Bioluminescence Bioluminescence comes in many other varieties other than the kinds which are found in the bio bay in St. Croix USVI. In fact, the number of animals who emit bioluminescence varies almost as much as the numerous ways the perform it! Some light up their tails, others light their head, some light up their entire body, and some light up stuff we without names! They do it for different reasons as well. The creatures in our bio bay use bioluminescence as a defense mechanism to shine the light on other organisms that predators may want to eat instead. kind of like "Hey, don't eat me....go eat that guy!". There are organisms who use their glow to attract mates, for communication purposes, or even just to light the way so they can see where they're going! Truly, bioluminescence is one of the most amazing phenomenons in nature :)
