Welcome If truth be told, my first association with golf was in the mid 1950’s when a friend told me I could earn as much as five shillings (that’s 25p for our younger readers) for one round of caddying, the same as I was earning for a whole week’s paper round! So the following week I went along to the West Essex Golf Club and got a job caddying for a member in a Thornton Cup match. That member turned out to be the very well-known Dingy Bell, and I soon became his regular caddy. I had a very enjoyable time as the regular caddy of one of the best young golfers in the club, and together we travelled all over the south of England to major clubs and tournaments. I was so inspired by these early impression that, after spending 40 years in the property business, I sold my firm and retired early to devote more of my time to the county and the sport that I love. During my 22 years on the Essex Golf Union, I have seen the county go from strength to strength. We have more promising new talent than ever before. And in 2009 of course, came our first ever English County Championship win. We truly do have much to be proud of. It is therefore my sincere pleasure to introduce you, dear reader, to the official Essex Golf Union magazine, which we hope will enable us to inspire and inform you, and whip up some Essex spirit. Within this magazine we will regularly provide top interviews and probing features on the great and good of Essex golfing past and present. We will encourage local golfers and golf enthusiasts of all ages and abilities by providing information on scholarships and coaching programmes. This, dear readers, is not my magazine, it is our magazine. You may write or email your thoughts, ideas or suggestions for articles, ensuring this is truly a community magazine. The world has changed a lot since the days that I earned five shillings for a day of caddying. The union aims to move with the times whilst retaining our respect for the game and sense of tradition. The reason we have created this digital magazine, is to get all the information about our favourite game in our favourite county straight to you as efficiently as possible. We hope you are proud of what we are aiming to achieve and showcase, and we urge you to spread the word! First We Take Romford, Then We Take The World: President Mike Spall talks us through the Proud History of The Essex Golf Union

t was on a blustery late February day in 1924 that amateur golfers from Woodford to Wanstead, from Ilford to Boyce Hill, mustered their forces at Romford Golf Club united in the sole aim of promoting and developing amateur golf in their county. Representatives from no less than sixteen clubs gathered here on this historic day, and, after several ales, The Essex Golf Union was born. Under the watchful eye of First President of The Union and Captain of Wanstead Golf Club, J. J. Esplen, the members set about arranging a competition. The first arranged by the Union was a 36 holes medal, which became the Essex Amateur Championship, and was open to members of all Essex Clubs with a handicap of 12 or under. In 1924 Mr.C.Law (club unknown) was the first ever Essex Amateur Champion. The Championship continued to be played over 36 holes until 1955 when it was expanded to its current format of 72 holes. Early Minutes of the Union Committee Meetings reveal that

a number of notable people including Sir Winston Churchill, T. A. Torrance (Captain Walker Cup Team), Bernard Darwin and the Lord Chief Justice were all invited to the Union’s Annual Dinners on various occasions. We can only assume Churchill himself was more interested in the ale than the golf, given he once described his experience of playing the game as “Like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture.” The Essex Golf Union has gone from strength to strength over the years, never faltering in its aim to promote, encourage and inspire Essex amateur golfers. The creation of many more competitions and trophies is testament to this- The Veterans Trophy (Est. 1927), The Boys Championship (Est. 1932), and The Youth Shield (Est. 1951) to name but a few. This patronage and local encouragement has led to notable successes with Essex at a national level. (See subsection 1. Notable Firsts)

10 ESSEX GOLF UNION history Throughout the years we have produced many outstanding players. In the 1950/60’s there was Ken Budd of West Essex and Sir Michael Bonallack of Thorpe Hall. The record of Sir Michael was quite outstanding and he was perhaps the greatest amateur of modern times winning the Essex County Championship 9 times from 1954, and a multitude of regional and national accolades culminating in his tenure as President of the English Golf Union and rightfully inducted into The World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001. In recent years we have continued to help, encourage and develop many golfers that have fared well both in amateur ranks and, later, professionally. (See Subsection 2. Current Successful Players) In line with its objectives, The Essex Golf Union is proud to promote Golf at its highest level. We currently run Teams at under 14, under 16, under 18, colts (under 21), full County Team and Seniors (over 55’s.) In addition we have a wide range of coaching programmes to suit all levels, ages and abilities. We also arrange a number of County Competitions, including The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy and The Chigwel Bowl, and organise various Club Team Events. (See Subsection 3. Tournaments) With an extremely talented team and incredible amounts of dedication and hard work, golf in our county has gone from strength to strength, and in 2009 we saw the most well deserved success when we were crowned the English County Champions for the first time. Though we have a long and distinguished history, there has never been a more promising and exciting time in Essex Golf, and in conjunction with our global media partners Think Sports Media Ltd, we are putting every resource into ensuring further success in the future.

Sussex, Hampshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Middlesex, Kent and B.B. & O. in a tremendously exciting finish at Northwood G. C. on 31st July 1971. In the final Staffordshire only narrowly beat Essex.

1997 – For the second time in its history the County team gained first place in the S.E group qualifying competition for the English County Championship.

1997 – For the first time in the history of ECAGU the boys won the English Boys County Championship. The Boys Team also won the S.E. Foursomes Championship.

2009

– For the first time in our history the County Team won the English Men’s County Championship. The Team was Matt Southgate, Jack Winer, James Webber, Andy Shakespeare, Ross Dee, Ross Spurgeon and Jay Beiser. In addition Dale Whitnell played in the qualifying event but had turned professional before the final.

Current success Notable examples are the Walker Cup Players Richard McEvoy, Oliver Fisher and Dale Whitnell. We currently have Simon Khan, Lloyd Kennedy, Richard McEvoy, Matt Southgate , Oliver Fisher and Robbie Coles on the European Tour, Dale Whitnell and Dan Brooks on the Challenge Tour and many promising players who are progressing through the lower ranked professional tours. In addition we have Geoff King of West Essex who won the English Seniors Championship and who represents England Internationally, Jack Heasman who has represented England at Junior level and Jack Hiluta who has also represented England.

Tournaments County Tournaments – The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy, The Chigwell Bowl, The Romford Trophy, and The Upminster Bowl. Club Team events – The Thorton Cup, an interclub knockout played off scratch. There is also the Leslie Wood Trophy an interclub knockout for players with handicaps of 7.5 or over, The Seniors Knockout for players over the age of 55, the Youth Sheild – a competition for under 18’s, the initial rounds of which are played on a zonal basis, the Norman Plum Trophy – a knockout competition for category 3 and 4 players. The Essex Match Play Championship (Allan Lockwood Trophy) a knockout competition which is open to players over 18 with a handicap of less than 28 and is played off handicap. We also run The Essex Foursomes Championships and the Boys Foursomes Championship which are played off scratch, and not forgetting the Mullis Foursomes which is open to all handicaps.

Captain's Log Marcus Bain interviews Andy May – Essex County Club Captain

ach month we at the Union Magazine attempt to track down that most vital of Golf Club members- The Club Captain. Often busy with rigorous training, they can be tricky to pin down. We were lucky enough to catch Andy May, Captain of Essex County, and ask him a few questions.

Boyce Hill is a very demanding golf course and through it I learnt the skills required to play on tricky slopes and fairways. I would say that it has benefitted me hugely since joining and has given me the confidence to play on anything that is thrown at me.

 Of all the great and wonderful sports in the world, what was it about golf that attracted you to the game? It was never a sport that I ever set out to play. I was a huge rugby fan and played for the school but then one afternoon I went out with my dad for a spot of golf and loved it. Since then I haven’t looked back and now after 16 years of playing it across the globe on some of the best courses I cannot imagine playing any other sport.

 How long have you been Captain of the County? And what extra duties and responsibilities does your role entail? I have been captain since January 2010 when my predecessor David Miller asked me to fill his very honoured boots. My role is to be a direct liaison with the players and the manager. I help with the team decisions and generally organise the daily running of the team.

 What would you say was the high point or greatest achievement for the County since your tenure as Captain, what are you most proud of? Apart from being asked to be captain – which is a huge honour, I would have to say getting the team together. It is great to gather together the best of the best, those capable of competing and winning the trophies and medals that we all aim for. 2012 will be a good year for us – the squad that we have now are brilliant and so far we have already won 2 trophies.

 There are a wide range of great golf facilities in Essex, what makes your club special enough for you to choose it as your home club? Originally I was a member at Burnham on Crouch where I played a lot with my dad but it was quite a lengthy journey and was just not viable, especially as I live practically on Boyce Hill.

 As Captain, you set an example for younger local golfers, I’m sure you must often be asked questions and advice by less experienced players. What do you think is the best advice one could give to a young golfer today? There are so many different things to say in the right scenario. The best advise that I offer is to practice hard, keep your head and never give up on your dreams. However, on the flip side of that I would always say that it’s not for everyone. I have lived, breathed and worked in the industry and I have seen that it’s not for everyone.

 Is the role of Captain what you expected, how does the reality of it compare to the expectations you had of the role when you were younger? I have been in the County set up for nearly 10 years so I roughly know what is the daily routine, however there is so much more behind the scenes that no one knows.

 As County Captain, who is the most indispensable member of your club, is there anyone you couldn’t do without? We have a fantastic squad and I deem them all indispensable.

position Course manager history I had a successful career in Retail Management with J.Sainsburys for 12 years and in 1999 decided I wanted a career change and started greenkeeping. I gained employment at The Hertfordshire Golf & Country Club as a trainee greenkeeper and attended Oaklands Collage 1 day a week to gain NVQ 2 qualification.

After completing the NVQ I was awarded a City & Guilds Gold Medal for my work and also won the Toro Student Greenkeeper of the Year award. The prize for this was to go to the USA and attend Massachusetts University to study, all paid for by Toro. In 2002 I moved golf clubs to become Deputy Course Manager at The Wildernesse Club in Kent, here I gained experience in managing the golf course for prestigious competitions. In 2005 I moved clubs once again, this time to become Course Manager at Frinton Golf Club and it was here that I learnt how to manage a golf course on limited resources and within strict environmental constraints. After many happy years at Frinton, in 2011 I moved once again, and hopefully for the last time in my career, to Chelmsford Golf Club.

hank you for agreeing to share your thoughts with [Essex 25 under 25]. Clearly the function of maintaining any golf course is critical to the success of a club, and to the enjoyment of those who play it. Unfortunately many see the role of the green-keeping team simply as “cutting the grass” but there is so much more to it than that. Can you tell us what a typical day involves for you and your team? We start the day by completing the course set up, this involves going around the course to ensure that it is ready for the days play. There is a lot of grass cutting to do, however there is an awful lot more work that goes on that golfers might not see, these being; - Applying plant protection products, wetting agents, fertilisers and soil amendments to maintain healthy plant growth - Servicing and repairing turfgrass machinery - Maintaining Health and Safety records - Personnel issues - Plumbing and irrigation maintenance - Course development planning and implementation - Controlling costs - Turf maintenance procedures such as aeration, scarifying, top dressing, brushing, overseeding, etc. - Tree management - Communication

 What topography, soils and sub-soils typify your course, and what are the specific challenges that they pose to you and your team? The soil that we have to deal with is typical for many Essex courses, which is a stony/clay sub-soil with a heavy clay loam above. The topography is not typical of many other Essex courses as we are blessed with some lovely hills which produce some fantastic vista views of the course itself and the surrounding area. The two challenges that soil type and topography poses is getting water away quickly during the winter months and keeping water available to the grass plants through the summer months. With the course being so hilly lower parts of the course get quite a lot of run-off water from rainfall so these areas tend to get wetter quicker and stay wet for longer periods than other parts of the course.

 What other ecology and biodiversity will a player enjoy at Chelmsford? As anybody that has played Chelmsford before can vouch we have a number of trees lining many of our holes and we have quite an extensive woodland habitat. Because of this we have a large wildlife population, both birds and animals.

 How does the course play during the more difficult periods of weather we experience in the UK – heavy rain, winter months, long dry spells? The course on the whole drains pretty quickly, so we don’t lose many, if any days from course closures.

The main problem during the winter months is managing disease pressures on the playing surfaces and controlling worm casting. Worm control will become a big problem in future years for almost every golf course as the only chemical control available is being taken off the market as it is to lose it’s EU approval fairly soon.

 What does your routine greens management regime involve such as scarifying, hollow-tining, verti-draining and top dressing? Many golfers are frustrated when the greens are being worked on – can you explain why it is necessary? At the moment we deep scarify the greens in the spring and again in the autumn, we hollow core in the autumn, we light scarify/groom once a month from May through to August and we solid tine once a month going deep early spring and late autumn. Whenever we aerate during the spring/summer/autumn we will topdress afterwards, we are aiming to dress 120 tons of sand on our greens per year. We aerate the soil for many reasons, but the main reasons are for improved drainage and to keep air space available for grass roots to grow in. If the soil was compact percolation rates would be very slow causing soft wet greens in the winter and concrete hard ones in the summer. Also, if the roots of the grass cannot grow healthily then we would lose our desirable grasses and get shallow rooting grasses and weeds growing instead.

 What grasses are used in your greens and what length of cut do you implement? Does this change throughout the year or for specific tournaments? What speeds do you achieve? The grass plant population on our greens is made up of a mixture of species, but our main species is poa annua. We are currently trying to change the population of our greens to be predominately agrostis tenius (Browntop Bent). The height of cut changes throughout the year from 5½mm in the winter to 4¼mm in the summer; this can also change depending on environmental stresses that might be around. Green speeds vary from around 7ft in the winter to 9½-10½ft in the summer, but there is such a big hang-up about green speeds in our industry; we should be concentrating on consistency and smoothness of ball roll rather than speed.

 With such an important focus now on environmental stewardship can you tell me what you are doing about sustainable methods of course management? Are you reducing fertilizer and water use? Let’s get one thing straight on sustainability; What is sustainable for Chelmsford Golf Club might not be sustainable for another golf club and vise-versa! Each golf club and their courses are different. We are always trying to lower our inputs of plant protection products, fertilisers and water and have been for many years. We need to ensure that we only apply what is absolutely necessary to help keep the grass plant healthy, this helps to keep costs to a minimum and also keeps our environmental impact to a minimum.

Some of the beautiful greens that make up Chelmsford Golf Club  Do you have any particular advice for your members or visitors as to how best to score at Chelmsford? What should they specifically avoid in your opinion?

 What training and development do you and your team benefit from? Is the focus on learning “on the job” or externally?

Chelmsford isn’t very long by today’s standards but each hole is very different and requires precise positional tee shots because you can be blocked out very easily by the numerous trees that are about.

Training is provided, both in-house and from collage/specialists. Having a fully trained greenkeeping team helps keep morale and motivation high. You are also able to keep costs down as less contractor work is needed.

 How is smart technology impacting on the job? Is it helping productivity in any way?

 What advice would you give to somebody considering a career as a green-keeper?

Turfgrass machinery innovations and technology is changing every year. Modern machinery has helped free up time so we are able to achieve higher standards without incurring higher staff costs.

Find a golf club that is willing to invest in your future via education and then repay that club by giving 110% commitment back.

 What are your other interests, and what do you enjoy outside work? The one piece of equipment that saves a mammoth amount of time for tree lined courses is the trilo leaf collectors.

 Some of the newer irrigation controllers out on the market can be controlled via the latest smart phones, this is very useful as you are able to make adjustments to cycles even if you are away from the course. Are there any plans to further invest in technology or machinery at Chelmsford over the next 12 months?

What with working as a Course Manager and having a young family, that doesn’t leave much spare time! However I enjoy playing golf and love watching football and cricket, I follow Arsenal FC and Essex CCC. I also enjoy spending quality time with my wife and children and also enjoy the odd glass of wine!

We are always looking at investing in new equipment, this helps keep repair costs to a minimum. It also increases reliability which reduces down-time of machines and helps us to stay abreast of the latest innovations.

scott’s history Scott turned professional in 2000 and completed his PGA training in December 2003. He worked as an assistant professional under Peter Taggart at Frinton Golf Club from 1996 to 2008. He has worked as a full time coach for Coastal Golf Academy since late 2008. In 2010 he became a lead coach for the County Academy Programme, which involves coaching talented juniors from around the county. He continually attends PGA seminars improving his coaching knowledge. He not only has a sound knowledge of the golf swing and short game shots but also an understanding of what is required to become mentally and physically fit for golf. Scott is also a Level 1 Qualified Plane Truth Golf Instructor. He uses the "+ and -" Impact System, which helps in understanding a players impact and ball flight. This helps when choosing which part of the swing to fix to give the most positive effect on the golfers ball flight. i Scott, thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview with us today. How long have you been a qualified PGA Professional for now and what drew you to Harwich?

 Golf is a great sport to be involved with from a young age as it teaches manners, etiquette, and good quality social skills. What age would you recommend that parents get their children started in the game?

Nine years as qualified professional, the opportunity came up to make Harwich golf club a venue for Coastal Golf Academy. It is a friendly members club and I was delighted to become part of the coaching team at Harwich.

In my opinion children can start as young as they can hold a club BUT it must be totally for fun and enjoyment with very little emphasis on technique. Fun games with a purpose will give the best chance of the child to learn to love the game and maybe one day become a champion.

 There has been, and still is, some fantastic talent floating around the Essex golf scene. Who are the better players that you have taught in the past and is there anyone you recommend we should look out for in the future? I coach the players from Colne Golf Academy, where Harwich golf club member Jordan Slater was a student. Other good players from the academy I coach include Essex ladies squad player Faye Trigg. My current role within Essex is as a lead coach for the CAP programme where I am coaching 16 girls. One of those girls called Abi Henshall from Harwich Golf Club shows real promise to become a county girls player.

 Many of the counties PGA pros still play in tournaments such as the East Region PGA events. Do you participate in such events, and if so how did you get on last year? For many years I played a full playing schedule of East Region and Essex PGA events. I currently play a very limited amount of Essex PGA events including Essex Open and Essex PGA championship. Last year’s performance in the Essex Open was very forgettable!

Scott Rusbridge  Golf is one of the most technically and mentally challenging sports, and we learn to accept a lot of ups and downs. What would you say are the highlights of your career so far, either teaching or playing? The biggest success was winning an East Region Order of Merit event back in 2004 and becoming Essex PGA Captain in 2010.

 Everyone has days where nothing is going right for them on the golf course and they feel like just giving up and walking in. What would be the best piece of advice that you could give to a golfer in this situation? In a tough situation golfers should remind themselves what brings them to the course to play golf. Part of this must be because they enjoy playing, when the going gets tough they should just remind themselves why they are playing.

 There are over 30,000 golfers in the county of all different standards and levels. Now tell us the truth, have you ever had any lessons where you’ve really had to hold the laughter in because the person was just that bad? Yes many times, strangely very successful business people tend to struggle. I have always wondered why this could be and the best answer I have is that they have been successful in their field and their expectation levels for their golf become too high. This then leads to them becoming frustrated. It could also be the fact they don’t allow enough time to practice!

 Golfers are always looking to get ahead of their competitors. Do you have anything in your arsenal of teaching methods, whether that is some new technology or general knowledge about the golf swing that is unique to you, and that you’d be willing to share with us? Last year I became qualified as a Plane Truth Golf instructor. I truly believe that the information I have gained from this is some of the best information available for coaches to learn from. I do not look to teach ‘pretty’ swings; just try to get players to understand their impact and ball flight and then makes fixes in their swing to give a desirable ball flight.

 There are so many leading golf brands on the market today that it can often get very difficult to choose which driver or which set of irons is best to buy. What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to buy a new club or a new set, and is having them custom fitted that important? Custom fitting for all keen and serious golfers is essential; always go to a golf club or fitting centre where a PGA professional can give you the best honest advice.

 Along with all the brands to choose from, there are also a lot of shops to choose to buy them from. What brands do you stock in your shop, what made you choose them, and do you have any great offers available at the moment? Although our shop is small at Harwich we offer many leading brands including Titleist, Ping and Wilson. In my opinion Titleist are the best because they are the clubs I choose to use.

ounty coaching is provided for about twelve boys from each age group from 10 to 15. The boys are selected by the county coaches who look for boys with the ability and attitude to be scratch players by the time they are sixteen years of age. Each age group has five full day sessions with the county professionals, where they are given guidance in putting, chipping, bunker play and ball control. In addition seminars are provided in a variety of subjects that go towards making a successful golfer, including, course management, diet, self discipline etc. Aspects of competitive practice feature strongly in all that we do and we hope that a mentoring scheme where a more individual approach is being introduced will pay dividends in the future.

A major aspect seemingly missing is the full swing, but it is anticipated that each will have employed a home coach that will have dealt with this for them to have attained their already high standard of golf for their age. Home coaches are very welcome to join us on coaching days to discuss progress and future development of their charges.

Creating a team spirit Obviously a major reason for establishing the county coaching squad is to build team spirit that will go towards county success for the teams when facing competition from our neighbouring counties. We achieve considerable success as a result of our programme. So a combination of a desire to win and to produce quality players by the age of sixteen is paramount in our minds.

Practice Makes Perfect Further to the Essex County Golf Coaching Scheme is the County Academy Programme. This is currently a four year series of lessons highly subsidised by England Sport via England Golf. The original concept was to target those boys and girls who couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t quite qualify for the county squads and support them in their quest to improve. In practice this has been a trifle difficult to organise and has had to be adapted to try to identify those with talent who might benefit from extra coaching. For the next two years the county has to provide 50% funding for the programme. When this period is over its future will depend on county financial contributions. The county will have to make decisions regarding the future of CAP and its full integration into the county programme will be a challenge in both

attracting finance and organisation. It is unlikely that full funding can be made available, but the obvious benefit of offering support to these youngsters cannot be ignored. The merger into one Golf Union also presents a challenge for the future in deciding the best possible path for boys and girls when considering coaching. The natural progression of this merger is to combine the coaching into ability groupings of boys and girls, possibly therefore settling into a three tier system in years to come where girls, boys and CAP blend into one programme. This is an exciting concept for the future but one that will take time and co-operation between the three groups to establish. Keith Mitchell (Chair of Essex Player Development)

ome of our countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s very best golfers who recently graced the European Tour returned to their Essex roots on Sunday March 24th to spend time among our local golfing squads. Robbie Coles, Lloyd Kennedy, Simon Khan and Matthew Southgate gave up one of their precious few days off to return to Essex and put something back into the county in which they learnt their craft.

Yet the spirits of the lads and their coaches were not dampened and the day progressed promisingly with a session where the prosâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; discussed practice, play and fitness. Questions and answers flowed freely with Matt, Simon, Robbie and Lloyd taking care to answer every question the younger boys had.

The pros hit the green One hundred and twenty Essex squad golfers aged 11 and up met at The Warren Golf Club and were treated to a very personal insight into life on tour and what it takes to get there. The young hopefuls were treated to a Q & A, and given useful tips about the variety of shot alternatives the pros employ to maintain a high standard. Unfortunately the weather was not at all kind. The days leading up to the event had been some of the warmest this year, but Sunday dawned with heavy clouds and threatening rain causing a scramble for space to eat packed lunches in the clubhouse.

To round up the day the pros hit the green for a demonstration practise round. Somehow the result failed to matter, but what did was the spirit in which the whole event was conducted and the enjoyment that everyone, including the professionals had from the day. Once again we were made extremely welcome at The Warren Golf Club. We really appreciate all that The Warren and its staff does for us, particularly on special days like this, and our thanks goes out to all the staff, as well as the pros, who together orchestrated the day so well.

hile it can be said that my skills alone are not sufficient to prop up the county, they are more than sufficient to prop up the bar. I often find, as I recline in the clubhouse, recalling vividly my time in North Africa in the summer of 1927. There was a dire lack of golfing equipment and we had to make-do with the thigh bones of an expired camel for clubs, a scone or teacake usually constituted a reasonable ball providing we could acquire one. I remember distinctly a game I had with the Baron of Romford in which we thwacked the scone and a hungry street urchin gobbled it up, so in lieu of anything else we used a stuffed partridge I had acquired in Clacton-on-Sea for a ball. It worked a treat and was such tremendous fun smacking that partridge across the desert, the Baron laughed so much he gave himself a hernia.

Needless to say, I was incredibly drunk. What was I talking about? Ah yes, I just wanted to raise a glass in toast to the County Colt’s Team ahead of their match against Hertfordshire on Sunday, 17th of June. I will be watching earnestly, from the bushes, and look forward to seeing Captain Andy May command the troops, it should be a wonderful day, assuming I don’t get any flashbacks from the war. e at The Essex Golf Union caught up with Jason Fox – Managing Director at Crondon Park Golf Club, one of Essex’s premier golf clubs, to find out about the running of the club house, and talk about the inner workings of the local golf industry and what goes on behind the scenes.

 Jason, how long have you been in your position at Crondon and what does your position entail? I have been managing director of Crondon park for 5 years and my job responsibilities cover course management, golf club management. front of house for the clubhouse and functions, kitchens, events booking and management, marketing and all related accounting. We are lucky to have great senior managers in each department dedicated to doing a fantastic job.

 Golf clubs tend to evoke a family atmosphere; do you have special facilities for children and young people? And are there any offers available to families?

We always encourage juniors to get involved in the game. On site there is a driving range for practice and lessons and a par three course for starters and short game practice. Discounts are available to couples and there are three types of junior and cadet memberships.

 I see you do weddings. To me a golf club seems quite an odd place for a wedding reception. Is it common? Do many people choose to have their wedding reception at your club, and if so what sort of things might differ from a more standard wedding reception? We do hundreds of weddings. A golf club is a perfect place for weddings as you get the beauty and peaceful setting of the course. If the club has a wedding licence then people can also get married on site so there is no need for transport in between.

 We all know a lot of business is conducted over a round of golf, in what ways do you cater especially for corporate or business clients, and what additional facilities are available for conferences and business meetings? Golf clubs are ideal for business entertainment with the facilities already

in place to suit. Crondon has a number of different rooms that can be used for private meetings to 200+ people for a conference. Items such as charts and screens are available for these types of events. Business customers can get to play golf and done in great surroundings.

 After a long game of golf, I’m sure many find themselves rather peckish. What does your club offer in the way of sustenance, do you use any home grown produce? And what is the most common drink for a player after a game?

Hiluta reigns in Spain By Rob Jarvis

ur very own Jack Hiluta from Chelmsford, Essex was born in 1989 and has been playing golf since he was 2 years old. He has just completed 4 years of NCAA Division 1 collegiate golf in the U.S.A at South Alabama University and has represented England since he was 16. His current World Amateur Ranking has just moved up to 60th after he won the Spanish Amateur Championship at the beautiful Alcanada Golf Club in Majorca in March. The tournament was held over five days- two days of stroke play qualifying rounds with the top 32 players advancing to the knockout round for the final three days. Hiluta was seeded in 9th place after shooting rounds of 73(+1) and 71(-1) and faced the number twentyfour seed Spaniard Toni Ferrer in the first round of match play, who he comfortably brushed aside with a 3&2 victory. Hiluta then went on to beat England’s Ashley Chesters and Frenchman Kenny Subregis in the 2nd and 3rd rounds respectively before facing the 8th best player in the World Amateur Rankings, Daan Huizing in the semi-final. Hiluta knew this would be a tough test but said that he just wanted to keep calm by enjoying his time on the course and relieve himself of any expectations. This certainly paid off as he managed to pull ahead of the Dutchman in the closing holes to win 2&1 and go on to face the number seven seed from Germany, Marcel Schneider in the final. The final was decided over 36 holes and just like his semi-final round Hiluta was determined to keep up the same attitude. “When it was time to hit a shot I knew I had to focus, but in between shots my caddy and I were laughing and joking with each other, and that really helped me take my mind off things and not worry about what was at stake. It allowed me to shrug off any nerves and keep myself calm and collected which turned out to be key.” Hiluta went into the break with a 2up advantage but knew it wasn’t over yet. He came out firing strong and managed to get to 3up after the 10th hole. A further win on the 14th gave him somewhat of a comfortable margin and then halving the 15th hole saw Hiluta crowned as this year’s International Spanish Amateur Champion; a title that has now been dominated by English players for the past four years. The Spanish title is Hiluta’s biggest victory of his career so far sneaking him well up the World Amateur Golf Rankings to 60th place having previously been hovering around 200th place. However, his amateur record has been far from baron. He has, at some point, held course records at 6 different venues, his deepest score being a 63(-9) at Heron Lakes Country Club in Alabama. He has represented England at under 16, under 18, and Men’s level, as well as captaining the 2007 Great Britain & Ireland winning team against Europe.

He has been a member of Team Faldo since 2006 alongside players such as Rory McIllroy, Oliver Fisher, John Parry, Ben Evans, and James Heath and actually won the Under18 Faldo Series Championship in 2007. For the past four years he’s been attending and playing golf for South Alabama University in America which is an NCAA Division 1 school; the top division for all of amateur golf in the States. He had a very successful time there which was highlighted by back to back wins in 2010 at the Memphis Intercollegiate and Mobil Intercollegiate championships. This young man has the credentials to become one of Europe’s top touring players when he eventually turns professional, but for the time being it’s just a case of “watch this space”. The New Under 14s Order of Merit Why an Order of Merit?

he concept of an Order of Merit for the U14 age group is not new, having been raised by Duncan Woolger at County Academy Programme meetings over the past two years. However the initiative to begin the Order of Merit lapsed when Mr Woolger left the programme. This year, during our coaching squad trials it became very clear that the number of local children taking up the game at younger ages had fallen. Added to that was the lack of competitive golf fixtures for, particularly the Under 12 and 13 age groups. Under 14’s are better served but all have to compete within Junior Opens where Under 18’s are in competition, often not giving the youngsters a fair chance.

Norman Garon Trust

It was decided that an evaluation of the idea should be conducted by asking local clubs if they were willing to hold U14 fixtures at less busy times in their golfing schedules. It was both surprising and extremely pleasing that the first four clubs approached offered their courses for this event with enthusiasm and no charge. A great start! Of the four clubs approached, Garon Park manager Alan Walker was most enthusiastic. Garon Park have recently earned Golf Mark status at High Achiever level and should be given a pat on the back for their encouragement of Junior Golf in the county, having increased their section from 9 to over 100 in one year. Mr Walker was instrumental in gaining the interest of the Norman Garon Trust who are now our official sponsors for the event. This scheme will give our Essex youngsters more opportunities to play competitive golf and provide valuable information to the county and its coaches. Thanks to the Norman Garon Trust we are able to offer significant prizes for both the individual matches and the winners of each age group’s Order of Merit.

ordan Wallace, only 20, is a rising county star. The top ranking Under 20’s Amateur of 2011 and 3rd overall in The Essex Order of Merit the same year, he clearly stands out as one of our brightest future stars. He has his sights firmly set on securing a U.S college scholarship which he hopes will act as a stepping stone to achieving his dream of a professional career in the game. He took time out of his busy training schedule to have a word with us, and answer some of our questions.

 Hi Jordan, thank you for taking the time to talk to us. How did last season go for you and what was your main highlight? Last season went well for me. I had a good start to the season and I was able to continue right through the year. Although I didn’t win I gave myself enough chances and hopefully will be able to this year.

 Based on your performance last season, how do you aim to better that and what are your goals for the 2012 season? To try and keep the same consistency. The scoring last year wasn’t as low as other years so playing steady golf will always keep you in contention.

country, which is great from a player’s perspective in terms of having a decent challenge. But will you start looking elsewhere for tournaments and maybe compete at a more national level? I will try and play as many English Events as possible, like The English Amateur and Brabazon Trophy, although I have also played Faldo Series in early April.

 Golf can get extremely expensive at times, what kind of support have you had growing up, do you work as well, and who is your biggest fan? My parents and grandparents have always helped me out with things like entry fees and travelling, but I have worked at Abridge Golf Club for 2 years so I’m always busy.

 You’re a member at Abridge, and previously Maylands, so I’m sure you know them very well. What do you like most about these courses and have you ever won the Club Championships? I was at Maylands since about 11/12 years old and felt the time was right just before Christmas to move to Abridge. I will always enjoy playing round Maylands because tee to green you’ve got to be straight and the greens are small. Abridge on the other hand is a lot longer than Maylands and the condition is always pretty good. I haven’t won a club championship at either Maylands or Abridge but hopefully this year will be my year.

 Essex boasts a variety of great golf courses. Other than Abridge and Maylands, what are your favourite courses to play and why? I have to say Orsett is up there. I have played very well round there recently and it’s a course I’m familiar with. The other course I enjoy playing is Thorndon Park. It’s a shame I can’t play as well round there!

 The Keating Trophy is the first tournament of the year on April 14th. Have you played in the tournament before, and if so what is your best finish and what is the aim for this year’s event? I qualified for the last 16 last year after a 3rd place qualifying finish. I got to the quarterfinals and got knocked out by County Captain Andy May, hopefully I’ll get there again this year.

 Crondon Park is the venue for the Keating, what are your thoughts on the course? Is it easy to get a score going round there? I like the course a lot. We had the Essex Amateur Championship there last year and you can get going but some of the pin positions can be nasty so hitting the right part of the green is essential.

 Essex is probably one of the most competitive counties for golf in the

 Golf is a sport that requires great skill, many find it very difficult and we all make our mistakes and hit bad shots from time to time. Can you tell us about your most embarrassing shot or moment on the golf course that you can recall? Probably back in 2010 in Spain representing Maylands in the Junior 4 nations trophy. I was one up walking down the last and I ended up snap hooking a rescue wood into a waterfall about 50 yards left of the green. It was torrential rain all day and I said my grips were too wet. We ended up losing the title by half a point!

 The Thornton Cup is the most prestigious of the knockout trophies for club teams in the county, how is the Abridge team shaping up this year and can you see your team going all the way? Abridge have got a lot of young talent and over the last year had a huge influx in members. We’ve got 3 or 4 experienced older members who really know a lot about match play. In terms of handicaps we look very good but as you know that’s not what it’s all about.
