us at WWW. REHABAFTERWORK.COM.
Much has been published lately about the impact on the community of the Jerry Sandusky case. For those in the community who have a history of trauma and abuse, media coverage may be reviving flashbacks or body memories of past abuse. These are symptoms of post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or acute stress disorder (depending on the length of time since the trauma). Other symptoms could include increased anxiety, especially around crowds of people; increased depressive issues such as sleeping too much or not at all, eating too much or not at all, or a general loss of energy and interest in life. Finally, the symptoms of hypervigilance or hyperarousal may appear. Hypervigilance describes a state of abnormally high level of arousal, responsiveness to stimuli, and a constant scan of the environment for threats. Hyperarousal symptoms are the result of a continuously high level of fight or flight chemicals being released in the body and the brain. These symptoms include high anxiety, heightened level of irritability, outbursts of anger, a feeling of being constantly on guard, and being jumpy or easily startled. These warning signs of PTSD may cause a person to enter into counseling for anxiety or depression and the underlying issue of past trauma is revealed at later sessions. Heather Redmond, MSW, LCSW, a part time therapist with Life Counseling Services, began her practice in trauma and grief with the children and family members of those who died on 9/11. She has found that many of the reactions to trauma are universal reactions to trauma. There is grief associated with any loss in a person’s life. A loss of innocence, a loss of a loved one, or a loss of a loved one in a traumatic manner, can all trigger grief. Nicole White, M.Ed, LPC, a full time therapist at Life Counseling Services, has over ten years experience with adolescent and family therapy states, “Trauma affects the entire family unit. The emotional toll can be overwhelming and communication can become challenging when trying to verbalize the pain and confusion being experienced. Sometimes this can result in acting out behaviors or withdrawal and isolation.” Through a supportive and trusting environment, Life Counseling Services therapists are there to assist clients through these difficult times. If you are feeling any of the above symptoms, please take the time to talk with one of our professional counselors. Mental health is just as important as your physical health. If you would like a confidential evaluation with one of our licensed therapists, please call 1-800-882-2799 or visit us on the world wide web at WWW.LIFECOUNSELING.ORG.
Life Counseling Services and Rehab After Work/Rehab After School invite you to our grand opening Open House. Friday, October 12 from 10:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. The community and service providers in the area are all invited to help us celebrate the grand opening of our newest office in State College. The Unexpected Gift would determine not only the sex of the baby, but would also show whether there were any prospective problems. The results were to be ready in two weeks. In the meantime, my husband decided that he would think of boys’ names in case we were having a boy instead of a girl. He decided the boy’s name would be Trey Robert. When the results showed that we were having a girl, his disappointment quickly turned to delight. When my daughter was born one week before Thanksgiving, we were residing in Stone Mountain, GA, so when an opening with my husband’s job became available in our home state of Pennsylvania where we had family members, my husband was transferred. Two years ago when my daughter was married and her father officiated at the wedding, she married her best friend and his name was Trey Robert. My husband also got the son that he always wanted. Some would say that this was merely a coincidence; however, I knew in my heart that it was not. I believe that at the time when I got pregnant, along with the move back to our home state, the city that we chose to live in, the school that my daughter attended and the friends that she made were all part of a higher plan. Even the date that she was born on turned out to be the date that I had written down in my journal on that night I heard the voice telling me the wonderful news that I would become pregnant. I wrote down November 16, 1986. She was born on November 16, 1987, one week before my due date. She was the unexpected, delightful gift we received, and I will always be thankful that I listened and continued to believe that all things are possible.
Pastor’s Wife
When my husband and I were married for almost five years and I still had not conceived, we decided that I should undergo tests to see why this had not occurred. The results showed that I had a partial blockage and had below the normal percentage rate of getting pregnant. The doctor indicated that some women often get pregnant within two years after undergoing testing; however, in our case, this did not happen. As the years quickly passed by, I continued to believe and trust that there was a reason for everything. In November, 1986, one month away from our eighteenth wedding anniversary, as I was getting ready for bed, my thoughts were interrupted at hearing a still, small voice telling me that “when you have a baby girl, you are to name her Jessica Kathryn.” Since my husband was away on a business trip and I was alone in the house, the voice startled me for just a moment. However, I decided to write down the name and date in my journal and quickly said a prayer of thanksgiving. By the middle of March of the following year, I had been feeling nauseated in the mornings so I purchased a pregnancy test and discovered I was pregnant. My husband and I were so excited. The next day, I contacted the doctor. Since I was over 35 and this was my first pregnancy, he scheduled an appointment for the same afternoon. While at my appointment, the doctor confirmed that I was pregnant and that I was due on November 23 which was Thanksgiving Day that year. My husband and I were so thankful. The doctor also scheduled a specialized test that September September// October 2012

HELPING WOMEN WITH CANCER October ushers in a changing of the season in Central Pennsylvania. Amid the reds, golds, and yellows of the late summer foliage, another color emerges; pink. October is breast cancer awareness month and pink is everywhere. While many people become more aware of breast cancer during this time of year, not all realize that the American Cancer Society provides an array of free programs designed to help women overcome any cancer diagnosis and fight back against the disease.
Free Patient Services & Programs The Look Good Feel Better program is available to any woman in active cancer treatment. During a two hour, hands-on group workshop, women are taught valuable skills in dealing with changes to their skin, hair, and nails due to cancer treatment. Each session is led by a trained cosmetologist and provides women with a complimentary makeup kit. Free Wig Programs are available to women who experience hair loss due to cancer treatment. Beautiful wigs are brand-new and 100% free to any woman in need. Many locations are available throughout Central Pennsylvania. The Reach to Recovery Program pairs a breast cancer survivor with a woman who is newly diagnosed in order to mentor and assist in their cancer journey. Other programs to assist women in overcoming cancer include the free transportation program, Road to Recovery, overnight lodging assistance at Pennsylvania’s two Hope Lodges in Hershey and Philadelphia, and access to other community resources through a national resource database. The American Cancer Society also encourages anyone with a passion for overcoming breast cancer to attend one of the area’s Making Strides Against Breast Cancer noncompetitive 5K walks. Events include, Bedford, Blair County, Lycoming County, and Greater Susquehanna Valley. Proceeds help to fund free programs for women with cancer.

Custom Closets
Get Organized! With the change of seasons this fall, you're probably craving some new outfits right about now. But before you cram one more piece of clothing in your closet, think about cleaning it up a bit. Here are a few tips to help: Use it or lose it You know it's true: there are some things in your closet that you'll never wear again. This is Jeff Ulmer, Owner the perfect time to ditch those wastes of valuable space. Try using these guidelines... • Anything with a stain that won't ever come up, regardless of what detergent you try • Anything with a hole that can't be hidden or mended • Anything that makes you think, "Ugh, I hate how this looks on me," when you actually wear it • Anything that has purely "sentimental" value (it's just a piece of clothing. You'll live without it) • Anything that will fit you just as soon as you start up that diet again
A Must Have! Jeff, The closets are wonderful! Your company slogan, "Helping you get your life well organized", is perfect. We are so pleased with your product. I have switched from being reluctant of people seeing inside my disorganized closets to showing them off! Our daughter Kristin filled her closet with her clothes and came downstairs and said, "Mom, come see my closet. It looks like a celebrity's." :) Thanks for your time, efficiency, kindness, and great product. - Cheryl
Put it away (the right way) There are lots of ways to stash your clothing, but you want to do it the right way. Even if you're working with very limited space, try to follow the following: • Store seasonal items away – give the primo space to things you actually wear • Try to maintain a balance of items - when you add something, see if there's something worn or old that you can take away • Don't hang your sweaters or knits; instead, fold them to help them retain their shape • Group similar items together (pants, jackets, etc.) to help you assemble outfits quickly
Built In Closets Walk In Closets Closet Accesories Reach In Closets Pantry Spaces Difficult Spaces Garage Organizers
Don't force it! Unless your closet has been "maximized" (something we do at Closet Plus) no amount of massaging can fit 25 feet of clothing into a 15-foot closet. If you have too many "must keep" clothes for your closet's space, stuffing everything in is not helpful - you'll only create a headache for yourself later. Instead, consider a closet organization system.

Rhinoplasty 101
Whether you love or hate your nose, there is no denying it plays a crucial part on our perception of beauty. The nose is the most prominent and protruding part of the human face, so it’s immediately noticed. It’s hardly surprising then, that cosmetic rhinoplasties, or nose reshaping surgeries, are very common cosmetic surgical procedures. According to Dr. Robert Louton of Blair Plastic Surgery, “The overall shape of your nose is formed by age 10 and it continues to grow slowly until about age 15 to 17 in women and about age 17 to 19 in men.” For this reason, plastic surgeons usually recommend that patients wait until they are at least 14 or 15, and possibly older for boys, before undergoing rhinoplasty. “While we often associate this type of surgery with a teenager who is unhappy with their nose, it is most commonly performed in the 19-34 age group. In the hands of an experienced plastic surgeon, a few millimeters of change to the nose can aesthetically rebalance the face and often improve self-confidence.” But would you believe that there’s such a thing as an aging nose? In addition to the unwanted changes seen with aging, here’s another unexpected indignity: your nose and chin keep growing after everything else has stopped. Like breasts and earlobes, noses droop because of the pull of gravity. Droopiness can be further accentuated by thickening of skin on the nose, making the nose appear even larger. “A lot of my patients seek nasal reduction in their middle years. They feel like their nose is getting bigger, or notice a bump that had not been there before”, states Dr. Louton. “Assuming good health, there is no age upper limit. I often perform rhinoplasties in conjunction with a facelift, necklift or eyelid surgery as part of a total rejuvenation package.”
is essential. All of Dr. Louton’s patients have the opportunity to view images of themselves with potential results for their “new” nose. Dr. Robert Louton has always been on the leading edge of computerized imaging. He regularly uses this type of technology to engage his patients in a thorough and meaningful discussion of expectations and possibilities. When considering a rhinoplasty, visualize your options with Dr. Robert Louton, board certified plastic surgeon and member of The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. • your nose appears too large for your face • there is a bump on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile • your nose seems too wide when viewed from the front • the nasal tip droops or plunges • the tip is thickened or enlarged • your nostrils are excessively flared • your nose is off-center or crooked • previous injury has made your nose asymmetrical Patients with sufficient physical and emotional maturity who undergo rhinoplasty because they want to enhance their self-image are usually very satisfied with their decision. Uniquely yours...Frame them with Permanent Eyeliner! Carefree and Confident. No mirror required. More than a science, Permanent Makeup is an art. If it’s eyebrows, eyeliner or lip color…. Lorie Litzinger has the skilled hand, natural ability, education and experience to perform this tedious work she has enjoyed for 11 years. At first glance of her studio, it’s clear she’s very particular and all about preciseness with her work. A recent client drove 3 hours to get to “Secrets by Lorie” in Bellefonte/Zion area. She admits she has always been insanely particular about her makeup and loved that it was equally important to Lorie that she returned home proud and pleased with her results. She did and was thrilled!
Actual Client
Lorie: It’s important to spend plenty of time discussing what I’ll be doing prior to doing anything permanent. It takes a clear understanding both ways before the procedure can begin. Some clients come in knowing exactly what they want and others want my professional and personal opinion. Each client is unique in characteristics and desires. It is a big day when it’s your permanent makeup day. I keep it personal, because it is!

Actual C
There are many reasons to invest in permanent makeup other than the obvious time savings and convenience. For many, it’s just too difficult to apply eyeliner and worry about enhancing eyebrows each day. If it’s poor eyesight or a condition that limits the use of your hands, these are common reasons people choose permanent cosmetics. Also, eyebrow thinning or loss can occur during medical treatments or with a thyroid condition. Clients believe it’s a small price to pay (usually between $300-$600) for the confidence boost and the time it saves in your everyday life. Of course not everyone wears makeup or even worries about it at all. But if you desire a shapelier brow, like the look of eyeliner or would like to enhance the color and definition of your lips, there is no fee for a personal consultation. Please visit my website. It is filled with many photos of actual clients, my credentials, client testimonials and more. I can be reached at 814-359-7867 or email

Hearing Loss Questionnaire
?
12. Do you often pretend that you hear when you really do not? 13. Do you find yourself confusing words or making silly mistakes?
The symptoms of hearing loss vary and often occur so gradually that you do not realize it is happening.
If you answered "yes" to three or more of these questions, you may want to see an audiologist for a hearing evaluation. A complete hearing evaluation is the only way to truly determine if you have a hearing impairment. Make an appointment with the Audiologist to have your hearing checked.
1. Do people complain that you turn the TV volume too high? 2. Does your hearing loss cause your family members to become frustrated when talking to you? 3. Has a friend or family member mentioned that you could have a hearing problem? 4. Do you understand men’s voices better than women’s? 5. Do voices sound blurry — like people mumble? 6. Do you have trouble hearing birds or the wind in the trees? 7. Do you have to ask people to repeat themselves frequently, even in quiet rooms? 8. Do you need to turn toward the person speaking or cup your ear to understand what is being said? 9. Do you have difficulty hearing in public gathering places – concert halls, theaters or places of worship? 10. Do you have trouble understanding conversation within a group of people? 11. Do you avoid meetings, social occasions or family gatherings where listening may be difficult or where you may feel embarrassed about misunderstanding what is being said?

Finances
For Better or For Worse… first time, IRA and Roth Income limits may come into play. For instance, let’s say a man earns $110,000 and a woman earns $110,000 and both are contributing to Roth IRAs prior to their marriage. After marriage, their level of income would prohibit them from making that same contribution because the income level cut-off for a Roth for a married couple filing jointly is $183,000. For the single taxpayer, the starting cutoff was $110,000. If available, a cost/benefit review of each spouse’s employer sponsored retirement and health insurance coverage accounts can also be useful. It might be preferable cost and benefit wise to combine coverage for health insurance under one spouse. In reviewing retirement plans, consider the matching provisions, the loan capabilities and investment options in each spouse’s plan. For example, if a spouse is not taking full advantage of an employer’s match (employer is matching 5% but the employee is only doing/getting 4%) and the other spouse doesn’t have a plan that matches, diverting contributions to the matching plan to gain the full employer match would be very advantageous for a couple. Consider adding your new spouse as the primary beneficiary on retirement assets. Typically, spouses can inherit retirement assets and keep them inside of an IRA which can be advantageous long-term.
By Judy L. Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm celebrating their 75th year and located in Centre County
October brings Halloween and cooler fall weather. Unbeknownst to me it is also the second most popular month to tie the knot (June, of course, being the first). It has been eighteen years since I married my husband so my memory of planning may be a little rusty. I recall the stress of the guest list, seating chart, dress fittings and more. The one thing that I don’t recall having a conversation about was finances. Of course, at the time, neither of us had much in the way of finances to discuss. The times are changing and brides and grooms are walking down the aisle later in life or heading into second marriages. This means they bring more assets into the marriage. It may not be romantic and it is a good idea to plan and discuss finances before the wedding. Look at it this way: if you plan on having a child with someone and/or committing to that person for the rest of your life, you better know their credit score and their spending habits. These factors before marriage can have a huge impact on what your future finances look like. First, a prenuptial agreement may be in order if one spouse is bringing more assets or children from a previous marriage into the new union. A prenup is a contract that defines what happens in the event of a separation, divorce or death. Again, not the most romantic thought before tying the knot, but consider the divorce statistics. The divorce rate for first marriages is approximately 45%, for a second marriage, it is about 60% and the third marriage divorce rate is a whopping 70% (divorceratestatistics.org). This seems a good argument for a serious look at division of assets in the event of a divorce before it becomes a factor.
Another area to consider in a new relationship is insurance. Insurance companies may offer lower premiums when pooling auto policies. Life and disability insurance may also come into play when a spouse becomes dependent on another’s income. Purchasing a home or having a child may lead to the need for higher insurance levels. Congrats to all the 2012 brides and grooms. I wish you the best in your future together.
Marriage not only means combining your wealth but combining your credit scores. My article in the last Women’s Journal went into detail on how important your credit score can be when buying a house, buying a car or even applying for insurance. A new spouse’s past credit problems can prevent you from getting credit together as a couple. This means higher interest rates when buying your dream home or purchasing a new vehicle. In addition, having separate credit cards will allow for the two individuals to continue having credit history on their own.

here’s something magical about apples — the sweetest jewel of the autumn harvest. Those jewels were part of my family’s farm heritage: apple trees lined the road to my grandfather Kyle Alexander’s farm in Julian, and harvesting apples was part of the fall farming cycle. My mother recalls picking and storing the apples in root cellars — pits dug into the ground that were lined with straw — and covering the apples with more straw to keep them fresh throughout the winter . My mother continued the apple picking tradition, bravely driving all seven of us kids to local orchards to pick apples of all kinds. Some trips we gathered apples from the ground; other times we climbed ladders and explored limbs to find the tastiest fruits. Still other trips we spent exploring the orchard’s bins, for staples like Winesap, Mutsu, Golden Delicious, and Macintosh. Once our baskets were packed, we’d rush home to peel, core and slice apples for pies. They were dessert and entrée, breakfast, lunch or dinner — cinnamon-scented apple pie piping hot from the oven. We all enjoyed returning for “seconds” on seconds — until the pie plates were empty. As many a friend learned the hard way, those who waited for the pie to cool, didn’t get any pie at all.

with your smartphone. ½ cup sugar 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 teaspoon cinnamon ¼ teaspoon nutmeg 10–20 apples, cored, peeled and thick sliced Pie crust(s) to fit 10-inch pie plate (your favorite recipe or pre-made crust)
Preheat oven to 375 degrees. To make the pie: Roll out bottom pie crust. Then mix the sugar, cornstarch, cinnamon and nutmeg in a large bowl. Toss the apples in the mixture to coat. Mound the apple mixture in the pie shell. Cover with either (a) top pie crust or (b) crumb topping. For the crumb topping, we mix together: ½ cup brown sugar, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, ½ cup ground oatmeal, and 4 Tablespoons of butter. Sprinkle over pie. Bake 50–60 minutes, until the crumb topping is brown and apples are fork tender. If you opt for a top crust, use a fork to make a happy face of steam vents; then brush with milk, sprinkle with large sugar crystals, and bake until crust is golden brown, about 50–60 minutes. Note: we always mound our apples and juice will overflow, so keep a foil-lined cookie sheet underneath the pie to minimize oven cleanup.

Real Estate
Strike While the Iron is Hot In earlier articles I have noted the favorable conditions for buyers of real estate. Factors such as historically low interest rates, abundant inventory, and a limited number of buyers all add up to ideal conditions for those who can buy. However, this once-in-alifetime window of opportunity looks as though it may be closing. After years of dropping interest rates, home values and sales it appears the pendulum is starting to swing the other way. The savvy buyer recognizes that this fall may be the best chance to get an exceptional deal.
rates will be gone. Conditions should not change drastically but the optimal time to make a purchase would seem to be in the next few months, assuming your circumstances allow it. To see if the time is right for you to buy talk to your local Realtor to see what your market has to offer, as well as your favorite bank or lender to see if you are in a position to take advantage of the exceptional opportunities in real estate these days. * Based on statistics from the Centre County Association of Realtors MLS
At the national level interest rates have begun to rise, foreclosures rates are dropping, sales have increased as well as sale prices. At the local level we have seen the days on market drop markedly, average sale prices rise, and the number of sales has increased over the same period last year *.

Based upon the natural ebb and flow of the yearly real estate cycle this fall sellers will be looking to unload their properties before the winter hits. Buyers should be able to get some good deals, in general. However, once spring arrives in 2013 you can expect prices to be at a premium and the way things look now the remarkably low interest

Tips When Hiring a Landscape Architect A well-maintained landscape is important to many homeowners. In addition to adding to a home's aesthetic appeal, a lush landscape can also help increase a home's resale value. Oftentimes, homeowners without much experience tending to lawns and gardens hire a landscape architect to do the job for them. First-time homeowners on the lookout for a landscape architect should consider the following tips to make the most of that process. • Find a professional who will work with you. Though you might not plan to do any of the landscaping or gardening, that doesn't mean you won't have a vision of what you want the property to look like. A landscape architect should be receptive to your ideas. • Look for a professional with some experience and references. A landscape architect should be ready and willing to discuss his or her previous work experience. Ask to see photos of previous work or even local addresses where you can see the finished product in person. Landscape architects without extensive work histories aren't necessarily unqualified, but homeowners should weigh the projects such architects have completed considerably. • Discuss fees and get a fee schedule. How the project will be paid for is an important thing to discuss when interviewing landscape architects. Each contractor might have a different fee structure, so you will want the one that's best suited to you. I read it in the Women’s Journal!
• Lastly, make sure the contractor is licensed. In many communities, landscape architects must be licensed. Don't wait to make your dreams a reality. Call today and schedule your estimate!

Beauty
A Perfectly Curly Head of Hair During my 35+ years in the beauty industry, I’ve never found a better way to reach clients than through stories in The Women’s Journal. So I wasn’t surprised with the very positive response I had from my article “Styling for Your Face Shape.” This article was responsible for several good conversations both in and outside of the salon.
and side length, layering, etc. are also important things to consider. The bottom line is, a designer can have everything else right. But if the style doesn’t conform to the client’s skull shape, the fit simply will not be right. This truth is most important when styling hair that naturally piles itself high and/or wide. As I often tell clients, “When I look at your face I should see a balanced, uniform head. Not a face with hair around it!”
One conversation was with a young woman who has thick, tightly curly, shoulder-length hair. She felt, due to her past experience, that my ideas do not apply to curly hair. As a curlyhaired person, I can relate. When I was a young hairdresser, I often had friends come back from hair shows or advanced design programs with a whole new hair design technique. They would cut my hair while telling me all the great things it was going to do. Unfortunately my hair always did just what curly hair does: “Round.”
By appointment only:
However, even curly hair grows from a skull shape. And if curly hair is sculpted to the shape of the skull it grows from, the resulting style will then conform to the facial shape that also extends from that skull. Bang

Deer Resistant Gardening
found in herb gardens are very unpleasant to them. Blooming perennial Monkshood, Foxglove, Rodgersia, Ligularia, Iris, Lungwort, Peonies, Hellebore and Yuccas also seem to be fairly immune, as do Yarrow, Campanula, Balloon flower and Astilbe. Clematis and Honesuckle are not preferred, and Sedums are usually safe due to their fleshy texture. Lily of Lavender the Valley, Bugleweed, Pachysandra, Sweet Woodruff, Vinca and Lamium make excellent ground covers but terrible deer food. Ornamental Grasses are fairly immune to browsing as well as great naturalizers in the landscape.
Wild creatures in our gardens are a usually a welcome sight. From scampering squirrels and chipmunk antics to singing birds, the flitting of bright butterflies and darting hummingbirds, watching these creatures evokes a sense of wonder, creating an atmosphere close to that of a fairytale. For gardeners, deer in the garden can be more like a nightmare than a sweet story about Bambi. We love them, or we hate them, and very often, both! Adult deer eat 4 to 8 pounds of food a day, so imagine the damage a herd of them visiting your yard daily for a tasty buffet can do over time. The voracious appetites of these beautifully graceful animals can wipe out a lifetime of effort and expense spent in the pursuit of a beautiful garden, with heartbreaking results for those who love their plantings.
Don’t give up your hopes of having a fantastic garden. The presence of deer in your yard shouldn’t prevent you from enjoying the beauty of nature, and you may even look forward to a glimpse of them passing through your attractive but unappetizing landscape to reach another unfortunate gardener’s deer banquet.
Fencing will work if tall enough, but 8 feet would be a minimum height to begin to be effective against these athletic jumpers.
Wrapping trunks of trees with protective mesh will protect bark, but deer will stand on their back legs to browse, giving them quite a high reach. Sprays and repellents abound but vary in effectiveness. Electronic devices that trigger sound or water spray are available, but are expensive. The real key to preventing deer damage is to remove temptation. It can’t be stressed enough that while there are many plants that deer seem to avoid and can be called ‘deer resistant’, the experienced gardener knows there is no such thing as a ‘deer proof ’ plant. Deer are opportunistic and will eat anything if they are hungry enough, especially if it is a difficult winter and food is hard to find, or due to population pressure with many animals competing for the same resources. There are enough choices on the list of deer resistant plants, however, to establish a stunning garden, and forget your deer vendetta.
Rose Campion & Larkspur
Astilbe Come to Fox Hill Gardens and ask for a more complete list of deer resistant plants. Our friendly and professional staff can help you choose the bestselections to make your landscape its most attractive to everyone - except the deer! Deer seem to avoid many native North American plants that have coevolved with them. Trees and shrubs in
this category are Birch, Walnut, Serviceberry, Oaks (though deer do relish the acorns), North American Maples, Beech, Sweet Gum, Bottlebrush Buckeye, Clethra, Elderberry, Black-eyed Susan Bayberry and Witch Hazels. They avoid many native perennials, as well: ferns of all kinds, Echinacea, Wild Columbine, Woodland Phlox, Fringed Bleeding Heart, Wood Geranium, Goat’s Beard, Snakeroot, Black-eyed Susan, Coreopsis, Liatris, Obedient Plant and others.

Flavor and texture affect food choices for deer, much as they affect human preferences. When is the last you chose to have thorns in your salad?
www.foxhillgardens.com
Deer avoid prickly shrubs and trees such as Evergreen Holly, Spruces, Junipers, Red Cedars and Barberry. They seem to ignore fragrant Cariopteris shrubs, as well as Butterfly Bush, Leucothoe, Forsythia, Boxwood, Pieris, Weigela, Broom and Spirea shrubs. Stop the Homework War!
Identifying Childhood Vision Problems When vision is an issue, reading can be frustrating. Children may lose their place in text, lean unusually close to books, confuse similar words, or even suffer headaches. Homework often takes much longer than it should. Some children with untreated vision problems simply avoid reading. Poor behavior can be a way to distract attention from academic failure. Difficulty coordinating and focusing the eyes at close range can cause text to blur or move, causing loss of place in text or trouble with comprehension. Children rarely report vision problems, however. Doesn’t everyone see that way? Since most of these children have 20/20 eyesight and healthy eyes, the problem is easy to miss...even with a medical eye examination. What can be done about functional vision problems? Sometimes subtle glasses prescriptions can help. Other times, programmed therapy is needed. Dr. Marcus Myers is an optometrist with residency certification in Vision Therapy & Rehabilitation. He practices in Muncy, PA at the Vision & Learning Center. For more information about children's vision problems, visit www.pavisionlearningcenter.com or www.covd.org.
Vision Problem Checklist • Holds books unusually • Skips lines or words in text close or far • Loses concentration with reading • Avoidance of reading • Handwriting drifts away from the line • Uses finger to mark place while reading • More trouble with small print or crowded worksheets • Fatigue or headaches in the afternoon or with reading • Confusion of small words with similar appearances
“They went through the system of telling me she had a learning disability and they had her go through the school psychologist and found no disabilities. Then they suggested she had ADHD . They wanted me to put her on medication. That’s when my husband and I decided to go off on our own and privately I went to a psychologist who evaluated all of the information that the school gave me and actually suggested that she thought there was a vision problem. (But we had been to eye doctors before), several times... and the eye doctor would see her and say she has 20/20 vision, there’s nothing wrong with her eyes... ...Every year up until this year, she would struggle, she would struggle so hard just to sit down and do her math. It would take her upwards of two hours, which probably a normal kid would take maybe 10 minutes, and this year she has it done. Now, in 15 minutes she has most of her homework done. The difference in her writing alone is just amazing...She reads at grade level. Her math is a hundred times better...She has no issues with getting her homework done in 15 minutes, whereas before is would be hours, and she would be crying...You just couldn’t go wrong with doing the vision therapy. It’s the most amazing thing you could ever do as a parent for your child...Reading on her own. Better grades and comprehension. She is just happier. Thank you so much. We really appreciate everything you have done.” ~ Michelle, Lewisburg [Michelle's daughter was referred for a vision therapy evaluation by Dr. Christie Seiler of Associates in Neuropsychology & Collaborative Healthcare in Williamsport. She was then treated for convergence insufficiency and accommodative insufficiency, eye muscle coordination problems.] I read it in the Women’s Journal!
“Many factors can mimic attention-related problems. This includes functional vision problems. Parents are usually puzzled, as they often say that the vision has been tested numerous times. However, most visual evaluations do not check for things such as eye teaming. A child may still have problems even if they have “20/20” vision. Treatment for sensory issues may result in overall improvements in a child’s behavior and emotional adjustment, showing the extensive negative impact undetected visual problems could have.” ~Dr. Christie Seiler, neuropsychologist, Williamsport

Metastatic Breast Carcinoma
(814) 946-2845
I want to tell you about a recent case that I have encountered before, but which is no less disturbing each time. This story begins with a very pleasant, cooperative female patient in her mid sixties. She had never smoked, kept her weight under control, and participated in vigorous exercise and activity. This patient came to my attention when, on route to an examination, her family physician could not hear good breathe sounds in the upper portion of her right lung. She had been having a small, annoying cough for several months which she thought was probably related to the weather, or perhaps some allergies. Rather than ignore her symptoms, her family physician ordered a chest x-ray, which was abnormal. A CT scan of the chest followed and it was determined that the opening to the right upper lobe of her lung was obstructed. She was referred to a pulmonary specialist, and she underwent a fiber-optic bronchoscopic procedure as an out-patient. This study allows the examiner to look inside the airways. It is usually tolerated very well and provides valuable information. Biopsies were taken from the obstructed airway and were sent for analysis. The report was breast cancer. This patient had a radical mastectomy 22 years prior and was followed carefully for all of this time. At first, she did not believe the diagnosis, but a second pathologic opinion was convincing. A course of chemotherapy resolved the endobronchial obstruction without recurrence for the last twelve months. The important information is that a number of solid tumors can spread (metastasize) to the lining of our airways. The most common tumors to do this are colon, kidney, and breast. I have encountered each of these, and others over my years of practice. Breast cancer is the most common solid tumor to metastasize to the airway lining, or endobronchium. Airway spread may occur many years after the initial occurrence and the patient is often initially thought to have a second primary tumor. The most common symptoms include cough, hoarseness, and focal wheezing which can be heard when examining the chest. The chest x-ray may initially appear normal and collection of sputum to look for cancer cells is usually not very helpful. A fiber-optic bronchoscopy inspection of the airways is needed. The optimal therapy for any given patient may vary. The longer the period from the discovery of the primary tumor to the discovery of the airway metastasis is a favorable clinical factor. The takeaway message for breast cancer survivors is that problems may occur many years, even decades, following the initial discovery and treatment. Do not ignore any new, persistent symptoms, no matter how long you have been disease free.

In the Truth Itself, There Is Healing ~Ellen Bass
...a place for hope & healing
disorders, substance abuse, suicidal thoughts, difficulty in relationships, and intimacy.
If you endured sexual abuse as a child it may be difficult to believe Bass' quote. As a child, to speak the truth of your abuse you may have felt it equaled fear, guilt, shame, embarrassment, and humiliation. You may have worried that no one would believe you or, even worse, that possibly you would be blamed. The fear of the potential consequences in speaking the truth helped to seal many false messages: It is my fault, I am guilty, I asked for the violation on my body, I am dirty, I do not matter. All of these negative assumptions may have become your inner belief about yourself; they may have become your false truth.
The prevalence of child sexual abuse in our nation is alarming. Nationwide statistics show that 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before the age of 18. It is believed that because of the pervasive shameful feelings associated with being violated, the prevalence is under-reported and, therefore, the true statistics are even higher.
The damaging messages a child receives and believes the moment the violating touch is felt are sealed into their heart and the burden begins to be carried. Over time, this burden becomes heavier and heavier and the pervasive shame-based messages may leave the now- adult survivor feeling isolated, alone, and frightened. The scars carried by the soul can lead to several problems such as: depression, anxiety, anger, eating
There comes a time when the adult survivor wants to say “ENOUGH,” to release the shame, shed their soul of the shame-based feelings, reclaim their innocence and pureness. How is this done? How does one shed the shame? How does one find freedom from the sorrow in the surviving heart? Speaking the truth, the one action the survivor feared as a child, is the key to unlocking the door of inner freedom. To do this may feel
Child sexual abuse has been a problem for generations, it is nothing new. What is new is that survivors are finding their voices and taking their power back. Secrecy and silence are no longer acceptable.
scary, difficult, almost impossible. It takes courage to speak the truth; the same courage one used to endure the abuse is the very courage the survivor needs to find healing. At Turning Point Women's Counseling and Advocacy Center you are not alone. Our trained staff will walk along with you on your healing journey. There is healing in sharing your story and connecting with other survivors. We offer individual therapy, group therapy, art therapy, group art therapy and sand tray therapy. These different modalities are available to help you heal and discover your voice. If you are reading this and you are a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, please know your story matters and that you matter. At Turning Point we want to help you find your voice and we want to hear your story. Turning Point: a place for hope, a place of safety, a place to release the burden of shame. It is a place that will help you on your journey towards wholeness, towards reclaiming your innocence, a place to help you heal for good. You are not alone anymore. We welcome you.
I am the founder of Turning Point Women's Counseling and Advocacy Center and I am a survivor of childhood sexual abuse. I know what it feels like to feel dirty, ashamed and guilt ridden; what it feels like to believe my abuse was all my fault. I worked very hard to reframe my mindset of being a victim to being a survivor. My dream of creating a safe, therapeutic environment dedicated to women survivors of childhood sexual abuse, a healing center where a woman can share her story, shed her shame and begin her healing journey has come to fruition. I would be honored to help you begin taking the steps towards healing. I invite you to visit the center and allow me to give you a personal tour. Kristen E. Woolley, R.N., B.S.N, M.S.W. Kristen received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from West Virginia University and her Masters of Social Work from University of Maryland. In addition to being a registered nurse and licensed social worker she holds post graduate certificates in addictions counseling and child sexual abuse treatment. Health
Laying the Foundation for Lasting Weight Loss & Health One way to improve your health is to eat real whole foods that improve your digestion, and encourage weight loss. Eating correctly is important, but digesting and assimilating what we eat is just as important. Processed, devitalized, bleached, convenience foods (“foods of commerce”) place a huge demand on the digestive system. For health and lasting weight loss to be maintained a strong digestive system is essential. Do you have any of these symptoms of digestive dysfunction? 1. heartburn, 2. constipation, 3. fatigue, poor sleep, 4. reduced mental clarity, 5. gas shortly after eating, 6. pass large amounts of foul smelling gas, 7. low libido, 8. candida, 9. headaches, 10. chronic stuffy nose, 11. feeling bloated after meals, 12. bad breath. One way to start improving your digestion is to do a purification. A purification can help you remove toxins from your body, improve digestion, and help maintain a healthy weight. Although your body is designed to rid itself of these toxins naturally, it can easily become overburdened if your diet consists of “foods of commerce.” A purification offers your body additional support to expel natural toxins and minimize your weight. Weight loss is difficult or impossible if your digestion is dysfunctional. The 21-day Standard Process purification program uses wholefood supplements, whole organic and unprocessed food, and water to cleanse the body so that you can have more energy, maintain a healthy
weight, and improve your digestion. Purifying the body can improve digestion, health, and weight loss. At Optimal Wellness I can help you heal poor digestion, purify and reclaim your ability to lose weight, and feel good. An eating plan is provided, along with a shopping guide and a list of local farmers where you can purchase healthy whole foods that support good health. That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?
EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos. 1. Permanent makeup Corrections. 2. Unwanted Name. 3. Gang Related tattoos. 4. Tattoo markings for radiation. 5. Tattoo redsign. 6. Impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? Through a specially formulated process, Eliminink "bonds" with all permanent makeup pigments and tattoo ink, thereby resulting in a tattoo removal procedure that is noncolor dependent, unlike that of a laser, which is color dependent. This, in turn, greatly increases the potential for successful tattoo removal and decreases the overall number of treatment sessions required (as compared to what is frequently required when using the laser technique). The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

Give Your Kids Something to Look Forward To
Teaching children proper oral hygiene at a young age is a lifelong investment in their health. Tooth decay or dental caries affect more children in the United States then any other disease. Tooth decay and other oral diseases that can affect children are preventable.
one. Take your child at least twice per year for checkups; more frequently if he is having problems with her teeth. Teaching children to brush twice a day as recommended by the American Dental Association with fluoride toothpaste, along with bringing them to the dentist for regular checkups encourage proper oral hygiene. If cavities are left untreated tooth decay causes pain and infections. This can lead to problems such as eating, speaking, playing and learning. At Carnicella & Associates, we making coming to the dentist a fun experience for children. Kids Day at Carnicella & Associates is a day full of fun and excitement! Four times a year we devote an entire day to seeing only kids. Not only do they get a cleaning, but they also get to have fun with different activities and prizes to be won. Each Kids Day has a theme depending on the time of the year from dressing up at Halloween, to summertime luau’s, and spring time egg hunts. Kids Day offers a chance for Dr. Carnicella and her staff to show kids that coming to the dentist can be a good time. There is always something fun and amazing at Kids Day! Please call now to reserve your spot for October!
So educate your child on good dental routines early on in his life.
Toothbrush Timer. It takes about two or three minutes to thoroughly brush your teeth. Buy your child a toothbrush that comes equipped with a timer to assure that he is brushing for more than just a few seconds. Some toothbrushes come with a light that blinks, when it stops they know they have brushed for the correct amount of time. Incentives. Reward your child when he does things that will contribute to his overall dental health. For instance, if he flosses, brushes his teeth for the full three minutes every morning and night for a week, and eats a carrot instead of a lollipop, reward him with a gift or just give plenty of positive reinforcement. After a while, the child’s commitment to dental care will likely become a matter of habit, even after the incentives are no longer there. Dental Visits. The earlier you start your child’s routine of going to the dentist, the more likely he will be to continue the habit into adulthood. If your dentist allows, bring your child to see you in the chair to deminstrate there is nothing to be afraid of at the dentist! The first dentist visit should be at the age of
