Goldman Sachs: Naira Now World's Top-performing Currency
Goldman Sachs Group, yesterday said the Naira has already established itself as the topperforming currency globally in April, adding that the local currency was expected to extend its gains, amid the continuing effective policy management by the Central Bank of Nigeria
(CBN).
In April alone, the Naira has surged 12 per cent against the dollar, adding to a one per cent increase in March, according to Bloomberg.
The rally was supported by capital inflows and consecutive interest rate hikes, helping to recover from significant losses following two devaluations since last June, triggered by the the floating of the local currency and FX market unification. Goldman Sachs economists, who previously forecasted in February that the Naira would strengthen to N1,200/$ in 2024,

Falling Crude Output: Lokpobiri Says FG Taking Steps to Address Situation
Addeh in Abuja and Peter Uzoho in Lagos
The Minister of State, Petroleum Resources (Oil), Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, yesterday acknowledged Nigeria’s declining crude oil
production in Q1, after an initial rise in recent months.
In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Nneamaka Okafor, the minister assured that measures were being taken to address
the situation, not only to restore production to previous levels, but to increase it in a sustainable manner.
Data from the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), indicated on Thursday, that Nigeria’s crude oil production
witnessed the second consecutive monthly fall since the beginning of this year.
It slumped to 1.231 million barrels per day in March (direct communication), according to the OPEC data, raising fears that the
country could be on its way back to between Q4, 2022 and Q1, 2023, when Africa’s biggest oil producer struggled to drill between 900,000 bpd and 1.1 million bpd.
However, production was 1.39 million bpd, when based on
Tinubu to Govs, N'Assembly Leadership: Let's Unite to Make Nigeria Greater
Akpabio predicts second term victory for President
Deji Elumoye in Abuja
President Bola Tinubu has called for unity of purpose and more collaboration between the federal government, 36 state governors, and members of the National Assembly to achieve national development goals.
The President yesterday, made the appeal while receiving 27 state governors and the leadership of the National Assembly in Lagos.
Led by Vice-President Kashim Shettima, the delegation included Senate President Godswill Akpabio; Speaker of the House
of Representatives, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas; Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq of Kwara State and Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum, among others.
Speaking on behalf of the President, the Vice-President expressed optimism about Nigeria's economic resurgence and called for collective efforts to propel the nation forward.
He urged unity and collaboration among all stakeholders to achieve shared prosperity and promised a brighter future for the nation under President Tinubu's guidance.
"Let us unite, rally around our
leader, and catapult this nation to a greater pedestal. By December, I hope we will have cause to celebrate. Let us coalesce to take the nation to a greater pedestal," Shettima said.
Emphasising Tinubu's role as a unifying leader transcending ethnic and religious lines, the Vice-President noted that the gathering of 27 governors in Lagos, along with the leadership of the National Assembly and some former governors, bears the testimony of a detribalized leader who has embraced all.
According to him: ''This gathering cuts across ethnic, religious, and
political lines. Here, we have Pastor Eno of Akwa Ibom and Father Hyacinth of Benue, and as the President was seated, he was asking, 'Where is Wammako, where is Yari'? That is the hallmark of true leadership. What binds us together supersedes whatever it is that may divide us.”
Earlier, Senate President Akpabio commended the state governors for emulating Tinubu's leadership style, characterised by listening to diverse voices and consulting widely with the people, irrespective of political affiliations.
GOLDMAN SACHS: NAIRA NOW WORLD'S TOP-PERFORMING CURRENCY
in interest rate increases during policy meetings in February and March.
In an interview with Bloomberg, an economist at Goldman Sachs, Andrew Matheny, hinted at the possibility of the naira surpassing this projection and trading even lower against the dollar.
Matheny said: "This probably can run further; we would see an extension of the move to N1,000 and maybe even sub-N1,000."
He noted that since Goldman's February forecast, "six weeks have gone by and they're continuing to hold the line, so that's encouraging."
Goldman Sachs' optimistic forecast aligned with the sustained rally of the naira observed across both the parallel and official segments of the foreign exchange market.
Notably, the naira has demonstrated significant strength against the dollar, reaching notable milestones in recent trading sessions.
At the Nigerian Autonomous Foreign Exchange (NAFEM) window, the naira closed at N1,142.38 per dollar yesterday, compared to the N1,230.61 per dollar it was on Monday.
The upward movement signified an impressive appreciation of N88.23 within a short period.
On the parallel market, the naira continued its upward trend, closing yesterday at N1,150 per dollar, compared to N1,240 per dollar on Monday. This surge reflected a remarkable appreciation of N90 over just three days during the public holidays.
The daily turnover on the official FX window saw an increase of 124.71 per cent, reaching $281.34 million yesterday, compared to the $125.55 million recorded on Monday.
Furthermore, the highest spot rate observed yesterday stood at N1,265, with the lowest spot rate
recorded at N1,100.
The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) of the CBN recently, at its last meeting in March, raised the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR), the benchmark interest rate by 200 basis points to 24.75 per cent from 22.75 per cent. The bank also reversed the asymmetric corridor around the MPR from +100/-700 basis points to +100/300 basis points.
While the CBN retained the Cash Reserve Ratio (CRR) of Deposit Money Banks (DMBs) at 45.0 per cent, it however, jerked up the CRR of Merchant Banks (MBs) from 10 per cent to 14 per cent, and left the Liquidity Ratio (LR) unchanged at 30.0 per cent.
Also, during its February 27, 2024 meeting, the first to be chaired by Cardoso, the apex bank had jolted the markets and beat analysts’ expectations when in one fell swoop, it raised the Monetary Policy Rate (MPR) by a whopping 400- basis points to
22.75 per cent from 18.75 per cent – at a period of biting economic hardship occasioned mainly by the removal of fuel subsidy and floating of the Naira.
The bank had also adjusted the asymmetric corridor around the MPR to +100/-700 basis points from +100/-300 basis points, and further raised the CRR of DMBs to 45 per cent from 32.5 per cent as well as retained LR at 30 per cent.
These initiatives have alleviated the local dollar shortage, reducing volatility and the reliance on parallel markets.
President Bola Tinubu's bold leadership and decisive reforms have birthed the current economic resurgence.
The reforms have laid a strong foundation for sustainable growth and stability, showcasing Tinubu's commitment to addressing longstanding economic challenges and steering the country towards a prosperous future.
"The governors are doing well. I can say so because I have been there before," Akpabio said.
Expressing confidence in Tinubu's leadership, the Senate President noted that the President enjoys the broad support of Nigerians across political divides.
"As you coast home to victory for a second term, may all the governors seated here also coast home to a second term victory in their states," Akpabio prayed.
Also speaking, NGF Chairman, Governor AbdulRazaq of Kwara state expressed support for the 700km Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway, describing it as a huge project that will have a significant impact on the nation when completed.
He commended the President's efforts in stabilizing the economy and improving living conditions, highlighting the positive developments in the country, which include the stabilization of the exchange rate and decreasing food prices.
secondary sources, the information from OPEC stated. Production was 1.322 million bpd February this year, dropping 91 million bpd during the month.
It also represented a huge fall from 1.427 million from January, when there was huge hope that Nigeria was finally recovering. The country’s OPEC quota for 2024 is 1.5 million bpd.
But in a response to recent concerns regarding the shortfall in oil production, Lokpobiri, stated that this was primarily due to issues encountered on the Trans Niger Pipeline TNP), coupled with maintenance activities carried out by some oil companies operating in Nigeria.
“Measures are being taken to address the situation to, not only restore production to previous levels, but to also increase it. The minister clarifies that the reported production shortfall was primarily due to issues encountered on the Trans Niger Pipeline, coupled with maintenance activities carried out by some oil companies operating in Nigeria.
“The minister is also pleased to announce that the issues have been adequately addressed, and production is expected to return to its previous levels in the coming days.
“He anticipates that Nigeria's oil production, including condensate, which was approximately 1.7 million bpd prior to these developments, will soon be restored,” the statement added.

NLC, ABURE-LED NWC SUSTAIN BATTLE FOR LABOUR PARTY CONTROL
the agreement that was addressed to the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), signed by the NLC and LP respectively, stated thus, "We write to inform you that the mediation initiative brokered by INEC in the dispute between the NLC and LP has been successfully consummated on the 27th of June 2022.
"The consummation of the resolution is established in a terms of Settlement which was willingly reached without any duress whatsoever between the two parties, the NLC and LP and validated by the signatures of former President of the NLC, Mr. Ayuba Wabba; the National Chairman of the LP, Julius Abure; General Secretary of the NLC, Emmanuel Ugboaja, and the National Secretary of LP, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim."
The letter which was acknowledged by the office of Chairman of INEC on July 6, 2022, further stated: "In light of the foregoing, we forward herewith with the letter a hard copy of the Terms of Settlement for your consideration Please accept the renewed assurances of our highest esteem."
The terms of agreement between LP and the NLC read: "Consequent upon the Mediation brokered by the INEC between the NLC and the LP which commenced on the 26th of April, 2022, and at which commitments were made for an improved cordial relationship
between the two parties consequent on the Court Judgement by Justice Gabriel Kolawole delivered on 20th March 2018.
"Subsequent to the resolutions of the 2019 National Convention and the 2021 National Executive Council (NEC) meeting of the LP, mandating the National Working Committee (NWC) of the LP to fill vacant and reserved positions in the NWV
"It is hereby agreed as follows:
The following persons are to fill the vacancies in the NWC of the LP: Comrade Ladi Iliya - Deputy Chairman; Comrade OlorunfemiDeputy Chairman; Alhaji Mohammed Umaru - Vice Chairman, North West “The nominations above are in addition to the statutory positions held by the NLC and TUC in the NWC and NEC of the LP. This shall come into effect immediately after signing.
“The following nominations from the NLC will be members of the Board of Trustees of the Labour Party: Comrade S.O.Z. Ejiofor – Chairman; Comrade Salisu Mohammed – Member; Comrade Lawson Osagie – Member; Comrade Najeem Yasin – Member.
“Other members of the Board of Trustees will be nominated as soon as possible after due consultation and the board will be inaugurated not later than one month from signing the accord.
“The Ward, Local Government, State and National Convention of
the Labour Party shall be convened not later than one year of the signing of this Terms of Settlement," the terms of agreement stated, adding that this would be followed with immediate commencement of intensive membership drive into the LP with the aim of mobilising 10 million Nigerians into the party.
The terms of agreement further stated that all pending cases in court related thereto were to be discontinued.
In another letter to LP, which was copied to INEC, the NLC also stated, "However, we wish to express our disappointment that most of the commitments mutually-agreed-upon has-not-been-respected by-the-LP under your leadership.
"For example, you have not implemented item (c) and (d) in the settlement by acknowledging membership and inaugurating the Board of Trustees of the Party."
Specifically, NLC pointed out that, "(e), which stipulates that the National Convention of the Party, including Wards and States should be convened not later than one year of the signing of the Terms of Settlement.
"We are concerned that all discussions and entreaties from us for you to inaugurate an important organ as the Board of Trustees of the Party and commence activities for convening the National Convention have met with deaf ears.
"Consequently, we wish to
put you on notice that we stand irrevocably by the Terms of Settlement that the all-inclusive National Convention of the Party should hold as scheduled one year after signing the agreement on 27th June, 2023. Anything contrary to this will not be acceptable to Congress." Meanwhile, the LP went into its archive to produce historical limitations to the powers of the NLC over the party.
It produced a letter from INEC in 2015, which stated that the NLC does not have any status conferred by the statute over LP, but enjoys the status of any member of the party.
The letter written in 2015, signed by Mrs. Augusta C. Ogakwu, Secretary to the Commission, and addressed to Wabba, read:
“With reference to your letter on the above subject dated August 5, 2015, I am directed to inform you that the Commission has reviewed relevant documents and records in its possession in respect of the Labour Party and has established the following:
“Membership of the LP as provided in Articles 1 and 9 of the LP’s Constitution, 2009, does not confer any special or superior status on the Nigeria Labour Congress.”
The letter, INEC/DEPMI/ LP/16/T/68, was titled: “Re: request for INEC’s Urgent Intervention to Arrest the Activities of an Imposter Group in Labour Party.”
The letter further stated, “In
accordance with Article 15(7) of the LP constitution, 2009, the elected NEC has a tenure of four years.”
In a related development, the embattled national treasurer of Labour party, Oluchi Oparah has chided the Abure-led party, stating the mark of a good and trustworthy person was in his ability to keep his words and respect agreement reached in the course of mediation settlement agreement in the presence of INEC.
She said this in a statement she signed.
According to her, "It is only a morally bankrupt individual who has no moral character that will reach, sign an agreement and then go publicly to deny such agreement.
"The document above will prove to you what I have been saying about the existence of an agreement between the LP and NLC.
“Abure and his cohort cannot continue on this path of lies and deception to justify their illegally convened and purportedly conducted national convention.
"This agreement was signed consequent upon the mediation brokered by INEC between the NLC and the LP which commenced on the 26th of April, 2022, and at which commitments were made for an improved cordial relationship between the two parties consequent on the court Judgement by Justice Gabriel Kolawole delivered on the 20th March 2018.”
vacant as a result of the death of the 42nd holder of the title, Oba Olalekan Balogun, who joined his ancestors early last month.
All members of the Olubadanin-Council present at the meeting ratified the nomination of Olakulehin made by the Osi Balogun of Ibadanland, Oba Lateef Adebimpe.
The meeting, which was attended by Olakulehin, was chaired by the Otun Olubadan of Ibadanland and former governor of Oyo State, High Chief Rasheed Ladoja.
Other members of Olubadan-inCouncil at the meeting were Osi Olubadan, Eddy Oyewole Foko; Ashipa Olubadan, Abiodun KolaDaisi; Ekerin Olubadan, Hamidu Ajibade; Ekarun Olubadan, Adebayo Akande; Osi Balogun, Lateef Adebimpe; Ashipa Balogun, Kola Adegbola; Ekerin Balogun, Dada Isioye and Ekarun Balogun, Abiodun Azeez.
However, absent at the meeting was the Otun Balogun, Oba Tajudeen Ajibola.
Ajibola had on Tuesday, said Olakulehin, who is also his immediate senior in the military line of the Olubadan system, was not fit to ascend the throne, stating that he should be given time to be healthy before he is pronounced and that the seat should remain vacant for now.
But Ladoja while addressing journalists after the meeting, said members of the Olubadan-in-Council had done their part as Ibadan kingmakers.
He further disclosed that a letter would be sent to Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, for government’s consent before the coronation of Olakulehin as the 43rd Olubadan of Ibadanland.
He said, “After the governor’s consent, a day for the coronation will be announced. We thank everyone for the support as we pray that all of us will be alive to witness the coronation."

Aiyedatiwa: No Vacancy in Ondo Government House
Jimoh Ibrahim: You're a huge joker It's mere wishful thinking, I'm succeeding him, Oke declares Governor inaugurates 12 new commissioners
Ahead of the April 20 All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship primary election, the Governor of Ondo State, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, has declared there is no vacancy at the Government House.
However, other governorship aspirants like Senator Jimoh Ibrahim described the governor as a huge joker, while Olusola Oke said it was mere wishful thinking by the governor, saying he would succeed him by February 2025.
Aiyedatiwa disclosed this yesterday
at the national secretariat of the party in Abuja while fielding questions from journalists after he was cleared by the Screening Committee of the party to contest the primary election next week.
His words: "Questions were asked and answered and at the end of the day, I have been cleared that there are no issues. Especially the issue that has to do with the certificate that a petition was written, today that has been put to rest.
"My certificates are genuine and authentic. I think it is just a kind of mischief by some other aspirants who find me to be an aspirant to beat, trying to look for a way to discredit
No Going Back on Protecting Rivers People's Interest, Says Fubara
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has declared that there is no going on the policies and programmes of his administration towards the protection of interest of Rivers people, especially the youths. The governor also stated that every effort at achieving development in any society will come to waste if the health of the people is not adequately factored into it. He said his administration also places as priority youths' development and empowerment, stressing that they are the leaders of tomorrow.
Governor Fubara disclosed this yesterday, when he received the youths of Emohua Local Government Area under the aegis of "Emohua Youths For SIM" on solidarity visit to Government House, Port Harcourt. Fubara who spoke through the Rivers State Head of Civil Service, Dr. George Nwaeke, said that his administration has put in place modalities that will boost the livelihoods and well-being of Rivers citizens, which youths of Emohua will also benefit when they materialise.
The governor, pointed out that the recently awarded Elele-OmudiagaEgbeda-Ubimini-Ikiri-Omoku Road, the ongoing Emohua-Kalabari
Road, reinstatement of illegally sacked workers of Emohua Local Government Area and the approval for electrification of the area, are part of deliberate measures to open up the area to make life conducive and more meaningful for the people.
According to him, "Everything about the governor is putting the interest of Rivers State first. He is looking at and taking action on those things that we need to do to restart the wheels of progress in Rivers State.
"There are many things the governor has planned and is already doing that will boost the life and welfare of every citizen of Rivers State, but most importantly the youths.
"Growing up, I learnt that Egbeda is one of the biggest communities in the whole of Ikwerre, and it's predominantly an agrarian community. They have food in Egbeda, they have food in Ubimini, they have food in Omudiaga and other natural resources. The whole world is tilting towards agriculture, and this is the way to go.
"The Elele-Umudioga-EgbedaUbimini-Omoku Road, when completed, will open up the area for real development. Your food and everything you produce there will now have value, they will no longer be thrown away. In all these, you the youths are going to be utmost beneficiaries," he said.
my person but that has been verified and put to rest.
"I think the issue really regarding that was a school they claim was established in 1980 and how come I was able to write my WAEC in 1982. If you are a student of history you will recall that in 1979, when the Governor of Lagos State at the time, Lateef Jakande became Governor of Lagos State, most private schools were taken over and schools were built for the communities. And Ikosi High school that I attended is one of the schools that were built by the regime of Lateef Jakande in 1980. So, it is on record that the school was established in 1980 and at that time I was already in Form '3' in a private school.
"New Nation is in Ikosi, while Royal Comprehensive High School is in Ajegunle Ikorudu very close to Ketu. So all of us were moved to both New Nation and Royal Comprehensive
High School and some other schools that were affected by the flood. We were all moved into Ikosi High School Ketu that was built by the government and that was how we wrote our WAEC in 1982 because we were in the first set. I was in Form '3' at the time, it used to be five years, not now that you have six years for secondary school.
"So their question, the petitioner is how can a school be established in 1980 and we have a first set in 1982 that the first set was supposed to be in 1985 but he didn't take time to look at the history. So investigation has been conducted, the schools are still there, WAEC office is there where you can actually verify the subject that I took and the year that I graduated and the school. You just need to buy a scratch card and go to the website of WAEC, it will be there - Ikosi High School Iketu and my name will be there with the
subjects that I took and the various grades. So it is clear to everybody that my certificate is authentic and I actually graduated from that school in 1982."
Asked what his advice was for those trying to pull him down, Aiyedatiwa said there was no vacancy in Ondo State Government House.
According to him, "I should just advise them to repent and try to go to the field and work. If they are interested in the seat and the seat is not vacant, that is why they're trying to do all that they are doing."
Responding to what the governor said, Ibrahim noted that the governor would be out of the Government House after the primary election next week.
His words: "He's joking. It is a big joke. He can continue in government with P8, P7. The governor is joking, big joke, huge joke he is cracking with you. He is out of that place by the
time we finish primary next week, he is gone and there is nothing virtually he can do about it.
"I don't normally go against people, to me, clear everybody, let them go for primary, let the electorate determine. I have won elections as Senator, I won in six of the six local governments, 65 of the 66 wards, 111,677 votes against Agboola Ajayi 60,000 votes.
"What is the governor talking about? This governor has never won an election, he contested for the House of Representatives, he didn't win one local government, just two local governments, he couldn't even win one.
"He was a pair to Aketi, we didn't vote for him, we voted for Aketi. But I can assure you, the governor is a huge joker," the lawmaker said.
On his part, Oke was of the opinion that what the governor said was intended to undermine the democratic exercise.
Report: Nearly 55 Million People Will Struggle to Feed in West, Central Africa in 2024
Michael Olugbode in Abuja
Nearly 55 million people in West and Central Africa will struggle to feed themselves in the June-August 2024 lean season, according to the March 2024 Cadre Harmonisé food security analysis released by the Permanent Inter-State Committee for Drought Control in the Sahel (CILSS).
According to a statement jointly released yesterday by United Nations World Food Programme (WFP), United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), this figure represents a four-million increase in the number of people who are food-insecure compared to the November 2023 forecast and highlights a fourfold increase over the last five years.
The statement lamented that the situation is particularly worrying in conflict-affected northern Mali, where an estimated 2,600 people are likely to experience catastrophic hunger (IPC/CH phase 5). The latest data also reveals a significant shift in the factors driving food insecurity in the region, beyond recurring conflicts.
It stated that economic challenges such as currency devaluations, soaring
inflation, stagnating production, and trade barriers have worsened the food crisis, affecting ordinary people across the region with Nigeria, Ghana, Sierra Leone, and Mali being among the worst affected. The statement decried that prices of major staple grains continue to rise across the region from 10 per cent to more than 100 percent compared to the five-year average, driven by currency inflation, fuel and transport costs, ECOWAS sanctions, and restrictions on agropastoral product flows, noting that currency inflation is a major driver of price volatility in Ghana (23%), Nigeria (30%), Sierra Leone (54%), Liberia (10%), and The Gambia (16%).
It explained that West and Central Africa remain heavily dependent on imports to meet the population's food needs, with import bills continuing to rise due to currency depreciation and high inflation, even as countries struggle with major fiscal constraints and macroeconomic challenges.
SMEs Will Continue Pivotal Role in Growth of Nigeria’s Economy, Says Ashiru
Bennett Oghifo
The Chairman of Odua Investment Company, Otunba Bimbo Ashiru, has said that small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are indispensable to the growth of the nation’s economy as they provide innovation to sectors, stimulate job creation, and infuse energy into local markets, regardless of the stiff competition they face from larger companies.
Ashiru, the Chairman of the Association of Small Business Owners of Nigeria (ASBON), stated this at the Nigeria National SME Business Awards (NNSBA) 2024 programme, which was held in Lagos, recently.
He pointed out that maintaining economic development and building a more robust and diversified business environment depended heavily on supporting SMEs through laws that promote entrepreneurship, financial access, and innovation.
Ashiru said he was optimistic that SMEs would continue to propel the country's growth despite obstacles they face as they try to hold onto market share in the face of fiercer competition.
According to him, his optimism is based on the outlook for SMEs, which demonstrate strong performance despite ongoing market uncertainties and cost pressures resulting from
a volatile operating environment.
He said Ogun State offers the proper assistance and a favourable business climate, allowing the businesses to prosper and make even greater contributions to Nigeria's economic development.
To foster successful entrepreneurship, the state government has empowered thousands of SMEs and assisted young people to start and expand their enterprises, he said.
According to him, one of the achievements was the development of a strong fashion sector to assist business owners engaged in the regional Adire textile industry.

"As the Minister of Science and Technology, his dedication to nationbuilding was evident in his focus on fostering scientific advancements and technological innovation in our great nation, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic.
"Beyond his political achievements, Dr. Onu was a man of integrity, wisdom, and unwavering principles. He was a true patriot who dedicated his life to the progress and development of our great nation. His contributions to Nigeria's development will be forever remembered by the nation.

Similarly, in a statement by his Media Office, Ngige described the ex-minister as a sacrificial lamb to formation of the APC.
Ngige, who expressed shock and deep grief over the demise of Onu, described his exit as an unquantifiable loss to Nigeria, entire Igboland and the South East geo-political zone in particular.
He noted that the account of political development in the country, especially from the truncated Third Republic till date, cannot be complete without mentioning Dr Onu's positive contributions.
Kidnapped Channels TV Reporter Regains Freedom
Blessing Ibunge in Port Harcourt
The kidnapped Channels Television Reporter, Joshua Nte Rogers, has regained his freedom, THISDAY learnt last night. Sources close to the journalist confirmed his release, even though the police were yet to make an official statement Rogers was kidnapped on Thursday, by unknown gunmen at about 9pm in front of his residence at Rumuosi, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers state.
It was also gathered that the victim, a native of Andoni LGA, was kidnapped on his way from office in front of his residence and his official black GAC GS4 SUV was also taken by his abductors. A source close to the victim had revealed that operatives of the Police Command, State Security Service, Navy, Army and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps had commenced action to rescue the journalist. In reaction, Andoni, Opobo/Nkoro Journalists Forum had condemned the kidnap of the member, Joshua Rogers.
In a statement jointly signed by its President, Dr. Philip Owajioboro, Secretary, Allwell Ene, the Forum had frown at the incident, insisting that his abduction was not only barbaric but a threat to journalism practice in Nigeria.
The group had therefore, called on the Nigeria Police and “indeed all security agencies to without delay ensure the release of our member Joshua Rogers unhurt", just as they had also urged his abductors to release him unconditionally without delay.
Bobrisky Bags Six Months Imprisonment Without Option of Fine
Wale Igbintade
Justice Abimbola Awogboroof the Federal High Court in Lagos has sentenced controversial cross-dresser/ transgender, Idris Olanrewaju Okuneye, popularly known as Bobrisky, to six months imprisonment without an option of fine for abusing Nigerian currency.
The judge while sentencing Bobrisky, said the judgement should be a deterrent to others that are fond of abusing and mutilating the Naira.
Prior to the sentence, the judge asked Bobrisky of his sex, to which
he answered, 'I am a man". Consequently, the judge ruled that the jail-term would commence from the day of his arrest, March 24, 2024.
It would be recall that the court had on April 5, convicted the defendant after he pleaded guilty to the four counts charge of abusing the Naira made against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The judge consequently adjourned to last Thursday, for sentencing, but the day was declared as public holiday by the federal government
for the Eid-l-fitri celebration.
The charges against him read: "That you, Okuneye Idris Olanrewaju, on the 24th day of March,2024,at imax Circle Mall, Jakande, Lekki, within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court whilst dancing during a social event tampered with| tHe total sum of N400,000.00 (Four Hundred Thousand Naira) notes issued by the Central Bank of Nigeria by spraying same and you thereby committed an offence contrary to and punishable ’ under Section 21(1) of the Central Bank Act, 2007.
According to him, when Nigerians needed a change from the 16-year rule of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Onu made himself the sacrificial lamb to offer Nigerians an alternative in the All Progressive Congress (APC).
Ngige recalled with nostalgia, their first meeting in 1993 when Onu was the Governor of Abia State on the platform of the National Republican Convention (NRC) and himself, the President of the Igbo socio-economic think-tank, Aka Ikenga, to discuss South-east regional integration.
He said, "We got closer in 2012 during the formation of APC. That time, I belonged to the Action Congress of Nigeria (ACN) with the current President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Bisi Akande, Segun Osoba and others. As
a matter of fact, I volunteered and was assigned the role of monitoring Dr Onu to continue with the merger discussion, during which he selflessly gave up his ANPP National Chairmanship to see that the merger succeeded.
"The merger of ANPP, Muhammadu Buhari's Congress for Progressive Change (CPC), our party, ACN and a faction of the All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) led by then Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha, produced the ruling APC in 2013.
"By 2015, we outsted the PDP and became the ruling party at the centre.
I was appointed Minister of Labour and Employment, and Onu, Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation. Both of us served eight years in the Federal Executive Council (FEC) under
President Muhammadu Buhari.
"As a former colleague in the FEC, I remember his intelligent contributions to memos during our weekly meetings. The country lost a teacher, an erudite scholar, intellectual, politician and public servant par excellence," he said On his part, Emenike said the deceased left democratic credentials worthy of emulation, describing Onu as a thoroughbred academician and politician, who was not in the mould of the typical Nigerian politician.
According to him, Onu was a gentleman, "who ranked among the very few highly principled politicians in this clime," adding that with people like him, "Nigeria's politics would be free of rancour, deceit, betrayals," among other bad tendencies.
Gov Sani: Kaduna Hospitals Have Not Been Renovated in Last 20 Years
John Shiklam in Kaduna
Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, has lamented that 32 general hospitals in the state, have not been renovated in the last 20 years.
Sani said the situation has unfortunately made citizens travel to neighbouring states for medical care.
The governor stated this while addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) stakeholders from the 23 local government areas of the state who paid him Sallah homage at the Government House, Kaduna .
The governor also said that over 1,500 schools in the eight local government areas of the state worst hit by security challenges, do not have fences.
He however said, his administration has resolved to remodel, reconstruct and reequip six of the general hospitals, two in each of the three senatorial zones of the state.
The governor disclosed that, as part of efforts to complement the government’s commitment to implementing the Safe School Initiative, two prominent Kaduna-based business moguls, Alhaji Adamu Atta of Fifth Chucker and Alhaji Bukar Shettima of Barbados, have promised to build fences for 100 schools.
Sani said, “In the last one month, I have received reports from our deputy governor, who is one of the most prominent, established public health specialists in Nigeria, that our 32 general hospitals in Kaduna as we speak, most of them are not functional.
“Because of that, most of the patients from Kaduna have to travel to some neighbouring states for medical attention.
"This is unacceptable. That is why we have decided to remodel, reconstruct at least six of the 32 general hospitals.
"This project will be starting by
the grace of God on Monday, that is in the next few days.
According to him the general hospitals are located in Rigasa, Maigana, Gwantu, Kafanchan, Giwa and Ikara.
“The reason we believe we have to invest in the healthcare, particularly at the secondary healthcare level is simply because most of these hospitals I mentioned have not been given attention in the last 20 years, and that is the reason they in their current situation," the governor said. He said his administration is also focusing on education which he said is the greatest enabler to the children of the poor.
The governor noted that as a result of the unfortunate incident that happened in Kuriga, where about 137 children were kidnapped, the government embarked on the assessment of all schools, particularly junior secondary schools and primary schools.

Audit Report: Senate Probing 774 Federal Agencies Over Auditor General's Queries
The Senate is currently scrutinising the financial records of 774 federal agencies based on the queries raised against them in the 2019 report of the Auditor General for the Federation.
The Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC), Senator Aliyu Wadada, disclosed this yesterday in his Keffi, Nasarawa State, country home while speaking with journalists. He noted that his committee was not out to witch-hunt anyone but pledged that members of the panel would discharge their responsibilities
diligently in the best interest of the country. Wadada, also disclosed that the 10th National Assembly with the support of President Bola Tinubu and critical stakeholders in the nation's economy would soon embark on the amendment to the 2007 Procurement Act so as to curb financial infractions before they take place. He nevertheless appealed to leaders at all tiers and heads of government institutions at the federal, state and local government levels to embrace the spirit of self-discipline and fear of God in the discharge of their responsibilities.

The Senator, who is representing Nasarawa West Senatorial District on the platform of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), said no matter how beautiful a law is crafted, it needed godly people to implement it.
Wadada said, "When I became the Chairman, Senate Public Accounts Committee (SPAC), I was emphatic on the need for President Bola Tinubu to appoint the substantive Auditor General for the Federation (AuGF).
"I even wrote a letter to that effect to the President and he responded by appointing a substantive AuGF.
"The AuGF report for the 2020, 2021,
2022 fiscal years were not all ready. It was only the 2019 Auditor General's report that was then ready for us to take actions on.
"The Auditor General's report for 2020 was ready at the time I became the Senate Public Account Committee but it could not be signed by the acting Auditor General for the Federation.

Granted N50m Bail, Case Adjourned to April 29
Funke Olaode
The Special Offences Court in Ikeja, Lagos, yesterday, granted bail of N50 million to former Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Governor, Godwin Emefiele.
Judge Rahmon Oshodi ruled on the bail application, granting Emefiele bail with the condition of providing two sureties for the same amount.
The former governor of the CBN is on trial facing 26 charges related to accusations of office misuse.
Meanwhile, a CBN Staff, Mr. Monday Osazuwa, yesterday, told an Ikeja Special Offences Court how former CBN Governor, Emefiele, on different occasions, directed him to collect the sum of $3 million cash in tranches.
Osasuwa, while being led in evidence by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Counsel, Mr. Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN), said he was a dispatch rider in Zenith Bank since 2001 before he joined CBN as a contract staff in 2014.
According to him, Emefiele was the Managing Director of Zenith Bank, while he was working as a dispatch rider in the bank. He said he knew Emefiele, who was his boss while at Zenith Bank before and later joined him in CBN. The witness said he was later appointed as a Senior Supervisor (full time) in recording and filing of documents while working in the governor’s office in Lagos.
According to him, “I was still working in the governor’s office while I was appointed as a full staff and we usually communicate through whatsApp and email.
“I perform as a senior supervisor, recording and filing with other official roles.
“I could recall in 2020, when he was outside Lagos, he called me and said that he will give me a number that a man has something, I should collect something from him and that the man will give me another number of another person.
“When I got to man’s office, he was given an envelope, counted the money and said I should give it to my boss.”
The witness further told the court that the first defendant usually collected money by himself anytime he was in Lagos, but any time the defendant was not around, he would tell him to give the money to the
second defendant Osazuwa also added that Emefiele sent him to MINL Ltd when he was with Zenith Bank.
According to him, “This company is situated at Isolo, the first defendant do send me to collect cheques from the company from Mr. Monday and when I collect the cheque from Mr. Monday, I will give it back to Emefiele and he will lodge the money into Dumies Oil and Gas.”
According to him, Emefiele’s co-defendant, Henry Isioma-Omoile, lived in the residence of the former CBN governor.
He stated that when he collects money for his boss, he takes it to his residence at Iru Close, Ikoyi.
According to him, “Whenever
I receive the money and take it to my boss residence, Mr. Emefiele will tell me to give it to the second defendant whenever he was not at home.
“I did not keep record of transactions because the instruction he gave me was that I should collect the money and bring the money to his house.
“The highest amount I collected was $1 million all in cash and some weeks later, the businessman also called me $850,000, $750,000 and $400,000 cash in tranches.
“I have never been rewarded, paid or given anything because I am doing it out of faithfulness and he knows it but he has never for once said ‘take this’.”
I'm Legitimate Product of Fair Election, Says Igbo Leader
The embattled President of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Lagos Branch, Chief Sunday Ossai, has said his emergence as the leader of the socio-economic group was a product of fair and transparent election.
Ossai, who disclosed this recently in Lagos, said his victory was the will of the people who voted for him in 2022, as his leadership has the blessing of President-General Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu. He said, “The leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo ably led by our President-General has come to Lagos several times to endorse my leadership at state level.
“My tenure which is expected to end in 2026 was constituted by a legitimate electoral body in April 2022 which was done under the leadership of the immediate past President. I am a product of a free, fair and legitimate election which I won.”
In the current leadership tussle rocking the group in Lagos, Ossai acknowledged that the constitution of the Ohanaeze Ndigbo clearly stipulates one term for any president. He explained that as a group, how to improve the socio-economic well-being of every Ndigbo should take the centre stage rather than the tenure elongation crisis hampering his tenure as the duly elected president.
According to him, “Ohanaeze constitution does not provide any condition for a second term and even taking the group to court as any issues are regarded as cultural matters which are resolved by the elders.
“I am a product of a free, fair and transparent election which I won on 16th June, 2022. Having contested against three others in an election that was constituted by the immediate past president.”
Corroborating Ossai’s position, Eze Ndigbo of Ikosi Isheri LCDA, who is also the Secretary General, Remy Anyamele, debunked claims that there were two presidents of Ohanaeze Ndigbo in Lagos.

Pharmacists under the umbrella of the Association of Hospital and Administrative Pharmacists of Nigeria (AHAPN) have demanded for immediate implementation of the Pharmacists Consultant Cadre on CONHESS 13-15 in Federal Tertiary Hospitals as approved by the federal government since September 2023.
The National Chairman of AHAPN, Olabode Ogunjemiyo, who expressed his disappointment at the non-compliance of the directives by the relevant agencies, despite approval by the Federal Civil Service Commission, appealed for expedited action on the matter to ensure that no profession is shortchanged in the health sector.
In a letter addressed to the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare, Daju Kachollom; Ogunjemiyo commended her efforts in ensuring that the Consultant Pharmacist Cadre and harmonisation of call duty allowance for pharmacists with the Doctor of Pharmacy Degree becomes a reality, but appealed for the implementation of the
government approval as contained in the circular from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare with reference number C5516/Vol.11/289 and dated 14th September, 2023. Ogunjemiyo, referred to the circular to all CMDs and MDs of all Federal Tertiary Hospitals, which directed the "immediate implementation of Pharmacists Consultant Cadre with strict adherence to the clarification/ guidelines provided by the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation (OHCSF) in circular Ref. Alleged Threat to Life: Blogger Ofoegbu Bail Application Stalls
Chizorom Harrison Ofoegbu, a blogger who is also known as Ijele Speaks, is to spend another seven days in prison as the ruling on his bail application failed to hold in Abuja yesterday. He was dragged before the Wuse Zone 6 Magistrate Court Abuja by the police for threatening the life of Evangelist Ebuka Anozie Obi, the founder and spiritual director of Zion Prayer Movement Outreach. His bail application could not be ruled on yesterday as a result of the ill-health of Chief Magistrate Emmanuel Iyanna handling the alleged criminal intimidation, threat to life, cyberstalking, and cyberbullying of Evangelist Ebuka Obi.
The Chief Magistrate had, on Monday, fixed Friday to rule on the bail application filed by the blogger through his lawyer, Mr. Marvin Omorogbe. Parties in the matter, who were in court as early as nine in the morning, were later
informed by an official of the court that it would not sit because the trial Magistrate was indisposed.
Speaking on the Chief Judge’s absence, the Clerk said, “My Lord is not feeling fine. Yesterday I called him and from his voice, I observed he is not feeling well. I just made a call now, he told me that he is seriously down.”
Consequently, April 18 was fixed as new date for the ruling on the bail application by the blogger.
Defence counsel had, on Monday prayed the court to set aside the remand order granted against his client and order his release from the Keffi Correctional Center or, in the alternative, admit him to bail. Opposing the application for the bail of the applicant, Police Lawyer, Obiora Ejiofor said, there was no evidence placed before the court to warrant the exercise of its discretion to grant the applicant bail.

Most importantly we see people and those in the government do 50% off but we the Government of the Lord Jesus Christ can do better. Philip Shaibu: Lessons for Deputy Governors
Philip Shaibu has been impeached as the deputy governor of Edo State and replaced by 38-year- old Omobayo Godwin. He has declared his impeachment illegal, but until a court of law follows suit, such a declaration would deputy governor.
In Nigerian politics, the heads that are reared up too soon are swiftly cut off and served in salomenic style as the prize for ambition in a gathering of power.
Whenever deputy governors have replaced governors, it has been a case of restraint, and sometimes helplessness. Otherwise, it is only hostility that is displayed. That hostility now haunts Shaibu.
Since he indicated his intention to become governor, he has become the number one enemy to power in the state. Godwin Obaseki, the governor, has been open in his opposition to Shaibu’s bid. Obaseki’s grouse that Shaibu did not tell him has quickly become fierce opposition to his bid in all respects. It is a strange case of a governor being in the opposition together with the legislature, all arrayed in battle against one man.
As the theatre has unfolded in Edo State, turning theatrics to weapons in one of Nigeria’s most politically conscious states, the impossible fate of a deputy governor who aspires to be more than a figurehead has been laid bare.
Snippets from Shaibu’s side of the story which have come more out of compulsion than actual consternation or contempt betray feelings of betrayal. Having sunk his resources into a joint ticket, he feels he should now be the first name on what is a testament to its success story. But that is not how things work. In the cut-throat world of Nigerian politics, loyalty is often a knife sharpened for one’s back.
In his bid to become governor, Shaibu has evoked the homeboy trope. A career activist and unionist who rose to fame during the heady days of student unionism in Unijos, he considers himself the quintessential homebred politician who
not only knows where the pulse is in Edo State but feels it first-hand. In this wise, Shaibu favorably compares himself to a certain favourite for the son of the Edo State governorship who needed a translator to commune with his kinsmen and spirits when he visited his community.
What iniquitous offence did Shaibu commit to impel his impeachment? What has changed to make a pariah out of a man who has claimed to have bankrolled elections in 2016 and has not been challenged? Obaseki and his stooges in the state legislature sure have no coherent answer. Shaibu’s fate sealed from the moment private disaffection over the next governor of Edo State spilled into public disagreement is a remaking of the impossible remit of the Nigerian deputy governor. An office hamstrung by the Constitution itself is often made impossible by the clownish tendencies of governors who act like emperors, and crave control of everything. CCultism and the Society
ultism is a negative behaviour; an antisocial behaviour which is not acceptable and can cause harm to the well-being and image of the society. Cultism is a secret cult mostly found in our educational institutions. Examples include: the Black Axe, Eiye and activities are carried out usually in the dark, most often against the accepted norms and values of the society. Cultism has become a major social problem both within and outside our higher institutions. Cult members have killed many people in the universities. It has been observed that students who indulge in smoking, drinking and generally live ungodly lives easily become cult members.
Cultism like so many other societal ills, started in Western Nigeria in 1952. There are intense occult manifestations, false prophesies, sorceries, divinations, enchantments, and familiar spirits that have been at an all time high. Too many wrong information especially the ones on social media are destroying our youths. There are people today who carry enchanted charms and marks, using them for evil purposes. Many wear charms, demonic rings and amulets used
to harm and rob others. The South East Nigeria experienced the dark side of cultism when young students in Ebonyi State University, Ikwo, chose nothing but the extreme beliefs, dictates of secret cult in the early 2000s.
The same scenario has come down to Nnamdi Azikiwe University. In the past one year, Awka the capital of Anambra State has been witnessing an upsurge in killings, arson, deadly assault and rape being perpetuated by cultists. Many youths have joined secret cults as a way to live a life of choice, freedom and happiness. We may not be certain whether victims are members, rival gangs but it has generated fear, intimidation and terror amongst the inhabitants.
Becoming a member of a secret cult can be caused by family background or peer group influence. Some young boys and girls joined secret cults in school just by mere curiosity. The present structural unemployment in Nigeria has equally made some people to join secret cults. Lack of self-confidence and perceived injustice is another good reason for others. Some school authorities in various institutions are already members of a secret cult thereby pressuring the young ones to join. Exposure to violent films and other reckless lifestyle can as well predispose someone to become a member.

It used to be 30 pieces of silver to sell out but now at the Olympics it is $50,000 if you win gold.
The Olympic have changed over time with some sports, Live Pigeon Shooting (1900), Rope Climbing several times in the early 1900s now gone and Bmx riding, break dancing, skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing there in Paris 2024. There seems to an almost desperate effort to renew interest in a competition that is still popular anyway. The prize money goes against the basic premise of the games even though many countries already pay the winners.
It used to be all about representing your country to your best ability and as Eddie the Eagle showed you don’t have to come first to be a winner. Dennis

TECH HUB
Accelerating Tech Ecosystem through Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund
Tech experts have thrown weight behind the Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund even as they argued that without addressing the fundamental challenges, the initiative may not be feasible, writes Ayodeji Ake
On March 26, 2024, President Bola Tinubu, approved the establishment of an Infrastructure Development Fund to facilitate effective infrastructure development across the nation’s critical sectors.
Tagged, “Renewed Hope Infrastructure Fund,” the fund is expected to invest in critical national projects, which, according to the presidency, would among other things promote growth; enhance local value-addition, create employment opportunities, and stimulate technological innovation and exports.
In the area of digital economy, the development agenda recognised digital technologies and innovation as the new frontiers of economic development becoming important vehicles of economic growth around the world.
The agenda noted that investing in the ICT sector and the digital economy would stimulate the local industries, enhance competitiveness, increase productivity and provide millions of Nigerians with new skills as well as long-term job and wealth creation opportunities.
Some major digital products and services: Information and Communication Technology (ICT)-enabled outsourcing, innovation and entrepreneurship, e-Commerce, tech manufacturing, government digital services, Broadband by 2025, and Blockchain, were identified as having the greatest potential to bring new jobs and greater diversification to our economy.
Excerpt from the infrastructure fund on tech reform, signed by the president states: “ICT-enabled outsourcing offers the broad seat opportunity to bring new jobs to Nigeria and productively engage young Nigerians in the evolving digital global economy.”
On innovation and entrepreneurship, it states that, “the start-up ecosystem will provide the platforms and Infrastructure to enable the take-off innovation-driven enterprises that utilise ICT for the development of a diverse array of products and services for all sectors of the economy.
“Already in Nigeria, fintech start-ups, emerging from this category, have become attractive targets for significant domestic and international investment.”
Speaking with THISDAY on the federal government’s initiative, the Director of Uleval Technology, Mr. Adebisi Gbenga, hailed Tinubu for his steadfastness and devotion towards development, especially in the area of tech.
He acknowledged that the ICT manufacturing agenda included in the document was a welcome development, noting however that it required a force to drive the patronage of made-in-Nigeria products and technology.
He said Nigeria has the capacity and intellect of software development and phone manufacturing and assembly.
“This agenda by the President is a laudable one. To start with, in the area where the assembling of phones is stated under ICT manufacturing, I will say it is very possible. If Nigerians would be willing to patronise made-in-Nigeria phones, then it’s possible.
“Sighting example with our prepaid meters that are locally made. And considering the kind of infrastructure the manufacturing company has, it’s very commendable. They have a complete production process.
“If we can have something of such in Nigeria, then having a smartphone production company and not just assemble is very possible. It definitely will need a lot of investment
but it’s feasible.
“Gone are the days when we say Nigeriamade products are substandard because local companies are spending more to get their staffs trained outside the country. Private organisations sponsor the engineers to places like China to get trained.”
Speaking further, he said: “Software development in Nigeria is top-notch. You wake up every day and you see different ideas flying around. Nigerians are improving every day.
“Some of our fintech companies are doing a fantastic job. Gone are the days where you experience slow transactions or hanging transactions.” Speaking on the challenges, Gbenga noted the government needed to work more on the issue of bureaucracy, affecting access to data.
He emphasised the need for a marriage between the public and private sectors to pave the way for data access for development. “The only challenge I see here is bureaucracy. Getting access to some information in some government offices is not what comes easy. You have to go through a lot of conditions for information and accreditation. It discourages us.
“The private and public sector needs to come together with a handshake to provide solutions. There are some that the government can’t have access to and vice versa which is why there should be a marriage.” While also praising the government, a software tester, Miss Ajibola Oladokun, spoke on challenges that may hinder the feasibility of the infrastructure fund.
She noted that, for ICT-enabled outsourcing, ICT manufacturing among others, identified in the infrastructure fund, power supply, and improved internet access need to be addressed.
Oladokun, said there was a large number of tech experts who work remotely affected by the poor power supply and untrusted internet access.
“It’s a good thing that the government was able to understand the importance of
tech in the world today.
“And the major role tech can play in our economy. For me, the agenda is a good one but I hope the problem won’t be implementation.
“Truly, Nigeria has the capacity for software development but we also have some lazy ones among them. There are vibrant Nigerians who have fantastic ideas and are developing problem-solving software, while there are so some who steal ideas. Changing the narrative of code copying is also very important.
“But it is sad that we don’t have a good atmosphere for tech development. One of the problems is electricity. If the problem of electricity can be solved, then over 50 per cent of the problem has been solved.
“We have a large number of tech experts like myself who work remotely and we get frustrated and discouraged due to lack of electricity. Another one is the network provision. It’s quite unfortunate that in Nigeria, you can’t bank on one. Working remotely will compel you to have different networks in case one shuts down. And some don’t work in some areas. Access to the internet is another major challenge.”
In his contribution on the aspect of Blockchain technology in the document, the Founder of Pepework International Nig. Ltd., Daniel Akinyemi, noted that adopting Blockchain Technology would foster transparency and eliminate corruption.
“In my opinion, I will say this administration is doing a lot of things right. I have been educated in several forums that this administration has never at any point in time banned crypto.
“In the infrastructure fund document, it is clearly stated that the government will leverage blockchain technology to revamp the economy because of the transparency and the smooth transaction that blockchain has exhibited for the years.
“Through blockchain technology, corruption can be eliminated because every transaction will be seen.
“Blockchain can help us eliminate corruption and it can be replicated in every ministry for accountability.
“Also I will also want to commend the recognition of our e-naira because it’s also pivotal to the development. I feel the current administration has been able to maintain every good initiative from the past administration and they are building on it and they need to do more,” he said.
Speaking on challenges that may pose a threat to the plans of the government, Akinyemi also mentioned the issue of poor power supply and internet frustration.
“I know it takes time to put things together but I will say Nigeria is behind schedule in terms of infrastructure development. Although it’s underway the government needs to speed up. The power supply is also very key.
“They just increased the tariff but what’s important is that the power should be stable and available because they cannot be produced without power. “The industrial revolution is impossible without power. If we can move to the era of one gigabyte in seconds then we can be proud of our internet access.
“There is hope that Nigeria’s economy is going to boom very soon which is why I have been urging Nigerians to get involved especially in the area of blockchain technology,” he said.

Represented by Isoken Aigbomian, the Regional Sales Manager, Moniepoint, Ndugbu said: “There is the online payment platform, there’s the in-person payment option, and then there is the cash payment via our agent network, which I think Moniepoint has the largest agent network. “We have a wide variety of payment options that we offer to businesses today. Today our online payment options cascade to all sectors, from agriculture to savings to investment.
“We have several businesses that we currently provide online APIs where they can receive car payment transfers, pay for their phone bills; where customers can process transactions seamlessly via different channels.” Ndugbu, further stated that the bank has its disbursement API that allows businesses to carry out bulk transfers to customers in real-time, seamlessly, without any manual verification required.
“These options that we offer businesses stand us out as a force to reckon with in the payment space today. Monnify, our payment gateway, is among the top three payment platforms for businesses today,” he added.
Explaining further what Moniepoint has brought to the payment space, he said, “When in 2019 we were approached by an organisation that we had recorded for a while, they reached out to us and told us in the payment space they were mainly card processors, they were only processing card transactions.

An Urhobo King Seeking God’s Heart
Allison Abanum
Traditional ceremonies are often colourful, cheerful and all round jolly good fun, more so when it is centered around the King of the land who is the chief custodian of the culture and traditions of the land. It is a time when all the sons and daughters of a kingdom gather to acknowledge their roots and celebrate their heritage. One of such occasions was held recently in the magnificent kingdom of Umiaghwa-Abraka in Ethiope-East Local Government Area of Delta State, where the entire kingdom came out to honour its illustrious King, The Ovie of Umiaghwa-Abraka Kingdom His Royal Majesty, Lucky Ochuko Ararile, Awaeke 1. on his 12th year anniversary celebration on the throne as ruler of the kingdom.
The three-day event brought the entire kingdom to a standstill as invited guests came in from parts of the state not just because of the king as an institution but his person, having deligently served his country profoundly. His Royal Majesty, Lucky Ochuko Ararile, Awaeke 1 is a retired Air Vice Marshall (AVM). He was born in 1954 and served distinguishly for 35 years as a dedicated Air Force personnel. During the long service of the monarch in the Nigerian Air Force, he was part of the Peace Keeping Mission to Liberia, Sierra Leone and other parts of the world, he was particularly instrumental in restoring peace to the Niger Delta region. His military involvement in Chad, Liberia and Sierra Leone and at home largely served as the basis for his appointment as the pioneer Coordinator of the Federal Government’s Amnesty Programme for ex-militants. His subjects say he is not only a blessing to his community Abraka but indeed to Nigeria as a whole.
The first two days of the event saw the 5 royal houses in the Kingdom take turns to come pay homage to the King. displaying the beautiful array of their culture and traditions. They brought along gifts and greeted the king as if to acknowledge his supremacy as the traditions of the land provides. King Lucky Ochuko Ararile despite being a monarch had always displayed his love for God and the things of God. A strong baptist member, he always maintained the precepts of Christianity in his dealings and this occasion was not going to be an exception.
Distinguished guests from all works of life graced the grand finale to mark this landmark year on the throne and the guests included the Governor of Delta state who was ably represented and other top government functionaries. Also present were traditional rulers from all over the state most notably was His Royal Majesty King Michael Omeruo, the paramount ruler
of Agbon Kingdom. He also is a strong member of the Baptist Church thereby cementing the notion that The king clearly values those with good relationship with God.
The Kings made sure to display their admirable Christian inclinations as they sang songs of worship to God almighty both in the English and in the native Uhrobo dialect. Upon taking the stage to address the vast crowd present, the King made sure to touch on pressing issues facing the kingdom, State and Nation at large. Particularly addressing the negative happenings in Okuama where on the 14th of March 2024 a bloodbath had ensued gruesomely claiming the lives of four senior officers and 12 soldiers of the Nigerian Army, and the subsequent invasion and shutdown of activities in the area by the army as they seek to fish out the perpetrators of the act.
Being a retired Armed forces veteran himself, The King pleaded passionately lending his voice to the already echo of stakeholders demanding an end to the military exercise in Okuama to enable the natives of Okuama and its adjoining communities to return home to resume their normal life in the aftermath of the March 14 bloodbath. He unequivocally stated that the Army knows what to do in their bid to get the killers of their men. He passionately made it clear that the Urhobo people are warm and hospitable folks and that they are not violent neither are they killers. Speaking on his authority as a king and a custodian of the culture and traditions of Urhobo land he authoritatively made a defense for his people stating that they should not be termed vile names such as killers as it is never in the nature or culture of the Uhrobos to commit such atrocities and therefore the Army should halt their excessive aggression in the area which has practically shut down the entire community and its neighbors preventing innocent people from going about their normal businesses and causing untold hardships that will take a long time to recover from
Further admonishing the army to leave the task of fishing out the perpetrators to the Nigerian Police as the incident falls within its jurisdiction and not the full blown military exercise ongoing in Okuama. He further weighed into the discussion of empowering the police enough to be able to handle situations as this effectively. He admonished the army to use the right mediums to go after the enemies that carried out the act rather than punish the innocent many for the sins of an unruly few with shady ambitions. He further encouraged the people especially the youths to law abiding and less moved to rebel against government security institutions or any way feel that they are more powerful or can deliver justice better. No one should take matters into their own hands
The Monarch also delved into issues concerning the Nigerian economy and pleaded with all Nigerians to patient with the President Bola Tinubu-led administration as he is adamant that the
Ararile
president is on the right track to change the fortunes of Nigerians especially as immense hardship is wreaking havoc on Nigerians all over the country. He also pleaded for patience as he could relate to daunting task the administration is facing and he is very optimistic about the successes of the moves made thus far. He declared that no good breakthrough comes without discomfort and echoed that in the nearest future Nigerians would be grateful for the strides the president and his team a making in other the make Nigeria a better place.
The 12th anniversary celebration of His Royal Majesty, Lucky Ochuko Ararile’s reign was as colourful as it was exciting. The full culture of the Wonderful Oria- Abraka land was fully on display with dances, cheers, drinks and food was made available and modestly taken especially the drinks as the king upheld his strong faith in God and his beliefs for modesty and decency. The king and guests were of course present in church to given Thanksgiving of praises and this further shows the kind of kingdom he is running, one that pays attention to the things of God as they even organized general prayers by all citizens annually for the growth, protection and development of the kingdom. It indeed an excellent time of celebration, long live His Royal Majesty, Lucky Ochuko Ararile 1, Long live Umiaghwa-Abraka Kingdom, Delta state and indeed Nigeria.

Leveraging Trust as Catalyst for Economic Growth
Oluwadamilola Olujide
Since the global economic meltdown triggered by the financial crisis which lasted from 2007 to 2008, the world may not have returned fully to the era of abundance. The crisis, which is only comparable to The Great Depression of the 1930s, revealed that the world is connected beyond the economic hardship the situation brought on mankind.
The 1929 - 1932 crisis was reported to have caused a 15 per cent fall in Gross Domestic Product (GDP). If this is compared to the less than one per cent drop in worldwide GDP during the 2007 global economic meltdown, one can infer that the world had probably suffered fifteen times the economic calamity of the recent years.
Even though with milder effects and a much faster recovery rate, the distrust that followed the experience has kept business growth at a crawling rate. Likewise, human interactions have become suspicion-filled, owing to the fact that the economic collapse on both occasions, apart from being largely similar, are largely attributable to indiscretion, excessive risk-taking, regulatory and policy errors, failure to honour loan repayment obligations and other human surfeits.
For these reasons, businesses have decidedly become insular and mounted barriers to sequester them from incidents and accidents. This paints a picture of our business environment and reflects the pervasive attitude in the economic climate. The trust deficit is as high as the sky. So, extra-caution is limiting our leap into adventure and innovation.
From the time when the world came-out of the recession, business growth has been really lean, with a record extra-ordinary regional recovery in Asia. In the last fourteen years or so, systems and frameworks that may help our economies and businesses resist breakdowns have sprung up. Logically, these should ordinarily boost our confidence and inspire greater strides in our endeavours.
But the gaps created by the misalignment of soft issues, especially trust building and confidence restoration, have not allowed complete optimisation of the technology and strategies deployed to improve economies and businesses around the world. So far, businesses are acting like humans are not at the centre of business operations and unwittingly ignoring the place of emotions, trust as well as perception.
In today’s fiercely competitive market landscape, where consumers are bombarded with an abundance of choices, building, and maintaining trust has emerged as a pivotal
factor for business success. In the digital age, where information flows freely and opinions are shared instantaneously, establishing a trustworthy brand has become more challenging yet more essential than ever before.
Trust is the licence an organisation earns to grow, and the foundation that allows it take responsible risk, and, if it makes mistakes, to rebound from them. For a business, especially, lasting trust is the strongest insurance against competitive disruption, the antidote to consumer indifference, and the best path to continued growth. Brand trust serves as a potent catalyst for business growth and credibility, fostering customer loyalty, driving sales, and enhancing reputation.
Business growth and sustenance in our highly complex socioeconomic environment requires a new thinking and approach that is centred around building trust. Businesses or individuals that are able to drive authenticity, consistency, transparency and create a social reality that position them as value creators, solution providers and partners in progress are most likely going to become the big deal.
When consumers perceive a brand as genuine and reliable, they are more likely to develop a sense of trust. Authenticity entails staying true to the brand’s values and promises, while consistency ensures that every interaction with the brand reinforces a positive perception. Transparency, on the other hand, involves being open and honest about products, services, and business practices.
Building brand trust requires a concerted effort across all touchpoints of the customer journey. From the first point of contact to post-purchase support, every interaction shapes the perception of the brand. Consistently delivering high-quality products or services, providing exceptional customer service, and actively engaging with consumers are vital elements in nurturing trust.
Moreover, in an era dominated by social media and online reviews, brands must actively listen to customer feedback and address concerns promptly. Responding to queries and resolving issues in a transparent and empathetic manner do not only demonstrate accountability, but also strengthen trust and loyalty.
Understanding the importance of brand trust leads to the question of how does this directly impacts business growth?
Firstly, it fosters customer loyalty, encouraging repeat purchases and long-term relationships. Loyal customers not only spend more but also serve as brand advocates, who spread positive word-of-mouth and that attracts new customers.
Secondly, trusted brands command a price premium. Consumers are often willing to pay a higher price for products or services from brands they trust, as they perceive them to offer superior quality, reliability, and value.
Thirdly, brand trust mitigates the impact of negative events
or crises. When a trusted brand faces challenges, such as product recalls or controversies, consumers are more likely to give the brand the benefit of the doubt and remain loyal.
Furthermore, brand trust contributes to a positive reputation, which enhances brand equity and attracts top talent and business partners. A strong reputation built on trust can open doors to new opportunities and collaborations, further fuelling business growth. By this, there is a need for organisations - public or private, and individuals of note, to invest in building trust by methodically managing their interactions with the publics.
Several companies have exemplified the power of brand trust in driving business growth. For instance, tech giant Apple has cultivated a fiercely loyal customer base through its commitment to innovation, design excellence, and customer experience. Despite premium pricing, Apple continues to dominate market share in various product categories due to its unwavering focus on delivering products that consistently meet or exceed customer expectations.
Similarly, Denmark consistently ranks high in global surveys measuring trust in government institutions. The Scandinavian country is known for its strong welfare state, low levels of corruption, transparent governance, and high levels of citizen engagement. Danish citizens have confidence in their government’s ability to deliver public services effectively, maintain social welfare programs, and uphold democratic values. Also, countries like Norway, Sweden, Finland, and Switzerland are often cited for their high levels of trust in government.

Orits Williki: Reggae Music Not Dead, It Has Metamorphosed
Orits Williki, the ‘Mubalamumbe’ crooner is a Nigerian reggae musician who became famous following the success of his 1989 record, Tribulation. This was followed by Conqueror, which he released in 1990. In this interview, he says he wants to be remembered as someone who fought the system without attracting violence, but through music. According to Pupa Williki, music is more powerful than the bullet or the sword. He also argues that reggae music is not dead but has evolved over time, just as he appeals that the genre of music should be given more airplay and publicity in order to address some of the socio-economic challenges confronting the nation today. Obinna Chima and Ferdinand Ekechukwu bring the excerpts:
What’s new with Orits Wiliki and what has been happening around your career?
What’s new? Everything is new. I don’t believe in aging. I just believe that you continue to do our best, giving the required energy to carry it along. So, I consider everything I do new because every day is a new experience. Right now I’m pushing the new job I released in December 2023. I released a 20 songs album. So, I’m pushing each of the songs on its own merit. That’s what I want to do for now and trying to shoot videos for some of them too. Yahweh is the one I’m pushing since February. Then couple with that, I have some young stars; I wish I have the kind of capital I need to push some crazy talents that I come across all the time. It hurts me that you have all these talents around you; some of them looking up to you to see what you could do for them or how much you be able to assist them. But given the situation in the country everything is really tight. Gone are the days when we have record companies that will take the bills off you, but now we have to spend the whole money and do it ourselves.
Can you take us back to the past, why did you take up music as a career?
I have always known that I was either going to be an actor or a musician. Good enough, I started by being an actor. I started as early as eight years, not professionally. As a small boy of eight years, I was already enlisted in the church choir. I was in the church choir doing the little I could as a little boy. In fact, I grew up in that choir to become the choir master (laughs), you understand. So, interestingly that was at Baptist Church in Benin. By that time, I was leaning towards music, I already knew that I was going to be either one of the two. But most interestingly, my father was also a musician. A musician in the sense that he played a couple of instruments; he was a Baptist minister. And each time he holds his campaign rallies, we have music to play. He was very fantastic with the accordion, a musical instrument. So, I think the whole thing started from that point. Until he left for Zion, because he left so early at about 48 or 49 years. And by the time he left I knew some of the places he had taken us through, some of the interiors of Edo, Delta, Ondo, Anambra, some of the places he took us to. He was always travelling and we were always moving with him. The good thing he was doing then as a pastor, which I see differently these days is that he plants a church, appoints somebody to take over from that point. He never comes back. He only goes back through monitoring to know how the brethren are doing and how the church was going. Unlike these days. He planted over 27 Baptist churches. I realise that things are not the way it was with Christianity then, otherwise, with 27 churches today’s style of churches, you will be waiting for tithes to be coming in every day Sunday and all that and then you would be bearing the big name General Overseer and General that. So, he was not interested in all of that. Sometime I look around me and I say can I find any other man that behaves like my father? Actually, Church of God Mission was started by Bishop Idahosa and himself. Yes! So when things fell apart, he refused to tell us what
Orits Wiliki
actually went wrong. Till he died he never told us. He just told us one day that henceforth, we will be worshipping at Baptist Church. I was very sad because I thought of how I was going to miss the equipment, the instrument and all that. So, we tried to probe him to tell us why he just took such a decision, he never told us. It started as New Life for Modern Men, as an organisation. That was the first name they had before they started going into church of God Mission and all of that. Then we used to be in a very small place in Benin. From there they moved to Iyaro and from there they moved to their permanent site. I was following him and when he left, I just believed I can actually begin where he stopped you know, using music. I reasoned that he was reaching out to fewer people through open air campaign rallies, but I believed that with music I was going to reach out to more people. That propelled me and I said having made up my mind, what platform can I really express myself doing music, so I found reggae very available. Through reggae I can express myself spiritually because reggae music is a highly spiritual music. It was a platform I
believed I was going to express myself very well. So I chose that.
But today, we don’t seem to have famous reggae artists again apart from oldies like you. What do you think is the reason?
They are everywhere. But they are not pronounced. It’s tougher this time compared to the past. Let me put it like this, in our days you need to just have a demo and you begin to look for record companies that can sign you on and if you are lucky you got signed on, they take responsibility of every other thing. Many succeeded with that, many didn’t succeed. But there was a platform. By the time we saw the platform also going the other way, we realised that piracy was everywhere, so the record companies all started checking out. Sony Music checked out, Polygram checked out, EMI checked out, Tabansi was neither here nor there at that time. Majek released his first album on Tabansi Records. When all these started falling down and we started to see that those that took over, for example, Premiere, we realised that there was a big difference between the way they were handling the artists and the way hardcore professionals who would got signed on to were doing. Under Polygram, you are forwarded
every 90 days a statement of how your job was doing. Even if you don’t have any money to collect, you have continuous and consistent supply of how your job was doing. But when Polygram left, for like nearly nine to 10 years, Premiere Music for example couldn’t account for sales of our works to the artists until I started fighting them. When I started fighting them, they sent an apology, and then sent me a cheque which was very laughable and I disagreed because I didn’t agree with their accounting system and I didn’t believe that what they were giving me was actually what it was and because of that I said I was going to terminate the contract. Hitherto, you see that most of our artists signed blind contract. We realised that there was slavery mentality in some of the contracts or most of the contracts that were signed. So, in some of those contracts you found out that the artist would continue to owe the company like forever. For example, if they spend about N2 million that time to put your job out, they will have to make that N2 million back first before you are entitled to anything through your own royalty which would be maybe 30 kobo. You need to set 30 kobo to be able to make up N2 million before you now start getting your own royalty. So, you would realise that all the artists were owing the company like forever and

nobody was making money from them in terms of royalty. What was available was just you going on live shows and all that and it pained me that some of us signed those contracts. But then you see when you think you are smart, you will be smarter. We looked through the clauses and everything in the contract, I saw some of the boggle-traps I told them I do not agree with some. There was an addendum to my own contract. So by the time I told them we should leave or we should cancel the contract they told me I should realise they own and control my works for the next 25years and until its 25 years, I can’t do any business with my business. So I was patience until it was 27 years and I told them I want my job returned back to me since they couldn’t give account. They said no they owe it for life that there’s a clause in the contract that talks about perpetuity. Eventually we went to court and I won them and I was awarded damages. They also have sent us an appeal which we are not afraid to follow because we know they are going to end up with the same result because of the inconsistency in the contract. So, some of us do all of these things you can imagine the story I’m telling you now. When you now see younger ones who are so blessed and talented where do they go to? Nowhere. Our own label that we also have here how much capital do we have to actually push? In our days with N1.5 million, to N2 million you can cover the whole Nigeria with promo. But now I can assure you that N10 million it’s not enough for Lagos State alone. So it’s a tough time for upcoming ones. But thank God for the internet. The internet helps you to express yourself. It is when you have proven yourself online that somebody will be interested in you. All these are the things I’m doing. And like I said I just released two artists and I’m also helping to push. That’s why I said everything is new.
On the issue of the court judgment, certain amount of money was awarded to you?
I asked for a N100 million, the court awarded me N50 million.
In a way, you were not satisfied with the N50 million?
I am not satisfied. The reason I’m not satisfied was because they went above what our agreements were. They knowingly or unknowingly started acting as my publisher. They were publishing my music at different companies abroad and making money. I didn’t know until one of them contacted me directly and said they want to sign me on a particular two tracks, but that Premiere is claiming the ownership of those songs. I said they cannot claim ownership. My contract with them had expired. That’s how I told my contact abroad to go on a research and discover different companies they were selling my products to in hard currency and I’m here, you are not telling me anything. When I put all that together, more facts came, otherwise I would have been asking for N500 million. But then again can they pay N500 million? I don’t think so. The most important thing is to prove a point even if they didn’t award me any money. But to prove to them that yes cannot be a slave master forever. Sometime the slave will also grow up.
Each of your songs comes with a story. Where do you draw inspiration from and you said you have 20 songs in your latest album, can you tell us about some of them?
They are all religious songs actually; they are all gospel, a double album. The primary reason why I went into it was to also continue the message where my father stopped and in doing that, I continue to rely on the word of God. My inspiration comes from two major points: God the creator of the Heavens and of the Earth and everything therein and secondly, I hate oppression. I hate poverty. Anytime I see anybody oppressed it is like you put my spirit in the mood of writing, especially when it comes to Nigeria where we are experiencing injustice every day; police brutality, political robbery, political looting and all that. And then you begin to wonder. Some time I just said, ok if we bring Americans, if we can strike a deal with us and say ok Joe Biden, we want you guys to come and take over Nigeria, while we move to America. I’m sure they will be happy for it; they will be happy because they know that in 10 years if they are here they would do better with what we have here and if we go there in two years, we will be worse because the level of greed and corruption in our system is something else. So, you begin to look for a better tomorrow. You are looking to a better tomorrow because you have indices to ascertain that. But when there are no indices to even check and project that this country would be better than it is now then we have a problem because every time a new government comes in, people clap their hands and say yes, now we got it. In three months, you begin to miss the previous one you thought was bad. That’s
the way I grew up in this country knowing. That’s why I wrote that song, ‘Is it when I’m dead?’ When are those better days coming? So my head is filled with writing all the time because I see things and it hurt badly because I cannot do much. This generation has their eyes but they don’t see; they have their ears but they can’t hear. So, were they that crucified Jesus not knowing what they were doing. When I look at everything around me it put my mind in the state of writing all the time because we are really passing through hard times.
So, the new album?
This album is actually gospel afro. And when six years ago I decided to just go gospel, but still reggae, some people were like gospel? I said yes, I have been playing gospel all the time but because its reggae, some of you are biased. You don’t care to listen to what I’m saying. Yes, I’m a pan-Africanist, I’m a revolutionist, I am also a gospel artist. So, if you listen to all my songs: From Conqueror to Tribulation, they are all gospel. So, I read the bible very well. And that is my power. This album is like emphasising that all you have been hearing me play was reggae music but gospel. Spiritually motivated songs and sometimes when I perform them I do ministration and move from church to church. When I perform you see people are moved spiritually.
What do you think about the quality of music we have today and can you do a comparison between Afrobeats and reggae?
You cannot compare them because both of them have different blood, but one soul. It’s like comparing your own children. Reggae did so much for the youth when it was given the adequate publicity. What you have at the moment is a systemic problem because they don’t get to play enough of the reggae music. We have so many good reggae music around because when we go on tour, they play and they perform you would wonder how you wish these children could have some of the opportunities that we artist had. That’s the reggae artists. They are so many lying down in radio houses and TV houses.
Some of have even argued that reggae music is dead?
No! Reggae cannot die. Reggae has also evolved too. Reggae music as you knew it as the traditional root-rock reggae music has metamorphosed into a different style and pattern which is hip-pop. If you listened to Bob Marley, you would see that in his late days, his tempo had fastened up. It was changing with time as well and was no longer the slow groove music that he used to play. It had to move with the time. And so reggae music has also metamorphosed into hip-pop. They have a very close culture. The only different is that where one is highly spiritual, the other one is highly protesting. Hip-pop is for protest; it’s protest music. So, our way of life might seem the same but they are not actually the same. When you say reggae is dead, no, reggae is not dead. It is existing in another new life; in another new body. But afrobeats, when they continue to say afrobeat and afrobeats I laugh. I laugh because afrobeat is one. Afrobeats is afrobeat as produced by Fela Anikulapo-kuti. He is the originator of that music, you understand. Yes, kudos to our children who have been able to research into that kind of music and came up with new beat. I give kudos to them for being able to do that. But you now look at the contents. The contents are not contents that you may think would stand the test of time. And that is why if you go and play ‘Tribulation’, my song I
released over 30 years ago, its talking about now. And some of the youths I asked one the other day, how will you explain to your grandchild when you are age 90 years, when your grandchildren are flocking around you and they say ‘daddy, what were you saying in this your song then? Will you be able to feel comfortably to talk about boobs, pants, you know booty, drugs and dollars to your children? Whatever you are doing now is just for the time. It’s not something I think will last till such moment. People like Davido are a little different. If you listen to Davido’s music it’s more of culture, heritage. From the percussions to what he will sing about he is a little more philosophical than a lot of the others. A lot of the others are just talking anything once the beat is there, it’s okay. And I also project that he (Davido) will last longer than all of them because he has originality.
What about your assessment of the likes of Burna Boy, Wizkid and the quality of their music? Burna Boy is very creative. He can make something out of nothing. I will give it to him he’s versatile. It takes a creative mind to do some of the things he’s doing. You will see that he takes a little flip from here and he will turn it to something else. For me, I would not see much originality like I would see in Davido for example. So that’s how I differentiate them. Wizkid he’s also very good in his own style you know. But you see Wizkid is more like wanting to be in the eyes of the global media. So he’s pushing himself more to the international audience and in doing that, he loses some of the values of the traditional thing that we have here, you understand, because he’s working towards the projection and acceptability of these people. By doing that, you will forget the ingredients, the elements that reflect in the music. All in all, they are all brilliant. I love them all.
Considering the perception that reggae is dead. What kind of support do you think should be given to reggae?
Give them airplay. Because when we had good airplay, there was not much cultism in the system and they were not going into drugs like you see now. It was not so in our days because we had healthy contents. If you preach violence on our airwaves now if all the radio stations decide to play violence-motivating songs for three months you will see what will happen. It is the media that controls what the youth react to. Today, if you don’t have money they are not going to play your songs.
With what you see in the industry today, do you have any regret taking up music as a career?
No. I will do it over again and over again because we went into the profession not because of money.
First is the calling. When you have a calling that makes you happy, a calling that you know if you are doing this thing you are doing it with joy, you are passionate about it, then money becomes secondary. But one good thing about music is that if you don’t make the money now, don’t cry, the money is somewhere, don’t stop, continue to work. Bob Marley died with over four million pounds in his account and one year after, it rose significantly to over $750 million. Fela, when he was alive some were mocking him. But the day Fela died, the following year, you saw what happened? Did you see the millions that rolled in? That is the life of musicians and music. So, you never really die. When you stop working, the works that you had, people like Rex Lawson, IK Dairo, they are still making good money today through their foreign repertoire. For you to get discouraged because you are not making
the money now, then you didn’t have the calling. If you have the calling, you will continue to work. You met working in the studio. I’m still working. Bob Marley did something that I really love and I emulate him and I’m copying that. Bob Marley, 10 years after he died they were still releasing his jobs as if he was still alive. I want to beat that record. I want to be able to lease my job even 20 years after, like I’m still here. So, just keep recording.
So in a way you have so many songs recorded but unreleased?
Oh! If you go to my archive you will be shocked.
Like how many songs at the moment?
As I’m sitting down here I have not less than 100 songs I have not even constructed the lyrics. I have 150 and I have released over 160 songs (the new album inclusive). So I will continue to pile my archive.
You did mention of Bob Marley earning more after death. That has to do with royalties. Compared to what we have here in our country do artists really get royalties because a couple of times we see some of them here struggling to make ends meet?
Yes, they do get. Don’t forget I’m also the chairman of the Musical Copyright Society of Nigeria (MCSN), that was why I never relegate fighting for this particular structure to begotten. It took us nearly over 20 years fighting, going to court and that, getting intimidated at a time by the regulatory body. But we said no. this is our lives, this is our right. It is called intellectual property. It’s my right. I can decide to give it to a dog to manage. I can decide to give it to a monkey to manage. The government doesn’t have any role. It’s just like when I build my estate. If build my estates, the government mustn’t come to me to decide who to give it to manage. No, they have no right. It’s me that would decide. And that’s why we told them they should liberalise the industry. Just having one society doesn’t give us a choice. And they thought otherwise. This was a battle we fought. But thank God, it’s all over now. Structures are falling place and I know that given what we are putting on ground now, in the next five years, artist should be getting their cheques like you get abroad every quarter. Last year we distributed not less than N5.7 million among all the artists, even though its small. Like this year we want to be able to do more. If we have the structures working well and everybody getting his cheque quarterly, why will you have a problem of taking care of yourself? And we are not talking of just Nigeria. Anywhere your job is played outside the shores of this country, MCSN is there to pick up your money for you.
Which among your contemporaries are you closed to and how do you draw inspiration from each other?
My contemporaries, some of them are dead. From Majek, I worked in Majek’s album, the very first one. I worked in Ras Kimono’s album. I worked in Alex O’s album. I worked in Isaac Black’s album. I worked with almost all of them; Chris Mba and the rest. Every one of them has had a bit of me in their music, either co-producing or co-arranging or arranging the percussions and all of that. So, I am very close to almost all of them. And that’s why they call me Pupa. But I was closest to Ras Kimono than the rest. So that’s why they call us Siamese twins. So we really were very close and his death affected me a lot.
What would you like to be remembered for?
I want to be remembered for somebody who fought the system without attracting violence through music. Music is more powerful than the bullet. Music is more powerful than the sword. You can use music for whichever way you want to use it; positively or negatively. Today, music is used as a therapy for healing in the civilised word. You don’t use needle because music is played in a particular realm. The chords, interpretation, are in particular different realms. If I want to sing about love, I need to employ those chords to express the words. When you marry them together, it must touch your heart. I can make you cry. I can make you so emotionally that you begin to wonder. You will be so neck deep in listening to what I’m saying. There are some dangerous songs you can write and put in the perfect words people will hear it and they would want to pick up. In the bible when there was Canaan war in Jericho you realized there was no gunshot, no sword, it was just music. Just trumpet and the walls of Jericho came down and the people ran away and then Israel took over. So music can be used for a lot of other things. I want to be remembered as one who used music to attack the system without employing violence.

Concerns over Proliferation of Thugs on Lagos Streets
Lagos State is witnessing a threatening security situation with the proliferation of thugs in various neighbourhood of the state. More worrisome is the fact that these non-state actors extort citizens boldly in the presence of security operatives and cannot be tamed. Sunday Ehigiator and Esther Oluku write that the increasing number of hoodlums pose more security threats to the people and government of the state
If you are a visitor or resident of Nigeria’s commercial epicenter, Lagos State, all you need to do is to observe the corners and junctions of any neighborhood to find young men with daring faces gathered who share a bond of brotherhood.
They are the ‘men’ a.k.a ‘Egbon Adugbo’ (area brothers) of the neighborhood. They are always outdoors. They know every security information in the neighbourhood and can be friendly to get favours from passersby. They routinely do not have a job but depend on charity from generous neighbors to make ends meet. In local parlance, these men are regarded as agberos and the charity given them could be variously described as mule (drop it).
Their disposition is generally defensive. As a visitor or unfamiliar resident in the neighbourhood, you dare not look them in the eye, your car dare not break down along the road, you dare not bring out your phone to take a call at night or in traffic as you may have to part with your property in the process and be forced to part with your hard earned money to bail it.
They are cold and bold. But if you are street smart and could part with a few naira notes while speaking with them as a son of the soil, chances are that you may have secured a soft spot in the mind of the men for the rest of your stay.
Lagosians Cry for Help
However, some residents of Lagos who spoke with THISDAY, decried the current state of their neighbourhoods where they now live in fear of hoodlums who brazenly threaten their lives and safety unless they can constantly part ways with valuables.
Narrating a close ordeal, a Lagosian, simply identified as Ms. Imisi narrated that; “we kept calling a crew member of ours and he was forced to pick his phone on the streets of Agege and suddenly eight boys gathered him brandishing weapons. This happened at 9:30am. People were passing and everybody ignored him.
“They were pushing him around and telling him that they would stab and kill him and nothing would happen. He ended up parting with N5,000.
“This is a country and a state that has law and security. These boys are claiming their relatives are in power. We are begging because these boys are becoming brazen attacking people in broad day light, exploiting and threatening people. I am begging the governor to help us nip this menace. As it is it is a whirlwind but soon it would become a typhoon.”
In February, 2024, members of the Lagos State Trucks and Cargo Committee (LASTCOC) were hit hard by thugs during a face off which killed one truck motor boy, maiming and injuring many others.
In a press statement by LASTCOC, as sighted by THISDAY, it decried the accident while calling on the state government to come to its aid in sanitizing the port access raods of hoodlums.
Part of the statement read, “Our members came under heavy gun and cuttlass attack of miscreants/hoodlums generating revenue from traffic anarchy that is sabotaging Authorities effort to enhance traffic orderliness, trade facilitation and seamless evacuation of cargoes at the Tincan Port corridor.
“During the attack, a motor boy was shot dead by these miscreants while three others sustained matchet and bullet injuries.”
Another victim of thuggery who simply identified herself as Ms. Ngozi, in narrating her ordeal explained that she was accosted by thugs on her way from work under Cele bridge.
“I was returning from work with a colleague and the bus was heading to Mile 2. When we got to Cele, th bus was struggling for parking space and in the process, the tire got
burst so everybody had to find their way.
“We had not collected our change so we just stayed around to collect it from the conductor. Just then, these guys crossed from the other side of the express towards us. They had cutlasses and poles and asked that we give them our bags.
“We didn’t see it coming. I heard someone behind me telling me ‘madam, bring your phone,’ and before I could understand what’s up, one of the guys used one of the cutlass to bit my head.
“That was when I knew that this was serious. I gave them the bag. My colleague had his laptop and his phone. The took both our phones and his laptop. As we went home, we just look for a way to block our accounts.”
UN’s Urbanisation and Violence Theory
The United Nations (UN) attributed the rise of criminality in urban areas to a challenge characteristic with the evolution and rise of cities in erstwhile rural areas or the springing up of new cities in developing nations.
Issues as the capitalist dream of wider opportunities for self-sufficiency, availability of modern infrastructure to aid business growth and the promise of better welfare has led to the over population of cities with inherent security risks posed by theThis challenge also presents the reality of a survival of the fittest mantra among new immigrants where only the strongest can survive.
According to a UN Habitat study, changing social norms which rule out gender roles of women as caregivers and open up avenues for both genders to work and earn and aspire towards
career professionalism, also cause a shift in families as many working urban parents may not have time to care for their children.
These children may feel neglected and take to the streets for comfort.A multi-dimensional approach to curbing urban criminality would include; grassroots policing and alternative grassroots justice system, youth, women and children engagement, and promoting an environment which discourages criminality in general.
Thuggery as Feature of 2023 Election Campaign in Lagos
The problem of the security implications of thuggery occupied a central place in the 2023 Lagos gubernatorial election with candidates promising to put a decisive end to the menace if elected.
A strong opposition to the incumbent government and the gubernatorial candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Gbadebo Rhodes Vivour, had canvassed the need to completely erase thugs from Lagos roads saying that it not only de-markets the state in the eyes of investors but is a serious threat to safety of lives and properties.“We need to ensure that the state sets a policy on not accepting the ‘agbero’ (thug) system which is not system that has created a lot of bottlenecks and a lot of safety hazards in lagos state.
“You can only enforce when a system is moving smoothly. We are also have digital surveillance across the state so that we can enforce with evidence.”
On his part, the incumbent governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu, during his campaign also condemned thuggery and vowed to meaningfully engage these youths to make them more productive in society, if elected.
However, the rising cases of thuggery and in some cases violent attack on innocent residents of Lagos should be a concern to the Sanwo-Olu-led government. The Lagos State government should take decisive steps to protect the citizens and those involved in all forms of criminalities and violent activities should be made to face the law. Lagos, unarguably is Nigeria’s gateway to foreign investments and insecurity in any form should not be allowed to fester.
Enugu Monitoring Team Pays Surprise Visit to Ezeagu Council Hqts, Issues Queries to Absentees
The Enugu State Monitoring Team on Work Attendance and Productivity has paid an unscheduled visit to the Ezeagu Local Government headquarters at Aguobu-Owa where they issued queries to absentee council workers and also read the riot act to civil servants in the state.
The team was received by the Chief Executive Officer, Administration, at the council, Mrs. Lorita Akwuchie.
The unscheduled visit followed a video, which went viral on the social media, recently, showing the local government headquarters deserted on Friday, April 5, contrary to the directive by the Dr. Peter
Mbah Administration to civil servants in the state to revive productivity by working five days in a week.
The Mbah Administration is currently undertaking a staff audit of local government councils as it emerged that many of the people on the payroll, who also transit to the state’s pension payroll, do not come to work at all, while many others live outside the state and the country even as they draw salaries and other benefits from the local government system.
However, the voice-over in the viral video narrated that no single staff was found on duty, a development that has drawn the wrath of the
government and the general public.
Taking a tour of all the offices and departments in the council headquarters, the team, which comprised the Head of Service, Mr. Kenneth Ugwu; Principal Secretary to the Governor, Mr. Ken Chukwuegbo; Chairman, Enugu State Chapter of the Trade Union Congress (TUC), Comrade Ben Asogwa; and the Chairman, Joint Public Service Negotiating Council, Comrade Ezekiel Omeh, among others, met only 36 out of the over 200 council workers.
According to a statement, the team vowed that the acts of negligence and absence from
duty without permission by the council workers would not go unpunished and reminded civil servants across the state that productivity remained the watchword in the Governor Peter Mbah Administration.
The Head of Service, Ugwu, who led the Monitoring Team directed that queries be issued to all the council workers not found on duty. “As you are aware, the administration is carrying out a diligent audit of local government workforce in the state. The standard is that you must not only come to work, you must also have assigned responsibilities and proof of fulfilling them. We are also introducing electronic clock-in. The watchword is productivity because that is the only way to build our economy from $4.4bn to $30bn because every segment of the society and every arm and every organ of government must contribute its quota for that growth to be possible,” Ugwu said.

Ekpo Niboro Atan Abam: Reviving Cultural Symbol of Wealth
Ogbu
Atan Abam is a bubbly village in Abam clan known for their bravery and never say die spirit. It is one of the 27 villages that make up Abam clan in Arochukwu Local Government Area of Abia State. Being one of the biggest and most populous, it has always pulled its weight in bravery and commerce, making a name for itself during the wars and also boasts of rich cultural heritage. Apparently, the quest to conquer and dominate its environ- ment which is mostly thick forests foisted fearlessness on its natives...they always dare.
Of all approaches to Atan Abam, you must pass a river or stream which naturally tuned their mind to exploiting what is in the waters in fishing and use of the alluvial deposits of severely rivers and it’s tributaries for extensive farming having been bestowed with flat arable lands. They produce rice, garri, yam, vegetables, pepper, cocoyam, rice and too many cash crops.
One of its natural gifts is the Igwu River, said to have its source at Ugwueke Alayi coursing through other Abam villages like Ndi Ebe, Ozu, Idima, Ndi Agwu, Atan, Ahuma, Ndi Oji through Ndi Okereke before exiting Abam to Akwa Ibom State while snaking its way to Calabar and emptying into the Atlantic Ocean. How among all the villages it passes through, only Atan saw it as trade route to Calabar speaks to their resourcefulness.Men were said to have been using wooden boats to load goods as happens presently in loading containers for export and import today and paddled wares from Atan Abam to Calabar and other popular trade posts in Akwa Ibom like Ikot Essien, Ikot Obioko, Mbiakong, Ntundang, Etim Ekpo and Ikot Offiong among others. Ikpe, Onanamong, Mkpu were considered home markets as Atan borders present day Ikono local Government of Akwa Ibom, so the kick was farther markets which boasted of higher profits.
There is no gain saying that embarking on such expeditions required physical and mental grits and only those strong and wealthy men took a shot at the opportunities. To ensure they suffered less loses through underwater obstacles capsizing their boats which two categories were the epepe, a wooden version of flying boats and okoboro, the big wares carrying type that houses everything such journey required, they had to clear the river of obstacles in what present day technology would call dredging.
Merchants from Atan and other traders especially from Abiriba in present day Ohafia Local Government and some Edda men from Ebonyi who had opened trading posts in the village like Onuasu Abiriba and Quarter Edda combined efforts with Atan merchants and physically cleared the obstacles, mostly with underwater explosives with which they blew off big trees and rocks on the route.
People had to be great paddlers using adam as akpara ogugu becomes useless in bigger water depths. Younger men learning the route and trade often were assigned menial jobs like bailing water from the boats and running other errands. The trade brought enormous wealth to Atan Abam.
After their yearly expeditions when they choose times to rest and celebrate their successes, they birthed the Ekpo Niboro also called Ugbo Mmirima. It is a masquerade with three faces, a man and two ladies which the masquerade constantly boasts it acquired (married) in his trading expeditions.
At inception, only the brave merchants participated and used the opportunity to demonstrate the frills and thrills of the journey. Whereas the rich merchants and owners of the business like present day apprenticeship, deck themselves opulently; their workers or boys strain to paddle and take the boats to shore. In the process, they mimic the hazards, eating habits which has to be fast and furious, moulding big balls and swallowing easily with rich fisherman’s soup. This was the practice before and shortly after the war till late 70s.
Drums doling out certain beats announced that the masquerade which usually came out to celebrate a dead member or seasonally was on its way. On the third round, the masquerade now armed with a sword out of its scabbard to demonstrate its readiness for battle would appear. It often challenges any man that crosses its path to a wrestling bout which it always prevailed after which in a gutteral voice boasts of its exploits on several expeditions.
Ete Oru, Chief Ojukwu was synonymous with Ekpo Niboro, a calm semi bald headed man, soft spoken but tough. Stories had it that he once slapped a trouble maker and he ate grass. He also used to give herbs and roots which cured a range of ailments and infections. Long before he died, the masquerade stopped coming out and the Calabar route through the river also was no longer in use, moreoso with better and shorter roads. Another thing is that the wealth through the Igwu River brought its own tragedies to the village. When the Biafran war broke out, merchants from Atan ran back home leaving their wares but information came that the Biafrans had cleared their trading areas and that they should come and carry their goods they left behind when federal troops landed. Unknown to them, it was a decoy and everyone who went on that journey except one were killed. The village lost all its millionaires in
one fell swope and after the war, the river route closed.
After many years, Chief Chijioke James, Ike Abam
yerubi, the Ikike of Etiti Abam, like his progenitors worked his way assiduously to wealth and remembered the symbol of wealth which had died and was forgotten. He chose and decided to revive the Ekponiboro or Ugbo Mmirima which signified the wealth of the community. He muted the idea and in his characteristic style, did the underground work, formed committees, publicised it in the airwaves and fixed a time for it. The response was overwhelming and that dying cultural heritage was revived just like he has personally and at great cost, resuscitated many dead projects in the village.
It is not only Atan Abam that has had its developmental face changed, the cultural revival also benefitted.
The 2024 version which took place on March 30, 2024 recorded unprecedented attendance and like the masquerade use to attract dignitaries and merchants from far and wide, it once more attained and surpassed the toga of its real self.
First, Ike Abam went down to the Igwu River at Ihu egede down from Asa Road across the bailey bridge, paddling like his ancestors before coming to the Community Primary School field, Atan Abam where canopies had been set and public address system readied for the occasion.
With the sounding of the drum announcing the masquerade was ready to come out to the enthusiastic crowd and fleet of expensive vehicles dropping guests from far and wide, blending with the fleet of Ike Abam made the village look like where latest automobiles were on display. Dignitaries apparently had been hinted that Ugbo Mmirima is a celebration of success and opulence and were so decked. The masquerade itself was not left out as it looked new and
costlier in apparels. It vene donned a new head with the two wives looking more elegant.
The spirit of Ete Oru Anyim (Akpafrikang) would from his grave, give his usual wry smile in approval of the sustainance of his trade and culture. The usual steps of the masquerade were regal, its appearance opulent and malevolent powers unmistakably oscillating from entertainment to trepidation.
Guests led by Governor Alex Otti, flanked by his deputy, Ikechukwu Emetu, Secretary to the State Government, Abia State, Prof. Kenneth Kalu, Speaker of Abia State Assembly, Hon Emmanuel Emeruwa, Leader of the House or Assembly, Hon Uchenna Okoro, Minister of State for Labour, Hon. Nkeirika Onyejeocha, Hon. Ibe Okwara Osonwa and Dr. Agbai Eke Agbai among others were on hand to soak it’s entertainment. Chairman of the occasion was the Executive Secretary Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (NEITI) Dr. Orji Ogbonnaya Orji who attested to the rich culture and commended its rebirth.
Ndi Eze in Abam and beyond and various age grades were on display all dressed to the occasion while demonstration of how our ancestors use to go through thorn and toil to make wealth were displayed. However, Chief Dan Okere Arunsi who as a child followed one of the trade expeditions and was assigned the duty of bailing water from the boat also graced the occasion. A retired Director in Ministry of Finance, he recounted how torturous and exhilarating the journey used to be and expressed gratitude that Ike Abam did not allow the memory to die.
Apart from cultural entertainment, people had the best of food and drinks while various media houses conspicuously registered their presence as testament that Ekpo Niboro has transited from a masquerade to a festival and is well on its way to becoming a carnival.

Victor Boniface Beautiful Bride of Serie A Giants
He took the season by storm, scoring 16 goals and nine assists in 25 appearances for Bayer Leverkusen before injury cut short his campaign. As the season is winding down,Victor Boniface is already causing a storm in faraway Italy as two SerieA giants -AC Milan and Juventus, are scrambling for the signature of the Nigeria international
With Olivier Giroud set to join LAFC at the end of his contract in June and Bologna forward, Joshua Zirkzee’s asking price out of reach, AC Milan have identified Bayer Leverkusen striker, Victor Boniface as their number one alternative.
Zirkzee, who is also eligible to play for the Nigerian Super Eagles due to his Nigerian heritage through his mother was Milan’s primary target for next season but the striker’s price tag is out of reach of Milan’s budget, the Rossoneri have turned their attention to Nigeria striker, Boniface.
According to Gazzetta, Bologna could be looking for a €75m sale for Zirkzee, the same sum paid by Manchester United to sign Rasmus Hojlund a year ago.
19-time Serie A champions, AC Milan, are set to lock horns with several other clubs as they eye Nigerian attacker as an alternative to Zirkzee.
Boniface joined Bayer Leverkusen from Union Saint-Gilloise for a fee in the region of €20 million and has proven his worth in his first season at the German club, scoring a total of 16 goals and making eight assists so far.
However, earlier reports revealed that former Serie A champions, Juventus, are monitoring Boniface’s situation at Bayer Leverkusen and could attempt to sign him if Dusan Vlahovic exits in the summer.
The Rossoneri could also be looking to sign the Nigerian after losing out on him in the last summer transfer window as they could not reach an agreement with the Super Eagles star, who was their long-term target.
Milan is primarily interested in Bologna star but his club is only willing to let him go for a reported fee of €75 million, which could force Milan to opt for a cheaper option if negotiations fall through between the two Serie A clubs.
Nonetheless, they have identified Boniface, who could reportedly cost them €50 million, setting up a battle between them and Juventus in the upcoming transfer window as they also vie for his signature.
Boniface is still tied with the Leverkusen outfit until June 2028, which means convincing offers would be needed from interested suitors to pry him away from Leverkusen.
Boniface was delighted to be back amongst the goals after missing a huge chunk of football since the turn of the year.
The 23-year-old was disappointed to be ruled out of Nigeria’s AFCON 2023 campaign in Ivory Coast as he suffered an adductor injury which kept him out of football for almost four months.
He made his return to the pitch in Leverkusen’s 4-0 win over Fortuna Dusseldorf in the DFB Pokal. He also
came off the bench in the club’s 1-0 over Union Berlin at the weekend before repeating his antics last night, but this time, grabbing Leverkusen’s second goal against West Ham United.
Speaking in the mixed zone, the Nigerian forward revealed his delight to be back on the scoresheet, and the hunger to make up for the time he missed due to injury.
“I feel happy, you know. It’s not easy considering I was out for about three months. I missed a lot of games, so coming back to help my team means a lot and I’m really happy to be playing football again. I’m looking forward to helping my team whenever I’m called upon, we have a big game on Sunday, so we’re looking forward to that,” the former Union Saint-Gilloise man told OmaSports TV.
Meanwhile, Bayer Leverkusen manager, Xabi Alonso has hailed Boniface whose impacts helped Leverkusen defeat West Ham.
Leverkusen continued their impressive campaign this season as they beat West Ham 2-0 in the first leg ot the Europa League on Thursday night.
Boniface came on in the 67th and Jonas Hofmann, who came with 13 minutes left, had given Leverkusen the lead on 83 minutes, before the Super Eagles added the second goal on 91 minutes.
It was Boniface’s first goal since
returning from a three months injury.
Speaking after the hard-fought win, Alonso singled out the substitutes for the role they played in the win.
“We are happy with the result and the performance,” Alonso said after the match.
“It was not an easy game to create chances in. They played very deep. We waited for our moment, it was a little late but the players from the bench had a big impact tonight.”
The Spaniard said he expects a different approach from West Ham in the return leg next Thursday.
“They will play very differently next week at home,” Alonso added. “They have nothing to lose. We have time to prepare and will be ready to fight for a place in the semi finals.”
Leverkusen have now gone 42 games unbeaten in all competitions this season. Up next for Leverkusen is this weekend’s Bundesliga home game against Werder Bremen.
A win for Leverkusen will see them clinch the Bundesliga title for the first time ever.
They are also in the running for the treble as they can add the Europa League and German Cup to the Bundesliga title.
For the German Cup, they will take on lower division outfit Kaiserslautern on May 5 inside the Olympiastadion in Berlin.

Spurs Take Top-four Target to St. James’ Park
Tottenham Hotspur will endeavour to consolidate their place in the top four of the Premier League when they travel to St James’Park to lock horns with European hopefuls, Newcastle United today’s lunchtime
The Magpies will be seeking revenge after they were put to the sword 4-1 by Spurs in the reverse fixture in North London four months ago.
After entering March’s international break with back-to-back defeats, Newcastle United have since collected seven points from their last three Premier League fixtures to boost their chances of securing at least a top-seven finish.
The Magpies were held to a 1-1 at home against Everton just a few days after claiming a thrilling 4-3 comeback victory over West Ham United, but they returned to winning ways last weekend when they edged past Fulham by a 1-0 scoreline at Craven Cottage.
Bruno Guimaraes scored nine minutes from time on his 100th appearance for Newcastle to secure maximum points for Eddie Howe’s side, who sit
eighth in the top-flight standings and just one point behind seventh-placed West Ham United, who have played a game more.
Newcastle, who are looking to win consecutive league games for the first time since December, will welcome a return to St James’ Park where they are unbeaten in their last five matches, scoring 14 goals in the process.
The Magpies will reminisce about their last home meeting with Spurs in April 2023 when they thumped the North Londoners 6-1, leading 3-0 after just nine minutes and 5-0 within the first 21 minutes. Repeating that success will be a tall order, but Tottenham’s recent away record - just two wins in their last nine - bodes well for Howe and co ahead of Saturday’s contest.
Although their form on the road is a cause for concern, Tottenham have now won eight of their last nine Pr emier League home games in North London, including last weekend’s 3-1 success over Nottingham Forest.
Spurs were made to work for all three points agai nst a spirited Forest outfit and were forced to enter half time level after their opener - an own goal from Murillo - was cancelled out by Chris Wood. However, defensive duo Micky van de Ven and Pedro Porro scored within the space of six second-half minutes to fire the Lilywhites to an important victory.
Tottenham have now scored 11 Premier League goals thr ough defenders so far this term, the joint-most in the division alongside rivals Arsenal, and their win over Forest helped them leapfrog Aston Villa into fourth s pot, now sitting above the fifth-placed Villains on goal difference with a game in hand. With just seven games left to play,
Ange Postecoglou has reiterated his
stance that he “couldn’t care less” about the race for fourth spot and instead wants to see signs of improvement in his squad, who are now gearing up for a challenging set of fixtures against Newcastle, Arsenal, Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester City.
Victory over Newcastle, whom they have beaten in four of their last six visits to St James’ Park, would provide Spurs with a huge boost ahead of a 15-day break in preparation for a potentially pivotal North London derby on home soil on April 28.
Meanwhile, four days on from their Champions League thriller in Madrid, Manchester City return to Premier League action when they face Luton Town at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The Citizens claimed an emphatic 6-2 away victory over the Hatters in the FA Cup just under two months ago, with Erling Haaland scoring five goals at K enilworth Road. Encounters between Man City and Real Madrid never cease to amaze and the football world was blessed with another absorbing goal-laden showdown between the two clubs on Tuesday when they shared the spoils in a rollercoaster 3-3 draw in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Santiago Bernabeu. Three seems to be the magic number for Pep Guardiola’s side; not only did they score three Champions League goals for the ninth successive game in midweek, but they also remain on course to retain each of the three trophies they lifted during a historic treble-winning campaign in 2022-23, although they are part of a three-way tussle for the Premier League title this time aro und and currently sit third in the table. With both second-placed Liverpool and leaders,
Arsenal playing on Sunday, Man City can momentarily climb to the Premier League summit and two points clear of their rivals with victory today against a Luton side whom they have already beaten twice away from home this season by an aggregate score of 8-3. A 2-1 win at Luton on December 12 began the Citizens’ current 16-game unbeaten run in the top flight, including 12 victories and four draws, and they will be confident of further success today as they make a welcomed return to the Etihad where they have not lost any of their last 40 games across all competitions, just two short of an all-time club record of 42 set between December 1919 and November 1921. Luton’s 10-game winless run in the Premier League, including seven defeats and three draws, came to an end last weekend when they secured a 2-1 comeback victory at home to Bournemouth.

PSG Pressure Chelsea with Lucrative Offer to Osimhen
The recent pursuit of Victor Osimhen’s signature by Paris Saint-Germain has sparked the suggestion that Chelsea FC is being placed under pressure to make a significant bid to sign the Nigerian attacker, Soccernet. ng reports.
The transfer saga surrounding Osimhen’s move away from the Stade Armando Diego Maradona Stadium is heating up, with both PSG and Chelsea vying for his signature.
Osimhen who has earlier labeled Didier Drogba as his role model in his career path has further solidify a potential
move to join the Blues who are vying sign a striker.
Meanwhile, the Parc Des Princes outfits seems to be making significant strides in their pursuit, reportedly one step away from securing the Nigerian striker’s services.
Napoli, on the other hand, seems open to negotiation, considering the inclusion of PSG players such as Kang-in Lee, Carlos Soler, Lucas Berlado or Marco Asensio in a potential deal to lower Osimhen’s €120m release clause.
While PSG is offering an attractive four-year deal, Osimhen
reportedly prefers a move to the Premier League, where the London side has shown interest.
However, Chelsea’s hesitation to take concrete steps in acquiring Osimhen’s services could tilt the scales in PSG’s favour considering a potential violation of Financial Fair Play rules.
The reports from Il Mattino hint at a strategy to pressure Chelsea into action, suggesting that unless the Stamford bridge outfits do something—selling their players and relaunch their efforts—in a bid to top the race to sign the player.
Nigeria Boosted against South Africa Ahead of World Cup Qualifier
Exactly four months after they were bumped and relegated to the third-place match of the Africa Cup of Nations by the Super Eagles, South Africa’s Bafana Bafana are in jitters as they will come up against the three-time African champions again, in a crucial 2026 World Cup qualifying match in Uyo.
Only three days ago, the Super Falcons pushed the Banyana Banyana, reigning African champions, off the bus to this year’s Women’s Olympic Football Tournament, instead grabbing the ticket to make sure of a first appearance at the glamour tournament for the first time in 16 years.
The assured manner of Nigeria’s victories in the two fixtures have left the hierarchy of South African football flummoxed, and there is no adequate time to recover or rejig strategies before the Bafana Bafana come up against the Super Eagles in a Day 3 encounter of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying series at
the Godswill Akpabio Stadium, Uyo on June 7.
With two points from their previous two matches, but aware of the hold they have over the Bafana Bafana, the African vice champions are confident of the three points on the day, which could see them fly to the top of the pool.
It was on February 7, at the Stade de la Paix, Bouake that the Super Eagles kicked Bafana to the third-place match of the 34th Africa Cup of Nations. Despite achieving parity late in the game, the Bafana were cut to size during the penalty shootout with Nigeria’s South Africa-based goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali saving two of the kicks by the Bafana.
South Africans’ boasts of bouncing the Super Falcons in the Women’s Olympic Football Tournament fixture in revenge, ended belly-up with the Banyana failing to score a goal in 180 minutes of action, with the two
teams separated by Rasheedat Ajibade’s goal from the penalty spot in Abuja on Friday, 5th April.
Despite being a point ahead of the Super Eagles in their World Cup qualifying group, the Bafana will fall behind once they submit to the superior strength, skill and savvy of the Super Eagles on another Friday in June.
It can be recalled that when the two teams also met at the Africa Cup of Nations in 2019, at the quarter-final stage, Nigeria triumphed 2-1 in Cairo.
Players of the Super Eagles are already getting in the mood to deliver the big punches to Bafana in Uyo in a few weeks’ time. Only on Thursday night, top striker Victor Boniface returned from the injury that kept him out of the AFCON, by coming off the bench to score in Bayer Leverkusen’s Europa League quarter-final duel with West Ham of England.
Dessers Nominated for Rangers Goal of the Season
Super Eagles forward Cyriel Dessers has been nominated for Rangers’ Goal of the Season alongside former Newcastle right-back James Tavernier and two others.
The 29-year-old’s goal that was nominated for the award was his strike in Rangers’ 3-2 win over Real Betis in the UEFA Europa League tie played at the Benito Villamarin last December.

Other Superstars for Maiden Charity Champions Cup
Ahead of the maiden edition of Charity Champions Cup, an initiative of the Attom Foundation, slated for the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abuja on June 15, a number of global icons from the world of football and entertainment has been lined up.
Current African Footballer of the Year, Victor Osimhen, headlines a list of football legends set to participate in the first-ever Charity Champions Cup.
Others include former African Footballer of the Year winners- ex Senegal international, El Hadji Diouf, IvoryCoastandChelsealegend,Didier Drogbaand1996Atlantagoldmedalist for Nigeria, Kanu Nwankwo.
The Charity Champions Cup, exhibition match will pit football legends from around the world against notable Nigerian celebri-
ties.
The organisers is aiming to use Charity Champions Cup to raise funds and awareness to help at least 10,000 Nigerians, particularly the elderly, address vision problems caused by refractive errors, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and glaucoma.
At a press conference in Lagos on Thursday, the founder of Attom Foundation, Attom Yahaya emphasised the cause’s importance beyond the match’s spectacle. He and his team are dedicated to helping those with visual impairments wholeheartedly.
“This is a thrilling project for us,” Yahaya said. “We’re grateful for the support we’ve received so far. There’s still work to be done, but we’re confident we’ll achieve
our goal.”
For Stanley Chibuna, popularly known as Funny Bone, the reason behind using football as the driving force for this project is because of the power of unity it projects among Nigerians.
“Football unifies Nigerians like nothing else. Just look at the recent AFCON and how everyone came together as one Nigeria. That’s why we’re using football to drive this initiative,” Chibuna stated.
On her part, Kafayat Shafau expressed her excitement about another opportunity to make a positive impact. While Emmanuel Ogonna Iwueke (Doctor Craze) and Ekemini Ekerette joined the call for corporate support for the Charity Champions Cup’s noble goal.
NSSF Selects 25 for ISF World School Cup in China
The Nigeria School Sport Federation (NSSF) has picked 25 players at the national trials for the 2024 International School Sport Federation (ISF) World School Cup for girls taking place in Dalian, China from May 16 to 27.
Over 300 girls from secondary schools across the country participated in the two-day trials held inside the main bowl of the National Stadium, Surulere.
Faith Irabor, member of the football committee of NSSF, was particularly excited with the talents

displayed by the students while commending the NSSF for making the selection transparent National U-15 coach who led the technical crew in the selection process, Usman Ilerika, lauded ths structure put in place to select the players by NSSF while expressing optimism that the final list would make the country proud in China.
President of NSSF, Olabisi Joseph has charged well-meaning individuals and corporate organisations to support the NSSF in sponsoring
the country’s contingent to the World School Cup.
Speaking at the end of the trials organised to select students that will represent Nigeria at the under 18 girls football tournament in China, Joseph hailed the smooth organisation of the screening exercise while also commended the turn out of students while revealing that 25 students were selected at the end of the successful trials. She however, expressed excitement on the quality of talents showcased by the students.
In the 20th minute of the encounter, Jose Cifuentes passed to Dessers who skillfully got past his marker before unleashing the ball home to put Rangers ahead in the clash.
The Nigeria international’s strike is up against Tavernier’s goals against Ross County in a Scottish Premiership game early on in the season and his effort versus Aberdeen last December. Also nominated for the award were Abdallah
Sima’s goal against Heart of Midlothian on matchday 16 of the Scottish Premiership and Rabbi Matondo’s brilliant strike against Celtic in the Old Firm derby last weekend.
Despite Dessers resurgence under Philippe Clement, he couldn’t make the nomination list for the Player of the Season which will be contested by Tavernier, Sima, Jack Butland, John Lundstram and John Souttar.
Eagles invitee, Gabriel Osho’s Return Doubtful against Man City
Super Eagles invitee Gabriel
Osho is doubtful to return to action today when Luton Town face off with Manchester City in a Premier League match at the Etihad Stadium.
Osho has not featured for the Hatters since he came off injured in the closing minutes of the Hatters 1-1 draw at Crystal Palace before the March internationals.
Since then, the Nigerian central defender has missed five games in a row in the Premier League.
It was thought he would be fit after the international break
last month but his rehabilitation has not gone according to plan. Luton Town have been hit hard by an injury crisis ahead of their trip to the Etihad Stadium, with manager, Rob Edwards revealing that he could be without a recognised center half against the reigning Premier League champions.
Seven central defenders including Osho, Reece Burke and Teden Mengi had not trained this week, putting their participation in doubt.
“We’ve got seven centre
halves at this club and not one has trained this week,” Edwards was quoted as saying by Luton’s official website.
Osho has struggled with knee problems since the back end of last season and as a result, he was unable to make his Premier League debut until October 29, 2023.
He has proved he has the quality to play in the Premier League when in tiptop condition with two goals in 16 appearances prior to his spell on the sidelines.
Ogunyaju Warns Iwatt to be Set for Proper Challenge
Flyweight boxer, Sikiru “Isho” Ogunyaju, has taken a jibe at the current national flyweight champion, Sifon “Best” Iwatt, saying his title win was a fluke. Ogunyaju is scheduled to confront Iwatt in a national challenge fight at the Molade Okoya-Thomas Indoor Sports Hall of Teslim Balogun Stadium, Lagos, on May 1. Iwatt secured the maiden title of his professional career and won the Mojisola Ogunsanya Memorial Trophyat at GOtv Boxing Nigth 30 held in December, after a unanimous decision win against
Saheed ‘Eagle’ Azeez.
In his interview ahead of the fight, Ogunyaju said Iwatt will get the heat of a proper fight on May Day. “He was lucky to be the champion. I heard that his initial opponent for that fight pulled out. I am going to give him a proper fight. This one will be tougher than his title fight,” he said. Also scheduled for the boxing showpiece is a 10-round West African Boxing Union (WABU) light welterweight title clash between Segun “War” Adeyemi and Adeyemi “Spirit” Adekanla.
The national welterweight category will feature a challenge fight between Raheem “Baddo” Animashaun and Samuel “Apata Roro” Moses; Afikun Gbenga will square up against Adewale Oladeji in a super welterweight challenge fight; the national catchweight category will see Sikiru “Omo Iya Eleja” Shogbesan, battle Batholomew Abuchi; Emmanuel Abimbola will slug it out with Azeez Ayobami in the national lightweight category, while Hammed ‘Ese’ Ganiyu and Yusuf Ogunbumi will duel in the light welterweight category.
Lagos SWAN Remains Resolute Despite Police Intimidation
The Lagos State chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (Lagos SWAN) convened its congress on Thursday, April 11, at the National Stadium in Surulere.
The gathering addressed critical issues concerning the association’s well-being and the welfare of its members, despite the heavy presence of
some men of the Nigerian Police Force reportedly deployed from the Area C Police Command under the instruction of the Commissioner of the Police, Lagos State Command, Adegoke Fayoade.
The Lagos SWAN Chairman, Debo Oshundun, highlighted that the congress provided the state executive with an avenue to engage members on policies,
recent developments and future objectives for the association.
He also addressed concerns regarding the emergence of unauthorised splinter groups, emphasising the chapter’s collaboration with the national executive of National SWAN, led by Isaiah Benjamin, to address this issue and uphold SWAN’s journalistic standards.

History of Confounding Statecraft
Without the historical presence and pestilence of the inglorious late dictator, Gen. Sani Abachi, whose image and savagery virtually overshadowed Nigeria of the 1990s, you would have thought the attached article - and its main pinions - was written a few days ago. We once trembled under a manifestly malevolent bully who worked hard to place Nigeria in the comity of banana republics; and whose shameless fondness for larceny continues to vomit state funds hitherto squirreled away in foreign piggy banks by the same goggled tyrant.
Yet, the general sense of anarchy and misplaced priorities not only holds away even in those present times, but have snowballed into national ethos and routine madness. Read and confirm this seemingly wild assertion in the following article first published on 22 December, 1995, and titled ‘Miscellany of Bunglings’:
“In Nigeria, one thing is certain: that is the uncertainty of the source from which our selfproclaimed leaders get the impression (pretty close to a conviction) that our country would have been a forceful play maker in world politics and a giant of Africa, if we had carefully and intelligently nurtured our rich human and natural resources!
Baffling. First, we admit that our immense resources have always been bungled by our leaders in all spheres of public service (or dis-service); yet they are representatives of our fabled rich human resources. If we may stretch the ludicrous claim further: what natural resources does Nigeria really have which her dwellers have romanticised to a paradise in mirage? We live within 357,000 square miles, perhaps the fifth largest in Africa, with a population estimated to reach 120 million in four years (1999). Yet, these loud mouths have been shouting about misapplied natural resources since independence when we were less than 60 million people.
Where is the potential for greatness in a country with universities run by frustrated and ill-trained lecturers; peopled by hungry and fanatical students. Point at the great resources in a country where the Delta (region) which produces virtually our bloodline in petroleum is about the least developed in public facili-
ties, opportunities and general living standard. Search our hospitals, mortuaries, cemeteries, motorways, schools, armed forces, banks, industries, civil service, politics, and countless indices of a sophisticated 20th century nation - which of them could have given our rulers, politicians, polemicists, and all the noisy lot, a flicker of strange confidence that Nigeria is blessed? Which?
From experience, a nation blessed, even if sparingly, with potential for great heights, utilises seasons of crises to throw up sons and daughters wrapped and prepared for greatness. Adolf Hitler, for all his evil genius, was undoubtedly a genius; Winston Churchill, Benjamin Disraeli, Margaret Thatcher lit up the British firmament. George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, Franklin D Roosevelt, Dwight Eisenhower, and all those beautiful ‘colours’ formed the USA rainbow.
For each leader mentioned, add 10,000 other simple great men and women within their reigns. For ill or good, they charted routes leading to immense national satisfaction for their compatriots and to the envy of less-privileged countries.
Maybe there are some examples in Africa, especially in Egypt and Ghana of old; I have yet to read or see tissues of sustained greatness in leaders, and the led, in my country.
The reverse of greatness - the simplistic, the rustic, the banal, the impolitic, the spiteful...and other frivolous and resentful values embrace our national ethos. Immense human resources!
When we get frustrated with the sickening misrule and trial-error tactics of our commanders, we go on brain-drain - draining our hospital wards, lecture theatres, strategic institutions, etc, of inventions, knowledge and intellect. Then, the mediocre and illiterate fill up the vacuum. Immense human resources!
Recent tales in Nigeria do not encourage hypertensive patients to contribute to national debate, since reason, logic and research are scarce. That is why the current catalogue of bunglings and miss-hits is best laughed over.
What great nation will harp so much on categorising itself into ethnic characterisations of only four colours (Hausa, Ibo, Yoruba and Minority) in a reality of over 250 languages? We call it federal character. However, if local disputes expose our fallacy of federal character (or unitary federation), a kamikaze plug is inserted. Or what business is a military officer conducting as an

Wrong: “You better come….” Right: You had better come….

You cannot use the verb ‘strangle’ with ‘death’ in the same sentence. “Despite the huge money expended in (on) these periodic maintenance exercises, the nation’s refineries have remained unproductive, forcing the country to depend so much on imported petroleum products at exorbitant rates.”
Daily Independent Online of March 2 backs the floodgate of goofs this week: “The result is that many under-aged (sic) children are routinely subjected to abuse….” All the facts, all the sides: overage and underage (not ‘overaged’ or ‘underaged’) children. The politics page of the above medium raises the tone with four slip-ups: “The Presidential Advisory Committee on National Conference recently kick started (kick-started) its sitting in Akure….”
“These facts have contributed greatly in (to) the level of congestion in the courts.”
“…enjoy their loots and still aspire for (to) higher offices.” Again, ‘loot’ is uncountable—and you aspire to, not for!
administrator (interim or ad-hoc) of a national university?! If an exercise in federal character goes kaput - as it is certain to happen - a more inventive and less insulting measure should be used. A soldier bringing peace to an intellectual environment disembowelled by base extra-curricular activities… Immense human resources.
Have you ever wondered at our choice of men in high offices? In Nigeria, it is not out of place to appoint convicted and jailed public office looters into higher offices. We have ex-convicts as ministers, law makers, leaders of ‘foreign’ delegations, spokesmen on international negotiation tables, counsels to national government. And they strut with unabashed pageantry. Even if we flaw the political implication of their crime or the vindictiveness behind their incarceration; since the legal process was fairly unflawed - and they were indeed jailed - a decent country would admit its mistakes in their gaoling, but put them at respectable arms length away from the epicenter of future political dispensations. Immense human resources!
It is sad, and a strong stab on our ridiculous claim to greatness, when analysts point to the fact that as Nigeria now battles daily to keep her little reputation intact in the comity of nations, her most respectable, substantial internationally accepted quality statesman is a farmer languishing in jail for plotting to overthrow a military which he led 16 years (earlier). The Abacha regime has shot itself in the foot, since all the minnows shouting themselves hoarse trying to panel beat the battered image of Nigeria do not have the clout - all put together - of Obasanjo who narrowly escaped a life sentence. The political suicide of a free Obasanjo consorting with Mandela, Clinton, John Major, Mugabe and other leaders (on behalf of a despot) will advise that the Otta farmer stays in his cell. Let us gird our loins for more diplomatic gaffes and rebounds. Since we find it comfortable having as a foreign affairs minister a happy-go-lucky architect millionaire and a chairman of a discredited political party in
a republic overthrown by this same government. And he even replaced a trained ambassador who also chaired another discredited party in similar disposition. It is only in Nigeria and, perhaps two or three other backward African countries, that such a Shakespearean scenario comes to reality.
Really, there is no shame in admitting that our immense human resources are (blighted) in several instances - let’s go through some. We have passed through nine de facto rulers (don’t mention Ernest Shonekan); yet, none of them has seen the four walls of a university as adolescents. It isn’t strange. Most of them were busy training how to kill when their peers were developing their minds.
Have you gone through the list of the fifty odd “wise men” saddled with the task of international diplomatic trouble-shooting? Well, only Nigeria can assemble such coterie of traditional rulers and military officers to engage in high-stakes diplomacy. With estacodes to scramble for, we may not have to wait too long before we hear of visits to other democracies. Of course, our ratings will take another plunge as diplomatic brinkmanship is replayed on a level similar to local government election mudslinging. Let’s give kudos to whom is due. We do have immense human resources.
Talking about sanctions, have you read any of our high-calibre intellectuals educating us with the cold facts of oil sanction, its gains and pains? They have left the task to patriotic NUJ officials, politician-journalists, and all those whose logic is stained by the loss of visa opportunities to the USA or UK.
If we must continue in our dream world, let us re-write our history books and remove the old stains in rulership, citizenship, sciences, politics, arts, etc. If it is impossible, then the bungling giant should be led to its resting place. And in its place, a young and energetic nation consistent with the right ideals, values and limitations will arise. Did you say immense human resources?!”

Onitsha Port and Other Matters
The conversation about an Inland Port facility in Onitsha, Anambra State is not New. And it came up last week at a private gathering. Many will recall that the ‘port’ was formally commissioned by late Dr Alex Ekwueme, Vice President to late Alhaji Shehu Shagari. It never really functioned in real terms. It is still the pet dream of many and all issues pertaining to it are presumably being discussed on the platforms feasibility, economic common sense and basic marine science and knowledge of regional ecology.of plain and verifiable aquascience.
We submit here that the project is a desirable one. It is also feasible from the angle of provision of port infrastructure. It has, in addition, been routinely declared desirable from the standpoint of those who are quick to point to the volume of container traffic from Lagos to Onitsha and other parts of the South East. But isn’t it possible that this is already beginning to look like a White Elephant Project that would be counted as a major investment in the South East, if successfully executed? Just asking.
What needs to be re-evaluated, perhaps, fully is its feasibility from the angle of security of goods and route; as well as its viability from the angle of the simple required maritime ecosystem. For some people, the mere fact that it was conceived to ease trade, reduce the cost of imported goods in South East markets, create jobs and generally enable the South East and environs realize their full economic potential makes it an eternally important economic infrastructure.
Papers have been written on it over the years, with Environmental impact assessments (EIAs), cross references with nations that had to devise means of raising water levels when needed; and a near-consensus among experts on the economic benefits.
One of the major overlooked, and largely unacknowledged, problem is the probability of not ever really getting enough water for the primary business of a port. You need water for a river port and the Onitsha end of the river Niger does not have enough. Dredging is a good idea, but it will give you a bigger ditch and wipe out the means of livelihood of water dependent local economies.
The confirmed practice elsewhere, of “gating” and later discharging the water to secure enough depth, is usually on the cards whenever this matter is on the table. All things considered, the challenges that come to mind regarding the proposed Onitsha River Port are: (1) How the river dams along the Niger, Benue and their many tributaries have reduced available water at onitsha by over 68%; (2) Possibly unrealistic projections about the prospects of the project; (3) The credibility of some of the existing Environmental Impact Assessment (AIE) reports, especially against the background of climate change and other environmental factors; (4) Direct politicization of the economic value of a river port in Onitsha, as against Port Harcourt and Calabar.
We must also consider the following; (1) the game plans of individuals who wish to upgrade
their relevance by fighting to secure vital “federal project for Ndigbo”, while sometimes knowing that it will either not work or that it will not bring the alleged benefits, and, also; (2) The questionable security along the inland waterways, especially with active militants, Egbesu Boys, and freelance oil bunkerers, creek-dependent mischief makers and others. Will the vessels really make their way through the creeks, while vehicles on our roads in broad daylight and even trains are unsafe?
Some of the discussions about Onitsha Port actually remind one of discussions about electricity supply a few years ago. The Federal Government was then building massive gas turbines for electricity supply. Everyone was talking about the mega watts that would be added to the national grid after the power-generating turbines were completed. But no provisions were made for gas. The then minister confessed at a private forum that there was also no “gas plan” and that much of our gas was already mortgaged to foreign customers. When he was pointedly asked: “So if the turbines are ready now, as we speak, they won`t contribute a single megawatt to national power supply, because no arrangements have been made for gas”? The shocking answer was “Yes”!
So those who are looking forward to a vibrant port in Onitsha should think of a “water plan”. The dams built across the rivers Niger and Benue, and their tributaries, over the years have reduced the overall water volume. There are now tiny islands, and unprecedented siltation, at the Onitsha end of the river. While the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Natural Resources is serious about irrigation and dry season agriculture, it must remember that the long stretch of the Niger across Kebbi State, itself a veritable food basket unknown to many, takes more that its fair share of the needed water.
We may digress a bit here, to urge the Ministry of Environment to work more closely with the Agriculture ministry and the National Inland
Waterways Authority (NIWA), because of the current global response to the devastating impact of dams on people and the environment within the past 60 years. It is a fact of our collective experience, across all continents, that dams have altered ecosystems, ruined food chains and obliterated local economies for hundreds of thousands of kilometres of waterways all over the world.
The confluence of some cold rivers with warmer ones have been permanently altered worldwide, while some flowing waters have been made to stagnate and create saturated water that wiped out fresh water aquatic life. Some rivers are now fragments of their former selves and others have dried up completely, as can be seen when you drive from Enugu, through Anyigba, to Abuja.
It is on record, for instance, that massive fish populations were killed on the Snake River, Idaho, in the US by dam construction; leading to the decimation of salmon species, among others. An Idaho State Senator, Frank Church, who originally supported dam building later rose in defense of natural waterways and spoke against dams. It was the same Frank Church who, after he saw the damage to the environment, eventually wrote the Wild and Scientific Rivers Act, passed in 1968. No one can deny historic significance of the Suez Canal and its economic value to this day, but the general global concern today about the fate of streams, rivers and other natural waterways comes from the realization that long-term damage is being done to ecosystems, following the unsustainable violation of natural habitats by damming. The negative impacts on the global food web and even the climate are staring us in the face everywhere.
Available global evidence shows that one of the main reasons freshwater fish numbers have declined all over the world, leading to a loss of 80% of fresh water wild life since 1970, is the damming of rivers. Let us recall the verdict of the World Commission on Dams, in 2000: that dams had displaced between 40 – 80 million people, making it the single human activity with the greatest capacity to create Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs).
Even in the US, the initial excitement that greeted the epidemic of dam building in the 1940s and 1950s was followed by fierce and bitter battles between environmentalists and dam builders. The issue at the time was that dams blocked and impounded the waters of some of the most important rivers of the American west.
It was already established, years back, that over 22,000 kilometers of free-flowing rivers in the US are protected by Frank Church`s Act.
But our waterways are available for all comers. The fate of communities displaced by dams all over Nigeria today is rarely a topical issue. What does NIWA really do today? How many people still take a ride on sections of the River Benue that were once used for water transportation? Who drank up the water and created empty water channels and dry rivers with massive bridges between Lokoja and Anyigba, and all over Nigeria? I am certainly not the one!
Let those who, threatening to build a river port in Onitsha remember that there is also a scaling
up of plans to build more dams across waterways that discharge into the Niger trough. Let them also not forget that this is happening years after the US came upfront on a campaign to “decommission” many dams. Recorded successes in this regard, with measurable positive environmental impact, include removal of the dam on the Elwha river in Washington State. One year after the last dam was removed in 2014, the Chinook species of fish, which had not been seen there for more than 100 years reappeared.
More than 4,000 Chinook spawners were counted above the former dam site. It is also in the US that people are taking proactive steps to reclaim their lives, by removing dams that interfered with their ecosystems and way of life. The Mohawks, in New York State, recently removed the Hogansburg dam on the St. Regis River, thus becoming the first US sub social group to remove a federal dam. This action of the Mohawks opened up nearly 700 kilometres of stream, liberated the natural habitat of migratory fish and restored many local economies.
After the last dam was removed from the River Elwha, for instance, river fish populations flourished. In a world where Brazil’s environmental agency has suspended the licensing process for the Sao Luiz Tapajos dam, the second largest hydroelectric dam in the country, we have no official attitude on dams. In a world where the World Bank recently suspended financial support for the Inga 3 dam on the River Congo, and where Chile`s largest power generator, Endesa, stopped six hydropower projects, we have no position on dams. Even the Chinese have stopped their plans to construct a series of dams across the country`s last free-flowing rivers, the Nujiang. The Peruvian authorities also suspended the construction of several dams across the Marañón River at about the same time that Geute Conservation Sur, an organization dedicated to the defense of ecosystems with high conservation value, is providing legal analysis to develop a new law for river protection in Chile.
The concern about water and free waterways is such that the world is focusing on transboundary cooperation between nations for conscious and deliberate management of the ecosystem and water volume throughout the length of major rivers. Are we doing the same in our country?
The conflict between China and Thailand over development on the Lancang/Mekong River says a lot about what is going on all over the world in connection with waterways today. To think that the government of New Zealand has gone so far as to “recognize” the Whanganui river by giving it the same constitutional rights as a person? This was done as a way of showing that free-flowing rivers have great impact on food security, water access, biodiversity conservation and propagation of the overall global ecology.
In sum, and bringing the matter back home, let us think of think feasibility, viability and advisability of the port; as we think of dams, the environment, the disappearance of riverdependent local economies and the collapse or conspicuous shrinking of fish markets in various parts of the country.
