t’s that time of the year again when everyone feels pressured to set new goals. You know, when millions of people across the globe set new goals to become healthier, fitter, stronger or smarter versions of themselves. The truth is that for many of us (yes, myself included), there is a certain appeal about making a change at the start of the new year. New beginnings often signal a time for a fresh start – a chance to put past mistakes behind and look to the future. Having an entire year a head can feel like a blank slate, full of opportunity and potential. Plus, I guess you also feel a sense of control when you plan sweeping changes for the new year. However, all of these factors mean that there is often a lot of pressure on us to make these changes. This probably explains why there’s such a high failure rate for new year resolutions. Over time I have learnt that sticking to a resolution is far easier when it aligns with your priorities. I don’t believe it’s necessary to set a goal that is too lofty. Self - improvement is a gradual process. If you really want to see results this year, you must set your goals with sincerity. Know what you honestly can achieve with intention and go for it. All you really need is a combination of personal discipline, willpower, perseverance and self - control. While these are elements of personality, there are also traits you can hone and develop, like deliberate action, planning, the ability to prioritize and also some tolerance for the discomfort that could come from the effort. Also, keeping the big picture in mind really helps — alongside motivating yourself for everyday tasks based on your longer - term vision. For me, even more than control, I hope for intentionality, discernment and grace. Whether any of us succeeds—that is beside the point. It’s the trying and the effort that counts. Keep at it, and one day you will get there. Meanwhile, enjoy the process, embrace the rest days, the treats, and the catering to temptations—and remember the key to goal achievement is persistence, not perfection. Happy New Year, guys. Welcome to 2023. Wishing you all the very best the year has to offer. Love,

FAR-FROM-HOME-
‘
ar from Home’ is the latest Nollywood buzz on Netflix. The fivepart series broke the internet following its release on the 16th of December on Netflix and got everyone talking! Created/written by Dami Elebe and Chinaza Onuzo, “Far from Home” follows the story of Ishaya (Mike Afolarin). A charismatic teenager and talented artist from a low-income family, his dreams suddenly appear within reach when a prestigious scholarship to the most exclusive school in the country catapults him into the affluent world of Nigeria’s elite. All the while, a huge secret threatens Ishaya’s newfound status and, ultimately, his family’s safety. The series is a Nigerian coming-of-age story which attempts to showcase how people of different socio-economic statuses can co-exist. It tells the age-old tale of talent vs opportunity, where talent is evenly distributed, but opportunity is not. It boasts quality production, a great cast and acting, fair cinematography, a good plot, a great script and high re-watch value.

FAR FROM HOME
The series not only presents a fresh plot, much unlike what we’re used to but a perfect blend of fresh and old faces as well. It stars familiar faces like Richard Mofe-Damijo, Funke Akindele, Bimbo Akintola, Carol King, Adesua Etomi, Linda Ejiofor, Femi Branch and many others. Some fresh faces we see include Mike Afolarin, Elma Mbadiwe, Gbubemi Ejeye, Tomi Ojo, Nats Jemide, Raymond Umenze, Emeka Nwagbaraocha, and many more. Safe to say, every single one of these actors understood the assignment and delivered quite accurately on their roles. For the most part, the plot was great, but a few things, especially as we draw closer to the conflict resolution, left a lot to be desired, leaving some unanswered questions. There were a few loopholes here and there and undefined character arcs and relationships.

Going by Hollywood high school movies, one thing that stands out is an obvious influence in scenes and characters; this also leaves the question of how much the plot/setting of Far from Home is relatable. Rumours have been on about a second season, and if indeed there is a second, we hope it lives up to the hype of this one. We also look forward to seeing attempts to answer/cover some of the loopholes from the first. While yet again, ‘Far from Home’ seems to be another production that is hardly relatable to the average Nigerian, we can’t deny that it is fresh, new, and a really good watch. We highly recommend you watch it if you haven’t.

orn Ahmed Ololade, and also commonly referred to as “Mr Money”, Asake was raised in a modest background and brought up by Muslim Yoruba parents in Lagos, Nigeria. Undoubtedly, it wasn’t an easy ride to become the artist he is today without facing a few obstacles. “The progress was unstable; people liked my music but didn’t know my face. I had been paid ridiculous amounts and been used without appreciation,” he said in a recent interview. When he first announced to his family that he wanted to take on music as a full-time career, it wasn’t accepted with big hugs. But at some point, they eventually came to terms with it, as Asake never relents to brag about his cosy relationship with his family, especially his mother. At this point, it is worthy of mention that his stage name pays homage to his mother, whose first name is Asake. Mr Money started releasing music in 2019, but it eventually took another year for him to experience a taste of going viral through his club banger “Mr Money,” which got him the attention of Nigerians. “I came into the limelight in 2020 when I dropped “Mr Money.” It was a freestyle I did with my friend and producer, Magicsticks. For me, it was just another recording; I didn’t know it was going to be so big. That was when I tasted fame and how it started for me.” Getting signed to Olamide’s Empire-distributed YBNL label, which is also home to the equally talented Fireboy DML, was the game changer, with his sound gradually dominating clubs, airwaves, and gathering spaces across the country. Taking inspiration from street-hop pioneers like DaGrin, Lord Of Ajasa, and Olamide, Asake music is very relatable as it draws from his life experiences, speaking on realities and documenting the Nigerian hustle spirit. In the past 12 months, the 27-year-old Lagos-based singer has collaborated with Burna Boy and released his debut album, Mr Money With the Vibe, to widespread critical and commercial success. Released in September, the album debuted at No 22 on the UK albums chart and is the highest-charting Nigerian album of all time on the US charts. It was named by Rolling Stone, The Fader and the New York Times as one of the year’s best records. With just two studio recorded albums, “Mr Money With The Vibe” and “Ololade Asake”, Asake’s message and melodic direction have been very monumental. So much so that they have established a reason for this fast-rising talent to sell out concerts worldwide and chart on top music platforms. His career is one that every artist craves to achieve, but not without having to invest a tremendous amount of time and technique in their musical craft. That we all agree! One thing for sure is that Asake has come too far to go back without his flowers.

f there’s one thing to know about trends, they always circle back at some point to be the next generation’s new obsession. This year, our sights are set on the resurgence of chunky heels. They are the new and improved wedges in the world of shoes and a 2023 must-have. They came on our radar in mid-2022 and quickly became one of the top fashion trends. We’re talking bold colours and chunky silhouettes that instantly draw attention to your feet.

And now, it’s clear that the trend isn’t going away anytime soon. The sheer look will be one most dominant trends this year - if not the most dominant—with every designer putting their spin on it.

argo pants are one fashion item that has always been around, but there is something more fashionable about them now. They have been a fashion favourite since they were first worn by British military personnel in the early 1990s, and in 2023, we know they will be a surefire winner, making big waves on the fashion scene. Mai Atafo has given us a major spin on the pants, making them more sexy and wearable. Beyond the traditional camouflage cargo, the heavily printed pocketed pant has gotten a significant makeover from several designers. We see it making its way into wardrobes in 2023 as a staple piece.

f there is one thing the post-pandemic has given us in fashion, it has to be comfort clothing. The pandemic gave rise to the trend of comfort clothing, and to our great happiness, this trend has stayed. We’re obsessed with everything from pyjama sets to kaftans to oversize shirts. They were popular in 2019, and they were still popular in 2020 and 2021. In 2023, these items will be bigger than ever, with designers putting a spin on pyjama sets, kaftans and boubous. eing a boss can never go out of style; that’s why the power suit reigns supreme each fashion year. Come 2023; the power suit will not only take centre stage but will continue to evolve with time. Power suits now range from a genderless oversized blazer with strong shoulder construction to a more chiselled couture-like silhouette. TEN REALISTIC NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS YOU CAN ACHIEVE 2022 is out, and a new year is here, so there is no better time to make new year’s resolutions to adopt for a new you in 2023. Yes, resolutions can be intimidating and hard to keep, but they are a good way of hitting the reset button to attain new goals in one’s life. The trick to sticking to resolutions is to keep them simple and attainable. Some of us have already penned down our resolutions for 2023, while others are still struggling with what they should be. But whether you have them penned down or not, here are ten new year’s resolutions we think everyone should consider putting on their list.
EAT YOUR WAY TO A HEALTHY,YOUNGER LOOKING SKIN Good genes and skin care products are just one of the ways to get your skin glowing. However, a good diet is also a critical factor that many fail to consider. Before you run around trying to find the best products and routines for your skin, let’s also take a look at what you eat for a bit. Here are a list of some foods that are dermatologically tested and proven to give you healthier-looking skin. By Bukola Amoboye
By Funke Babs Kufeji
AVOCADOS
Avocados contain vitamins C and E, antioxidants that can protect your skin from damage by the sun. Eating avocados regularly helps your skin build resistance to sun damage.
Schedule more time with friends There is nothing like too much time with friends. Come 2023, make more time for your girls and guys. Invite them on road trips, to lunch, or your place for game night—the list is endless. However, make sure to invite those with positive energy to help you maintain your positivity; this is very important for your mental health in 2023.
Maybe you’ve been turned off by walnuts because of the taste you get in your mouth when you drink water just after eating them, but you better learn to live with it if you’re obsessed with maintaining that healthy skin. Walnuts are a good source of essential fats, vitamin E and zinc, all of which are nutrients your skin will thank you for. For something so little that packs up so many nutrients, walnuts are heavily underrated.
SWEET POTATOES
Though approaching strangers may be out of character for some of us, making new friends never hurts anyone as long as you do it in a safe environment. Go the extra mile and compliment someone. Be it the girl or guy in front of you with cute shoes or your co-worker who has just given a top-notch presentation, make it a thing in 2023 to give compliments. A simple gesture can go a long way toward boosting the recipient’s mood and yours. Share the love with those closest to you, too.
Try something new every month Who said your resolution had to be limited to just one thing? Make a list of the things you have always wanted to do and plan to cross something off the list every month. If you are a foodie, try a new restaurant or recipe, but whatever the plan, start small, work your way up slowly, and remember to invite family and friends to make the moment more enjoyable.
This past few years, we have heard how important it is to go green, and one of the easiest ways to do so is to plant something. Gardening can be intimidating, so start small by growing an indoor plant, vegetable or herb. This will help improve the air purification in your home.
18
The presence of vitamin A and beta carotene in sweet potatoes helps protect your skin from excessive exposure, preventing dry and wrinkled skin and sunburn.
to a charity in the last eight months, or sell them off at a yard sale. This way, you make room for new things while getting into the continuous habit of giving things away and decluttering your space throughout the year.
Grow a plant
Be more active
Make your bed
Drink more water
We have all probably heard this all our lives, but it takes only a few minutes to make a bed. If you don’t do it when you wake up in the morning, you’ll probably have to do it when you get back at night, which I doubt is what you want to do after a long day at work.
Drinking water generally benefits one’s health, but you’d be surprised how many people dislike drinking water. If you fall into this category, then this resolution is for you. Buy a fun water bottle or cup that will help you track how much water you drink. Include some healthy extras like fresh lemon, cucumber, or fruits to give it a taste that will encourage you to drink more.
If you are a reader and seldom get the time to read, make it a must in 2023 to read a book or two in a month. If you don’t have the discipline to do it yourself, join a book club. It’s the easiest way to keep yourself accountable throughout the year.

Declutter A new year is an ideal opportunity to reorganise your space. Give things you haven’t used or worn
Let 2023 be the year you start to move. Many of us move from Point A to Point B in cars and rarely take the time to walk. Make it a habit to park a short distance from your destination in 2023 to meet your step and calorie goals. Make an effort to walk or dance, whichever is easier for you, and make time to get active.
Learn a new hobby Everyone needs to zone out once in a while to keep work and home stress at bay. Keep your hands busy with the many hobbies out there to help ease your mind. Try knitting, sewing, or gaming as some form of therapy to help keep you relaxed.
RED/YELLOW BELL PEPPERS EKI OGUNBOR
Like sweet potatoes, bell peppers also contain beta carotene, converted to vitamin A in the body. They also contain Vitamin C, which, as previously mentioned, is a strong antioxidant that protects your skin from damage by the sun. Vitamin C can also slow down the wrinkling and ageing of your skin by keeping it firm.
TOMATOES
These are also a good source of vitamin C which acts as a sunblock and prevents wrinkling.
GREEN TEA
Your body stands to benefit much from a daily cup of green tea, and your skin will definitely thank you. From reducing redness, preventing sun damage, and improving hydration/elasticity, there are multiple reasons why you should drink green tea more often.
OLIVE OIL
Being one of the healthiest oils on earth is a big flex that we have access to it is an even bigger flex. Olive oil is rich in healthy fats and antioxidants that reduce inflammation and slows down skin ageing.
CUCUMBER
Whilst Cucumber is great on the skin; it also works when you actually eat it. It can help prevent cell damage and improve skin hydration.
N.B. Combining a good diet, and eating the right foods, is an excellent start to your skincare journey. Don’t jump right into the products and
routines without first taking care of what you put into your body. Many more foods can help keep your skin healthy and looking young for a long time. The key is also in eating them more regularly.

Nigerian actress Omowunmi Dada took to Instagram on Boxing Day to share the news of her engagement. She announced it with a cute photo of her man and her stunning ring. She captioned the post, “See what I UNBOXED.” Omowunmi Dada has featured in several Nollywood blockbuster movies and television series. Asides from acting, Dada doubles as a model, voiceover artist and presenter.
izkid Balogun has announced free show performances for his Lagos-based fans while clarifying his statement about having a final show in Lagos in 2022. TWITTER RELEASES VIEW COUNT FEATURE.
T
witter has announced that view counts for tweets are now visible on iOS and Android and that they’ll be coming soon to the web. The feature lets you see how many times someone has looked at your tweet or anyone else’s. As for what counts as a view, Twitter says: Anyone who views your Tweet counts as a view, regardless of where they see your Tweet (e.g. Home, Search, Profiles, Tweets embedded in articles, etc.) or whether or not they follow you. Even an author looking at their own Tweet counts as a view. It also adds that looking at a tweet from the web and then looking at it on your phone would count as two views.

MY STYLE STORY;
WHY I LOVE NIGERIAN FASHION BRANDS By Ozinna Anumudu
BANKE KUKU
E
veryone that knows me knows I am a big advocate for Nigerian fashion brands. Almost, if not every, piece of clothing I own is from a Nigerian brand. And why not? Nigeria is arguably the biggest fashion hub in West Africa. Or should I say Africa as a whole? You might not know it yet, but our designers are beginning to influence the global fashion scene significantly. This right here is what inspired me to create Ozinna.com a home for curated Nigerian brands accessible to anyone worldwide. Over the years, I have come to have a few favourites and would want to share some of them with you.
Banke Kuku - Whats not to love about Banke Kuku. The prints. The ease. The little intricate details. You name it. The brand is different, original and appealingly fresh. Banke Kuku is a brand that portrays luxury in the most unassuming way. The silk prints are second to none and have fast filled my wardrobe over the years.
IMAD EDUSO

Imad Eduso - Whenever you see an Imad Eduso outfit, you will definitely recognise it. That is how outstanding their designs are. Their unique fabric texture, distinct designs, and colour palette always stand out. The creativity in their designs is what endeared me
DYE LAB
to the brand.
Dye Lab - This is one brand you
will catch me wearing even in my sleep. You can come to my house at 6 am, and I will welcome you at the door in my Dye Lab Agbada. Obsessed much? I can’t help it. Tie and Dye outfits have always somewhat been in vogue, but my friend Rukky Ladoja definitely turned it into a wardrobe must-have with her signature Agbada. At this point, it is safe to say she has created a cultlike movement of women who own dyed stylish pieces from her stable.
Private Label
- Two words; Feminine and Ease. Private Label is that brand that creates outfits for an everyday woman that wants that luxury appeal but still wants to look young and chic. Their pieces can be worn to meetings, hanging out with friends, or just going about your day. Our most recent collaboration on Ozinna.com was with this brand, and the drop was well received, with some styles selling out in a flash.
Weizdhurm Franklyn - When I think of special occasions, I tend to want to wear a custom piece. I did this on my 30th birthday a year ago and also for my best friend’s Lebanese wedding. On both occasions, I was dressed in custom Weizdhurm Franklyn looks. He’s a couturier who understands his craft and a woman’s body. His dresses are always a favourite in my wardrobe with the most beautiful memories.
