PHRASAL VERBS FORM/FUNCTION 1. Phrasal verbs are very common in English. A phrasal verb consists of a verb + a particle. A particle is an adverb (ad-verb) such as up, down, away, out. A verb followed by a particle has a different meaning from the verb alone. Sometimes we can guess the meaning of a phrasal verbs.  We stood up. ( We got on our feet from a seated position) 2. Sometimes we cannot guess the meaning of a phrasal verb. In these cases, we have to learn the special meaning of a phrasal verb.  I’ll look up the word. (I’ll find information about the word in a dictionary.) 3. Some phrasal verbs are intransitive. An intransitive verb cannot be followed by an object  He suddenly show up . (show up cannot take an object). Below are some common intransitive phrasal verbs: Intransitive Phrasal Verbs : The following phrasal verbs are not followed by an object Verb

Some of these phrasal verbs can take an object, but the meaning is different. o The plan took off. o We took off our coast because is was too warm. Some transitive phrasal verbs can be followed by a prepositional phrase, but the meaning of the phrasal verb does not change. o o o o

Bob and June broke up. June broke up with Bob. I get up at 7:00 every day. She got up from her chair when the visitor arrived.

4. Most phrasal verbs are transitive. An transitive verb can take an object. We take off our shoes.

Phrasal verb object There are 2 kinds of transitive phrasal verbs: o Separable o Inseparable 4.1- with separable phrasal verbs, the particle can go before or after a noun object. But when the object is a pronoun (IT), the particle always follows the object.

Separable Phrasal Verbs The object may come after the following phrasal verbs or it may separate the two parts: You have to do this paint job over. You have to do over this paint job. When the object of the following phrasal verbs is a pronoun, the two parts of the phrasal verb must be separated: You have to do it over. Verb
