Principal’s Message As the last week of term begins and Carol Service rehearsals bring a reverent peacefulness to the busyness of life it’s safe to say pupils and staff alike are looking forward to the holiday. Exams in January mark the half-way stage in the year in terms of formal assessment of pupil progress and everyone has been working hard on the use of marked assessment tasks (MATs) and Tracking Tuesdays as stepping stones so pupils can be confident of having a period of rest during the holidays after a busy but productive winter term. The other staples of the winter term such as our musical production, Oliver!, language exchange trips, Remembrance and early stages of competitions bring a sense of reassurance that investment in life-long experiences and a culture of mutual respect is as fulsome as ever. A whole host of musical, sporting, cultural, social and charitable occasions and events fill the daily calendar as our pupils enjoy both participation and successes outside the classroom so we trust you will enjoy the snapshot presented here as this way marker of the academic year. Our ongoing and daily focus at whole school level is investment in a culture of respect and aspiration. In that regard, worthy of highlight this term is the often seemingly unending work invested to promote online safety, including a cross-school workshop with The Diana Award, Hour of Code with Liberty IT as well as education on consent and anti-bullying to coincide with Antibullying Week in November. Our 6th form formal at the Clandeboye Lodge was a relaxed and congenial affair that epitomised all that we are proud of in our young people and at the other end of the spectrum Yr8 are a lively bunch, brimming with exuberance and potential! I thoroughly enjoyed spending time recently visiting Yr11 classrooms too; there is ambition and there is partnership with staff, both augur well for the future. The Careers department has been busy with the preparation of UCAS applications for Yr14 pupils and running careers interviews for Y12s who very soon will be making choices for further study or for entering the world of work. Mock Results Day for them is on 29th January and our Careers Convention on 23rd January, which operates in partnership with Ballyclare Secondary School, marks the next step in that regard for both Yr10 and 12 pupils before subject choice evenings in early February. Parent consultation evenings for our three senior year-groups were very well attended. Our Yr8 parent consultation was equally affirming and we are pleased with levels of pupil engagement and involvement across the board. Updates from respective Heads of Year provide you with more detailed year-group specific news. We are also delighted this term to see our astro-turf and gravel pitches and fencing refurbished, lift access provided to the languages block and, after all the long negotiations, work to replace guttering and facia is starting in January. In the current financial climate all such support from the EA is most welcome and I take this opportunity to thank you for your School Fund payments and support of the PTAFA so we can continue to focus our efforts on provision of the current rich curricular and co-curricular offer that benefits your child directly. Every penny is invested with the utmost care. My final word goes to our top exam candidates; congratulations to those pupils in CCEA GCSE Manufacturing, and A level Moving Image Arts and Nutrition and Food Science who have secured the top 3 places in the province in each of these subjects. We are delighted you have this reward and accolade for all your hard work, well done! May I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful New Year,

Dr M Rainey Principal

On the 17th October over 100 pupils and sta from across the province travelled to Ballyclare High School to attend a ‘Be Strong Online Ambassadors’ training event delivered by a team from The Diana Award. 16 of our own pupils were trained as Be Strong Online Ambassadors, alongside Mrs Hill and Mrs Fenton. These students will go on to run online safety campaigns, sessions and assemblies in our school to help their peers increase their digital resilience. Students left the day feeling inspired and full of fantastic ideas to run their own Be Strong Online campaign! The event provided a great opportunity for our students to meet and share ideas with passionate and enthusiastic young people from other schools. Many thanks to Hannah and Maya from The Diana Award for visiting Northern Ireland and giving us this great opportunity!

It was wonderful to welcome Holocaust Child Survivor Joan Salters MBE to Ballyclare High School in October. She told her family’s story of challenge and survival and encouraged us all with her resilience and positivity during this horrific time. Her story really helped us learn about life for those in Europe during the Nazi occupation.

Remembrance Service All pupils participated in Ballyclare High School’s annual Act of Remembrance on Friday 9th November; it was a particularly poignant ceremony this year since it marked the centenary of the armistice which brought about the end of the First World War. Years 10 to 14 gathered to hear the names of past pupils who lost their lives serving in different conflicts from around the world. Rachel Armstrong in Year 13 played the Last Post which was followed by a minute’s silence. Three wreaths were laid in the front entrance hall as a tribute to those who paid the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of the school’s Scout Troop, the Old Ballyclarians Association and the school community. Years 8 and 9 also commemorated this event with a ceremony of their own. As a conclusion to the formal events, senior prefects planted crosses and sowed seeds in the School’s poppy garden. Dr Rainey, the Head Boy and Head Girl completed the weekend’s remembrance events by laying wreaths on behalf of the School at the cenotaph in the town’s Memorial Park on the Sunday morning.

Daniel McKee, proprietor of Brown’s, stated: “It is great to be involved in yet another wonderful school production”. Brown’s will also be taking over the catering in our 6th form servery from the new year and already provide a quality coffee hub on Friday’s for staff and pupils.

Colmar Exchange Trip Ballyclare High School hosted staff and pupils for one week from their exchange partner school, the Lycée Camille Sée in Colmar, France. The French teachers and pupils spent some time in class with their hosts and gave informative and insightful presentations on Colmar and the Alsace region. During their busy programme they visited the North Coast, Titanic Belfast, the Somme Heritage Centre, Parliament Buildings at Stormont and Belfast City Hall. They also received a very warm welcome and reception in Mossley Mill given by the Mayor of Antrim and Newtownabbey Borough Council, Councillor Paul Michael. Preparations are now under way for the return trip next year which will see the two schools celebrate the 25th anniversary of the exchange. Vive l’échange!

Dorsten Trip 18 pupils accompanied by 2 members of staff enjoyed a 4 night visit to Dorsten in October. This was our 28th annual exchange. The group was hosted by staff and pupils from our partner school, Gymnasium Petrinum. We enjoyed a group visit to the Gasometer, which is an old gasworks reinvented as a huge exhibition hall. This year’s exhibition was entitled The Mountains Call and we all were most impressed by the photography and installations. We spent a very good weekend with our hosts and then experienced a school day in Germany. Once again, even after such a short visit, firm friendships were made and we are already looking forward to welcoming our German guests here in Ballyclare in October 2019.

European Day of Languages As ever, Ballyclare High School celebrated European Day of Languages in style this year. On Tuesday 25th September, our Year 8 pupils learned how to say hello in ten different European languages and then had to hunt the words around the school – these were worn in the form of badges by numerous members of staff! Year 9 pupils took part in our Cultural Costume Day in which they dressed up as Spain, France and Germany. More winners were awarded prizes than ever before this year, with a grand total of sixteen pupils being rewarded for their fancy-dress efforts! Our overall winners were 9E, who dressed up as Germany and even managed to cover Mr Leckey in face paint! Our ever-keen Sixth Form Language Leaders spent the morning at Fairview Primary School and delivered ‘mini lessons’ in Spanish, French and German to pupils of all ages. Fairview pupils were treated to short lessons on basic vocabulary and were keen to show off their linguistic talent. A great time was had by all! All events helped create a real ‘buzz’ around school during European Day of Languages and the continued level of commitment shown by both pupils and staff alike is another example of our enthusiasm towards all things international.

Poetry Aloud This has been a most successful year for our Poetry Aloud participants. The competition attracts 1700 competitors annually from all over Ireland, with the team performing at the highest level in the Linen Hall Library in Belfast. We won the Junior and Intermediate sections and qualified for the semi-finals at the National Library of Ireland in Dublin. Both of our semi-finalists, Leah McDonald (Intermediate) and Jonathan Marshall (Junior), got through to the finals on the 7th December. Jonathan, age 11, is one of the youngest competitors currently as the junior category incorporates 11-14 year olds. At the final, again in the National Library, Dublin, Jonathan and Leah both had outstanding performances reaching the final 9 in their sections. This is a remarkable achievement with only 4 representatives from Northern Ireland winning through to the final combined.

Careers Careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) has been progressing in school as usual this term. Years 9, 10 and 12 have had careers classes during Learning for Life and Work on Tuesday mornings and the latter two year groups will continue this until GCSE and A level subject choices are made in early March. The focus of Year 14 careers classes has been the UCAS application process, interview skills, alternative post-18 routes to A level, student finance and the school-university transition. The school’s two careers advisers from the Department for the Economy’s Careers Service have provided careers guidance interviews for all Year 12 pupils. Year 12 pupils have also had four career area talks from a selection of twelve delivered by professionals and employers on two Tuesday mornings in October and November. Those Year 14 pupils who have university interviews had a mock interview evening on 8th November and the careers department is indebted to those parents who gave of their time and expertise to prepare pupils for these important interviews. We are delighted that four Year 14 pupils were invited to Oxford and Cambridge Universities for interview in December.

Ballyclare Community Careers Convention This year’s Careers Convention will take place in Ballyclare Secondary School on 23rd January 6-9pm. The event, now in its 6th year, attracts universities from all over the UK, along with businesses, colleges and other organisations from our province. It is the main opportunity for parents and pupils in Years 10-14 to meet with all these organisations to find out about the many exciting and varied post-16 and post-18 options available for all our young people. Over 50 information stands and 30 talks are scheduled for this year, so don’t miss out! This event has a fantastic reputation in the area as is reflected in the number of organisations wishing to attend and give their valuable advice to you.

Cardiac Risk in the Young Awareness Week took place from 19th-23rd November 2018. Each year we host a screening process with the support of a bereaved family, Mr and Mrs Gault, the parents of Jamie Gault, who died tragically of this condition. If you look down the lists of 2018/19 clinics advertised there are currently NO clinics being held in Northern Ireland. 1. At least 12 young (aged 35 and under) people die suddenly from a previously undiagnosed heart condition. 2. In the vast majority of cases, the first sign of a problem will be the last sign, and unfortunately results in death. 3. The only way to detect a potentially fatal cardiac abnormality is through proactive cardiac screening by specially trained cardiologists. 4. CRY firmly believes that every young person should have the option to be screened and currently offers a national screening service where anyone aged 14-35 can access free cardiac tests. 5. There also appears to be a significant misunderstanding of the possible causes of sudden cardiac death with a staggering 40% of people (rising to 52% among 1825 year olds) incorrectly believing that an unhealthy lifestyle could be a major cause of these tragedies.

Sixth Form Formal On the 11th of October 2018, the Clandeboye Lodge Hotel was transformed into the Oscar Academy Awards, and everyone rose to the occasion. Nearly the whole year group attended and also many teachers. It was just lovely for staff and pupils to have the opportunity to interact in an environment other than school and everyone looked fabulous. There was a great atmosphere from the beginning, with a slideshow of pictures from everyone in our year and a photo booth providing plenty of entertainment. Once our stomachs were full, after a delicious three course meal, an awards ceremony began, courtesy of Matthew Taylor and Josh Cowan. Some might say they occasionally wandered within more than touching distance of ‘the line’, but it was nothing short of brilliant. Most of us had sore tummy muscles from laughing so much. Once we were recovered, it was time for a boogie! With plenty of ABBA, YMCA, and the ChaCha slide, it was impossible not to join in on the fun. We danced, jived and had the time of our lives, all together. The Clandeboye DJ assured us he had never seen so many pupils up on the dance floor and by the end, we even had Doctor Rainey Rockin’ the Boat! The Upper Sixth Formal has always been a very prestigious event in school and it was an absolute privilege to be a part of it this year. After all the anticipation, it definitely didn’t disappoint and I know we all take away great lifelong memories of the night. Saffy Cockcroft (Deputy Head Girl)

Bar Mock Trial Bar Mock is a highlight of the annual public speaking calendar and involves a team of 16 senior pupils replicating the conditions of a real trial. On the day of the competition senior members of the judicial system preside over the cases; the team are pitted against other top Ulster schools and the calibre is increasingly impressive every year. This is our sixth year in the competition which offers pupils an opportunity to sample the types of careers associated with the legal profession. Our Bar Mock Trial team competed in the regional heat on Saturday 24th November, narrowly missing a finalist’s position. The team were mentored once again by Mrs Lee Brown, barrister, parent and past pupil of the school. Despite a hectic professional schedule, Mrs Brown met with the team before and after school on multiple occasions. She spent the entire Saturday of the competition with us in the Royal Courts of Justice, Belfast. Our sincere thanks go to her.

A2 Moving Image Arts Success

We are pleased to announce that three of our A2 Moving Image Arts pupils secured the top three places in CCEA A Level examinations in Northern Ireland. This year has been a very successful year for Moving Image Art, as three of our young filmmakers were also shortlisted finalists in the Cinemagic Short Filmmakers Competition 1824 category. This is a UK national competition that includes work from university graduates. It was a very prestigious honour for Erin Spence, Rachel Purdue and Ethan Jackson to have their films shown at the Queens’s Film Theatre in Belfast on 28th October.

Senior Hockey Tour to Amsterdam The senior hockey squad, in preparation for the Schools’ Cup and McDowell Cup, spent 4 days in Holland. We were based at Amsterdam Hockey Club for training and matches and played two of their sides, winning both of these matches, 7-1 and 4-1. Training was skills based and fun, we even ended up on a hockey video with Amsterdam’s top players who were demonstrating all their skills. The tour ended as always with a little shopping and watching a top Dutch women’s match and comparing their play to ours. Throughout the tour we competed in teams over various activities and at the airport, before we got on our flight, the tour champions were crowned. This was a great trip with some fantastic memories made and new friendships across the year groups were created.

Year 8 Hockey

Year 8 hockey has proven as always to be a very popular activity, with 54 girls taking part each Friday and Saturday. Over our 4 fixtures so far there have been 18 wins, 2 draws with 1 loss. We are just starting to see some great team work and performances; last week when we competed in a tournament at Methody and one of our teams reached the final beating Grosvenor, Wallace and Banbridge only to lose 1-0 to Armagh Royal.

Year 8 Hockey Trip Our annual Year 8 Hockey trip to the Belfast Giants Ice Hockey took place at the end of November. We were all dressed in Santa hats and started Christmas way too early for some people. The girls ate too much, shouted too much but were fantastically well behaved and the trip was enjoyed by all.
