Welcome If truth be told, my first association with golf was in the mid 1950’s when a friend told me I could earn as much as five shillings (that’s 25p for our younger readers) for one round of caddying, the same as I was earning for a whole week’s paper round! So the following week I went along to the West Essex Golf Club and got a job caddying for a member in a Thornton Cup match. That member turned out to be the very well-known Dingy Bell, and I soon became his regular caddy. I had a very enjoyable time as the regular caddy of one of the best young golfers in the club, and together we travelled all over the south of England to major clubs and tournaments. I was so inspired by these early impression that, after spending 40 years in the property business, I sold my firm and retired early to devote more of my time to the county and the sport that I love. During my 22 years on the Essex Golf Union, I have seen the county go from strength to strength. We have more promising new talent than ever before. And in 2009 of course, came our first ever English County Championship win. We truly do have much to be proud of. It is therefore my sincere pleasure to introduce you, dear reader, to the official Essex Golf Union magazine, which we hope will enable us to inspire and inform you, and whip up some Essex spirit. Within this magazine we will regularly provide top interviews and probing features on the great and good of Essex golfing past and present. We will encourage local golfers and golf enthusiasts of all ages and abilities by providing information on scholarships and coaching programmes. This, dear readers, is not my magazine, it is our magazine. You may write or email your thoughts, ideas or suggestions for articles, ensuring this is truly a community magazine. The world has changed a lot since the days that I earned five shillings for a day of caddying. The union aims to move with the times whilst retaining our respect for the game and sense of tradition. The reason we have created this digital magazine, is to get all the information about our favourite game in our favourite county straight to you as efficiently as possible. We hope you are proud of what we are aiming to achieve and showcase, and we urge you to spread the word! First We Take Romford, Then We Take The World: President Mike Spall talks us through the Proud History of The Essex Golf Union

I

t was on a blustery late February day in 1924 that amateur golfers from Woodford to Wanstead, from Ilford to Boyce Hill, mustered their forces at Romford Golf Club united in the sole aim of promoting and developing amateur golf in their county. Representatives from no less than sixteen clubs gathered here on this historic day, and, after several ales, The Essex Golf Union was born. Under the watchful eye of First President of The Union and Captain of Wanstead Golf Club, J. J. Esplen, the members set about arranging a competition. The first arranged by the Union was a 36 holes medal, which became the Essex Amateur Championship, and was open to members of all Essex Clubs with a handicap of 12 or under. In 1924 Mr.C.Law (club unknown) was the first ever Essex Amateur Champion. The Championship continued to be played over 36 holes until 1955 when it was expanded to its current format of 72 holes. Early Minutes of the Union Committee Meetings reveal that

a number of notable people including Sir Winston Churchill, T. A. Torrance (Captain Walker Cup Team), Bernard Darwin and the Lord Chief Justice were all invited to the Union’s Annual Dinners on various occasions. We can only assume Churchill himself was more interested in the ale than the golf, given he once described his experience of playing the game as “Like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture.” The Essex Golf Union has gone from strength to strength over the years, never faltering in its aim to promote, encourage and inspire Essex amateur golfers. The creation of many more competitions and trophies is testament to this- The Veterans Trophy (Est. 1927), The Boys Championship (Est. 1932), and The Youth Shield (Est. 1951) to name but a few. This patronage and local encouragement has led to notable successes with Essex at a national level. (See subsection 1. Notable Firsts)

10 ESSEX GOLF UNION history Throughout the years we have produced many outstanding players. In the 1950/60’s there was Ken Budd of West Essex and Sir Michael Bonallack of Thorpe Hall. The record of Sir Michael was quite outstanding and he was perhaps the greatest amateur of modern times winning the Essex County Championship 9 times from 1954, and a multitude of regional and national accolades culminating in his tenure as President of the English Golf Union and rightfully inducted into The World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. In recent years we have continued to help, encourage and develop many golfers that have fared well both in amateur ranks and, later, professionally. (See Subsection 2. Current Successful Players) In line with its objectives, The Essex Golf Union is proud to promote Golf at its highest level. We currently run Teams at under 14, under 16, under 18, colts (under 21), full County Team and Seniors (over 55’s.) In addition we have a wide range of coaching programmes to suit all levels, ages and abilities. We also arrange a number of County Competitions, including The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy and The Chigwel Bowl, and organise various Club Team Events. (See Subsection 3. Tournaments) With an extremely talented team and incredible amounts of dedication and hard work, golf in our county has gone from strength to strength, and in 2009 we saw the most well deserved success when we were crowned the English County Champions for the first time. Though we have a long and distinguished history, there has never been a more promising and exciting time in Essex Golf, and in conjunction with our global media partners Think Sports Media Ltd, we are putting every resource into ensuring further success in the future.

Sussex, Hampshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Middlesex, Kent and B.B. & O. in a tremendously exciting finish at Northwood G. C. on 31st July 1971. In the final Staffordshire only narrowly beat Essex.

1997 – For the second time in its history the County team gained first place in the S.E group qualifying competition for the English County Championship.

1997 – For the first time in the history of ECAGU the boys won the English Boys County Championship. The Boys Team also won the S.E. Foursomes Championship.

2009

– For the first time in our history the County Team won the English Men’s County Championship. The Team was Matt Southgate, Jack Winer, James Webber, Andy Shakespeare, Ross Dee, Ross Spurgeon and Jay Beiser. In addition Dale Whitnell played in the qualifying event but had turned professional before the final.

Current success Notable examples are the Walker Cup Players Richard McEvoy, Oliver Fisher and Dale Whitnell. We currently have Simon Khan, Lloyd Kennedy, Richard McEvoy, Matt Southgate , Oliver Fisher and Robbie Coles on the European Tour, Dale Whitnell and Dan Brooks on the Challenge Tour and many promising players who are progressing through the lower ranked professional tours. In addition we have Geoff King of West Essex who won the English Seniors Championship and who represents England Internationally, Jack Heasman who has represented England at Junior level and Jack Hiluta who has also represented England.

Tournaments County Tournaments – The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy, The Chigwell Bowl, The Romford Trophy, and The Upminster Bowl. Club Team events – The Thorton Cup, an interclub knockout played off scratch. There is also the Leslie Wood Trophy an interclub knockout for players with handicaps of 7.5 or over, The Seniors Knockout for players over the age of 55, the Youth Sheild – a competition for under 18’s, the initial rounds of which are played on a zonal basis, the Norman Plum Trophy – a knockout competition for category 3 and 4 players. The Essex Match Play Championship (Allan Lockwood Trophy) a knockout competition which is open to players over 18 with a handicap of less than 28 and is played off handicap. We also run The Essex Foursomes Championships and the Boys Foursomes Championship which are played off scratch, and not forgetting the Mullis Foursomes which is open to all handicaps.

Captain’s Log Marcus Bain interviews Greg Barrett Club Captain at Five Lakes

E

ach month we at the union attempt to track down that vital of Golf Club members-The Club Captain. Often busy with rigorous training, they can be tricky to pin down. We were lucky enough to catch Greg Barrett, Captain of Five Lakes, and ask him a few questions.

 Of all the great and wonderful sports in the world,what was it about golf that attracted you to the game? I started golf late in life having played football when I was younger, it is a sport where you are really only playing yourself and it brings out the competitor in you.

 How long have you been Captain at the club? And what extra duties and responsibilities does your role entail? I took up the captaincy in November 2011 after serving 12 months as Vice Captain. And feel that being a role model in etiquette for the juniors and members to follow.

 What would you say was the high point or greatest achievement for the club since your tenure as Captain, what are you most proud of? As I only took up office in November2011 it is early days in my year as Captain,however the development of our junior section, processing the club to the GolfMark status will be of considerable benefit.

 There are a wide range of great golf facilities in Essex,what makes your club special enough for you to choose it as your home club? It was the local club,but also the friendliest club to a rooky when looking to join. Also having two 18 hole courses, 8 bay driving range extensive practise facilities with practice bunker and chipping green,aswell as putting greens might have had some bearing. Also a good mens calendar and successful Leslie F Wood, Thornton Cup, Essex seniors, Curry and Jubilee Cup teams.

 As Captain, you set an example for younger local players,I`m sure you must often be asked questions and advice by less experienced players. What do you think is the best advice one could give to a young golfer today? To enjoy your golf and the company of likeminded golfers. Observe the etiquette and rules of golf and play with a smile on your face.

 Is the role of Captain what you expected, how does the reality of it compare to the expectations you had of the role when you were younger? Yes the role of Captain is what I expected, but when I was younger it seemed to be in another world. The way this club is run by the committee is a great training ground.

 As Club Captain,who is the most indispensable member of your club,is there anyone you could’t do without? All the officers of the committee are indispensable in there own way`s, but I would not want to lose any of the committee

 What is your relationship to the Chairman? Is there much interplay between the higher ups and the players themselves,or do you act very much a middle ground between the two? The relationship between myself, the President, Secretary,Committee and competition organisers have the strong support of the Chairman and the Crowne Plaza hotel management.

history It seems like such a long time ago when I trained as a Greenkeeper in Australia. I did my apprenticeship at Woollahara Golf Club in Sydney just not far from Bondi. Upon completing my training I was very lucky to be able to work at Royal Sydney Golf Club where I learnt many skills that have helped in my career right up to this present day. After some good years at Royal Sydney I followed the Assistant Super Intendant to another private members club called Pennant Hills golf. It wasn’t long before I got itchy feet and decided to go travelling around the world and my famous last words to my parents were don’t worry I’ll be back soon still echo some 15years later and I am still in the UK. The biggest hurdle was getting recognition for the qualifications I had achieved in Aus. So to cut a long story short pretty much every qualification had to be re-done, spraying, chainsaw, tractor driving, all-

terrain fork lift and the list goes on. My first job in the UK was working at two clubs, Kingswood Golf club and Surrey Downs in Reigate in Surrey then still working for the same company I was promoted to 1st Assistant and moved to Silvermere Golf Club. Still eager to move forward in my career I soon got the Deputy Head Green Keeper’s job at Coombe hill Golf where I was very fortunate do so many training courses and also complete my NVQ level 3 where I was also put forward for the Toro student of the year award where I unfortunately did not win but was lucky enough to be in the final 6. By the time I left Coombe in 2006 to take on the challenging role of Head Greenkeeper at Thorndon Park in Essex my CV was looking pretty full and I was ready for this role. Still keen to improve myself and my career prospect I have continued to update my gained qualifications and at present I am about to enter my second year of doing a foundation degree in sports turf management. Being Head Greenkeeper at Thorndon Park which is one of Harry Colt’s best kept secret Essex gems has been very rewarding to work on and the course, with full support and investment from members and officials has moved from strength to strength to represent a truly stunning golf course that is a pleasure to play and look at any time of the year.

hank you for agreeing to share your thoughts with the official Essex Golf Union Magazine. Clearly the function of maintaining any golf course is critical to the success of a club, and to the enjoyment of those who play it. Unfortunately many see the role of the green-keeping team simply as “cutting the grass� but there is so much more to it than that. Can you tell us what a typical day involves for you and your team? For me the day generally starts about an hour before the rest of my team. An early morning course inspection will assist in implementing planned work for the day and also allow me to record an informed telephone message which members can access to find out the current course conditions. It is hard to describe a typical day for myself as there are so many roles to fill, leading by example to set standards for work, supervising and overseeing current work, report writing, meetings, planning works, budget management, dealing with health and safety issues, tutoring and mentoring staff, talking with members and even putting on my mechanical hat, can be part of any day and being a highly conscious Head Greenkeeper, work more than often spills over into time at home. Staff numbers are boosted by 2 over the summer months to enable the team to produce the best possible playing conditions. Presentation is the highest priority and all the staff takes great pride in producing conditions that are very aesthetically pleasing to the eye and making the experience of playing Thorndon Park a very memorable occasion.

ďƒŽ What topography, soils and sub-soils typify your course, and what are the specific challenges that they pose to you and your team? Thorndon Park covers a vast area of land which over the years has been transformed from a typical park land to a heavily tree lined course with a large water feature that comes into play on the 3rd hole and continues through the course in a series of ditches and smaller ponds that help form the attractive landscape of the course. The course is by no means flat and the clubhouse is situated at the highest point of the land. From the highest points there are some magnificent views over Kent. Soils and sub-soils are very typical for this part of Essex with a mixture of brown, stony clay loams and sandy loams over more clay loams. These soils are not always ideal to work with but they suit this site. The associated problem of seasonal water logging is solved through good drainage and aeration programs, and the soil properties also state good nutrient retention to support the turf grown on site. As clay changes over the season, this can prove for some very testing golf at any level. Obviously the wet conditions over winter can provide an arduous slog around the course but when it dries out and firms up the golfing challenge is very demanding. The main challenge for the team are dealing with the wet conditions but with a good drainage and aeration program in place the course is more than playable almost every day of the year.

 What are other ecology and biodiversity will a player enjoy at Thorndon Park? Thorndon Park is steeped in history and there are many aspects of the course that many visitors will enjoy. Besides the vast array of wildlife that is evident around the course and the countless hectares of woodland, players will enjoy lovely views across the hills of Kent; vistas that meander through woodland and across the course and many other conservation areas that are home to native grasses and wildflowers that grow naturally in and around the course.

 How does the course play during the more difficult periods of weather we experience in the UK – heavy rain, winter months, long dry spells? In the wetter months of the year it is amazing to see just how firm and dry the course remains. There are always going to be areas of concern but for a course that is on top of the London Basin with clay soils, the course copes very well and this is only helped through our drainage and maintenance programs. Summer can provide some very tough conditions not only for the players but from a maintenance point of view as well. Once the Essex clay has dried out and most of the grass species has decided to go dormant through summer drought stress, the Essex clay turns to Essex concrete and playing conditions are more difficult. Even though the course dries out and the turf suffers, definition of fairways, semi-rough and rough still remain. Greens, tees and greens surrounds have irrigation to help maintain the health of the sward but it never fails to amaze just how the presentation and beauty of the course remain in place in just about all extremities.

 What does your routine greens management regime involve such as scarifying, hollow-tining, verti-draining and top dressing? Many golfers are frustrated when the greens are being worked on – can you explain why it is necessary? The tendency to over complicate greens maintenance is very easy to do these days. For me keeping a simple rolling program of fertilizer, wetting agents, amendments and aeration makes maintenance easy. Of course there are bound to be issues that arise but my motto is that if there was something wrong with the maintenance program then the results would be very evident. The Club has a good relationship with our visiting agronomist David Stansfeild who is always at hand for advice and help. Maintenance programs such as top-dressing and aeration are always going to frustrate members but over time I believe that the results speak for themselves. Our greens are in excellent condition as a result of all of our combined maintenance programs but the other key to this success is communication. Being able to illustrate and communicate to the members the benefits and reasons for doing the work goes a long way.

 What grasses are used in your greens and what length of cut do you implement? Does this change throughout the year or for specific tournaments? What speeds do you achieve? Our greens are quite typical of most greens with a mixture of fine grass ranging from poa’s, fescues and bent grasses. These are native to the course and even the fairways support a good fine turf culture with little to rye grasses.


enjoy the round. Golf is a game of mind over matter (if only!) and playing percentage golf, not being too greedy and attacking the pin on every occasion should help any score.

 How is smart technology impacting on the job? Is it helping productivity in any way? Smart technology is just a sign of the times. Unfortunately time does not stand still and whether or not it is your opinion that mod cons help or hinder, is going to be insignificant as the march forward into modern advancement is not going to stop. For me the advancement in communication, computing and machinery electronics is amazing. At times it takes me away or distracts from what I am doing but it helps in so many aspects. Communication and computing enables me to give good evidence for what we are doing or trying to do; record keeping is accurate and legible and machinery advancement will continue to improve reliability, maintenance and operator friendliness will also continue to advance.

 Are there any plans to further invest in technology or machinery at Thorndon Park over the next 12 months? When I first took over as Head Greenkeeper the machinery was poor and this reflected in the way the course was presented. Since this time the club has entered an agreement with Toro and we now lease almost all of our equipment. This enables us to have up to date and very reliable machinery that produces stunning conditions on the course. This year will see one of new leases for fairway mowers, top dresser and utility vehicles renewed to enable us to continue the good work we do.

 What training and development do you and your team benefit from? Is the focus on learning “on the job” or externally?

Cutting heights on the greens will range from 3mm to 5.5mm depending on the time of the year and the pace is usually determined by the firmness of the greens. In recent times the Club has invested in a greens iron that helps maintain a consistent and good pace through regular rolling. This enables us to achieve good pace from 9ft to 12ft without sacrificing height or cover all year round.

 With such an important focus now on environmental stewardship can you tell me what you are doing about sustainable methods of course management? Are you reducing fertilizer and water use? Sustainable golf course management is about maintaining the course to the highest possible standard and at the same time reducing adverse impact and maintaining the environment. Modern technology enables accurate and effective record keeping that shows how, when and why products and programs are used or implemented, and these records can be utilised to improve, reduce and show a commitment to improving techniques and management standards. Obviously sustainable management goes a lot further and other areas that I concentrate on are water management, waste management, recycling and communication.

 Do you have any particular advice for your members or visitors as to how best to score at Thorndon Park? What should they specifically avoid in your opinion?

Training and development is very important when it comes to developing a good team of green keepers. Knowledge, understanding and diversification are vital if you are to produce high standards that suit a course such as Thorndon. All our staff are encouraged to train through the NVQ system and they all do a large variety of other training courses held at the club such as spraying, chainsaws, wood chippers, stump grinders, tractor and loaders, abrasive wheel, first aid, manual handling and so on. Health and safety is always the highest priority and through training many if not all potential risks are reduced to nothing through training. Focus is also high when it comes to on the job training. Creating job diversification is important to me as it not only enables the men to do almost any job on the course but it also takes away the monotony of the job and helps keep the team interested in what they are doing.

 What advice would you give to somebody considering a career as a green-keeper? If you enjoy getting up early almost every day of the year, are broad shouldered and thick skinned and enjoy the outdoors then you will be in for one of the most rewarding and satisfying outdoor jobs going.

The Essex PGA Open Championship which was held at Thorndon Park Golf Club

Essex PGA Round Up Although Essex PGA is taking a Summer Break, we must mention our last and most important event in our calendar - The Essex PGA Open Championship which was held at Thorndon Park Golf Club. Sadly the weather was dreadful and our 36 holes event had to be cut to just 18. Nonetheless, it was exciting enough with sub par scoring in the most trying of conditions. The Winner of the Championship Trophy for 2012 was Thorndon Park Amateur – Ben Horton. Ben’s –4 score of 67 took the Championship by 2 shots from Mark Hooper of Rayleigh DR on 69, closely followed by Jason Levermore and Johnnie Fryatt on –1 70’s. It was a fantastic effort by the young amateur Ben. Ben Horton is pictured right with Ian Plunkett from our sponsor Bird Luckin (Charted Accountants)

The Open Pro/Am held the day before the Championship had a record number of teams playing all generated by Thorndon Park Golf Club. 45 professionals played including Simon Khan, Robbie Coles and former Ryder Cup Star Paul Way. Winners in the Professional Tournament were James Webber and James Scade with a score of 67. In third place was Robbie Coles on 69 and Paul Barham on 70. In the team competition, winning professional Darren Parker and his Chelsea supporting team of Sean Norris, Tony Dines and Tony Burton had 85 points, followed by James Scade with James Perry, Joe Fanning and Dennis LeFort on 82. Our next event is a Junior Pro/Am at Frinton Golf Club on Sunday July 29th and there will be two competitions. A professional and two juniors to play in a pro/am format and for those youngsters who do not have a handicap there will be a 9 hole event on the Havers Academy Course. The cost is £100 for the main event (to include a pro and two juniors) and £35 per pair on the 9 hole course). There will be a BBQ after play plus prizes of course for both professionals and juniors. Our Essex Professionals are now fully committed to The PGA East Region and other National Events.

Steve Cipa who obtained his full playing card on the Seniors Tour had a impressive tied 5th finish in the IPIS Handa PGA Seniors Championship at Slaley Hall. Steve had a three round total of 215 and was 5 shots off the leader Paul Wesselburgh. Steve Cipa is hoping bigger things lie ahead for him after claiming his best finish to date on the European Senior Tour. In a recent interview Steve reported: “I have spent the winter working hard on all aspects of the game,” he said. “This is the first time I’ve had a full card so I’ve got every event bar the Senior Open so it is a really good opportunity for me to bed in and see how I perform.


“As much as I love coaching I want to focus on the Senior Tour this year and I’ve done a lot of work on mental preparations and routines with a good friend of mine Allan Bignell. “He has been instrumental in moving me in a new direction over the last three or four years and he is the reason I am still playing golf I would say. “For me it was a matter of approaching 50, looking back at my career and realising I had to do things differently otherwise I was going to get the same results and that’s when I met Allan. “It’s really been a three to five year process. It’s difficult to change habits when they are ingrained, whether technical or mental, and it takes a lot of time and patience hopefully we see some fruits this year.” Mark Stokes has also been playing in senior events and at the Senior PGA Professional Championship at Northamptonshire County, having led the field for the first two rounds, Mark finished in tied 3rd position with a level par round of 210. It has been a good year for amateur performances in professional events and at The first PGA Order of Merit Event at Orsett Golf Club, Alex Woodward won this 36 hole event with a –6 two round total 138, 1 shot ahead of Jason Levermore. Trainees Mark Talbott, Chris Cutchie, James Smith, James Scade and Andrew Morris all qualified for the Powerade PGA Assistants Championship at East Sussex National. – this event will be held on June 13th – 15th. Other notable performances at recent PGA East Region events include a 1st place for Mark Stokes (Rayleigh DR) at the West Middlesex Pro/Am with a level par round. At Nazeing Golf Club on May 25th JasonLevermore

(Clacton) took 1st place with a –3 score of 69. Trainee John Judd (Hartswood) tied 1st with and Andy Pestell (Chelmsford) Mark Baker (Colchester) at The Chigwell Invitational Charity Pro/Am on May 28th. And finally, at the Maylands Pro/Am on June 6th James Scade took 1st place with a –5 score of 66. Jason Levermore is currently leading the East Region Order of Merit closely followed by Brett Taylor. To close our report, coming up, we have two trips abroad. We are back to France in October for the French Pro/Am. The dates of the trip are Tuesday October 16th – Thursday October 18th. We are staying at The Westminster Hotel and can look forward to the 54 hole championship on Le Touquet La Mer, Wimereux and Hardelot Pins. There are limited spaces left for this very popular event. Also recently launched is our three day trip to Montecastillo near Jerez, Spain next February. We are staying at the 5 Star Resort Hotel, the dates of the trip are Friday February 8th through to Monday February 11th. In his second exclusive piece for the Essex Golf Union magazine, Brigadier Sir Henry Balderdash II O.B.E, ponders on Webb Simpson’s recent success in the US Open, and shares his thoughts on belly putters, and what inspired him to eventual leadership with the Royal Fusiliers.

reetings all you greens loving bounders and cads. So we have our second Major winner of the year. Whilst I was supping furiously on a kummel or two young Webb Simpson brought home the bacon at Olympic eh. I remember back in ’49 enjoying the company of a nubile young thing up at Olympic in ‘Frisco – bloody marvellous posture she had, and pretty good at getting it in the hole too, what. Not convinced of that thing Simpson calls a putter mind you – dashed thing stuck in one’s stomach just isn’t cricket. Now then whilst I might be fond of a drink, in my sober moments I do enjoy reflecting on the wise characters of the past, the leaders and those who were born to inspire. Father used to witter on about a speech made by old boy Roosevelt, said that one needed to get stuck in to achieve anything notable. Hell he went on about it, and on and on. But he was right, old papa, it was a belter. So for all you hungry young competitors remember this: “It is not the critic who counts, not the man who points out where the strong man stumbled, or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena; whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs and comes up short again and again; who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, and spends himself in a worthy cause; who at the best knows in the end the

e at The Essex Golf Union caught up with Michelle Webber – PA to the Secretary and Manager at Channels Golf Club, one of Essex’s premier golf clubs, to find out about the running of the club house, and talk about the inner workings of the local golf industry and what goes on behind the scenes.

 A golf club may seemlike quite an odd place for a wedding reception. Is it common? Do many people choose to have their wedding reception at your club, and if so what sort of things might differ from a more standard wedding reception? Yes it is common and we have weddings at our venue every weekend all tailor made to the individuals.

 We all know a lot of business is conducted over a round of golf, in what ways do you cater especially for corporate or business clients, and what additional facilities are available for conferences and business meetings? We can cater for large corporate events where the golf and the food are tailor made to the individual organising the day. We also have conference facilities available.

 After a long game of golf, I’m sure many find themselves rather peckish. What does your club offer in the way of sustenance, do you use any home grown produce? And what is the most common drink for a player after a game? All of our food is homemade, but I’m not sure I could pick the most common drink. Beers, wines, and orange and lemonades are always up there though.

 Tell me about the hotel aspect of your club, what sort of people stay there? Is it just golfers, or do people that perhaps have no interest in playing golf and are more interested in the grounds stay? We have a separate housing facility that we hire out called the Lodge that can be found on our website, but it’s mainly just golfers that stay.

 How long have you been in your position and what roles does your position entail? 11 years and I am the PA to the Secretary and Manager.


 Golf clubs tend to evoke a family atmosphere; do you have special facilities for children and young people? And are there any offers available to families? Regiment Way, our sister 9 hole course and driving range across the road, has kids clubs and we both have very active junior sections.

 Do you find there has been more interest or more members at your club in the last few years, given the renewed popularity of the game? And what requirements do you need to become a member? We have had several new members this year and do not have any special requirements for new members.

 And finally, is there ever any confusion between the Tea boys and the Tee boys? Yep!

The Channels Complex is set in 300 acres of beautiful mature Essex parkland. Founded in 1974 and starting life as a nine hole course on flat farm land. Over the years sand and gravel has been extracted from surrounding land, landscaped and restored to further golf holes. On 1st April, 1994 27 holes were complete and the Belsteads Course was opened. In years to come more holes will be added and eventually there will be two eighteen hole courses.

Channels Course - Par 71 SSS 71 Channels is our main eighteen hole course and mixes some of the old holes with some of the new. A magnificent course, boasting some of the finest greens in the county, superbly managed and kept in peak condition. Being mainly on restored land, it is quite unique to Essex with its numerous lakes and undulating fairways. There are places where the lower handicapper may wish to test his prowess and “go for the carry” over the lakes, or mere mortals can take the safe route down the fairway. Watch out for the 17th, it’s a real card wrecker!!

What’s in the bag? An insight to the chosen equipment of Simon Khan - European Tour pro

Captured the biggest title of his career in May 2010 when he became the first sponsor’s invitation to win the BMW PGA Championship, The European Tour’s flagship event. His one stroke win, courtesy of a closing round of 66 over the remodelled West Course at Wentworth Club, earned him a cheque for €750,000 and a five-year exemption. First made his winning breakthrough on The European Tour International Schedule in June 2004 when he came back from four shots behind with seven holes to play to defeat Paul Casey at the second hole of a sudden-death play-off for the Celtic Manor Wales Open. It was just reward having started the week with a stunning course

record 61 at The Celtic Manor Resort. Cited the victory of his close friend Scott Drummond in the PGA Championship at Wentworth Club the previous week as the inspiration for his own win in Wales. Had to go to the Qualifying School to earn his card for the 2010 season and did so in emphatic fashion, winning the six-round Final Stage at PGA Catalunya Resort in Spain. Inspired to take up golf as a 12 year old after watching Seve Ballesteros win The Open Championship at St Andrews in 1984. Introduced to the game by his grandfather. Played golf for Essex before turning professional at the age of 18. A keen Arsenal FC fan.

Brett’s history Brett represented Essex and England as an Amateur golfer turning professional in 1999. As a professional his experience covers all levels, from winning several mini tour events, playing the Challenge Tour and also several European tour events. Brett completed his PGA training in 2008 at Chelmsford Golf Club. Since then as well as playing regional golf, has worked hard to share and grow his knowledge of the game.

Specialising in short game and performance coaching, Brett is gaining a reputation as one of the up and coming coaches in the region. Over 65% of the game is played within 70 yards of the hole. Gaining knowledge and improving this area of the game is essential to any players improvement.


Questions for Coaches Corner:  How long have you been a qualified PGA Professional and what drew you towards Chelmsford Golf Club? I have been fully qualified for 4 years and was lucky enough to start my PGA training here at Chelmsford Golf Club. I have always liked playing here and then Mark Welch the Head Professional needed an assistant.

 There has been, and still is, some fantastic talent floating around the Essex golf scene, who are some of the better players that you have taught in the past and is there anyone you recommend we should look out for in the future? There are several really good young players from Chelmsford Golf Club that I coach. Jack Hiluta is definitely one to watch having recently won the Spanish Amateur and performing well in the Spanish Open on the European Tour. Another is Chelsea Mae-Launden who is part of the England girls coaching.

 Golf is a great sport to be involved with from a young age as it teaches us manners, etiquette, and quality social skills. What age would you recommend that parents get their children started up with the game? As long as they are safe and having fun then I think it is a great sport to get into at any age. Golf is becoming much easier for children to start as well, with many schools coaching tri golf.

 Many of the counties PGA pro’s still play in tournaments such as the East Region PGA events. Do you participate in such events, and if so how did you get on last year? I had a successful year playing consistently throughout, winning the regional Order of Merit. I enjoy playing and play most regional pro-ams and events but teaching is becoming more of a priority.

 Golf comes with a lot of ups and downs. What would you say is the highlight of your career so far, either teaching or playing? Playing in the Open Championship at Royal Troon in 2004 was a fantastic moment for me. You dream to tee it up on the world’s greatest stage but to get to do it was brilliant. I struggled with the pressure on the first day and was well off the cut mark, but it was an incredible experience and one that I won’t forget.

Sometimes something very simple can get your game back on track so stay patient or visit a PGA Professional for a lesson.

 Golfers are always looking to get ahead of their competitors. Do you have anything in your arsenal of teaching methods, whether that is some new technology or general knowledge about the golf swing that is unique to you, and that you’d be willing to share with us? Over 65% of a round of golf is played within 70 yards of the green, yet when golfers are not scoring as well as they would, they, like most, head straight for the driving range. Try to work as much on your short game as on the driving range.

 There are so many leading golf brands on the market today that it can often get very difficult to choose which driver or which set of irons is best to buy. What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to buy a new club or a new set, and is having them custom fitted that important? Golf equipment is very important and custom fitting is a must. Most PGA professionals will have fitting available or can organize for you to go to the manufacturers fitting centre.

 Along with all the brands to choose from, there are also a lot of shops to choose to buy them from. What brands do you stock in your shop, what made you choose them, and do you have any great offers available at the moment? Chelmsford GC stock many premium brands such as Titleist, Cobra and Callaway and we always have various promotions and deals. Buying the correct equipment is really important - be cautious that you know exactly what you are buying from the internet. PGA professionals can give you the advice and fitting to get the right equipment for you.

 There are over 30,000 golfers in the county of all different standards and levels. Now tell us the truth, have you ever had any lessons where you’ve really had to hold the laughter in because the person was just that bad? No, not really! I once played with Ryder cup player Eamon Darcy and I was amazed by how bad his swing looked and then watched in awe as he never missed a shot, making birdies everywhere. There is always a way.

 Everyone has days where nothing is going right for them on the golf course and they feel like just giving up and walking in. What would be the best piece of advice that you could give to someone in this situation? Golf is a funny game in the fact that you have to deal with failure much more than you do success. So as long as you can battle on and give each shot your best there is always next week.

One of my biggest influences is Jack Nicklaus, who said that “golf is played with the feet” and indeed he was famous for leaving his footprints in the dirt after teeing-off.

It is also approved as a coaching resource for the World Golf Teacher’s Federation, European Senior Tour and Ladies European Tour and was a featured coaching method in the recent Golfers’ World Summit.

Also of course the late, great Ben Hogan said that the golf swing comes from “the ground upwards”.

Read on to discover how the Eastern approach to player performance is quietly changing the way golf is taught and learned…

 Can you tell us a little bit about your background, and how you came to develop chi-power GOLF? I’ve been practising an Eastern art called T’ai Chi for the past 25 years. T’ai Chi is a martial art and form of ‘moving meditation’ which has many advantages for the committed golfer. Around 2002, I turned my attention towards working full-time with golfers and I’m pleased to say that chipower GOLF – which is based on fundamental principles of T’ai Chi - is now one of a number of innovative approaches that forms part of the PGA’s Professional Development Programme. T’ai Chi is an art which is based on the philosophy that stillness is the master of motion. In T’ai Chi the mind sets the intention for the movement and the body responds to the mind’s intent. We call this the Yi (intent) moving the Chi (energy). Also, in T’ai Chi we use our body in a particular way, as the practitioner seeks to empty the upper body, relaxing and releasing muscular tension, thus develop a strong root in the feet and legs. We say, “Stand like a mountain, move like a flowing river”. In effect, this is what all golf coaches are implying, when they say that a good swing is the result of the bigger muscles of the lower body powering the motion of the downswing, with the upper body following. David Leadbetter expressed it best as “The dog wagging the tail, not the tail wagging the dog!” I got more and more interested in golf as I realised that everything we’re trying to do in the martial arts and all the ways we have of developing our mind~body connection can be applied immediately to help the golfer develop a more fluid, powerful and effortless swing.

This immediately struck a chord with me as Yang Chen Fu, one of the most famous of all T’ai Chi masters, actually wrote that “T’ai Chi is rooted in the feet, moves through the waist and is expressed in the hands”. So immediately, you can see the parallels between the two arts.

Hogan’s archetypal swing clearly comes from the ground upwards In T’ai Chi we use this groundforce energy developed through the legs and feet as our power-source to throw a punch or kick. In golf, the more a golfer can relax and get rooted in their feet at address, the more potential energy they have to power through the ball so you’re right to say that chipower GOLF is a very dynamic system, as this ground force energy (“golf is played with the feet”) results in an extraordinary and effortless amount of power.

 What aspects of a golfer’s game do your methods benefit? There are two main areas in which chi-power GOLF can benefit golfers the most, and they are the mental game and the ability to produce a fluid, natural swing when the pressure is on (like on the first tee or holing-out to win a round). We’ve touched a little on the use of the body in T’ai Chi and it’s definitely this whole area of stillness and grounding that is the most important in terms of the golfer using their body more efficiently and developing a more natural, consistent swing.

 What are the similarities and differences between your methods and, say, more traditional methods?

 What about the mental aspect of your teaching? How similar is it to sports psychology?

The biggest difference is that I ask golfers to put away their clubs when they first start training with me. Only after they have mastered some basic principles of chi-power GOLF can they then apply it, first to short strokes like putting and chipping and later to the full swing. My whole methodology is about working with the golfer’s mind, body and breathing, so they learn to stay relax and be centred, even under pressure – if they can do this, their swing will be natural and easy and be endlessly repeatable.

chi-power GOLF is a much simpler and more direct approach to helping the golfer master key mental game skills. I’m not against sports psychology at all but even positive thoughts are still thoughts and leave the golfer in the realm of the mind, when it’s really best to be centred in the body. Martial artists take the view that the mind, body and breath are one entity, so in chi-power GOLF, when we train the body, for instance to gain rooting power through standing meditation, we are simultaneously training the mind to acknowledge distractions (like the internal dialogue) without giving them energy or attention. It’s a sorry fact that golf has pretty much plateaued as a sport, where the 18-hole score for the average player remains at 99.6 after many decades. Another worrying statistic shows that the vast majority of golfers – some 98% - stop improving after their first 3 years of playing, at which point an all too familiar plateau is reached which only 2% of people manage to break through.

 Do you have to be an elite player to perform the exercises? No, they are simple principles that can be learned and practised by anybody, and the benefits are pretty much instantaneous, but of course you need to put some effort in yourself - so for the committed golfer, it’s a definite path to improvement. You can practise the principles two or three times a week, for just 20 minutes per session and gain notable improvements in a few short weeks or months.

 Can you perform chi-power GOLF exercises just before a game? Absolutely, but you would have to make the drills part of your weekly practice routine first, as the skills need to become ‘second nature’ and can’t just be pulled from the bag along with your clubs on the morning of the game! I take all my clients through a progressive training programme of practising the exercises at home, then applying the principles on the range and putting green, then applying them while preparing to play, and finally while actually playing.

I believe the reasons for golf’s stagnation are simple. Number one: the golf swing is approached as a “technique to get right” and Number two: the swing is viewed and coached as a separate component from the mental game. It’s no wonder the average handicap hasn’t improved!

chi-power GOLF is all about developing awareness of your body, mind and breathing, so you can learn to stay relaxed (both mentally and physically) and take command of your natural swing, reproducing it time and again around the course for more consistency and those pure golf shots every player craves. Reaching your potential as a golfer is about doing less not more and certainly the skills that can be developed from chi-power GOLF give an extra dimension to gaining fundamental skills like attention control, relaxed concentration and the ability to stay calm under pressure.

 How did last season go for you and what was your main highlight? My season last year got off to a poor start, shooting a few high scores from March -June, and not putting in the amount of practice I wanted to due to my GCSE exams. However after these were out of the way I started playing far better golf and began to compete again. It got off to a good start by winning the Club Championship at Stock Brook and winning the Three Rivers Junior Open and Stock Brook Junior Open and over the last 5 months of the year lowering my handicap from 2.5 to +0.5. My highlight of last year was shooting the amateur course record at Stock Brook in a club competition 66 (-6).

 Based on your performance last season, how do you aim to better that and what are your goals for the 2012 season? After a positive end to last year my handicap enabled me to build a schedule for 2012 around national events. I feel the only way to make yourself a better golfer is to play around better players and learn things from them and I will be able to do this in national events. This season I aim for some top finishes in the national events, making cuts and getting in to the mix come the final round, and winning a few Essex Order of Merit events would also be nice.

 Which tournament are you looking forward to the most this year in Essex and why? I am really looking forward to the Essex Amateur this year at Cannons Brook. I finished 6th at Crondon Park last year but it should have been better due to a poor last round, however I will be looking to better that finish at this year’s one, after gaining more experience throughout last year.

 Out of all the courses being used for the Order of Merit tournaments this year, which one is your favorite and why? My favourite course is Upminster as they never fail to get their greens in great condition and very quick. We rarely get to play on greens like that throughout Essex but it’s nice to turn up at Upminster when the greens are in immaculate condition.

 Essex is probably one of the most competitive counties for golf in the country, which is great from a player’s perspective with regards to challenge. But will you look elsewhere for tournaments and maybe compete at a more national level? Essex is a great county for golf and there is also great competition throughout every single Order of Merit event with lots of low handicap golfers. However this year I will be looking to play in more national events and fewer Essex events as I feel this is the only way I will improve.

 Golf can get extremely expensive at times, what kind of support have you had growing up, have you ever worked, and who is your biggest fan?

 Essex boasts a variety of great golf courses. Other than Stock Brook what are your 2 favourite courses to play and why?

My family has supported my golf since I was 11 years old, and the expense hasn’t really been an issue until the last year or so where I’ve started staying away a lot, paying for hotels and petrol. It becomes extremely expensive but sometimes you have to do what is necessary and make sacrifices to become the best you can be. My biggest fans would be my family who never fail to support me in every event I play in. I used to struggle playing with my dad around, like most of the other lads, but now as I have grown up and matured I take every offer of him caddying and take on board his advice as there’s no better advice than that from your parents. I work for my dad 2 days a week to enable me to pay for the things I need like golf balls, clothes etc.

My 2 favorite golf courses in Essex apart from Stock Brook are Orsett and Thorndon Park. Orsett as it is very different, setting a complete different challenge to most courses in Essex and Thorndon Park as it is always in brilliant condition and is always enjoyable to play.

 You’re a member at Stock Brook Manor, so I’m sure you know it very well. What do you like most about the course and what is the lowest score you’ve ever shot round there? Stock Brook Manor is one of the longer in the county which seems to suit my game better than some of the tighter, shorter courses in Essex. The course is demanding, with lots of long irons into par 4s and 3 par 3’s around the 200 yard mark. The greens are also challenging as they are very big and sloping so in some cases you may be better off missing the greens! The key to a good score around Stock Brook is to take advantage of the par 5’s. My best score at Stock Brook is 6 under par (66) which I achieved last October and it is also the amateur course record.

 Have you ever won the Club Championship at Stock Brook and would you say you were the best player at the club? I won the Club championships at Stock Brook in 2010 and 2011 at the ages of 15 and 16. Technically I am the best player at Stock Brook looking at my handicap, however there is a great group of 5 or 6 guys who are always up there competing with myself, putting me under pressure which is a great thing as it makes me up my game and compete to a higher level.

 The Thornton Cup is the most prestigious of the knockout trophies for club teams in the county, how is the Stock Brook team shaping up this year and can you see your team going all the way? In the past few years our team hasn’t had the best Thornton Cup history; however I feel this year we have a good chance. On paper we don’t have a great team compared to some out there but our lads are all great friends, knowing each other well, and each other’s golf games well. The boys also never fail to give 100% in every game they play. I hope the willpower of every player can get them through each game if they come up against a tough opponent. We got off to a good start beating Forrester Park 12-3 which I didn’t play in, but I am looking forward to the next round away at The Burstead.

 Golf is obviously a very difficult sport and we all make our mistakes and hit bad shots from time to time. Can you tell us about your most embarrassing shot or moment on the golf course that you can recall? Well following on from the Thornton cup question; I was picked for the 2nd round of the Thornton cup in 2008 when I was only 13, and I was picked after a big win in the Youth Shield the day before. Stepping on to the 1st tee in the afternoon, I could not hold the club as I was so nervous, and I thinned/topped my driver through the hedge 50 yards on the left in front of the tee. However I made 4 and won the hole and eventually won my match 3&1 and we went on to win the game.

I would like to be a full time playing professional on the European tour.

Essex Seniors Team Championship ESSEX SENIORS CHAMPIONS Played at Chelmsford Golf Club – 14th &15th June 2012 Hat-trick of victories for Geoff King The Essex Seniors Championship, played at Chelmsford on 14th and 15th June, demonstrated that age is no barrier to good golf. There were many good scores returned on a challenging course in less than ideal weather conditions. After the first day Ian Southgate (Southend-on-Sea) had a 5 shot lead after a gross score of 70, from Geoff King of West Essex Golf Club and Ronald Wilkes (Orsett) who both shot 75. The second round was played in strong wind and rain at times and many competitors struggled in the conditions. Ian Southgate could not maintain his first round form and returned a gross 82 to finish in third place with a score of 150 on count back.

Geoff King who previously won the Essex Seniors Championship in 2007 and 2009, returned the best score of the day with a gross 74, and that was enough to win with a total score of 149 from Mike Heiser (The Warren) on 152. Veterans Trophies Played at North Weald Golf Club Monday 25 June 2012

Five Lakes Golf Club take the honours at the North Weald. Jim Fern of Five Lakes Golf Club won the Essex Veterans Trophy and his club mate Barry Turner also from Five Lakes won the over 70’s Trophy. The event took place at North Weald Golf Club on Monday 25th of July, the course was in excellent condition and the competitors enjoyed some excellent sunny weather. The conditions for this Seniors League match against Hertfordshire were ideal. After nine holes Essex were up in 2 matches and down in 8. However, after the completion of the first 7 games the score now read Essex 4½ – Herts 2½ - and the winners of the South East Group qualifier (Herts) just 4 days ago realised that they has a fight on their hands. With 3 games remaining Essex only needed 1 point to complete a fine come back and take the Match. Alas, it was not to be, with Herts taking the last 3 games to pinch the match 5½ to 4½. Wins by Geoff King, Jeff Woolgrove, Chris Herrington, Alan Connell and a half by Brendon Booth had given Essex the opportunity, but not taken. However, well done to the whole team.

The Colt second league match was played on a blustery 1st of July against Middlesex at Stapleford Abbott Golf Club. Once again the need to find the fairway was paramount, as venturing into the rough invariably meant a lost ball. The morning foursomes were generally tightly fought with two of the games going to the last hole. The Campbell/Franklin pair was the exception – a 5&3 win. With an eventual 3½/½ lead lunch spirits were high. The afternoon singles began to look a different affair. After nine holes only Bobby Keeble and Hugh Campbell seemed to have the measure of their opponents. Two of the other games were all square and four were firmly in Middlesex hands. With Bobby and Hugh recording early wins of 5&4 and 6&5 respectively word went round to the rest of the team galvanising them into action. Ben Franklin then achieved a 2&1 win and four other games went to the last hole. A fine team effort resulted in a 10/2 win. Our final league match will be against Bedfordshire on 21st July at Theydon Bois Golf Club.

Match Report With the match at Brookmans Park Golf Club the Colts began the season against Hertfordshire. Having a fifty percent new team we were off to a flying start with Wallace/Carroll and Evans/Campbell bringing in 4/3 and 4/2 wins respectively. The Francis/Morris and Slater/Plumb combinations followed up with 3/2 and 3/1 results. With a four nil sheet going in to lunch, spirits were high. The afternoon singles quickly proved to be a much harder affair. Over the front nine there was nothing between the teams, both up in three games and two games halved. An early 4/2 win by Danny Carroll boosted our morale, though this was tempered by an early lost game. George Evans won 2/1 and Reece Francis went down the 18th one up, so we would creep over the line. At this point the remaining games could go either way. Alasdair Plumb headed down the last hole one and gained an additional half point. The remaining matches going to Herts. An honest but tough course brought home the need to find the fairways off the tee as the rough was very punishing.

Match Report On a cold wet and windy day at Rochford Hundred Golf Club, Essex showed once again this year, what a formidable force they are in County golf. Playing against a full strength Hertfordshire team which included two England players, Essex got off to a good start in the morning foursomes with Pearl & Evans paired together for the first time winning 6&4 closely followed by May & Oliver winning 3&2. A half from new cap Jordan Slater and local man Arthur Leonard set us up for the afternoon singles with a one point lead. In the singles Essex showed their quality and perhaps the experience to handle conditions better, and came home with wins from Dee, Pearl, May, Philips, and debutant Jordan Slater who made a fine start to his County career winning 5&3. Halves from Leonard and Evans sealed a good win for the unbeaten Essex side. To emphasise the quality of the play, Hertfordshire player Scott Bailey was 5 under par and lost 3&2. While we congratulate Jordan on his debut, we are sad to lose Reece Phillips who joins the professional ranks following this game. Over the years Reece has been a credit to our County and we wish him every success. The staff at Rochford should also be commended for presenting us with a fine course to play, and also doing running repairs during the day to keep the water at bay. Bob Paton County Team Manager

EGU South Eastern Group Boys Qualifying, Royal Mid Surrey GC 7th June 2012 Essex Boys Runners up in EGU SE Boys Qualifying This event is the most important team event in the English counties junior golfing calendar. The South Eastern Group includes eleven county teams from Norfolk round to Hampshire. The eleven counties selected teams of six under 18 boys making up the cream of English junior golfers. The winning county goes on to represent the SE in a national final later in the year. Representing Essex were; James Allan (capt) of Chelmsford GC, Mason Papple of Stock Brook Manor; Tom Barker of Channels GC; Ben David of Colchester GC; Reece Francis and Bobby Keeble of Abridge GC; and Tom Howard of Burnham on Crouch GC. The competition format is two consecutive scratch medal rounds of 18 holes. The best five from six scores count towards a team score. The Mid Surrey course is rated among the top inland courses in England and is bordered with Kew Gardens, the River Thames and Old Deer Park. The 120 year old course was in excellent condition and proved a very good test of golf, with narrow tree lined fairways and large greens all well protected by bunkers. The weather forecast for the day was wet and windy. The early starters were fortunate to get a dry start, but once the rain came it was torrential for most of the day. The EGU organisers and RMS green staff performed miracles to keep the course open to a final conclusion over 36 holes.

The morning round in easier conditions was not the best of starts for a strong Essex team although Bobby Keeble managed an excellent level par and Mason Papple came in at one over par. Apart from Reece Francis (4 over) the team score left a disappointed Essex team in fifth place behind Herts, Hampshire, Kent and Sussex, with Hertfordshire’s Nick Ward leading the field with an incredible six under par. The afternoon round teed off in heavy rain with gusting winds, not ideal conditions for good golf, however it did present an opportunity for those players with the strength of character to deal with such conditions and move up the leader board. The Essex team performance improved in the afternoon, but Hampshire performed better. James Allan the Essex captain from Chelmsford GC performed a heroic round in the trying conditions and finished one over par posting the best individual score of the afternoon. While James was well supported by Reece Francis and Tom Barker both at three over par and Bobby Keeble at five over, the team score was only good enough to earn Essex second place to winners Hampshire. The Essex team had high expectations this year, but should not be too disappointed with second place to an excellent Hampshire team in such difficult conditions. Final team scores. Under 16 League Match Essex v Kent v Surrey, Play at Benton Hall Golf Club, 6th June 2012 The morning round comprised of nine holes of foursomes which started brightly with all the Essex boys finding the fairway, unfortunately after that we lost our way with only Michel Sarling (Team Captain) and Jack Philips recording wins beating both opposing counties. The other success was Marc Brenner and Connor Morris who went on to beat the Kent duo but lost to Surrey. At the end of the morning our total score was 6 points, Surrey with 9 and Kent with a total of 15 points.

The afternoon round was 18 holes of match play where Mitchell Sarling again played a Captain’s round by beating both Counties and in so doing recorded the largest win of the day of 9 & 8. Jack Phillips, David Briffaut, Dominic Piccolo, Connor Morris all won one match each with Marc Brenner being last man out beating both opponents and finishing with a magnificent chip in on the 17th to win his match against Kent. Total points for the afternoon were – Essex 20, Surry 19 and Kent 21 – all very close. Overall winners were Kent.

Essex Under 14: Order of Merit Gosfield Lake Report – Sunday 6th May 2012 – The First Round.

I

n selecting the beginning of May for this first event we thought that we might be blessed with some good weather. Unfortunately leading up to the weekend we had suffered such downpours of rain that the match taking place was put in doubt. However thanks to some hard work by the greens staff, Gosfield Lake were pleased to open their course for play (without trolleys). With some very young players taking part on a long course in difficult conditions we were concerned for all the boys, particularly in carrying their bags. So for one match only (we hope!) we stretched the County rule and permitted dads to be bag carriers. I’m not sure that this was appreciated too much by the Dad’s union who normally take some time out for a cuppa during their son’s round, but it was much appreciated by the organisers and most of the boys. Unfortunately bag carrying was not the only problem, because the rain started as we began the afternoon and stayed with us, and the day got colder and colder. It was to the credit of the boys that not one gave up. All finished the day and handed in cards, although some must have been pretty disheartened by the end of the round. Of course under the conditions, play was slow and the final result therefore much delayed. The result was also hindered by some poor card marking, which, under the conditions was to be expected, but we do feel that we must encourage the boys to take much more care in this aspect. The competition is divided into age groups at each venue, with running totals giving winners at the end of the five events. The winners in each age group at Gosfield Lake were as follows:

Josh Boxhall, Ben Franklin and Michael Gilbert all played below their handicaps, but there were some very creditable scores from some of the more senior boys who showed that the conditions could be beaten. In particular, U14 - Jack Dyer 26 pts, Zac Taylor 24 pts and Callum Hilton 25pts off scratch. All boys played off the back tees in very poor conditions. Most club golfers would have had difficulties on the day. My thanks to all parents who supported and helped with the day, in particular Samantha Maynard who did so much of the ground work prior to the day, and also to Jamie Kean who could not make the day but was instrumental in getting the whole idea started. Essex Under 14: League Match Surrey vs Kent vs Essex Pyrford Golf Club, Surrey – 20th May 2012

O

n a cold, windy day when thankfully the clouds that threatened rain decided that we had suffered enough, the Essex boys took the long trip to Woking in Surrey for their second league match of the year. On paper this appeared to be our toughest match of our small league commitments with Kent and Surrey fielding traditionally strong teams.

By the end of the first nine holes things were looking bright for the Essex boys who had nearly all started strongly. Callum Hilton had made an impressive start and was convincingly ahead in both his matches, Ryan Cox (pictured left) played the front nine to par but his opponents were both hanging on to his shirt tails and it was obviously going to be a tough match to win. Jack Dyer, playing steady golf, reported a small lead in both matches and Dylan Mahmut was cheerful about his prospects. Andrew Vagisi was not playing quite up to his usual form and was struggling. Oscar Yeomans reported playing one under par for the nine holes. Understandably our excitement

subsided a little with our back four players struggling against their Kent and Surrey opponents. A tremendous fight back from the Surrey Captain, Max O’Hagan, took a point away from Callum Hilton on the last hole. The next three Essex boys, Ryan Cox, Jack Dyer and Dylan Mahmut, all took maximum points, but in a real battle to halve both his matches Andrew Vagisi displayed character and determination to earn two points for the team. Oscar Yeomans played 3 over par but only managed to hang on to a win over his Kent opposition on the last hole; whilst in the run in for the last four members of the team, having been behind at the turn on, Keiron Whiting failed to score a point. This was a fine win for Essex, but the boys will need to play again to their highest standard in their last match at Ilford if they are to retain the title. Surrey are fierce opponents and Essex beat them in this match by 11-9 – the narrowest of margins. There will be no room for complacency. he Essex team are beginning to think that the gods are against them. Every meeting, including coaching, matches, Order of Merit and pro demonstrations has been severely affected by the awful weather this year. The worst of the weather seems to save itself for the Under 14 squad and this match was no exception.

At this stage some players had not even reached the half way point and it was felt that no real satisfactory result could be obtained from the position of play especially as nearly all matches had no more than a two hole difference between the players with at least 5 holes to play.
