Someone called me a feminist the other day saying l mostly showcase women. I chuckled because there’s no denying that l am a strong advocate for women empowerment which reflects in our magazine. No apologies. That being said though, it does not take away the shine from the male gender in any way. It’s just that most times, women have to work twice as hard to get their deserving accolades. As we all also know, women are the more attractive gender because of their silhouettes. It doesn’t take much for a woman to look good when dolled up because they can adorn anything be it flamboyant, sultry, playful or sexy. Designers have a much wider foray to play with. Skirts, dresses that vary in length and texture, jackets, blouses, shoes, high or low, etc, the list is endless. Women also have a wide array of wigs they can wear to suit any of these looks. Men, on the other hand, do not have as much versatility. Theirs is pretty much basic regardless of fabric - shirt, shorts, pants, jackets and flat shoes. This week, we decided to draw attention to some men who are interesting to watch when all decked up. Whatever they adorn always sits well on them and looks so effortlessly dapper! With this in mind, when you see a well groomed man that still manages to push the envelope with one or two quirky twists, you know it’s a man that knows his onions. What makes it even more appealing is when they embrace their feminine side with a dash of colour that their more conservative peers might shy away from. There’s nothing more appealing than seeing a bright red pair of socks, or a colourful tie/pocket handkerchief peeking through a sleek well fitted suit. There are other accessories men adorn as well that hold the same appeal. My favourite is the beaded bracelets they wear on their wrists. No matter how many or how few they have on, it has a strong attraction of masculinity. These little personal touches added to their ensemble goes a long way in placing these men featured this week, firmly on the style radar.

STYLE & DESIGN TRIANGLE KNOTLESS BRAIDS Give your knotless box braids a fresh look with triangle sections instead of the classic square. The angled appearance immediately draws attention to your hair, so triangle box braids are a great choice if you love to be the center of attention. To make your hairstyle even more eye-catching, have your stylist plait a ribbon or yarn element through a section to create a ‘statement braid.’ Triangle knotless braids work best with medium to large braids, and they can also be combined with a classic box pattern for a unique look.

SHORT RED BOX BRAIDS Speaking of braids in different colours, this hair is so bold and vibrant in a bright burgundy colour, accessorized with gold cord. It is a stunning look that is perfect for those who like to make a statement.

CLASSY BOB BOX BRAIDS This is a simple, chic and classic braided bob. It is very cute and easy to wear. You can recreate this or try a longer braid length. Hair like this will look stunning on anyone and will never go out of style. BOB WITH ACCESSORIES Try incorporating yarn, threads, or even earthy accessories like cowrie shells into your look to make a statement, such as rings and beads. Position them to flatter your face shape and bring more attention to your best features, such as your lips and eyes. The style is simple and beautiful while the gold accessories really jazz it up. Recreate this or try a different coloured cord for a more unique look.

JUMBO KNOTLESS BRAIDS While the classic knotless braid look involves fine, thin braids, you can also get the jumbo braid look with this technique. Bonus – jumbo braids take less time to finish than smaller braids as there are fewer sections required. As a result, they are a fantastic option if you don’t want to spend hours in the stylist’s chair. Plus, jumbo braids don’t need extra styling or accessories to make a statement. Jumbo braids have a casual and playful vibe that is an excellent choice for freespirited women.

BOHEMIAN KNOTLESS BRAIDS Keep it breezy and beautiful with bohemian knotless braids. There are no rules when it comes to this hairstyle, it’s all about being unique and unstructured. The simplest way to give your knotless braids a bohemian feel is to leave the ends loose. And rather than aiming for a uniform look, make each braid different.

8

CHUNKY AND BLUNT BOB This bob braid with blunt ends speaks elegance. The blunt cut braids look gorgeous and the gold adds luxury and glamour. Hair like this will make you feel like a Queen every day. Try something similar or you can go for a shorter bob length.

CHIC SHORT BOB For this look, the hair is braided into a short bob that just goes below the chin. The actual braided style is elegant and classic while the twist is warm and stylish. This is just a gorgeous hair idea that will suit everyone of all ages.

y x o B tless o n K

Knotless box braids are everything you want in a hairstyle. Not only do they look effortlessly cool, they are also versatile, flattering, and protective, doing less damage to your hair than traditional box braids. A type of feed-in braid, knotless box braids don’t put tension on your scalp with an ‘anchor knot.’ Instead, your stylist gradually weaves the braiding hair with your natural strands to create a seamless finish that won’t cause breakage or ruin your edges. Natural, beautiful, and feminine, knotless box braids are the perfect way to show off your free spirit and creativity. Jump on the trendy styles. BY ISIOMA USIADE

THISDAY Style Vol. 22, No. 9481 Sunday, April 25, 2021

STYLE & DESIGN At what age did you realise you had a creative side, and how did you develop it? I do not remember how old I was exactly, but I vividly remember drawing and colouring characters from my Bible storybook as a toddler. My Mother began to store my drawings in a little folder when I was five years old. I was always excited to add new drawings to the folder. So, why ballpoint painting? I love the ballpoint pen, especially the black ballpoint pen, because it’s easy to create layers upon layers with crisp, clear strokes and also because it gives me a precise level of contrast when I’m shading. it.

Can you remember your very first drawing? Tell me about

I don’t recall the exact drawing, but I always drew the characters in my toddler Bible stories. Looking at your work, one can easily see hours of painstaking commitment. Can you share the process that goes into your Art? Body Language and Identity inspire me, so the first stage for me is Observation. Observing a person or a reference photograph that speaks to the subliminal emotional responses I want to portray or convey in the story. When I am satisfied, I draw the reference on paper and start to shade. I employ a shading method that I call layering; this is basically the layering of strokes and bases upon each other until there is a distinct contrast of light and shade on the figure. If it’s a body of work consisting of ten to twelve works, I would usually just draw all of them. After the drawings are completed, I generate many background sketches and colour schemes before painting or collaging the drawings. This process usually takes a few months. Studying Art was an expected choice, but did you get any resistance from family regarding considering otherwise traditional options such as law or medicine? When I was growing up, it was not common to find people outside traditional professional courses who were financially comfortable. Naturally, my parents, especially my Mother, were concerned about me studying a course with unpredictable financial rewards. However, with the passing of time and influence from my Father’s friends who were also artists, Late Mr George “Uncle Geelee” Aken’Ova and Prof. Jerry Buhari, things got easier. Your Art seems to be inspired by human interaction and experiences. Why do you choose to explore these areas? I am deeply fascinated by human communication. I like to study how it is influenced by identity and body language. Believe me; it’s interesting what a person’s body language reveals about them when you choose to look behind the smiles or the charade. I constantly resist the natural inclination to “judge a book by its cover” because that’s what appearances are “a cover”. One has to patiently observe and listen to communication (a lot of which is non-verbal) to begin to unravel the onion that is the human mind. What are your thoughts on the Nigerian Art scene and how well it’s done in the past decade? The Nigerian Art scene has experienced phenomenal growth in the last ten years and is still expanding daily. Thanks to events like the Art Auctions by Arthouse - West Africa’s most prominent Art fair - Arts and the many other contemporary art Spaces and galleries springing up in different parts of the country. Modern African Art is now

incomplete without Nigerian Art, and the world is watching closely.

JACQUELINE @ WORK

Do you have a favourite photograph or painting, which inspires you? No, I do not have a favourite piece of art per se. However, I am inspired by many things; Music, real-life experiences, body language, poetry etc. I always read between the lines when I listen to a song, read a piece of poetry or encounter a physically interesting person, so there’s an abundance of material at every point in time.

What do you love about being an artist? The ability to see and experience life differently and also bring a thought to life through lines and colour. What is your daily routine when working? I get into the studio between 9.30, and 10am, usually after my morning exercises and breakfast. By this time, my assistant has set up my workstation with the necessary materials for the piece I’m working on. Music is playing in the background; my mood determines the genre, but it’s most likely an Alte playlist or soft rock and Hip hop from the early 2000s. I stare at the piece I’m working on for a while, soliloquising about whether certain adjustments need to be made or left alone. When I’m done with this process, I proceed to begin working. I typically would close work between 5.30 and 6 pm except on days when I’m on a tight schedule. On such days, I work till midnight.

Many people associate the ballpoint pen with writing, but not Jacqueline Suowari, a Nigerian born artist whose foray into the art world started at the tender age of five. For her, it is a magic wand that helps bring her fascination with human interaction to life. One which ensures she keeps ardent collectors and art lovers alike totally enthralled with the stunning and magnetic pieces she produces through it. In this interview with KONYE CHELSEA NWABOGOR, she lets us in on the process behind her art, the advantages of social media and her impression of the Nigerian Art industry.

What advice would you give to a young artist following in your steps? Trust the pace at which you journey forward. Develop yourself, your skills and your mind. Always document your work. This should naturally involve taking professional high-resolution photographs of your work and of events where your work is exhibited, detailed documentation of processes, progress and titles. Lastly, backup these materials in as many places as possible.

PORTRAIT OF A LADY IN SLINGBACKS

So are you having any challenges regarding breaking in and making your work more visible? Not at the moment. There was a time when visual artists or creatives had to solely rely on only physical exhibitions and the activities that followed to get exposure and visibility for their work. But, thanks to the availability and accessibility of social media, we can now harness all the tools at our disposal to promote our work. In the eleven years of my professional practice, there has never been a better time to be a Visual Artist; Platforms like Instagram and Twitter have the capability of finding and reaching a wider audience. Personally, Instagram has been very helpful for visibility and communication with a vast number of collectors and art lovers both locally and internationally. In these times, it’s not enough to stay in the studio and work for long hours. The Artist also has a responsibility to put work out there for the world to see.

What piece of your artwork would you like to be remembered for? I would love to be remembered for my larger than life drawings and my attention to detail. But more than that, I’ll like to be remembered for the message of my work. With every body of work I begin, I am addressing issues that affect our everyday living and hopefully proffering solutions that make life easier.

EBUKA UCHENDU BURNA BOY

When you’re as good-looking as Ebuka, you can afford to take risks with your style. What we especially like about the way he dresses is that it all comes together looking effortless. Almost like fashion is second nature to him. And yes, maybe it is. From classics to stand out native attires, there’s never been a look that didn’t love him.

Grammy award-winning Burna Boy’s eclectic sound doesn’t just end with his music. It also reflects his style. He brings the same energy of his music into his attires. Raw. Sexy. Savvy. Strong.

DAVIDO

EFE TOMMY ADABAMU

Dressing casual isn’t as easy as it looks. Some might think it’s a lazy way out of dressing up but that’s isn’t always the case. Music crooner Davido somehow always manages to pull off his casual looks with style and ease and most times these pieces come with expensive price tags and it shows!

Efe’s on our fashion radar and he has been steadily on the rise for some years now, but this year it reached its peak. Not surprising, because his ability to pull off coloured tailoring is second to none. When he’s not suited and booted, you’ll often find him going big on texture with a series of killer jackets worn over T-shirts and dark denim.

GABRIEL AKINOSHO

DJ SPINALL

Gabriel knows how to wear a suit. He makes tailoring fun, and does so through wearing audacious silk jacquard dinner jackets, bold coloured suits favouring unusual cuts. He’s also adept at dressing down when he does slim dark denim, loafers and some form of lightweight jacket on top. He’s never over-styled and always looks enviably comfortable in what he’s wearing, which is something we can all aspire to.

Oluseye Sodamola referred to, as Djspinall, is one disk jockey that holds his own in the fashion department. His sense of style is very casual yet unique in its kind of way. Every time he is spotted out and about or behind his DJ wheels, he is hard not to notice especially with his signature traditional cap that always matches his outfit. We are sure he has over a million of them caps!

DENOLA GREY As one of the most successful male fashion influencers in Nigeria, it’s no surprise that Denola’s wardrobe defies neat categorization, reason or logic. On paper, his sometimes quirky style and penchant for going shirtless under tailoring sound like things that would render him ineligible for a best-dressed man list. But those are the exact same reasons that keep us enthralled and wanting to see more of what comes out of his wardrobe.

16

EYIMOFE ATAKE The list isn’t complete without Eyimofe, one of Lagos fashion trendsetters. Like it or hate it, this is a man that loves his colours and wears them with confidence. Yellow, Pink, Orange, Green - pants, shirts, he has them. His clothes mold into his lithe frame and his perky glasses give him an added edge. A Lawyer with a flamboyant sense of style cannot go unnoticed. Though an odd mix, it remains eclectic.

KORODE ROBERTS IGEE OKAFOR

He is the CEO of Fusion Clothing. His style has become synonymous with creativity and the freedom of movement. Known for his edgy sophistication, he is the muse of his brand and his versatility gives a little insight on how to get that dandy appearance that is, if you are bold enough to.

Okafor’s eternally preppy style hasn’t changed much since we got to know him, and that’s no bad thing. Done well, preppy style is hard to beat. From collegiate-inspired outerwear to sharply tailored suits, he never puts a wrong foot wrong.

JOHN BOYEGA

LANRE OGUNLESI

British Nigerian actor John Boyega can switch up his style ante whenever the mood takes him. He rocks an agbada just as well he does a suit. It does help that he has the swagger to carry off almost anything that graces his body.

There is definitely something to admire about Lanre’s sense of style anytime. Though sometimes understated and subtle, a trained eye knows a good cut when you see one. This translates in anything he wears, whether formal or casual, traditional or English. Lanre always raises the ante and is a delight to watch.

JOHN OBAYUWANA

MAI ATAFO

Now, this is one man that certainly pushes the envelope and is not afraid to stray where most men would not dare. Whenever this undisputed king of luxury steps out, his presence and attire never fails to remind us that this is a man who knows his onions when it comes to standing out with his strong sense of style. Despite his age, John still oozes a certain amount of swagger which obviously stems from inner confidence about his appearance. Real good.

Suave, timeless and just the right amount of dapper - that’s how you’d describe fashion designer extraordinaire Mai Atafo. Atafo is a true representation of his eponymous fashion brand, which most fashion conscious men and women adorn. Even when he isn’t wearing one of his dapper creations, Mai stands out with his sharp sense of fashion.

KOJO WILLIAMS Williams is a sportsman who emits supreme confidence in taste with what he wears. He is able to blur the boundaries between formal and casual wear which is a celebration of the new approach to style, relaxed yet elegant.

LOLU AKORADE If the mark of a truly well-dressed man lies in the ability to look great in formal, traditional and casual outfits, Lolu nails it every time. Everything about his looks screams expensive and well put together. Cut also plays a key part too. He might not be a Hollywood star, but he definitely dresses like one.

TAYO AYENI

NIMI BRIGGS

The Skymit Motor’s boss, Tayo is one of the men that has embraced his inner playful side with the colours displayed on his shirts. His new weight loss has pushed him towards formfitting suits and even waistcoats. Tayo is taking no prisoners with his vast array of eclectic shirts.

Briggs is arguably the most individual dresser on this list. But not in a blatant, over the top way. He knows what he likes, and doesn’t pander to brands or trends. His numerous forays into tailoring reminds us of how the suit can be worn in numerous interesting ways.

NOGIE MEGGISON With an intimidating height and legs that go on forever, Nogie certainly is an eye-candy especially when he wears pants with an eclectic touch. It could be a zipper somewhere or an interesting pocket - something always stands out. As for his form fitting traditional attire, it comes as no surprise when you hear how hard he works to maintain his lithe body. A designer’s delight!

RICHARD MOFE DAMIJO Like wine, Richard gets even better with age. A rare gift. The AMVCA 2016 red carpet was the moment RMD cemented his status as one of the most well-dressed men in Nigeria. Aside from his charm, RMD’s dress sense shows an impressive reverence for the importance of ensuring everything fits impeccably.

TEMISAN EMMANUEL You can’t go anywhere at the moment without hearing his name echoing off the wall. Not surprising really, seeing as he is one of the favourite influencers of the moment. From his Instagram feed, we are constantly reminded that aside from comedy, he also has his sense of style on lockdown.

TIMINI EGBOSAN Timini has that quirky but cool energy about him, which seems to resonate with his style. We can’t pinpoint his particular sense of style but whatever his choice outfit is, he always seems to pull it off effortlessly.

TONY RAPU Rapu’s strength is not only at the pulpit but also in his sense of style. From his well tailored suits, to his well cut shirts, not to mention the odd foray into traditional attires, his keen eye for effortless style always reflects. Anytime he steps out, you cannot but notice something that stands out in the most subtle way.

PAUL ADEFARASIN Call him flamboyant, Paul is not one to enter a place without getting second glances. His suits sit so well on his tall lithe frame and his native attire with the short sleeves is a delight to watch because of the way the sleeve hug his biceps. Now and again, he wears a thick gold chain across his chest which, on some men, would look odd but Adefarasin carries it so well one wonders why men have not taken a cue and followed suit

8 WAYS TO

Oily Skin

We know by now that oily skin isn’t necessarily the enemy, although sometimes, it can sure feel like it. A perfectly matte complexion might not be something to aspire to, but there is satisfaction to be found in balance: after all, your skin needs oil, but an excess of the greasy stuff is less than appealing. The thing to remember though, is that you can’t ‘get rid’ of oily skin and nor should you feel compelled to: after all, the days of drying our faces into oblivion are over, and glow is firmly back on the agenda. Understanding your oily skin is the key to managing (not eliminating) it, and once harmony is restored, you’ll have a happy, healthy complexion that glows and never greasy. Here is some sage advice on keeping oily skin as its healthiest, best treatments to try now. BY USIADE ISIOMA

Master Your Daily Cleansing Routine

When you have oily skin, the urge to wash your face at every available opportunity can be strong. But frequent face-washing habit may actually be making things worse. It seems logical that removing the skin’s oil would be the best way to clear oily skin, but over-cleansing actually activates further oil production. When you cleanse so much you remove the skin’s natural and necessary sebum reserves and it’s going to rectify things by producing more. Use a cream or milky cleanser, as these will dissolve dirt and debris without disturbing the barrier function and natural moisture levels of the skin. You can also go for a cleanser with BHAs in it to really assist in dissolving excess oil.

Be Wary of Products Formulated for Oily Skin

Believe it or not, products specially formulated for minimising oiliness often exacerbate the situation, as so many contain harsh ingredients that sweep away every last drop of sebum from the skin. The main culprits are products containing alcohols, astringents and sulphates, so check the back of your bottle before making a purchase. Whilst they’ll have a satisfying short-term effect of removing the excess oil on the surface of the skin, over time, the lack of oil in your skin will trigger excess oil production to try and make up for the lack of oil as these harsh products can interfere with your acid mantle: the skin’s protective barrier which can lead to sensitivity, breakouts, inflammation and dehydration. So, if any products in your routine are making your skin feel dry and tight, give them the boot.

Don’t Ditch the Moisturiser

A common misconception is that skin can either be oily or dehydrated but in fact, it can be both. This means there’s little sense in ditching the hydrating products which are, in fact, essential in every skin routine no matter your skin type. Hydrating products are necessary to maintain moisture levels, if your skin is lacking in hydration, oil production can go into overdrive to compensate. But before you reach for the first face cream within your grasp, consider that your choice of product is an important one. If you’re worried about blackheads and blemishes as well as that dreaded shine, it’s best to avoid those that are super-creamy, heavy and occlusive. Your skin probably won’t appreciate thick heavy moisturisers, so avoid any creams with rich plant butters as these are likely to be too rich and lead to congestion.

Get to Grips with Salicylic

Acids are an important step in any regime, but leave-on BHAs like salicylic acid play an especially important role in controlling over-zealous oil production, which in turn minimises the development of blackheads and blemishes. Salicylic acid is a beta-hydroxy acid which is lipophilic, meaning it is attracted to and helps to break down excess oil, it’s anti-inflammatory and can penetrate pores to scoop out any debris, making it a great ingredient for targeting the congestion that often comes hand in hand with oiliness. The best way to incorporate salicylic acid into your routine is with a twice-daily exfoliant, swiped over skin after cleansing. Just don’t make the mistake of rinsing it off: it’ll be nowhere near as effective at sweeping away any greasiness. If you’re using a salicylic acid cleanser instead, leave it on for two minutes before washing, a great opportunity for a little facial massage.

Address Your Diet

The root of your oily skin issues could actually lie in your gut. If you suffer from oily skin, avoid sugar and dairy, as they feed and increase oil production, a diet deficient in zinc, magnesium, vitamin B and omega 3 may contribute to oil production. Zinc helps to regulate the oil-producing glands,
