For the past several months if not the past year, we have been plagued with a pandemic that still has its grip on the world as people have died and are still dying from it. One of the most profound things that have hit home to us is how fickle this life can be. One minute you are here, next minute you are gone! This has made many of us reflect on what truly matters with other issues pushed to the bottom of the list in terms of priorities. l cannot emphasize enough the importance of staying home as much as you can. Whatever it is you need to step out for, please weigh it very seriously whether or not it’s worth the risk you might be exposed to. These are truly dire times. Most people have chosen to do everything that can be done within their homes business wise. Thank God for internet! Avoiding large crowds and observing social distance cannot and should not be taken lightly at all. For those who have chosen to only step out for things like grocery shopping, or home runs, needless to say, your ‘outing shoes’ have been safely tucked away to be replaced by something more comfortable which is where our 2021 SNEAKERS EDIT comes in. Not only are these most comfortable, they have literally become ‘a girl’s best friend’ in the scheme of things. Keeping it simple and casual is the dress code for today’s times truly speaking. Another thing everyone should have is a rich collection of vitamins in their medical cupboards or bedside. The pandemic has made it paramount that two major vitamins are to be taken daily, Vitamin D and C. Zinc is also required too. These three tablets are highly recommended and apart from that, VITAMINS FOR A YOUTHFUL LOOK shows you other vitamins you can take to achieve that goal. Stay Safe!

My grandfather was a no-nonsense disciplinarian, a very focused and serious minded man of integrity. He was legacy conscious and had a good sense of history that was second to none. He inspired me a lot. My grandmother was generous to a fault and l attribute my good fortunes to her kindness. She was in every sense, a strong and enterprising woman. I drew from both of them, the importance of integrity, hard work and leaving a legacy wherever you go. I know I have not been able to match them. There were others along the line throughout my formative years who also inspired me. What do you miss about your youth that you feel is lacking with today’s generation? There is always a gap between one generation and another. It will be foolhardy and precipitous to expect the generation below mine to adopt our own value system or we to adopt the value system of those above us. In my youth, we took pride in respect for elders, healthy competition for knowledge, communal spirit and our interconnectedness. Today, western values and technology seems to have eroded those. Communal living and interconnectedness has been replaced by technology. People hardly know their neighbours and do not have strong relationship with their relatives. We boasted about literature and history books we have read in public libraries whenever we met but today, public libraries are gradually being phased out by technological developments. I miss walking around freely in my village and on the streets of Port Harcourt without fear of molestation or kidnapping. On a personal level, I miss my mental alertness and fitness but gained experience. Things have changed incredibly especially in the past twenty years. At what age did you learn to fend for yourself and do you feel this better prepared you to be the man you are today? I recall that by age eleven I had intuitively realized my gift in leadership and service. I had no doubt that those were the areas I had strong potential that I needed to develop. This self realization made me comport myself differently. Unlike others, I consciously made efforts to sharpen my leadership potential to be a better leader who will make a difference and leave a legacy. Fending for myself didn’t come that early in life till I finished University or maybe in my university days. From my early days in the University, I showed great sense of independence

in reasoning and decision making and this extended to my finances. You cannot show independence of thought when you depend on your peers or those oppressing you for economic survival. I come from a family that combined public service with entrepreneurship and I picked up a bit of that. Making money from my early days plus insatiable quest for knowledge, gave me some courage to speak up. As you advance in life, make sure you work for economic independence so you will not be encumbered from speaking your mind. Contentment is another area that I have strength. My needs are not too much so I have no reason to be greedy or covetous. Do you feel the gap between the ‘haves and have nots’ can be drawn closer and if so, what are the key things privileged children have to learn to make them street smart and close this gap?

This issue of closing the gap between the rich and the poor has been there for ever. It has influenced systems of government and has been preached in religious circles. Communist believe that everybody should be given equal opportunity to work for the

commonwealth and eat from the commonwealth. Capitalists believe that people are endowed differently and those who have capacity to make wealth should be allowed to create employment. Our Society is structured in a way that those who are rich will continue to make more wealth while those who are poor will continue to serve the rich. The issues are about productive capacity, economic opportunities and creating the right environment for people to pursue their potentials. My take - society should provide opportunity for every citizen to build up capacity to be productive through education, skills and economic opportunities. Government should

put policies in place to give more people access to make wealth. Rich kids or privileged children tend to have a sense of entitlement which makes them lazy sometimes. At other times, they are not street smart. The right approach is to let them know early in life that society is competitive, things are dynamic and will not always be the same, interdependency and not independence is important. They should be taught that perseverance and relationship with people are key to success in life and that hardwork does not kill. At what age did you learn you were destined for leadership roles? What role did you play in University that defined your foray into politics? I had mentioned earlier that I discovered my potential to lead and serve the public at age eleven. During my university days I started by holding offices at departmental and faculty levels and ended up running for office in National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). However, I was elected National President of National Union Of Rivers State Students (NURSS) in 1991/1992. My active involvement in students activism and students politics prepared me for politics and service in the larger society. The dynamics are essentially the same but the scale is different. What I find disturbing is that the credibility of students politics and students Union movement is all time low now. People don’t believe students Activsts can still raise us for a just society. The creeping in of politics to students movement has rubbed it of it potency. You are a member of APC, why is there so much discord within your party? What are the main disputes? It is expected of a big party that its development, philosophy or manifesto did not evolve organically. There will be contest for whose idea will triumph or prevail and whose idea of organizational structure will be applicable. It is part of the evolution of the political culture. The issue can be narrowed down to the struggle for who controls the soul of the party. Unfortunately the struggle is not about good life for Nigerian people. However the party is beginning to put its act together and Nigerians should watch out for a repositioned and a more vibrant party in the days ahead. Other big parties are also facing their own challenges. Nigerian political Parties are only a platform to seek for power and not woven around a definite ideology. Nigerians should rather, watch out for antecedents and capacity of those who want to lead them and mobilize fellow citizens to rally around leaders who genuinely are interested in serving society. You wrote a book after your tenure as DG Nimasa. Can you tell us about it and how long it took you to put it together? The book is called Strategic Turnaround which essentially is about the reforms we championed in Nigeria Maritime administration and safety agency (NIMASA) in the past four years. I wanted those who

COVER

are serving in public office or who may be appointed in future to serve, to learn from our failures and successes. Secondly, I wanted to document our experience for posterity so history can record us. Thirdly, we wanted to shore up the confidence of those in public office to believe that there are no odds that are insurmountable provided there is a will. NIMASA at the time we were appointed, was almost an institution that was a liability and underperforming but the story is different today. Fourth, we chose to put together a reference material or a workbook of sorts so all those who want to embark on organizational renewal can see a model that worked to pick vital lessons from our experience. Finally, we applied principles of transformational leadership in a public sector setting that scholars of leadership will have lessons to learn from by the way we applied the principles. How long did it take you to write this book? Oh, literally it took me the last eight - nine months. I have always had the idea but I paid serious attention to it after I left office and I was able to sit back and reflect on my time at the Agency. You are so involved in Politics but sadly, this terrain is heavily linked with corruption as are official positions given within governmental parastatals. As a commissioner to the then Governor of your state, Governor ROTIMI Amaechi, and later, DG of Nimasa, how were you able to forge success and avoid the sometimes slippery slopes of working in the public sector? I have always had strong value system that I am not ready to compromise. This value system l subscribe to has guided me over the years. The one thing I realized in public life is that many persons are motivated by greed, selfish interest and not the desire to serve the public. My motivation all through the years in public service is to deliver service, leave a legacy and be remembered for the difference I made. With a mindset focused on delivering service, protecting my reputation and integrity and away from corruption, I have no reason to bother with slippery paths of public service. What do you think is the principal function of a political party? For me the principal function of a political party is to aggregate the ideas of a set of people on how to transform society, fight to secure political power so they can apply those ideas. Political parties exist also to educate the populace on civic responsibilities and mobilize them towards achieving national aspiration. The discord in APC is normal in a big party and in a democracy provided it is not destructive. What is worrisome in the case of APC, is that the issue is not about ideology or strategy to achieve development for the people but interest of a few self serving persons. It is a struggle to who controls the soul of the party. However things are settling down and I see the party bouncing back very strong. What is the solution for pressing issues that affect the wellbeing of the system like the health and educational sectors? It’s time for us to reset our national goals and aspirations. Our health sector is in shambles and Covid has exposed us to that piece of fact. There is a national consensus that we should give priority attention to our health and education sectors as social infrastructure to drive development. The starting point is to build human capacity, infrastructure, investment on research and innovation. Our work attitude and ethics needs to change, a massive reorientation is imperative. One of the greatest challenges we face both in healthcare and education is access of the citizen to services. Even if we had quality facilities, how many of our people can afford the services? We all have a responsibility to fix

Respect is a product of love and openness. l find time to listen to her, play with her and adore her. Giving attention to your partner is a secret you cannot wish away in marriage. I am her home Pastor and sometimes researcher. I am her Chief Adviser. Generally we are meant for each other and God has been gracious to us.

If you were to be Governor, what pertinent matters will you immediately address? The first priority for me would be security, law and order. This includes public sector accountability and transparency in the conduct of government business. Every other development rests on this pillar and without it, you cannot talk about sustainable development. The next priority for me would be to create the conditions for employment generation and wealth creation for our people. I would also focus on growing our social, human and infrastructural capital to stimulate economic growth. Finally, we would put in place the framework for food security. More than anything else, I would have loved to mobilize United Rivers state and Rivers people behind a common vision and common agenda. These things are captured in the agenda with which I ran for the Governor in 2015 titled “Roadmap to Prosperity”. The situation has not changed much from 2015 till date though the environmental context has. Are you involved in any form of philanthropy? If so, what charitable works are closest to your heart? My family set up the Dakuku Peterside Foundation (DPF) to provide scholarship to underprivileged children because of our belief that education is the best tool to close the gap between the rich and the poor. This year, we intend to do more work in the area of healthcare. Our strategy is to keep our activities under the radar and just let people feel the impact of our work. Education, which includes giving people skills and healthcare, are the closest charitable human endeavors to my heart. As human beings, we have shared humanity with empathy, care for each other

PERFUMES Scents are a godly gift. You might be an avid user of perfumes and you might have an extensive collection but have you ever wondered why perfumes are one of the few products that do not come with instruction manuals? Here are 11 mind-boggling questions about perfume answered! 1. What does the word Perfume actually mean? The word perfume actually came from the Latin world ‘per fumum’ which literally translates as ‘through smoke’ and the Romans and Arabs refined the art of making and wearing perfume 2500 years ago.

and love as our second nature. How did you meet your wife and how long have you been married? We lived in the same neighborhood in Port Harcourt. On a few occasions she brought mails from my cousin who was in the same school with her. That is how I took note of her person and started observing her. She was calm, more mature than her age, independent minded and very homely. A friendship started that ended up in marriage. She is still my girlfriend from the year 2000 till date, 20 years after. We are blessed with three wonderful children, Soba(19), Belema(17) and Mieibi (13). What key things do you believe are required to sustain a good marriage and what do you still do till date that she loves, to keep the flame alive? Each marriage is unique. Marriage differs from one couple to another however from 20 years experience, I can say appreciating that you come from two different backgrounds is important. As partners, you need to communicate often in an open and honest manner. You are not marrying an angel or a saint so you must learn early to tolerate and forgive each other. Make deliberate effort to build trust and bond of friendship. Watch your words to ensure you say things that promote love and understanding and not what will demean your partner. Both of you must accept that you are not in competition but you are there to compliment each other.

2. There are some perfumes that instantly attracts the opposite sex, can perfume be an aphrodisiac? Perfume can undoubtedly make the wearer feel sexy. There are indeed perfumes with ingredients that are known to have aphrodisiac qualities and the smell can prompt an instant attraction and intuitive sensual responses. Ingredients like Jasmine, Ylang ylang, Vanilla and Ginger are said have aphrodisiac properties. 3. Why is it that perfumes wear out gradually, or change throughout the day? This is due to the Top, Heart and Base notes in a perfume. When creating a fragrance, the chemistry of the skin and the raw materials used causes a perfume to evolve over time. A perfume is a very complex composition of top notes, heart notes and base notes. The top notes are the most delicate and do typically not last very long. Heart notes tend to be herbal, floral and spice notes which last longer than the top notes but you will be able to smell the base notes the longest. Base notes are usually composed from wood, amber and musk. 4. Does Perfume have an expiry date? The composition of a perfume might change over time. This is why it is recommended to use your perfume within 3 – 5 years. Once the bottle is opened and comes into contact with air by opening the bottle or spraying the atomizer, it should be used within the first three years. The older the fragrance gets, the more different it can smell, Eau de Toilette for example might only smell of alcohol after a few years. The higher the perfume concentration, the higher the chance that it will last longer in the bottle and as well as on your skin. Commonly, Perfumes with heavier (oriental) base notes last the longest. 5. A lot of times perfume shelf are either in the

bathroom or dressing table and sometimes they are kept in the car for days when we forget to use them before leaving the house. Are there preferred places to store perfume? There are certain factors you should remember when storing perfume. Humidity, sunlight and variations of temperature will impact your perfume over time. Therefore, to make your perfume last longer, make sure to store it upright in a dark place that is not impacted by humidity or extreme changes of temperatures so the bathroom or car is really not ideal. 6. Some people get confused about the difference between Eau de Parfum and Parfum, what’s the difference? There are different categories in perfumery for perfume types with certain concentration. Concentration refers to the amount of pure perfume oil within a fragrance. Eaude Toilette, for example, has a perfume concentration of about 10%, whilst Eau de Parfum 15%. Perfumes that are classified as actual Parfum boast a concentration of over 20%. The higher the concentration, the higher the longevity on the skin which means that a Parfum lasts significantly longer on your skin than an Eaude Parfum. One can expect a Parfum to last 8-12 hours whilst an Eau de Parfum might only last for about six hours. 7. A good perfume they say has a lot to do with one’s mood. Is it a mood booster? Perfume is definitely a feel-good stimulant that can relax you, improve the mood, make you feel sexy and act as a confidence booster. Perfume is also known to evoke certain associations. Having a scent memory can be quite special as it helps to remember things you actually want to remember. It is also said that Citrus perfumes make you energised and refreshed. 8. A friend of mine once said that same perfume we both used smells differently on our skin. Do they and why so? Every person has a different skin PH and also lead a

different lifestyle; sports, diet, smoking, drinking, etc. This can have implications on how your perfume smells on your skin in comparison to someone else or on a scented card. If you notice that your perfume smells different than it used to, it does not automatically mean that the perfume has gone off or that the formula of the perfume has changed – it can also mean that you might have changed your lifestyle. 9. What is the difference between a splash bottle and atomizer? Most perfumes are atomizers, which is essentially a spray pump. A splash bottle does not have a spray pump and does not necessarily have an applicator on the bottle top. Splash bottles are usually used for Aftershaves. Pure perfume oils might also be presented in crystal bottles that do not have a spray pump but feature an applicator which allows to dab and apply the perfume on the skin. 10. People get it wrong most times on how to apply perfume and most times it ends in argument because everybody thinks how they apply their perfume is the best way. How should we apply perfume? Perfume is activated by body heat this is why you should apply perfume on your skin at the main pulse points, the inside of your wrist, on the neck, behind the ear, elbows and behind your knees. Do not rub your wrists together as this will alter the molecules of the perfume and will result in the fragrance smelling different. You can also put perfume into your hair as it will last longer and will diffuse the scent as it is constantly in motion. Please refrain from spraying perfume directly on your hair as the contained alcohol can dry it out. Spray the perfume on your brush before brushing your hair. 11. Can perfume react with your jewellery? Not a lot of people know that the chemicals used in production of perfumes can actually damage jewellery products. It would often happen that you’re wearing perfume along with precious jewellery such as pearls and diamonds and also fold or silver plated jewelry. The point to be noticed here is that diamonds and pearls are particularly sensitive to synthetic ingredients that are used in perfumes and can lessen the shine of such jewellery. Gold however, does not react with artificial scents and should be wore with ease of mind. We suggest putting on perfume and letting it settle down before wearing jewellery that is sensitive to chemicals.

2021..... We have just turned a chapter but guess what, it’s still the same book so if you were faffing around the year before and continue in that trajectory expecting a different outcome, I am here to burst your bubble, it ain’t gonna work. Consequences accrue to action or inertia, na so life be, new year or no new year.... To get the best of the year you have to hit the ground running, embrace each day like it doesn’t have enough hours, success does not come free to anyone, it is the resultant effect of a lot of work, oftentimes you fall on your face repeatedly before you hit gold. There are a few basic things you cannot devote yourself to if you want to soar, you cannot spend time on what does not concern you, learn to mind your own business because truth be told your poison may be my nutrient and I also probably have a poison troubling my system. You also need to dump fruitless relationships, these are relationships that do not add value to your life, it actually drags you . You need to quit spending time debating issues that yield zero income, get up, get smart and stop wasting time throwing stones at others, last time I checked, there was only one God, so stop with the judge and jury stuff, work on your life and grow. The “I know God more than Jesus” amongst us should wake up and smell the coffee, it is by your fruits that you can claim you truly have a relationship with the Creator not by putting your pastor on speed dial, interestingly many people are “CEO in their Christianity i.e Christmas, Easter Only” so get serious and release the throttle and then you move biko, to a better tide, if you don’t change the content, the story will retain its bland taste, I tell you. I remember pondering (on the 31 st of December) about the new year asking myself what could possibly change in 24hours, I do agree that the physical dates sometimes have spiritual connotations but I must reiterate that expecting a change with the same plan can keep you in limbo. It is a new year yes, a new day, yes, but what it becomes and how it unfolds depends to a large extent on what you feed it, how you grow it, the diligent removal of weed, simply put you’ve got to put in the time to nurture. The universe has a sense of humour, sometimes it humbles you, other times it elevates you, but you must at the very least do your bit. We really really need to strip our plans by checking out our reality and tweak it if need be. We have to relearn how to seize each day and stop it from running away from us, we must ensure we God stamp the 365 days of the year with faith and action. How does the pilgrim progress without faith, our expectations and the will to go on after the badgering of the previous 2020 is dependent on how we work our faith, you cannot do nothing and abracadabra the year into action. You can decide to put “2020 to be continued” on the door of your expectations, it’s your choice or you can say “enough” this has got to stop and take back your life. You must as a matter of urgency get with the programme and align with God, he is dependable and like Nathaniel Bassey sang in his “Olorun Agbaye” he has a track record for keeping his word, so why not learn to trust him. “Trust in the Lord and do good, dwell in the land and enjoy safe pastures, delight yourself in the Lord and he will give you the desires of your heart” Psalm 37:3. The good book also assures us further that “I was young and now I am old, I have never seen the righteous forsaken or her children beg for bread” . We need to get up from our pity party and take our lives back, cos if we don’t we will be singing the same song in December wondering how we wronged God. Happy new day of realisation, happy eureka moment, happy new dawn.

CONVERSATIONS WITH A SERPENT (1) ‘Now the serpent was more crafty than any of the wild animals the Lord God had made. He said to the woman, “Did God really say, ‘You must not eat from any tree in the garden?” Genesis 3:1 Temptation usually begins with a conversation; a conversation with one’s self, with another or with society. After God had created the world, He created Adam (a man). God planted a garden and placed Adam in it. He also gave Adam the responsibility of tending the garden. Then God gave Adam a commandment; “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.” God saw that Adam would be lonely, that he needed a companion who would help him. God paraded all the animals he had created before Adam so he would name them. Adam did. But none of the animals was a suitable companion for the man. God then put Adam to deep sleep and out of his rib created Eve (a woman). When Adam woke up, God presented Eve to him. Adam knew this creation was different. There was something special about her. He must have sensed she was a part of him – no wonder he proclaimed: “This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called ‘woman’, because she was taken out of man.” Lurking somewhere in the shadows when all this was happening, was the tempter, the devil, in the form of a serpent. He had a plan to thwart the plan of God. His target was to hit the human race, with eternal consequences. He had to be meticulous, he needed to execute his plan seamlessly. The devil was calculated and cunning. He avoided the man and went for the woman. He had a simple question for her. “Did God really say…?” The first tactic of the devil was to attack the notion of God speaking. In effect he was saying to Eve ‘Does God speak? Did God speak? Come on, how can you be so gullible? Did you hear God speak?’ God had given this instruction to Adam before Eve came into the picture. Indeed, Eve did not hear God speak. She was relying on what her husband had told her. Meanwhile the devil had succeeded in engaging Eve. He had lured her into dialogue. He had cast doubt on the word of God. He now had her where he wanted her: having a conversation with a serpent.

Step one accomplished, he went one step further. “….You must not eat from any tree in the garden?” The devil misquoted the scriptures. This would confuse the woman so that she would actually wonder, first, if God speaks, second, if God had spoken and third, if so, what God had actually said. God had said they could eat of EVERY tree in the garden EXCEPT of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The devil’s misinterpretation of scriptures was his second plot to get Eve’s attention. The wrong quote first got her thinking, then dwelling, until it dawned on her that it was a misrepresentation. Meanwhile the devil had succeeded in engaging Eve. He had lured her into dialogue. He had confused her with the word of God. He now had her where he wanted her: having a conversation with a serpent. Are you having a conversation with a serpent? The devil does not respect age, status, orientation, education or wealth. All he cares about is his 3-fold ministry; to steal, kill and destroy (John 10:10). When he turns up, it is not to play games but to accomplish his mission. And he is focused. The devil has not changed. He still deploys the same bag of tricks. Like he did with Eve, he usually begins with dialogue; a voice within us or a voice around us. But for every temptation there is another voice pulling us in the opposite direction. How do we know which is good and which is evil? The voice of God aligns with His word. It takes us on the path of righteousness; the straight and narrow path that leads to eternal life. The voice of the devil, on the other hand, takes us on the path of disobedience to the word of God; the broad way that leads to destruction. Like happened for Eve, our response to a ‘simple’ question in our conversation with a serpent can lead down a path with dire, eternal consequences. Don’t pay him attention when he casts doubt on the word of God. Don’t pay him attention when he misquotes the word of God. Don’t be lured into dialogue with him. Whatever you do, never enter into a conversation with a serpent. Happy New Year! Koko Kalango is author of the Colours of Life devotional and host of the Colours of Life show. BATTLE OF THE BULGE Recap and vital statistics: I am 5 feet and 10 inches tall and 61 years old. I was an effortlessly super-slim 70kg till my late 40s, then the weight started to pile on. By my early 50s, I was 85kg. But I didn’t become obese till my mid-50s. I started this battle of the bulge on March 16th last year, when I weighed a whopping 120kg and measured 49-47-51 (chest-waist-hips) inches. And I’ve been struggling to shed excess lard since then. I was at my happiest and most elegant when I was 70kg and a size 10 (UK sizing). But a woman of my current advanced age might look haggard – ill and starved even - in a totally fat-free body and face zone, so I’m taking the view that a bit of genteel padding does a sexuagenarian no harm. And since I didn’t feel/ look too bad when I was 85kg and a size 14, that’s the compromise I am aiming for. It’s been a yo-yo ride. My weight has, alas, fluctuated wildly since I started this journey. I’ve had weeks when I’ve lost a couple of kilos, weeks when I’ve regained every lost kilo and weeks when I haven’t gained or lost an ounce. Last summer, my weight dropped to 106kg – my lowest point on this journey. I won’t bore you with all of the ups and downs my weight has been through

VITAMINS FOR FIRM SKIN

VITAMINS FOR SUPPLE SKIN

VITAMIN A

VITAMIN B3

Also known as niacin, this magic vitamin is a powerhouse ingredient in skincare. It contributes to healthy glowing skin by restoring the skin’s moisture content, and also improves texture. Topical application of this vitamin helps repair the outer protective layer of the skin, boosting the skin’s barrier function and locking in moisture. It is also anti-inflammatory in nature.

This potent antioxidant is effective in reducing the signs of ageing by preventing damage to collagen. Collagen is a protein with great tensile strength and is the main component of bones, tendons, cartilage, ligaments, and teeth, also responsible for the strength and elasticity of the skin. By stopping the process of collagen damage, vitamin A keeps wrinkles at bay and keeps skin looking firm and youthful. This vitamin also prevents sun damage and sunburn.
