T HIS A B OVE AL L : TO THINE OWN S E L F B E T RU E Nearly a year ago when I began this publication I had no idea of all the obstacles I would face; partnership changes, a full scale re-brand and a global pandemic. All of this on top of normal new business growing pains. I’ve thrown everything I have into this magazine. I’ve tried my hardest to stretch creative boundaries, provide relevance and quality, and represent a broader vision of love. So much blood, sweat, and tears (like so many tears) have been spilled into these pages. I was always the overwhelmed bride, the odd bride, the one constantly searching for something offbeat in an industry rooted in tradition. I’ve been so passionate about this publication from the start because it allowed me to create something for others like me; a creative, elegant, effortless vision of love and unity. I hope you can feel that passion as you browse these pages. I hope you’re reassured by the couples before you; I hope you’re excited by the expertise of the industry professionals we showcase. Above all else, I hope you’re inspired to create a wedding day all your own. Issue 01: We made it. Here’s to many more! Editor Juliana Jumper

THOSE COVI D WEDDING WOE S couples, venues, & vendors get creative with wedding solutions of pandemic proportions

Thi ne S tori es | 11

When dreaming and setting goals for 2020, weathering a global pandemic never once crossed Amelia Holder’s mind. Holder and her husband own and operate Emerson Fields, a timeless, two-story wedding venue situated on 34 acres just south of Macon, MO. Holder, who has been in the wedding industry for more than 10 years—first as a wedding photographer and more recently as an event space owner—said the pandemic and how it’s affecting the wedding industry is like nothing she’s ever seen. The Holders were fearful of things to come, but overall they’ve been very lucky. Covid-19 has left wedding planners, florists, photographers, caterers, bakeries, venues, calligraphers, hair and makeup artists, rental companies, bridal shops, and so many more in an unexpected position. Emerson Fields has only had one wedding cancellation during the pandemic so far. Most weddings slated between March 21 and May 22 were able to be rescheduled, many for later this year. The one exception to the mid-March to mid-May forced closure came from a couple that needed to get married on their original April date; the wedding happened to be for the Holders’ niece. The couple originally planned for 300 guests, but were forced to limit their guest count to 10 when the big day finally arrived. Holder said they had originally made phone calls to clients telling them they felt a 50 person limit would soon be imposed, but making the second phone call to her niece when she found out she could only have 10 guests was extra bitter. The couple came up with a clever workaround: They live-streamed the ceremony and 50 of their closest friends and family gathered in the venue’s parking

lot for a drive-by reception. Holder said the ceremony was beautiful and touching. Once weddings were allowed to resume mid-May, the venue adhered to the socialdistancing rules mandated by the state and it worked closely with brides on seating charts to group together families and guests who had already been exposed to each other. The venue also offers hand sanitizer stations and moves all the equipment, tables, and chairs themselves so there’s very little contact for couples. Due to the smaller guest counts, Holder says she feels that brides especially have been able to really focus on the here and now and celebrate with the guests that are in attendance. They’ve been given the opportunity to look at their wedding with a different perspective. “A bride thinks they want to have everyone they know at their wedding,” Holder said. “I understand that’s a fun thing, but at the end of the day, it’s really hard to host a party for 300 people and get a chance to visit with everyone and also really enjoy yourself.” Ali Madden, the wedding planner and owner behind Brick & Ivory Events said she started preparing for the worst when she saw the pandemic make its way through Europe. Brick & Ivory originally had 18 weddings for 2020, but Madden predicts she will only have six couples actually get married this year. Madden said she tried to be realistic, rather than an alarmist, and cautiously optimistic with her couples. She checked in with couples several times before things became more pressing in the U.S., and that initial contact really helped when the infections rates began to rise and restrictions were imposed. "Couples were pretty understanding," Madden said.

She made sure that when they discussed postponing versus moving forward with weddings, couples centered their decisions around two priorities. Was it more important for them to get married on their original date or did they want to host the large wedding they envisioned? Once her couples decided, she would update the entire vendor team and plan from there. For couples that are still considering rescheduling, Madden suggests they consider those same priorities and settle on a plan sooner rather than later. “My biggest recommendation is really not to wait too long to decide because you’re more likely to have trouble with planning a new date,” Madden said. “The closer it gets to your wedding date, the more likely your vendors are either going to charge a rescheduling fee or charge a high fee.” Vendors and venues often charge a cancellation or rescheduling fee. Madden says that’s still the case, but that so far it’s been reasonable. She said it’s typically been around $150-$250 from vendors and a little higher for venues. Some have decided not to charge for rescheduling or canceling at all, due to the pandemic being out of couples’ control, but it differs from business to business. Overall, Madden says when talking with clients, who are still on the fence about having their wedding or rescheduling, she’s leaning more towards rescheduling because she fears another shut-down is still possible. All of Madden’s May, June, and July couples chose to reschedule and half of her September and October clients rescheduled, but she did coordinate her first wedding post-shut down, a few weeks ago. The couple required masks, but everyone still had a great time, according to Madden.

Both Holder and Madden agree that in this Covid-era of weddings, communication is key, whether that be with vendors or guests. Holder recommends that couples create a Facebook group for guests or make an announcement on their wedding website to reassure that it’s OK to not attend if you’re feeling ill or uncomfortable. She also suggests to let everyone know where you’ll be live-streaming the event or if you’ll be sharing photos afterwards for those that couldn’t attend. Although weddings may look a little different this year, many have still gone off with few minor hitches, and a whole lot of love. Paxton Boyer, a July bride, posted a letter to other Covid Brides on the Facebook group Kansas City Wedding Swap & Shop. In her letter, Boyer wrote: “I know this isn’t what you had planned. I know this isn’t what you wanted. I know the wedding you’ve dreamed about your whole life is starting to look different. But let me tell you something…I didn’t believe any of these words below until the day came.” She went on to say that throughout the stress and tears, those who loved her kept encouraging her and reminding her that at the end of the day they were getting married, that a wedding is more about the marriage than the actual day, and that the Lord always has a plan, obstacles, and all. Boyer wrote the letter because it had been weighing on her heart and she wanted other brides to know that their feelings were valid. After first posting the letter to her personal Facebook, her mom encouraged her to make it public. So far, it’s been shared nearly 60 times and received more than 600 reactions.

Thi ne S tori es | 13

“It was awesome to see other girls share it and give their feedback,” Boyer said. Boyer expressed that everyone had an amazing time at their July 11 wedding and were even surprised with a sweet treat. Before the wedding, Boyer sent her engagement photos to 7-Eleven, the chain of convenience stores, and they agreed to show up to the event with their signature slushies.

Boyer, who was married at the Farm at Woodend Springs in Bonner Springs, KS, said masks were optional and many of the elderly guests left after the ceremony. Although it was hot, and there were a few minor hiccups, Boyer wrote that everyone had a great time. Her husband, AJ, “slayed” the garter toss, and in the end everything was perfect.

FAM I LY F EUD how to navigate family dynamics and approach relationships when planning a wedding

Thi ne S tori es | 37

Weddings are notorious for swirling up all kinds of emotions, from true elation and complete happiness to anxiety, anger and hurt. Tying the knot can be unexpectedly stressful. You’re not alone, if you feel this way. According to a 2017 survey by Zola Weddings, seven out of eight couples said wedding planning was stressful. Family dynamics and relationships can oftentimes be a major part of that stress. Dori Moore, a clinical social worker and family systems therapist based in Kansas City, says it’s fairly common for couples to run into family issues when saying “I do” because the family system is changing. Whether it’s divorced parents cooperating in the same space, making business decisions about how to pay for a wedding, or not asking a soon to be sister-in-law to be a bridesmaid, weddings can disrupt the balance or organization that previously existed. Moore specializes in the Bowen Family Systems Theory and has been practicing this kind of work since 1978. Dr. Murray Bowen was a psychiatrist and professor at Georgetown University. Bowen was known as one of the pioneers of family therapy and a founder of systemic therapy. Moore says families have an interconnectedness and impact each other in many different ways, and it’s important to remember that when planning a wedding. “Weddings are a life-cycle event and rite of passage that have great opportunity for growth and change,” Moore said. “Families are making the transition with the couple. The family influences the emotional quality of the event, as well.” When discussing this ritual with couples and families, she urges them to keep a few things in mind to help with this transition.

The couple comes first. It’s important to see this ritual as the family going through a transition, however it is the couple’s wedding. It’s an opportunity for the couple to be clear with each other about their values, their principles, and their goals for the celebration. The wedding reflects who they are as a couple and allows them to establish themselves as they separate from their families of origin. In other words: Be clear with your own thinking while still involving both families. The purpose of your wedding is for your family to be a part of this celebration while you still feel the process of leaving the nest and defining your own new course together. Honor weddings of generations before. Think of this as a process of regeneration and an intergenerational process, not just about you as a couple, or your immediate family, but generations before. Be inclusive and acknowledge the marriages that have gone before. That can impact your choices as you proceed as a couple. The triangles are important. See triangles while moving through this process and know that they are inherent in the process of being married. For example, the bride is a part of her family of origin—the triangle is then the bride, groom, and her family as one triangle to navigate. There’s a great deal of wisdom that one can bring to how to handle themselves in a triangle, and the first is to begin to understand the triangle. Know your options. Be aware that life-cycle events have the opportunity to connect people or reinforce reactive patterns. Perhaps somebody is cut off from someone else in the family. A wedding is a time for that relationship to either open to healing or stay closed and cut off. Sometimes putting pressure on a wedding to be the healing event can add stress to the couple. It isn’t always to everyone’s benefit to add that stress for the short term

comfort the day of, but knowing that you have both options is an important step. Keep it light. Practice a playful, lighthearted capacity to interact with others. Even though there may be some difficult parts to this emotional event, playfulness and a lighter approach can often allow people to be more thoughtful and take responsibility in a different way. Ask for help. Everyone can benefit from observing family patterns and the family process when going through a life-cycle event like a wedding. A family systems

coach or emotional coach can help you understand how to take your past through this event. Seeking premarital help as a preventative resource and finding a coach that can help you see the system and how it has functions can be like getting a heads up. Moore says a couple might consider seeking professional help if they feel themselves pulled in different directions when other people are trying to call the shots because of their own discomfort. If a couple feels like they’re not being listened to or heard, by each other, or by other family members, that would be a signal to ask for help.

HOM E SW EET HOM E whether an intimate setting in the backyard or a crowded living room, your chosen space becomes the place you declared your love and became a family.

Thi ne S tori es | 53

Weddings in the age of social distancing leave many couples opting for small, intimate gatherings over large parties. In search of a smaller, nontraditional location to host their celebration many couples are choosing their own backyards, a space already closely associated with family and warmth. Couples have a lot of logistics to consider when choosing to wed at home. A home wedding leaves many of the amenities offered by a dedicated event space to the couple to coordinate: day of vendor coordination, rental items, catering, etc. Beth Long of Events by Beth Long suggests couples consider the following when planning their wedding at home or in an unconventional space: - Do you have an accessible kitchen? - Will my caterer need any outside water or power supply? - Do we have adequate parking? - What is the typical weather that time of year? - What is the guest count and can we fit everyone comfortably? - Are there enough restrooms? - Will we need multiple power outlets or should we consider a generator? Long further suggest couples create their own “A-Team” and stresses to appoint a team lead who is well versed in problem solving and can operate in stressful situations. You’re A-Team can consist of wedding guests, but the team lead should not be your immediate family. Family should be able to enjoy your beautiful wedding to the fullest. Hiring a planner and event designer is particularly beneficial in the cases of at home weddings. These professionals will point you in the right direction of who to hire, how to prepare, and how to best organize your day. In most cases

they can do this for you; leaving you worryfree and open to enjoy your celebration. Jami Van Herke, owner of Good Stuff China, caters her rental company’s upscale offerings to that of intimate event tablescape design. Van Herke’s designs adorn lavish backyard weddings to luxury picnics to high tea. “A misconception of smaller events is that they won’t be as fancy, that they have to skimp on things.” Van Herke stated, “I feel the exact opposite. I think the more intimate the higher quality of services and goods you can implement into your [wedding day.]” Preparing your home and yard for the celebration can become a feat for couples. Beginning these preparations early is important, especially if the event will require additional renovations. Melanie Clouser & Geoffrey White recently faced renovations while preparing their home for their intimate backyard celebration. “I think what was comforting was knowing the money we put into the yard was ultimately adding to the value of our home,” Clouser expressed. “Space planning and preparing our surrounding neighbors for the upcoming event was probably the most difficult obstacle [we faced.] We could have done better with the latter, but time slips away. We only had the cops called on us once and it was right at the end of the evening. I will never forget that!” At home weddings are undeniably romantic. Whether an intimate setting in the backyard or a crowded living room, your chosen space becomes the place you declared your love and became a family. Clouser continued, “The best part about our wedding day was the location. Deciding to have the wedding and reception in our own backyard made it that much more special. It felt so intimate and meaningful. Now every time I look out into our backyard I am reminded of those moments. The memories we made are always lingering.”

I NSPI R I NG LOV E

Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake is a timeless story of love; it mixes magic, romance, and tragedy on the stage. Regarded as a classical ballet, Swan Lake is still celebrated 143 years after its debut. In our Inspiring Love series, we create editorials inspired by classic stories of love. Swan Lake portrays its beauty through the dichotomy of the swans, and is ultimately a testament to the resilience of true love. Swan Lake follows Prince Seigfried as he falls in love with the beautiful Swan Queen, Odette. Under a sorcerer’s curse, Odette must live as a swan on the Lake of Tears by day, while by night she takes on human form. The sorcerer sends Odile, the black swan, to steal the Prince’s heart and stop Odette’s developing romance.

Traditionally the same prima ballerina portrays both swans. However, we chose to contrast our swans by using different models, photographers, and overall mood. Odette wears a classic and elegant bridal style with delicate feathered cuffs. Warm pink and golden hues envelop her. Odile is clad in a custom black feathered gown, her bridal style gothic and bold. Odile’s surroundings match with dark, moody hues. Consistency presents itself in shared ethereal natures while showcasing the swans’ unique qualities.

“Dancing Odette was like imagining myself as silk on water. She has such an ethereal, dreamy, and delicate quality. Opposite of that is Odile, the fiery seductress that’s driven by power and temptation. It was so fun and rewarding for me to bring genuine emotions to each of these beautiful and iconic roles.” Amanda DeVenuta, Kansas City Ballet

“Playing Tchaikovsky for inspiration, I channeled Odile’s sultry and seductive mood with a plunging neckline and back adorned with floating feathers and black orchid velvet lace. I constructed Odile’s look with movement in mind- the silhouette provides a peek into the mystery and beauty of darkness. Contrasting textures carry throughout Odette’s look, signifying her confidence and demise. I chose a lace corset bustier and full ball gown to symbolize structure and fragility.” Veronica Wilcox, Veronica Couture
