STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Braylon Ferguson

CONGRATS!!

Our student spotlights recognize students who are exceptionally demonstrating growth and musically excelling. We are so grateful to be associated with these fantastic students and their supportive parents! Again, congratulations Braylon! Keep up the great work!

ABOUT BRAYLON

"I am a 7th grader at Longleaf Middle School. This is my 6th year playing drums and being taught by Mr. Jenkins. I love learning about animals, especially Dinosaurs, which are my favorite. I like how at YMU we learn music to play in concert performances, and I enjoy learning more about playing the drums. I want to continue practicing to improve and become a good drummer."

Braylon is working really hard to bring his playing up to the next level. What impresses me is that he's also learning a second instrument (the trombone). I see him making the correlation between the two instruments. One thing that I appreciate as his teacher, is that he holds himself to a high standard.

He comes in with the mindset that he's capable of learning everything on the first try There are some days when I see him struggling and getting frustrated I'll ask him "What's wrong?" thinking I may be pushing him too hard. His answer, to sum it up, is that he knows he can do it. In my experience, I don't come across many people who care like that. As a teacher, I sincerely appreciate this kind of attitude. I also love that he has a support system (Dad, Mom, and Grandma) that always encourages patience!

Film Scoring

What is a film score?

A film score is an original piece of music that is written and tailored for a specific film Film scores are composed to enhance a film’s story and emotion. Film score composers create the music for a film based on the direction given from the director The composer often meets with the director to “spot” a film and determine where music should be present.

Film composers are responsible for creating the musical score of a film They work closely with directors, producers and other members of the production team to determine which pieces of music should be used at specific points in the movie. This involves the ability to read and write musical notation, as well as the ability to play an instrument

Film scores are different from a film’s soundtrack. The score of a film is tailored specifically for what is happening in the film on screen

A soundtrack, on the other hand, may contain songs that are independent from the movie itself that were not made solely for the film
