CHAPTER PROJECT PROFILE GARY A. RANSDELL HALL

Western Kentucky University’s First LEED Building A Growing University Strikes Gold PROJECT BACKGROUND

This new facility was designed for the College of Education and Behavioral Sciences and replaced an existing outdated building that no longer met the needs of these programs. Located on Western Kentucky University’s main campus in Bowling Green, Kentucky, the building was designed to be a signature facility for the campus.

A TOOL FOR LEARNING

In addition to a clear, efficient internal layout, this new building is a tool for learning, and incorporates the latest classroom technology and an abundance of natural light throughout. Classrooms, conference areas, an auditorium, a media resource center, psychology research laboratories, faculty offices and clinic spaces were all designed to support varied teaching and learning styles and to support the exploration and development of varied teaching pedagogies.

“WKU is and will continue to be focused on being good stewards of our natural resources and a role model for sustainability.” Gary A. Ransdell, WKU President

In addition, outdoor social and learning spaces were fully integrated into the design of the building. Featuring a classical architecture aesthetic, this facility celebrates Western Kentucky University’s rich history as an institution of higher learning while creating new, state-of-theart spaces dedicated to teaching and the educational process.
