Art GAllery Now we’re going to turn this pavilion into a lively nightspot, an art gallery, where we can import shadow people and study lighting effects in Photoshop. Look at three somewhat different views from the street, for different heights. (The walls and front have been removed to view the interior). Moving closer in to see the artwork, we will now try the Filter>Render>Lighting Effect tool. This will give you a sense of lighting certain areas in the scene. It won’t be entirely realistic, but at least it shows how lighting can affect an interior space. Sometimes you may want to turn the View>Shadow tool off to make this clearer. The dialogue box for lighting effects allows several different adjustments, shown in Figure G6.1f, as follows: • • • • • •
Lighting Styles>Spotlights, flood lights, triple lights, and others It will allow you to switch the lights on and off. The intensity can go from negative to full. The focus of the area can be adjusted from narrow to wide. Reflective properties of objects can be matte or shiny. And very importantly, the ambience must be adjusted. Otherwise, the room will appear either too dark or too light.
It takes some time playing with this tool to get it the way you want it, but it’s worth the trouble. Lighting a room is extremely important in interior design. This will complete the tour of lighting in Photoshop for now, but this topic will reappear in subsequent chapters for lighting interior rooms by various types of lamps and lights.
Figure G6.1a Art Gallery, Bird’s-eye View. Through Windows>Components, you can load trees, cars, paintings, spotlighting, and people.
Figure G6.1b Art Gallery, View from Street.
Figure G6.1c Art Gallery, Sidewalk View, Storefront. Notice that the people we downloaded cast their own shadows. Shadows can also be added manually when necessary. Copy the figure to a new Layer, Rotate it flat, (away from the light), then Image>Adjust>Darken it. Then you can Select>Modify>Feather for the edges.

A Cultural History of Gardens Edited by Michael Leslie and John Dixon Hunt
“Let it be said at once: the book successfully addresses the three large questions that the general editors of the garden set ... have devised: ‘...why were gardens created? How were they used or visited... And how does their representation in different arts express the position and value of the garden within its culture?’" Bryn Mawr Classical Reviews A Cultural History of Gardens presents an authoritative survey from ancient times to the present. This set of six volumes, available for individual purchase for the first time, covers over 2500 years of gardens as physical, social, and artistic spaces. Michael Leslie is Professor of English at Rhodes College, USA. John Dixon Hunt is Professor Emeritus at the University of Pennsylvania, USA.

Cities Interrupted Visual Culture and Urban Space Edited by Shirley Jordan and Christoph Lindner
Cities Interrupted explores the potential of visual culture – in the form of photography, film, performance, architecture, urban design, and mixed media – to strategically interrupt processes of globalization in contemporary urban spaces. Bringing art and creative practice into the centre of discussions about the future of cities, it presents original essays each sited in a different global city, including London, New York, Amsterdam, Beijing, and Doha. Together the essays reveal how the concept of ’interruption’ in cities enables a new understanding of the forms of space, experience, and community that are emerging in today’s rapidly transforming urban environments.

Interior Urbanism Architecture, John Portman and Downtown America Charles Rice
“Charles Rice's study of the architecture of John Portman raises key questions about the quality of public space in modern cities where multi-use complexes with gleaming towers and soaring atriums remake the relationship between street, square and interior. Rice thus offers a timely analysis for developers and planners in today's international marketplace.” Alice Friedman, Professor of Art, Wellesley College, USA

Interior Urbanism explores the roots of the contemporary tension between inside and outside, identifying the concept of interior urbanism by analysing the works of John Portman in 1960s and 70s America. This captivating study reconsiders the American downtown during a crucial time in its development, helping us to think in new ways about space in cities today. Charles Rice is Professor of Architecture at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia.
Shopping Towns Europe Commercial Collectivity and the Architecture of the Shopping Centre, 1945-1975
The first book to explore the introduction and dissemination of the shopping centre in Europe. Eighteen case studies span the continent on both sides of the Iron Curtain, revealing the first European shopping malls to be much more than mere carbon copies of their American precursors. Drawing connections between architectural history, political economy and commerce, together these studies tell us much about the status and role of modernist design, the history of consumption, and the rapidly-changing social, urban, and national contexts of post-war Europe.

Urban Design Thinking A Conceptual Toolkit Kim Dovey
Bridging the gap between theory and practice, Urban Design Thinking shows how the design of our cities and urban spaces can be informed by the theories of urbanism, architecture and spatial analysis. Taking assemblage thinking as its critical framework, the book introduces a wide variety of key theoretical urban concepts (ranging in scale from graffiti to globalisation), each demonstrating how theory is central to urban design practice. The thirty short chapters can be read alone or in sequence, each opening a valuable conceptual window onto how cities work and how they are transformed through design practice.

Architecture and Ritual How Buildings Shape Society Peter Blundell Jones
Architecture and Ritual explores how the rituals of everyday life are defined in space by the buildings which we inhabit. It goes beyond traditional assumptions about style, aesthetics and utility to deal with something more implicit: how buildings shape and reflect our experience in ways of which we remain unconscious. Through deep readings of a wide range of works of architecture (from the Nuremberg Rally to modern hospitals), this fascinating study shows how architecture coordinates and consolidates social relations, and structures human rituals – from the grand and formal to the everyday.

Protecting Suburban America Gentrification, Advocacy and the Historic Imaginary Denise Lawrence-Zuniga
Protecting Suburban America explores the dynamics and conflicts inherent in preserving historic twentieth-century suburban landscapes in America. Examining the changing landscapes of five suburban cities, the study reveals the complex dynamics found within different longterm, immigrant, and gentrifying populations. Bridging architecture, anthropology, planning, and urban studies, its unique approach combines historic preservation with multi-sited ethnographic fieldwork, to shed fascinating light on issues of heritage, preservation, gentrification, ethnicity, and contested values in suburbia. Denise Lawrence-Zuniga is Professor of Architecture and a sociocultural anthropologist at the College of Environmental Design, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona, USA.

Food and Architecture At The Table Edited by Samantha L. Martin-McAuliffe
Food and Architecture offers the first, groundbreaking analysis of two disciplines which both rely on a combination of creativity, intuition, taste, and science but which have rarely been engaged in direct dialogue before. Structured around a series of ‘conversations’ between chefs, culinary historians and architects, the book draws on a range of approaches from both disciplines and includes case studies which range from pig slaughtering and farmhouses in Greece to authenticity and heritage in American cuisine.

The Architecture of Neoliberalism How Contemporary Architecture Became an Instrument of Control and Compliance Douglas Spencer
With their elegant looped and landscaped structures, the buildings of contemporary architectural practices like Zaha Hadid, OMA and SOM announce themselves as highly progressive – promoting free circulation between private and public, work and pleasure, education and business. This book argues that the architecture of the ‘new spatiality’ has in fact allied itself alarmingly with a neoliberal agenda, with important implications for our understanding of architectural design and its relationship with politics and control. The Architecture of Neoliberalism presents a provocative and timely critical intervention, exploring what this alliance means for architecture and the inhabitants and users of today’s buildings.
