The ambitious plans will see the bar, sited at the former Royal Pavilion Theatre, transformed in a kaleidoscope of colour, taking visitors on a journey back to the 60s. A New Generation of Musicians and Bands will fill the venue.with music throughout the Summer Season 2021 when and if the Pandemic Restrictions are lifted. Tim Farron MP joins teen Joshua Hunter at his wheelchair fundraiser KIND-hearted guests raised more than £11,000 to help equip a teenage Kendal boy with a new carbon-fibre wheelchair. Guests at the black-tie charity auction night for 16-year-old Joshua Hunter, who has quadriplegic cerebral palsy and curvature of the spine, included MP Tim Farron. The Kendal College student, who loves football and politics, is completely reliant on his wheelchair as he cannot use his arms or legs. However, the NHS metal-framed chair is heavy, cumbersome and virtually impossible for mum Sarah to push on her own. Well-wishers were hoping to raise £10,000, but the event at the Burnside Hotel, Bowness, exceeded that by reaching a total of £11,120. "The event was great fun and for a fantastic cause," said Westmorland and Lonsdale MP Mr Farron. "Joshua is an incredibly bright young man, who is also lovely company. It’s really important we help him achieve the best by getting him the right equipment to meet his potential." Entertainent was provided by top local band the Thieving Magpies filling the dance floor with hits from 60’s and 70’s. Family friend Simon Folks said if £12,000 could be raised the new motorised wheelchair could be fully kitted out and a service plan set up for maintenance. Liverpool FC fan Joshua faces surgery this year at Liverpool's Alder Hey Hospital to insert rods into his back to help his posture. Mr Folks said the new chair would assist this greatly, giving the teen greater comfort and independence. New £20,000 beer garden at The New Inn

Peter Nicholson of the New Inn

Robbie Jay Coplen of The Thieving Magpies

KENDAL based band the Thieving Magpies helped to launch the new beer garden as the Kendal pub has extended a welcome to townsfolk to go and have a pint in his new outside area. Peter Nicholson, who runs the New Inn on Highgate, invested £20,000 in doing up the yard at the back of the hostelry to reflect its past. “I have been looking into the history of the place and it had a stable at the back for 80 horses at one time,” he said… Of course with the advent of coaches, horse-drawn coaches, it was than used for building coaches.” Mr Nicholson has themed the yard accordingly, with updates including turning the old smoking shelter into a ‘barn’ complete with stable door and straw bales. He accepts it is a risky time to have invested the money in a new beer garden, with the hospitality trade reeling from the impact of the coronavirus pandemic, but said: “It’s the old adage, it’s the fittest that survive… You can’t just rest on your laurels thinking ‘people will come in…There’s a lot more businesses out there fighting for a lot less customers.” He said by investing in the beer garden he was hoping his pub would have ‘more attraction’ and would entice customers in. Mr Nicholson, 63, formerly a builder, is also placing a great emphasis on live music, hosting bands at weekends - last Saturday saw the pub welcome blues-rock band The Thieving Magpies(pictured left), while Sunday was the turn of South Lakeland four-piece Every Cloud However, despite the music and the beer garden, business has been no more than steady, but is picking up as the weeks go by. “Initially it was pretty slow, the first weekend,” said Mr Nicholson… Then it started building up… It has improved every week… I could certainly fit a lot more people in.” 43 comments ^ The New Inn is currently open on Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Comprising Alan Whitmore on the keys, Paul Harrison on the guitar and Drummist Ben Steel and Basser Robbie Jay Coplen. The band can not celebrate as they would have liked to do, but invite people to watch Paul and Robbie from the band via a live stream instead. It was a real honour for The Thieving Magpies to take part in such an amazing event.”

They will be playing acoustically from their separate homes from 8pm. If you fancy some live music join them on the live stream from their Facebook page at #thievingmagpies https://www.facebook.com/events/662568964628559 17 comments ^

An array of live bands from across Cumbria have been confirmed for the upcoming Grasmere Guzzler The Annual Beer & Music Festival (Friday 31 August – Sunday 2 September), taking place once again at Tweedies Bar and Lodge. The free family-run event has become a Cumbrian institution since it started 12 years ago, with just 8 sampling ales and a few friends in the beer garden with a single guitar. In contrast, this year’s event will include more than 100 craft beers, alongside a BBQ and stone-fire pizza oven. It will literally be all hands to the pump, as Tweedies draft in extra staff to serve an estimated 8,000 pints over the three days in a specially-erected marquee. Visitors from all corners of the UK will enjoy live music from 25 artists, including home-grown acts ranging from Paper Cranes, blues outfit Thieving Magpies and Bad Transmission, to Cumbrian collective Valparaiso and 7-piece Ponyland. Musicians from Liverpool, the Midlands and the North East are also heading to Grasmere to join the line-up. Bar Manager at Tweedies Bar & Lodge, Alex Goodall, says, “The growth of the Grasmere Guzzler has been phenomenal and it has really added a different dimension to our business, drawing in more younger people and families who enjoy the laid-back vibe and informal atmosphere.

“Craft beers have become increasingly popular in recent years and we’ve now expanded to include lagers, sour beers and imperial stouts as well. We’re also genuinely proud to showcase the thriving local music scene and I think it’s that mix of new musical talent and cutting-edge beers which makes the Grasmere Guzzler a really unique event.” There will be some camping in the garden, which can be pre-booked through Tweedies Bar and Lodge. There is also still limited availability inside the main hotel’s new look bedrooms and their private Mews suites. A full list of the bands taking part in this year’s Grasmere Guzzler includes: Dansi, Bad Transmission, Paper Cranes, Becky Langan, Bowie Beak and Powney, Valparaiso ,Thieving Magpies, Molly Warburton, Ponyland, Anne-Marie Sanderson, Shallamarra, Paddy Rogan, Uncle Carbuncle, Sad Eye’d Puffins, Serene, Freyan, Matt Cowe Plays Chet, Next Stop, Jess Megson, Spiratones, Frejya Burke, Jimi Hodgson and Taffy Thomas For more information about the Grasmere Guzzler, contact: hello@tweediesgrasmere.com / 015394 35300. Thieving Magpies @ Johnny’s Bar, Morecambe 12 February 2022 by Steven Mulhannon published: 12 February 2022 in Gig Reviews North Lancs

The Thieving Magpies have spent much of the last few years receiving lots of attention not only in their native Cumbria but also across the North West region. Tonight’s gig saw them perform in the intimate but impressive surroundings of the newly opened Johnny’s Bar in Morecambe. While it may have initially felt like arandom, if well equiped juxtaposition in terms of venue, their occasional, nostalgic explorations of the music of some of the greats in music down the decades past allied with their “rip roaring” versions of iconic songs lent it a certain aptness in other ways. The Magpies are a four-piece band comprising of Paul Harrison on Lead Guitar and Lead Vocal, Robbie Jay Coplen on Bass Guitar and Vocals, Alan Whitmore on Keyboards and Jake Dakin on Drums. The fascinating twist being in the second set when Harrison and Coplen swap roles to add intrigue and huge variety which makes the performance and spectacle even more fascinating and compelling. Tonight, the opening moments draw from it, the infectious reggae beat set to Steve Miller Band’s “The Joker” leading to an array of mixed genre and a cocktail of genius mixed with a hint of madness with some thoughtful ruminations and serious musical performance thrown in. Such tunes as “Fever” by Peggy Lee and Beatles hits such as “Daytripper” and “Get Back”. All of it livelier, and full of fun than you would find with many other equivalent cover bands containing very competent and serious musicians such as these. Examples of this would be found in “Jumping Jack Flash” by the Rolling Stones and another Reggae Twist to Bill Withers “Ain’t No Sunshine”

Thieving Magpies @ Johnny’s Bar, Morecambe The songs that follow have a disparate, pick and mix feel to them, the band taking advantage of the opportunity to dust down some lesser played tracks from the past. Dakin adds so much illumination to the suitably energetic percussion. Which merged with Robbie Coplen strongly defined and extremely creative bass lines makes a formidable back line. Equally impressive is experienced piano/keyboard player Alan Whitmore who adds huge dimension with Piano and Organ work both in holding the glue for the songs but also providing some soaring solos as well. In the second set Robbie Coplen takes the lead and Paul retreats to the bass. Versions of songs such as “Love Me two times” by TheDoors and songs you least expect like “Tore Down” by Freddie King are delivered with such powerful entertainment and building to an amazing finish with “Stuck in the Middle” and Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary”. Everybody really enjoyed themselves and Harrison returned to lead vocal to deliver a version of Bob Marley’s “Stir it Up” which included a fascinating Medley of known songs such as “Stop your messing around” and “The Tide is High” by Blondie. All in all the gig provided an evening of “Cracking” Entertainment with a strange sense of mystery as many of songs did follow the normal pattern of a cover version. If you haven’t caught the Thieving Magpies yet then you need to. They are fun-packed group of entertainers and blessed with immense musical talent. All four members providing solos and high quality delivery with their instruments. I thoroughly enjoyed both the venue and the performance. “You're simply the best covers band I've seen for years!”

“I had sweet dreams because of the gig that night!” “When I see you play it becomes my favourite experience displacing the previous one!” I can't say enough about how much I enjoyed the Thieving Magpies. Sometimes there are gigs that break from the norm - for me at least. For a long time, I have “endured” the pub band with it’s lack of variety, space, entertainment and tight unity. Drinking an odd extra pint or 5 to get ourselves through and heck, so we should:- support the local music and keep it live or even alive. We most definitely should. However last Saturday night we didn’t need to make such sacrifice… I was lucky, well much more than lucky… Seriously fortunate to be there! I had sweet dreams because of the gig that night! Fantastic! Everyone commented on the high calibre of the Thieving Magpies band. When I see you play it becomes my favourite experience displacing the previous one. I can’t put my finger on the specifics: the four of you, your talent, your unique presence on the stage, your poise, your smiles, your skills. I’ve decided the “M” in Magpies stands for “Magic”. What an impressive performance, you're simply the best covers band I've seen for years". Thanks, you all for the experience. K>H (Attending Kings Arms Kirkby Lonsdale Gig)

The Thieving Magpies illuminate a lively bunch at Tweedies Bar in Grasmere with their Bluesrock bangers and refreshing energy! Live Review by Katie Danstone | 14 September 2019 ★★★★★

I captured a review whilst on my cheeky second holiday at the back end of the holiday season which transpired to be something of quite an “Indian Summer”. My location?? The heart of the Lake District. The night was definitely still young as an eclectic crowd gathered in the beautiful setting that is Tweedies Bar and Lodge in Grasmere on a warm Saturday night to see The Thieving Magpies. Some people knew them, most didn’t, but soon discovered. The four members of The Thieving Magpies arrive on stage with a beer an.dasmile:SingerPaulHarrison, alsoonLeadguitar,RobbieJayCoplen on Bass, Ben Steel on Drums and Alan Whitmore on Keyboards. They open with a lively “foot tapping” re-working of “The Joker” by the Steve Miller Band with an incredible Jamaican Reggae twist and flavour! They manage to “stamp their own print” on so many songs but still managing to give each track the respect it deserves Filled to the brim with shredding guitar riffs and intricate solos engaged by all the band members including the bass. All displayed with extreme enthusiasm and riotous band energy A man of few words Harrison does enough without much of a conversation to keep the people included and welcome addressing only when necessary but with enough to display aspects of humour and explanation.

The Thieving Magpies illuminate a lively bunch at Tweedies Bar in Grasmere with their Blues-rock bangers and refreshing energy(continued) It’s delightful to watch the Magpies at work through their creative, artistic delivery. “Help Me” by Sonny Boy Williamson, Johnson’s “Sweet Home Chicago” and also covering a great deal of classic Hendrix moving from the literal raging of the whole room with “Voodoo Child” cut back to some deft and smooth delicate moments such as “Little Wing”. Moving from the most positive of track themes such as Marley’s “Stir it Up” to more darker songs, doused in shadows and heartbreak. As they work through their set bringing a surprisingly fresh and modern appeal to these now historic older tracks, their confidence as musicians becomes increasingly apparent, as well as their dynamic closeness and coherence as a group. Drawing on many genres mixing Blues, Rock, Reggae, Funk and even a hint of Soul most clearly demonstrated in their rendition of Little’s Walter’s “Mellow Down” with an “out of the blue” medley adding James Brown’s “Sex Machine”. Finishing the set is their re-working of JJ Cale’s After Midnight, which begins with an infectious guitar riff before launching into the most infectious funky floor filler. The Thieving Magpies are one of Cumbria’s finest local bands and the key to their success, for me, is their evident excitement at being here; without “fuss” or “ego” they make the performance all the more enjoyable. The most striking aspect is that the band are always clearly having a great time, performing with impressive energy. In conclusion: well: crafted, genuine, spontaneous, creative, inventive, very different and always loads of fun!

The Thieving Magpies Published by Live Music Review| 09 March 2020 ★★★★★ "Paul Harrison and Alan Whitmore were back at Bootleggers Bar in Kendal last night, but this time they brought with them founding drummer Ben Steel and their new bass player Robbie Jay Coplen, and if those names sound familiar, it is because they are The Thieving Magpies.

Now in their fourth year as a band, they have really grown in popularity and the bar was packed out which demonstrates their popularity in the Lake District. With the amount of talent on stage being simply awesome, the evening began as always with Steve Miller's The Joker, but soon moving into the Blues Genre with Help Me by Sonny Boy Williamson and from then on the blues just never stopped. Included in the first half were Stop Breaking Down by Robert Johnson, Hoochie Coochie Man and the classic Mojo Calling With Harrison displaying a master class in lead and slide guitar with the likes of Rolling and a Tumbling and No Fault of Mine He makes it all seem really simple. Not to be outdone was Alan Whitmore on rip roaring piano and hammond organ with some incredible solo work.

The Thieving Magpies (continued) With each song having its own unique style arranged by the band bringing their own personal arrangement with a stage presence which was engaging, informative and funny, and with each band member having had other careers outside of The Blues Band, the set list was varied and interesting. When members of the audience hit the dance floor the band moved into a different phase bringing Funk Riff versions of Mellow Down Easy medley with James Brown's Sex Machine and also J J Cale's After Midnight.which kept their feet to show their appreciation. Even Coplen on the bass struck out with some amazing bass solo work with swift smart melodic structures mixed with a soul and funk vibe". A final medley of the Trogg's Wild thing and another classic Johnson hit Sweet Home Chicago brought the evening to an amazing finale. Included in these final moments was the incredible Ain't No Sunshine By Bill Withers (video included)/ So my summary and my concluding remarks are... If you are looking for a free entry gig which gives you a night to remember then the Thieving Magpies are the band for you! “Well I proper enjoyed that... Ta!!”

Thieving Magpies at the Miners Arms in Ulverston I have been meaning to write up my notes since September and now in Christmas holidays I did it! So here goes: A beautiful late summer evening is almost perfect despite the COVID-19 Pandemic Restrictions at the Miners Arms in in a little hamlet outside Ulverston in Cumbria called Swarthmoor. We were staying with my best friends Kate and Bryan but because of work commitments they couldn’t make it. They missed it! Landlord Stuart sat on his stool at the gate and really made me feel welcome as did his staff at the bar. I was seated in the outside garden and stage area together with the for-mentioned bar and inside organised to great allowing plenty attend including sometables children and families. Stilldetail not too sure how wetowere allowed to be there, but we were, and as the sun began to set, I sat with a glass of chilled white wine which set things up nicely in this melancholic mood. I was looking forward to the live music, but I honestly didn’t expect to hear fast, rhythmic, rocking but also sensitively soulful blues being delivered by popular local band the Thieving Magpies. As an all-seated gig due to the pandemic this did not hinder for one moment. Some local followers and known people to the band were sat waiting obviously excited to see their friends perform again, whilst those who them for the arewith about becomeReggae fans. Kicking off are withseeing the Steve Miller hit first “Thetime Joker” anto amazing beat I had never expected in a song like that followed by a blues song called “Help Me” which I later discovered was by an old guitarist called Sonny Boy Williamson

Thieving Magpies at the Miners Arms in Ulverston(Continued)

A contrast in style and genre kept you guessing. “Ain’t No Sunshine” by Bill Withers and then something else I never expected? A run of Jimi Hendrix songs, “All along the Watchtower” and “Little Wing” two of my absolute faves. Brilliantly delivered I might add with a switch between electric guitar and even piano solo. All this served to instantly hit home with their deep bluesy style, full of catchy riffs and quite deep dusky vocals but still full of power. On they go with their set that just lifts everyone into a totally different plain, with songs like the Lynyrd Skynyrd classic “Sweet Home Alabama”, “Daytripper” by the Beatles and even a rendition of “Sex Machine” by James Brown and this led to another twist which was an infectious funk style beat. That was hard not to dance to and certainly kept everyone feet tapping under the picnic benches and temporary tables.Interspersed amongst the songs the band clearly display their enthusiasm and its obvious they are thoroughly enjoying themselves. Despite this for a local band they delivered their set with a really high level, pedigree and source of talent. They were paly in a relaxed easy and chilled manner whilst producing a tight musical performance that can’t help but soothe the savage soul with infectious tapping rhythms and emotionally charged lyrics. This was definitely one of the most entertaining, well prepared and delivered gigs I have seen for some time and their style builds a mansion of bluesy delights that if I wasn’t so self-conscious in the age of social distancing would have caused me to gaze, mouth open in awe and wonderFor a local band gig in my opinion this was unique, inspiring, vivid and genuinely authentic musically. Honestly if you are anywhere near the north west and certainly near this band. Just go see the Thieving Magpies. It will be one of the best decisions you will make.

THE BEATLES THEMED PUB IN BLACKPOOL By Beatles Magazine Posted on Friday 26th February 2021 0 THE BEATLES 15

Plans for Hamish Howitt’s Scots Bar, Rigby Road which will undergo a conversion into a Beatles themed pub Hamish Howitt says it has been a long-time dream to dedicate his pub of 23 years to his all-time favourite band, The Beatles. Now, in a first for Blackpool, and as part of a major renovation project, Hamish and the extended Howitt family are working to make the publican’s grand vision a reality, opening the Beatles-themed Yellow Submarine Pub Ltd at the Scot’s Bar in Rigby Road, South Shore. The ambitious plans will see the bar, sited at the former Royal Pavilion Theatre, transformed in a kaleidoscope of colour, taking visitors on a journey back to the 60s. The landlord, who has lived in the town since 1967 after hitchhiking a ride home from London, said he was passionate about the project which will mark a new era for the bar. “I’ve been all over the world and no other band in history has made the cultural impact of the Beatles,” he said. “The North West was their home but I’ve been sat in a bar in Indonesia, where the wall was covered in Beatles pictures and tracks playing, also in Singapore, Dubai, Cairns in Australia… They were a global phenomenon

THE BEATLES THEMED PUB IN Hamish continues: “ It seemed crazy there were bars all over the world yet not in BLACKPOOL Blackpool. I’d toyed with the idea eight years ago, it’s been niggling and niggling at By Beatles Magazine

me.I’m nearly 68 so I said it’s going to be now or never. My boys are huge fans of the band too and it’s a family project, it’s going to look amazing, I’m totally immersed in it.”

A New Generation of Musicians and Bands will fill the venue.with music throughout the Summer Season 2021 when and if the Pandemic Restrictions are lifted. Alan Whitmore from featured band the Thieving Magpies writes:”This is such an iconic and special place. We are so proud to be apart of this and playing regularly here will be such a fantastic experience. Sonething we are all looking forward too!” Hamish added: “We want to create something special, not just a pub to drink in this is an experience from the moment you walk in the front via the famous Abbey Road zebra crossing. “It will be a magical mystery tour from start to finish, even down to the staff wearing Sgt Pepper inspired uniforms. This is a real work of the imagination “We’re installing state-of-the-art lighting and visuals for the front - plasma screen TVs, the works. It is going to be a real spectacle and that’s what I want it to be somewhere people want to come back to time and time again. It’s going to be fun, vibrant and endearing to the young, right through to the old. Only live bands and singers at peak times, no backing tracks by singers, all live. Our cinema-theatre is one of the oldest purpose-built buildings in the UK - if I don’t do something now, I never will.”
