WOMEN IN ENERGY
MARGERY CHUBA-OKADIGBO EMPOWERING
As the first female NNPC Chairman, she is breaking new grounds and paving the way for more women to take on leadership roles in the oil and gas industry. In this interview with Konye Chelsea Nwabogor, she speaks on creating a voice for other women in the male-dominated oil sector and the strategies that should be put in place to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions in the industry.
More female leaders, please
What found most exciting about this week’s Cover feature was that a woman was given a chance to lead in a male-dominated sector. Yes, it’s something we are beginning to see more of, but it is still a rarity in some sectors. You know, for the longest time, Nigeria, like many other countries around the world, have faced a gender leadership gap. Women remain underrepresented in leadership positions, particularly in the political arena. And even though we have made a lot of progress, women still face significant barriers when taking up leadership roles. It’s not uncommon to hear complaints of discrimination, harassment, bias and double standards. The last one stands out for me.
One of the most common accusations against women in leadership positions is that they are “brash’’ - a label rarely applied to men, who instead are praised for being confident and assertive. When you hear this statement, it is often directed at women who speak their minds, assert their opinions, and generally take charge, traits that are 100% admired in male leaders.
Anyway, the tide is changing, and it is high time that we as a society recognise this and be more encouraging of female leaders in all sectors. They represent half of the world’s population, and their leadership skills and qualities should be harnessed for the betterment of society. We must acknowledge that giving them equal opportunities to lead is not just a matter of justice but also social and economic development. Studies have shown that companies with more women in leadership positions tend to perform better financially. They bring diversity, creativity, and a unique perspective to decision-making, leading to better problem-solving and innovation. By giving room to this mindset set, we can tap into the vast potential of half of the population and bring about positive changes in various aspects of life, such as education, healthcare, politics, and the economy. want to thank the men who have embraced the ‘’He for She’’ movement and are doing all they can to place women in positions of power. Men who recognise the importance of gender equality and actively work to support women in leadership positions. We see you, we love you, and we appreciate you. For those yet to get with the program, this is your cue to start by advocating for policies that promote gender equality, mentoring and sponsoring women in leadership positions, and challenging sexism and discrimination in the workplace. Thank you.
Love, Konye

THE “EFFORTLESSLY COOL” POWER OF SNEAKERS
Over the years, we have watched sneakers evolve from being a type of footwear used in athletic activities to a fashion piece that has become a staple in our wardrobes. Due to their sleek designs and ability to complement almost every outfit, sneakers have gained a widespread reputation as symbols of the “effortlessly cool” style. Not yet with the program? Keep reading to find out why you should own at least two pairs.
By Shola-Adido Oladotun
Finding a balance
Unlike pumps or boots, sneakers are the perfect definition of comfort and style. In addition to making a fashion statement when paired with either a mini dress or ankara pants, sneakers also help support your feet. In other words, gone are the days when you used to carry a pair of slippers to change into if your legs started hurting from wearing heels.
A realm of possibilities
When it comes to sneakers, the choices are almost endless. Whether it’s the classic white or a tie-and-dye print, sneakers make it hard for you to select what option to go with when you are at a store or staring into your wardrobe.
Hello, Versatile
Sometimes, what your outfit needs to be the belle of the ball is a simple pair of sneakers. The best thing about styling sneakers is that they are versatile and can be worn in various settings. For example, if you have two events: a picnic and a dinner date, rather than setting aside two pairs of footwear, you could opt for a pair of white sneakers and pair them with a casual and almost formal outfit. Basically, sneakers can be dressed up or down, making them the perfect shoe for any occasion.
Blurred gender lines
If you tend to explore the genderneutral side of fashion, our best advice would be to get ready to be a sneakerhead. The unique selling point of sneakers is their ability to appeal to both genders, disregarding gender norms. Another way to look at this is by making sneakers a “his/her” fashion piece for you and your partner.
The double A’s You don’t have to completely break the bank to snag a pair of sneakers. They are both affordable and accessible. The former and latter imply that you can easily get them anywhere and for a reasonable price.

WHAT MEDIUM NAVIGATES TRENDS NOWADAYS; FASHION MAGAZINES OR SOCIAL MEDIA INFLUENCERS?
Fashion is an ever-evolving industry, with new trends emerging every season. But who exactly is responsible for dictating these trends? Is it the glossy pages of fashion magazines or the Instagram feeds of social media influencers? While both have advantages, it’s important to consider which avenue will give you the best insights into current fashion trends. Magazines have long been the go-to source for fashion inspiration. From Vogue to Harper’s Bazaar and yours truly THISDAY Style, these publications showcase the latest collections from high-end designers and feature editorials styled by some of the industry’s top professionals. The images that grace these pages are meticulously curated, with every detail carefully thought out to create a specific mood or convey a particular message.
Magazines significantly influence the fashion industry, with their recommendations often determining which designers and brands become popular. They have the power to shape the conversation around fashion, influencing what people wear and how they style it. The fashion industry has long relied on magazines to set the tone for each season, with designers eagerly waiting for their collections to be featured on the pages of these publications.
However, in recent years, social media influencers have emerged as a major force in fashion. With massive followings and highly engaged audiences, influencers have slowly begun to shape trends and determine what’s “in” and “out.” Many of these influencers have become celebrities in their own right, with designers clamouring to dress them and brands eager to collaborate on sponsored content.
Whether they find their inspiration in the pages of a magazine or on their favourite influencer’s Instagram feed, the most important thing is that they feel confident and comfortable in what they’re wearing.
Influencers have a unique ability to showcase fashion in a way that feels relatable
and accessible. They often feature more affordable brands and highlight how to style them in everyday situations. Their content is highly visual and easily shareable, making it easy for trends to spread quickly across social media platforms.
Another strong point for the influencers is their ability to offer real-time updates on trends. They can share photos and videos of themselves wearing the latest styles as soon as they hit the runway, giving their followers an immediate glimpse into what’s hot right now. This is particularly useful for those who want to stay ahead of the curve and be the first to try new trends.
However, there are also drawbacks to relying solely on influencers. As with any social media platform, separating genuine content from sponsored posts can be difficult. Influencers may also be more likely to promote fast fashion brands or sponsorships that do not align with sustainable or ethical practices. Additionally, their opinions are often influenced by brand deals, making it difficult to know whether their recommendations are genuine or driven by financial gain.
So who has the upper hand in dictating fashion trends? The answer, we believe, is both magazines and influencers. While magazines may still set the tone for highend fashion, influencers have the power to shape trends in a more accessible and relatable way. The two work together, with magazines featuring influencers on their pages and influencers referencing the latest magazine spreads in their content. At the end of the day, it’s the consumer who decides what trends they want to follow. Whether they find their inspiration in the pages of a magazine or on their favourite influencer’s Instagram feed, the most important thing is that they feel confident and comfortable in what they’re wearing. As long as fashion continues to evolve and adapt to the changing times, both magazines and influencers will have a role to play in shaping the trends of the future.

MARGERY CHUBA-OKADIGBO
Empowering Women in Energy
The oil and gas industry has traditionally been male-dominated, with women accounting for only a small percentage of the workforce. According to a report, women make up just 9% of the Nigerian oil and gas industry workforce, with even lower representation at senior management levels. This right here is precisely why Margery Chuba Okadigbo’s appointment as Chairman of the Board and Management of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) marks a significant milestone for gender equality and diversity in Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Margery, a Nigerian lawyer, former Senator and wife to the Late Chuba Okadigbo, who served as Senate president of Nigeria from 1999 to 2000, has an impressive track record of public service and leadership. With her appointment, she brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to the table as she deeply understands the Nigerian political landscape and has advocated for women’s rights and gender equality throughout her career.
As the first female Chairman of the Board of Directors at NNPC Limited, what do you believe your appointment represents for gender equality and diversity in the oil and gas industry?
I would like to start with what it means to me and what believe it represents for the industry. I believe that leaders are ordained by God before man. So am firstly grateful to God for the opportunity to serve him and the Nigerian people through this role and to His Excellency, President Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, for finding me worthy. I believe my role represents a significant milestone for gender equality and diversity in the oil and gas industry with potential long-term benefits for both the company and the wider sector. This achievement has several positive implications, including breaking barriers that have challenged traditional gender roles and expectations in a male-dominated industry, demonstrating that women can excel in leadership positions within the energy, oil and gas sector. Through my appointment with other female board members and directors, NNPC Limited sends a clear message about the importance of diversity and inclusion, acknowledging the value of different perspectives in driving innovation and success in its progressive transition. I hope that setting such a precedent will encourage other companies in the energy, oil and gas sector, as well as other industries, to prioritise gender equality and diversity in their own leadership structures.
What unique perspectives and strategies do you bring to the role, and how do you plan to leverage them for the organisation’s success?
Under the new Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), the Chairman of NNPC Limited is responsible for providing overall direction and supervision of the company’s affairs, including providing strategic direction and guidance, ensuring compliance with laws and regulations, building relationships with stakeholders, overseeing risk management and financial performance, and promoting transparency and accountability. This role requires strong leadership, strategic thinking, and the ability to navigate complex regulatory and industry challenges, aiming to create value for shareholders and serve the Nigerian people. To this, I bring my over 40 years of experience across various spheres of my life, including my political expertise, advocacy, and stakeholder engagement skills, extensive networks, strategic vision, and commitment to corporate governance and community engagement. I continue to leverage my expertise and personality to work with the management team to navigate regulatory challenges, strengthen government and industry relationships, align its goals with societal needs, enhance transparency and accountability, and address environmental and social issues, which includes ensuring a more equitable work environment. I believe that as a team and with my leadership, we can help the NNPC Limited become a more innovative and successful company in the energy, oil and gas industry beyond Africa.
You are a trained lawyer; has that been helpful? What about your experience from your time at the Senate?
Most certainly, the guiding principles that form NNPC Limited are founded under the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), which requires clear interpretation and implementation. My legal expertise comes in handy for regulatory compliance, effective risk management, good governance and accountability, stakeholder engagement, and the ability to navigate complex legal and regulatory issues in the oil and gas industry. As a politician, bring my expertise in government relations, public policy, decision-making, networking and relationship-building, and reputation management to the table. Overall, I hope my expertise and guidance can be valuable in navigating the political and regulatory landscape of the industry, building relationships with key stakeholders, and positioning the company for long-term success.
How do you balance the interests of shareholders, the government, and the public in your decision-making process as Chairman of the Board of Directors at NNPC Limited?
It is important to know that this is not a one-man job. The board, especially the management and stakeholders, play crucial roles in this balancing act. Especially within the current and existing situations the sector is/has been experiencing over time. As Chairman, the ultimate aim is to take a thoughtful and strategic approach that considers the perspectives of all stakeholders and prioritises transparency, accountability, and ethical leadership to navigate complex decisionmaking processes and position the company for long-term success for the overall betterment of the Nigerian people.
What are your strategies for managing risks and uncertainties in the dynamic and competitive oil sector while ensuring longterm sustainability and profitability for NNPC Limited?
Managing risks and uncertainties in such a dynamic and competitive sector like the energy, oil and gas sector has always been challenging. However, all roads lead to applying strategies that promote diversification, strategic partnerships, risk assessment and management, innovation and technology, talent management, and environmental sustainability. The ultimate aim is to improve the company’s resilience, competitiveness, long-term sustainability and profitability. I believe we are making progress.
Let’s talk about gender. How have you navigated the challenges of being a leader in a male-dominated field like the oil sector, and what strategies have you employed to overcome gender biases and stereotypes?
As mentioned earlier, NNPC Limited continues to make actionable statements and walk its talk for gender equity within the industry. This is evident in my position and other women leaders in the industry. This is not to

say that more cannot be done. However, we must acknowledge the progress being made as well as commend male leaders within NNPC limited who have been committed to ‘’he for she”. We continue to take the lead in promoting and advocating for policies and initiatives that support women’swomen’s advancement in the industry.
My late husband admired brilliance, integrity and strength. Some of which I have demonstrated alongside him and the past 20 years after he left us (bless his soul). much higher, and this needs to be addressed. However, to do so, we must develop data-driven systems for measuring, monitoring and evaluating gender equity in the Nigerian energy sector to appreciate the extent of the challenge and then address the gaps accordingly.
We also have to address root causes like cultural and social biases, which continue to define gender roles in our society that discourages female education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM). As we all know,” “ When girls are educated in STEM, they have the power to transform their communities and the world.” I believe we must be able to catch them young.
We must create platforms for women and girls to access scholarships, mentorship, advocacy, and continuous education in technical and leadership skills. Breaking the barriers of gender inequality would be ineffective without the government’s active participation, which must be deliberate in promoting policy initiatives that mainstream gender at all levels. A good start would be to impose mandatory gender quotas in ministries, professional bodies, public and private corporate boards and management levels. Energy policies and programmes must integrate gender and diversity-based analysis to combat discrimination. Such policies should be supported by legislation, and women in government must be courageous to influence this change.
Your late husband, Chuba Okadigbo, was one of the most prominent politicians in Igbo land. How has his influence shaped your career and leadership style, and what lessons have you learned from his legacy?
My late husband was well known for his significant contributions to Nigeria’s political landscape. He left behind a multifaceted legacy as a Legislative Leadership, an advocate for democracy, his intellectual contributions and mentors. I believe he inspired several men and women who encountered him personally, and I am no different. People do not marry far from who they are. My late husband admired brilliance, integrity and strength. Some of which have demonstrated alongside him and the past 20 years after he left us (bless his soul). I contested for election, won and sat on the same senatorial seat my husband previously won. Even though he was not alive to see that, there was an element of pride in extending the legacy he began. Chuba used to speak a lot about the legacy of principled leadership, and I continue to extend that legacy for the benefit of the Nigerian people.
So what’s the future looking like? Do you ever plan to take up an elected role again?
It is good to think about the future, but it is even better to cherish the now. am indeed a very grateful and content person. My biggest concern is what do today the service of humanity. What I do with the positions find myself in today is always important. For now, have the mandate to serve within a corporate organisation that sustains the Nigerian economy, and my focus is to maintain a principled leadership progressively. I believe the future is brighter for everyone, including myself, if succeed with my team today.
What’s a day in the life of Margery Chuba-Okadigbo like?
So would you say you are creating a voice for other women in the male-dominated oil sector?
would say my position has been symbolic for many women to aspire for more. constantly get invited to speak on gender diversity by stakeholders in the industry, especially women’s advocacy networks and groups who are doing such great jobs. will continue mentoring and sponsoring other women, promoting diversity and inclusivity, building networks, advocating for change, and serving as a role model as best as possible. implore other great women within the industry to continue to do the same
What strategies or policies do you believe are necessary to address the underrepresentation of women in leadership positions in the oil and gas industry, both in Nigeria and globally, and how do you plan to advocate for these changes?
Undoubtedly, the number of women in leadership positions in the industry could be
No one day is the same in my life, especially since my role as Chairman of the Board of NNPC Limited. However, try to make time for everything important in my life, including my family, children and grandchildren. I still have to take care of my law firm and businesses. Keeping that work-life balance is essential.
Where do you see the NNPC Limited at the end of your tenure, and what would you want to be remembered for?
The global shift towards renewable energy sources and the push to reduce greenhouse gas emissions have decreased the demand for fossil fuels. NNPC Limited’s success will depend on its ability to adapt to this changing landscape by investing in renewable energy, diversifying its portfolio, and implementing more sustainable practices. Factors such as Governance and transparency, Infrastructure and security, the global oil market, exploration and production are also key determinants of our success. I am proud to say that some expected milestones have been met, and the roadmap to achieve more is clear but not without its challenges. That said, I see NNPC growing in leaps and bounds beyond being top in Africa. Subsequently, would like to be remembered as a Chairman the promoted good governance, efficiency, transparency and inclusion that made a difference in our nation’s economy.

The restaurant’s interior is a work of art, with a mix of contemporary and traditional elements that create a warm and inviting ambience. Tracy has merged her love for design and food to create an experience that is both visually stunning and delicious. In this interview, she talks us through her foray into the restaurant business and how she created the unique dining experience that is Slice.
Congratulations again on opening your restaurant Slice Lagos. What inspired you to venture into the restaurant industry?
Thank you so much. It’s been a whirlwind of emotions since Slice opened, but we are all grateful. A bit of a funny story here. Slice was supposed to be my interior design showroom but with a dainty cafe in it.
After Covid I literally decided one day that it would be best to convert the idea into a fullblown restaurant, and that was it.
As an interior designer, you have a keen eye for aesthetics. How have you incorporated your expertise in interior design into the design and ambience of your restaurant?
Haha! Thank you very much. The ambience at Slice is very peculiar but in a good way. I wanted a double-volume space with an industrial ceiling and cemented walls, and I brought much of the outside into the space. All in all, I would say that Tulum, Mexico, heavily influenced the design direction of Slice.
“Slice Lagos is fast gaining a reputation for being a unique dining experience. What services or features do you offer that make your restaurant stand out from others in the industry?
I’m quite pleased with the results so far, I must say. When we opened Slice, we wanted to offer something different that we had never seen done in Lagos. Our live station show cocktails were all the rave when we opened, and it helped us gain momentum. The excitement on guests’ faces when they watched their cocktails being made right in-front of them, on their tables, just took the dining experience to a whole new level. We
introduced a 3-course lunch menu for guests who want to have business meetings or lunch dates, and the best part about it is the price. You get a quality 3-course meal (including dessert) for only 20k.
Our brunch and main menus are also handcrafted and curated by my wonderful Italiantrained Chef, who has a passion for the culinary arts, and myself.
Interior design and food are both highly visual and sensory experiences. How did you ensure that the interior design of Slice Lagos complements the dining experience and vice versa?
For me, a well-designed space must appeal to all your senses. I was very intentional with the look and feel of Slice. There is nothing like walking into a space that smells good and looks good. You taste the food and drinks, and your soul aligns. I wanted to take guests on a culinary journey, but what makes the journey worthwhile is the ambience. I think we have successfully done that because our “slice of life” wall has everyone in a chokehold. Haha! The amalgamation of design aesthetics and good food was simply a recipe for a memorable dining experience.
What strategies or approaches do you use in the highly competitive restaurant industry to stay ahead of the game and attract customers?
Honestly, I really don’t compete when it comes to business. I just focus on my brand and constantly challenge myself to do better. I never want my guests to get bored. I can tell you that where Slice was a year and four months ago when we opened is not where we are now. There
is extreme growth because we are constantly innovating, trying new things, and switching things up. I’m very intentional about using Social media to create awareness for the brand, and it has worked well. wwWord of mouth has really done us good too, and we are very grateful for all the guests who have patronized us and told someone about us.
Many people find it challenging to balance multiple businesses. How do you manage being both a restaurateur and an interior decorator?
Plan plan plan. If you follow me on social media, constantly post about digital planning. Every move I make starts out in my planner, and then see that execute 70pct. I can’t explain how much it has helped me balance my life. To have a productive day, you must start your day early. That’s what works for me, especially because I work out 5-6 times a wk.
When we opened Slice, my two businesses didn’t receive the same attention because Slice was a baby and needed me 100pct. Now that we have gone past the teething phase and everything is on autopilot, I can equally joggle all my businesses.
Finally, what advice do you have for aspiring entrepreneurs interested in pursuing their passions in multiple fields, just like you have with “Slice” and Interior Culture by Obiageli. ?
Dig Deep, find your passion and go for it like your life depends on it.
When we opened Slice, we wanted to offer something different that we had never seen done in Lagos.

DINNER PARTY, ANYONE?
It’s easy to understand why trading the club scene for intimate dinner parties is bliss. It is a refreshing change from shouting over loud music and inhaling second-hand smoke you don’t consent to while hanging out with friends. Apart from creating good content and Instagrammable pictures for your social feeds, diner parties are fun and create a bond between friends. So, if you are still trying to figure out how to spend this coming weekend, return to the basics, enjoy good food and drinks over sound conversations with family and friends; consider having a dinner party. As you plan fewer nights out and more nights in, here are a few tips to ensure you host the best one that is enjoyable to all who attend.

CHOOSE A THEME
Is this necessary? No! But it’s fun. Choose a theme for your dinner, but remember nothing too complicated so people are not rushing to the shop to look for something appropriate to wear. Remember, this is supposed to be fun, but make sure it pushes you and your guests out of your comfort zone. This adds to the fun of not only eating, drinking, and conversing; it also introduces the idea of rewarding whoever made the best effort.
CURATE A PLAYLIST
If you have picked a theme, it only adds more pzazz if you curate a playlist to match. Now, this doesn’t mean you make it a drab playlist. Because you are trying to stick to the theme, introduce some danceable tunes so people can intermittently dance between good food and drinks. This all goes hand in hand; make sure the music isn’t too loud so people can hear themselves talk to one another.
SET AND DECORATE A TABLE OR PICNIC IT OUT
A good dinner party must have a well-set and decorated table that is big enough to seat all the guests. If your table isn’t big enough, make an indoor picnic space and decorate the makeshift dining space like any table. Start with the basics: tablecloths, silverware, water glasses, stemware, and the usual. Then move on to flower arrangements, Centrepieces, candles, and anything else you have to make the table layout fancy and nice.
LIGHTING
Optimal lighting is arguably the most important aspect of a dinner party besides good food and drinks. No one looks good under blinding LED lights. Plus, isn’t the atmosphere supposed to be relaxed? Do yourself and everyone else a favour by dimming the lights. Candles are your best bet; use them as your primary lighting source.
ENTERTAINMENT
Group games are ideal for dinner parties. Make them as simple or elaborate as you like; the choice is yours. From charades to two truths and one lie to truth or dare, there are endless games to choose from, but if games are not your thing, prepare some fun conversation topics to reference throughout the night to keep everyone well entertained.

By Bukola Amoboye
If you are in Nigeria right now, one thing is undeniable; the weather has been extremely HOT this month!
From as early as 6 am, the sun is up and blazing like its noon. Let’s blame climate change for this one because typically, we ought to have been in the rainy season by now; fingers crossed until June, as weather forecasters have promised.

For now, we all have to deal with the heat that messes with our sleeping pattern, dressing, mood and skin. The body has to do so much to regulate its temperature; therefore, you’re sweating much more than you used to, clothes are sticky, and skin is extra sensitive and itchy; it really is the worst. While we, unfortunately, can’t do anything about mother-nature, we can definitely help our skin cope better and here’s how:
