Building Information Modeling: Solutions & Tools for Construction 1:00pm – 2:00pm The construction industry, as of late, was becoming less productive, wasteful, and fractured. Many factors have contributed to this decline. However, the industry is evolving to be more collaborative, productive, and efficient using integrated processes and technology. Leveraging BIM in construction provides many advantages such as clearer understanding, informed decision making, risk analysis, construction sequencing, and quality control to name a few. This session will dive into the factors driving the industry into BIM, the technologies influencing this change, and opportunities unleashed by doing so.

Succession Planning for the Next Generation 1:00pm – 2:00pm An in depth look at succession planning from the eyes of a contractor who is the next generation. This will be a great perspective for the future generation to see but also so the current generation can see how the next generation thinks and feels and what to expect. Presenter: Troy Corrigan,

Managerial Success – Who’s with Me? 1:00pm – 2:00pm Behind many successful companies, stand strong managers and behind strong managers are talented employees motivated to accomplish corporate goals. Managerial success and profit go hand-in-hand. By proactively tending to the many facets of leadership, staff nuances, and business growth, managers can maximize efficiencies, promote talent, and build commitment within their team. This interactive seminar will review talent management, employee incentive programs, professional communication standards, employee loyalty, and team unity. We will uncover how to create a healthy work environment and then how to convert that employee happiness into strong loyalty and productivity. Presenters: Spenser Villwock

and Kristin Kim Haynes, IEC Rocky Mountain, Denver, Colorado

Deadly Deals: Counterfeits Can Kill 2:30pm – 3:30pm

Soares Grounding and Bonding 1:00pm – 2:00pm This seminar is a must for those who wish to keep informed and increase their expertise in the grounding and bonding of electrical systems. Completely revised to the 2014 IEC National Electrical Code, this seminar is based on the authoritative text IAEI Soares Book on Grounding, which clearly explains the fundamentals and practice of grounding and bonding in easily understood language. Dozens of new and revised colored illustrations set forth, with accuracy and in detail, the principles of grounding and bonding. Presenter: Keith Lofland,

International Association of Electrical Inspectors, Richardson, Texas

Every contractor wants to keep costs low, but at what expense? Sourcing products online or from unauthorized dealers not only puts your clients in danger but also your business, as this puts you at greater risk of purchasing counterfeit products. The International Anti-Counterfeiting Coalition (IACC) estimates that the prevalence of counterfeit products has increased over 10,000 percent in the past two decades. This session will give an overview of the prevalence and scope of the counterfeiting problem in the electrical industry as reported by a survey conducted by the Electrical Safety Foundation International earlier this year. After reviewing the potential implications of using counterfeit electrical products, such as legal liability, Brenner and Grace will provide tips and information to help the audience avoid the purchase and use of counterfeit electrical products while on the job. Utilizing Technology to Maximize Profitablity 2:30pm – 3:30pm On a nearly daily basis, there are numerous advances being made in technology and software innovation. Being awarded a project is not a guarantee that it will be profitable to your bottom line. Profitability heavily depends on successfully bringing an estimate through the project management process. Estimating and project management tools are not enough these days; using the tools properly and more precisely is crucial! Contractors need to be aware of the current technology available and how these tools can create a more effective and productive environment for their company – regardless of their size or type of work. Integrating estimating and project management technology can help your company become a success story and increase your bottom line – maximizing profitability! Next Generation Communication: Transcend Generations with Advanced Communication Skills 2:30pm – 3:30pm For the first time in history there are four generations in the workplace, each with a preferred way of communicating. With the rise of the Millennials (also known as Generation Y, the largest generation on Earth), technology, and social media, it has become increasingly difficult to communicate in our noisy, 24/7 connected culture. You call, they e-mail, and the others text (while sitting right next to you)! Change is inevitable but the development of next generation communication skills must be intentional. Presenter: Ryan Jenkins, Next Generation Catalyst, Atlanta, Georgia

Who needs EFCA? The Obama NLRB’s Payback to Organized Labor 1:45pm – 3:15pm The Employee Free Choice Act failed in 2009. Since then, the Obama Administration has managed to implement the most drastic elements of EFCA without ever having to deal with a single Republican member of Congress. New decisions and rules by federal agencies have made union organizing easier for labor organizations and more difficult for employers to resist. In 2014, the final elements of the President’s payback were delivered to Organized Labor – the NLRB Election Rule Changes and the Department of Labor’s new “Persuader Rules.” These developments have prompted employers to revise their union avoidance strategies to meet game-changing challenges. Employers that do not change and retool their union-

Grow Your Business By Leveraging New Opportunities in the 2014 NEC 1:45pm – 3:15pm The electrical industry spends hours in training to understand the changes in the 2014 NEC that will ensure electrical safety for our community. Electrical code revisions also serve as a significant catalyst that enables investment, resulting in tangible economic value for the entire electrical industry and the community in which the investment is made. There is compelling economic benefit for contractors to support immediate adoption of the most current electrical code by their state. This program will review a few key revisions that can open opportunities for the electrical industry with their customers.

Construction productivity has historically lagged other industries, as shown in this seminar. Until it is correctly measured, it cannot be improved. The method of measurement has alienated the labor; as a result the outcome is data that is not useful. By measuring productivity changes during construction at the task, project, and industry levels, issues can be resolved early enough to reduce waste and minimize errors. This seminar will teach the principle, exercised successfully by other industries, of measuring productivity from the operator’s point of view. The participants will learn how to establish a useful productivity measuring method. This will help them to improve productivity by making it more visible. How to Exit Your Business Without Getting Clobbered by Taxes: Different Paths, Values & Taxes 3:30pm – 5:00pm The owner’s exit will probably be the largest financial event of their life. Unfortunately, over 70 percent of these exits/transfers will fail with the owner fumbling the ball in the red zone and settling for 10 percent of the company value in liquidation. The presentation will share a top 20 ENR specialty contractor’s authentic story with his struggle to find the path and then lead a proprietary process with case studies demonstrating millions in efficient tax planning. He did not come to understand “what he did not know” until completing his certified exit training and teaming with professional advisors. This presentation reveals mistakes and solutions to achieve the best bottom line results for the owner. Remember, it is not about how much you get but about how much you keep when exiting your company.

Great Idea Swap 3:30pm – 5:00pm This is an interactive, thought-provoking session. The price of admission for this unique session will be one great idea. The idea can be something as simple as a great mobile app that increases efficiency in the field, a software program that is saving the company money, or an idea that a foreman implemented to save time. These ideas will be shared with all the attendees of the session. This will be fun and informative and result in many new ideas you can take back to your company. 2014 NEC – What Changed and Why I Should Care 3:30pm – 5:00pm More than 3,700 proposals were submitted to revise the 2011 National Electrical Code. While all of these did not make the cut, many did. Some changes offer a clarification of the Code, and some of the changes are there to help make the Code more user friendly. Most of the changes have been implemented to safeguard persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity. There are minor changes that will have little impact on the electrical contractor, and there are major changes that could have a significant impact on the electrical contractor. This session will cover the top changes that are in the 2014 National Electrical Code. Presenter: Charles Miller, Lighthouse

Industrialization/Globalization/ Breaking Through 10:00am – 11:00am Until recently, the construction industry has suffered a technology bypass, relying on centuries-old processes and procedures to manage complex, modern projects. Today, however, the same software applications that make manufacturing industries efficient are being deployed in building construction. Construction industry players who don’t step up to the challenge of modernizing their processes will hold the entire industry back. Unless prompt action is undertaken, these companies will be surprised by new companies that efficiently capitalize on the massive economic opportunities that present themselves in this rapidly growing industry sector. As an apprentice, you pretty much know what is next: get through school and attain your Journeyman status. Then what? Do I want to stay in the field and become a foreman that runs projects? What do I need to learn to do that? Do I want to become a project manager someday? How can I make that happen? The good news is there are specific things any of these paths have as criteria to get you there. We will discuss and build what those things are for the different jobs that are available in our industry. Presenter: Bruce Seilhammer, SECCO, Inc., Camp Hill, Pennsylvania

The Essential Crash Course for Sizing Conductors 11:15am – 12:15pm

Did you know... The Star-Spangled Banner (the actual flag) was sewn in Baltimore and a piece of it is on display in Baltimore at the Star-Spangled Banner Flaghouse.

While selecting the correct size conductor is not difficult, more is involved than selecting a conductor based solely on the ampacity shown in Table 310.15(B)(16) in the National Electrical Code (NEC). Many factors are involved, such as the temperature ratings of terminations, conductors, and devices; the connected load or the load calculated in accordance with Article 220; continuous and noncontinuous loads; ambient temperature; and the number of current-carrying conductors. Other factors, such as overcurrent protection provisions in Article 240, must also be considered when sizing a conductor. Certain questions must be answered in order to accurately select the correct size conductor. This session is the essential crash course for sizing conductors. Presenter: Charles Miller,
