LATEEF FEMI OKUNNU

SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2023 ...NOT IN THISDAY STYLE? THEN YOU’RE NOT IN STYLE

The life and achievements of Lateef Femi Okunnu, a legal luminary and a statesman as he turns 90 years old, are worthy of celebration, as he has made significant contributions to the development of Nigeria in various capacities.

Ican’t believe it’s here already. In roughly six days, Nigerians will head to the polls to vote for a new President. From all indications, this election is expected to be a fiercely contested one. For the past couple of weeks, I have been engaged in several conversations surrounding who our next President would be, and they usually end in a deadlock. And it is the same question on everyone’s lips. Social media and traditional news outlets are abuzz with discussions about the various candidates, their policies, and their plans for Nigeria. One thing we all agree on is that the stakes are high, with the winner set to take on the challenge of leading a nation that faces a range of economic, social, and security challenges.

For many Nigerians, this election represents an opportunity for real ‘’change’’. The country is currently plagued with several issues: a struggling economy, high unemployment, and widespread poverty. Let’s not forget security concerns, recent fuel scarcity, and the naira swap issue. These days, being a Nigerian is nothing short of hectic, and that’s why February 25 represents a critical moment in the country’s history. This time every Nigerian believes and hopes it will mark a new chapter in the country’s democratic history and that, going forward, the incoming President will be able to address the many challenges facing the nation.

So far, the campaigns have seen their fair share of drama, entertainment, controversy, accusations and counteraccusations. Despite these challenges, we remain hopeful that the election will be free, fair, and transparent. I have heard a few complaints about the conduct of elections in Nigeria, and quite a number of people have expressed a lack of faith in the electoral process. However, I would like to stress that the right to vote is a crucial aspect of democracy, and it is every citizen’s responsibility to participate in the electoral process. Don’t just sit at home and complain. It’s important that we all come out en masse to choose a leader who can help move the country forward. Please be part of the process. Come out and vote. I am hopeful that it will be different this time. Yes, I am .......

FASHION TRENDS FROM THE ARISE FASHION WEEK RUNWAY

The Arise Fashion Week and Jazz Festival 2023 was a celebration of creativity, innovation, and the power of fashion to make a statement. The trends we saw on the runway are sure to inspire and influence fashion in the months to come. Here are the top 10

Sustainable and Eco-Friendly Fabrics: Many designers used sustainable and eco-friendly fabrics, such as organic cotton and aso oke, to create their collections. This trend highlights the industry’s growing concern for the environment and the importance of reducing its impact.

1980s-Inspired Fashion: The 80s were back in full force on the runway, with designers incorporating bold prints, oversized blazers, and power-dressing into their collections.

Power Suits: Women’s power suits made a strong statement on the runway in bright colours and bold prints. Designers showcased how this classic silhouette can be updated for a modern audience.

Streetwear: Streetwear continues to influence the runway, with designers incorporating casual, athleticinspired styles into their collections. Think oversized hoodies, graphic tees, and tracksuits.

Maxi Dresses: Maxi dresses were a popular choice on the runway, with designers showcasing the versatility of this classic silhouette. From bohemian-inspired styles to more formal gowns, maxi dresses were a staple of the event.

Bold Prints: Designers incorporated eye-catching patterns into their collections. From florals to abstract designs, these prints added a touch of fun and creativity to the runway.

Bold and Bright Colors: This year’s runway saw a range of bold and bright colours, from lemon green to hot pink. Designers used these eye-catching hues to create statement pieces that were both fashionable and fun.

Fringe: Fringe and Tassels stood out on the runway, with designers incorporating it into everything from jackets to dresses. The movement and texture that fringe adds to a look create a fun and playful feel.

Puffy Sleeves: Puffy sleeves were on display, adding a touch of drama to even the simplest outfits. Whether on blouses or dresses, these statement sleeves made a lasting impression.

Androgynous Styles: Androgynous styles continue to be popular on the runway, with designers showcasing genderneutral pieces that blur the lines between men’s and women’s fashion. From tailored suits to oversized blazers, these styles broke down traditional fashion boundaries.

This year’s event saw guests arrive in style, showcasing the runway’s latest designs in their unique ways. From bold to statement pieces, the guests turned heads with their fashionable ensembles.

One standout look was a stunning see-through frilly purple dress from Tiffany Amber’s collection worn by Oyin Olufeko. The dress was paired with a simple clutch, making a stunning, feminine look.

One thing that sets him apart from other designers is his commitment to sustainability. He believes that fashion should be both beautiful and environmentally responsible, and he incorporates this philosophy into every design he creates. In this interview with Charles Didee Eta, he talks about his experience showcasing on the Arise Fashion Week runway for the first time and the impact it has had on his brand.

Tell us about your Arise Fashion Week experience.

No words. It has been an amazing experience! The platform has given opportunities and international recognition to not only established designers and talent but also to emerging designers to be discovered worldwide. What more could you ask for? Arise has always been known for giving epic moments since I attended the first edition, and it’s exciting to see the growth since then.

How has the show influenced your career as a designer?

It has shoved my brand in the world’s face, and that’s everything to me right now.

Where do you see your craft taking you in the next 5years?

I’m open to wherever the journey takes me; I’ve never been in any rush to hit any goals, I just hope to be happy doing what I love, to keep evolving and, of course, to be able to use the experience I’ve gained to help and advice younger and upcoming talents in the field, as I personally didn’t have much of that, and I know how important it is to have that when starting out in the fashion industry or any industry for that matter.

What are your thoughts on the other designers who showcased?

I genuinely appreciate every Nigerian designer’s work right now; it is so exciting and interesting to see how far Nigerian fashion has gone and where it’s going. The quality and craftsmanship keep improving, and Nigerians are getting more confident buying from their own. I would say, though, that I was really excited to see Lisa Folawiyo’s showcase. She’s conquered the female market, not only locally but

on an international level, and she’s done it gracefully. She has recently delved into men’s fashion - she’s a master of her craft, and I’m excited to see what she does with men’s fashion.

How do you believe Arise Fashion Week has impacted the Nigerian fashion industry?

Arise Fashion Week has given rise to everyday fashion and cognitive engagement. The platform has put Nigerian fashion on a global scale and has helped emerging Nigerian talents reach heights they couldn’t have imagined.

CHIDI MOKEME MAKES A SPECTACULAR COMEBACK WITH SHANTY TOWN.

Finally! The much anticipated ‘Shanty Town’ has graced our screens, and we are so grateful for it! Written by Xavier Ighorodje, produced by Ini Edo and directed by Dimeji Ajibola, the six-part mini-series debuted on Netflix on the 20th of January and its all-movie enthusiasts have been talking about since then!

FIVE REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD OWN A SLIP DRESS

Shanty Town’ follows the journey of a young woman deciding to ‘get down with the dogs’ in her quest for revenge and justice after she was torn away from her family when unknown gunmen invaded her village. While this is the central plot, so many other interesting characters, plots, and twists are inculcated into the series, making it even more exciting.

This action and suspense-packed sequence present a mashup of storylines (cliché for Hollywood, relatively daring for Nollywood), a firm plot, strong characters and impressive dialogues. The movie saw renowned actor, ‘Chidi Mokeme’ back in his full element, reminding us why we first fell in love with him. Ini Edo also made a major comeback and was simply phenomenal in her role. The stunning actress has remained present but not quite active. It was nice to see her give a mind-blowing performance in this series. Other note-worthy actors include Nse IkpeEtim, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Shaffy Bello, Nancy Isime, Sola Sobowale, Ali Nuhu, and many others. Aside from the cast line-up being very attractive, it is even more pleasing to us that these actors brought their all to their roles!

The fight scenes were impressive, worth replaying, and definitely one of the best we’ve seen in any Nollywood movie! Big ups to the trainers and stunt coordinators. Also, Ini, with the martial kicks and moves, was a delight, something we were lucky to experience multiple times. It is obvious a lot of work went into it. The cinematography was also impressive, creative and detailed. The language switch, Ibibio, English, Pidgin, Yoruba and Igbo, was perfect, possibly one of the most diverse and the best use of languages in any Nigerian series. It was simply rich and refreshing to hear. The special effects were another high point; detailed, accurate and realistic. While we’re at it, we also want to gush at Nse’s makeup; it was simply stunning and

very befitting!

Of course, no movie can be perfect, and this being no exception, we had a couple of minor dampeners here and there.

First, most of the sound effects/ADR (automated dialogue replacement) needed to be more accurate especially in the fight scenes. Many times, the audio reaction of the actors during their fights were either not in tune with the video or obviously didn’t belong to the actors on set, while some were simply a little inappropriate and didn’t serve the purpose.

Secondly, grammatical blunders occurred one too many times amongst the actors and were annoyingly obvious especially because a lot of them were pronounced. Surely between the director and assistants, editors and assistants, and producers, someone ought to have noticed at least some of the errors and drawn attention to them. Then again, maybe they were too excited by all of the ongoing action and fine acting to care. Still, it’s excusable if it happens once or twice but not multiple times throughout the movie! It would have been better to either reshoot the scene or, better still, engage ADR.

Thirdly, while we loved the fight scenes, a number of them dragged on for too long. It was almost like the director/producer just wanted to show off the work they put into training which we appreciate, but c’mon, move it along already; other things are happening elsewhere!

Lastly, ‘Oh, the nudity!’ We understand the message and how you would think it is necessary for realism, but keep it down, people! We don’t want NBC breathing down our necks and threatening to ban Netflix.

If ‘Shanty Town’ makes it into the selection of movies for this year’s African Movie Awards, it will be a really tough competition. If you are yet to see it, we highly recommend you do; there’s something to keep you glued at the end of each episode, also from the looks of it, we might be getting a second season!

Slip dresses are a must-have piece for any wardrobe. They’re versatile, comfortable, timeless, great for layering and easy to care for. With so many benefits, it’s no wonder why they’ve become a fashion staple. Here are five reasons why you should own one.

Versatility: Slip dresses are incredibly versatile, as they can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion. They can be paired with heels and statement jewellery for a night out or worn with a denim jacket and sneakers for a casual look.

Comfort: Slip dresses are typically made of lightweight, breathable fabrics like silk or satin, which makes them incredibly comfortable to wear. They also have a relaxed, flowy fit, making them perfect for summer.

Timelessness: Slip dresses have been around for decades and always seem to stay in style. They’re classic pieces that can be worn year after year and will always look chic and stylish.

Layering potential: Slip dresses are perfect for layering, as they canbe worn over a t-shirt, paired with a cardigan or blazer, or even worn under a sweater. The possibilities are endless, making them a great addition to any wardrobe.

Easy to care for: Slip dresses are generally easy to care for, as most are machine-washable and can be ironed on low heat. They are also easy to pack and take on trips, making them an excellent option for travel.

With less than a week to vote in the highest office in public service, there’s a significant interest in the 2023 general elections. And yes, the Gen Z’s are included this time.

I’d use myself as an example. was eligible to vote four years ago, but I didn’t. I didn’t even lift a finger, didn’t bat an eye, and didn’t even start the process of getting my Permanent Voters Card (PVC). But today, I’m among the 79 per cent of registered voters in Nigeria who have successfully picked up their PVCs — as of Dec. 22, according to a new survey by SBM Intelligence. The survey also indicated that the 79 per cent successful collection rate is a marked improvement on the 41 per cent recorded in the first survey carried out in July 2022.

In addition to this, Mahmood Yakubu, the chairman of INEC, has said 9.5 Million new voters have been recorded.

In addition to the existing number of 84 million registered voters. If you do a bit of maths, this means the initial record of voters in Nigeria now stands at 93.5 million. Considering the margin of votes other candidates have won, this is a significant number. All these and more imply the electorates are going the extra mile to ensure they can exercise their right in the 2023 general elections.

The question now is why? Why does the forthcoming election seem very much a do-or-die affair? Could it be tired Nigerians plagued with hardship under the current government? Is the constant fuel scarcity? Or the mismanaged naira swap, which has plunged millions of people across the country into unprecedented adversity? Maybe it’s the unwarranted killing of people who look a lot like me and my friends just because we are demanding our rights?

For me, the next eight years of my life are crucial. I CANNOT wholeheartedly commit the next phase of my life to the same set of people that governed it 24 years prior. In the words of Wande Coal, “Shey na like this we go dey?”.

In anticipation of the upcoming elections, I spoke to a few young people to see where their heads are as regards the polls.

Anuoluwa, 25

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

It’s my first time voting.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

I think it’s time to stop talking and act.

We’re voting for Nigeria’s future. am Nigerian, so I’m voting for my future.

Who are you voting for as your President?

We’ll see at the polls!

Sokari, 23

Do you have your PVC?

Yeah... I do.

Is this your first time voting?

Yes. It’s my first time voting.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

Voting is important because there has to be a change in Nigeria, and only our votes would put the right person in that position.

Who are you voting for as your President?

I would be voting for Obi; I’m highly

A-Gen

By the next election, I’ll be 30; we can’t keep wasting time and leaving these important decisions to chance.

Who would you have voted for as your President?

If I got it, I was going to vote for Obi.

Adakole, 26

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I have my Permanent Voters Card.

Is this your first time voting?

It’s my first time voting.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

It’s so important for me because it feels like we have a chance to take power back from the oppression we have faced for a long time now.

Who are you voting for as your President?

Peter Obi! Who else?

And the GEN Z’s head out to the polling units

“Obidient.”

Mayowa, 24

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

No, this isn’t my first time voting.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

It’s extra important to me because now, more than ever before, I can see the effect of bad leadership in real time on my life, career and finances especially.

Who are you voting for as your President?

I’m voting for Peter Obi as my president.

Itty, 21

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, got my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

It’s going to be my first time voting.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

As a creative person, I consider so many policies unnecessary in Naija. Only a forward-thinking government can scrap them out and implement equally forward-thinking ones that will favour my growth as a young Nigerian. The other candidates obviously don’t fit this description. I’m also really just tired of all the nepotism that has been going around in Nigerian politics for the longest time. E don do abeg.

Who are you voting for as your President?

I will not be voting “murderers” into power after everything that happened in October 2020. So, I’m voting for Peter Obi as the next president. So shall it be!

Oyinda, 25

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting? No, I’ve voted before.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

Complaining will not change anything. Actions will.

Who are you voting for as your President?

Peter Obiiiii. Abeg.

Tejumade, 23

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

Yes, it’s my first time. Taking away my voting virginity. LOL.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

It’s important right now because it’s my civic duty, and I believe my vote will count in selecting a good leader who can make this country great again.

Who are you voting for as your President?

Peter Obi.

Maurice, 24

Do you have your PVC? Yes o. After all struggles, finally have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

Yes, it will be my first time.

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

We need to be a part of the change we claim we deserve. It’s been a circle of corrupt leadership and nonlisteners — we need to change that.

Who are you voting for as your President?

His excellency, Peter Obi.

Laolu, 25

Do you have your PVC? No, I couldn’t get my PVC.

Why? Local Government Wahala.

Why was it so important to you “in this moment” to vote?

Lulu, 20

Do you have your PVC? No, don’t.

Why? registered and did all the processes, but they said my PVC couldn’t be found.

Why was it so important to you “in this moment” to vote?

I’ve lived long enough to know the current leaders don’t have my interest at heart. need someone who will fight for me, for us, fight for our country and fight for our future.

Who would you have voted for as your President?

Peter Obi was my choice. Still my choice, God willing.

Omotayo, 26

Do you have your PVC?

Yes, I do have my PVC.

Is this your first time voting?

Yes, it is! A shame, lowkey, but better late than never, right?

Why is it so important to you “in this moment” for you to vote?

This is the most important election in the history of Nigeria. Nigeria has so much potential to be great. The government has run our dear country to the ground and below. It is important that, as citizens, we understand that we are more powerful than the corrupt government if we all stand together. These vagabonds have sucked Nigeria dry, and it is important that we take away whatever power they think they have. We need our grandparents and parents to retire in peace and know that the government is supporting them. The younger generation needs a solid foundation for the future. It is bigger than what we think it is — this whole process. Those greedy bastards need to leave!

Who are you voting for as your President?

CONGRATS, TEMS BUT FIRST, LET’S TALK ABOUT THE GOLD DRESS

The annually anticipated event - The Grammy Awards, 65th edition took place last week, and this year’s event was nothing short of … emotionevoking. From the red-carpet frenzy to striking looks to the amazing performances, the highly attended guest list, the latest couples, the shady grammy moment (side eye Trevor Noah, Adele), and let’s not forget, the randomness that was Blac Chyna (yes, we had to) - this year’s show was very much grammy-esque.

The International stars weren’t left out this year, especially not Nigerian-born global star - Temilade Openiyi, who goes by the stage name, Tems - who attended her first Grammy event, not just as an attendee but a nominee for multiple awards and a grammy award winner. Whew!

The leading vibe won the award category for ‘Best Melodic Rap performance’ and chose to mark this moment in a custom Vivienne Westwood gold ensemble with pearl appliqué detailing. The look turned a lot of heads and made it to best dressed on many lists, including Teen Vogue, which described it as “stunning” - DUH! But of course, it’s Vivienne Westwood custom couture, honey!

Moving forward, let’s dive into why Tems made the right choice going for the designer. Presumably, Tems isn’t the biggest fashion aficionado and chose the dress solely based on honouring the eponymous brand in light of the founderDame Vivienne Westwood’s recent passing.

“There were other options — but I just thought it was so special,” Tems says to Vogue of the dress, which was completed two weeks before the ceremony. “I really wanted to wear Vivienne.”However, it was a serendipitous moment and here’s why. The British namesake brand, Vivienne Westwood, draws its major aesthetic from her homeland - Britain. Anna Wintour says it best in her tribute to the late designer; “She was a provocateur, and one with a deep understanding of what made her homeland tick: that peculiarly British blend of history,

class, sex, romanticism, and tradition, which she worked up into the most magical and imaginative of clothes.” She had a peculiar endearment for the 18th century. We saw proof of this in her early years where she played with A LOT of tartan, bold prints, crinoline, fur, frills, long stockings, plaid — oh, lots of plaid, kilts, big hair and her iconic corsets - if we’ve lost you here, think Bridgerton but a bigger budget and Dame Vivienne handling wardrobe. Get it now? Okay, let’s continue. This was post her punk era, of course. Her iconic corset first introduced in the ‘70s especially garnered its own cult as she was unofficially crowned the ‘Queen of corsets’. Over the years, for her couture services, she would stay true to her forever inspiration by incorporating the elements into her designs, effortlessly marrying historical traces with an ultramodern touch as she evolved in her work. Important elements in the designer’s couture work include form-fitting, waist accentuating, flowy, sinuous fabrics that flatter just about any silhouette - an undoubtedly magical, made-to-measure bespoke experience. This was the magic we all saw on Tems. Vivienne Westwood was indeed the brand for the job.

Back to Tems, the singer/songwriter has an inclination to dance between her masculinity and femininity when it comes to her style. We’ve all seen the matching baggy pants and oversized t-shirts, and so on. Favourably, she chose to lean into her feminine side for this milestone moment, and all we can say is thank you, Tems. Worn with her characteristic poise, the look was crowned with the perfect skin-like face beat, the most gorgeous pearl detailed updo and coveted Tom Ford matching heels, all outfitting to result in the singer’s preferred chill but sexy vibe. The icing on the cake, of course - her exuding almost palpable confidence. We love a moment where the designer and her muse understand the assignment. Great call, Tems and to the Vivienne Westwood team, exceptional work, as always.

What were your expectations for the show this year?

My expectations for the Arise Fashion Week this year were the same with previous years. Enjoying fashion from different perspectives as new talented designers will tell their own stories by showcasing their own directions and unique narratives to style.

How has the show influenced your career as a stylist?

I’ve been influenced both as a journalist and a fashion stylist by working and learning from professionals under this platform. The show has undoubtedly given me a keen eye and knowledge of how an international show should be organized, which has been a huge plus to my entire career.

Who were you most eager to see among the 13 designers showcasing for the first time?

I would speak overall and not just on the 13 designers. have four designers that I’m always captivated by their works; I’ll start with Vicnate because, for me... he is the future of fashion. I

absolutely love Ninie, his take on ethnicity, and his general play with fabrication, eccentricity and making African stories more contemporary. Then I’ll also add two geniuses who have stood the test of time in the global fashion industry: Nkwo and Ituen Bassey. These two designers blow my mind away each time based on how their creative minds work, and I honestly can’t express how they make me feel.

Where do you see your craft taking you in the next 5years?

Hmmm......to be honest, what I’ve learnt from life is to go with the flow.

SKIN CARE IN YOUR 50S AND 60S; CREATING A ROUTINE THAT WORKS

As many of you already know, approaching skincare in your 50s and 60s requires a bit more effort as your skin at this time would typically undergo many changes, such as deep wrinkles, sun spots and loss of volume, that would require you to adjust your routine. Still, trying to figure out how to go about it? We’ve got you covered. To create an effective anti-ageing skin care plan, you can start with the tips below. We promise incorporating them into your skincare routine and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will help you achieve and maintain healthy, youthful-looking skin.

First and foremost it is important to keep the skin hydrated. As we age, the skin’s ability to retain moisture decreases, making it more prone to dryness and wrinkles. Look for products containing hyaluronic acid, glycerin, or aloe vera, which are excellent at hydrating the skin. Consider using a humidifier in your home to add moisture to the air.

Collagen is a protein that helps keep the skin firm and elastic. With age, collagen production decreases, leading to wrinkles and sagging skin. To boost collagen production, consider incorporating products that contain retinoids, vitamin C, or peptides into your skincare routine.

It is also important to be gentle with your skin as it becomes thinner and more fragile. Avoid harsh scrubs or exfoliants and opt for gentler alternatives such as chemical exfoliants or enzyme masks.

Now that doesn’t mean you wouldn’t set plans, methods and goals, but I don’t like to live my life choreographed at the end of the day. So, regardless of what happens, though, we’ll keep pushing just like we always have.

How has Arise Fashion week impacted the Nigerian fashion industry?

Arise Fashion Week has been of immense support period. know a whole lot of designers, even stylists and make-up artists, who made headway through this very same platform.

The show is definitely responsible for bridging the gap between the more established designers and younger talents. Let’s not forget the undiscovered talent, which strongly believe are underdogs due to the tons of talent I’ve seen springing up. They truly need more chances, and Arise Fashion Week makes it happen each time.

Sun protection is also crucial in preventing premature ageing of the skin. Over time, our skin becomes thinner and more fragile, making it more susceptible to damage from UV rays. It is essential to use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 every day, even when it is overcast, or you plan to spend most of the day indoors.

The show has undoubtedly given me a keen eye and knowledge of how an international show should be organized, which has been a huge plus to my entire career.
