still remember my very first Arise Fashion Week experience. It was at the Federal Palace Hotel Lagos. I was a rookie journalist at the time and a total newbie to fashion reporting, eagerly lapping up everything around me. I still remember sitting behind my erstwhile boss Ruth Osime transfixed as the models walked down the runway. The clothes were beautiful and colourful, and the shows? Vibrant, artistic, interactive, and everything I could have asked for in attending my first fashion show. The strong presence of several different cultures throughout the show made for the perfect representation of African Fashion. A few months later, we would head to Bryant Park in New York to showcase the best of African Fashion at the Arise Fashion Week Collective. Thus began my love affair with Arise Fashion Week. Despite its six-year hiatus in 2013, the Arise Fashion Week has grown in leaps and bounds, taking its pride of place amongst other international fashion weeks. To say that it has played an enormous role in the growth of the Nigerian Fashion Industry would be more than stating the obvious. It has created a platform for designers to showcase their collections to a global audience and also helped raise the profile of Nigerian Fashion, promoting it as a viable industry worldwide. Let’s not forget its role in fostering collaborations and networking opportunities between designers, buyers, and other industry professionals, which has led to further industry growth and development. This year marks the 20th edition of Arise Fashion Week; we know it, and yes, it’s a must-attend. Titled ‘ARISE Fashion Week & Jazz Festival’, this special edition will take place from 2nd – 4th February 2023 and will take attendees and fashion enthusiasts through an exciting journey filled with enlightening experiences, with more than 25 world-class designers and jazz-themed performances from acclaimed international artists. As usual, the event promises to be dynamic, ranging from the atmosphere, people, designer showcase and entertainment. Can’t wait? Same here. 2nd – 4th February 2023!!! Save the date, guys. Arise Fashion Week is back. See you there. Love,
Konye

600 YOUNG MODELS EYE GLOBAL SPOTLIGHT, AUDITION FOR ARISE FASHION WEEK As preparations for the 20th edition of ARISE Fashion Week gathers steam, 600 young models competed for a position in what has been widely described as Africa’s most influential runway show. Those selected at the audition which kicked off on Tuesday this week will feature during ‘ARISE Fashion Week & Jazz Festival’, which is scheduled for 2nd to 4th February, 2023 at the Eko Convention Centre, Lagos.
M
odels, both aspiring and established, were given the chance to audition in front of an expert panel which consisted of ARISE Fashion Week Creative Director, Desirée Ejoh, BETH Models CEO, Elizabeth Isiorho, Executive Editor of THISDAY Style, Konye Nwabogor, and serial entrepreneur, Taofick Okoya. “The model casting this year was focused on finding great new faces who will join fashion stars from previous ARISE shows,” said Ejoh. “Previous models discovered by ARISE have gone on to have successful careers and take part in international shows and campaigns for brands like Gucci, Dior, Dolce & Gabbana, Louis Vuitton and many, many more. At ARISE, we aim to discover more new faces and continue to be a leader and advance the industry forward.” For most hopefuls, the opportunity a platform like ARISE Fashion Week provides can be life- changing. Casting director Konye Nwabogor has witnessed firsthand how ARISE Fashion Week can propel unknown faces directly into the stratosphere. “The turnout was really impressive,” she said. “What was even more refreshing was the number of new faces. I think overall we have more than 50 models who have never been on the ARISE Fashion Week Runway. Everyone talks about the designers who are allowed to showcase their talent globally through the ARISE brand, but they rarely talk about the models who are open to the same opportunities. This year it will be different.” ARISE as a platform has always been the first to showcase new talents, many of whom have gone on to achieve remarkable success on the global stage. Isiorho, whose agency BETH Models has launched the careers of international successes like Mayowa Nicholas, Davidson Obennebo and Nyagua Ruea, described ARISE Fashion Week as one of the best platforms for discovering new talents. “All the major international modelling agencies keep up with ARISE Fashion Week religiously. They are constantly watching to see which new faces will be on the runway, and often this translates to big opportunities for African models in many of the world’s fashion capitals,” she said. Some of the world’s most iconic models have graced the ARISE Fashion Week runway, including Alec Wek, Grace Jones and of course, Naomi Campbell. However, ARISE continuously pushes the envelope for African fashion by placing promising new talents on the same runway as these established icons, celebrating previous generations while placing a spotlight firmly on the new.

HOW SOCIAL MEDIA HAS CREATED A THRIVING ECONOMY FOR GEN Z.
S
aying that social media has profoundly impacted how we communicate, connect, and consume information is more than stating the obvious. Some people would say that life before it was better, stating fewer distractions and more real contact with people as their reasons, while others, particularly the younger generation, would beg to disagree. Their argument is borne out of the fact that the emergence of social media platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube has given anyone with a smartphone and internet access the ability to reach a global audience. While both sides of this argument are debatable, one of the most notable and significant changes brought about by social media is the rise of the influencer economy, which has empowered a new generation of content creators to make a living doing what they love. Gen Z influencers, in particular, have been able to leverage the power of social media to build thriving businesses and significantly impact how we think about marketing and branding.
Gen Z influencers are a unique breed of content creators born between 1997 and 2012. They are the first generation to have grown up with social media, and they have a natural understanding of how to use these platforms to their advantage. They are able to connect with their audiences in a way that is authentic and genuine, and they have a unique ability to create content that resonates with their followers. The rise of the influencer economy has been driven by the increasing importance of social proof in the digital age. Consumers are bombarded with advertising from all sides and have grown skeptical of traditional marketing methods. Influencers, on the other hand, are seen as trusted sources of information and recommendations. They have built their audience by providing valuable content and engaging with their followers genuinely and authentically. This trust and authenticity is what makes influencer marketing so effective. Brands can reach their target audience through influencers who have already built relationships with their followers. Influencers are able to create content that is tailored to their audience, and they can provide valuable insights into the products and services they are promoting.
Mixed metal accents
One of the biggest trends for 2023 is the use of bold, colourful patterns in interior decorating. Whether a geometric pattern on a wall or a floral pattern on a piece of furniture, these bold designs are sure to make a statement in any room.
Natural textures

In addition to fashion and beauty, Gen z influencers have also been successful in the lifestyle and travel niches. They have built large followings by sharing their experiences and insights on various topics, from travel and food to personal development and wellness. They have also been able to leverage their audience to build successful businesses and secure partnerships with major brands in the travel and hospitality industry. The rise of the influencer economy has also significantly impacted how we think about marketing and branding. Traditional advertising methods are no longer effective in reaching consumers, and brands have had to adapt to the new reality of social media. Influencer marketing has become an essential component of any brand’s marketing strategy, and brands are willing to invest significant resources to secure the services of the most successful influencers. However, the influencer economy is not without its challenges. The industry is still in its early stages, and there is a lack of regulation and oversight. This has led to concerns about the authenticity of influencer content and the potential for influencer fraud. Additionally, the industry is highly competitive, and influencers are under constant pressure to produce new and engaging content to keep their audience engaged.
Despite these challenges, the influencer economy is here to stay. Social media has empowered a new generation of creators to build thriving businesses, and Gen z influencers will continue to make a significant impact on the way we consume the media.
