On Celebrating Women…
Though the United Nations has dedicated just one day to celebrating women and highlighting their significance in a world still grappling with gender disparities, believe we should be celebrated daily because of our diverse and potent superpowers. Anyway, for now we have March 8 and celebrate we will.
This year’s campaign theme, “Inspire Inclusion,” couldn’t be more apt. While it is true that we have made strides in gender equality, the path ahead remains steep. And I am talking globally, not particularly in Nigeria alone. Women are still significantly under-represented in decision-making roles.
This isn’t just a statistic; it’s a reflection of a systemic issue that extends across social, political, and economic spheres.
Lifestyle & Fashion
The theme of inclusion speaks to the heart of the matter – it emphasises the importance of ensuring that women are not just present but actively included and valued in all spheres of society. When we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion, we forge a better world. It’s not just about giving women a seat at the table; it’s about creating an environment where their voices are heard, their perspectives are valued, and their contributions are recognised. When women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance, and empowerment that permeates through every aspect of society.
However, let us not be under any illusion – discussions, roundtable talks, and debates, though crucial, are not nearly enough. We need action. Which truth be told is particularly challenging in regions where the societal system places women in roles and statuses deemed inferior to men.
Challenging, yes, but definitely not impossible.
While it may take time to achieve our goal, the good news is that we are not where we used to be.
Progress, though gradual, is being made, thanks in large part to the efforts of both men and women who are committed to driving change.
The men who stand as allies, who understand the importance of lifting women into positions where their voices can be amplified. Equally, to the women already in these positions who extend their hands to pull up others that make this journey hopeful.
To every man who has been intentional about supporting gender equality, your efforts are the backbone of this transformation. To every woman who has made room on the platform for others, your actions are creating a legacy of empowerment.
As we celebrate women this year, let us remind ourselves that the theme “Inspire Inclusion” is not just a slogan for the day but a call to action for every day. Let’s not be complacent. The world we envision – where gender equality is not just an ideal but a reality does exist - and it requires our collective effort. Together, we can dismantle the barriers, challenge the stereotypes, and build a world where inclusion is not just a policy but a practice.

BALANCING CAREER AND MOTHERHOOD: THE ULTIMATE JUGGLING ACT
By Oroma JumboMotherhood and career aspirations are often perceived as two separate paths, each demanding undivided attention and commitment. However, these days, many women are navigating the intricate dance of balancing both roles with grace and determination.
Juggling motherhood with a thriving career is not merely a challenge but a journey of resilience, adaptability, and unwavering dedication. For many women, the decision to embark on the journey of motherhood while pursuing a career is multifaceted. It involves careful consideration of personal goals, societal expectations, financial stability, and familial dynamics. Once the decision is made, the journey unfolds with many challenges and triumphs, shaping the essence of a woman’s identity.
One of the fundamental aspects of balancing motherhood with a career is the ability to effectively manage time and priorities.
From the early morning hustle of preparing breakfast and getting the children ready for school to late-night work emails, mothers often find themselves immersed in a continuous cycle of balancing domestic responsibilities with professional obligations. This requires impeccable time-management skills and the flexibility to adapt to unforeseen circumstances.
Even more important is a great support system, which plays a pivotal role in this journey. Whether it’s a supportive partner, understanding colleagues, or reliable childcare assistance, having a solid support network can alleviate the pressure and provide the necessary encouragement to thrive in both roles. Building and nurturing this support system is essential for mothers striving to achieve their professional ambitions while nurturing their families. However, despite meticulous planning and unwavering determination, challenges are inevitable. The constant struggle to find the elusive work-life balance can take a toll on physical and mental well-being. The guilt of not spending enough time with children or not being fully present at work can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. In such moments, resilience becomes a guiding light, empowering mothers to persevere in the face of adversity.
On the downside, societal perceptions and stereotypes often exacerbate the challenges faced by working mothers. The notion of the “ideal” mother who devotes all her time and energy to her children clashes with the image of the ambitious career woman who prioritises professional success. Breaking free from these limiting beliefs and embracing the multifaceted nature of womanhood is crucial to achieving harmony between motherhood and a thriving career.
Amidst loads of challenges, there will always be moments of profound joy and fulfillment that make the journey worthwhile. Witnessing the milestones of a child’s growth, achieving career milestones, and finding fulfillment in sharing their lives are moments to be cherished and celebrated. These moments serve as a reminder of the inherent strength and resilience that reside within every working mother.
The experience of balancing motherhood with a career fosters invaluable skills that are transferable to various aspects of life. From effective communication and problem-solving to resilience and time management, mothers acquire a diverse skill set that enhances their professional prowess and personal growth.
As we celebrate the resilience and tenacity of working mothers, let us also recognise the importance of creating a supportive environment that empowers women to thrive in both their personal and professional lives.
PROTECTIVE STYLES ON A BUDGET? YES, PLEASE!
As the cost of living continues to rise, finding affordable yet stylish protective hairstyles is becoming increasingly important in Nigeria. The current market trend shows that good-quality human hair wigs now retail for over a million naira, making them unattainable for many. Regardless, one thing is certain - the price of a hairstyle should not compromise your beauty and confidence. This is why we have rounded up a few cost-effective options to help you look and feel your best without straining your budget.
By Oroma JumboLocs (Dreadlocks)
Locs, short for dreadlocks, can be a more affordable long-term option when considering the costs of maintaining other hairstyles. They can be achieved using your natural hair and require minimal upkeep, making them a practical and affordable choice.
Crochet Braids
Crochet braids are another excellent alternative. They are affordable and offer a wide variety of styling options. With crochet braids, you can experiment with different textures and colours without breaking the bank.
Cornrows
Cornrows are a classic protective style that is affordable and versatile. They can be styled in various patterns and adorned with beads or other accessories to add flair to your look.
Braids with Kanekalon Hair
Even the prices of human braiding hair extensions are affected; this can quickly add up, especially for longer or thicker styles. Kanekalon hair is a budget-friendly option for braiding and can be styled into different protective hairstyles, such as box braids, Senegalese twists, and cornrows.
Wigs Made with Synthetic Hair
While good-quality human hair wigs may be expensive, wigs made with synthetic hair are a cheaper alternative. With proper care, synthetic wigs can be a practical and stylish choice.
Natural Hairstyles and DIY Styling

There are numerous online tutorials and resources available that provide step-by-step guidance for achieving various protective styles at home. Though timeconsuming, embracing and styling one’s natural hair can be an empowering option.
HOW TO ALWAYS LOOK PRETTY AND POLISHED
Achieving a consistently polished appearance is not just reserved for the genetically blessed or the fashion elite. With a few simple tips and tricks, anyone can exude confidence and elegance in every aspect of their appearance. From skincare rituals to wardrobe organisation, here’s your guide to always looking pretty and polished.
SKIN CARE
The journey to a flawless appearance begins with proper skincare. Establishing a consistent skincare routine tailored to your skin type and concerns is essential for maintaining a healthy complexion. Start with gentle cleansing to remove impurities and follow up with a moisturiser to keep your skin hydrated and supple. Incorporating sunscreen into your daily regimen is non-negotiable, as it protects against harmful UV rays and prevents premature ageing.
PERSONAL GROOMING
Personal grooming is the hallmark of a well-puttogether individual. Pay attention to the finer details, such as neatly trimmed nails, groomed eyebrows, and well-maintained hair. Regular visits to the salon for haircuts, trims, and touchups can ensure that you always look polished from head to toe. Additionally, don’t overlook the importance of dental hygiene and fresh breath in completing your overall appearance.
DRESS FOR YOUR BODY TYPE
One of the keys to looking effortlessly chic is dressing for your body type. Understanding your unique proportions and silhouette can help you choose clothing that accentuates your best features while minimising any perceived flaws. Invest in timeless pieces that flatter your figure and opt for quality fabrics that drape beautifully on the body.
INVEST IN QUALITY BASICS
Building a wardrobe filled with quality basics is the foundation of timeless style. Invest in classic pieces such as a well-tailored blazer, crisp white button-down shirt, tailored trousers, and a little black dress. These versatile staples can be mixed and matched to create endless outfit combinations for any occasion. Focus on quality over quantity, and choose pieces that stand the test of time in both style and durability.
COMFORT
While staying stylish is important, comfort should never be sacrificed in the name of fashion. Finding the perfect balance between style and ease is key to looking and feeling your best. Opt for clothing and footwear that allow you to move freely and comfortably throughout the day without compromising on style.
CHOOSE CLASSIC OVER TRENDY
When it comes to building a stylish wardrobe, timeless classics will always reign supreme. While trends may come and go, classic pieces endure the test of time with their timeless appeal. Incorporate timeless elements such as tailored silhouettes, neutral hues, and elegant accessories into your wardrobe for a sophisticated look that never goes out of style.
MAINTAIN A WELL-ORGANISED WARDROBE
A well-organised wardrobe is the secret to effortless dressing. Take the time to declutter your closet regularly and organise your clothing and accessories in a way that makes them easily accessible. Invest in storage solutions such as garment racks, shelving units, and drawer dividers to keep everything tidy and visible.
MAKEUP
Makeup, when done right, has the power to enhance your natural features and boost your confidence. Focus on creating a flawless complexion with the right foundation and concealer, then add subtle definition to your eyes and lips with neutral tones.
ALWAYS BE PREPARED FOR UNEXPECTED OUTINGS
Keep a small emergency kit stocked with beauty essentials such as makeup wipes, concealer, lip balm, and a travel-sized fragrance in your bag for quick touch-ups. Additionally, having a few go-to outfits in your wardrobe that can transition seamlessly from day to night ensures that you’re always ready for any spontaneous plans that come your way.
CONFIDENCE IS KEY
Above all, confidence is the ultimate accessory that completes any look. Embrace your unique style and wear it with pride, knowing that true beauty radiates from within. Stand tall, speak confidently, and carry yourself with grace and confidence wherever you go. Remember, the most beautiful thing you can wear is a genuine smile.
PRACTICE GOOD POSTURE
Good posture conveys confidence and poise and has a transformative effect on your overall appearance. Practice standing tall with your shoulders back, and your chin held high to exude presence and charisma. Not only will good posture enhance your physical appearance, but it will also positively impact your mood and energy levels.
CHOOSE COLOURS THAT COMPLEMENT YOUR SKIN TONE
Selecting colours that complement your skin tone can instantly elevate your look and enhance your natural beauty. Experiment with different shades to find the ones that flatter your complexion and make you glow from within.
MAINTAIN HEALTHY HAIR
Healthy, shiny hair is the crowning glory of any polished look. Establish a regular hair care routine that includes shampooing, conditioning, and occasional deep conditioning treatments to keep your locks soft, smooth, and manageable. Protect your hair from heat damage by using a heat protectant spray before styling with hot tools, and trim split ends regularly to prevent breakage and maintain hair health.
IFEOMA WILLIAMS ERICA NLEWEDIM TANIA OMOTAYO TOMIKE ADEOYE LINDA EDOZIENEIGHT KEYS TO FINANCIAL STABILITY IN UNCERTAIN TIMES!
In these turbulent economic times, it’s no secret that many of us are feeling the squeeze in our wallets and the weight of financial uncertainty on our shoulders. But not to worry, we are here to arm you with some savvy strategies to help you survive and thrive amidst the chaos. Here are some practical pearls of wisdom to keep your bank account happy and your stress levels in check.
By Bukola Amoboye1. Documentation
Now more than ever, you need to document and ratio your income and expenses. Having it all laid out bare makes it easier to follow the next step.
2. Assess Your Situation
With what you have documented, assess and take stock of your current situation. Understand your income, expenses, debts, and savings. This will give you a clear picture of where you stand and help you identify areas for improvement.
3. Create a Budget
A budget is your roadmap to financial stability. Take a look at all your previous expenses and arrange them on a scale of preference. Cut back on non-essential spending and prioritise essentials like housing, food, and utilities.
You don’t have to buy that shoe, you don’t have to buy that ‘aso ebi’, you don’t have to make that trip overseas, etc.
Use cheaper alternatives, e.g., public transport instead of Uber, plan a trip within Nigeria instead of overseas, etc.
4. Build an Emergency Fund
An emergency fund acts as a safety net during tough times, so allocate a portion of your income towards savings and emergency funds.
Aim to save enough to cover at least three to six months’ living expenses. Start small if you have to but make saving a priority. This financial cushion can provide peace of mind and protect you from unexpected expenses or job loss.
5. Increase Your Income
Finding ways to increase your income can provide much-needed relief during tough times. Explore opportunities for side hustles, freelance work, or part-time jobs. Also, consider upgrading your skills or pursuing
additional education to enhance your earning potential in the long term.
6. Invest
There are easily accessible platforms that can help you choose where best to invest such as Risevest, Cowrywise, Piggyvest, etc. If you’re not sure about these platforms, you can engage a professional and get advice on how and where to invest. You can start small with low-risk and short-term investments, then build your way up.
7. Practice Self-Care
Remember that financial well-being is closely linked to mental well-being and otherwise.
Take care of yourself physically, emotionally, and mentally during tough times. Engage in self-care activities like exercise, meditation, spending time with loved ones, and seeking support from friends or support groups. Avoid overthinking your financial situation; instead, actively seek solutions and follow the steps listed above.
8. Stay Positive and Flexible
Finally, maintain a positive outlook and be flexible in your approach to financial challenges. Understand that tough times are temporary and focus on the things you can control. Stay adaptable to changing circumstances and celebrate small victories along the way.
The Keto Craze
Ah, the ketogenic diet – a high-fat, low-carb eating plan that has taken the dieting world by storm. Advocates of keto rave about its ability to promote rapid weight loss and improve energy levels. By drastically reducing carbs and replacing them with fats, the body enters a state of ketosis, where it burns fat for fuel. While some people have seen remarkable results with keto, it’s not without its drawbacks. Many find the strict carb restrictions challenging to sustain long-term, leading to what’s commonly referred to as the “keto flu” – a collection of symptoms that include fatigue, irritability, and brain fog as the body adjusts to the new fuel source. Moreover, the emphasis on high-fat foods can sometimes lead to a less-than-ideal lipid profile, with concerns raised about its impact on heart health.
Intermittent Fasting
Enter intermittent fasting, the practice of cycling between periods of eating and fasting. Proponents praise it for its simplicity and flexibility, claiming benefits such as improved metabolism and enhanced fat burning. With variations like the 16/8 method (fasting for 16 hours and eating within an 8-hour window) or the 5:2 approach (eating normally for five days and restricting calories for two non-consecutive days), it’s no wonder many have jumped on the fasting bandwagon.
However, intermittent fasting isn’t suitable for everyone. Some individuals may experience increased irritability and difficulty concentrating during fasting periods, which can potentially exacerbate disordered eating patterns in those prone to such behaviours. Additionally, focusing on when to eat rather than what to eat may lead to overlooking the importance of nutrient-dense foods and balanced meals.
Plant-Based Power
In recent years, the plant-based lifestyle has garnered significant
FAD DIETS: NAVIGATING THE MAZE OF TRENDY EATING
By Oroma JumboWhen it comes to weight loss, the internet is filled with promises of quick fixes and miraculous transformations. Also, Instagram influencers and celebrities tout the latest diet trends as the holy grail of health and wellness, and it’s easy to get caught up in the whirlwind of trendy eating. The allure of these diets is undeniable, but are they the key to long-term health?
Before diving headfirst into the next big craze, let’s look at the pros and cons of a few popular diet plans and explore why lifestyle changes may be the key to long-term health and wellness.
attention, with many embracing veganism for its purported health benefits and ethical considerations.
Advocates of the vegan diet tout its potential to lower the risk of chronic diseases and its positive impact on the environment. By emphasising whole, plant-based foods and omitting animal products, individuals may experience weight loss and improved digestion.
Going vegan isn’t a one-size-fits-all solution. Without proper planning, it’s easy to fall into the trap of relying on processed vegan substitutes that may lack essential nutrients.
People may also find it challenging to meet their protein needs, leading to feelings of weakness or lethargy.
Furthermore, the social implications of adhering to a vegan diet, such as limited options at social gatherings or when dining out, can present significant challenges for some.
The Path to Sustainable Eating
While these diet plans have their merits, it’s essential to remember that sustainable and long-term health isn’t about quick fixes or extreme restrictions. Instead, it’s about making
balanced and mindful choices that support overall well-being. Rather than hopping from one trend to the next, consider embracing a lifestyle that prioritises whole, nutrient-dense foods and regular physical activity.
- Ultimately, the best “diet” isn’t a diet at all – it’s a lifestyle that fosters a positive, healthy and sustainable relationship with food.

TRANSFORMATIVE LEADERSHIP AT IKEJA ELECTRIC
Folake Soetan’s foray into Ikeja Electric in 2015 marked the beginning of a transformative era for the company. Joining as the Deputy Chief Commercial Officer, she was immediately tasked with spearheading strategies to curtail commercial and collection losses, a challenge she met with innovative approaches and a keen focus on customer service. The essence of her role was to turn around the company’s fortunes by enhancing customer experience and instilling a culture of efficiency and accountability within the team. Her arrival coincided with a crucial phase in Ikeja Electric’s journey, as the newly privatised entity embarked on an ambitious Asset Mapping and Customer Enumeration program to refine the company’s database to serve its customers better.
The rapid ascent of Soetan within Ikeja Electric is a testament to her exceptional leadership and strategic vision. Within a year, she was promoted to Chief Commercial Officer, a role in which she orchestrated some of the most significant commercial turnarounds in the industry. Her team’s initiatives to combat energy theft, address estimated billing concerns, and improve customer complaints resolution were groundbreaking. These efforts significantly reduced commercial and collection losses, establishing new benchmarks in the sector.
2019 marked another milestone in Soetan’s illustrious career as she assumed the position of Chief Operating Officer. In this capacity, she broadened her transformative impact beyond the Commercial Department to include Technical and other key operations. Under her guidance, the quality of power supply in the Ikeja franchise areas improved remarkably, with average availability increasing from 12 to about 16 hours daily. A notable achievement during her tenure was the successful implementation of the Bilateral Power initiative – a pioneering WillingBuyer-Willing-Seller scheme in Nigeria that guaranteed customers a minimum of 20 hours of power supply through the National Grid.
Prior to joining Ikeja Electric, Soetan’s career was marked by notable successes in various roles. Her tenure at Virgin Nigeria and SO Aviation, a Sahara Group company in Lagos, was characterised by significant turnarounds and market share growth. In Ghana, as the Vice President (Downstream) of West Africa, she oversaw the operations of three Sahara subsidiary companies, further honing her skills in change management and business transformation.
Folake Soetan’s academic credentials are equally impressive. A graduate of Banking and Finance from the University of Lagos, she is an alumnus of Harvard Business School, where she acquired certification in Advanced Management. Over the last 20 years, she has accumulated a wealth of knowledge and expertise, underpinned by numerous professional certifications.
In this conversation with Funke Babs Kufeji, we not only celebrate her achievements but also draw inspiration from her journey. It is an insightful interview that sheds light on her career trajectory, struggles and achievements and role in breaking gender stereotypes.

Women are winning worldwide, especially in Nigeria, breaking stereotypes and shattering the glass ceiling. They are also holding top positions in the banking sector, tech, and now the power sector. Please tell us what you think is responsible for this shift.
Absolutely, it’s incredibly inspiring to see women making strides in various sectors. I believe there are several factors contributing to this shift. Firstly, there’s been a growing recognition of women’s value and capability in leadership roles. Companies and organisations are realising the importance of diversity and inclusion, not just as a moral imperative but also as a strategic advantage. Additionally, initiatives focusing on empowering women, providing mentorship, and breaking down systemic barri-
ers have played a significant role. Women themselves are also stepping up, pushing boundaries, and challenging stereotypes, paving the way for future generations.
Another important factor has been flexible work arrangements. Offering flexible work options helps women balance work and personal responsibilities, enabling them to stay competitive and progress in their careers.
What should be done to keep the ball rolling so that more women take up key roles in gender-biased sectors?
To keep the momentum going, we need to continue advocating for gender equality at all levels. This includes implementing policies that promote equal opportunities
for women, such as gender quotas and pay transparency measures. Mentorship and sponsorship programs are also crucial for nurturing female talent and providing them with the support and guidance they need to advance in their careers. Additionally, creating a culture that values diversity and inclusion is essential for attracting and retaining top female talent. Ultimately, it’s about creating an environment where women feel empowered to pursue leadership roles and where their contributions are recognised and rewarded.
You currently sit at the top as the CEO of Ikeja Electric. Can you tell us briefly about your journey to the top?
Certainly! My journey to the CEO position at Ikeja Electric has been filled with challenges, learning experiences, and personal growth. began my career in the aviation sector, where I honed my leadership skills and developed a passion for driving positive change. From there, I transitioned to the oil and gas industry, gaining valuable insights into the complexities of the energy sector. When the opportunity arose to join Ikeja Electric, saw it as a chance to make a meaningful impact in an industry that plays a critical role in powering our society. Through hard work, dedication, and a commitment to excellence, I’ve been able to rise through the ranks and take on the role of CEO, where I’m proud to lead a team of talented individuals dedicated to delivering reliable and efficient electricity services to our customers.
What did you do to prepare you for your job as CEO of Ikeja Electric, which is the largest electricity distribution network in Nigeria and Sub-Saharan Africa?
Preparing for the role of CEO at Ikeja Electric required a combination of continuous learning and adaptability, building a solid network (having a tribe), experience, honing my leadership and communication skills, and deepening my knowledge of the power sector. Throughout my career, I’ve sought out opportunities to expand my knowledge and skills in areas relevant to the energy sector, including leadership development, strategic planning, and stakeholder management. I’ve also actively sought out mentors and advisors who have provided valuable guidance and support along the way. Additionally, I’ve remained open to feedback and constructive criticism, always striving to improve and grow as a leader. often sourced from the oil and gas sector. Similarly, the power/electricity sector plays a critical role in powering essential infrastructure, including airports and oil refineries. By recognising and leveraging these synergies, we can create opportunities for collaboration and innovation that benefit all sectors involved.
Since you assumed office as CEO, what significant marks and strides have you been able to achieve?
Since taking on the role of CEO, I’m proud to say that Ikeja Electric has made significant strides in several key areas. One of our primary focuses has been improving the quality of our customer service. We’ve made tremendous progress through targeted investments in infrastructure upgrades and maintenance, even though we’re still determining where we aim to be. Additionally, we’ve placed a strong emphasis on customer engagement and satisfaction, leveraging technology and implementing initiatives such as digital platforms for bill payment and electricity token vending, smart distribution transformers installation at various communities, fault passage indicators, and CRM solutions for effective customer management and complaint resolution to enhance the customer experience. Furthermore, we’ve made significant progress in promoting gender diversity and inclusion within our organisation, implementing policies and programs to support the advancement of women in leadership roles. The success of our initiatives in this regard led to the recognition of Ikeja Electric as the “Most Gender Diverse Utility Company” at the prestigious Nigeria Power Sector Awards. Overall, I’m proud of our progress. However, I recognise that there is still much work to be done to continue driving positive change and delivering value to our customers and stakeholders.
You are big on gender diversity. How were you able to break stereotypes regarding gender at Ikeja Electric?
barriers or systemic inequalities that need to be addressed. However, we’ve been proactive in addressing these challenges head-on, engaging with employees and stakeholders to raise awareness and build consensus around the importance of gender diversity. By being transparent, communicative, and inclusive in our approach, we’ve overcome pushback and made meaningful progress towards our diversity and inclusion goals.
Why is gender diversity important to you, and what should more CEOs do to make sure men and women are equally represented in the workspace?
Gender diversity is not only the right thing to do from a moral and ethical standpoint, but it’s also essential for driving innovation, creativity, and business success. Research has consistently shown that diverse teams outperform homogeneous ones, bringing a wider range of perspectives, experiences, and ideas to the table. As CEO, it’s important to me because I believe in creating a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to thrive and reach their full potential, regardless of gender. To ensure that men and women are equally represented in the workplace, CEOs need to prioritise diversity and inclusion as strategic imperatives. This means setting clear diversity goals, holding leaders accountable for progress, and creating an inclusive culture where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute. It also requires proactive efforts to identify and address unconscious biases and systemic barriers that may be hindering gender diversity. Ultimately, gender diversity should be viewed not as a box to be checked but as a fundamental driver of organisational performance and success.

What
does International Women’s Day mean to you?
International Women’s Day holds immense significance for me personally and professionally. It’s a day to celebrate the achievements and contributions of women worldwide and reflect on the progress we’ve made towards gender equality. It’s a reminder of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights and empowerment and a call to action to address the challenges and bar-
You have worked in the aviation sector, the oil and gas sector and now in the power/electricity sector; tell us which you find most fulfilling.
That’s a great question. Each sector you mentioned brought its unique challenges and rewards. Still, if had to choose, would say that working in the power/electricity sector has been the most fulfilling for me personally. Electricity is such a fundamental aspect of modern life, and being able to play a role in ensuring that people have access to reliable and affordable energy is incredibly rewarding. Additionally, the energy sector is undergoing a period of rapid transformation, with advancements in renewable energy, grid modernisation, and digitalisation creating new opportunities for innovation and growth. Being at the forefront of these developments and driving positive change in the power sector has been both challenging and immensely fulfilling.
Will you say there is a synergy in these sectors and why?
Absolutely, a significant synergy exists between the aviation, oil and gas, and power/electricity sectors. At their core, all of these industries are essential components of the global economy, providing the infrastructure and resources necessary for economic development and growth. In addition, they are all highly interconnected, with each sector relying on the other for various inputs and services. For example, the aviation industry depends on a reliable jet fuel supply,
Gender diversity is a key imperative at Ikeja Electric, and we’ve worked hard to create an inclusive culture where everyone, regardless of gender, has equal opportunities to succeed. One of the keyways we’ve been able to break stereotypes is by leading by example. As CEO, I’ve made it a priority to champion gender diversity and inclusion at all levels of the organisation, both through my words and actions. This includes transparent recruitment and promotion processes based on merit rather than gender, ensuring talent and capabilities are the primary criteria for advancement. Similarly, we actively promote and support the advancement of qualified women [and men] into leadership roles and create a supportive work environment where everyone feels valued and respected.
Additionally, we’ve implemented policies and programs to address gender bias and discrimination, such as unconscious bias training and flexible work arrangements. By promoting a culture of inclusivity and equality, we’re breaking down stereotypes and creating opportunities for all employees to thrive. Equally, we enthusiastically challenge the bias that certain traditional roles are meant for a particular gender by advocating and showcasing women in technical field. By showcasing successful women in this field, we challenge outdated stereotypes and inspire change. In Ikeja Electric today, we have female linesmen.
Did you face any pushbacks or challenges when you started implementing it?
Certainly, promoting gender diversity and inclusion hasn’t been without its challenges. Like any major cultural shift, overcoming resistance and ingrained biases requires time, effort, and persistence. Some individuals may resist change or hold outdated beliefs about gender roles in the workplace. Additionally, there may be institutional
The progress that women have made in the private sector is undoubtedly inspiring, but there’s still work to be done to ensure that women are equally represented in public office. One way to translate this momentum to the public sector is by encouraging and supporting more women to run for political office. This includes providing aspiring female politicians with financial support, campaign training, and mentorship. Additionally, political parties can play a role by adopting gender quotas and other affirmative action measures to increase the representation of women in their ranks. It’s also important to address the structural barriers and systemic inequalities that may be hindering women’s participation in politics, such as lack of access to resources, gender-based violence, and cultural stereotypes. By working together to dismantle these barriers and create a more inclusive and supportive political environment, we can ensure that women have an equal voice and seat at the table in shaping the future of our society.
It’s important for more women to get involved in politics. Especially technocrats like yourself, do you see yourself running for public office?
As a technocrat and advocate for gender diversity, I totally agree that it’s crucial for more women to get involved in politics. Their unique perspectives and expertise make a difference in shaping policies and decisions that affect all of us. As for me running for public office, I’m really passionate about my current role as CEO of Ikeja Electric. believe can make a significant impact right where I am, working to improve the energy sector and promote gender equality. Regardless, remain committed to supporting women in politics and working towards a more inclusive and representative democracy for all Nigerians.
What advice do you have for a woman starting her career in the power sector and also trying to transition from one industry to another?
For a woman starting her career in the power sector or seeking to transition from one industry to another, I advise embracing opportunities for learning, growth, and skill development. The energy sector is dynamic and
riers that still exist. For me, International Women’s Day is not just a day of celebration but also a day of solidarity and advocacy. It’s an opportunity to amplify the voices of women, advocate for gender equality, and inspire future generations of women leaders.
Why is this day important, and what does this year’s theme, “Inspire Inclusion”, mean to you?
International Women’s Day is important because it serves as a powerful reminder of the need for continued efforts to achieve gender equality and empower women and girls worldwide. The theme “Inspire Inclusion” resonates deeply with me because it speaks to the importance of creating environments where everyone feels valued, respected, and included, regardless of gender. Inclusion is not just about diversity in numbers but about creating a culture where everyone’s perspectives are heard and everyone has equal opportunities to thrive. By inspiring inclusion, we can break down barriers, challenge stereotypes, and create a more equitable and just society for all.

By Funke Babs-Kufejihe fight for women’s involvement in politics and the workforce, from the right to vote to the right to equal pay, is commemorated on International Women’s Day. It is celebrated each year on the 8th of March, but you will be shocked to know that some women don’t even know there is a day such as this, and some don’t even have a clue how it came to be. If you fall into any of these categories and want to know more about the day, here are five major things to learn about the day the world is reminded of the patriarchy’s lasting influence.
Are you familiar with International Women’s Day? It’s not just any ordinary day; it’s a powerful reminder of the ongoing struggle for women’s rights. Held annually on March 8th, this day commemorates the relentless fight for women’s involvement in politics and the workforce. From securing the right to vote to demanding equal pay, it’s a day filled with significance. But did you know that some women aren’t even aware of its existence? It’s shocking, right? If you’re curious to learn more about this pivotal day and its origins, here are five key things you should know.
Who to Thank
Who started it
The Americans! In 1909, a strong socialist party existed in the United States, and they celebrated International Women’s Day to honour a women’s strike at a garment factory the year before.
Leading German Communist Clara Zetkin promoted the concept throughout Europe in 1910 at the International Conference of Socialist Women.
In 1914, women protested for the right to vote in Berlin, marking the inaugural March 8 celebration.
March 8th was formally declared International Women’s Day in 1977 by the United Nations and other international groups.
What Happens On IWD
In most parts of the world, including Nigeria, it’s just another working day where many people struggle to break through the glass ceiling. Sometimes, women will meet up for lectures and dialogue on the year’s theme and then go back to work. So, that pretty much wraps up the day. Unless you reside in one of the following countries: Russia, Uganda, Mongolia, Georgia, Laos, Cambodia, Armenia, Belarus, or Ukraine, where March 8 is a public holiday, in China, many women are given a half-day off work.
The Symbol and Colours of International Women’s Day
The feminine gender sign represents International Women’s Day. The colours used are purple, white, and green. White stands for purity, green for hope, and purple for justice and dignity. The Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU) in the UK is where the colours first appeared in 1908.
There is a Theme Each Year
Every International Women’s Day since 1996 has had an official theme for women worldwide.”Celebrating the Past, planning for the Future” was the very first theme that the UN adopted in 1996.
The IWD 2024 campaign theme is Inspire Inclusion. We forge a better world when we inspire others to understand and value women’s inclusion.
And when women themselves are inspired to be included, there’s a sense of belonging, relevance and empowerment.
The #InspireInclusion campaign aims to forge a more inclusive world for women.

KAYODE KASUM’S “ONE TOO MANY’’ TAKES A STAND AGAINST CORRUPTION AND ABUSE OF POWER.
Plot Summary Set against the backdrop of a society plagued by corruption and abuse of power, “One Too Many” follows the tumultuous journey of Adesua, portrayed with raw emotion by Dakore Akande. From the moment she witnesses her father’s brutal encounter with law enforcement to her own harrowing experience of sexual abuse, Adesua’s life becomes a relentless battleground against the forces of oppression.
After getting pregnant, she is estranged from her family and for twenty-two years, she successfully protects her son from the horrors she has had to endure all her life. However, in one moment of seemingly harmless inquisition, Adesua’s son becomes ensnared in a web of false accusations and betrayal. She is then forced to relieve old nightmares and revisit old ghosts as she embarks on a relentless quest to unearth the truth and secure justice for her family.
Through heart-wrenching trials and tribulations, “One Too Many” paints a stark portrait of the endur-
ing scars left by police brutality and the undaunted spirit of those who refuse to be silenced.
What we Love About It.
First of all, it is directed by Kayode Kasum, so you know you’re in for a treat.
From its powerhouse ensemble cast, including the remarkable performances of Dakore Akande, Chimezie Imo, Tope Tedela, Funsho Adeolu, the late Rachel Oniga, Jide Kosoko, Temi Fosudo and more, “One Too Many” boasts a roster of talent that elevates the film to soaring heights. Each actor imbues their character with a depth and authenticity that resonates long after the credits roll.
Kasum’s directorial prowess shines through in every frame, with intentional cinematography and production design that altogether enhances the evocative storytelling that grips the audience from start to finish.

By Bukola Amoboye“With the continued focus on police brutality being a crucial issue, ‘One Too Many’ stands out as a deeply moving narrative. It explores the distressing truths of systemic injustice, offering a poignant and eye-opening perspective.”
Directed by the visionary Kayode Kasum, this movie unravels a multi-generational saga of trauma, resilience, and the relentless pursuit of justice.
ematic experience that is simple yet immersive.
The screenplay was well written for the most part, leaving out bits of information here and there and revealing them just at the right time to propel the next action.
At the heart of “One Too Many” lies a searing indictment of societal ills, masterfully portrayed through themes of police brutality, corruption, sexual abuse, and the enduring quest for redemption.
Funsho Adeolu and Temi Fosudo also deliver chilling performances as corrupt policemen, serving as catalysts for the audience’s righteous fury and indignation.
In the end, justice was served on a platter of gold, and nothing is more satisfying than seeing your villains get just what they deserve in the way they deserve.
We also Think That ....... It could have been more.
While “One Too Many” succeeds in delivering a compelling narrative, we find ourselves yearning for a deeper layer of suspense and complexity. Though compelling, the plot unfolds relatively straightforwardly, leaving little room for unexpected twists or turns.
Despite the satisfying conclusion, there remains a lingering sense of wanting more—a desire for the stakes to feel even higher, the challenges even more insurmountable. It’s a minor quibble in an otherwise stellar film, but one worth noting, nonetheless.
Our Take
“One Too Many” is a powerful example of the cinema’s ability to highlight the darkest aspects of our society and spark conversations that call for change.
With its gripping narrative, powerhouse performances, and exploration of timely themes, this is a film that demands to be seen. The movie premiered on Netflix Nigeria recently and is a must-watch for anyone seeking a thoughtprovoking cinematic experience. So, grab your popcorn, settle in, and prepare to be moved by a story that resonates long after the screen fades to black.

‘’I’d rather purchase a product I’ve seen used by a consumer just like me than from a strategically planned advert where everyone in the video reads from a script.
OMOTOLA IGBENOBA
Interview by Oroma JumboAfew months back, while scrolling through Instagram, I stumbled upon a suggested post from a “UGC” page, and it piqued my interest. As with social media and the internet, a simple interaction with a particular type of content can set off a chain reaction of algorithmic suggestions, leading to the discovery of similar pages and content.
With my curiosity piqued, I delved deeper into the world of user-generated content, or UGC as its commonly known. So, what exactly is UGC? It’s nothing short of a game-changer!
Imagine a world where you have the power to create and share your stories, photos, videos, and experiences with the world. That’s the magic of UGC - it’s all about everyday people like you and me contributing to the content we love to consume.
UGC doesn’t simply end at consumers generating content featuring products they adore. With the appropriate strategies, the generated content can be monetised and marketed to brands, offering a new avenue for earning income by being compensated for providing honest product reviews.
I met Omotola Igbenoba at an event, and alongside being a YouTuber, she was the first Nigerian I met in Nigeria who introduced herself to me as a UGC content creator, so of course, I had to pick her brain on what it’s like exploring that field and monetising it.
Can you share the story of how you started your YouTube channel with us? What inspired you to become a digital content creator?
In August 2022, had just been placed on bed rest from surgery, so I had unlimited time to surf from one app to the other. I watched so many movies and vlogs and travelled from Snapchat – to Instagram – to TikTok every day. One morning, I thought to myself, “When I’m back on my feet, I’ll finally start my YouTube channel.” didn’t even know where the content would come from; I only knew I needed to start my channel ASAP. Fast forward to almost two years later, I have put out content weekly, and I don’t intend to stop.
The first upload on my channel was an introductory video, and from there, I shaped my channel into lifestyle, beauty, fashion, and travel vlogs.
What challenges did you face when you initially started? How did you overcome them?
Hmmm… would say getting content ideas and ensuring I post at peak periods. Those two were my major challenges. My minor challenges were always people looking at me weirdly when I was filming in public. Oh, they always gave me the “stare”.
As days turned into months, I kept learning how my YouTube insights worked; I watched many other vlogs to get inspiration. I pen out so many ideas in my head and filter them based on what has done well and what hasn’t done well in the past on my channel.
As for people staring at me in public, had to grow a thick skin. Whether you are filming or not, people will always stare at you, so give them a show. I like to get my job done and keep pushing! always don’t want to get back home and regret not taking some shots.
How has social media influencing on platforms like Instagram com-
plemented your YouTube presence? How do you leverage both platforms to engage with your audience?
I have a broader audience on Instagram, so always post on my Instagram whenever I have a new video up on my channel; that way, I can draw the attention of my Instagram followers to my YouTube channel. With YouTube, can only reply to comments, but with Instagram, I can chat with some of my subscribers when they send me DM’s, and that makes interaction a bit more personal.
UGC has become a significant trend in digital content creation. Could you explain to our readers how you first learned about UGC and what it means to you as a content creator?
I was scrolling through TikTok one day and stumbled on a video that wasn’t advertising a product but also was simultaneously advertising it. I went ahead to scroll through this person’s profile, and she has many posts about UGC. I researched UGC, and I had my light bulb moment. I already loved creating content and staying at home (LOL), so I might as well learn more about UGC and make this a job.
UGC (User Generated Content) means get to express myself creatively by bringing to life the ideas have in my head. I like to say it’s a form of me bringing my intelligence to life. The best part is you don’t need a large following on any platform to be a UGC creator. UGC doesn’t give the “what if people don’t buy the product or don’t like it?” pressure. That’s for influencers!
What are the key advantages of incorporating UGC into your content strategy?
give them something to watch.
How do you ensure the quality and authenticity of user-generated content you feature on your platforms?
Do you have any tips for content creators who want to incorporate UGC into their strategies?
Most of the brands I’ve worked with are ones that have patronised before. Now, one might only be able to purchase these items sometimes, but once a brand sends me a package, I use it for a few days before creating a script for the client and then moving on to creating the content. I must use it and love it. That way, my videos are coming from the heart.
Think of UGC as a fun job. You are the user; you are simply just creating content with a brand that you use. Be it soap, lip gloss or perfume. You are the user! As a user, how would you pass a message across to other intending users??
Could you share a memorable experience or success story related to UGC that significantly impacted your career as a content creator?
After doing my research, I created so many UGC-related videos, and I also went ahead and created my portfolio. After doing all that, I sent out so many emails and got no response for months. I didn’t give up; returned to my drawing board and concluded that Nigerians don’t read their emails.
How has it enhanced your relationship with your audience?
I’d rather purchase a product I’ve seen used by a consumer just like me than from a strategically planned advert where everyone in the video reads from a script.
The advantage of UGC is that people trust the products I create content with. They know one way or the other, I’ve used this product, and my content isn’t created in a way that persuades them to buy… NO! It’s created in a way that attracts my audience to the product. always ask myself. “If you saw this video elsewhere, would you be attracted to the product?”. Once I like a brand, I will keep singing the praises of that brand to anyone who cares to listen.
Many marketers believe that UGC is the future of marketing. In your opinion, why is UGC such a powerful tool for brands and businesses? How do you see it shaping the marketing landscape in the future?
Many customers trust the reviews and recommendations shared by people rather than advertisements. Incorporating UGC into a company’s marketing strategy helps build trust and authenticity for the company or brand. 79% of people, if not more, say UGC highly impacts their purchasing decisions.
I’d rather purchase a product I’ve seen used by a consumer just like me than from a strategically planned advert where everyone in the video reads from a script.
The world in which we live has everyone making use of their platform one way or the other. People leave reviews or make videos about items they purchased, whether they have been paid for it or not. UGC will always be a marketing strategy because people like to listen to others when they speak and spend hours on social media. We might as well
On a particular morning, checked my DM. There it was a makeup brand was ready to work with me. I sent in my rates, and I was a bit scared because it was my first gig, and I wasn’t budging on the fee charged. Now, it was only me who knew that was my first gig. The client didn’t know that was my first gig, so I stood my ground with my rate even though I was so scared. The moment I read “send me back details”, I was overjoyed!! screamed, saying to myself, “If I can get paid once for UGC, I certainly will make millions from it,” since then, I have never stopped pushing, emailing, learning and much more.
Generating earnings from UGC is a topic of interest. Can you shed light on your different monetisation strategies for user-generated content? How do you strike a balance between creating valuable content and earning revenue?
My rates vary from what the clients want. I also give them package deals where needed. I have rates for one, two or three organic videos. Some may include images/ hooks, and sometimes both. It’s also a separate rate for content that will be used for sponsored posts. Because they intend to make money off content, I’ve created for them, I add extra percentages for content that will be used for sponsored adverts.
The love for the job is simply enough balance for me. Because I enjoy doing what I do, I don’t focus on the earnings. Don’t get me wrong, love the money, but I also enjoy creating the content. enjoy prepping my set and editing. That enough gives me the energy to think of the content properly and make sure deliver nothing but the best.
As a lifestyle magazine, we want our readers to understand the potential of UGC. How do you envision UGC shaping the future of marketing and content creation?
see people relying on what another person has said about a product before purchasing it because I do it all the time. I read reviews and watch so many videos before making purchases. use other people’s reviews as a deciding factor when shopping, and it has been a game changer.
