News The Northern Irishman carded a final round of 66 at the Jumeirah Golf Estate to finish 21-under par, enough to end the season as Europe’s top player. Having trailed overnight leader Andy Sullivan through the front nine, McIlroy made his move on the way home as a flurry of birdies saw him overtake his playing partner to finish atop the leaderboard. Consecutive birdies at five, six and seven saw McIlroy go out in 33 but he remained one adrift of Sullivan with nine holes to play. That all changed as the world number three turned
on the style, a sublime chip from the edge of the green at 14 setting up a third birdie in four holes as he moved ahead. Even a bogey at the parthree 17th after finding the water from the tee could not derail him, the 26-yearold sinking a sublime long distance putt to ensure his lead was only cut by one going down the last. McIlroy’s rival in the Race to Dubai, Danny Willett, started well but after four birdies by the 10th he was unable to keep going. Five pars followed before back-to-back bogeys ended any hope he had of catching McIlroy, Willett eventually
finishing in a tie for fourth on 13-under par after a final round of 70. Branden Grace secured third spot on his own at 15 under with a birdie-laden 67, while Emiliano Grillo, Matthew Fitzpatrick, Charl Schwartzel, An Byeong-hun and Francesco Molinari joined Willett on 13 under. Molinari’s impressive charge up the leaderboard began with a hole in one at the sixth, and after two bogeys he finished with a flourish, four birdies seeing him card a 68. Shane Lowry finished in a tie for 48th after a final round 73.

Captain Clarke ‘up for’ EurAsia challenge
T
eam Europe Captain, Darren Clarke has thrown down the gauntlet ahead of the highly anticipated second edition of the EurAsia Cup presented by DRBHICOM against Asia from January 15-17, 2016.
“I think we can win, I know we can win and I hope we will win,” said Clarke today. “Team Europe is coming here to win. I’ve got to beat my old friend Jeev (Milkha Singh, the Asian captain). I can’t have Jeev beat me. I’m looking forward it.” Clarke, who is also nonplaying captain of Europe’s Ryder Cup team, visited the host venue, the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club in ISSUE 15

preparation for the intercontinental team match play showdown which ended in a thrilling 10-10 draw in 2014. The Ulsterman, a 14-time European Tour winner, one-time Major champion and a five-time Ryder Cup team member, said he had no hesitation about leading Europe in the EurAsia Cup. In the first edition, Spaniard Miguel Angel Jimenez was nominated by previous Ryder Cup captain Paul McGinley to lead Europe at Glenmarie. Clarke also believes Europe’s famous team spirit will see them prevailing this time. “They (European Tour) spoke to me about it some time ago and I wanted to do it myself. I know Paul had Miguel do it last year
but I wanted to be more involved with the guys and to get closer to the guys to make some decision and to see how they react. I’m excited about it.,” said the 47-year-old. “The team spirit is massive and certainly with the Ryder Cups. The team spirit has been a huge part of Europe’s success and I hope to replicate that when the guys are here in January. “I think to be captain of the Ryder Cup is the highest honour that The European Tour can bestow us as members. Then to have the opportunity to be captain of the EurAsia Cup is also a huge honour because I can only see the EurAsia Cup going only in one direction ... I see it only going bigger and bigger and bigger.”

Bearsted retrieve the Kent Super Seniors trophy In its 13th year of operation, Kent’s Super Seniors League for Over70s this year comprised 30 clubs playing in five regional groups, and the winners of each group played a Grand Final at Chestfield on Tuesday 13 October.
Teenage champs in new look squad
The five Bearsted pairs, achieved their fourth win in the last six years and carried off the Rochester & Cobham Cup with an aggregate better ball stableford total of 173 points, 5 points ahead of 2ndplaced Knole Park’s 168. Broome Park scored 166, Sene Valley 152 and Birchwood Park 151.
They are among seven newcomers to the squad after a number of players switched to professional ranks.
The England women’s squad includes seven members of the previous line-up, among them English amateur champion Bronte Law and English stroke play winner Sammie Giles.
The others are: Jamie Bower, Alfie Plant, Jonathan Thomson, Sean Towndrow and Ashton Turner.
They will be joined by four new players: Emma Allen, Eloise Healey, Sophie Lamb and Lizzie Prior.
Although the course was in excellent condition, a bitter wind and lightning greens made scoring difficult, but two pairs, Bill House & Geoff Edden of Knole Park and Grahame Waters & Ken Palmer of Bearsted each achieved 40 points.

Moving with the times at North Downs GC
W
oldingham’s historic golf club, North Downs Golf Club is not just a golf course, it is a Golf Club known for the friendliness and welcome from its members and staff. Peter Alliss also described the Club as “A gem of a course in Surrey” - and it is easy to see why. Set on the North Downs at between 800 and 850 feet above sea level and said to be the highest course in Southern England, the 5,815 yards, SSS 69 course is challenging, requiring careful shot selection and accuracy to cope with the

demands of the layout but more importantly is enjoyable with spectacular views from many parts of the parkland course. The terrain is gentle with varied views – and from the 14th and 15th tees, you can see London in the distance, picking out Crystal Palace, The Shard and the Gherkin. Each of the holes has its own name to reflect its make-up. Established with just 5 holes in 1899, the course was extended to 9 holes in the early 20th century, and in 1971 to the current 18 hole layout. The course is always kept in good condition and the Clubhouse is a comfortable, traditional style building with bar

and catering facilities. As part of its commitment to developing golf in the area, the Club has completely refurbished and redesigned its former Pro Shop area and installed a state of the art golf simulator. Together with the new indoor teaching and practice facility, particularly ideal during the wet and cold winter months, the club offers excellent teaching from its associate professional, Ewan Campbell.
By deciding to be innovative in its wish to encourage a wide range of membership opportunities, the club is aware that attracting new

Club Feature members is a challenge – in essence there are too many clubs for the numbers of golfers looking for membership; coupled with the demands placed upon the aspiring club golfer in terms of available time, North Downs has an innovative solution. A 7-hole membership playing a natural ‘loop’ on the course, starting and finishing at the Club House. At an annual cost of £350 with no joining fee there is no restriction on the number of 7-hole rounds you can play. Each round of 7 holes will take a maximum of 1.5 hours. With a mostly flat terrain; a ‘par’ of 28, including one par five and a par three, the course is well balanced with three of the par fours well over 400 yards in length – this offers a great challenge for all levels of golfer. The membership includes use of the Club’s chipping, putting and practice areas and the fully interactive golf simulator (at additional cost), plus

a Member’s Club card allowing a discount of 15% on drinks from the bar and full rights to access the Club House, its catering, social functions and changing facilities. The 7-hole course has its own stroke index and a ‘non-official’ Club 7-hole handicap is offered either calculated from an official Club handicap held elsewhere or allocated from the submission of three cards played over the 7-hole course. This new membership enables golf at a very reasonable price and is an exciting competitive and social opportunity – whilst not committing the member to a huge financial outlay for a round in less than 1.5 hours. So if you are new to the game, or a seasoned player who is either looking for a second ‘more local’ club, and this membership ticks the boxes, then you really should call. You can also join the club
as a 7 or 5 day member or take advantage of the Flexible Membership package to get the best from your time and golf experience. You could even ‘Try before you buy’ and join for 3 months for £350 and play as much as you like, get a CONGU handicap, a membership card entitling you to 15% off bar drinks, attend social events - and if you then join as a full member the £350 will be deducted from your subscription. North Downs has joined forces with Chipstead, Epsom, Redhill & Reigate and Reigate Heath to form the Surrey Hills Golf Clubs Alliance. This allows members the opportunity of playing local courses for a reduced green fee. Added to the twilight membership for only £555 per year, every hole is covered! Turn your Golf Swing into a Baseball Swing for more Power In the sporting world the golf swing has a brother which could actually be described almost like an identical twin. Would you believe the closest technique to golf is the Baseball swing!
T
he only noticable difference between the two sports is the spine angle used for the swing which is really linked to where the ball is hit from.
To hit a baseball in mid air you have to be stood up straight and to hit a golf ball off the floor for golf you need to be bent over from the waist roughly between 30 - 45 Degree’s. When it comes to the arm swing and body movements they are practically identical! This really highlighted one thing for me, most golfers try to swing more up and down rather than more around their bodies.

Start by taking your normal stance and grip then lif the club up untill its level with your chest. Then swing the club around your body horizontally making sure the club head stays under shoulder height on the way back and through.

She has sealed an impressive season in which she made an impact in women’s golf as well as junior events, by winning the girls’ Order of Merit. Lizzie tied second in the English women’s amateur and also set a women’s record on the New course at Sunningdale, en route to winning the Critchley Salver. The win in the girls’ order of merit means she signs off in style from junior golf. The 18-year-old from Burhill in Surrey said: “Getting this title was a great achievement for me. Now Lizzie is aiming to get in the world top 50, to win the freshman of the year title and the English amateur. “I want to continue to keep progressing and getting better both physically and mentally,” she said. “I also intend to start pushing myself harder to go pro in the next two years.”

Get into Golf with Felicity Dunderdale
This month, guest columnist Felicity Dunderdale , founder of FORE! Women, looks at what you should expect from your first golf taster session.
P
rogressive golf clubs wanting to attract more women to the game will know that today’s free taster session creates tomorrow’s new members.
clothes and sensible flat shoes - definitely no heels! As for mobiles, keep them on silent, but feel free to take a selfie or two to share with friends.
The true aim of a good taster session is for ladies to have fun so they want to come back another day. There is so much that makes up golf that you are not going to understand the whole game just from one lesson, but it should give you more confidence when it comes to hitting a ball. There is normally about eight to 10 people in a taster session which is run by the golf professional. There might be one or two ladies who know a bit about golf, but most of you will be in the same boat, complete novices but with an enthusiasm to learn. Arrive a few minutes early so the golf pro can ask a few questions to find out what you do and don’t know.
These days, I don’t even take my phone with me when I am playing as I want to completely relax and switch off from outside influences. Be prepared for the word `tee’ to crop up in almost every other sentence the golf pro says.
All of the equipment is supplied so you just have to turn up wearing comfortable
He or she will show you how to hit the ball off the tee – that is from the teepeg while you are standing on the tee between the tee markers. Got it? Actually, if you are completely new to the game, none of this matters as a good coach will guide you and by the end of your first session you will be fluent in `tee’ speak. In the two hour taster session you won’t get to play a game, but you will at least have a go with the various clubs from different
practices areas around the golf course. While the normal golf etiquette is to be quiet while someone is taking a shot, a taster session is a far more relaxed affair. Invariably, you will all be having a go at the same time, so plenty of opportunity to chat and give words of encouragement to your fellow newbies. I’ve been told that when a ladies’ taster session is in full swing, you can hear more sounds of laughter echoing across the golf course than on normal days. And that is what it should be about – fun and the enjoyment of learning something new. By the end of the taster session you will know if golf is for you. And if it is, get your next session booked in before you leave, and make the most of any offers and discounts the golf club should be providing to entice you to come back again. As we say in golf, strike while the golf iron is hot!”
*Felicity Dunderdale, a PGA level 1 coach, has helped introduce more that 65 women to golf in the past year by organising taster sessions with progressive golf clubs.
