ARCHITECTURE
CONSTRUYENDO UNA PRACTICA Each year, UNAM’s (Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México) Facultad de Arquitectura chooses a renowned architect to teach a special lecture series for a semester and to create an exhibit to display their work throughout the year. The theme around JSª’s lecture series was on how to build a studio. Within that theme we designed an exhibit that explained how throughout 20 years of practice, a single studio can affect the urban environment of Mexico City. The breadth of the projects were displayed in numerous forms to help immerse visitors in the history of JSª and the growth of Mexico City.

1 | Due to the size of the exhibit hall, we wanted to create smaller spaces within it. We did this by dividing the space up with scaffolding and walls. This allowed us to curate each area differently. 2 | Our scaffolding design was essential in creating modular stands that were able to shrink or grow depending on what was being displayed. 3 | The design not only creates different areas and organizes the circulation of the visitors, but it also gives the appearance of a faux roof which helped with the extreme height of the space.

For the exhibit, a large variety of printed material had to be designed – poster, pamphlet, map, etc. Each one held an important piece of information that was linked back to the exhibit and the lecture series.
ARCHITECTURE
CASA HOLBOX Our client wanted a peaceful and natural escape to focus on their writing on the island of Holbox in the Yucatรกn Peninsula. This area, known for its limestone and mangrove trees, has a very small population, with most residents visiting only a few times a year. We wanted a space that could open up completely to the view of the ocean, but also be able to close itself off from storms and unwanted guests when the client was absent.
1 | The curved design of the home and its pivoting doors allows the client to have a perfectly framed view of the ocean from any room. 2 | Having the home floating was not only a way to protect the home from high tide or strong storms, but it also gave the home a light and airy sensation as well as providing a place to keep the water heater and other utilities.

BOSQUE CASETAS Bosque Chapultepec, Mexico City’s “Central Park” is known as the lungs of the city. It is a place where hundreds of thousands of visitors flock to every day, but it is also a place that closes overnight to keep its over 1,600 acres safe. Each entrance to the Bosque has a small kiosk for security guards, equipped with the bare essentials. With the constant development and growth of the city, the park committee was interested in renovating their kiosks, which previously had no order or uniform design.

1 | Due to each entrance of the park being very unique, we decided to create three kiosk designs that could be used depending on the needs of the location while possessing a uniform design that would be interpreted by guests as a beacon of information. 2 | By studying each existing kiosk and what park users desired from them, we landed on three main requirements (restroom/guard space, map, trash bins) for each kiosk and two additional amenities (bicycle racks, seating) if and when the space allowed for it.

GLORIETA CHAPULTEPEC Glorieta Chapultepec is a small part of a very large ongoing urban project within the center of Mexico City. The project, Cetram Chapultepec, is a transportation hub that connects the city’s subway and bus system while creating a functional space for pedestrians, cyclists, taxis, and cars to move through. This project is the bridge that connects the city’s financial district with the city’s largest green space amid some of the city’s fastest growing and culturally important neighborhoods. The task of Glorieta Chapultepec is to rescue a historically significant yet battered public space, while fulfilling numerous functions in order to work with its present and future surroundings.
1 | location
1 | The existing public space, surrounded by busy streets, created chaos with pedestrians crossing the street wherever they pleased. By reorganizing the circle and understanding pedestrians’ destination, we were able to guide people through specific routes that helped not only make the circulation around the area more efficient, but would keep pedestrians and drivers safe. 2 | The mounds needed to fulfill necessary functions: the surrounding area was loud due to numerous cars and buses passing through the area, so their vegetation helped not only in beautifying the space, but also to cancel out the noise. The seating and bicycle parking were also crucial in slowing down foot traffic and creating an enjoyable atmosphere. By providing ameneties people wanted to use, we hoped to create an enviroment visitors felt safe in and wanted to make their own.

DETROIT CENTER FOR THE ARTS The project, an ArchMedium design competition, was done in collaboration with Cooperativa Studio. The task was to show on one art board how we could take Detroit’s beautiful but abandoned Michigan Central Station and turn it into a center for the arts. Our solution combined an arts center with a local economic and education hub, where people could learn new trades, incubate small businesses, grow local produce and contribute to a local economy. The vision was to provide Detroit’s citizens with the cultural, economic, and educational sustenance to revive their community from the inside out.

1 | Due to size of the space, we wanted the project to be able to grow towards its purpose with a basic framework that could be interpreted by the communitys’ needs and desires for different types of learning spaces. 2 | With one drawing we wanted to show how we were able to organize the required program along with additional programming that we felt would make the project an anchor for the city. 3 | With a diagram, we showed how we would justify adding new uses and spaces over time by focusing on the individuals that would be impacted by the services provided and those able to contribute and use the space.
