Our student spotlights recognize students who are exceptionally demonstrating growth and musically excelling. We are so grateful to be associated with these fantastic students and their supportive parents! Again Congratulations Joshua! Keep up the great work!

I am nominating Joshua Adams for this month's Student Spotlight. Joshua recently accepted a position at a local church as their musician. This is a new experience for him and he is fully embracing it by accepting the challenge. YMU has prepared Joshua for a position like this by building a strong musical foundation. This position requires him to learn 3 to 4 songs per week while still keeping up with his studies at school and YMU. The weekly preparation includes finding the key, tempo, and chord charts for the selected songs and choosing the appropriate chords and inversions that best compliment the music. Positions like this also require learning and memorizing song structure, playing by ear, and song improvisation as songs tend to be performed in a free form impromptu manner with changes happening on the spot.

ABOUT JOSHUA

My name is Joshua Adams, I am 16 years old and a junior at Blythewood High School. I have a twin brother named Jasper that plays drums at YMU. I have been on this journey for about nine years and I'm really glad to see how far I have grown these past few years. Mr. Gray is a great teacher. He has always stuck with me, encouraging me to never give up when I was losing motivation. I am also in my high school orchestra where I play the viola. I started in middle school. When I grow up I would like to become a music composer for movies and video games. I love the YMU community where we are always learning new and challenging things.

LISTENING TO MUSIC MAY IMPROVE A BABY’S LANGUAGE SKILLS 10 Music Education Works

11

Adding music to a baby’s playtime may improve its language skills and ability to process musical rhythms, according to researchers from the University of Washington, USA.

The researchers found that incorporating music into a series of play sessions boosted 9-month-old babies’ brain processing of speech and music. They found that the babies listening to the waltz learned its tempo When the tempo was changed, the babies immediately ti d it's tempo When the tempo was changed, the babies immediately noticed. Lead researcher Patricia Kuhl and her colleagues explain that like music, language also has rhythmic patterns, as the timing of the syllables can differentiate one speech sound from another to understand what a person is saying. This ability to distinguish speech sounds helps babies learn to talk.
