personal statement

The experience of growing up in rural Vietnam in the 1990s taught me that the security of architecture and the built environment were essential to survival. As a nine-year-old, I helped my mother construct our house, which was modestly made out of vernacular materials, such as mud and straw. These early living conditions and informal experiences drove my curiousity in architecture, and now, even more so, I understand how architecture and construction serve as a driver for the betterment of people, culture, and community.

Exterior landings, as required by Section 1008.1.6, for exit discharge doorways in buildings required to have two or more exits. 49. the emergency power shall provide power for a duraion of not less than 90 minutes and shall consist of storage batteries, unit equipment or an no-site generator. The installation of the emergency power system shall be in accordance with Section 2702. (1006.3) 50. Emergency lighting facilities shall be arranged to provide initial illumination that is at least an average of 1 foot-candle (11 lux) and a minimum at any point of 0.1 foot-candle (1 lux) measured along the path of egress at floor level. Illumination levels shall be permitted to decline to 0.6 footcandle (6 lux) average and a minimum at any point of 0.06 foot-candle (0.6 lux) at the end of the emergency lighting time duration. A maximum-to-minimum illumination uniformity ratio 40 to 1 shall not be exceeded. 51. The exist shall also be connected to an emergency electrical system provided from storage batteries unit equipment or an no-site generator set, and the system shall be installed in accordance with the Electrical Code. For high rise buildings, see Section 403.

(R303.1) 6. A copy of the evaluation report and/or conditions of listing shall be made available at the job site 7. The sprinkler system shall be approved by Plumbing Division prior to installation. 8. Plumbing fixtures are required to be connected to a sanitary sewer or to an approved sewage disposal system (R306.3) 9. Kitchen sinks, lavatories, bathtubs, showers, bidets, laundry tubs and washing machine outlets shall be provided with hot and cold water and connected to an approved water supply (R306.4) 10. Los Angeles City Electrical Test Lab Research Report is required to use an electro-mechanical lift for provided parking spaces. 12. “A maintenance of vehicle lift system (2-levels or more) affidavit” shall be approved and recorded prior to issuing a building permit. 13. A minimum of 50 percent of the nonhazardous construction and demolition waste shall be recycle and/or salvage for reuse in accordance with California Green Building Standards Code, Chapter 4 Division 4.4. (R324) 14. Finish materials including adhesives, sealants, caulks, paints and coating, aerosol paints and systems and composite wood products shall meet the volatile organic compound (VOC) emission limits in accordance with the California Green Building Standards Code, Chapter 4 Division 4.5. (R330) 15. When a vapor retarder is required, a capillary break shall be installed in accordance with the California Green Building Standards Code, Chapter 4, Division 4.5. (R506.2.3.1) 16. Annular space around pipes, electric cables, conduits or other openings in bottom/sole plates at exterior walls shall be protected against the passage of rodents by closing such openings in accordance with the California Green Building Standards Code, Chapter 4, Division 4.4. (R602.3.4.1) 17. The electrical system shall have sufficient capacity to simultaneously charge all designated EV spaces at the full rated amperage of the EVSE. Plan design shall be based upon a 40-ampere minimum branch circuit. A separate electrical permit is required. 18. The service panel or subpanel circuit directory shall identify the overcurrent protective device space(s) reserved for the future EV charging purposes as EV CAPABLE in accordance with the Los Angeles Electrical Code. 19. A copy of the construction documents or a comparable document indicating the information from Energy Code Sections 110.10(b) through 110.10(c) shall be provided to the occupant. 20. For projects that include landscape work, the Landscape Certification, Form GRN 12, shall be completed prior to final inspection approval. 21. Check vavles or anti-drain valves are required on all sprinkler heads where low point drawing could occur. 22. A diagram of the irrigation plan showing hydrozones shall be kept with the irrigation controller for subsequent management purposes. 23. A Certificate of Completion shall be filled out and certified by either the designer of the landscape plans, irrigation plans, or the licensed landscape contractor for the project. 24. A minimum 3-inch layer of mulch shall be applied on all exposed soil surfaces of planting ares except turf areas, creeping or rooting groundcovers, or direct seeding applications where mulch is conraindicated. 25. For soils less than 6% organic matter in the top 6 inches of soil, compost at a rate of a minimum of four cubic yards per 1,000 square feet of permeable area shall be incorporated to a depth of six inches into the soil. 26. Separate plumbing permit is required. 28. Provide ultra low flush water closets for all new construction. Existing shower heads and toilets must be adapted for low water consumption. 29. Shower compartments and walls above bathtubs with installed shower heads shall be finished with a smooth, nonabsorbent surface to height not less than 70 inches above the drain inlet. Section 1210.2.3 Use of water-resistant gypsum backing board shall be as stated in Section 2509.3 30. Water heaters must be strapped to a wall (Sec. 507.3, UPC) 31. Unit Skylights shall be labeled by a LA City Approved Labeling Agency. Such label shall state the approved labeling agency name, produc designation and performance grade rating (research report not required.) 2405.5 32. A copy of the evaluation report and/or conditions of listing shall be made available at the job site. 33. Accessible Route of Travel is defined as "a continuous and unobstructed path connecting all accessible elements and spaces in an accessible building or facility that can be negotiated by a person with a severe disability using a wheelchair and that is also safe for usable by persons with other disabilities." 34. Except within individual dwelling units, an accessible route of travel shall not pass through kithcens, storage rooms, restrooms, closets or other spaces used for similar spaces. (1119A.1) 35. Interior and exterior stairways along accessible route are required to be accessible. (1123A.1, 1115A.1 )
