Finances

What’s Your Number? By Judy L. Loy, ChFC® and CEO of Nestlerode & Loy, Inc., an investment firm celebrating their 75th year and located in Centre County

is important to keep your oldest credit card open as it will give you the longest credit history. Opening new credit accounts can damage your score in two ways: it shortens the average length of your credit history and adds negatively to your New Credit Section which is 10% of your credit score. The reports will look at how many requests for credit you have made recently and that can damage your score. Having a healthy mix of credit is also a 10% contributor to your credit score. A person paying on time on credit cards, installment loans and a mortgage loan will reach a higher score than one with just a credit card. However, this does not mean you open credit account that you don’t need. It does mean that if you buy a car make your payments on time. Another important note: if you are married, make sure you have one credit card in your name alone if possible. Having all your credit as joint can lead to issues in getting your own loan someday. Other than a FICO score, some lenders will look at your income, how long you worked at your present job and how long you stayed at one residence. Banks want to know that you have a steady job and income and want to be sure they will be able to find you if they need a payment. Finally, just as watching your weight and food intake can help lead to a healthy lifestyle and waistline, keeping an eye on your credit score can help you have a healthy financial situation. To get your score, here are the three agencies and their contact information: Equifax: (800) 685-1111 www.equifax.com Experian (888) 397-3742 www.experian.com TransUnion (800) 888-4213 www.transunion.com Checking your number and the accuracy of at least one report a year is advisable. Check your credit score at least six months before you are thinking of taking a loan so you can request corrections for errors or alter your score with some of the tips above.

Throughout life, we tend to define ourselves and others by our numbers. It starts with the ‘terrible twos,’ hits the ‘tweens’, and moves on to ‘sweet sixteen’. We might focus on a GPA, a salary, a batting average, or a retirement age. My current number of interest is the last ten pounds that I am looking to lose. Recently, a lot of numbers came up in the Loy household when we were looking to refinance our mortgage. Many of our numbers were reviewed by the bank, such as W-9 forms, check stubs and, most importantly, our credit scores. When facing lenders, credit scores are a key determiner of your credit risk and thus whether you will get a loan and how good your terms will be (interest rate). In this article, I want to help you know what a credit score is, why it is important and what you can do to improve it. Let’s start with defining a credit score. Typically, that number is your FICO score, which is named for the software developed by Fair Isaac and Company. A FICO score can range from 300 to 850, with 760 to 850 giving you the best credit terms. A level from 620 to 639 puts you in the high risk category and makes it very difficult to get a loan. Your FICO score is actually three scores from three different reporting agencies, Equifax, Experian and TransUnion. A bank or lender will use one of these numbers to determine your credit worthiness (whether they should loan you money). A credit score not only affects your interest rates on credit cards, mortgages, etc. but also is used by insurance companies. Because independent researchers determined a link between credit history and insurance claims, the correlation is strong enough that an insurer can cancel or refuse to renew a policy based on your credit history in some states. What are some things that affect your credit score? The most important influencer of your credit score is your payment history. There is one sure thing you can do to keep your score high or to increase it, and that is to pay all of your bills on time. Payment history is 35% of your FICO score. If you have a hard time remembering to write a check, put bills on auto-pay through your bank or credit card. 30% of a credit score is derived from amounts owed. A large number of accounts with balances can indicate a higher risk of overextension. FICO will also look at how much is still owed compared with the original loan amounts. Therefore, if you bought a car for $14,000 with a $2,000 down payment and now the loan is at $5,000, it shows a willingness to pay off debt responsibly. The reports will also look at your credit history length, which is 15% FICO. This is why it July / August 2012

da Vinci®... Changing the Experience of Surgery at Mount Nittany Health If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with a condition that may require surgery, you owe it to yourself to learn about all of your medical options, including the most effective, least invasive surgical treatment available: The da Vinci® Surgical System. da Vinci provides surgeons with an alternative to both traditional, or “open” surgery, and conventional laparoscopy (minimally invasive surgery), putting a surgeon’s hands at the controls of a state-of-the-art robotic platform. With this technology, surgeons are able to perform even the most complex and delicate procedures through very small incisions with unmatched precision. For the patient, benefits may include: • Less scarring • Shorter recovery time • A faster return to normal daily activities • Better clinical outcomes, in most cases Our trained da Vinci surgeons are skilled in the following specialties: Gynecologic Surgery LEFT TO RIGHT | Howard Miller, MD | Shreya Patel, MD, FACOG Angela Hardyk, MD, FACOG | J. Frederick Doucette, MD, FACOG

For many years, traditional open surgery has been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. For women facing gynecologic surgery, the period of pain, discomfort and extended time away from normal daily activities that usually follows traditional surgery can understandably cause significant anxiety.

A new category of surgery, introduced with the development of the da Vinci Surgical System, is being used by an increasing number of surgeons worldwide for prostatectomy and other urologic procedures. This minimally invasive approach, utilizing the latest in surgical and robotics technologies, is ideal for delicate urologic surgery. This includes prostatectomy, in which the target site is not only tightly confined but also surrounded by nerves affecting urinary control and sexual function. Using da Vinci, the surgeon has a better tool to spare surrounding nerves, which may enhance both the patient’s recovery experience and clinical outcomes.

Fortunately, less invasive options are available. For hysterectomies and other gynecologic procedures, robotically assisted surgery with the da Vinci Surgical System may be the most effective, least invasive treatment option. Through tiny incisions, surgeons using the da Vinci System can operate with greater precision and control, minimizing the pain and risk associated with large incisions while increasing the likelihood of a fast recovery and excellent clinical outcomes. Urologic Surgery

For more information about da Vinci robotically assisted surgery, visit mountnittany.org/daVinci or consult your physician.

When medication and other non-surgical treatments are either unavailable or cannot relieve symptoms, surgery can be an accepted treatment for a broad range of conditions that affect the male reproductive organs and the organs of the urinary tract.

Penn Stater overcomes eating disorder, wins adult student award By Deborah A. Benedetti

“As an adult student, Alison Franklin has successfully juggled family, parttime work and volunteer activities with being a full-time student,” said Leslie A. Laing, coordinator of Adult Learner Programs, Division of Student Affairs, and organizer of the annual adult learner recognition program. “Alison is truly an asset to our community.” Franklin’s academic adviser James Howell, toxicology program coordinator in the College of Agricultural Sciences, nominated her for the award. He said, “Alison’s academic performance has been all but perfect (GPA 3.97) in some of the most specialized and challenging courses at the University.” When Franklin re-enrolled at Penn State, she designed a hybrid ecotoxicology curriculum for her degree that has become a template for other students to use. She graduated with a bachelor of science degree in toxicology in May and will start graduate school this fall in the College of Agricultural Sciences’ soil sciences program. Franklin said, “My ultimate goal is to determine how chemicals and drugs move in soil systems in order to determine the risk they pose to humans and wildlife.”

Alison Franklin receives the Outstanding Adult Student Award at Penn State’s University Park campus, presented by Leslie A. Laing (right). Husband Don and daughters Evelyn (left) and Grace helped Alison celebrate the award.

As part of the Outstanding Adult Student Award program, Franklin received a Penn State diploma case and a $500 grant from the Penn State Adult Learner Opportunity Fund. To contribute online to this fund, visit https://secure.ddar.psu.edu/GiveTo and in the drop-down box enter “XXTOF Adult Learner Opportunity Fund.”

Alison Franklin was third in her Weatherly, Pennsylvania, high school class in 1998 and headed to a promising Penn State career. But dealing with anorexia and bulimia forced her to withdraw from Penn State in 2003. Meeting her future husband, marrying, and becoming pregnant were a wake-up call. Franklin worked diligently on her recovery and re-enrolled at Penn State in 2009. For her tenacity in overcoming her health challenge, and for her academic success, Franklin has been honored with the 2012 Penn State Outstanding Adult Student Award.

The Outstanding Adult Student Award is sponsored by Penn State’s Division of Student Affairs Adult Learner Programs and Penn State Outreach’s Admission Services and Adult Learner Advocacy. The Adult Learner Programs unit provides comprehensive services for nontraditional undergraduate students that complement learners’ academic, personal, and career goals. Admission Services and Adult Learner Advocacy extends and enhances services to Penn State adult students. This unit is part of Penn State Outreach, the largest unified outreach organization in American higher education, which serves more than 5 million people each year, delivering more than 2,000 programs to people in all sixty-seven Pennsylvania counties, all fifty states, and 115 countries worldwide.

“I always wanted to be perfect,” said Franklin, 32, who lives in Centre Hall with husband Don and Grace, 5, and Evelyn, 3. “I was restricting what I ate, then it changed to bulimia, and my life spiraled out of control. It makes me sad that I wasted so much time, but those eleven years also made me who I am today: a strong, confident, capable woman.” The award recognizes an exceptional adult learner at Penn State’s University Park campus who has begun or resumed his or her education after the age of 24, after being out of high school for four or more years, and who demonstrates initiative in overcoming obstacles to furthering that education, while serving as a role model for other adult learners, achieving academic excellence, and contributing to his or her community.

Breast Cancer, What Do I Do First? We have opened the Breast Cancer Institute of Central Pennsylvania for just this reason. To get women with possible breast cancer the answers they desire quickly. We then supply them with the proper information so they can make informed decisions about this very common and often misunderstood disease. If you have a new breast cancer or a suspicious breast finding, I would be honored to help you through this difficult time. David Arbutina, MD, FACS is a governor of the American College of Surgeons and the current President of its Keystone Chapter. His surgical practice has been focused on breast cancer since 1988 and he has been involved in research and education about this topic for 24 years.

One in eight women will be told sometime during their life that they have breast cancer. In many cases, this message sends an initial wave of fear which results in a state of confusion. They cannot even begin to know what to do next. I’m certain that most women are acquainted in some way with somebody that has died from breast cancer. But if only they knew the facts, they would realize a diagnosis of breast cancer is not a death sentence. In the vast majority of cases, breast cancer is cured by treating only the breast with minimal breast conserving procedures. The Surveillance Epidemiology End Result (SEER) data from the National Cancer Institute point out the facts about breast cancer very clearly. Today, the majority of women diagnosed with breast cancer, 60%, have disease which is confined to the breast. This is stage 1 breast cancer. And based on SEER data gathered from 2005 to 2009 it was found that with breast cancer confined to the breast the 5 year survival is 98.4%. Even with regional breast cancer that involves the lymph nodes (stage 2) the SEER data demonstrates an 83.9% five year survival. The data show that 33% of the women have this regional stage 2 disease. The data shows that only 5% of women present with metastatic breast cancer that has spread to other parts of their body. The key is to catch it early. This means annual mammograms and monthly self breast exams. So what does a woman do first when confronted with this diagnosis? You go to a surgeon who is well versed on breast cancer and its overall treatment. The initial surgery should be geared to not only tell what stage the breast cancer is, but also perform the surgical treatment for that breast cancer. The surgery can be accomplished within several hours and the majority of women will walk away assured that they have only a 1.6% chance of dying from that particular breast cancer if they follow their surgeons advice about radiation and possibly hormonal therapy. To do any additional test prior to pathologic staging can only lead to additional pain and substantial expense. If the breast cancer is a higher stage then additional tests may indeed be necessary. However, based on sound statistical data in most cases of breast cancer these additional tests are not indicated.

David R. Arbutina, M.D., F.A.C.S presents

“The Myths of Breast Cancer” July 16th from 11:30-12:30 and July 26th from 6PM-7PM both at Altoona Public Library.

David Arbutina MD (center), chats with women from the community about the new Women's Health Institute. I read it in the Women’s Journal!

The AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill - It’s out of this world! As the owner and physical therapist at Action Therapy Clinic in State College, PA I am asked many questions about our anti-gravity treadmill. This amazing piece of equipment is an excellent rehabilitation tool for many types of patients. The most frequently asked question is... How does it work? The AlterG utilizes technology developed by NASA called differential air pressure to comfortably unweight the body so that walking, running and exercises can be performed at a decreased load. The patient enters the treadmill and a bubble-type chamber inflates up to the hips. Body weight is calibrated. In precise 1% increments weight bearing is reduced, taking up to 80% of the load off the lower body. The AlterG allows for normal gait mechanics and muscle firing , unlike some other systems that utilize harnesses or water. What can the Alter-G be used for? Post -op patients can rehabilitate from surgery with less pain and progress more quickly back to function. Because of the bubble-type chamber of air, the elderly population can exercise in the AlterG without fear of falling, making it a great tool for stroke patients, Parkinson’s patients and other neurologically compromised people. Athletes with strains, sprains or stress fractures

can maintain and improve their training while recovering from injury. By unweighting the lower body , overweight patients can feel what it is like to exercise at their target weight and save some pressure on their joints. FDAcleared uses of the AlterG Anti-Gravity Treadmill include: Rehabilitation following injury or surgery of the lower extremity (hip, knee, ankle, foot); Rehabilitation after total joint replacement; Gait training in neurologic patients; Strengthening and conditioning in older patients; Sportspecific conditioning programs; Aerobic conditioning The AlterG is a chosen tool of leading physical therapy clinics, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, colleges and pro sports teams. Action Therapy Clinic is one of only a few physical therapy clinics in Pennsylvania currently offering this advanced technology for rehabilitative care. How can I utilize the Alter-G? Action Therapy Clinic is located at 620 West Cherry Lane in State College, PA 16803. Call us at 814.238.8800 to schedule an evaluation. We participate with most health insurance plans and because we are a direct access provider, you do not need a physician referral to make an appointment. Fungus Creates Foot Frustrations! Many are horrified to find that their toenails are yellow, discolored and thickened after taking off our summer polish! In the majority of cases, the discoloration and thickening is due to a fungal infection of the nail and nail bed. The nails also can become rough and crumbly, or can separate from the nail bed. Twenty three million people are affected by nail fungus in the United States. Many well known therapies are costly with poor results. Laser Light Therapy in now available, and clinical studies show it kills nail fungus for a majority of patients. How does the nail fungus laser work? A toenail fungus laser works by shining a focused beam of light into a toenail infected with fungus. The laser penetrates the toenail and vaporizes fungus embedded in the nail bed and nail plate where toenail fungus exists. Is nail laser treatment painful? The focused, targeted laser light beam will have no effect on healthy tissue and will only target the infected areas. A patient should experience no discomfort. There is no need to suffer. there now is a solution to treating thick, discolored nails, laser light therapy. This treatment has been shown to effectively treat onychomycosis (toenail fungus) in clinical and in-office trials, and uses invisible infrared beams to safely treat fungal nails with no pain or adverse side effects. Unlike current oral medications used to treat nail fungus, laser light therapy requires no liver testing and is safe for most diabetics and pregnant women. ad_BeWellAssoc_jun12_+ 5/30/12 8:12 PM Page 1

From 3-6 pm on that same day, the Weis Center will host an Open House, including behind-the-scenes tours, refreshments, and an Instrument Petting Zoo. Weis Center for the Performing Arts Welcomes New Director and Embraces New Programming

The world around us is moving faster and faster and the noise is getting louder and louder. We're being bombarded constantly with information— e-mail, voice mail, texts, Facebook, Twitter, CNN, smart phones, newspapers. Yet with all of this information and all of this noise, I hear from more and more women who are feeling isolated and lost. The truth is we're less and less in touch with the most important information we need in order to live rich, healthy and fulfilling lives . . . and that's the conversation we need to have with our selves. And we can only begin the conversation when we give ourselves the greatest gift of all . . . rest and quiet. A special way to give yourself the gift of quiet and rest this summer is with a personal retreat. This simple choice is your magic pathway to peace and joy and freedom.

Business

Piecing Your Marketing Plan Together Social Media.

Provided By The Women's Journal

Network by attending your local chamber meetings or industry events. Your website is really an electronic brochure; you must optimize your site. Facebook, Twitter and Linkedin give you opportunities to market your brand. The Women’s Journal uses these tools and its online digital version to connect with readers.

Many business owners today are overwhelmed about how to increase their market share using different types of media. I like to refer to this as a “puzzle” because each business is different in what will work for them and what is best for their business. Just because one business is using a person standing on the street with a sign doesn’t mean the same tactic will work for you. Effective marketing is vital to the success of any business, whether it is a one-person or a Fortune 500 company. The driving force for every revenue dollar is marketing.

These are just several pieces of the puzzle; in reality, “marketing” is anything and everything you do to attract, engage, retain or motivate customers and it encompasses everything that in anyway impacts the customer experience, at any touch point. And therefore, everyone within your company is “in” marketing.

Imagine if I gave you a bag of puzzle pieces and asked you to put them together. What would help you? Maybe if I gave you a picture of the finished puzzle you would be able to put it together. In other words, you need to know what you are trying to accomplish in order to plan how to get there. By putting your own puzzle together and by planning what the result would look like is your marketing plan. Most of it really goes back to your business plan. What is your one year, five year and ten year vision?

By cultivating a customer-centric mindset, a “marketing mindset” if you will, everything affects the customer perception about your business, for better or for worse. If you’re ready to use all of these methods and build an organization where each member of your team seeks to provide the best possible experience for customers at each and every touch point, Hurrah! You get it! Take time to revisit the mission and vision of your company. Working with staff, create a customer bill of rights and ask staff members to commit to upholding it. Make sure that each member of your team understands how the role that they play impacts the customer experience and how it specifically works toward fulfillment of your corporate mission and vision statement. Tie incentives and evaluations to the customer experience. Solicit customer feedback. Embrace change and continuous improvement.

Whom are you trying to target? Are you developing your brand and identifying your competitors? What are your advantages in the marketplace? Your message must capture attention and identify problems, needs and wants. You must also describe your product or service; tell them the benefits and value. Your message must give credibility and include a “call to action.” Before you begin investing money in your marketing efforts, be sure you take the time to define what you want your final picture to look like. Then you can begin solving your puzzle one piece at a time. There is also confusion between many terms (puzzle pieces) that are used in marketing. The following may help explain the differences.

Remember Marketing is Everything and Everything is Marketing!

Advertising.

Reaching a target audience through a particular medium; putting an ad in The Women’s Journal or your local newspaper, a storefront sign, radio ad or direct mail.

Branding.

Your brand is the source of a promise to your consumer and is intended to identify the goods and services of one seller to differentiate them from other sellers. If you write articles in our magazine, consistently use the same logo/ad while delivering your message clearly, confirm your credibility with testimonials, and connect your target market emotionally, you are building a brand. It’s a foundational piece in your marketing puzzle.

Call our marketing and advertising consultants today. Let them help you review your marketing plan!

Public Relations.

Once you have created your brand, you need to get your message to the public. Examples may include press releases, letters to the editor, seminars or speaking engagements. The Women’s Journal sponsors many local non-profit events; this is the public relations piece of our marketing. July / August 2012

What Is a Trust? the features my dad thought I needed, and I couldn’t have been happier with my investment. As I said, I know nothing about cars; however, my dad does. He is comfortable around cars. He routinely fixes cars and is constantly tinkering with vehicles of all shapes and sizes. That is the key . . . If you don’t know much about something, then find someone who does and ask that person’s advice. If you want to protect your assets from creditors and long-term care costs, create a lasting legacy, minimize taxes, and/or provide for a person who has special needs, a trust may be your best option; so talk with an attorney that is comfortable with and knowledgeable about trusts. If you asked me today if the color of my car is important, I would tell you that it is not. What is important about my car is that it gets me where I need to go; after all, that’s why I bought the car. When winter comes and I need to go somewhere, the color of my car isn’t what gets me there. My dad was right; I need the 4-wheel drive to get me where I want and need to be. Call us to schedule your FREE consultation to discuss your wealth protection goals and how a trust might achieve those goals and give you peace of mind.

By: Samantha K. Wolfe, Esquire, LL.M. in Taxation Like so many things in life, trusts get a bad name because they are misunderstood. Is a trust a nebulous concept which can be difficult to understand? Sure. Does the creation of a trust take thought and planning? Sure. Are some people confused about how to properly draft a trust? Sure. Talking about a trust is like talking about a car. There many different types of trusts so saying that you have a trust is like saying that you have a car. It really doesn’t tell a person much. I grew up on a farm, and when I decided to go off to the big city for college, my dad decided I needed to buy a reliable car. Dad and I went car shopping together. Honestly, I didn’t know much about cars but there were certain features I thought I needed in my new vehicle, and as I’m sure you guessed, the things I thought I needed were not the things my dad thought I needed. For example, I always thought a sun roof would be really cool so I wanted a sun roof in my new car. On the other hand, my dad couldn’t have cared less about the sun roof. He thought I needed something really practical like 4-wheel drive. I thought I needed a good stereo system. My dad thought I needed power locks with a feature that triggered the car doors to lock when I started the car. I thought I needed a pretty color for my new car. My dad thought I needed a car that sat high enough off the ground that when driving in heavy traffic I could hold my own against the big tractor trailers. I despise sitting on cold car seats so I thought I needed heated leather seats. My dad thought I needed airbags. Needless to say, I have a 4-wheel drive SUV with power locks . . . although I did get the heated seats. What I have learned since my car shopping experience with my dad is that like buying a car, establishing a trust is specific to a person’s goals. Once you decide what you want to accomplish in buying the vehicle or establishing the trust, the process becomes much easier. When I meet with clients, there are some common goals that clients mention: (1) protecting assets from creditors, (2) planning for long-term care, (3) creating a lasting legacy, (4) minimizing federal estate and income taxes, (5) planning for retirement, and/or (6) providing for a person who has special needs. Sometimes multiple trusts are used to achieve the client’s goals or one trust is used to achieve all of the goals. A trust, if properly drafted, should achieve all of your objectives and offer you as much flexibility as possible. Despite what people think, trusts can offer simplicity, flexibility, and predictability. As I mentioned, I ultimately bought a vehicle that included all of I read it in the Women’s Journal!

Organization By Lynn Morrow

Finding Your Desktop various legal requirements that pertain to this set of files. The third set of files will be determined by your business or office. These files could be your customers, clients, inventory, research materials – anything needed to run your business. These files need to be organized by type of information, i.e. clients’ files from inventory files. The fourth set of files are the storage files. These files are not current but need to be retained for financial or legal reasons. I recommend placing these files in bank storage boxes (heavy cardboard boxes sized for business or legal files). List the contents of the box on the outside. Record the date for disposal if the files do not need to be kept indefinitely. Many of the items on your desk will be addressed by what was done with your daily incoming correspondence. The time used now will be saved later.

What do you do with your incoming mail and correspondence? Your goal is to sort, file or recycle every item. Start with the magazines and catalogs. Keep the catalogs pertaining to your business. These should be alphabetized and stored on a shelf or in magazine rack. New issues should replace the old issues which can be recycled. Magazines should be stored by title and in chronological order. Only keep magazines in your office which apply to your job or business. All other magazines and catalogs need to be recycled. All invoices received in the mail or in person need to be placed in a file. Store them by due date with the most current date on top. This file should have easy acces and be obvious so bills are not forgotten. The other incoming paperwork will fall into two main groups. Obvious junk mail – recycle. The other group is everything else. This is where your filing system comes into play. If something is not recycled or shredded, it needs to be filed or shelved. I recommend four types of files. One set of files should contain all the financial information for your office or business. This would include all your invoices, banking, tax reports, legal information and anything else your accountant would need for taxes. The second set of files would pertain to your employees. Seeking Help for Life's Challenges “My depression stemmed from my inability to control my binging and purging,” said the young woman sitting in group. “I hated how my body looked” she continued, “but I couldn’t stop sneaking and eating whole boxes of cookies or gallons of ice cream. I didn’t feel so bad about myself when I purged.” Added Sarah S., “My life felt out of control, the only thing I could control was what I put in my body. The number on the scale was never low enough. Once I learned how to accept myself exactly as I am, then I could begin working on my eating disorder.” Sarah continued, “When I left Magnolia Creek, I was referred to Life Counseling Services. One-Stop Service

Identity Protection 101 Colleen Small and the UPS Store across from Wegmans share their expertise and tips when it comes to protecting your identity. It’s a frightening reality that by time you have finished reading this article, 120 identities have already been stolen somewhere in the United States. Once stolen, it can take an average of 600 hours of personal time for the victim to recover losses, and in some cases it can even take longer. With the risk greater than ever, I wanted to offer my top five tips for effective identity theft protection. 1) Protect your Social Security number-Don't carry your Social Security card in your wallet or write your Social Security number on a check. Give your Social Security number only when absolutely necessary, and ask to use other types of identifiers. If your state uses your Social Security number as your driver's license number, ask to substitute another number. 2) Make passwords intricate and unique. –Place passwords on your credit card, bank, and phone accounts. Avoid using easily available information like your mother's maiden name, your birth date, the last four digits of your Social Security number or your phone number, a series of consecutive numbers, or a single word that would appear in a dictionary. Combinations of letters, numbers, and special characters make the strongest passwords.

Identity Protection Services at The UPS Store.

3) Treat your trash carefully.-To thwart an identity thief who may pick through your trash or recycling bins to capture your personal information, always shred your charge receipts, copies of credit applications, insurance forms, physician statements, checks and bank statements, expired charge cards that you're discarding, and credit offers you get in the mail.

4) Secure mail management. -Deposit your outgoing mail containing personally identifying information in post office collection boxes or at the UPS Store rather than in an unsecured mailbox. When receiving mail, promptly remove it from your mailbox. If you're planning to be away from home and can't pick up your mail, contact the U.S. Postal Service to request a vacation hold. I strongly recommend ditching the traditional Mailbox/ PO box and consider signing up for the mail receiving services at the UPS Store. It’s completely secure and you’ll never have to worry about the risk of mail fraud or package theft. 5) Use common sense. This final tip may be the most important of all. Whenever you are in doubt about the safety of your identity, react and do something about. Whether it’s sporadically changing your email password, checking your credit report or simply requiring a signature-collection on your IRS forms… keeping an open eye is the best way to avoid theft. If an offer seems to good to be true, that’s because it probably is. Don’t just take my advice as a professional that helps small business owners keep their identity safe, take it from someone who ‘s had their identity taken. The Cafe on the Park

Grab ‘N’ Go or Leisurely Casual Dining

A Taste of Summer from Café on the Park by Kim Kowalczyk Once June arrives, I find myself yearning for the sizzle of mid-summer heat, the intoxicating scents of fresh garden produce, and the smell of outdoor grilling. It also bring back sensory yearnings for the “old days” when we lived in the heart of Texas. There summer and growing seasons seemed endless, as did the supply of fresh seafood, sun tea, and tomatoes warm from the garden. My favorites: fresh salsa at every meal, and corn tortilla chips serving up bites of buttery melt-in-yourmouth avocado, with hints of tangy lemon, chopped onion, and cilantro. You can indulge your taste for some of this “fresh” summery Tex Mex at one our monthly Fiesta dinners, or you can treat yourself at home with the following family recipes. My favorite easy summer meal: salsa and shrimp boil — a joyous celebration of tender, melt-in-yourmouth, sweet yet salty, delicate bites of freshly caught shrimp, perfectly seasoned with lemons, sweet corn, and Old Bay. It was a feast! To recreate this glorious taste of summer, and the ambience of the Gulf coast setting, cover your table with newspaper. When you’re finished with your feast, it’s easy clean up! Just roll and toss. For the salsa, use equal parts of : corn, chopped (seeded) tomato, cilantro, avocado, onion and a healthy squeeze of lemon. For the shrimp boil, plan on 6-8 oz. of unpeeled raw shrimp per person (I prefer the 16-18 shrimp per pound size), one potato per person, and an ear of corn per person. While my recipe is for a large block party, you can use the recipe as a starting point. Experiment with seasonings.

What is MS?

Multiple sclerosis (or MS) is a chronic, often disabling disease that attacks the central nervous system (CNS), which is made up of the brain, spinal cord, and optic nerves. Symptoms may be mild, such as numbness in the limbs, or severe, such as paralysis or loss of vision. The progress, severity, and specific symptoms of MS are unpredictable and vary from one person to another. Today, new treatments and advances in research are giving new hope to people affected by the disease.

Join Us...

Help the MYELINATORS achieve and surpass their fundraising goal. A little bit here and there is all it takes. We graceously accept your monetary donation, big or small! The Greatest Wealth is Your Health At Hands in Health we are interested in patients who want to be active participants in their own health decisions. Our approach is to fix the problem and to save you money since you won't be going from doctor to doctor. We use a conservative approach on patients of all ages. So if you want to be active enough to garden, exercise, play sports, or just chase the kids around, see us for all your health care needs.

Now that the nice weather is here, everyone wants to be outside to garden, to exercise, and to play sports. Even keeping up with the kids can be exhausting. Sometimes we can over do it when it comes to these simple tasks. At Hands in Health, we can help you leave the pain behind so you can resume your normal activities. When you garden or do any type of yard work, back pain and shoulder strains are common ailments because of repetitive movements. The chiropractors, Dr. Kelli Datres and Dr. Kevin McCarthy, at Hands in Health can restore normal muscle function through muscle testing to find the source of the problem or injury. Patient education and simple exercises are also used to prevent future injuries. Weekend warriors who are anxious to get back in shape too quickly, can have sore calf muscles, hamstrings, and sprained ankles. It is the doctors' job to help you get back in the game by taking stress off the body. Stress and inflammation in the body can decreased with cold laser therapy or Kinesiotape to speed up the rate of healing. Finally, moms and dads can feel run down and tired from the stress of raising a family. The doctors can thoroughly evaluate each individual to gear whole food nutrition to their specific needs. There is no cookbook protocol; each patient is unique and special to us.

So You Don’t Want a Hearing Aid? misconception that started many years ago. The fact is that the majority of people who wear hearing aids have a sensorineural “NERVE” hearing loss and most can be helped with hearing aids. MY LOSS IS NOT THAT BAD: You may not realize how severe your loss is because family members tend to raise their voices or repeat often to help you hear. Family members have a better sense of your hearing loss than you do. Make an appointment with the Audiologist to have your hearing checked.

There are several common reasons why people don’t pursue hearing aids. EXPENSE: The price must be considered relative to the cost of not hearing and the associated risk of social isolation, depression and possible dementia. There are many levels of technology and price ranges to choose from. GETTING STUCK WITH THE AIDS IF I DON’T LIKE THEM: PA law mandates a 30-day trial period with new hearing aids. They may be returned for any reason. HEARING AIDS WILL MAKE ME LOOK OLD: Today there are several styles that are very small and cosmetically appealing. Your hearing loss is more noticeable than a hearing aid. I WON’T BE ABLE TO HANDLE THE CONTROLS: Many hearing aids today have automatic volume, noise and telephone controls. These features are activated automatically and there is no need to manipulate controls. MY FRIENDS HEARING AID DID NOT HELP HER: The benefit that a person receives from hearing aids will vary depending on a number of factors, including the type and degree of hearing loss, the appropriateness of the hearing aid fitting, and the wearer’s motivation to succeed. You can’t predict your success by others’ experiences. I HAVE A NERVE HEARING LOSS AND WAS TOLD BY THE DOCTOR THAT A HEARING AID WON’T HELP ME: This is a July / August 2012

Is Your Bra Killing You? Stop by Jezebels! Please help us help The Women’s Resource Center! Bring in your NEW or gently used bra and get $5 OFF toward the purchase of a NEW bra!

Did you know 70-80% of women are wearing the wrong bra size? It’s true…just google it! Or better yet, ask yourself if you are absolutely positive that your bra is the perfect fit. For 8 out of 10 of you…the answer is NO!

If you’ve never had a professional bra fitting, you probably have no idea how comfortable your bra can feel. Many of our customers are surprised by how different they look and feel after a fitting. Women suffer from bad bras needlessly. A professional fitting from Jezebels is free, so why not give it a try?

Why?

Measuring for your band size is a good starting point but it doesn’t mean you will wear the same size band in every bra. Cup sizes also vary between different styles and brands. Professional fitters know the bras they’re selling and they’ll be able to give you bras to try on that will flatter you. This can save you a lot of time. One of the big benefits of a professional bra fitting is that you also get style advice. Some bra styles look better on certain sizes, and a professional can help you choose the one that will look best on you. They can identify problems with the way a bra fits and suggest different styles that remedy the issue.

How Often?

Most women should get professionally fitted once every year or so. As your body ages, and as you lose or gain weight, your shape changes. This usually affects your bra size along with everything else. It can also affect what style of bra flatters you most, so remember to always keep an open mind.

Largest selection of Bras in Central Pa!

At Jezebel’s, we are passionate about providing excellent customer service. This is why our customers come back time and time again. You don’t have to feel shy or embarrassed during a bra fitting. Breast Feeding and Asthma

(814) 946-2845

Our Keynote Speaker is Nancy Stampahar. ~ Her topic is “It’s never too late to get happy”

It may seem odd that a physician whose primary interest is in lung disease would write about breast feeding. Those who follow my articles in this Journal known that I try to find topics related to women. However, before you read the rest of this article, I want to offer a few disclaimers. This is neither a pro, nor con, treaties on breast feeding, nor is it meant to criticize or support those who do or do not breast feed. My intention was triggered by an article I was reviewing on asthma and believe it or not, the subject of breast feeding was mentioned. It is possible that some, or all, of the following information is already common knowledge to women readers. Breast feeding provides numerous advantages to infants including, but not limited to, developmental, nutritional, and immunologic benefits. I would like to focus on pulmonary health, and specifically asthma. Asthma is a disease of the airways which has multiple components, including genetic and environmental factors. Wheezing is the hallmark symptom of the disease. Symptoms may be triggered by a variety of factors, most commonly infection, allergies, and inhaled pollutants. Based on available data, the benefits of breast feeding on the development of symptoms of asthma are not totally clear. We know that infants exclusively breast fed for 4-6 months have a lower incidence of respiratory tract infections and a lower incidence of wheezing. There is also data to support breast feeding as beneficial in reducing the risk of allergic disease. A review of the literature from 1966 to 2001 (56 studies) has shown that exclusive breast feeding was associated with a reduced risk of asthma overall. Another analysis of over 8,000 subjects living in developed countries showed that exclusive breast feeding for at least 3 months was protective for the development of asthma in children 2-5 years of age. The effects of breast feeding for older patients are less clear. The Tasmania Asthma Study followed 8,500 individuals from age 7-44. In this long-term study, 3 months of exclusive breast feeding was associated with a reduced asthma risk up to the age of 14, after which breast feeding seemed to be a risk factor for asthma. There were some critical limits to this study, but it certainly muddies the water. To summarize, breast milk is an immunologically active substance. Exclusive breast feeding for at least 3 months of life is associated with lower respiratory tract infections, a lower incidence of wheezing during the first two years of life, and a reduced overall incidence of asthma. Obviously, concerns over asthma will not be the sole factor in a woman’s decision to breastfeed. However, the protective effects breast feeding has on asthma are important to recognize.

And this year we will have 2 presenters at lunch; Sarah Jane “Salty” Ferguson and Keli Smith. Both will be sharing their stories of how they juggled life in professional sports with personal demands/commitments.

Time: Registration & Breakfast will begin at 7:45 a.m. Welcome is at 8:15 a.m. The day will end at 4:00 p.m. Location: The Country Cupboard in Lewisburg – 101 Hafer Road, Lewisburg, PA 17837 Cost: Early Bird registration is $99 per person if registered by September 14th. Real Estate

The Right Time In real estate we often hear the mantra “location, location, location” as a key component of any transaction. Another adage is that “timing is everything”. While it may not be “everything” for a real estate transaction, it is a very important component of any successful deal. Whether you are considering buying or selling, now is the right time to act. Consider the following facts. 1. Interest rates are at historical lows. Currently buyers can get 30year mortgages below 4.00%, and even below 3.00% if you go with a shorter payoff option. 2. Housing inventories are adequate to healthy in volume and selection. I use the term adequate here because savvy buyers have already begun to make purchases and many of the best options are disappearing as fast as they get on the market (good to know if you are considering selling). 3. Lenders are beginning to make mortgages more available by adjusting their standards from the draconian standards that dominated 2011. This means getting financing is possible for some people who had difficulty with this in the past. 4. The market is heating up. The National Association of Realtors announced earlier this year that the first quarter of 2012 was the busiest in 5 years. Locally the days-on-market have been dropping, including

a reduction of nearly two months in the State College area when compared to last year’s figures. Personally I have had four properties sell within 1 day, 1 week and one month (2) of going on the market this spring. In talking with other Realtors in our area all report a pleasant increase in business this year. If you are considering buying or selling real estate, now is the time to act. Talk to your local REALTOR and see how your specific situation fits in to today’s rejuvenated market. Location is still a very important part of the equation so you should consult a professional in your area for the latest information on your marketplace. When it comes to timing, now is the right time. Scot Chambers is a Realtor with Keller Williams Advantage Realty who emphasizes sustainable living and housing. Landscaping

Invest In Your Backyard for a "Staycation" Homeowners are spending more time at home these days. As a result, outdoor patios, kitchens, fireplaces, and grills are more popular than ever. Over the last few years, the term "staycation" has come to mean spending time at home instead of spending money on travel. From simple back yard fire pits to elaborate dining areas, homeowners are looking to improve their outdoor living spaces. The American Society of Landscape Architects completed a survey recently of their top members as to what is interesting to consumers and the trends. Of high importance to many homeowners is green remodeling and water usage management. The survey results below touched on this trend. Rounding out the top five are fire pits (94.2 percent), seating/dining areas (94.1 percent), grills (93.8 percent) and installed seating (89.5 percent). Among landscape and garden elements, interest continues to focus on low maintenance landscapes (94.2 percent), native plants (87.2 percent), and food/vegetable gardens (80.3 percent). Respondents also indicated wide interest in several sustainable design features, such as water-efficient irrigation (83.1 percent) permeable paving (77.0 percent) and reduced lawn (72.6 percent). Moonbrothers Landscaping will work with you to incorporate your individual tastes and ideas into an outdoor retreat that will exceed your expectations. Our crews have the experience and qualifications to complete your job with professionalism and I read it in the Women’s Journal!

A Change of Style

fit her face shape). It’s a really fun process, my client never has to put up with unruly hair as it is growing out, and the end point is determined when we get there. Where ever “there” might be! Going from long to short is a reverse process but quicker. Rather than just going from long to very short, I recommend doing this by degrees. From a length of mid back to “short” I can create 5 or 6 different styles by adjusting perimeter length, side angle, bang area, etc. Again, this can be a fun process and gets the most style mileage from long hair. Short to long, long to short – the change doesn’t have to be drastic. In fact, experiencing the change can be part of the fun.

Many clients express a desire to change their hair style but they’re not sure where they want to go with it. My first question at this point is, what specifically don’t you like about your present hair style? Then I get all sorts of complaints about what the client feels her hair won’t do or won’t stop doing. I also ask questions about what the client has done with her hair in the past and how long ago that was. The most common scenario is going from short to long. How do I grow it out? What will it look like while I’m growing it long? What will it look like when it’s long? What style should I grow it into? Etc. By this point the client is usually pretty agitated and unsettled about the whole thing. My response is that she is getting way ahead of herself. Hair grows approximately ¼ to ½ an inch a month. Growing hair out is a slow process that happens in degrees. My recommendation is to start by sculpting the present style to conform to the shape of the skull with a precision cut. Then we should see her back in 12 weeks to see where we are. At that point we can make some style decisions and bring her hair back into conformity with her skull shape. Then we will schedule another appointment in 12 weeks. The 12 week interval is to prevent problems with split ends and to retain conformity with her head shape (as long as her cut fits her skull shape it will

Ten Top Summer Perennials Landscaping

Astilbe (Astilbe varieties) Ranging from inches to several feet in height, Astilbe is the

By Melody Aumiller of Fox Hill Gardens

Summer gardens…

king of the garden and rules the shade in summer, but also tolerates some sun if kept moist. They are available in shades of pink, white, red and purple. Each variety blooms for a long time period, and many have differing bloom times, so you can fill every bare spot with color from July into August. Hardy and flexible, no garden should be without them. Hosta (Hosta varieties) If Astilbe is the king, then Hosta is his queen. Renowned as much for variety of leaf coloring (shades of greens, golds, blue-greens and combinations of these) as their attractive flowers, Hostas are a staple in shade gardens. Variegated Hostas with cream and white in their leaves are cool and stunning, and glow in the garden. Monkshood (Aconitum varieties) Spikes of stunning blue stand proudly behind shorter flowers in mixed shade borders beginning in late summer when many other flowers have finished their summer display. Monkshood is also rabbit and deer resistant, often a challenge in a wooded area. Fernleaf Bleeding Heart (Dicentra Formosa) Lacey foliage adds a delicate texture contrasting with broad leaves, and the cultivar ‘Luxuriant’ is enchanting in spring, summer and fall, with sweet dark pink flowers standing above spreading mounds of delicate blue-green foliage. An abundance of spring flowers lessens to a steady supply throughout the summer. Bellflower (Campanula portenschlagiana) Many varieties of Campanula bloom through the heat of summer, but ‘Birch Hybrid’ flowers are especially profuse from early summer until frost. This 6” high plant has a spreading habit creating a mat of nodding cup shaped flowers of purple blue, and is superb for the front of the planting area, as well as walls and crevices. It’s rabbit resistant, too!

in our imaginations, they are filled with bright roses tumbling over arbors and trellises, spires and drifts of blue, yellow, pinks, reds, purples and oranges in an idyllic English garden style. In truth, many stunning flowers of summer bloom all too briefly, which admittedly makes them all the more precious due to their fleeting presence. They are definitely worth including in the perennial border, but most roses of June give way to only green by July. Poppies loose petals after only a few days, Peonies last perhaps a week, and irises have their impressive day in the sun, but are finished blooming too early to be a lasting force in the summer garden. Here are 10 flowering perennials that require low maintenance and continuing color, texture and highlights throughout the midst of summer, 5 for sun and 5 for shade. If you haven’t already discovered them, you should give them a try!

SUN: Combine blooming shrubs like Spirea, Weigela or Knock Out Roses, and

Dappled Willow shrubs and other cool looking foliage plants to blend bright colors. Add hollyhocks for height and old-fashioned charm, as well as tall phlox, and include fleeting beauties like Delphinium and Larkspur, Poppies, Peonies and Irises for a grand and gorgeous summer border. Tickseed (Coreopsis varieties) Yellow petals of Coreopsis ‘Baby Sun’ and variations like red-eyed ‘Redshift’ shine for weeks at a time and continue to bloom as spent flowers are trimmed, perfect for a cutting garden and attracting butterflies galore. Hardy and tolerant of a variety of soil types and environmental conditions, it’s a popular choice for home gardeners. Woodland Sage (Salvia nemorosa) Salvia spires bring rhythm to the garden when planted in repeated groups along the front of the border, and will attract a host of butterflies. ‘May Night’ provides a stunning cool purple-blue counterpoint to the brilliant colors of many other summer perennials. Cut spent flowers to just above the next leaf down for continued bloom until frost. Coneflower (Echinacea varieties) Purple Coneflower is a hardy native plant and a butterfly favorite. Selections have been developed in many colors and shades, and it’s drought tolerant, deer resistant, and blooms for weeks from June through August. Once petals fall, the remaining bristly cones continue to add interest to the winter garden, wearing white caps in early dustings of snow. Daylily (Hemerocallis varieties) All Daylilies are a great choice for the garden, and they are available in so many heights and colors! Repeat bloomers like ‘Stella De Oro’ are especially popular because they are compact and continue to bloom as closing flower’s stems are trimmed to the ground. They are also fragrant, drought tolerant, deer resistant and attractive to hummingbirds. What’s not to like? Bee Balm (Monarda didyma, fistulosa) Bee Balm attracts hummingbirds like a magnet, has a long blooming period from late June through August, comes in many colors and heights and is tolerant of some shade. For even more flowers, snip a fading flower’s stem to above the next leaf joint so side lower shoots can develop and bloom.

Fox Hill Gardens has an amazing variety of plants for sun and shade, including perennials, annuals, flowering trees and shrubs, unusual evergreens and Japanese maples. Stroll the inspirational display gardens, including an herb garden, water gardens and shady woodland inspired walkways and see many of the plants carried at the nursery in a mature setting. Our helpful and knowledgeable staff can assist you as you select plants for even the most challenging planting areas. Fox Hill Gardens is a full service plant nursery and landscaping business, and provides quality design, installation and maintenance. Come to Fox Hill Gardens - your local source for quality plants!

SHADE:

Few perennials prefer deep shade, but these plants bring long term blooms to shaded or lightly shaded areas. Mix with a background of summer-blooming hydrangea shrubs, Cimicifuga ‘Brunette’, Goatsbeard and Ligularia. Ferns, colorful Heuchera foliage, variegated Solomon’s Seal and ground covers like Sweet Woodruff and Lamium will ensure a great garden performance during the summer season. 5 Common Mistakes to Avoid in a Divorce While there are many steps women need to take so they can emerge from divorce in the best financial shape possible, there are also a few important things to avoid doing when going through a divorce. Taken individually, any one of these mistakes might derail the efforts of even the most skilled divorce team. Combine a few of them, and you could substantially reduce your chances of a successful divorce settlement. 1. Texting - Every type of electronic communication leaves a digital trail. That means your Tweets, your emails, your text messages and every other type of electronic transmission could possibly end up being painstakingly scrutinized by your husband’s divorce team in hopes of bolstering his case. A resounding 92 percent of the nation’s top divorce attorneys say they have seen an increase in the number of cases using evidence taken from iPhones, Droids and other smart phones during the past three years, according to a recent survey of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML). In addition, nearly all (94 percent) of the respondents cited an overall rise in the use of text messages as evidence during the same time period. 2. Facebooking – Like texting, social media sites now play a prominent role in many divorce cases. Overall, 81 percent of AAML members cited an increase in the use of evidence from social networking websites during the past five years, and nearly two-thirds (66 percent) of the respondents reported Facebook as the primary source of this type of evidence. MySpace followed with 15 percent, Twitter at 5 percent and other choices listed at 14 percent. What role do social media sites play in the courtroom? Status updates, online photo albums, profile pages, comments and other activity can be used as evidence to contradict statements you’ve previously made and to help prove infidelity, mishandling of assets, emotional instability, alcohol/drug use, etc. 3. Dating - Divorce proceedings can be protracted and grueling, but don’t make the mistake of turning to a boyfriend to help you cope. Even joining an online dating website can raise red flags, since electronic communication is now commonly used as evidence in divorce cases. At best, it’s simply embarrassing to have your online dating profile used against you. At worst, your soon-to-be-ex-husband may attempt to make you look like a woman of low moral character unworthy of raising a child, or that you are exposing your child to potential online predators. If you feel you absolutely must date while you are in the process of divorcing, please consult with your attorney as soon as possible and carefully consider the consequences. 4. Snooping - Sometimes it’s hard to resist the urge to snoop into your husband’s affairs –especially if you have reason to suspect he’s up to no good. But beware: criminal laws on these issues are less than clear. Pennsylvania prohibits the intentional interception of wire, electronic or oral communication (aka, “wiretapping”). Privacy law experts continue to debate how these laws apply now that digital I read it in the Women’s Journal!

communication dominates our lives, but it’s always better to err on the side of caution. Of course, “snooping” can get very sophisticated these days, as hi-tech spying software is becoming surprisingly common. In certain instances, the law is unambiguous. For example, it’s clearly illegal to install spyware on a computer owned by someone else. But in other instances, the law is more opaque. Installing spyware on a computer jointly owned by two people can lead you into murky legal territory and can even raise questions about whether the computer under consideration is separate or marital property. Be sure you understand both the federal and state laws that apply. Even if you don’t intend to snoop, it makes sense to learn about your rights and what is and isn’t allowed in your state. More importantly though, you need to stay vigilant. Your husband could be illegally snooping on you. 5. Shopping - Many people view shopping as a form of feel-good therapy, but if you’re going through a divorce (or even contemplating one), resist the urge to determine how well this “remedy” works. Now is not the time to increase your debt or to “get back” at your spouse by spending (dissipating) marital assets. Once your divorce is final and you have established a financial plan so you know how much money you can safely spend, you can shop to your heart’s content (provided you stay within your budget). But until then, proceed with caution. Remember this is the time when you need to Think Financially, Not Emotionally. We are committed to the thorough understanding of your legal goals. With this understanding, we can develop a practical strategy and provide sound advice so that the impact of these events will be minimized and you can go on with your life with the least amount of obstacles blocking your new path.

I tried them on with several different pairs of shoes and they work with what I usually wear. I couldn’t be happier with the alterations. Thank you so very much! It is awesome to have pants that fit me just right.” - Kathy, Altoona, PA

Health

Learn What’s Really Going On With Your Health Systems! a goitrogen. It suppresses thyroid function. All soy foods contain these thyroid-inhibiting isoflavones, which are hormone disruptors. In 1999 many nutritional researchers wrote a letter to the FDA urging them to require health warning labels on all soy foods, rather than the health claims the agency eventually approved. At Optimal Wellness we can help a sluggish thyroid and effectively boost your metabolism. I can perform a basic patch test to determine if you have an iodine deficiency and a hair analysis to measure levels of other essential minerals and trace elements. Call today and schedule your appointment with Merry Matukonis RN, CCWFN (Certified Clinician in Whole food Nutrition).

Have you been told your thyroid is normal but you just know it can’t be? You may be right. A thyroid that is operating below its optimal level can contribute to hypothyroidism. This can be characterized by weight gain, lethargy, dry skin, feeling cold, depression, and lack of mental clarity. On the rise in America, some endocrinologists suspect the condition affects many millions. Because the thyroid gland controls the metabolism of every single cell in our bodies, it is critical that it functions optimally. However, thyroid hormone blood tests do not typically show a sluggish thyroid. The gland has to be extremely slow for blood values to reflect hypothyroidism. A hair analysis would show a slow or sluggish thyroid. Thyroid function can improve through better nutrition and hormone balance. Eating healthy fats is one way to manufacture thyroid hormone. According to Dr. Mary Enig, cold pressed extra virgin coconut oil alone, improves thyroid function. But, when used in conjunction with cod-liver oil, the thyroid has the fat it needs to function properly. We can also improve thyroid health by making sure we have sufficient required minerals. A hair analysis shows levels of essential minerals. The thyroid also requires essential trace elements such as iodine to function properly. Iodine is not only necessary for the production of thyroid hormone, it is also necessary for the production of all the other hormones of the body. Another way to help thyroid function is to avoid all soy products. Soy is

Permanent Makeup & Tattoo Removal

Is There a Tattoo that you wish you have never Gotten? Are you tired of putting on your makeup everyday? Thinking of Removing that Tattoo

With Permanent Makeup re-enhancements or maintenance may be desired for some people (510 years). Depending on the bodys ability to hold pigment. Eyeliner Is It painful? Topical Anesthetics are applied to numb the area and provide comfort to ensure a perfect procedure. There may be a minimal discomfort. That Just Does Not Make Sense Anymore?

EliminInk Tattoo Removal is a unique system utilizing the latest binding technology for safe removal of unwanted tattoos. There are numerous reasons for the use of EliminInk in removing Tattoos. 1. Permanent makeup Corrections. 2. Unwanted Name. 3. Gang Related tattoos. 4. Tattoo markings for radiation. 5. Tattoo redsign. 6. Impulsive decisions. These are only a few reasons. EliminInk is designed to bond with the original tattoo ink/pigment, and then draw the ink to the surface. DermRenu, a scar inhibitor which is built into the ElininInk solution (as well as being a stand-alone product that is used as part of the after-care program) is designed to minimize or prevent scarring. How it works and will it be painful? Through a specially formulated process, Eliminink "bonds" with all permanent makeup pigments and tattoo ink, thereby resulting in a tattoo removal procedure that is noncolor dependent, unlike that of a laser, which is color dependent. This, in turn, greatly increases the potential for successful tattoo removal and decreases the overall number of treatment sessions required (as compared to what is frequently required when using the laser technique). The Eliminink Tattoo Removal System works much like the original tattooing process. The EliminInk solution is applied using a tattoo over procedure. However, instead of applying ink or pigment this time, EliminInks specially formulated solution bond with the original tattoo ink, and then draws the ink to the skin's surface. You will have some pain associated with this procedure, no more than when you got the tattoo, so if removing a tattoo is what you want then you will have to endure it.

Dentistry

"Out of the Mouth Thinking" Carnicella and Associates, presents The Spa at Kenlee

However, we also exam our patient's faces for at least 40 minutes while they are in our chair. So now we can discuss sun spots patients may want to have removed with our laser. That is the best technology I could offer them, because now I evaluate the lesion, and send them for a dermatology screening before the removal of any questionable lesions. Patients may have initiated treatment because of a cosmetic want, and now are truley getting a thorough examination TMJ problems also bridge the gap between dentistry and spa treatments. So many of our patients can be helped from bite splints, bite adjustments, or invisalign, but I can't always achieve complete relaxation of their muscles, even with BOTOX. Now we can offer a very comprehensive approach to TMJ therapy with a massage therapist who has specialized in myofascial release. Often times she discovers that problems may not have initiated in the TMJ, but in the neck or back, and the patient again receives a treatment that may have gone undiscovered if it weren't for our "Out of the Mouth" thinking! If you have any additional interest in Juice Plus please call Lashelle at the office, 814-355-5254, or visit gumslovejuiceplus.com. If you would like to come in and visit our dual facility, and see what comprehensive treatment is really about, please just call and set up a visit. If you bring in the Women's Journal when you come, your name will be entered to win a half day of pampering at the spa for you and a friend!

So many people have asked how a spa developed out of a dental practice. However, if we as dental professionals are doing our due diligence, then we need to "think outside the box" or in this case think outside the mouth. So many professionals in all businesses have tunnel vision; they only focus on one very small niche. I feel it is my professional responsibility to provide as much information and attention as I can intelligently do so for my patients. JUICE PLUS is a great example. This is a wonderful product providing patients 28 fruits and vegetables a day. This company has conducted 26 clinical trials demonstrating the health advantages in this whole food product. Because juice plus is not a vitamin, it is a whole food, the anti-inflammatory power is all natural and truly effective. 2 of the most significant studies involve the gum tissue, and our skin; 2 of the areas our businesses focus on most. The anti-oxidants help remove free radicals improving skin condition, and the anti-inflammatory nature of fruits and vegetables have a direct effect on improving bleeding gum tissues. This adjunct to our treatment regimen will help prevent our patients from having future or recurrent problems. Cancer screening is already something contemporary dental education trains us to do, especially with our Velscope technology.

One Beautiful Location, Two Amazing Opportunities The Spa at Kenlee offers you a complete spa experience. With our state-of-the-art treatments and inviting atmosphere you will be able to escape into a world of relaxation. Our stunning views and unsurpassed quality is unlike any other in the area. We are proud to offer in-depth consultations to each and every client in order to help you customize your experience.

At Carnicella & Associates we would love the opportunity to show you what truly exceptional dental care is all about. Our goal is to provide our patients with care that lasts a lifetime, and are happy to be excepting new patients. Our entire team has received special training in providing comfortable, quality dental care, and we love what we do!

Dentistry

Smart Health Investment at Huge Savings! As the healthcare debate rages nationally, two Bellefonte dentists have decided to do something tangible to help individuals and families afford quality dental care. “Statistically speaking, more than 60% of Americans don’t have dental insurance,” said Dr. Frank Dankanich from his dental practice building in Bellefonte with Dr. Wade Newman. “This means that a large majority of people here locally delay dental procedures, which is not good for dental health or overall healthcare.” The solution that Dr. Newman and Dr. Dankanich helped develop with other dentists across the country is both simple and straight forward---the program is called QDP - Quality Dental Plan, which is now rolling out nationally across the nation thanks to Dr. Newman and Dr. Dankanich and other forward thinking dentists. “We sat down with our front office team and saw how much money was going to insurance companies, claim forms administration and collections costs. We also calculated how many hundreds of extra dollars families were spending by not catching potential problems that we could have found during a simple annual dental exam. When we began to run these numbers with other dentists around America... we found that we could offer our patients free initial exams, free exam x-rays, free teeth cleanings and as much as 15% off our usual fee structure simply by creating our own in-house dental savings plan.” The result was QDP... Dr. Newman and Dr. Dankanich are quite proud of what they and the other dentists have created. “This one simple step has allowed us to eliminate the insurance company middle man... and those savings are going right back into the pockets of folks here locally. We’re really proud to be part of this forward looking cost-savings movement. This is a great system for dental care everywhere.” Bellefonte Family Dentistry continues to work with patients who have regular dental insurance--but now offers Quality Dental Plan for those who don't!

Now offering a new in-house dental plan for our patients. We can cut out the hassle & expense of 3rd party insurance companies and pass along the savings to you!
