PHRASAL VERBS FORM/FUNCTION 1. Phrasal verbs are very common in English. A phrasal verb consists of a verb + a particle. A particle is an adverb (ad-verb) such as up, down, away, out. A verb followed by a particle has a different meaning from the verb alone. Sometimes we can guess the meaning of a phrasal verbs. We stood up. ( We got on our feet from a seated position) 2. Sometimes we cannot guess the meaning of a phrasal verb. In these cases, we have to learn the special meaning of a phrasal verb. I’ll look up the word. (I’ll find information about the word in a dictionary.) 3. Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object He suddenly show up . Some of these phrasal verbs can take an object, but the meaning is different. o The plan took off. o We took off our coast because is was too warm. Some transitive phrasal verbs can be followed by a prepositional phrase, but the meaning of the phrasal verb does not change. o o o o

4. Most phrasal verbs are transitive. An transitive verb can take an object. We take off our shoes.
Phrasal verb object There are 2 kinds of transitive phrasal verbs: o Separable o Inseparable 4.1- with separable phrasal verbs, the particle can go before or after a noun object. But when the object is a pronoun (IT), the particle always follows the object.
