Debbie ready to zip around town City Plaza, in conjunction with Ride Motorcycles, would like to congratulate Debbie Collumbell of Tamworth on winning the ‘Zip into City Plaza’ promotion. Debbie has won herself a Piaggio Zip 100 valued at $3,250, including on road costs, plus being present in the centre for the draw Debbie also won a $250 Lowes Petroleum furl voucher. The promotion has been running since the beginning of February and Debbie was the lucky winner drawn last Saturday. “I was in absolute shock when I learnt my name was called,” Debbie said. “I still can’t believe it!” “I’ve been a member of the VIP Customer Club since it began in June 2007 and have won heaps of discounts and free items from the kiosk, but this is the first time I have ever won a major prize like this. I love it.” Debbie has her motorcycle license and has had it for sometime
but due to financial obligations she has never been able to get her own bike “Now I will be able to zip around town whenever I want to thanks for City Plaza and Ride Motorcycles,” Debbie said. “I may even sell my car now!!’ “It is great to know that one of our loyal customers have won the Zip 100, we couldn’t ask for a better customer to win,” Joanna Larkham, Marketing Manager of City Plaza said. “Debbie is often seen purchasing items from our retailers within the centre.” “In total we had approximately 700 entries. Our VIP Customers were given an entry form when they swiped their VIP Customer cards through the kiosk during February and March, 2009, they had to simply staple a receipt from any of the specialty retailers within the centre to be eligible to win.” “We like to encourage all our retailers to get involved with
the VIP Customers Club and by simply giving their customers a copy of the receipt and informing them of the promotion Di and the girls at Colonial Kitchen won a $100 fuel voucher as the Colonial Kitchen receipt was attached to Debbie’s winning entry’. During April City Plaza, in conjunction with The Retreat at Froog Moore Park, will be giving away a two night romantic indulgence package worth $595. Again an entry ticket will be printed from the kiosk and all the VIP Customers have to do is place a receipt from any City Plaza Specialty Retailer (Excluding Coles, Kmart and Liquorland receipts) to the entry ticket and place it in the barrel. So if you are not a City Plaza VIP Member yet, join now, it’s easy. Either complete an application online at www.tamworthcityplaza.com.au or complete a form available from any City Plaza Retailers and pop it in the box.

Telstra boosts broadband services in Tamworth region Eight additional Telstra exchanges across north western New South Wales, have either been upgraded or will have their upgrade completed within the next 200 days, offering a further 4,500 homes and businesses high-speed ADSL2+ broadband. Telstra Country Wide’s General Manager for North West NSW, Richard Bourne, said that the company’s continued investment in the local area would help advance the education and health sectors as well as support businesses to boost their productivity. “The communities of Westdale, Manilla and Nemingha will have access to these upgrades immediately, with Bundarra, Bendemeer, Hallsville, Invergowrie and Moore Creek to follow in the next 200 days. The investment in these exchanges is on top of the 22 exchanges upgraded to ADSL2+ by Telstra in April 2008,” Mr Bourne said. “These ADSL2+ upgrades will provide download speeds of up to 20Mbps*, which is up to 78 times faster than a standard 256kbps ADSL connection. “As well as the speed benefits, families will be able to simultaneously use several devices at home at the one time more easily. Content can be delivered with greater reliability, which is important when some members of the family may be downloading work files, others downloading music or videos, while the kids are online researching for school projects. “Businesses will also see the benefits of an ADSL2+ connection as it means that the productivity of the business can be boosted. Operating in an online environment is crucial to many businesses across north western NSW and these improvements

Dane Miller from BBE (left) presents one of the photo-copiers to Larry Apthorpe from the Anglican Counselling Service.
Local firm comes to the aid of counselling service
The Easter Bunny is giving away Cadbury chocolates at Southgate Shopping Centre this Easter! Christian City Church celebrates first year Come along to meet the Easter Bunny at Southgate Shopping Centre this Easter! 1pm to 4pm daily Monday 6 to Thursday 9 and Saturday 11 April
At a time when most firms are tightening their ‘financial belts’ and looking to minimise their expenditure, staff at the Anglican Counselling Service (ACS) are feeling especially thankful to local office supply firm Better Business Equipment (BBE) for their very generous donation of two photo-copiers for use by the Service.
The Executive Director of the Counselling Service, Larry Apthorpe, said today that the offer of the two photo-copiers came as something of a very pleasant surprise. “As a not-for-profit organisation, finances are always limited and so more often than not, we just don’t have the funds to enable us to purchase equipment as sophisticated as
these two photo-copiers’ Mr Apthorpe added. Ian Harrison, from BBE, said his organisation was very pleased to be able to assist ACS with their valuable work throughout the region. One of the photo-copiers has been installed in the ACS Centre at Inverell, while the second will replace a very much out-dated copier in Tamworth.
In April 2008 Christian City Church (C3) came to Tamworth and was officially opened and welcomed by Cr. Warren Woodley. Pastors Brian and Annette Bernays and their two children moved from Byron Bay eight months earlier, to start 3C Tamworth. From a small group, the church has grown quickly in 12 months and on Sunday April 5 it will hold a big celebration to mark its first year in Tamworth. From 3-5pm at the Tamworth Community Centre in Darling St, there will be having a family fun
afternoon with a free BBQ and great coffee, a jumping castle and face painting for the kids and for teenagers and young adults our own C3 band will be performing a great live music inside the centre. This will be followed at 5pm by the weekly worship service followed by an inspirational message from Ps. Keith Edwards from C3 Victory church in Newcastle. Christian City Church Tamworth is a “no bull church that speaks your language, for country minded folk in general, for the young at heart, for anyone
who just wants to know more about God. C3 churches have a new church culture that is fresh, real and powerful,” says Pastor Brian Bernays. “If you’ve been put off “church”, this is different! We work hard at creating an empowering, ‘up’, healthy and safe church ‘culture’. “We aim to produce a worship style that is uniquely Tamworth, with a country rock edge and practical preaching that will meet you where you live.” More information can be found at www.ccctamworth.org

Country Labor Convenor, Christine Robertson MLC today announced that the NSW Government has approved a grant of $469,357 to Tamworth Regional Council for restoration of their assets damaged by the floods and storms of 28 November to 1 December 2008. Ms Robertson said the NSW Government declared a natural disaster in the wake of flooding and storms affected Tamworth, Gunnedah, Narrabri and Walcha, making a range of financial assistance measures available to local councils and other bodies. “One of the flood-affected areas was Tamworth Regional
Council’s Plain Street Sports Field, which sustained extensive damage the flood,” Ms Robertson said. “This NSW Government financial assistance will go towards the cost of replacement of topsoil and levelling, restoration of grassed areas and repairs to the field watering system. “The grant of $469,357 is the maximum allowable and will be paid on certified completion of approved works.” Ms Robertson said the grant would make a significant difference in covering the cost of the flood damage to the Sports Field.
“Council made the application for disaster relief funding for Plain Street Sports Field because it was so badly affected in the flooding,” Ms Robertson said. “It’s great to see that football and other sports will be back on soon down at Plain Street.” Under an agreement with the Commonwealth, the NSW Government pays the first $98.9 million of all natural disaster costs in each year. The Commonwealth matches NSWexpenditure for costs between $98.9 million and $173.1 million and beyond that, pays for threequarters of all costs.

Regional NSW saves energy in Earth Hour Country Energy revealed this week that towns across regional and rural areas turned off switches during Earth Hour thus voting in favour of saving the planet. From Bathurst to Port Macquarie, Griffith to Goulburn and towns in between, Country Energy monitored the change in energy consumption as lights and appliances were flicked off for an hour with an average consumption saving across the company’s footprint of 10 percent. Energy consumption across the New England and North West for Earth Hour reduced by 5 percent compared to the same time last week, in Tamworth it was 6 per cent. Compared to the hour prior to Earth Hour, energy consumption across the New England and North West reduced by 7 percent and in Tamworth it was 9 percent. Country Energy distributes power to 95 per cent of NSW. “The savings showed a commitment to help the environment and reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while sending a clear message that individual actions can make a difference,” Country Energy’s Regional General Manager, Matt Patterson, said. “In the New England and North West, we noticed energy consumption started to drop a bit before 8pm, which tells us people were turning off more than just their lights – they were getting around their homes switching appliances off at the power point”. “Appliances, such as televisions, microwaves, computers and phone chargers all use a small amount of energy when they are left on at the power point, so turning them off, along with unnecessary lights, makes a difference to the amount of power being used and the money you can save on your bills.” Revealing just how enthusiastically

people embraced the idea of being more energy efficient, visits to Country Energy’s free Infrequent User – Energy Efficiency Tips web page doubled for the month leading up to Earth Hour. “People have really embraced the idea of Earth Hour and what it stands for but what
we’d like to see is the energy saving actions of Earth Hour used every day,” Matt said. ‘Reducing power consumption isn’t just about switching off lights and appliances for an hour – it’s about ongoing actions that will help to minimise the carbon footprints of everyone and make a change for the better.”

Daylight Saving ends next weekend, on Sunday, April 5, 2009, at 3:00 am, when clocks are put back one hour. Under the previous arrangement in NSW, Daylight Saving would have ended on the last Sunday of March so for the first time, NSW will have enjoyed an extra month of Daylight Saving, bringing the total to six months. This follows landmark discussions among the south eastern Australian states and territory on the harmonisation and extension of Daylight Savings. Under the new scheme, Daylight Saving begins on the first weekend in October and ends on the first Sunday in April. Daylight Saving will start again on Sunday, October 4, 2009 at 2:00 am, when clocks will be put forward one hour.

Eight years for Pumpkin Festival Story: Warren White Eight years ago the concept of Kootingal Pumpkin Festival was to promote Kootingal using a theme easily accepted as being an indication of the districts attractions, similar to Gunnedah’s Tomato Festival, the Grafton Jacaranda Festival, and the Cherry Festival at Young. Various icons were suggested including lucerne, poultry, granite and even a festival depicting the Patterson’s Curse or Salvation Jane plant that covers the Kootingal and Moonbi Hills each year in a carpet of purple. However it was unanimously agreed that the pumpkin should be used. The humble pumpkin is grown in many types and sizes throughout the Kootingal District and is a fruit that can be used in so many ways including the pumpkin scones made famous by CWA all over Australia, pumpkin soup and baked pumpkin that has sustained many Australian families over the years, pumpkins to flavour all sorts of cooking and pumpkins to feed cattle. Originally the festival was held in conjunction with the Kootingal Lions Motor Show but both shows grew so quickly that each show had to be conducted on separate grounds
and on separate days. The original idea was to find the heaviest pumpkin grown in the district and present the grower with a certificate and a small monetary prize but the local Summers IGA Superette management saw the potential for Kootingal in this type of promotion and offered a sponsorship of $500 to fund the heaviest pumpkin competition. This attracted such a wide range of interests that their sponsorship has almost doubled over the years. Huge Pumpkins come from as far away as Southern Queensland and Victoria. Apart from the pumpkin events the Kootingal Pumpkin Festival now features many and varied attractions including the Pumpkin Princess and Pirate competition for girls and boys aged 5 to 11, Pumpkin Cooking, Pumpkin Bowling, the Wheelbarrow Race timed trial, Woodley’s Motors Woodchopping, Sheep Shearing demonstrations including the shearing of two Alpacas on the Shearemore portable woolshed, the Cloverleaf Square Dancers and many more attractions. This year the Young CCMA team will be entertaining with country music and the Goomeri Aboriginal Dancers will be performing following the welcome
Ben Hewitt shows his little sister April and his friend Noah Hargreaves the Giant Pumpkin that will be in the competition to find the heaviest Pumpkin grown by a school at the Kootingal Pumpkin Festival.
to traditional tribal land by Neville Sampson. Stalls of every type, all sorts of craft, jewellery, produce and even lizards made out of foam rubber will be on display - and there will be plenty to eat and drink. There will be plenty to keep the children amused with merrygo rounds, jumping castles and Rodney the Clown will be there for
face painting. New competitions will be photography, with a rural or personal interest theme, and graphic art for the computer whizzes. The Kootingal Hall will be filled with items made by the local Spinner and Weavers and Knitting Clubs, which should be very interesting to see. Poppy has advised that he has
made two special treats for patrons. One is called Wild Hibiscus Flower which has something to do with Champagne and the other is a red hot Chilli sauce called “Grievous Bodily Harm” for those who cannot get a Chilli hot enough to satisfy. Mum-preneur preaches how to profit from eBay DONNA Kelly belongs to a generation of mum-preneurs who have logged onto the world of online stores and are making a living from their lounge rooms.
“The classes cater for people with no experience through to current users who wish to gain better understanding of the complexities of such a large selling and buying platform.”
Power-seller Donna stumbled upon the profitability of eBay five years ago when she bought three printer cartridges and decided to keep one and sell the rest, making double what she paid.
The course teaches students how to list items for sale and be successful on eBay and covers: • Opening a seller’s account • Do research and create Listings • Improve your Listings with better descriptions and photography. • Set pricing • Open and use a PayPal account • Monitor your Listings • Complete transactions - accepting secure online payments. • Product Sourcing • A valuable demonstration of how to trade safely • An introduction to eBay Stores along with how to build your very own eBay store.
In her first year of business she achieved a turnaround of $100,000. Today, Donna specializes in selling designer children’s clothing. Students will learn the fundamentals of buying and selling online at Donna’s upcoming workshop in Tamworth. Donna was trained by eBay to teach in July 2005 and is a member of the Professional eBay Seller’s Alliance (PeSA). Her eBay workshop aims to help business people, stay at home mums, retirees and anyone else who wishes to learn the basics of selling on eBay. The workshop is an overview from a highly experienced eBay powerseller and will benefit each person regardless of their current knowledge of using eBay. “This quick but valuable demonstration of how to trade safely is a must for new users,” Donna said.

Migrants and refugees careers Expo a success Story: Gary Fry The inaugural Armidale and New England Migrant and Refugee Employment Services Expo, held in Armidale recently, has been declared a resounding success by organisers and stakeholders. “One important achievement was that it raised awareness within the community of this group of potential employees; that there are these people who are willing, able and very eager to work. Also, refugees and migrants have told me they said gained very useful information from service providers present on the day, including TAFE, Centrelink, the Department of Education and Training, employment and training organisations, the University of New England, Armidale Dumaresq Council, and the Department of Immigration and Citizenship,” said Armidale based Settlement Support Project Worker, Judith Roberts, of Northern Settlement Services Limited, which is funded by the Department of Immigration and Citizenship. With approximately 900 migrants and refugees having taken up residence in the region in recent years, the Expo was a chance for them to get advice on education and training, career pathways and migration, through direct contact with a Migration Agent, who answered visa questions. “The support of the Northern Inland Regional Development Board helped make the Expo the success that it was,” she said. According to Mrs. Roberts,
representatives of organisations in immigration, employment, education and training fields have universally praised the Expo in their feedback. Steve Curruthers is a Marketing Coordinator with one of the agencies in attendance, Jobs Australia. “It was a wonderful networking opportunity and a chance to meet local migrant workers,” he said. “The Expo was a great forum for Jobs Australia to pass on information about our programs such as Job Network activities and ‘Speediestaffsolutions’, which is our commercial labour hire business for short and medium term casual recruitment,” Mr. Curruthers said. A number of refugees to have settled in the area in recent years have been Sudanese, so a Dinka interpreter was on hand at the Expo. “Finding out about how to get a job can be difficult because of many of us still learning English,” said Simon Ater, a Sudanese refugee who came straight from Kenya to Armidale three and a half years ago. “It was very helpful. All of the organisations concerned were there. It made contact easy, especially for those of us who could not speak English well. We found out how we can work together and what we need to do for our own future,” he said. Mr. Ater explained that one of the things he learnt at the Expo was how to apply for a job in Australia. “First, you have to put your work experience together in a resumé, then make contact with the agencies which were present at the Expo,” he said.
Northern Inland Regional Development Board Project Officer, Kim-Trieste Hastings; Armidale Settlement Support Project Worker with Northern Settlement Services Limited (NSS), Judith Roberts; Sudanese refugee, Simon Ater; and Marketing Coordinator with Jobs Australia, Steve Curruthers.
“I’d received numerous enquiries in regards to migrant sponsorship throughout the region, as well as other migration enquiries, which I was able to direct to Immigration Department representatives on the day,” Northern Inland Regional Development Board Project Officer, Kim-Trieste Hastings said. Ms Hastings said the Expo corresponds with the Board’s work
2009 Banksia Awards Local State MP, Peter Draper, believes there are many individuals, groups, organizations and government agencies throughout the Electorate of Tamworth who would be eligible to nominate for Banksia Awards which celebrate environmental leadership and innovation. “Considering the world wide debate on climate change it has never been more important to pursue these goals,” Mr Draper said. “We need to encourage leadership and innovation to enable Australians to break new ground
in the pursuit of environmental solutions.” Mr Draper said that over the past couple of years he had been impressed by environmental programs carried out through local schools, the work of individual farmers, land care programs, council projects and the work of government agencies and was aware of a number that would certainly qualify for recognition. “Entering such an award’s process provides an invaluable opportunity for recognition and presents others with the inspiration
to follow,” he said. Mr Draper said categories include: Origin Gold Banksia Award Celebrating the best of the Banksia Awards Categories. Prime Minister’s Environmentalist of the Year Award - Acknowledges the outstanding contribution of an individual, organization or community to the environment. Mercedes-Benz Australian Environmental Research Award $30,000 awarded for innovative sustainable solutions

in the Skilled Migration program. “We have been actively working with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship and employers throughout the New England North West region of NSW to facilitate skilled migration as one way of addressing the skilled labour shortage, which can impede business development.” The Expo answered a broad spectrum of queries from migrants
and refugees, ranging from qualification requirements for jobs through to family stream migration and visa enquires. Ministerial Liaison with the Department of Immigration and Citizenship, Cynthia Moncrieff, said the Expo is likely to be used as blueprint, in rolling out the concept nationwide. Another Expo is being planned for the New England in 2010.
Brian Robinson Fellowship Entries open to people under the age of 35 looking for funding assistance in the field of sustainability. Up to $30,000 can be awarded. Banksia International Award Awarded by the Banksia Foundation Board for an internationally significant contribution to sustainability Environment Minister’s Young Environmentalist of the Year Award - Recognising the valuable contributions young Australians make to protecting and caring for our environment Mr Draper said there were also categories covering Education, Water, Land and Biodiversity, Indigenous ‘Caring for
Country’, Built Environment, Eco Innovation, Large Business Sustainability, Small and Medium Enterprises Business Sustainability, Agriculture and Food - “Paddock to Plate” and Environmental Services. “Entries close on Monday 11 May 2009 with winners presented at the Banksia Gala Event on Friday 24 July,” he said. “We have dedicated individuals and organizations working on environmental issues and I encourage them to seal their achievements with a Banksia Environmental Award,” Mr Draper concluded. ‘Prime Super Northern Inland Innovation Awards’.... Nominations being sought Story: Gary Fry Are you innovative, cutting-edge, groundbreaking, leading or new in your approach and practices? Nominations for the Prime Super Northern Inland Innovation Awards close at 4pm on 17th April. Northern Inland Regional Development Board Chair, Meryl Dillon is urging all businesses and organisations in the region to consider what makes them innovative and how widespread recognition of that could benefit them. NIRDB Project Officer for the Awards, Angela Clifford’s mission over the next month is to extensively travel the region, getting in touch with the business and industry sectors of Northern Inland NSW. “I’ll be talking with people from the Councils, representatives of different associations, business and industry organisations. I’ll be liaising directly with the grass-roots, making sure people are aware of these innovation awards and the opportunity they represent – it is an exciting thing to be a part of,” she said. According to Mrs. Clifford, nominations from Quirindi to Moree, and across to Tenterfield should be flooding in, because local innovators tend to be low key and need to build their profile, with the Awards offering an unique regional exposure opportunity. “A lot of people don’t really know about the businesses that are out there in this region and the innovative work that they are doing. Now is the time for a business or association to make us aware of what they are doing, their achievements, new ideas and practices that they have come up with. Innovation isn’t invention. There are so many operations out
there, large and small, which are innovative, growing and succeeding. We want to hear these stories.” “Nominees stand to gain marketing, public awareness and to make us proud, across the region, of what they are doing and exactly how they are doing it,” Mrs. Clifford said. The Prime Super Northern Inland Innovation Award Categories for 2009 are: Agriculture / Horticulture and associated services Tourism / Leisure and services Professional and Retail services Manufacturing and Engineering Research and Education There will be a Nominator’s Award, to acknowledge businesses and individuals who nominate others. The 2009 Innovation of the Year Award will be presented to the leading innovator across all categories. The Northern Inland Regional Development Board’s Innovation Awards Committee will select the finalists, who will be invited to attend the Innovation Expo and gala awards evening on Saturday, 30th May in Narrabri. The Prime Super Northern Inland Innovation Awards have an important role in promoting business development and highlighting role model operations to inspire others. “In these challenging economic times, this region has a lot of businesses that are surviving and progressing and the Board wants to highlight those achievers,” NIRDB Executive Officer, Don Tydd said. “It is so important to
Northern Inland Regional Development Board Project Officer, Angela Clifford, Graeme Wright of WrightWay Design and NIRDB Executive Officer, Don Tydd finalising material for the Prime Super Northern Inland Innovation Awards. Image: Danieli Studios
recognise success on a regional level. The region should be more self-aware and proud of its innovators and strengths. Northern Inland NSW can then work to be better appreciated as a progressive Region on State, National and even
International levels.” For a nomination form, contact the Northern Inland Regional Development Board’s office on: 6771 3284 or download the nomination form at the Award’s website: www.niia.com.au EP4632

I watched Bingara turn it on again for the region last Saturday night. The concert at the beautiful Roxy Theatre was a knockout, in terms of organisation, talent and regional thinking. Since the grand old lady of Bingara was restored five years ago it has shown just how versatile it is - live theatre, movies, conferences, wedding, recitals - The Roxy just takes it all in its stride. With the organisational ability of the North West Theatre Company, the annual regional concerts are now of a standard rarely seen elsewhere. The invited performers this year came from Tamworth, Bingara, Barraba, Inverell, Narrabri and Warialda. They were all extremely competent in their various musical styles and they were stage-managed perfectly by the Company members so that rehearsal time and continuity of performance was spot on. It was a regional experience of extremely good talent.
Will the Capitol ever be used the same way? I think it would be perfect. The extra seating would allow concertgoers from all over the north to see the very best. The difficulties of back stage would have to be overcome by good stage management on several levels (those dreaded stairs have already been discussed) but the venue could be utilized beautifully for a regional concert - much like the annual “Music of the North” concerts held in the Town Hall by the ABC some years ago. Those particular concerts brought together great talent from all over the listening area of ABC Radio New England North West. They actually funded an annual scholarship for a local tertiary student - so there’s no reason why a similar annual performance in the Capitol shouldn’t do much the same. Last weekend the Capitol was bursting at the seams for three performamces of ‘Menopause, the Musical’. The Philip Quast recital was also full in February,
and we know of the success the local performing groups have had there since it opened late last year. The lead that the people at the Roxy in Bingara have taken could easily be emulated here for a truly regional extravaganza to help an organization in need of a dollar in these difficult financial times. The Roxy concert was honed to the bone in terms of timing. The lack of egos and self-indulgence in no small way made the night more memorable. That might just be a problem here: sorting out who would do what in the five minutes each act would be allowed to play. Well yes, that’s where the problems may arise. It would take broad shoulders to sort through the differences that already exist amongst many Tamworth performers, let alone bringing in other artists from all over the North. But they’ve done all that at the Roxy why not at the Capitol? Anyone got their hand up?

Courtesy of Country Music Bulletin After spending the last two weeks in hospital following a six month illness, Rita Schneider – of the famous Schneider Sisters - finally lost her battle with pneumonia on Saturday morning, March 28. Rita’s sister Mary was with her and said that she went peacefully and her niece Melinda, who was in America, made arrangements to fly back to Australia as soon as she heard the news. Rita paired with her sister Mary as the internationally acclaimed television, stage and recording duo the Schneider sisters and built a substantial career in her own right as a comedy recording and performing artist. Originally from Rockhampton in Queensland, The Schneider Sisters formed in Brisbane and quickly gained work in theatre, on tours and radio shows throughout Australia. Rita and Mary joined an Army Entertainment Unit and toured British Armed Forces Overseas Bases in Japan and Korea. On their return, they made Sydney their permanent home, doing various bookings in clubs, theatres, hotels and the television circuits. The girls performed in the first variety TV show to go to air in Australia – “Seeing Stars” in Melbourne. After amicably going their separate performing ways in 1971, Rita did some straight acting in various television series, including “Divorce Court”, “Dad and Dave in Snake Gully” with Gordon Chater and “A Current Affair” with Mike Willessee. She recorded an EP with Hadley Records – Country Fun – and in 1974, joined the Channel 7 Network as a talent and copyright supervisor. Apart from auditioning talent for various shows, Rita did bookings for commercials, documentaries, “Jeannie’s Little Show”, “Julie Anthony’s First Special”, “Cuckoo in the Nest”, “Willessee Re-enactments” and “UFO’s Downunder”, to name a few. She was also in charge of music copyright for the Seven Network, selecting music for series and commercials and organising world distribution clearances for “A Country Practice”, “Sons and Daughters”, “Rafferty’s Rules”, “Ben Cropp Documentaries” and many more ATN and packaged series. After 17 years with Channel 7, Rita retired and got back into songwriting and producing music books with accompanying cassettes such as “Songs of Australia” and

Movie Watch the police captain (Jeffrey Donovan), a pediatrician (Peter Gerety), a psychiatrist (Denis O’Hare) reveal themselves to be cruel and self serving. However it is Christine’s instincts to fight rather than to surrender that will change her forever. Jolie’s extraordinary performance as she traces Christine’s harrowing emotional passage is to witness an undeniable tour de force of screen acting, inspired by the legendary direction of Clint Eastwood. It is a rare moment to witness the synergy of two great talents on the silver screen in a very dark and true story.
fool of himself. It’s a formula that has been there since the first Pink Panther Clouseau days, and unlike the Sellers film script, choc a block with wonderful character comedy timing - with Martin in the Panther role they have become completely predictable. Veteran comedienne Lily Tomlin arrives halfway through the film to teach Clouseau a sense of ethics, but sadly even her comedy talent fails to fire Martin or the film up, The Pink Panther 2 has a few mildly amusing moments, but not anywhere near the amount to justify the time or money spent on such a stinker of a movie. FOUR CHOC TOPS OUT FIVE
Starring: Amy Ryan, Angelina Jolie, John Malkovich, Jeffrey Donovan, Michael Kelly and Gattlin Griffith. Director: Clint Eastwood. Screenplay: J. Michael Straczynski. The Story: It is 1928 and Christine, a single mother living in Los Angeles, returns home from her work to find that her young son, Walter (Gattlin Griffith), has gone missing. The response of the Los Angeles Police Department is casual and condescending, which turns out to be a preview of worse treatment to follow. After a few months, with great fanfare and press coverage, the city’s hatchet-faced police chief (Colm Feore) stages a reunion between Christine and a boy who is evidently not Walter. When Christine points this out, she is treated first as a hysterical, traumatized woman and then as a lunatic and is ignored, and ridiculed in the papers and then locked away in a mental institution. Reported as delusional and an unfit mother, Christine finds an ally who helps her fight the city to look for her missing boy. Based on the actual incident that rocked California’s legal system, the film tells the shocking tale of a mother’s quest to find her son and those who won’t stop until they silence her. Aided in her darkest hour by a crusading Presbyterian minister (John Malkovich) and a lawyer (Geoff Pierson) as figures of supposedly benevolent authority such as

The Story: Steve Martin stars once again as the bumbling Inspector Jacques Clouseau, made famous by Peter Sellers. Clouseau is on the trail of the most notorious thief in the world, The Tornado, who has left his calling card behind after stealing four of the world’s most valued possessions: The Shroud of Turin, the Royal Emperor’s Sword, the Magna Carta, and the Pink Panther diamond. Due to the size and scope of such a case, a “dream team” of super-sleuths from different countries has been called together to work in joint fashion to crack the case, Britain’s Pepperidge (Molina), Italy’s Vincenzo (Garcia), Japan’s Kenji (Matsuzaki), and France’s Clouseau. Also assisting them is Clouseau’s sometime girl friend and co-worker in crime solving, Nicole (Mortimer), his faithful assistant Ponton (Reno), and the alluring Indian agent Sonia (Rai). As usual for a Steve Martin script, there is plenty of over-the-top slapstick involved as the storyline takes detours for the sake of comedy often. Some scenes are obviously contrived solely to generate more slapstick laughs, such as repeat jaunts to flammable

Norths triumph in cricket Grand Final Story: Michael Shelton North Tamworth celebrated their 80th year as a club by convincingly beating last year’s winners Old Boys in the grand final of the Tamworth cricket competition. In ideal conditions Old Boys batted first and seemed in control at 5-209 during their innings. After losing early partners, Andrew Harriot 65 found a steady partner in Josh Hazlewood 32 and they pushed the score to 93. Having been named captain of NSW schoolboys the previous week 16 year old Harriet produced a classy innings before his innings of 103 balls was cut short by the wily captain of Norths Don Lewington who again showed he is the best spinner in Tamworth with figures of 22-2-4-47. Ben Middlebrook 41 and Aaron Hazlewood 31 looked sure to push Old Boys towards 300 before a major collapse saw four wickets fall for two runs. Rearguard resistance by Josh Smith 10 and Will Howard 10no saw the total reach 232. Apart from the captain, Adam Greentree bowled steadily for 2-40 while Mick Rixon chimed in with a handy 3-25 with his spinners. Norths had to bat for nearly an hour on Saturday night and looked to have got through a fiery attack
from the Hazlewood boys before Andy Mack clean bowled Glenn Lewington and Mick Rixon with two balls that moved late. With Will Howard taking the vital wicket of Brendan Rixon, Norths looked to be in trouble at 3-48 on Sunday morning. However Adam Lole, while slow, was proving immovable and with Dave Fisher mixing some lusty strokes with a sound defense the attack headed by Josh was worn down until Andy Mack removed Lole 46 with a ball that swung late. This brought Kris Halloran to the crease and in conjunction with Fisher they proved to be the matchwinners. Fishers innings ended on 69, a wonderful innings from a player who is starting to blossom into the allrounder he has always promised to be. Halloran finished on 65no and is another player that is fulfilling his promise. These players, along with Mick Rixon and Ben Legge, another two young players who have had a wonderful year, can thank their captain for keeping faith in their abilities and encouraging them at times when they struggled for runs or wickets. The much hyped Old Boys bowling attack failed to fire with only Andy Mack 14-1-3-47 looking

like worrying the Norths batsman. The win by Norths capped of a great year for Tamworth cricket and especially its likeable captain Donny Lewington. As well as captaining Norths to victory, Don was also captain of the Tamworth team that became the first side ever outside Newcastle to win the prestigious Country Cup.
Don was also coach of the Northern Inland Colts that won the NSW Country Colts Carnival this year in Maitland and he has a great rapport with the younger players and it shows by the way they respond to his captaincy and coaching. Tamworth junior cricket has also had a great year with the highlights being the successes of
the 15s,14s and 12s in their various competitions. This augers well for Tamworth cricket and while guns like NSW 19s players Blake Fitzgerald and Josh Hazlewood, who leave to play for St George in Sydney, will be hard to replace, they have shown the way for the younger brigade.

Roundabout Manilla Vale Joy Highlands Last Thursday a vehicle accident claimed the life of much loved resident Joy Highlands. Joy and Tom Highlands lived on a property on the outskirts of Manilla, had two married sons, each having three wonderful grandchildren for Joy to dote on. They moved to Manilla from Sydney some years ago and for Joy the CWA was her choice of working for her community. Her role in recent years was as President of Manilla Branch and she was a driving force behind the organisation building on her credentials as a dedicated community leader. Across the CWA movement she was respected as a warm hearted and good spirited member who happily reached out to others. Within hours of her passing the sad news was spread across hundreds of homes in the lower New England North West Region. Friends from their days of living and working in Sydney
reacted quickly in making contact with her family. Joy’s birthday was the day before the accident and she was just 61; that is far too young to lose such a friend. The Manilla community is in a state of shock that a gentle lady who gave so much to others through the CWA is no longer here. Joy Highlands reached out to others, she helped many reach for the stars and she was so content to see others make good. She is sadly missed by her family and her many friends.

Arthritis Week in March has local significance
Arthritis Week commenced on March 29. Arthritis can affect up to 20% of all Australians through one or more of the 200 forms of the disease. From early childhood arthritis can affect right through to senior years. The now abandoned Tamworth branch of the Arthritis Foundation is missed across the region. The closest workshops and seminars are to be held at Windsor and Newcastle. However the Foundation’s health professionals react positively to inquiries. Interested parties are hoping for a combined visit to Manilla/Barraba. Today so much can be achieved to alleviate arthritis pain while pain management of the disease brings relief to many. Information 1800 011 041.
This popular fundraising event is here again. Scheduled at Manilla for Sat 2nd May at Chaffey Park from 10am. Ideal for families and individuals with all proceeds to The Cancer Council of NSW. Masks • spares • Tech supporT sleep aponea Machines & Masks • Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a condition where people stop breathing repeatedly during sleep due to their airway collapsing. This can be due to such factors as a large tongue, extra tissue in the airway, or decreased muscle tone holding the airway open. As a result, air is prevented from getting into the lungs. • When healthy sleep is interrupted in this way, it puts a strain on the heart and other vital organs, leading to a number of serious health conditions including stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure and depression. • Common symptoms include daytime sleepiness, irritability, snoring and morning headaches. • Acacia Medical Equipment carries a range of leading reliable brands of sleep apnea machines and masks for purchase or for hire. Clinical support (held in both Armidale and Tamworth) and replacement parts are also available. Please speak to our team to discuss your needs.
