GLIMPSE OF MANNAR
ANNAR, FORMERLY SPELLED AS MANAR, IS A LARGE TOWN, SITUATED IN THE NORTHERN PROVINCE OF SRI LANKA. IT IS GOVERNED BY AN URBAN COUNCIL. THE TOWN IS LOCATED ON MANNAR ISLAND OVERLOOKING THE GULF OF MANNAR AND IS HOME TO THE HISTORIC KETHEESWARAM TEMPLE.
Mannar is known for pearl farming during the ancient Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka was the best producer of high quality pearls in the world and afterwards, the country was known for its baobab trees and for its fort, built by the Portuguese in 1560 and later, taken by the Dutch in 1658 and rebuilt. Its ramparts and bastions are intact, though the interior is largely destroyed.
24
TREASUREISLAND.LK / VOL - 03 ISSUE 08
Formerly, the town was renowned as the centre of pearl fishing, mentioned in the 2nd-century CE Periplus of the Erythraean Sea. Visually, the modern town is dominated by its Hindu temples, mosques and churches. The Catholic Church has a diocese headquartered in the town. Besides the above I will be highlighting here the other valuable flanks of this city. Mannar (Manar) is one of the best hotspots to observing waders in Sri Lanka. Waders are a group of birds that tend to attract your attention towards them. They are considered as the greatest travellers on air. They have a spectacular ability to travel very long distances and can be found to be of varied shapes, sizes, plumage patterns and shades of beautiful colours.

THE MANNAR OF SRI LANKA HOSTS MANY SPECIES OF WADERS AROUND THE VANKALAI BIRD SANCTUARY, BEING THE NORTHERN PENINSULA OF SRI LANKA. THIS SANCTUARY CONSISTS OF A VARIETY OF LAGOONS AND SHORE AREAS IN MANNAR. MOST HIGHLIGHTED ASPECT OF CATCHING A GLIMPSE OF NATURE IS TO WITNESS GREATER FLAMINGOS.
So, Waders mean shorebirds. They occupy the water-body areas that extend to even areas of the shore. For instance, notice how Flamingos prefer to occupy deeper areas of water for their food comprising algae that forms in lagoon waters? The other type of waders remain in the water-body areas of the shore. Generally, most waders are of migratory species and the best time to observe them is around the time winter approaches their original habitat. Between the months of September and May would be the best period to observe these birds in Sri Lanka. Sometimes, these time frames may differ due to climatic changes which occurs around the world.

There are two migratory paths that have been identified in the Indian subcontinent and they enter Sri Lanka through these two paths during the northern winters. We should be proud that many of these waders make their final stop in Sri Lanka to complete their migration process. There are about 45 waders that have been identified as regular visitors to Sri Lanka. It is worth the effort, sighting Greater Flamingos when they fly in flocks encompassing their own kind and when they perform their ‘ballet’ in waters to attract the most suitable partner before they travel back to their own destination. Other than waders there are many other migratory and resident bird species found in this area as well as in the surrounding areas such as Talaimannar. Also, Mannar is a place where no photographer will reject visiting. Hence, it is filled with beautiful scenic appearances wherever you go. The Fishing harbour around sunset has allowed for the capture of some amazing moments and made for some great pictures filled with golden colours besides my wildlife photography. Unfortunately, I cannot publish those pictures here since I have submitted the pictures for contests around the world.

The Battle at Lanka, Ramayana by Sahibdin.
The Ramayana, the ancient Indian epic is much about events that happened in Lanka than in India. And ever since it was committed to memory and recited and later written down it has evoked various emotions, that of love, hate, honour. The reader will decide of what the story has to say. But to us in Sri Lanka this story is of special significance. Since many places mentioned in this epic really exits here. Complete with the narrative history which matches the tale of the Indian epic. And this is how it all began. The most significant character in the story Ravana is from Lanka or as it is know today Sri Lanka. Though the story is supposedly of a tale in North India, the whole story relates around the war that took place in Lanka. To collaborate this we have over fifty places here. Each of these places have a permanent place in local history and folk lore. There are many who claim that this story is only a legend, then what of the places here in this country supporting this? If this is pure legend then how could these places have survived with their tales locally? The list of questions goes on. It will be for you to decide if this legend or truth if so where does the legend end and truth begin. TREASUREISLAND.LK / VOL - 03 ISSUE 08

Sita in the hermitage of Valmiki
The Ramayana is an ancient Indian epic, composed some time in the 5th century BCE, about the exile and then return of Rama, prince of Ayodhya. It was composed by the sage Valmiki, who taught it to Rama's sons, the twins Lava and Kush. the characters are presented with all their human follies and failings, the Ramayana leans more towards an ideal state of things: Rama is the ideal son and king, Sita the ideal wife, Hanumantha ideal devotee, Lakshman and Bharat the ideal brothers, and even Ravana, the demon villain, is not entirely despicable. The story begins with Dasharath, king of Ayodhya, had no children. So he arranged a Putra-kameshti sacrifice. At the sacrifice,Agni (God of fire) arose from the flames and handed the king a golden vase brimming with nectar. "Give this to your queens", said the God and disappeared. The king had three wives. To the eldest, the king gave half of the nectar; the second queen got a portion that remained when the queen had drunk her half. To the youngest queen, the king gave the remaining half of the nectar and again, the second queen got the portion that remained. In time, the queens gave birth to sons: to the eldest was born Rama, to the youngest was born Bharat, and to the second queen were born the twins Lakshman and Shatrughna. RAMA'S MARRIAGE TO SITA The neighboring kingdom of Mithila was home to the Mithila princess, Sita, born of the earth. The king of that country had declared that he would give her in marriage to anyone who could string the Great Bow of Shiva. No one could.

Ravana is meeting Sita at Ashokavana. Hanuman is seen on the tree.
The sage Vishwamitra brought the two princes of Ayodhya. Rama and Lakshman entered the assembly hall where the bow was displayed in all its glory. Rama walked over, picked up the bow, strung it, and plucked the bowstring with such a twang that two things happened simultaneously: the twang was heard for miles around, and the force of it broke the bow into two. Thus Rama was married to Sita. His three brothers were married to a sister and cousins of Sita, and there were many festivities and much rejoicing in the two kingdoms. Subsequently Dasharath decided that he had grown too old to rule and declared he would abdicate in favour of Rama. This is when his youngest queen invoked an old promise that Dasharath had made to her: she demanded that Rama be exiled for 14 years and that her own son, Bharat, be crowned king. Dasharath refused but Rama decided to honour his father's old promise and leaves for the forests. He was accompanied by Sita and by Lakshman. In grief at the injustice of it all and at Rama's departure, Dasharath died within two days. ABDUCTION OF SITA A demoness named Surpanakha saw Rama and, being charmed out of her wits by his beauty, wanted him to marry her. "I already have a wife", said Rama pointing to Sita. "Why don't you marry my brother Lakshman instead?" When Surpanakha turned towards Lakshman, he declared he'd taken a temporary vow of celibacy and sent her back to Rama. Surpanakha being spurned, by now angry beyond measure, rushed towards Sita to kill her, Lakshmana cut off Surpanakha's nose and ears. Surpanakha flew to Lanka (modern Sri Lanka), ruled by her brother Ravana, and complained. Enraged, Ravana vowed vengeance. He persuaded the demon Marich to disguise himself as a golden deer

and wander near Rama's hut. When Sita saw the golden deer, she begged Rama to get it for her. When the brothers were out pursuing the deer, Ravana arrived, abducted Sita, placed her in his flying chariot or as we know it as the 'Dandumonara', and flew through the skies to Lanka. When the princess, after having killed the golden deer and discovered it was a demon in disguise, returned to their hut, they found it empty and started to look for Sita. This is the beginning to the story of Rama's battle to rescue his wife. A story so powerful that even today it is taught to the children in India as refers to Lanka as the land of demons. In our next contribution we will take you through the epic and show the places that still exist today in Sri Lanka. TREASUREISLAND.LK / VOL - 03 ISSUE 08

A’Lankaa Resort & Spa Set to Launch in Time for Valentine’s Day Text by Sara Pathirana
A’Lankaa Resort & Spa is a high-end luxury boutique resort that is set to be launched in February of this year, on time for Valentine’s Day where prospective guests can look forward to a whole new experience. The boutique resort, which was a brainchild of Mr. Vasudevan Rasiah has heavily invested into the project whilst working on a number of other high profile developments set to take place around the country. The resort is located at a picturesque location nestled in the unassuming town of Haldummulla in the Uva Province. There is a reason behind his choice of location and this wasn’t simply an inheritance of a plot of land for him to work on. When you read on, you will get to understand the reason behind this decision of his. Mr. Rasiah had been residing overseas

in a number of countries and has been garnering expertise within the civil engineering and construction sector of which he is a professional. He went on to realize a newfound fondness towards the hospitality sector and eventually, found himself working on a new property here in Sri Lanka. This newfound love for the hospitality trade entailed him to embark on this project on a plot of land just over one acre and the main attraction behind this property is the embracing of a cultural theme as a preface to the resort’s vision of attracting high-end guests. The theme is also unlike anything we might have seen before. Mr. Rasiah wanted to blend in a ‘Ravana theme’ into the resort and delve into rich history of Sri Lanka and allow for guests to experience an out of this world moment that is sure to reminisce with them for years to come. The boutique resort will be staffed by local youth who have been extensively trained in hospitality, with 80% of them hailing from the local. The resort is bound to grow as a much anticipated place of experience and stay for guests as they will also be exposed to amazing facilities such as rooftop paragliding, a Singapore inspired ‘Hawker’s Centre’ where guests can feast on regionally influenced street food varieties, wellness facilities for those who wish to holiday and experience more of a health-based tourism stay. The construction of a heliport is currently undergoing as the owner has designed upon introducing the facility and making the option available for special guests who wish to alight from a helicopter right at the resort. A 24 hour restaurant is also being well-facilitated at the resort. Mr. Rasiah was born in Jaffna in 1952. During his early years, he was educated at the Jaffna Central College and then had moved on to various different schools due to his father who worked as the Director of Agriculture, constantly moving locations in accordance to his work appointments in regions such as Polonnaruwa and Batticaloa to name a few. Eventually, the family settled down in Kandy and most of his higher education was completed in Kandy at St. Sylvester’s College. After finishing his schooling, he went on to pursue a course in Diploma in Technology at Aquinas University College as well as (C.E.I) Chartered Engineering, followed by B. Eng, M. Eng, M. Phil and Contract Law in the UK. He also pursued and completed a Masters of Business Law in Indonesia.
Mr. Vasudevan Rasiah
Following his many stints and exposure aboard, Mr. Rasiah resided in Bali for 16 years where he managed his own company that specialized in the construction of golf resorts and various other boutique resorts. “While engaging in work over there, I met many VVIPs who were visiting from Sri Lanka, either for holiday or work related purposes. At the time, we had a very versatile Ambassador called Major General Nanda Mallawaarachchi. He was instrumental in persuading me to come to Sri Lanka and become involved in the progression of the country,” Mr. Rasiah added. At the time, Mr. Rasiah was not interested in coming back due to the ongoing war and other such disturbances but after 2010, following the end of the war, he made up his mind to come back home. “God had been good to us all these years and I thought it was time to go back home and give back to Sri Lanka every way we can,” he went on. So, after having sold most of his assets in Bali, he brought the money to be invested in Sri Lanka. “I remember, when I was in school at St. Sylvester’s, we were once told that the poorest regions in Sri Lanka, at the time, were recorded to be in the Uva Wellassa area, especially Haldummulla, Beragala and Moneragala. So, I always kept that thought in mind and after I came back to the country, I decided that I would get involved with a project in these areas and give back to these communities in the process and change that cycle. R E S O R T & S P A S E T T O L A U N C H I N T I M E F O R VA L E N T I N E ’ S D AY “I am positive that with the right strategy in place, we can propel tourists who seek to travel to Bali, to instead opt to travel to Sri Lanka to experience this cultural heritage; in the land where it really took place,” he confidently adds. Apart from this project, an initial project by Mr. Rasiah is an ongoing plan to execute a golf resort in Beragala. He decided to build a world-class and eco-friendly golf resort which would also include a luxury villa, theme park, botanical gardens, wildlife reserves, a hospital on par with international standards, retirement village, shopping + business centres and even star rated hotels. “Unfortunately, it is sad that I have to say, although we had a vision and mission in mind for this project, the course would have easily provided employment for over 20,000 individuals but unfortunately, the Sri Lankan mind-set is such that people focus on the aspect of expectation of M.M.L only (Mata monawadha labenne? - What would I get out of it?) So, the project is still on hold. The current narrow-minded and self-indulgent mind-set needs to be diminished. So, gradually I moved on to building my house in Haldummulla and subsequently, on the same plot of land we decided to begin construction of a high-end boutique resort,” he acknowledged.
least then, this statistic would change and these regions would have something to be proud of,” Mr. Rasiah passionately stated. The new luxury boutique property will accommodate 44 suites where 10 suites out of the total would be accommodated for wellness tourism purposes. A Balinese spa experience will also be immersed into the whole wellness/health based experience. Speaking about his idea behind incorporating a historical theme into the resort, Mr. Rasiah explained that tourist destinations such as Bali are mainly hailed as cultural tourism destinations where they leverage a great deal on the aspect of culture and banking on history to earn foreign exchange. However, Bali predominantly focuses on Sri Lankan history. In Bali, around 30 million tourists visit each year; a country that is half the size of Sri Lanka and which basks in strong cultural heritage and which has succeeded in enticing tourists to come, enjoy and experience the culture. The Ramayana/Ravana stories which took place in both, India and Sri Lanka where Mr. Rasiah disclosed that around 60% of the Ramayana/Ravana saga had taken place in the Uva Province.

Another proposed project is a mixed development worth USD 1.5 bn in Jaffna, creating over 40,000 employment opportunities, encompassing entities such as a hotels, residences, an international golf resort, culture, education, sports, IT, healthcare, cruise ship terminal and a container terminal, to name a few. He also has set sights on to the ‘glamping’ concept and hopes to expand his strategies to Poonarin in Jaffna. His future goal lies especially in ensuring that the golf resort plan goes to fruition right after his current project begins to hold ground and begins to break even.

Being a dynamic player in the power sector spanning the electrical, mechanical and civil engineering fields, it is renowned as THE Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractors of major power projects, including Emergency Power Stations. When the Sri Lankan government opened up power generation to private enterprise in 1996, LTL responded positively. Despite being in the midst of a civil war, Lakdhanavi’s sheer determination enabled the company to invest in thermal power development on a Build, Own and Operate (BOO) basis. Whilst its first 25MW plant was built at Sapugaskanda, Sri Lanka, it was followed up with a series of emergency power plants increasing the total capacity tally to 112.5MW by 2002. LIMITED LEVERAGES ON ENGINEERING QUALITY & RESILIENCE
Yugadanavi - The Jewel in the Crown Yugadanavi 300 MW combined cycle power plant is an iconic power plant on the coast just 14 km from Colombo. Yugadanavi’s main operating fuel is Heavy Fuel Oil (HFO). This is the first HFO based combined cycle power plant both in the country and the region and is extremely economical to operate due to the fuel used. Even though HFO is a difficult fuel to operate within a combined cycle plant, it saves a great deal of money for the national economy when compared with a diesel operated plant (over 50 Billion Sri Lankan Rupees to date) and almost covers its total project cost by running with HFO rather than Distillate Oil (Diesel). Built in 2 stages in 2008 as an IPP in record breaking time as a fast track project, its open cycle operations commenced in 2008 with combined cycle operations starting just 2 years later. 200MW are contributed through the open cycle with the additional 100MW originating from the waste heat generated and recycling in its most efficient manner. As the EPC contractor, Lakdhanavi has built a state-of-the-art HFO cleaning facility and a sea water treatment plant with the latest Reverse Osmosis technology at Yugadanavi. It uses zero ground water for its operations.

In just 22 years, Lakdhanavi has delivered over 1,000MW of power generation capacity globally.
So innovative were the design and construction, that the project won the 2008 Asian Power Gold Award for the IPP of the Year. Yugadanavi has now successfully completed its 8th contract year under its 25 year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). It now supplies more than 10% of the county’s peak demand and 15% of the total energy demand. Operation & Maintenance Success Despite Heavy Fuel Oil having a high maintenance factor compared to Liquified Natural Gas (LNG), Yugadanavi has maintained more than 98% reliability and 90% availability throughout its all-time operations. Despite its location in a highly populated area with strict EHS regulations, Lakdhanavi Ltd obtained ISO 9001 & 14001 & OHSAS 18001 certification for the plant O&M for the last 6 years. Accolades and Recognitions Yugadanavi repeated its 2008 Gold Award for the ‘Best Independent Power Producer’ from Asian Power Magazine again in 2016, 2017 and 2018 not just locally but internationally. In 2016, Yugadanavi was awarded with the ‘Best Utility in the Country’ by Asian Power Awards and also the Silver Award for ‘National Occupational Health and Safety Excellence’ in competition with many other Sri Lankan sectors. This was followed for the next two consecutive years by winning both, ‘Best Power Utility of the Year’ and ‘The Innovative Power Technology of the Year’ awards in 2017 and 2018 at the Asian Power Awards.

Speaking to Skyn Spas, Director,John Stave said, that; “The Skyn Spa has been operation for the last 5 years. It has been operating in a transparent fashion. This has made it the preferred Spa for many and especially families. The facility for families to visit most spa's is not generally available in the country. With the spa always being under surveillance every customer knows that at the Skyn his or her safety is assured. The reason being for the safety of' workers as well as the customer.” Speaking furher Stave said, this is a spa that the people are very comfortable with. It was easy to bring it to this stage. Also the products used for our therapies are genuine. The oils used come from a recognized supplier, and the balm used for both the-foot' and the scrub' are from Union Chemists' hence every customer knows that his or her security is assured. The quality is always assured and guaranteed. Perhaps in comparison to other spas the staff here does not earn much. However they earn their wage in a proper and professional way. The last 3
years it has been very successful and we are now hoping to expand. This way we can offer customers other products, such as sleep therapy, which is sleep in an Oxygen enriched room. This gives a perfect rest to the individual. We can see a growth in the market and for would like to see this industry grow into this transparent level. This brings in much needed foreign exchange. Among those we cater to a lot of Indians, Britishers and several other nationalities as well who really need this therapy.

The number of foreigners are on the rise. It won't be long time to see this industry flourishing. The customers are offered a total of 6 varieties of treatments. There is also a full package, where one takes a steam and an oil therapy. There is another thats only the head and shoulders. Here you have a head massage and a shoulder massage. This takes around 20 minutes, especially for those who are stressed out. And there is the 'foot' massage, Especially after walking during the day. The entire by weight of the body is carried by ones' feet. We have to do the massage so it relaxes the feet and the body. There are basically 9

therapies, but the most popular is the foot massage'. Another reason for this is also probably they do not want to get oil on their bodies. They mostly walk in after a tiring day of work and get this foot massage, to help relax., Stave said. We use Epsom Salts to relax the legs and then we use Balms to give the required therapy that the client requires. We can accommodate around 8 clients at any given time. We operate sound the clock. Our shift are such that we are there to give clients services. The peak horns are generally from 6pm to 10 pm, and the days are Thursday- to Sunday,
Finally Stave said, this Skyn Spa has been built up by providing the clients a genuine and lean service. This is confirmed by the fact that we have families that visit regularly. We give good product and that has paid dividends by putting the Skyn Spa at the top of the league.

KING COCONUT FAMILY RESTAURANT With the very first impression of the King Coconut Family Restaurant one would realise that is one of the best tropical restaurants that can be found in the island. Starting from humble roots, the restaurant has now reached vantage heights. The restaurant has a vast history itself going back to the original land where the establishment was set up and the foundation built. However, King Coconut is not even two years old but has attracted a large number of clients in that short term; all of them who left with complete satisfaction. King Coconut Restaurant can easily be considered one of the oldest restaurants in Negombo, given the history of its location alone. With apt colour schemes of orange and brown, the restaurant has embraced the tropical nature not only with its appearance but with its architecture and ambiance as well. The King Coconut has a tropical vibe with its roof covered with coconut fronds and bamboo fences all round. It's also very chilled out, with a great view of the sea and the wind whipping around.

Staying true to the whole tropical vibe of palm trees and nice beaches, King Coconut is one of the many restaurants that line the Negombo beach. It offers you a meal with an excellent sea view to boot. If you stay the night in Negombo or visit the restaurant for dinner you might even be able to get a table out on the beach; and nothing really beats the romance of the sunset, the horizon and the slow lapping of waves. King Coconut Restaurant has a specialty; it provides live fishing to any client. Based on the requests made by the clients, the kitchen has created a system where the product; for example a lobster, might be taken out of a tank that is on display in order to be prepared for the meal. This not only provides a fresh meal to anyone who loves seafood, but provides an exceptional entertainment as well. Fish, crab and lobsters are available for live fishing. Apart from the entertaining live fishing, the restaurant offers lagoon crabs, calamari, fried seer, jumbo prawns; all internationally sought after delicacies. But for those who do not run after seafood, there is always the traditional and various meats and vegan dishes as well.
The restaurant has around 30 years of experience with even the old staff remaining within the company and retaining the experiences within. The kitchen team is equally talented and skilled with two main chefs and several kitchen associates.

Brought to you by the founders of The Heritage Café and Bistro (recently listed in Conde Nast magazine’s ‘How to visit Sri Lanka in 3 Days’) at the UNESCO listed Galle Fort, this new venture is a smooth transition for power-duo Dale Rennie and Sabrina Van Cleef Ault. The Plantation Villas development is the latest in the couple’s portfolio of successful opulent developments across the world. Following a 26-year career in the entertainment industry - having produced live concerts the world over for big name personalities Michael Jackson, Bryan Adams, Bon Jovi, Julio Iglesias, David Copperfield, Warner Bros. on Ice, and productions such as The Bolshoi Ballet, and Marie Osmond starring in The Sound of Music, among others- Dale has since turned his experience into developing some spectacular luxury projects, namely the award-winning ultra-luxury cliff-front property, Villa Anugrah, in Bali, Indonesia. Dale’s wife and business partner, and the creative mind behind The Heritage Café and Bistro -and now The Plantation Luxury Villas-, also represents an illustrious 15-year

career in the F&B and entertainment industry. As the original co-founder and Creative Director for the world famous and highest earning uber luxury nightclub brand Pangaea, Sabrina’s experience spans over six continents. Adding that organic flare to the property’s construction, are the designs of celebrated Sri Lankan architect Manjula Kalhara. Not one to shy away from implementing the unusual, Manjula is known for his strong environmental ethos, and matchless experience in resort-building. Tucked away in a secluded area a few hundred meters from Koggala Lake in Sri Lanka’s stunning south, lies the site for the Plantation Luxury Villa development. Offering 14 exclusive oneand two-bedroom pool residences, sized from 1204sqm – 2650sqm, the resort is a tropical sanctuary aiming to be the island’s most captivating five-star resort hideaway, offering contemporary modern living in a location second to none in the region. These stunning, tropically landscaped escapes provide complete privacy and luxury in every detail, with elegantly furnished living rooms, kitchenettes, deluxe bedrooms with spacious en-suite bathrooms and individual plunge pools. Outside, decks and large pool decks, are perfect for sunset relaxation or entertaining, affording panoramic hilltop views across the tranquil mountain, paddy and jungle settings. Testament to the developer’s commitment to comfort and detail, the rich interiors will exhibit the most comprehensive collection of premier furniture and luxury finishing, incorporating authenticity in a contemporary interpretation of Tropical Modernism in design. The Plantation pool villas will feature large living space

enhanced by high vaulted ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows, revealing to-diefor expansive views. Exquisite culinary offerings of mouth-watering gastronomical diversions will always be on the resort’s menu, catered to suit the pangs of every palette. Additionally, on site round-theclock on call private butlers as well as visiting spa experts, will enable residents and guests to tailor their own dining preferences and spa treatments if they wish a stay-at-home retreat in their private pool villa sanctuaries. As with The Heritage Café and Bistro, Dale and Sabrina hope to ingrain their innate environmental consciousness into the Plantation Luxury Villas ethos as well. A founder of the globally recognised Paddle for The Planet Ocean Awareness Project -now in its 8th successful year running-, Dale has now brought his NPO to the shores of Sri Lanka. Together, they hope to raise awareness on the importance of a plastic free society through their eco-friendly developments.
hospitality to a place we have now chosen to call home,” said Dale Rennie speaking at the event. “Contrary to what has been predicted, Sri Lanka, with its promise of natural beauty and serenity, is still appealing to investors looking for that ideal island get away.” It comes as no surprise then, that after brisk pre-sales over 50% of the property has already been snapped up by market savvy investors, and it was the eight remaining individually-designed oneand two-bedroom residences that were unveiled at the launch event in Galle. The fully furnished and equipped Plantation Luxury Villas are scheduled for completion in January 2020 and may be purchased for either private usage or placed in the resorts rental program for guaranteed 7% per annum returns. The duo behind The Plantation Luxury Villas are also currently adding the final touches to another ongoing project – a boutique hotel set to open late 2019 in Galle Fort. Yamika Gunawardena
The Greatest reward in life is to have a comfortable income and live in a soothing atmosphere. Where can one find such an array of life? The answer is growing anthuriums for profit. The demand for the petals and flowers of anthurium is tremendous.
There are many varieties of anthuriums. The Mahima Group of Companies has propagated over 100 types of anthurium.
However, though the country is blessed with both the climate and the environment, we are nowhere close to tapping the rewards of this gold mine Speaking to Mahima Group of companies chairman Yamika Gunawardena, one can realize the vast gains to be had in venturing into this business. Growing anthuriums can be launched as a small home venture and blossom into a fully – fledged professional nursery. Advice, training and materials will be made available by the Mahima group of companies. For an amateur, this- could done with an initial investment of Rs. 9,000.00 Training programs are also conducted with recommendations for bank loans when growers reach a certain level of proficiency. About 11 banks grant loans for Anthurium growers. From a few square yards, one can expand the project to have 1,000 plants in 5.8 perch. The starter program will cost Rs. 9,000, for 20 plants and material. This is an ideal venture for those who have some space in their gardens. For Middle East returnees who wish to have a steady income while at home, this is an ideal project. The starter program will yield a return between Rs.15,000Rs.18,000 per month.

With colours ranging from black to white, it is easy to see why there is such a demand for them. All plants are imported as invitro plants from the best nurseries of the Netherlands. As certain types need different temperatures, growers are advised to select more suitable types for climate. The plants will take around six months to throw shoots and about nine months to flower. Anthuriums are mainly grown in two districts. Yet, the supply falls far short of the demand. Growing anthuriums can be launched as a small home venture and blossom into a fully fledged professional nursery. Required advice, training and materials will be made available by the Mahima Group of companies. For an amateur, this coild done with an initial investment of Rs.9,000.
