Welcome If truth be told, my first association with golf was in the mid 1950’s when a friend told me I could earn as much as five shillings (that’s 25p for our younger readers) for one round of caddying, the same as I was earning for a whole week’s paper round! So the following week I went along to the West Essex Golf Club and got a job caddying for a member in a Thornton Cup match. That member turned out to be the very well-known Dingy Bell, and I soon became his regular caddy. I had a very enjoyable time as the regular caddy of one of the best young golfers in the club, and together we travelled all over the south of England to major clubs and tournaments. I was so inspired by these early impressions that, after spending 40 years in the property business, I sold my firm and retired early to devote more of my time to the county and the sport that I love.

During my 22 years on the Essex Golf Union, I have seen the county go from strength to strength. We have more promising new talent than ever before.

And in 2009 of course, came our first ever English County Championship win. We truly do have much to be proud of.

It is therefore my sincere pleasure to introduce you, dear reader, to the official Essex Golf Union magazine, which we hope will enable us to inspire and inform you, and whip up some Essex spirit. Within this magazine we will regularly provide top interviews and probing features on the great and good of Essex golfing past and present. We will encourage local golfers and golf enthusiasts of all ages and abilities by providing information on scholarships and coaching programmes. This, dear readers, is not my magazine, it is our magazine. You may write or email your thoughts, ideas or suggestions for articles, ensuring this is truly a community magazine.

The world has changed a lot since the days that I earned five shillings for a day of caddying. The union aims to move with the times whilst retaining our respect for the game and sense of tradition. The reason we have created this digital magazine, is to get all the information about our favourite game in our favourite county straight to you as efficiently as possible.

We hope you are proud of what we are aiming to achieve and showcase, and we urge you to spread the word! Tweet about us, post us on Facebook, or simply tell your friends when you next see them for an ale. Go forth proudly, and together, with the right amount of enthusiasm, we can make Essex the greatest golfing county in the land.

HISTORY I started greenkeeping when I was 16 at Whittington Barracks, and did five years at college, getting a City & Guilds in Botany. I became Head Greenkeeper at the age of 23 at Dudley Golf Club, and since then have held Head Greenkeeper positions all over the country, gaining a wide range of experience. I joined Forrester Park as Head Greenkeeper in April 1993 and decided to settle. I have found it the friendliest club, with the most dedicated greenkeeping staff, that I have ever worked with.

hank you for agreeing to share your thoughts with the official Essex Golf Union magazine. Clearly the function of maintaining any golf course is critical to the success of a club, and to the enjoyment of those who play it. Unfortunately many see the role of the green-keeping team simply as “cutting the grass” but there is so much more to it than that. Can you tell us what a typical day involves for you and your team?

We arrive in the mornings in the summer around 6am. The first job every day is to check the machines, followed by mowing the greens and raking bunkers. We then check the ponds around the course and maintain fairways and raking the bunkers. We go over to the reservoir to check the pump house and do general maintenance around the golf course and clubhouse, including the tennis courts. At the end of our day we meet up for a chat over a coffee or beer – often accompanied by a Full English or even ‘Roland’s Brunch’ off the clubhouse menu.

There are other works that a head green keeper gets involved in from meetings to planning works for the following week to the following 6 months and any major works that can disrupt our members and paying guests as it has an effect on them the most.

P What topography, soils and sub-soils typify your course, and what are the specific challenges that they pose you and your team?

P How does the course play during the more difficult periods of weather we experience in the UK – heavy rain, winter months, long dry spells?

We are a clay-based course so we mole-plough and verti-drain every year. Fairways are verti-drained once a year to a depth of 10 inches and we spend two weeks in December mole-ploughing the whole course, the idea being to remove surface water as quickly as possible.

We are a course that we feel should be open to members 12 months of the year, which is why we do so much drainage work to the land.

P What ecology and biodiversity will a player enjoy at Forrester Park?

At the moment we have one of the largest stands of elms still in existence in Essex. We have many old field hedges that have been allowed to grow since the 30s which consist of oak, hawthorn, blackthorn, field maple and ash. Over the years we have planted cherry, lime, bullus plum, willow, a few memorial plane trees and we still have a number of Lombardy and Matchstick poplars which are a hangover from the orchards.

P What does your routine greens management regime involve such as scarifying, hollow-tining, verti-draining and top dressing? Many golfers are frustrated when the greens are being worked on – can you explain why it is necessary?

It is necessary to have greens of the highest standard and allow roots to go down deeply to prevent disease and remove surface water. The greens get pencil-tined from April to October, and from November to April they are verti-drained with half-inch tines set 10 inches deep.

P Do you have any particular advice for your members or visitors as to how best to score at Forrester Park?

What should they specifically avoid in your opinion?

Being a parkland course there isn’t much forgiveness when driving as the trees are now established and you can be blocked out. When you get to ‘Amen Corner’, as we call it, from the 10th to the 13th, that can destroy your card completely.

P What grasses are used in your greens and what length of cut do you implement? Does this change throughout the year or for specific tournaments? What speeds do you achieve?

The seed I use in the greens is Fescue and Bents and every other year I overseed with straight Bents. We try to remove as much Poa as we can.

Our greens at the moment are running at around 10.8. In the summer we achieve around 11.5. Length of cut is 4mm in the summer, 5mm in the winter.

P With such an important focus now on environmental stewardship can you tell me what you are doing about sustainable methods of course management? Are you reducing fertilizer and water use?

I decided a long time ago that it is more beneficial to spray feed to the greens than having fertilizer sitting on the greens when you tend, at times, to pick it up.

P Are there any plans to further invest in technology or machinery at Forrester Park over the next 12 months?

The technology has altered dramatically since I started at 16 with the old hand-mowing with Auto Certes! Now we use triple machines for cutting greens which is labour-saving, but I feel at times that cutting by hand on special days is a nice idea.

P What training and development do you and your team benefit from? Is the focus on learning “on the job” or externally?

The training is done on-site where we spend time going over machines and what to do and not to do.

P What advice would you give to somebody considering a career as a green-keeper?

It’s a rewarding job if you don’t mind the early mornings and late finishes and plenty of fresh air in all weathers.

P Lastly, what are your other interests, and what do you enjoy outside work?

I spend more time at work than I do at home as I enjoy what I do, any time of the day. If I have time, I do like to fish and play golf!

Why I use...

Titleist 913 D3. 9.5 Degree Loft. Project X 6.5 shaft.

My driving is the most solid part of my game, I love hitting drivers on tight holes and really try to utilise my ability to find the fairways with my longest club. I have used a 905R Titleist driver during my whole amateur career, it was by far the best club in the bag and famous on the amateur scene and even named ‘Johnny Parrot’ due to the colourful parrot head cover I had. Other players would say ‘forget how the crow flies, nothing flies straighter than JP’. However after several years of service, JP decided to retire at the end of 2011 (the face cracked). The staff at Titleist had a serious job on their hands.

They analysed JP and recreated me my current driver which is like a modern, new and improved JP. The weight is identical, the length is millimetre perfect, and the shaft is a perfect match as well. The staff at Titleist saved my accurate driving with the efforts they put in to building the new 913 D3 driver for me and I love every aspect from the feel to the sound of Titleist’s most modern technology.

Titleist 910 FD 3 Wood. 13.5 Degrees Loft I carry the 910 FD 3 Wood with 13.5 degrees of loft. It has a pro launch ‘x flex’ shaft in it. For years I struggled to find a 3 wood that I was confident with from both the tee and the fairway, however the 910FD is designed to be like a mini driver. FD stands for fairway driver and I find it very suitable for me to hit from a tee peg and for long approaches to the long challenging par 5s on the tour courses. The technology of the Titleist fairway woods is rated and recognised by hundreds of tour players worldwide and the performance of this club can be clearly seen especially in the hands of world number 1 Rory McIlroy.

Titleist 910 H. 19 Degrees Loft I carry the Titleist 910H in my bag with 19 degrees of loft and the project X shaft. During my amateur career I always carried a 2 iron, playing links courses nearly every week, the 2 iron was most suitable when playing on hard fast running courses and great in the wind.

However as soon as I turned pro and was playing longer and softer parkland courses, it became clear that the 2 iron was too hard for me to use to my advantage and the Titleist 910 Hybrid has been superb for me on the courses I am currently playing.

Titleist 712CB Irons, Dynamic Gold s300 Shafts, Golf Pride Midsize Grips As an amateur I played with bladed clubs. Playing off super tight lies on the links courses I found the bladed clubs offered me superb control in the wind and gave me the best distance control and consistency with my ball striking. Again when I turned pro this changed, I found that the slightly wider sole on the cavity back irons gave me all the attributes the blades did on tight lies on the parkland courses with softer more spongey fairways. I find the design of the CB irons very slick and great to look down at. They have great feel and sound through impact and are very well designed golf clubs.

Wedges, Titleist Bob Vokey Design. 54 Degrees and 58 Degrees These clubs have been in my bag for the longest. I never change lofts, I never change design. The entire time I have played golf full time I have always stood by the Bob Vokey designed wedges. In my opinion the groove technology, the spin milled face, and the shape of the head are better than any other wedge on the market. The Vokey wedge for me is versatile and elegant, its performance around the greens and for bunker play and pitching are outstanding. It’s a part of the game where I have never questioned my equipment, I would recommend the Titleist Vokey wedge to any player of any standard.

The short game in my mind is the most important part of golf and the equipment a player chooses is vital.

FootJoy StaSof Glove I use the FootJoy StaSof glove. I love the classic design of this glove.

The quality of leather used for the StaSof is superb and very comfy.

I also carry the FootJoy rain gloves for bad wet weather.

Scotty Cameron Milled Face Putters I have never stuck with the same putter for more than a few weeks! I am a ‘feel’ putter and I am always switching and changing between mallets blades and even belly putters. I think the problem that causes my indecisiveness with putters is that Scotty Cameron designs so many good ones! It is incredible that anything from the Santa Fe of the 90s to the modern day fast and squareback putters all just look great. The new Scotty Cameron milled face putters seem to perform the best for me. With a sexy black head and deep milled face, the putters I use all just look and feel amazing.

Titleist 2012 Pro V1 Golf Balls I use the Titleist 2012 Pro V1 and have done for years. I’ve always upgraded to the latest ProV1 that Titleist have on the market and I just love the performance, The ProV1x would probably help me get some more distance but I choose the ProV1 for its superb control and feel on and around the greens. The soft feel for putting is nice and the extra spin for short pitching and chipping is unbeatable.

June 30th - Issue 11 How to hit the ball further Who doesn’t want to hit it further?! Whether you need to be able to get over the lake at the 6th, reach more greens in regulation or have bragging rights in the clubhouse, this issue will address all the factors affecting distance.

July 30th - Issue 12 Fixing common faults Just in case your season isn’t completely going to plan, this issue will help you to improve your strike, fix your ball flight and get you back to winning ways.

Busting common golfing myths STEVEN PALMER’S HISTORY Steven Palmer was 8 years old when he first started playing golf, introduced to the sport by his father at a local pitch and putt course. He began coaching from the age of 17 and at 20 he was coaching at the UK Golf Academy at Epping Golf Range. In 2006 he made the move to West Essex Golf Club and found a great mentor in Robert Joyce who has coached some of the best players in Europe like Bernhard Langer, Mark Davis, and Simon Khan. Steven has recently formed the Palmer Williams Golf Academy at Los Arqueros Golf & Country Club just outside Marbella, Spain with fellow PGA professional Daniel Williams. Steven is currently a coach to some of the top county amateurs and professionals and is a specialist for golfers with injuries and disabilities. His coaching philosophy is to help all his students improve technically, mentally and physically, ensuring that his students improve at a maximised rate. We are proud to have Steven sharing his instruction with us and hope you find his 12 step development program that is going to be featured in here over the next 12 months, of huge value to you.

Hi Guys and Girls, I hope by now you’re all enjoying better putting and short games from the advice in the previous two editions. Starting from the smallest swings and building up to the bigger ones is a great way to easily learn correct, consistent technique as opposed to diving straight into the big swings.

This session is designed to help clear your mind of all the bad advice that is far too often passed on from golfer to golfer. I’m going to address the most common golfing myths and also give you a better thought for each that will help you play better golf, and maybe help you pass on better advice yourselves!

Ô Myth 1 – You must keep your head down I thought I’d start with my favourite piece of bad advice. I say favourite with a sarcastic tone; it makes me cringe when I hear people saying this to their kids, partners and fellow players.

During the golf swing, from impact to finish, every good golfer will stand up to a degree to allow themselves to freely rotate into a full finish. This standing up action, coupled with a terrible shot, for some reason causes onlookers to jump up and say, “You lifted your head, keep your head down!”

The truth is, most good players do keep their heads down through impact. There are, however, some that do not, and have had very successful playing careers not looking at the ball at impact. Once the club is approaching impact, with the velocity and weight of the clubhead, there’s really very little a player can do to alter its path towards the ball regardless of whether they look away or not.

:: Why is it such bad advice?

There are so many residual problems associated with a player trying to keep their head down. These are the main ones: Poor body movement When a player thinks about keeping their head down, the first thing that usually happens is they don’t rotate into a full finish. This means the brakes are being applied before impact, costing the player a lot of clubhead speed.

Also, when the player thinks about keeping their head still, everything else also stays still! This means very little body rotation and weight shift during the swing, costing the player their clubhead speed and quality of strike.

Neck, shoulder and elbow injuries The average golfer swings their clubhead at somewhere around 80mph. If a player restricts the natural rotation of their head into their finish, they are effectively wringing their own neck! The force of the body rotating against a still head at this speed puts tremendous strain on the joints and muscles in the neck. For those golfers who are trying to keep their head down to the extent that their body isn’t rotating properly, this stress occurs at the shoulders and the elbows.

:: A better swing thought…

TAKE A DIVOT AFTER THE BALL

Next time you play, rather than trying to keep your head down, focus on taking a slight divot after the ball instead. If you take a slight divot after the ball, you have stayed down plenty long enough. Not only this, taking a slight divot after the ball promotes good weight transfer onto the forward foot in the finish, better body rotation, a well-timed release of the club and allround better ball striking.

24 GOLF TUTORIALS STEVEN PALMER Ô Myth 2 – You must swing slowly This is my other main peeve. I see too many players patting their drivers 140 yards down the driving range with lazy, uncommitted swings. This advice is largely born from golfers watching the best players in the world on TV. The best players have such efficient movement that it makes them look like they’re staying very still and swinging slowly, but in reality, the likes of Rory McIlroy and Luke Donald are swinging their club at over 110mph.

:: Why is it such bad advice?

Ultimately, speed equals distance, and I’ve never come across a golfer who hits it “too far”! The slower you swing, the shorter you’ll hit it!

Not only this, a player who swings slowly will never learn to produce efficient, athletic movement. When the swing becomes too slow and lazy, poor strikes are also magnified as the ball offers more resistance against the clubhead at impact.

:: A better swing thought…

PRACTICE THE “SWING FAST” DRILL

Swing fast, but stay loose and in balance. Make some practice swings holding the clubhead end of the club. You’ll notice the “swoosh” sound as the grip of the club cuts through the air. Make some practice swings trying to make this sound as loud as possible whilst keeping your body fairly relaxed and allowing it to move and rotate freely. Now, grip the club the correct way around and try to replicate this sound. The aim here is to swing the club as fast as possible without tensing up or losing your balance. When you get good at this in practice swings, and are able to graze the ground with the clubhead at the same point every time, transfer this into some real shots. Your body movement, distance and quality of strike will be much better after only a little practice.

:: BEFORE WE CONTINUE… I feel I must say this to all the parents and grandparents out there who are starting their children and grandchildren: NEVER TELL YOUR CHILD TO KEEP THEIR HEAD DOWN OR SWING SLOWLY!!! One of the reasons it’s so good for golfers to start playing at a young age is that they have no brute strength to “muscle” the ball down the fairway. Kids are forced to generate their speed through athletic movement, which their flexible, elastic bodies can learn very easily. If you tell your child to keep their head down and swing slow, you will make it extremely likely that they will grow up to be very short hitters of the golf ball, by which time it will be very difficult for them to learn to generate clubhead speed efficiently.

Teach your child in much the same way…allow them to swing as fast as they like, as long as they maintain their balance. As they grow up, their athletic movement and golf-specific strength and stability will be far superior to anyone who tried to swing slowly as a child.

Ô Myth 3 – The hands should be pushed ahead of the ball in the setup This is mainly a short game issue, but also applies to the full swing. I often see players pushing their hands unnaturally towards the target in their setup because they’ve heard that the hands need to be ahead of the ball.

:: Why is it such bad advice?

Two reasons: 1. When the hands are pushed towards the target ahead of the ball, they are usually in an unnatural position relative to the body. This means that, before the swing even starts, the arms and body are disconnected and not working in unison, making it very difficult to create a consistently effective action.

2. When the hands are too far ahead of the ball, it takes the natural loft (the upward angle of the clubface) and bounce (the back edge of the club which causes it to slide in the turf, not dig in) off the club, which now means that the club is not going to be able to work as it was designed to. The ball will tend to fly too low and the clubhead will tend to dig into the turf, greatly reducing the player’s margin for error.

:: A better swing thought…

Allow your hands to hang naturally opposite the centre line of your body in your setup. You will find that, if your body is positioned correctly for each shot, your hands will be slightly ahead of the ball on short shots, slightly behind the ball with your driver, and in line to slightly in front with your irons. If this is not the case, you need to reposition your whole body, not just your hands.

Ô Myth 4 – You must “sweep” your fairway woods Whilst there is certainly less ground contact and a shallower angle of approach for the fairway woods compared to the irons, this term is not technically correct and very misleading.

:: Why is it such bad advice?

When the ball sits on the ground, even if you have a very good lie, it doesn’t sit right on top of the grass. The weight of the ball will always cause it to sit somewhat in the grass. A well-struck shot comes out of the middle of the clubface. You can see that, in the picture on the right, the ball being struck from the centre of the face means that the sole of the club is very slightly below the bottom of the ball.

So, if the sole of the club is below the bottom of the ball on a well-struck shot, and the bottom of the ball is below the top level of the grass, it means that to strike a fairway wood as well as possible, part of the sole needs to be cutting through the turf through impact, meaning there needs to be a very slight divot after the ball. This means that those players trying to sweep the ball off the top of the grass with their fairway woods will hit it thin at best, and top it at worst.

:: A better swing thought…

Much like the “keep your head down” alternative, try to take a “very slight” divot after the ball. The emphasis with the fairway woods here are the words “very slight”. A well-struck fairway wood from a good lie will only result in a slight grazing of the turf after impact. This will ensure that you are getting the entire ball when you hit your fairway woods, not just thinning it off the top of the turf.

I hope that’s helped to clear your mind of some of the main misconceptions in golf. Maybe between us we can start passing on some better advice and help more people play their best!

Craig Lockwood Forrester Park CRAIG’S HISTORY I have been a Golf Professional for seven years. I have a huge passion for the game of golf as it has been a part of my life since the age of 4.

I have had a very exciting amateur career which has seen me playing in county, national and international competitions. I knew it was the right time for me to enter the professional ranks at the age of 19. It was at this point that I chose to acquire a degree in Professional Golf at Birmingham University, which gave me my P.G.A teaching Qualifications.

I have since played on the Jamega, Euro Pro and the P.G.A Regional Events, in which I won the Assistant Order of Merit in 2010.

I am currently the Head Professional and Manager of Golf at Forrester Park Golf and Country Club based in Great Totham, Near Maldon, Essex. It is here that I am lucky enough to work with all abilities from the complete beginner to the advanced player.

Ô Hi Craig, thank you very much for taking the time to do this interview with me today. How long have you been a qualified PGA Professional for now and what drew you to Forrester Park?

I have been P.G.A qualified for 2 years and have been a professional for 7 years. Forrester Park is a friendly environment to work in with all members making you feel welcome. Accompanied by an ever growing reputation and high standards keeps me happy to be a part of it.

Ô There has been, and still is, some fantastic talent floating around the Essex golf scene. Who are the better players that you have taught in the past and is there anyone you recommend we should look out for in the future either at your club or within the county?

Much of my work is based at grass roots level with many juniors and beginners. I teach in six schools within which all of the children are progressing well. My main goal is to see as many children involved in the sport as possible. Many of my friends still compete at professional level and many of them will soon be in contention on worldwide tours.

Ô Golf is a great sport to be involved with from a young age as it teaches us manners, etiquette, and good quality social skills. What age would you recommend that parents get their children started in the game?

As I mentioned above, much of my coaching revolves around the development of children’s coaching. If a child enjoys the game they are more than welcome to take part in my coaching sessions. I would advise that they are in at least reception or year one at school.

Ô We have asked you about the youth so as expected; our county seniors are a very important part of the food chain! Are there any ‘characters’ that deserve a special mention for their game or just general presence around the club?

A huge part of the club here at Forrester Park is the Vets Section. Each week on average 80 Vets compete and play on Wednesday. I couldn’t possibly single anyone out in particular as they are all a great group and I would like to say thank you to them all for supporting me over my first 18 months here.

Ô Many of the counties PGA pros still play in tournaments such as the East Region PGA events. Do you participate in such events, and if so how did you get on last year?

I still do compete in the order of merit events and pro ams, however this season I wasn’t able to play regularly due to work commitments. I will be back out to compete next season.

Ô Everyone has days where nothing is going right for them on the golf course and they feel like just giving up and walking in. What would be the best piece of advice that you could give to a golfer in this situation?

Never walk off the golf course and give in, always carry on no matter what. Everyone has been in the situation when their game isn’t firing on all cylinders and N/R is on the cards, but once you have non returned the next hole is always great. Why? The reason for this is you are no longer trying so hard and you are relaxed and almost have an “I don’t care” attitude. Well it is this relaxed state of mind that is going to help you. Never try too hard. Or if your game is really suffering, contact me for a lesson.

Ô Golfers are always looking to get ahead of their competitors. Do you have anything in your arsenal of teaching methods, whether that is some new technology or general knowledge about the golf swing that is unique to you, and that you’d be willing to share with us?

Many people are in search of improving and gaining that vital edge. Whether it is playing for the coffees on a Saturday morning or competing in national competitions. I believe that many amateurs do not give enough practice time to vital areas of the game. The short game covers more than 60 percent of the game and putting roughly 45% of the game. I’ll ask you the question… how many of you dedicate 35 minutes to putting in an hour’s practice session? Probably not many, but the majority of your time is taken up booming drives. Practice correctly.

Ô There are so many leading golf brands on the market today that it can often get very difficult to choose which driver or which set of irons is best to buy. What piece of advice would you give to someone looking to buy a new club or a new set, and is having them custom fitted that important?

I would always say that custom fitting is really important for all aspects of the game. Many of the heads are similar in what they do, however the brand type is what best suits your eye. I personally feel that the shaft type and lie of the club are very important to ensure solid strikes.

Ô Who are your biggest influences in golf, who inspires you and why?

I must admit despite all the talk of what has happened with Tiger Woods over the last couple of years, when I was growing up Tiger was a huge part of why I continued playing this game. Pushing his off the course antics aside, he has inspired many people to play the game and helped moved the game forwards to what it is now.

Ô A lot has been made recently of ‘belly putters’ what are your thoughts? OK or KO? Golf is one of the hardest games there is to play, anything that makes it slightly easier is o’kay with me. I personally don’t see any reason why they should be banned, especially as many of the players that are either on tour or breaking onto the tour have only ever used belly putters. I am not sure how the R and A and USGA can now make such a drastic change to the rules.

Ô There are over 30,000 golfers in the county of all different standards and levels. Now tell us the truth, have you ever had any lessons where you’ve really had to hold the laughter in because the person was just that bad?

Although I have had a few laughable moments during lessons, I have never laugh at anyone during a lesson as everyone has to start somewhere.

Readers who have been following this series will know that chi-power GOLF takes its inspiration from the art of Tai Chi, which is becoming ever more popular as a way to help golfers play their best. The recent Annual Review of Golf Coaching – “a peerreviewed publication designed to bridge the gap between scientific and practical knowledge in golf “contains a number of articles in relation to this ancient art and how it serves to improve performance in golf.

Peter Lightbrown, author of “The Fairway Within” is a British golf coach now living and teaching in Sydney, Australia. He writes in the Annual Review of a number of alternative methods used in his approach to golf coaching including Tai Chi, Zen, the Alexander Technique and Yoga.

Of Tai Chi he writes: “Tai Chi is often referred to as a moving meditation and I feel golf can be seen in the same light. A sport with a static ball lends itself to a meditative approach…Tai Chi helped me understand the vital role of the centre of the body and how we can use breathing to help connect us with our centre.

I was also influenced by the practise in Tai Chi of learning the sequence of movements first and then performing it without thinking about how. This is very important in a golf swing, because the main problem is over-trying or over-thinking which gets us in a cycle of tension and self-doubt. Learning the movement slowly and then teaching the body to act unselfconsciously provides a great antidote, and this became a crucial part of my approach to teaching the swing”.

As a Tai Chi practitioner and professional coach for the past 25 years I wholeheartedly agree! Tai Chi teaches the fundamentals of effective motion, which begin with good posture, balance and relaxation, coupled with an internal focus on the body’s centre of gravity (the t’an tien or navel area) which allows for deep and rhythmical breathing.

The difference this awareness can create in your golf swing and general performance around the course is subtle but immensely powerful.

It’s easy to get caught-up in the consensus approach to golf improvement (swing ‘tips and tricks’ and psychology) but while Tai Chi-based coaching may not yet be an industry standard method, it does offer proven ways to enhance the mind~body connection for more consistent ball striking and the ability to maintain your performance when under pressure.

Tai Chi golf-specific coaching offers you a simple and direct way to make lasting improvements as it develops both your mental game and improves your biomechanics, by inducing a state of relaxed concentration (commonly known as ‘the zone’) and with it, your ability to produce a more consistent swing.

Let’s look now at some fundamental principles of Tai Chi proffered through chi-power GOLF and how they can improve your shot preparation and address position, helping you relax under pressure and build a solid place to swing from.

At Address 1. Empty your chest: emptying or hollowing the chest is the

first key to developing better balance at address, as it relaxes the upper body, freeing the neck, releasing the shoulders and emptying the lungs – you’ll find that exhaling deeply is a natural part of this process which releases pent up energy and tension.

2. Breathe into your navel: lowering your centre of awareness, by

concentrating your mind at the navel (t’an tien), is a key focus in T’ai Chi and extremely useful for your golf. As you gently focus on your navel, you will find that you start to breathe more deeply and this in turn sends increased oxygen along with your ‘feel-good’ chemical signals (endorphins) to your brain, helping you to relax and clear your mind of mental interference.

3. Sink into the feet: Eastern philosophy tells us that your energy

(Chi) follows your thinking, so if you focus on your feet you will feel more stable and rooted. Oftentimes when coaching a client, I ask them if they feel balanced while addressing the ball and then give them a little nudge in the sternum, only to watch them fall backwards into the driving bay!

With just a few moments practising this set-up drill – empty the chest, mind at the navel, sink into the feet – it becomes impossible for me to uproot them from their stance, which just shows how much more balanced and athletic they are…which in turn accounts for the longer, straighter drives they hit!

Awareness of breathing during your swing Focus on breathing-in while you take the club away and move into position at the top of your backswing…then breathe out as you hit down and through the ball at impact. This breathing drill echoes that of Tai Chi where exhaling as the technique is applied delivers 20% more energy through the target!

52 COUNTY NEWS UNDER 12’S ESSEX V SURREY

UNDER 12’s ESSEX v SURREY Bramley Golf Club 14th October 2012

The match was held at Bramley Golf Club in Guilford, a lovely course set amongst the rolling hills of Surrey.

The format of the day was four ball better ball with one point being awarded for front and back nine and 2 points for an overall win, giving a potential total of 4 points.

We started the day one down due to a wrist injury to Michael Gilbert but the Surrey manager Steve McNeil lent us one of the Surrey boys to make up the numbers.

The boys all took the match in their stride, showing no outward sign of nerves and all having good drives off the 1st tee. Callum Newton played with the guest partner Lorenzo Horwitz with whom he dovetailed very well and combined they were one over par, winning both nines and the match 4 & 3, giving us our only win – well done. Callum for 15 holes was only 4 over par. Harrison Rackliff and Harry Robson secured a half on the front 9 but lost the back and the match.

Overall the boys handled the day well with nearly all of them improving their scores on the back nine, suggesting that once they had overcome the effects of travelling and some over-excitement, they settled down very well.

Special mention must go to James Styles (only 10 years old and the youngest player) who played a very mature and controlled game with Harry Noakes who lost the front 9 but won the back 9 and halved their match. This was a game of tenacity with neither boy giving up. This was our “Ryder Cup” match!

Overall the boys showed a lack of knowledge on the greens re ball marking, order of play and walking / talking in front of boys yet to play, along with a constant desire to use lob / 56 degree wedges from the wrong places.

The match result was Essex 5pts – Surrey 27pts

53 UNDER 13’S MATCH VS SURREY COUNTY NEWS

UNDER 13’s ESSEX v SURREY South Essex Golf Club 23rd August 2012

This is the only match the Essex under 13 team play, and could not be against any tougher opposition. With handicaps a good five shots better than the Essex boys and considerable experience in playing a U13 County level, Surrey were the favourites from the start.

The format of the match, however, did give Essex a chance to gain some points and after a front nine disaster which saw Essex only gain half a point the back nine saw some spirited golf from the team where the boys gained 7 points. Unfortunately this was not enough in any shape or form and the County lost 24 ½ points to 7 ½ .

England Golf South East Colts League Final ESSEX v HAMPSHIRE IOW & CI Royal Blackheath GC - October 14th 2012

On a bright but exceedingly cold October morning the EG South East Group Final was underway at Royal Blackheath GC between Essex and Hampshire.

With both sides having had convincing wins in the league phase of the Competition, the final was set to be a tough affair.

The morning foursomes began well for Hampshire who quickly went up in three of the matches, with the fourth being all square. As the morning wore on into the back nine a glimmer of hope appeared, but then Wallace & Evans lost their match 4&3 and we were again on the back foot. Finally some good news - Keeble & Slater halved their match against the strong pairing of Ellis & Crenan. This was quickly followed by the Chelmsford pair of Allan & Plumb recording a 2up win. All eyes were

then upon Francis & David who were having a tough time at the back, however another strong finish resulted in a halved match to give Essex the extra half they needed to finish the morning all square at 2 points each.

This made lunch all the more palatable, and a little re-jigging of the afternoon order was made.

Like the morning, the singles matches did not start favourably for Essex with more downs than ups, the exception being Evans and Francis who were 4 up & 3 up respectively at the turn. Keeble was having a tough time against Ellis and the remaining five matches were between 3 down and all square. Things were not looking good.

The back nine again seemed to favour Essex. News came in that Francis had finished his match early with a 6&5 win. This was marred by Keeble losing 3&2, but seemed to spur on the others to the degree that the remaining games all went to the 17th or 18th hole. Evans & Slater bought in wins of 3&1 and 2&1 respectively Giving Essex 3 points - only another 1 ½ required. At that point we were down in two and up in one.

Wallace and Allan both came to the 18th with their matches all square and both halved the final hole to give Essex a total to date of 4 points.

The Cup now was not lost but not yet won.

Plumb narrowly lost on the 17th and all attention once again turned to David, one up after the 16th, indifferent tee shots by both men at the 17th and a missed putt put the match at all square.

Layup tee shots at the short dog-leg 18th kept the drama alive. Neither approach shots were in give-able positions and 2 putts each halved the hole giving Essex the half they needed to win the match 6 ½ to 5 ½.

Team Captain, Jordan Wallace, made a good acceptance speech as he received the Trophy from David Parrett, Chairman of the South East Group.

First We Take Romford, Then We Take The World: President Mike Spall talks us through the Proud History of The Essex Golf Union

I

t was on a blustery late February day in 1924 that amateur golfers from Woodford to Wanstead, from Ilford to Boyce Hill, mustered their forces at Romford Golf Club united in the sole aim of promoting and developing amateur golf in their county. Representatives from no less than sixteen clubs gathered here on this historic day, and, after several ales, The Essex Golf Union was born.

Under the watchful eye of First President of The Union and Captain of Wanstead Golf Club, J. J. Esplen, the members set about arranging a competition. The first arranged by the Union was a 36 holes medal, which became the Essex Amateur Championship, and was open to members of all Essex Clubs with a handicap of 12 or under. In 1924 Mr.C.Law (club unknown) was the first ever Essex Amateur Champion.

The Championship continued to be played over 36 holes until 1955 when it was expanded to its current format of 72 holes.

Early Minutes of the Union Committee Meetings reveal that

a number of notable people including Sir Winston Churchill, T. A. Torrance (Captain Walker Cup Team), Bernard Darwin and the Lord Chief Justice were all invited to the Union’s Annual Dinners on various occasions. We can only assume Churchill himself was more interested in the ale than the golf, given he once described his experience of playing the game as “Like chasing a quinine pill around a cow pasture.”

The Essex Golf Union has gone from strength to strength over the years, never faltering in its aim to promote, encourage and inspire Essex amateur golfers. The creation of many more competitions and trophies is testament to this- The Veterans Trophy (Est. 1927), The Boys Championship (Est. 1932), and The Youth Shield (Est. 1951) to name but a few.

This patronage and local encouragement has led to notable successes with Essex at a national level.

62 ESSEX GOLF UNION HISTORY Throughout the years we have produced many outstanding players.

In the 1950/60’s there was Ken Budd of West Essex and Sir Michael Bonallack of Thorpe Hall. The record of Sir Michael was quite outstanding and he was perhaps the greatest amateur of modern times winning the Essex County Championship 9 times from 1954, and a multitude of regional and national accolades culminating in his tenure as President of the English Golf Union and rightfully inducted into The World Golf Hall of Fame in 2001.

In recent years we have continued to help, encourage and develop many golfers that have fared well both in amateur ranks and, later, professionally. (See Subsection 2. Current Successful Players) In line with its objectives, The Essex Golf Union is proud to promote Golf at its highest level. We currently run Teams at under 14, under 16, under 18, colts (under 21), full County Team and Seniors (over 55’s.) In addition we have a wide range of coaching programmes to suit all levels, ages and abilities. We also arrange a number of County Competitions, including The Keating Trophy, The Cliffords Trophy and The Chigwel Bowl, and organise various Club Team Events. (See Subsection 3. Tournaments) With an extremely talented team and incredible amounts of dedication and hard work, golf in our county has gone from strength to strength, and in 2009 we saw the most well deserved success when we were crowned the English County Champions for the first time. Though we have a long and distinguished history, there has never been a more promising and exciting time in Essex Golf, and in conjunction with our global media partners Think Sports Media Ltd, we are putting every resource into ensuring further success in the future.

Notable county firsts 1971- For the first time since the competition was inaugurated in 1928 the Essex County Team gained first place in the S.E. Group qualifying competition for the English County Championship, defeating Surrey,

Sussex, Hampshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk, Middlesex, Kent and B.B. & O. in a tremendously exciting finish at Northwood G. C. on 31st July 1971. In the final Staffordshire only narrowly beat Essex.

1997 – For the second time in its history the County team gained first place in the S.E group qualifying competition for the English County Championship.

1997 – For the first time in the history of ECAGU the boys won the English Boys County Championship. The Boys Team also won the S.E. Foursomes Championship.

2009

– For the first time in our history the County Team won the English Men’s County Championship. The Team was Matt Southgate, Jack Winer, James Webber, Andy Shakespeare, Ross Dee, Ross Spurgeon and Jay Beiser. In addition Dale Whitnell played in the qualifying event but had turned professional before the final.

Current success Notable examples are the Walker Cup Players Richard McEvoy, Oliver Fisher and Dale Whitnell. We currently have Simon Khan, Lloyd Kennedy, Richard McEvoy, Matt Southgate , Oliver Fisher and Robbie Coles on the European Tour, Dale Whitnell and Dan Brooks on the Challenge Tour and many promising players who are progressing through the lower ranked professional tours. In addition we have Geoff King of West Essex who won the English Seniors Championship and who represents England Internationally, Jack Heasman who has represented England at Junior level and Jack Hiluta who has also represented England.

Club Team events – The Thorton Cup, an interclub knockout played off scratch. There is also the Leslie Wood Trophy an interclub knockout for players with handicaps of 7.5 or over, The Seniors Knockout for players over the age of 55, the Youth Sheild – a competition for under 18’s, the initial rounds of which are played on a zonal basis, the Norman Plum Trophy – a knockout competition for category 3 and 4 players. The Essex Match Play Championship (Allan Lockwood Trophy) a knockout competition which is open to players over 18 with a handicap of less than 28 and is played off handicap. We also run The Essex Foursomes Championships and the Boys Foursomes Championship which are played off scratch, and not forgetting the Mullis Foursomes which is open to all handicaps.

I am remaining amateur for the time being, with the dream to maybe play Walker Cup next year.

I will keep working hard on my game and my fitness in order to play at the highest amateur level and gain some experience before turning professional

I would like to be a successful world touring professional and be affiliated with both the European and US PGA tours
