3 MIKE SPALL WELCOME
Welcome If truth be told, my first association with golf was in the mid 1950’s when a friend told me I could earn as much as five shillings (that’s 25p for our younger readers) for one round of caddying, the same as I was earning for a whole week’s paper round! So the following week I went along to the West Essex Golf Club and got a job caddying for a member in a Thornton Cup match. That member turned out to be the very well-known Dingy Bell, and I soon became his regular caddy. I had a very enjoyable time as the regular caddy of one of the best young golfers in the club, and together we travelled all over the south of England to major clubs and tournaments. I was so inspired by these early impressions that, after spending 40 years in the property business, I sold my firm and retired early to devote more of my time to the county and the sport that I love. During my 22 years on the Essex Golf Union, I have seen the county go from strength to strength. We have more promising new talent than ever before. And in 2009 of course, came our first ever English County Championship win. We truly do have much to be proud of. It is therefore my sincere pleasure to introduce you, dear reader, to the official Essex Golf Union magazine, which we hope will enable us to inspire and inform you, and whip up some Essex spirit. Within this magazine we will regularly provide top interviews and probing features on the great and good of Essex golfing past and present. We will encourage local golfers and golf enthusiasts of all ages and abilities by providing information on scholarships and coaching programmes. This, dear readers, is not my magazine, it is our magazine. You may write or email your thoughts, ideas or suggestions for articles, ensuring this is truly a community magazine. The world has changed a lot since the days that I earned five shillings for a day of caddying. The union aims to move with the times whilst retaining our respect for the game and sense of tradition. The reason we have created this digital magazine, is to get all the information about our favourite game in our favourite county straight to you as efficiently as possible. We hope you are proud of what we are aiming to achieve and showcase, and we urge you to spread the word! Tweet about us, post us on Facebook, or simply tell your friends when you next see them for an ale. Go forth proudly, and together, with the right amount of enthusiasm, we can make Essex the greatest golfing county in the land. Mike Spall President Essex Golf Union

8 IN THE CLUBHOUSE CHELMSFORD GOLF CLUB
Chelmsford Golf Club Marcus Bain takes a look at what Chelmsford Golf Club has to offer Chelmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest traditional, private members’ clubs in the county having celebrated our club centenary in 1993. From modest beginnings, this gem of a parkland course is now recognised as one of the best in the County of Essex and is a ‘must’ for the discerning golfer. We offer a warm welcome to visitors, Golf Societies and Corporate Days.
We at The Essex Golf Union caught up with Hannah Brown, Front of House Manager, at Chelmsford Golf Club, one of Essex’s most welcoming golf clubs, to find out about the running of the club house, and talk about the inner workings of the local golf industry and what goes on behind the scenes.
Ô First, how long have you been in club management and how long have you been at your current club? I am fairly new here at Chelmsford Golf Club, I have only been here for a year now, however I have been working in golf club management for just over 5 years all in all.
Ô What responsibilities do you have in your role for the club? I am in charge of the day-to-day running of the clubhouse, liaising with members, organising catering and arranging society days and social events for the club. At the moment I am focusing on promoting the social events and encouraging new custom for the club.
Ô What would you say is the best and most satisfying part of your job? When the club is buzzing with activity and our diary is full with events and functions for members and visitors. I also really thrive off providing customer satisfaction and running successful themed nights. We have just

“Chelmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest traditional, private members’ clubs in the county having celebrated our club centenary in 1993. We are a parkland course which is considered a “must” for the discerning golfer.” April of this year, where we offer full membership for one year for only £75 per month. After the year, you will have the option of joining or leaving the club.
Ô Does your club host weddings and other events? If so, do many people choose to have their wedding at your club and what sets you apart in hosting a standard wedding reception? If not, do you plan to introduce this service in the future or do you plan to focus more on other types of events? We do not host weddings. However we do host large corporate days and charity events where we offer competitive packages.
Ô What is your club’s most popular event (regular or annual) with the members/regulars? Once a year we host a Summer Ball. This is a very successful event where we have around 200 people for a large sit down meal with themed entertainment. However this year Chelmsford Golf Club is also lucky enough to be hosting the Essex PGA Open Championships in May.
Ô We all know a lot of business is conducted on the golf course. In what ways do you cater especially for corporate or business clients and what additional facilities are available for conferences and business meetings? We often host large corporate and charity days, where we offer a selection of delegate packages at very competitive prices. Twice a month we hold the 4N breakfast club. done a very successful “Burns Night” in January which was the highlight of the month!
Ô What is the most challenging aspect of your position? I would say the most challenging aspect of my job position is working hard to keep up the high level of service that we pride ourselves on here at Chelmsford.
Ô For those who have never visited your region, can you tell us a little about golf in your area? We are in an area of Essex where we are surrounded by lots of good golf courses, of which Chelmsford is one of the best. Chelmsford Golf Club is one of the oldest traditional, private members’ clubs in the county having celebrated our club centenary in 1993. We are a parkland course which is considered a “must” for the discerning golfer.
Ô Keeping a golf club busy around the year is a big challenge for any club, can you tell us about some of the key initiatives you are currently working at Chelmsford Golf Club? We are currently working hard to promote our social calendar, which is full of themed evenings and social events for all ages at the club. We have recently introduced a trial membership scheme which is due to start in
Ô After a long game of golf, I’m sure many find themselves rather peckish. What does your club offer in the way of sustenance, do you use any home grown produce? And what is the most common drink for a player after a game? We serve food from 9am till 4pm every weekday and 8am till 5pm at weekends, offering a wide-ranging menu. Our home-made cakes are always popular, as is our Sunday carvery which we host every weekend. We have a fully-stocked bar, always including a guest bitter, and serve a range of great coffees and speciality teas.
Ô I am a firm believer that if you want to know what is the best thing on the menu at any food serving establishment, the wisest thing to do is ask a member of staff who chooses (or is forced) to eat there! What is your favourite meal/snack at the club? I would have to say that I really enjoy our Sunday carvery!
Ô Keeping on the food theme, what catering facilities do you have or use to cater for your members and visiting groups/special events? Our full catering facilities are available to members and their guests. We provide special a la carte menus especially designed for each individual event.

range of different games and activities, fireworks night which is always very popular and at Christmas we hold a children’s Christmas party where the children will be entertained for the afternoon as well as having the chance to meet Father Christmas and receive a gift. Our golf pro’s, actively encourage youngsters to get into the game of golf with weekend and holiday coaching.
Ô Golf is a competitive game, which as we all know can lead to quite a bit of frustration at times. After a tough round, what other welcome distractions are there in the clubhouse for members and guests…pool, darts, board games etc. (Or does the bar satisfy most?)? We have a strong bridge club here at Chelmsford which proves very popular, along with a cards evening on a Thursday night.
Ô And finally, how would you best sum up the atmosphere that exists within the clubhouse? What would you hope someone who has never visited you club might take away with them after their first visit? Ô Is there a hotel aspect to your club? If not, what venues do you recommend in the local area? We do not have accommodation on-site, but there are a number of excellent bed & breakfasts and hotels in the Chelmsford area.
Ô Golf clubs tend to evoke a family atmosphere; do you have special facilities for children and young people? And are there any offers available to families for membership? We encourage families to come up for family lunches on Sunday. We also run special children’s events throughout the year, in the summer we tend to have a “family fun day” where children (and adults) can enjoy a
We are a friendly club, and do our best to make everyone feel welcome. This is supported by our strong reputation for both our spectacular golf course and for our great customer service.

14 WHAT’S IN THE BAG BRETT TAYLOR
What’s in the bag? Brett Taylor, Crondon Park Brett Taylor is a PGA Teaching Professional based at Crondon Park Golf Academy, providing golf lessons for all aspiring golfers. “As a player I have played at all levels, from representing Essex and England as an Amateur, all the way up to competing in several European Tour Events, including the Open Championship. Along the way I have worked with many of the world’s top coaches, gaining invaluable knowledge in teaching golf”.
Why I use... Driver - Wilson D100 Superlight Driver This year sees me take a new approach to the clubs I use. This D100 Driver is a lot lighter than my previous driver, making it feel a lot easier to use. It’s a great looking club and very forgiving. I am using a 9 degree head with an Oban Kiyoshi Shaft 04 65 gram (stiff flex), previously I have used a much stiffer shaft flex. I have generally always been pretty straight from the tee, but never the longest. The lighter club and much softer shaft has allowed me to increase my club speed with the same effort, I am looking forward to taking it to the course in 2013.
15 BRETT TAYLOR WHAT’S IN THE BAG
Fairway - Wilson D100 3 Wood The fairway is much the same set up, 15 degrees in loft with the same shaft - Oban Kiyoshi, the only difference is a slightly heavier shaft, 75 grams. It is common to have the fairway slightly heavier when setting a driver and fairway, and has helped keep the spin off the ball allowing a long penetrating flight. I was so impressed with these clubs when I first tried them that I instantly changed. It’s a great looking club.
Hybrid / Rescue - Wilson D100 Hybrid I use a 19 degree Hybrid which effectively is my 2/3 iron as my longest iron in the bag is a 4. Again using an Oban Kiyosi, but 100 grammes this time. It is heavier than I would have thought but it matches up to my irons really well. It has a smaller head but is very forgiving, and allows me to control the ball to my desired trajectory (sometimes!). This could be the most versatile club in the bag as it is great from the rough and can be also be used around the green. It is my most used club (excluding the putter).
Irons - Wilson D100 This is a huge change for me, as the clubs are a lot bigger and more offset than I have used before. But once I used these there was no going back. The most forgiving and longest iron I have used, but yet the flight allows the ball to land softly. I am yet to decide whether it’s the lighter shaft (85 gram uniflex) or the big cavity back, but they certainly work for me. I am excited to be playing them and feel my mid to long irons are going to be a huge improvement. I use 4 iron through to gap wedge in the D 100’s and have also been trying the V2 forged wedge, but I think I will stick with the D100’s as I just seem to gain more control over my ball flight.
16 WHAT’S IN THE BAG BRETT TAYLOR
Wedges - Cleveland CG 16 My wedges are very important to my game and I have always liked a lot of bounce on the sole, giving me plenty of versatility. I use 54 and 60 degree which I feel gives me a complete yardage range from 100 yards and in. This is the most important range in any players’ game and is essential to any golfing enthusiast. I have always liked more bounce as I feel that when chipping it gives me more room for error with the strike of my chip shots. It allows the club to slide through and under the ball as opposed to digging. Each player is different and it is a matter of finding your preference.
Putter – Taylor made Spider centre shaft I use a 34 inch face balanced putter which I feel really confident with. The weighting of this putter is great and really suits my stroke. I used a belly putter for a while but changing to this putter last year was an easy change. In the past I have chopped and changed the putters I use but this has been in the bag for a while now and I am hoping for it to stay in there for a while.
Shoe - Footjoy Sport. A great all round shoe. I just enjoy the comfort and lightweight feel to this shoe. I can put them on straight out of the box and don’t have any problems.
Ball - Titleist Pro V 1 X
Glove - Titleist Players glove Size Medium – Cadet
I am not sure that this firmer compression ball is the most suited of the Titleists, but I prefer the firmer feel and the ball performs great. I have used the Titleist for a long time now and don’t see me changing.
A very soft, leather glove. The cadet fitting suits me best as the finger size is just a little shorter.

How to assess your season and build an effective improvement plan STEVEN PALMER’S HISTORY Steven Palmer was 8 years old when he first started playing golf, introduced to the sport by his father at a local pitch and putt course. He began coaching from the age of 17 and at 20 he was coaching at the UK Golf Academy at Epping Golf Range. In 2006 he made the move to West Essex Golf Club and found a great mentor in Robert Joyce who has coached some of the best players in Europe like Bernhard Langer, Mark Davis, and Simon Khan. Steven has recently formed the Palmer Williams Golf Academy at Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club just outside Marbella, Spain with fellow PGA professional Daniel Williams. Steven is currently a coach to some of the top county amateurs and professionals and is a specialist for golfers with injuries and disabilities. His coaching philosophy is to help all his students improve technically, mentally and physically, ensuring that his students improve at a maximised rate. We are proud to have Steven sharing his instruction with usa nd hope you find this session as engaging as we do.
Unless you have a lot of warm clothing, a lot of orange golf balls and are slightly nuts, you’re probably not playing a lot of golf right now! At this time of year, even when the snow melts, it doesn’t leave behind the most golf-inspiring conditions, so why not use some of this time to prepare for when the weather and the courses improve? In this edition I’m going to talk about how to build an effective plan to produce your best golf for the season ahead.
Ô Why make a plan? I could answer this question in many ways, providing many credible answers, but ultimately they all come down to this: A good plan always includes a desirable result. It is the desirable result that drives us to do anything in life. This is where the focus and motivation come from that gets you through a difficult swing improvement, tough workout or even the DIY at home that you’ve been meaning to finish. During short tasks, the end result is always in sight, making it easier to stay focused and motivated until you get the job done. However, during longer tasks, such as significantly improving your golf game, the end result is often much further away, and it is the job of your plan to keep you motivated and focused throughout. If you’re not focused or motivated, you’re far more likely to quit, or at best, take much longer than necessary to achieve your goals. “Try to get better every day” is a great motto to live by, but it isn’t enough.
23 STEVEN PALMER GOLF TUTORIALS Ô The two key questions To begin your plan, you need to answer these two key questions: 1. How was last season? 2. What do I want from this season? The answers to these questions are your starting point and your desirable end result. How you most effectively fill in the middle depends on the clarity and specificity of these answers. The best advice I can give at this point is to only assess what was/is under your control. For example, think more along the lines of “I didn’t strike my irons as well as I wanted last season” and “I want to hit my driver 30 yards further next season” than “Mike Smith hammered me in the matchplay last season” and “I want to win the Piddlesbury Open this year”. What I mean is, don’t assess or aspire to achieve things that other people/things can influence. An Olympic sprinter will always aim to achieve a certain time rather than a specific placement in a race. Also, make sure you acknowledge what you did well last season. It’s as important to recognise and maintain your good behavioural habits as it is to change the ones that are causing you problems.
Ô Get specific As I mentioned earlier, the quality and effectiveness of your plan depends on the clarity and specificity of your answers to the two key questions above. When analysing last season, delve into your positive and negative points as deeply as possible. If your initial thought is just “I played terribly last year”, try to get to the bottom of why. Ask yourself “What was it that was causing me to shoot bad scores?” If it was your driving, ask yourself “What exactly was wrong?” Did you repeatedly slice it, hook it, top it? You will need the help of a good PGA coach to really get to the root of your problems, but the more factual information you have, the easier they will find it to help you.
Ô Work backwards from perfect This is where the self-motivation begins. When answering the second key question, think about what your perfect scenario would be as you stand on the first tee for your first big competition of the season. For this exercise, it’s important to stay very specific and think about what you’d love to have by this time. Maybe you want supreme confidence in your driver. It might be something more “outside the box” like being free of that niggling back injury you’ve had for the past 18 months which finally allows you to swing faster and smoother. If you want to really get into detail, you could even include having that important document at work finished so that it’s no longer playing on your mind during your free time that you spend on the course. Below are some great answers I’ve heard to the second key question during my time as a coach. Use these for inspiration and to get thinking on the right lines: “I want to have stopped hitting hooks off the tee” “I want to be comfortable with my upcoming swing improvements” “I want to be fit and strong enough to swing the club how I want and for my body to withstand multiple tournaments and long practice sessions without aches, pains or injuries” “I want to have secured the funding for my upcoming season on tour so that I’m not worrying about money during the season” “I want to have a good work/life balance so that I have more time to play golf” “I want to address the problems in my relationship at home so that they don’t consume my thoughts and exhaust me” “I want to have a six-pack!” You think having a six-pack isn’t important for golf? Maybe not directly, but for this player it served as motivation to get them in the gym, eat correctly and make them feel more confident walking from the car, to the practice ground and onto the first tee. Three great reasons to include it in their improvement plan! By now, you should have a vision of your perfect future self and situation. This is your desirable result. Now, if you’re not a full-time professional golfer (or aspiring to be one) it’s very likely that you won’t have time to achieve everything in your perfect scenario. This is where you start to work backwards from perfect. Prioritise the most important elements and discard those that are not so important until you have a desirable result that you can realistically reach within your desired timeframe.

Groove a slight in-toout swing path, still consistently knocking the tee out of the ground with every tee shot.
More consistent with the driver, high draw ball flight, never top it.
Spend at least 2 hours per week working on distance control.
Achieve 90% success rate in my distance control exercise from 30 feet.
Averaging 1 or less 3-putts per round.
Pass cardio, strength and flexibility tests outlined in my workout plan.
Be able to adhere to my actual working hours 90% of the time.
Fitter, stronger, full of energy.
Working regular hours, great work/life balance, have time to practice at least twice a week.
Ô Be flexible As we all know, sometimes things don’t go completely to plan. Occasionally you might miss a practice session or two through work commitments, getting ill etc. and sometimes you might progress quicker than expected. For example, you may find a swing improvement easier than you first thought. Whether your progress is slower or quicker than you anticipated, always adjust your plan to give yourself the best chance of achieving your desired result.
25 STEVEN PALMER GOLF TUTORIALS
Ô A powerful addition Even though you’ve been diligent enough to create a great plan, it’s important that you are always conscious of what you’re doing and why. A powerful addition to your plan is a summary of your current goals drawn up in nice big bold letters, placed somewhere where you’ll see them every day. My favourite places are inside your wardrobe door and next to your main mirror. This helps you stay focused on what’s important to achieve your desirable end result when your life throws you distractions, serving as a constant reminder to do what it takes to achieve what you want.
SHORT-TERM GOALS - To be completed by week 8
• Groove a slight in-to-out swing path, still consistently knocking the tee out of the grounf with every tee shot. • Achieve 90% success rate in my distance control exercise from 30 feet. • Be able to adhere to my actual working hours 90% of the time.
Whether you’re a weekend golfer looking to get a little more enjoyment from the game or a full-time touring professional, this exercise is one of the most valuable things you can do. If you can build a great plan that keeps you focused and motivated you will have more chance of seeing it through, and if you do, you will have your best season yet. Now go plan a great golfing season!

32 CHI POWER GOLF JAYNE STOREY
Stillness is the Master of Motion Think Sports Media are proud to present a unique series of articles by Jayne Storey, Founder / Director of chi-power GOLF chi-power GOLF brings you advanced performance techniques which are tried, tested and proven to help you play golf ‘in the zone’ and experience greater consistency, enjoyment and the happiness of a well-struck golf shot time after time. Jayne Storey is a long-term member of the Tai Chi Union for Great Britain, professional development facilitator for the Professional Golfers’ Association, and feature writer for Golf International. She provides a distinctive coaching service to golfers, athletes from other sports, business-executives, performing artists and other high-achievers to whom it is necessary to perform well in pressure situations. She has been practicing and professionally coaching the Eastern arts for the past 25 years.
I recently spoke to a golf professional who’d been suffering from acute overanalysis of his putting technique, made all the more unbearable when one day he looked up to see a young girl of about 12 years, putting effortlessly and sinking the ball into the cup every time. Upon asking her what she was thinking about…the girl replied, getting the ball into the hole! Golf instruction places so much emphasis on technique and ‘getting it right’ that most people lose confidence in their innate ability and never get to fully own their swing. I’d like to suggest a possible anecdote by recalling a similar situation that occurred in the world of kung-fu, in 1940’s Beijing. Wang Xiang Zhai, founder of a revolutionary style called Great Achievement Boxing felt that most kung fu practitioners were putting the cart before the horse, in that they were obsessed with patterns of movement and spent very little time developing basic awareness skills. He therefore did away with the traditional repetitions of movement patterns (kata’s) and took a journey into the heart of stillness.
33 JAYNE STOREY CHI POWER GOLF “In silence there must be movement, and in motion, there must be silence. A small movement is better than a big, no movement is better than a small; silence is all the movement’s mother. In movement you should be like a dragon or tiger. In non-movement you should be like a Buddha”. Wang Xiang Zhai, Founder – Great Achievement Boxing The standing meditation practices he developed (and which form a cornerstone of chi-power GOLF techniques) train mental and physical awareness, allowing the mind to experience peacefulness and the body to rediscover its innate ability for natural movement. Training in this way is a great compliment to swing coaching and will help you master the all-important fundamentals of a good address posture – i.e. balance, relaxation and rooting. As you know from your own swing, any conscious movement is preceded by intention and the greatest shots you’ve ever hit come when intention and action are one and the same – i.e. your body does what your mind intends it to do! Moreover, the greatest shots always follow the most careful set-up, when you take your time or when you seem to go more slowly than usual (a key signal you’re in ‘the zone’). Conversely when you rush your preparation, your swing suffers…this can be seen most notably in the height of competition and affects the world-class elite as much as the weekend warrior. Next time you play, pay attention to that moment of stillness before the shot, making sure to feel rooted and relaxed over the ball before you even think about taking the club away. This standing meditation posture works 100% of the time to help develop better balance, deeper breathing and the ability to swing freely from a solid platform. Stand quietly like this for 5 minutes before your next round and you’ll be amazed at how much further you can hit the ball.
What to expect As an awareness exercise standing meditation is first and foremost a method of preparing the body’s three springs – legs, torso and arms – for unified action directed by the mind. In other words, as you stand still you will gain greater freedom of movement, as the upper body becomes more relaxed, supported and under the influence/direction of the legs and feet. Persistent training will yield greater stability in your shot-making as you’ll start to really appreciate why the great Jack Nicklaus took his time at address. The Golden Bear claimed that his shot- preparation was the key to his superiority over other players and felt that his attention to detail in this area was a key differentiation point that few of his contemporaries paid adequate attention to.
Universal Post • Stand with your feet shoulder-width wide
He therefore built a basis so strong in theory and practice that it would not and could not be shaken under any circumstances.
• Imagine your head is suspended from above • Empty your chest
Some call this mental toughness – others recognise it as sheer mastery.
• Soften your knees and allow your weight to sink into your foot-prints • Neutralize your pelvis, by gently allowing your tailbone to unfurl • Raise your hands to shoulder height, as if you are holding a large balloon • Keep your shoulders relaxed and elbows pointing downwards • Gaze gently into the distance • Focus on your breathing

Essex Golf Introducing the
Crondon Park Golf Club one of our Six Centres
Funded by Sport England, The Partnership’s objective is to introduce the game of golf to beginners and encourage people to play golf more often. The Partnership works very closely with The Golf Foundation and Activeessex to assist in the delivery of strong county-wide support to clubs, golfers, schools and individuals looking to take up the game.
It has never been easier to get started... Our major new initiative for 2012 is the introduction of ‘official’ Get into Golf Centres. We currently have 8 centres although we have plans to expand. If you’re aged 16 or over and want to learn how to play golf or you want to brush down your clubs and start again. Now is your chance, all beginner adults are welcome. We are setting up a number of “official” Get into Golf Centres around the county. Throughout this year, each centre will be running 4 x 1 hour weekly group coaching sessions covering the basics of the game. You will be able choose between a mid-week or weekend session...and there’ll be plenty of space for everyone as there are two new groups every month to join. The Centres all have excellent beginner facilities including a driving range which is open for public/general use. • All equipment will be provided, just wear something comfortable. • Quality PGA Professional Tuition • Maximum Group size 8-10 • For just £12 for the 4 week course, how could you not give it a go. • New courses every month during 2012.

40 COUNTY NEWS ESSEX COACHING 2013
Essex Coaching 2013Upminster Golf ExExtra Winter Months Coaching
Readers will probably be aware that each year, 8 Under-16 boys are selected from our Eastern Region to receive extra coaching throughout the winter months. The region contains Bedfordshire, Norfolk, Suffolk and Essex, so it is no mean feat to be promoted to this, one of ten regions throughout the Country. This year 5 of the boys are from Essex. Louis Lazarus, Sam O’Brien and Conner Morris are Under-16 and Jack Dyer and Dylan Mahmut are Under-15. These lads will receive between 15 and 20 full day lessons from Chris Jenkins – the Regional Coach for the area.
(names of these boys are published on the Essex County website).
The experiences these lads will receive will be considerable and has given your Essex Player Development Committee reason to ponder. Therefore in 2013 there will be some considerable changes to the way we select and coach our Essex boys.
The biggest change will be at Under-12 where the County is establishing 3 centres across the County with experienced coaches who can demonstrate success in developing this age group, who will be directed to discover and develop potential talent. At this age, the coaching will be with a light touch, but will also include participation in an Under-12 Essex Tour for the boys playing in at least 4 venues in Essex under-competition conditions.
To fill the experience gap between County and Regional Coaching , 12 boys have been selected from all sections of our programme to receive Essex Winter Elite Coaching. Obviously the boys named above will not have the time to participate in this, so the boys who are considered at this stage to have the best chance of being selected for the Region in the future, or who are candidates thought to represent your County in future years, were selected by the County Coaches to take part. From January to April the boys will receive 5 full days’ sessions under the watchful eye of David March. When spring eventually returns the number of boys experiencing County Coaching in age groups Under-13 to Under-16 will expand from 12 boys in each year to 18. There will be an A and B squad in each year
An Essex Junior Golf Tour for all boys and girls under 14 years of age will, hopefully, provide a platform for late developers to prove their ability against the County Coaching squad players, whilst also providing valuable experience in playing golf “away from the home club”. Details of this will be published soon on the County website. This competition is sponsored by the Norman Garon Trust and there will be prizes for Handicap and Scratch successes.
The purpose of these changes is to establish a broad base of players from the very youngest age groups, and slowly permit the cream to rise to the top whilst also providing a route for late developers to join the scheme. Essex is moving with the golfing times and, following the recent successes of Bobby Keeble and Mitchell Sarling, we are confident that we are providing an improving platform for young Essex golfers to mature and develop into great players. 48 ESSEX GOLF UNION HISTORY
First We Take Romford, Then We Take The World: President Mike Spall talks us through the Proud History of The Essex Golf Union
I
t was on a blustery late February day in 1924 that amateur golfers from Woodford to Wanstead, from Ilford to Boyce Hill, mustered their forces at Romford Golf Club united in the sole aim of promoting and developing amateur golf in their county. Representatives from no less than sixteen clubs gathered here on this historic day, and, after several ales, The Essex Golf Union was born. Under the watchful eye of First President of The Union and Captain of Wanstead Golf Club, J. J. Esplen, the members set about arranging a competition. The first arranged by the Union was a 36 holes medal, which became the Essex Amateur Championship, and was open to members of all Essex Clubs with a handicap of 12 or under. In 1924 Mr.C.Law (club unknown) was the first ever Essex Amateur Champion. The Championship continued to be played over 36 holes until 1955 when it was expanded to its current format of 72 holes. Early Minutes of the Union Committee Meetings reveal that
a number of notable people including Sir Winston Churchill, T. A. Torrance (Captain Walker Cup Team), Bernard Darwin and the Lord Chief Justice were all invited to the Union’s Annual Dinners on various occasions. We can only assume Churchill himself was more interested in the ale than the golf, given he once described his experience of playing the game as “Like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture.” The Essex Golf Union has gone from strength to strength over the years, never faltering in its aim to promote, encourage and inspire Essex amateur golfers. The creation of many more competitions and trophies is testament to this- The Veterans Trophy (Est. 1927), The Boys Championship (Est. 1932), and The Youth Shield (Est. 1951) to name but a few. This patronage and local encouragement has led to notable successes with Essex at a national level. (See subsection 1. Notable Firsts)
“[Playing golf] is like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture Winston Churchill

50 ESSEX GOLF UNION HISTORY Throughout the years we have produced many outstanding players. In the 1950/60’s there was Ken Budd of West Essex and Sir Michael Bonallack of Thorpe Hall. The record of Sir Michael was quite outstanding and he was perhaps the greatest amateur of modern times winning the Essex County Championship 9 times from 1954, and a multitude of regional and national accolades culminating in his tenure as President of the English Golf Union and rightfully inducted into The World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. In recent years we have continued to help, encourage and develop many golfers that have fared well both in amateur ranks and, later, professionally. (See Subsection 2. Current Successful Players) In line with its objectives, The Essex Golf Union is proud to promote Golf at its highest level. We currently run Teams at under 14, under 16, under 18, colts (under 21), full County Team and Seniors (over 55’s.) In addition we have a wide range of coaching programmes to suit all levels, ages and abilities. We also arrange a number of County Competitions, including The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy and The Chigwel Bowl, and organise various Club Team Events. (See Subsection 3. Tournaments) With an extremely talented team and incredible amounts of dedication and hard work, golf in our county has gone from strength to strength, and in 2009 we saw the most well deserved success when we were crowned the English County Champions for the first time. Though we have a long and distinguished history, there has never been a more promising and exciting time in Essex Golf, and in conjunction with our global media partners Think Sports Media Ltd, we are putting every resource into ensuring further success in the future.
Notable county firsts 1971- For the first time since the competition was inaugurated in 1928 the Essex County Team gained first place in the S.E. Group qualifying competition for the English County Championship, defeating Surrey,
Sussex, Hampshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Middlesex, Kent and B.B. & O. in a tremendously exciting finish at Northwood G. C. on 31st July 1971. In the final Staffordshire only narrowly beat Essex.
1997 – For the second time in its history the County team gained first place in the S.E group qualifying competition for the English County Championship.
1997 – For the first time in the history of ECAGU the boys won the English Boys County Championship. The Boys Team also won the S.E. Foursomes Championship.
2009
– For the first time in our history the County Team won the English Men’s County Championship. The Team was Matt Southgate, Jack Winer, James Webber, Andy Shakespeare, Ross Dee, Ross Spurgeon and Jay Beiser. In addition Dale Whitnell played in the qualifying event but had turned professional before the final.
